Played with Galaxy S with Froyo and.... - Fascinate General

I just played with a Galaxy with 2.2 Froyo. And I can honestly say I see absolutely no performance upgrade. Yes flash is there and a few added features we all no about in froyo. But nothing noticeable! There was still lag on the lock screen and animations. Market was better, browser seemed the same when I tested speed against my fascinate. Except flash.
Was I getting excited for nothing? Any

froyo update = when major development starts
Sent from my Samsung Fascinate using XDA App

not only is that right about development, but any froyo that you have played with that is out right now isnt final. supposedly samsung pulled it to make major optimizations and put their phones up to par with all the other froyo phones. we will not actually know how it runs on the fascinate to we get a build that is specific to the fascinate. Im still holding out a little hope, however ive never seen any lockscreen lag to begin with so dont know what thats all about.and once i put adw or LP as my launcher i really dont see any lag. it sticks for a second every once in a while but i never see the jitteryness that i had on my droid x, that she now has with froyo that is not one bit faster than my fascinate. i dont know about everyone else but im ready for that nice big LTE LG phone that we all saw on engadget and every other news site. that would be nice

If you don't know what Froyo adds, you don't know what you're playing with.

I know I've heard this stated wrong a couple places. A major release is 1.x to 2.x and a minor release is x.1 to x.2 so the froyo update is a minor release. Most of the features are under the hood improvements. I've seen froyo on the evo and most of my friends didn'tnotice a difference.

Please. If you need to be told about performance to notice it, then its a placebo. Maybe you should re-read. The op never said they didn't know what froyo adds, as you insinuate. They said they didn't see a performance increase. Two very different things. Coming from Froyo on two different phones....a lot of these performance increases are situational, and not translating into overall performance increases.
Plus how can you say the op is wrong about galaxy s froyo if he had tried it and you have not? Samsung has a track record for screwing **** up.

Well, okay. Since you said please. Lol.
There's a notable performance difference is my point. Having played with quite a few 2.1 and 2.2 roms on my Nexus, it is night and day. Heavy apps and games load quicker and run smoother. Hard multitasking doesn't cause any drag. The browser is twice as fast running side by sides.
Ill speak more plainly then, so perhaps you can catch on to my point.
My mother in law plays farmville and checks email. If I upgrade her 1.8 ghz P4 with a gig of ram to a quad core 2.6 ghz and 6gb gaming memory, she really isn't going to see much of a performance difference in farmville and hotmail.
However, when I run photoshop, play with video editing, or crank up Fallout3, it will be very evident.
JIT is not a placebo. Nor is the V8 browser, or the kernel based memory management improvements that 2.2 brings.
So again, if you do not see the performance enhancements, then you do not know what you are looking for.
This is a statement, not an opinion.
As for samsung screwing it up, it is possible, though I won't care a whit as soon as I can get into either a clean AOSP froyo rom, or a CM port.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

I've used a Nexus One before and after Froyo. We use the phone as a "computer" for research purposes. The performance upgrade may not be readily apparent to the average user but JIT really boosts performance for computations. Froyo also adds some API's that developers can use to boost performance.

From what I read the J.I.T COMPILER doesn't do much for the humming bird processor and gpu.....it improves performance much more on SNAPDRAGON Processors.
Even with flash turned off I've seen videos of the iphone loading SOME webpages faster than the nexus one with 2.2.... that irks me cause I hate APPLE

Virgin mobile gets Froyo?!

Well, Virgin Mobile has it now which means sprint will soon. I have a feeling my great grandchildren playing with my phone when im dead and gone will get the update if they're lucky. Anyone suggest a good phone? This phone has got to go...

I personally love this phone, even with 2.1 it still amazes anybody I show it to. Of course I must have been lucky cause I suffer no lag issues or any other issues other users post on here. I score a 930 on quadrant stock and mid 8's in linpack which doesn't prove anything but it is what it is. A friend of mine with the droid x (which I like also) can't believe how much snappier my fascinate is even though he runs 2.2... This phone will be hard to beat for a while IMO of course!
I think a good phone fit you to try is John's phone. You'll never have to worry about updates
This phone is fine without froyo. This thread is pointless. And has nothing to do with the fascinate.

