What is the biggest reason that the evo isn't "Iphone" smooth? I got to play with a Nexus S at bestbuy a week ago and it really was "Iphone" smooth. Is it fps or something else in the system? Before anyone flames me understand that I love my Evo and would never give it up for the iphone, just a honest and curious question. Thanks in advanced

It's true; well to be 100% accurate, not all of Android is HW accelerated. Some parts are.
On top of that the iPhone 4 has a PowerVR SGX 535 GPU which is twice as fast as the EVO's Adreno 200 GPU. For comparison, the Nexus S has the better PowerVR SGX 540 GPU (twice as fast as the 535 in the iPhone 4) but iOS's hardware acceleration still makes the UI smoother than the Nexus S with 2.3. It's rumored that Honeycomb will bring full HW acceleration and that should bring it to iOS/WP7 level smoothness for the GPUs it will support.

I don't know, could be a number of reasons. Android was first influenced by the blackberry OS and started changing it to be more iOS like once the iPhone was released. Could be that its taken this long to catch up to something which was lower in priority. Maybe it's because there are tons of GPUs on Android phones and its hard to support them all. A lot of the early Android phones were from HTC (which Google used to build the platform - G1, Ion, and only comparably, the N1) and had some pretty crap GPUs, maybe that held it back. Most likely it was a combination of these.

my girl has an iphone. i'd say i can make a pretty accurate comparison, being able to hold one in each hand at the same time.
don't get all butthurt because someone is saying you're wrong.
I'm not butthurt at all. I should have said iPhone4, because that is what I was referring to. If she has an older iPhone then I would say yes, the EVO *can be* smoother. But If she has an iPhone4, then you need to get your eyes checked.

I just played with a Galaxy with 2.2 Froyo. And I can honestly say I see absolutely no performance upgrade. Yes flash is there and a few added features we all no about in froyo. But nothing noticeable! There was still lag on the lock screen and animations. Market was better, browser seemed the same when I tested speed against my fascinate. Except flash.

not only is that right about development, but any froyo that you have played with that is out right now isnt final. supposedly samsung pulled it to make major optimizations and put their phones up to par with all the other froyo phones. we will not actually know how it runs on the fascinate to we get a build that is specific to the fascinate. Im still holding out a little hope, however ive never seen any lockscreen lag to begin with so dont know what thats all about.and once i put adw or LP as my launcher i really dont see any lag. it sticks for a second every once in a while but i never see the jitteryness that i had on my droid x, that she now has with froyo that is not one bit faster than my fascinate. i dont know about everyone else but im ready for that nice big LTE LG phone that we all saw on engadget and every other news site. that would be nice

I know I've heard this stated wrong a couple places. A major release is 1.x to 2.x and a minor release is x.1 to x.2 so the froyo update is a minor release. Most of the features are under the hood improvements. I've seen froyo on the evo and most of my friends didn'tnotice a difference.

Please. If you need to be told about performance to notice it, then its a placebo. Maybe you should re-read. The op never said they didn't know what froyo adds, as you insinuate. They said they didn't see a performance increase. Two very different things. Coming from Froyo on two different phones....a lot of these performance increases are situational, and not translating into overall performance increases.
Plus how can you say the op is wrong about galaxy s froyo if he had tried it and you have not? Samsung has a track record for screwing **** up.

Well, okay. Since you said please. Lol.
There's a notable performance difference is my point. Having played with quite a few 2.1 and 2.2 roms on my Nexus, it is night and day. Heavy apps and games load quicker and run smoother. Hard multitasking doesn't cause any drag. The browser is twice as fast running side by sides.
Ill speak more plainly then, so perhaps you can catch on to my point.
My mother in law plays farmville and checks email. If I upgrade her 1.8 ghz P4 with a gig of ram to a quad core 2.6 ghz and 6gb gaming memory, she really isn't going to see much of a performance difference in farmville and hotmail.
However, when I run photoshop, play with video editing, or crank up Fallout3, it will be very evident.
JIT is not a placebo. Nor is the V8 browser, or the kernel based memory management improvements that 2.2 brings.
So again, if you do not see the performance enhancements, then you do not know what you are looking for.
This is a statement, not an opinion.
As for samsung screwing it up, it is possible, though I won't care a whit as soon as I can get into either a clean AOSP froyo rom, or a CM port.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I've used a Nexus One before and after Froyo. We use the phone as a "computer" for research purposes. The performance upgrade may not be readily apparent to the average user but JIT really boosts performance for computations. Froyo also adds some API's that developers can use to boost performance.

