gotta say.. its nice..
My buddy FINALLY got an Android phone. The G2. He decided on that over the Sprint Evo Shift 4g.
The phone is built quality. I like the way '4g' utilizes the 3g radio, and not a separate radio to toggle. Automatically switches to the faster network.
4g tests, both had full bars. The Sprint 4g was consistently faster by alot, 6.5mps vs 2.5mps although on 2 occasions the Tmo 4g reached 6.5mps as well. Latency was consistently much lower on Tmo.
The keyboard, it took the epic for me to take interest in keyboards again (after horror of PPC6700/PPC6800-mogul) Quite a different feel in the buttons. They are big, although the overall footprint is smaller than the Epic's. And they are mushy feeling. I feel a harder button reacts faster for quick button mashing style texting.
At least for me. But is something I could get used to. The hinge I do no see to be a problem at all either.
The phone itself is a little weighty. But that goes hand in hand with the strong industrial feel. The use of metal vs plastic feels of quality build. Makes you feel like it will break you, before you break it.
Screen size 3.7in Super-TFT, as coming from the mammoth Evo's 4.3in screen foundation, down to the pretty 4.0in found in the Epic; I didn't miss it. Those of you spoiled by the Samoled, one thing you wouldn't get over are the black levels. Not nearly as breathtaking..
800Mhz was pretty quick in stock form. Didnt notice a difference between the Evo or Epic's powerplant while stabbing at the screen and instantly having a reaction.
Charging time. Typical HTC, utilizing fast charge system. Noticeable much faster charging system than what is implemented in the Samsung Epic. Placement of the charging port is a bit cumbersome for one-handed use, [protrudes from left of device] as one may find it difficult to manage in the left hand. But when using the slider, the port is located at the bottom now and is free from obstructing your commands.
Compass, sensors, GPS, and magnetic shielding. As expected, the HTC had no problems locking on being inside the home. I have to make mention that the Samsung also had no problem locking on under the same conditions.
The compass in both were accurate, [using the Compass app free in market] but the compass was much more reactive to every movement. Though I suspect the 6 axis accelerometer in the Epic to be reason.
While still using compass, holding the phones side by side resulted in the Epic's compass to completely change course. The Epic is terribly vulnerable to interference, as the G2's compass stayed rock solid. I am willing to bet that this is the result of lack of magnetic shielding.
So there you have it, my impressions of the G2. I find it hard to believe that I will purchase a Samsung mobile device anytime soon. As to me, HTC is still the best manufacture currently of phones out today. Not talking about whats on paper, but under real world use.

Thank you for that, just wanted to express my experience with the device. But it turned into a review the more I went on lol.
Yes I know its hard to wing off the Iphone users lol.
I admit I am anti-Iphone but its because of facts and opinion, not fanboyisms.
But my bud always had the candy bar phones from cricket, sprint, tmo, and he always could not understand why I am on my phone so much. This was even back when I had the mogul, diamond, hero etc.
its been growing on him after I have shown him things on the Evo and Epic. He admitted its cool, but he would never use all that. He just needs a phone to make calls and text he stated. The Epic really did a number on him because he know how I wireless tether, how pretty the screen is etc and wanted a phone to do all that now lol.
He first decided to get the android device from Cricket, the Ascend, and was curious if it could do at least half of what mine did. Well the very spotty coverage shot that out lol. The reason he is not on Sprint with the Shift, is because he didnt wanna spend the extra money of of pocket (rebate)
But even at that, he is paying off the phone monthy like 20$ <- you can beat Tmo with payment plans for phones. Wished Sprint did this.
My bud is super happy, never puts the phone down lol. I am glad to be such an influence.
Nice review man... I like to see our phones compared with others even though it seems to loose this one with the build quality and such... good job.

Maybe you should review the phone again and post it on youtube. My brother also has a ifail damn I mean iphone 3something. He can't stand the fact that android beats its in every way. Between the evo and epic kinda hard to say which phone truly owns the iphone

definetly the epic apple sucks... and im not a fanboy I've had 3 ipod touches and in order to stand them I have to jailbreak with android you can do a lot more without rooting.

