Is the expresso ui 2.2 on the myotuch 4g reall that bad? ive read that alot of people are bashing it saying its the worst. i myean if people hate it, why buy the phone? my question is if expresso (performance wise, not how it looks) really a issue with such a great phone?
I doubt there's any problem with it performance-wise. Watching all the video reviews so far and none of them mentioned anything about the phone being slow.
It's all personal preference. I actually don't mind it.

If you really hate it you have the option of adding a launcher from the market. ADW or Launcher Pro, should run very smoothly on this phone, as it seems to have speed to spare. I can't imagine a launcher app, causing much lag on this phone.

It's pretty dang good, and includes a variety of diverse themes to customize the look quite a bit. I generally preferred vanilla Froyo over that of HTC Sense, but I think I prefer mySense over everything else.
I won't lie to you this sense version is kinda cool. I'm not a sense fan but this is not intrusive at all. I might still put launcher pro on it since I paid for it. But stock it is nice.

I purchased the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G, (black version) today. There was a line waiting for the store to open. As far as T-Mobile's version of HTC Sense, i like it too... but i hope at some point though to be able to install a version of the OS that has the new version of HTC Sense, without the T-Mobile branding, and limitations...

People around here have a false belief that "stock android" is "awesome" when in reality it's one of the more bland boring and barebones oses on any phone out there.
The only people who persue "stock" are masochists who feel the need to spend hours upon hours introducing all the features that carriers and mfgs add anyway.
When they see a "skin" they think bloat like you would on a dell.
of course im gonna get launcher pro or something. customization is the main reason im getting my first android. i just dont want to get some ui thatll give me problems or never get gingerbread (im ok with it takong awhile to get it). i loved the stock on the g2 but that keyboard issue is somethingi hate and i might not use

Why not just give it to hero and leave it at that? Now verizon got there gruubby little hands on sense but why have two androids released at the same time.Sprint has the hero but the the distinctive looking version the chinless one.The tmo Us got 3 android phones but they arent as good as the competition though. Now the hero is no longer uniquie since all these look alike are getting the touch up.
You do know that there are over 20 android phones slated to come out in the next 6-8 months, right? The hero isnt unique anyway. We've had hero roms running on the G1 since before the hero even had a US release.
yep its now just part of a series of clones..
Yeah I'm not really a fan of Sense UI, it has a couple of cool widgets but it's such a resource hog. Even if I had a Hero with the extra RAM I'd still use the regular launcher, but that's just me.

well sense ui is very visually appealing and adds function compared to phones running regular android. why keep sense ui only on hero...its htcs own custom ui so they should be able to do what they want.
plus the hero will just end up being a dud...a prototype for sense ui and see where they can improve upon..just like the g1...and the extra ram really does help with speed and multitasking.
and besides companies custom UIs is only included on phone without the 'with google" branding..(sprint hero is an exception)
Lol, that reminds me of this:

OMG, why did HTC port sense to other Phones!, YOU WILL PAY HTC, whaaa, whaaa, I wanted exclusive!!!!
Dude, seriously...
Why do you care ?
Frankly I want to see Android do well. Why do I care if other Android phones get anothers UI ? All I care about is handset makers putting top grade hardware for these things.
In a forum much dedicated to importing UIs and Apps from other phones pretty damn ignorant to get upset about this.

they arent clones...tattoo has 1.6
even so, they arent clones..thats like saying two different dell laptops are clones because they both run windows 7
Sense is pretty much HTC's version or "Branch" of android much like Ubuntu is to
Debian (although not as different).
All HTC Phones with sense offer something different.
The Hero is an "All Rounder" (At the moment)
The Tattoo is a low cost budget phone with customisation aimed at the "less geeky" market.
The next "Major Release" they release with Sense UI will probably have the next version of Sense running on a 2.0 backbone and with a larger screen similar to the HD2.
did you guys forget, the UI is freaking great! Why wouldn't they put it on every phone if so many G1 owners are struggling for a decent version. I want that cliq tho...

Eh, I'm not really a fan. I found that I was just using the widgets for the hell of it. Don't need mail or SMS, music widget always lags, twitter one would never refresh ect. The only widgets I really like are global search, power control, music and flip clock. All of which you can get on 1.6+. I also love Advanced Launcher, which has faunctionality that TouchFlo doesn't. Not to mention it's a friggin' resource hog. So yeah, I'd rather have more RAM available to keep my phone running faster, even if it did have he extra RAM the Hero and 32 A Magic have.