Just can say : WOWEEEEHHHH !
A generic looking Starfox demo? I am still skeptical about the grafix race on smartphones. It's getting caught in the same mire as the PC. Tech demos that don't mean anything beyond fps counters and nerd bragging rights. The games that people actually play, like Magicka and Minecraft, can work on ancient hardware, not to mention WoW. As long as it helps multimedia use, UI acceleration, and power consumption, it is still justified. But beyond that when the focus is purely 3D gaming and the battery life goes to hell and the phone turns into a hand toaster, hopefully they will reel it in and stay pragmatic.

Battery life? The GPU and CPU will be 10x as efficient as the evo right now and rumored the phone comes with a 1730-1750 mah battery. HTC modified the evos kernel when the battery problem was awful and the devs here at xda took it even a step farther. The dual core will render graphics and multi tasking like a breeze without straining the phone. The rumored benchmarks are double the evo stock! I have mine being pushed at full speed and still get a day worth of battery out of it. The evo3d is a no brainier compared to the nexus s which is a year old and does not have an SD card.

+1 too big a step unfortunantley. In the era of 2011 you can't have single core proccesors anymore lol. Only thing I could think to make up for it is if it was the new snapdragon Krait proccessors which are appearently 75% more battery effecient
Honestly, I could do with a bit less processing power if it got me a better battery life. To me, battery life is the biggest downfall of Android phones. I just got a 1900mAh battery (slim, no cover needed), we'll see if it makes much difference...fingers crossed.

I wouldn't call a 1.2gHz phone crap. It won't be as fast as a dual core, like the 3D, but it will be faster than the shift, and have a larger, higher resolution display, plus Sense 3.0 from the start (I'm assuming this last part, since the resolution is 960x580, or whatever the 3D is). Plus, more ram, and possibly more rom than the shift.
It's nice to see "mid-range" phones with some decent specs, and not really far off from the halo phones. Depending on when I make my next phone purchase, I may get the Galaxy S2. I would really like my next phone to have a Super AMOLED screen.
So I had my hands on an ATT MB860, 4.5.91, Gingerbread Atrix, but returned it due to the immense lag with live wall papers and the incorrectly working speakerphone.
Does an unlaggy (with lwp) Atrix exist? I've seen a couple of demo 2.3.4. Atrix's at my local (United States) ATT stores, and seen that they react the same wya (immense lag, but quick to open web pages and apps). Are laggy Atrix's a result of quality control or the FW? Or does an unlaggy Atrix exist?
I dont experience any lag on my Atrix - I've had it since Feb 21st of this year. Got it on pre-order.

Sorry.... I now have the chance of either getting a Nexus S, or a replacement Atrix for my ATT service. I've heard of some Atrix's being flawlessly fast and smooth regardless, however, I still have not seen it with my phone + a couple of ATT's stores demo models. I was wondering if I should jump to a "future-proof" dual core Atrix or a presently smooth Nexus S.
Only you can answer that question.

I own both, Atrix is better. YMMV.

In what ways?.. I do know the Atrix has a better battery, processor, and light notification... what does the Nexus S usurp the Atrix on?
Why does everyone like live wallpapers. I never get them.

In addition to what you mentioned, speed, memory management (so many launcher redraws and apps closing with only 512 MB of RAM), and screen resolution are what makes the Atrix better for me.
However, the Nexus has a much brighter and more colorful screen, albeit with a lower resolution. Personally, I like the higher res screen on the Atrix.
About the only thing the NS has over the Atrix is the fact that it's supported by Google.

They are OK. I find it kind of odd that my "weaker" Captivate can run live wallpapers smoother than an Atrix. Shouldn't the Atrix be blazingly smooth?

You would think so but Moto did a bad job installing a bloated and heaving UI over the android OS. If you want that blazing speed than install CM7 like most of us have and its the quickest phone I've ever used.
no lag here at all

I think they are sometimes distracting, and too much of a battery drain myself...

I wouldn't say "most of us". I've never been impressed with cyanogen on any of my andriod phones.