I'd honestly say that the Epic owns pretty much every other phone...
... except for the build quality, support, and just the manufacturer in general. I must say that I love my phone. But, the GPS not working, the keyboard missing keys, and the crappy support just KILLS it.
I owned Htc MTS3gs and 2 samsumgs(Epic and Behold 2),i gotta say that from that expirience Samsung has better hardware and phones feel more solid, but MTS3Gs was so snappy and lag free for a 600mhz phone it was amazing even with Sense.
2G is only 3.7 screen and no Amoled so its no go for me.Until htc starts making Amoled screens im not fckin with them-i refuse to use regular lcd phone even if it has dual cpu and nvidia.
I got tired of my Epic missing keystrokes and Sprint's flaky 4G service so I switched to the G2.. Much happier. Here in Atlanta, HSPA+ is a steady 6mbps indoors and out, and like you said the latency is much lower.
If you want to jump ship to TMobile, this phone is being offered free with contract (I think) so it's definitely a good deal.
After dealing with the Moment and then the Epic's problems, I've gotta say that HTC is simply the better choice.
Thanks for that. I posted this morning, on my FB this: Debating ending my 8yr relationship with Sprint, and starting up TMO? I ended up with 58 replies in that thread. Yes I know I will miss the pretty screen, the hummingbird etc. but the G2 felt fast too. plus it can be OC beyond hell, takes advantage of JIT, Dev support etc.. its looking mighty fine lol
I gotta friend thats gonna hook me up with a good deal when i switch. gonna pickup the mytouch 4g for the baby mamma, and g2 for myself. BUT I will be back on the Sammy Vibrant 4G when that releases as it will utilized the UPGRADED HSPA+ 21mbps (and later on 41mbps)

Nice review, it is a nice phone. Just some input from a former Nexus One T-Mobile user. I absolutely loved my Nexus One but just could not put up with T mobiles spotty coverage hear in South Florida. It was almost unbearable. I truly believe carrier coverages vary from region to region but here in South Florida T Mobiles coverage was super spotty. Sprint coverage down here is definitely much better but I would love to see how the new T Mobile 4g coverage performs because Sprints 4g coverage is horrible! My phone is constantly going from 3g to 4g down here. Very annoying!

Nice review.
I actually bought the G2 the day it released(it's early release) and I loved it...Honestly the only unappealing thing I can think of is the screen quality compared to the Epic. Nothing beats the epics screen. But the G2 Blows the EVO away IMHO.
Unfortunately I seem to live in a t-mobile black hole and couldn't stand not being able to use the phone at home so I turned it in and got the Epic.
I do miss that phone...
thanks for the input! where I live at home I get badass coverage for 4g with Sprint.
now very true, the coverage is verrrrry spotty.. it works here and there in a 0.2 mile difference in distance.. even look up the coverage map and that even shows it.. I will have 14 days to decide TMO works for my needs, where I live and around. (also hate that 4g drops on the epic under load)

The hero was great but the processor is just not fast enough to keep up with android OS the way it should be run. I'm so happy! I knew sprint had something up there sleeves after the disaster at CES (only dropping the shift)
Well, they better not disappoint!! (again).. Im really looking forward to this.
I am in exactly the same boat as all of you. I've been up for an upgrade since October.
BTW... what are you guys planning to do about your upgrade if this phone is released in June?
Can you chime in on my thread about an upgrade at this link?

I'm pumped and I hope HTC does the EVO 3D, not LG. I did read about Qualcomm's new dual core chip and its supposed to blow away the Tegra 2 in performance and battery life. If LG does do the EVO 3D, then I'm going with Nexus S.

Well, I wonder if Sprint will make a special request of Samsung, like they did with the Epic, and have a Nexus S with a external storage. I would consider one, then. You know as there new dev unit, google and the devs here will be blowing that thing up. I just wish it wasn't a Samsung.

I qualified for upgrade since 11/1/10 and im elegible was wondering if after april 1st I'll keep my elegibility or will start from 0 .
yeah nexus s 4g NEEDS a memory card slot
If its the LG 3D phone then I think its powered by TI's OMAP4 SoC which from what I understand about it, blows pretty much everything out of the water, and uses significantly less power than other options.
I was an Nexus-One owner, loved the phone, but hated T-Mobile, too many dropped calls, and very poor building penetration around Chicago, inside skyscrapers and Basements T-Mobile drops dead. So I made the switch to Sprint and picked up the EVO 4G the first week it came out, and loved it. Never drop a call, and this phone works great in my Basement office, and inside buildings, where my two previous T-Mobile phones never worked ( Blackberry 9700 + Nexus-One )
But I got tired of the brick size feeling of the EVO, and poor battery life, even though I am rooted with custom ROM that helps double my battery life, it is pretty still bad. So I got the itch for the Nexus-S when it first came out, I said F. it, going back to T-Mobile to get this Nexus-S. I just LOVED the Nexus-S, great light featherweight, very compact and fits in pocket easily, the screen tech is beautiful, and 2.3 Gingerbread was great. It was by far my fav phone.
But after two weeks I returned it and came running back to Sprint and my EVO. It was not the fault of the Nexus-S, but the same T-Mobile issues I had 6 months ago with my Nexus-One and Blackberry, dropped calls, and **** connection when inside Basement office or deep inside tall buildings. For some reason Sprint is much better around Chicago if your in tall buildings.
So I think Sprint bringing the Nexus-S will be great, I will for sure get it. And it is good overall for the "Nexus" brand, gives it more exposure, and more accessories and stuff will be made for it. I think it would be cool if the "Nexus" brand just stayed with the non iPhone carriers like T-Mobile and Sprint. They say the Nexus is Google's version of the iPhone. So lets see the Nexus-3.0 come out at Christmas on both T-Mobile and Sprint only, and be the baddest ass phone ever created, and market the **** out of it to destroy the iPhone5