Evo smoothness

What is the biggest reason that the evo isn't "Iphone" smooth? I got to play with a Nexus S at bestbuy a week ago and it really was "Iphone" smooth. Is it fps or something else in the system? Before anyone flames me understand that I love my Evo and would never give it up for the iphone, just a honest and curious question. Thanks in advanced

It's true; well to be 100% accurate, not all of Android is HW accelerated. Some parts are.
On top of that the iPhone 4 has a PowerVR SGX 535 GPU which is twice as fast as the EVO's Adreno 200 GPU. For comparison, the Nexus S has the better PowerVR SGX 540 GPU (twice as fast as the 535 in the iPhone 4) but iOS's hardware acceleration still makes the UI smoother than the Nexus S with 2.3. It's rumored that Honeycomb will bring full HW acceleration and that should bring it to iOS/WP7 level smoothness for the GPUs it will support.

I don't know, could be a number of reasons. Android was first influenced by the blackberry OS and started changing it to be more iOS like once the iPhone was released. Could be that its taken this long to catch up to something which was lower in priority. Maybe it's because there are tons of GPUs on Android phones and its hard to support them all. A lot of the early Android phones were from HTC (which Google used to build the platform - G1, Ion, and only comparably, the N1) and had some pretty crap GPUs, maybe that held it back. Most likely it was a combination of these.

Why We're Getting No Gingerbread For a While..

Ok guys I think I have figured out why the Samsung Vibrant has been getting no support in terms of updates from anyone including samfirmware.com! If you think about it all other Galaxy S phones and the Galaxy S 4G (Or Vibrant 4G) has had lots of leaks and even ETA's for updates except our Vibrant. Why? Simple. T-Mobile is doing what they tried to do for Froyo! There going to bring updates and bugfixes to the Vibrant 4G first alongside the other Galaxy S devices and use it as another justification to purchase that phone, then a couple months later or perhaps not at all the OG Vibrant might get some bug fixes and a Gingerbread update!
Please reply what you guys think on either this post or your theory on why the last leak we got was KB5 back in Feburary.

Unlaggy Atrix?

So I had my hands on an ATT MB860, 4.5.91, Gingerbread Atrix, but returned it due to the immense lag with live wall papers and the incorrectly working speakerphone.
Does an unlaggy (with lwp) Atrix exist? I've seen a couple of demo 2.3.4. Atrix's at my local (United States) ATT stores, and seen that they react the same wya (immense lag, but quick to open web pages and apps). Are laggy Atrix's a result of quality control or the FW? Or does an unlaggy Atrix exist?
I dont experience any lag on my Atrix - I've had it since Feb 21st of this year. Got it on pre-order.

In addition to what you mentioned, speed, memory management (so many launcher redraws and apps closing with only 512 MB of RAM), and screen resolution are what makes the Atrix better for me.
However, the Nexus has a much brighter and more colorful screen, albeit with a lower resolution. Personally, I like the higher res screen on the Atrix.
About the only thing the NS has over the Atrix is the fact that it's supported by Google.

Do quadrant scores really matter?

So I was running Mostly Stock for a long time, and was pretty happy with it...except for the periodic annoying EL3
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Let's try that again So I've been on mostly stock...not overclocked. I was normally getting around 18-1950 quadrant scores... So I updated to Sleeper ROM (el30, odexed)...it seems about the same performance-wise...but I only get ~1300 on quadrant!
I was wondering if that was some effect of the odexed vs deodexed...but I don't see how. I don't see a difference in my daily driving...just thought I would ask what other people feel about such things...
Also, I'm still running ext4... If I can convince myself to go MTD, I would probably try clean GB... But I don't want to go back to rds...

nope its more for fps testing. It has no real world preformance meaning...
No. They can be fooled with scripts. The only thing that should ever matter is how fast a ROM seems to you.

Of course they are !!!!!!
How else would we compare e-peens on here
Trololol. But seriously, mtd performs the best but the quadrants are a little lower than ext4. So basically, it means nothing.
That's why I'm not sure why all the phone review n comparison videos use quadrant to test performance. Then I laugh when it tells them one phone is "faster" than the other but the specs are worse XD.

The scores are a great way to determine what setup works best on each specific phone, but does a poor job of comparing performance between different phones.
As such, if you are looking at the scores in respect to what others got, its not much of a help
But if you are using it for what makes your phone work better, as far as different ROMs, Kernels, and different combos, then it can be very helpful
I feel like Antutu seems to score in an arbitrary way that works. I can't say why but the number match the performance I feel more often than not. Some outliers, but a decent way to compare on some level.