I totally agree, I honestly don't know why people want sense so much, its just not very good in my opinion. You get very few usable upgrades in a trade off with it being much slower, I really don't see the point?
I'm due an upgrade soon and think I might get a hero, but if I do i'll probably root it and put a 2.0 stock based rom on it rather than sense!

To be honest, I only wanted sense for the widgets and the music app. That was about it, other than that, I could care less about the UI. At the growth rate of android I'm sure custom UIs will be a thing of the past sooner or later.
Cmon lets us accept the fact that KiNgxKxKlair has most ROMs on xda. I have tried few of them only to wipe again within minutes!
Reason:
-Slow
-Late indication of incoming call
-Problem in signing to Google universe
-Too many similar sounding ROMs
May be am sounding like a noob but these are the problems that I always face with KiNgxKxKlair ROMs. Of course they look good and comes with all the goodies such as AOSP, grat splash screens, Sense etc. But it fails miserably once you try using them for what phones a really meant for-making calls!
This is not really a rant; I appreciate the work and his time! Just my two cen ts.
I was in the same boat. Couldn't deal with how slow the roms were.
I'm thinking it's because 20 out of 21 of them are Sense roms.
DroidEris2G1 is awesome...
Yea, they've always been slow for me, too. :/ He does good work and is dedicated to it, but in the end I just like my plain ol donuts.
check the "How to get Hero to run Fast" thread. Sense isnt nearly as slow as alot of people are complaining about. The more people ***** about the slowness of the ROMS, just proves that they dont know what there doing.
I avg. 2.2 on a linpack with sense(not the greatest, but its sense) and I've never came close to missing a phone call.
And all this coming from a Noob
i just flashed king's sense **** for my girl's phone. at my first look i'm not so sure about it. it's laggy, unresponsive, and basically a failed attempt in my opinion.

Sense roms are as slow as people complain about, I would know. I stuck with them for over 6 months before I flashed any other type of rom. I now know that Sense is an ugly piece of bloatware that has features that can easily be emulated most other places in a manner that exceeds expectations. The ONLY thing sense has going for it anymore is the widgets, and I feel sorry for HTC the day that widgets like that become commonplace for Android.
That being said, at least it's not Motoblur or Touchwiz.
ok so right now I have an HD2 running a Froyo Sense ROM, OC to 1.113ghz with usually 250MB free benching better than a nexus one stock on 2.2.
I am loving this phone, it's basically an Evo on Tmobile, with updates coming out daily.
The thing is that someone is willing to trade me a Vibrant for it. Now market value alone says I should do the trade, but the thing is I don't see many custom ROMs here ( I know it's new but still) and I am all about Froyo + OC + lag fix + other cool stuff, and I just wanted some feedback on how people like their Vibrant?
I love the Super AMOLED and hummingbird, I think I'll do the trade based on those 2 factors alone, but how's the general fluidity, the UI, battery life? Just trying to get a good concept here.
Do you guys see much development coming soon? Sense ROMs, Froyo ROMs, etc...?
Do it!
......
Let's be honest that hd 2 with android sucks for every day use. I say do it!

The UI is user preference, like sense the widgets are nice. I just can't stand the look of Sense. That being said everything pretty much depends on what you like and how you use it.
I love my vibrant. The only problems I've had is with GPS in some situations but other than that there is no significant issue with the phone for me. Reception is better than other phones I've used on TMO.

Hey guys.
As you already know, official Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM released.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009177
That means we've got a "Gingerbread ROM with Touchwiz UI" !
So let's encourage developers to port it to Nexus S
That would be soooo awesome, but at this point the MT3G has more development than the Nexus...they even have honeycomb.
this topic made me smile .. Before the nexus s I owned a galaxy s .. lots and lots of people there want an aosp looking rom and want to get rid of touchwiz asap .. And now I ahve a nexus S with the aosp I have been wanting for so long and see a topic requesting touch wiz