You will start from zero unless you have an individual plan that costs $89.99 or more a month, family plan that is $179.99, or been with Sprint for at least 10 years.

i used to have a g1. bought it the month after it came out. then got the g2 a month after it came out. i love my g2.
i may come into an opportunity to get a g2x for my g2. would you trade? i know the g2x has some issues but i'm gunna flash it so it should fix most problems. plus dual-core, 4.1'', front facing cam, hdmi? seems like a pretty good upgrade.
any1 get a g2x after having a g2? howd you feel after switchin?
I got the G2x before selling my G2, I do miss my G2 though, great phone!
I traded my wifes mytouch 4g for another G2 (so I can go back if I want to).
I haven't had any problems out of my G2x but, some have had problems.
If you have the opportunity to mess around with the G2x for awhile to make sure it doesn't have any problems that have popped up with others, I would go for the trade.
Even better if they want to do even trade.
I say its definitely worth it. However if you use the keyboard a lot and can't live without it then well things change

Little research shows that phone is having MAJOR issues. Hardware is amazing, but tmobile and lg need to pull the whole line until these issues aren't as rampant.

Nope, it's not HTC. LG's always have buttloads of issues, and terrible software support. If you think HTC is slow with them, you won't even get them after 6 months with LG.
Never been a fan of LG when it comes to phones.. just bad experiences with them. I have no problems with the G2, so I don't see any real need to change it to the G2x.
Lack of qwerty will definitely hold me off from getting g2x

Is it a straight trade or you adding cash? If it's a straight trade do it, and then sell the phone and buy the G2 back.
Had a G2x, I miss the keyboard so went back to G2. Typing without looking is always a +.
Definitely not worth it. Roommate has one and even after two returns its still a piece of junk even on stock rom. Random reboots, doesn't hold a charge for ****, lockups, white around the edge of the screen, and that's just touching the surface. Its a GORGEOUS phone and when it actually works it rocks, but like I said a year ago, the first gen dual cores were all gonna have problems that needed worked out. And his phone proves it.

The G2X looked really promising, but unfortunately people are having issues with it. I think it looks like a great device. I'm already seeing them for sale as low as $300 though. Its really a shame I thought this would be another good addition to the "G" line of phones for T-mobile.
I think some of the steam got taken from it when the Sensation 4G was announced as well.
If someone offered me one for my G2 I'd probably give it a whirl. I definitely don't think its a big downgrade or anything like that.

Build quality on the devices is amazing though. The screens used in them IMO not so great, but they are pretty sturdy phones, especially the 4g, so if the 4g slide is anything like the 4g as far as build quality then I'd get one, I'm not THAT much of a fan of the design, but it's a good upgrade from a G2 I think. Dual Core 1.2ghz and once it's rooted and we get CM7 running on it, it's going to be a badass phone. I definitely see the improvement over a single core phone when I used my G2x, even my Nexus S OC'd to 1.3ghz wasn't as smooth as my G2x, so I'm definitely eyeing that 4g slide.

Well I kinda got confused about it not having a keyboard. The G1 and G2 had keyboards, then all of a sudden they come out with the G2x from a different manufacturer with no keyboard. Idk.
LG hardware isn't the best, and I guess that's reflected in the current going sales price.
Having held the g2x I REALLY like the hardware, software is what is killing this thing.

Well, it seems as if it is time to move on from my amazing Vibrant. I have had this for about a year now and it has been my best and favorite phone to date. The devs have been amazing, and everyone on these forums have been fantastic as well.
This isn't a good by, just curious to see if any of you are moving on, and what your thoughts are on it? I would love to see some Team Whiskey on the Hercules, some CM7 love (thats a given), and even some Einherjar Dev's on the new phone.
So what do you say? Will i be seeing more of you in the near future?
Not to the SGS2.
I'm waiting for the Google/Samsung conference event next week and that will decide that. If Verizon is gonna have the exclusivity on the Prime for more than 6 months, I will pick up an HTC Amaze 4G. If not, I will wait 1-3 months and get the one phone to rule them all- Nexus Prime.
T-mobile's SGS2 is a tad outdated in its camera department, screen resolution, and audio output. It's a nice phone but the Amaze 4G is just a hair better imo due to it's back-lit illuminated camera. Nexus prime...well that's nexus prime. Obliterates every phone is just about every department.
I'm quite happy with my Vibrant for now though. CM7 themed beautifully and incredible usability coupled with 1.5Ghz CPU, 1800mah Samsung genuine battery, 32GB microSD +16 internal for 48GB total, audiophile-grade audio out, and impressive screen and form factor? Sorry but this phone is just now at its full potential and I see no reason to upgrade. 3400 Quadrants and no lag anywhere.
iPhone 4S or Nexus Prime, depending on Coverage and Price. I'm leaning towards the iPhone because the Battery Life is great, iCloud is good, and they have a better ecosystem than Google.
However, the rumored hardware in the Nexus Prime is enticing. If it's on T-Mobile, though... I'm gonna have to pass. Dunno why Google keeps launching Nexus phones on T-Mobile. They have the worst coverage of hte 4 carriers, by far.
I'm moving in a few weeks, so I'll have to wait and see how it all pans out...

Coverage depends where you at. Also T-Mobile is developer friendly. Cyanogen and his team have gotten free phones and tablets to develop on for t-mobile. I don't know what your talking about but Google cloud system is far superior than icloud. Battery life will always be great on a device that can only take low speed 3g. Hspa+,LTE,Wiimax all use higher bandwidth than. Which cause more battery drain. To be specific T-Mobile coverage on the east side is better than at&t and Sprint coverage. On the west aide at&t is has better coverage. Also Verizon has the best coverage all around but be ready to pay an arm and a leg.

Sprint has bad service and doesn't really penetrate walls Hspa+ speeds get the same as wimax speeds. Not to mention T-Mobile has lower ping speeds as well. Let's not mention that if your phone breaks you need to buy a new phone instead of just switching sim cards. This phone is also fully aws compatible. As for throttling I never reached the cap to be throttle and all my apps sync every 5 minutes. Unless your tether all day and streaming YouTube or some video app you never reach it.

The future looks very bright for Samsung. They have Cyanogen on board now which means more source code releases from Sammy and early CM8 release for Galaxy S2. Sammy has better hardware, better screen than HTC and thinner form factor. Im getting the S2 on Oct 12th.
I love the Nexus Prime too but apparently its a Verizon only release (which is why they dont have a Galaxy S2 model) and I dont want to wait 6 months for a GSM version to be released. Also there is word that Ice Cream Sandwich release is being pushed back.
I think I'm gonna wait for the prime. The Hercules seems great with a beefed up cpu but i can see driver problems in the future.
I wanted to get the Samsung Note but that seems that it will only come to at&t.
I don't see myself leave Tmobile anytime soon due to I use over 5g of data a month, I live in the east cost so all networks are about the same, also free tehrering and sum card switching.

I have been loyal to T-Mo for a loooong time, but as much as I travel, I need a network that is faster in more places (I spend a lot of time wishing I even had EDGE). I already have a VZW MiFi, and I depend on it. Running CM7 with no WiFi Calling can often leave me in the dust on cell reception.
I've always been a fan of Samsung hardware, but I'm not a fan of Touchwiz and the speed of updates. Not just from Samsung, but any manufacturer that is applying their own framework to the mix. I really, really enjoy tinkering with things, and if there's one thing I've learned from my Vibrant (which is my first Android phone) it's that not having a pure Google phone really hinders the process.
That said, if Verizon gets an ACTUAL Nexus device (pure Google) with LTE, then I'll move on over. If not, I'll cross my fingers and hope T-Mobile gets it like they always do and I'll just stay put. Swapping to AT&T or Sprint isn't in the equation, even if they somehow were the only one's with the "Prime". I won't swap if LTE isn't in the equation since here, locally, T-Mobile beats the pants off of EVDO in the speed department.
I honestly believe that people put to much hype into phone specs. No one can tell the difference between processors or much of anything else under the hood. It's fun to talk about and I enjoy geeking out about it all, but hardware changes every 6 months anyway. If you're buying a device based purely on hardware specs, you'll always be disappointed when the next thing comes out 3 months later.
i'll probably kill any one at the store to get one on the release date
okay... kill is a bit overboard, but a would not mind pushing people aside, or jump on them to get it muahahahahaha

Long time reader, occasional poster.