Same here. Go figure...
However, CM7 already has all it takes to make your phone look a lot like TouchWiz. It has the statusbar widgets, and the launcher can be customized to look a great deal like it. Is it the home widgets? Cause I'm sure there must be plenty of alternatives in the Market.
Heck, CM7 + ADW is even far more customizable. I don't see a reason why anyone would need TouchWiz at this point.
the reason people sold their Galaxy S to nexus S is because of the stupid touch wiz. and you want people to bring it ? i hate you from my heart

Pretty sure it was Samsung's incompetence of releasing Android 2.2 in a timely fashion and ROMs basing off Samsung internal leaks with kernels that weren't open-sourced.
I personally don't care if someone ports TouchWiz. If they do, then great. I won't be using it but trying it out to play around with. There's a difference between requesting and something actually being done.
I would definitely like to have the choice of trying out Gingerbread TouchWiz. I've noticed that the Nexus S doesn't really have as much roms as I thought it would have. Maybe its because 2.3 is the latest software and it would defeat the purpose of putting 2.2 sense, 2.2 blur etc or its simply the fact that devs are holding out for dual core and quad core phones.

Most likely because of 2.2 and 2.3. Porting another FrameWork takes a lot of work. It's not that easy to do especially to get it working as a daily driver

Most people are obsessed with speed and latest and greatest, not what offers the most. They say TouchWiz is buggy but so is Gingerbread...obviously I could go on and on.
Why is there so much hostility with reference to Nexus S and development? Why do people consider the Nexus S inferior and not worthy of ROM development? It's a phone, people own it. If all you do is bash the phone and the community, what is your endgame? I say, the more ROMs the better, no matter what they are. And if development dies because of lack of interest, so be it, but let the natural course of the device play out.

That's not the issue anymore will those roms. Not to mention the only leg nexus has up the captivate is nfc and vanilla android. I like the touchwiz icons, maybe it is because i also use an iphone 4, but those stock app icons make me want to scream
And judging from the 2.3.3 has bricked my gps thread, i am getting less and less excited about owning a nexus s once it arrives with 850mhz 3g bands. Looks like samsung still cant get the gps right..now to see if they did something to the gs2.

Try the MIUI rom I think it's the rom that you're looking for.
@allgamer: in cm7 the hardware encoding actually works. 720p I smooth but no audio is being outputted. That's the only thing that needs to be fixed. Regular videos are fine.

The only reason I hated TouchWiz was because of bloatware, and Samsung's closed source issue which hindered development. Other than that, the UI looks great to me. The blue accents are nice and is easier to view than the gloomy green of the NS. Codecs are a major plus. The launcher is acceptable. My reason for moving to the NS is for CM7 as well as Google updates. Therefore, I'm all for porting the Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM.

Well after almost a week with the new Sprint Nexus-S 4G, I plan to return it and get my EVO going again. My EVO was rooted with the best Sense based ROM, "Myn's RS 5" I still think the EVO 4G is one of the better smartphones on the market ( if rooted, and good ROM installed ) even a year after it's release, and the EVO-3D should be even better yet.
I wanted the Nexus for the lightweight form factor, and easy fit in pocket...beautiful screen...and better battery life.
Well a week later I can NOT stand "vanilla" Android, didn't realize how much I took "Sense UI" for granted, basic Android feels so, uh basic, and years outdated. I mean come on the default Voice mail is to call a phone # to access messages, lol that's from the 90's man. The dialer and contacts also seem super basic and like iPhone1 or Android 1.5, and the default e-mail for non gmail is horrible, the standard e-mail widget on the EVO is perfect, and ten million times better.
So many things on "vanilla" Android just seems to be done so poorly and outdated, makes me wonder what people like about ? I know it is meant to be tweaked and played with, and add all your own custom apps and widgets, but that is stupid to me, that is just saying stock Android sucks.
Plus the battery life on my Nexus-S is not stellar like expected, sure it is better than my EVO, but barely, and the screen is actually harder to see outside in the sunlight.
Will go back to my EVO 4G, and upgrade to the EVO-2 ( 3d ), can only imagine a Myn's based ROM on that beast, with Android 2.3...dual cores...1gb memory...4gb storage...higher res screen...
Only thing I don't like on the EVO is it's thick and bulky size, it is borderline just too heavy, and big, not the 4.3" screen, I mean look at the new Galaxy S-2, that is 4.3 but super thin and lightweight, wish HTC could slim it down a bit.
Opinions ?
To each their own, I guess. I haven't tried the Nexus and don't plan to get one. I'm holding out hope we'll get we'll get the Galaxy S 2. I prefer AOSP over Sense. Sense feels gaudy to me and forces an aesthetic I don't care for. I like a lean, minimalistic approach that I can customize and make my own.
Either way. Welcome back.
You know you can put different ROMs on the Nexus S right?
I won't go with the Nexus S because it doesn't have a notification led [RETARDED] and because it's a minor bump from the Evo [not worth the loss of an upgrade] but it seems like most of your issue is the ROM itself.
Unfortunately, I read on the EVO 3D forum that if Myn can't get his hands on an EVO 3D for the upgrade price, he probably won't be devving for it. He technically doesn't qualify for an upgrade yet I believe.
So...hey, donate some money so he can buy one I guess or figure out a way to get him one for the upgrade price.

That's what Myn's ROM "Warmtwopointtwo" is for, it is still "Sense" based, but gets rid of all the crapware and bloatware, and streamlines everything in the background, just keeping the core "Sense" stuff. It is a very clean and stripped down look, and then can still be themed and customized to your hearts content.

hmm...I am surprised on this forum, there isn't a Sprint rep that can cut Myn a deal, get him one for the upgrade price and not pay full retail ? I thought after one year you can upgrade to a new phone by renewing on a new 2yr contract and get the phone for the $199 price ? And usually most people have a $150 gift certificate by staying with Sprint after like 10 months, I know I got one.

So whats the best AOSP ROM ? CM 7 ?
Wish Cyanogen 7 was ready for the Nexus-S 4G, but they say have to wait for CM 7.1 that has official support for 2.3.4 that is on the Sprint Nexus-S.
I also got the nexus s two days ago and to be honest I love it. It a lot slimmer and lighter than the evo and it actually does not feel like its bulky in the pocket. The screen it very nice, but at times it seems a little oversaturated. Even thou it's got a 5mp camera it takes great pics and the video recording it's pretty good as well, granted it's not recording at 720p. Overall I am really enjoying a smaller phone ( didn't realize the evo was so massive compared to other phones) and hope that sprint gets a dual core 4 inch phone. I was saving my upgrade for the evo 3d but after having the nexus s I might just keep this and skip the evo 3d. Hopefully there will be a nexus 3 by the end of the year?? who knows.
in caparison to the evo;
...stock vanilla is just fine for me, straight to the point. Battery has lasting longer than the evo, nexus s does not have notification led but there is an app called "noled" which has been working just fine, love the phone design.
To be honest the evo is capable of doing everything i ever needed from a phone, and so does the nexus s ( but better for gaming) but with new and bigger tech coming out every 6months you always feel like you "need" the latest. So far the thing I'm really enjoying about the nexus is the size, it feels like the perfect size.

CM7 has been unusually shaky, consider their track record. I have hope 7.1 will being more stable than the past releases.

here's wishing there was a 'you must be borderline MR' button...
you do realize you can put almost whatever UI you want on almost any android phone, right?

Try putting a Sense based ROM or UI on my Nexus-S, there is only one that I know of, and it is in beta, with a lot of features still not working. Don't know of any other "Sense UI" for the Nexus-S ?
Nice thing with Sense based phones, is they get the Sense ROM's of course, but also can easily install the AOSP ROM's too.
Watch this good hands on video of the new EVO 3D, mainly showing off Sense 3.0, which I what I wanted to see more of, I could give two ****s about the 3D on the phone. Actually I wish Sprint sold two versions, the "Sensation" non 3D version is slightly thinner, but exact same hardware.
But Sense 3.0 looks very ncie

Lol that video is like us trying to get Virus's rom to work right
Eh, it's only boring if you have no imagination and/or no ability to make things how you want them.
Vanilla android does one thing nicely, that's let you do anything you want. ADW and themes is a great example of that. I'm on AOSP right now and here's my homescreen, you may not like it, but if you don't think you could have made it how you wanted then you just didn't want to try. This is why we like Android over iOS, because we have freedom of expression, not conformity to look like everyone else's.

So when I click your image on my evo is that the difference in screen size to scale? Or has the size of the image been reduced a bit?