I love the Nexus Prime too but apparently its a Verizon only release (which is why they dont have a Galaxy S2 model) and I dont want to wait 6 months for a GSM version to be released. Also there is word that Ice Cream Sandwich release is being pushed back.

yes, it has been confirmed already the delay for the ICS and Nexus Prime launch, it's all over the news

I think I'm gonna wait for the prime. The Hercules seems great with a beefed up cpu but i can see driver problems in the future.
I wanted to get the Samsung Note but that seems that it will only come to at&t.
I don't see myself leave Tmobile anytime soon due to I use over 5g of data a month, I live in the east cost so all networks are about the same, also free tehrering and sum card switching.

same here, i wanted also the Prime and Note
unfortunately Prime will not be available on GSM anytime soon it seems
and the Note is only on the normal GSM frequency that is not AWS compatible
so that's why the SGS2 Hercules is the best toy until Nexus 3 Prime becomes available on AWS bands
No, I wont get any US version GSII
Id love to get one to work on...but im broke so probably not =/
I'm getting it, I'm pretty tired of my vibrant, this is the longest I've had my phone lol, so definitely wanting something new.

Which phone would you choose?
The one(s) I'm really interested in is:
1. Samsung Epic 4g Touch
2. Motorola Photon 4g
3. Nexus S 4g
Just would like to get some opinions on these or whatever you all think?

Looking at the photon myself....next week is upgrade time, and not interested in any Samsung products....
And from everthing I've read the nexus radio sucks...

I've got the photon (had it for about 6 weeks) and can say that it's a great phone. Runs smooth as butter. The only issue i've had was some overheating, but that was my fault and not a hardware or OS issue.
If I had the option of switching, I would turn it down and stay with the photon.

I'm leaning more toward the Photon but, the Epic is close.
The manager told me that the Photon is better suited for the network expansion Sprint is planning on.
I've had the photon and now epic touch 4g, and they are both great phones on their own respect.
The photon has better cell reception than the epic and has great call quality. The epic is ok, just not photon quality. If you do alot of multitasking and web browsing the epic is blazing fast and you won't experience no lag whatsoever. The photon is a great phone but when multitasking it became a little laggy, but not a deal breaker. As far as screen resolution, imo the epic edges out the photon. Even though the photon has better resolution the epic just looks better. I don't know how this was achieved but the super amoled+ is nice.
Build quality the photon was nice and felt good in hand. the epic is nice and I really like the slim proflle. It is a huge screen but I like it, since I have big hands its not hard to handle. Either way both phones are great and won't be disappointed with which one you decide go with.

Epic Touch is a monster phone. I've become attached to Samsung since the original Epic 4G due to the Super Amoled screen. You just can't get enough of it.
Still haven't made up my mind on which one to get. Why does it have to be so difficult!
If you want android, it's the (possible) Nexus Prime.
But I'm lusting after the HTC Arrive. I had one for a week and I loved it.
Get the best of the best. Epic 4G Touch or the iPhone 4s.
I'm in the same boat as you.
The key differences are:
Photon has a better radio and has a gsm radio as well
Photon's built is heavier in a good way
Photon has pentile display which causes pixalated effect.
Epic has a better SoC including graphics and Cpu
ram is the same i don't know about nand though. Epic will prolly have a better dev community though but the photon has an alpha of cyanogen's out.
Nexus s is still a solid phone but if getting a pure google experience wait a month for the nexus prime announcement. (maybe the price of the current phone will drop a bit?)
Well, we didn't go with Sprint. Said they would give me 5 lines if we faxed some paperwork to them. Did that and, the manager at Sprint corporate took 5 line offer away.
Said I could only have 3 lines right now and add 2 more in a year.
Went to Verizon and got 5 lines no problem. I can tell you Verizon 4g is no joke.

you probably no longer qualified after they reviewed the paper work,i like when people leave things out but anyway, back to the topic at hand, go with the photon, i work at sprint, and messed with all 3 phones, the photon has the best radios, signal, battery life, right out the box!!! a lot of people say there's no development, but think of it this way, if the phone was perfect out of the box, why would there be development??? lol, but i digress, sprint offers the best plans with NO data caps OR speed restriction, just one fee, and your in the world of unlimited!!!!!
Sprints unlimited won't last forever....I already canceled my MBB...

Oh I left out that Sprint wanted to be sure we had 5 lines at T-Mobile.
We sure did and, they still reneged on the deal! Some people!
