So I just got the droid 2 (had the droid 1). I bought this new phone and obviously wanted to root it like my old phone. See the ROMs that people have made, etc. I got root access and used root explorer to delete some system stuff (bloatware, etc.) and restarted and did that again (proving I had perm root). I flashed, or so I thought, the new recovery using rom manager and restarted holding x. Yeah... stock recovery. WTF? Am I missing something? Is my root broken? Bueller?!
Ou have to use droid 2 bootstrap

so then how do you install a custom rom? everytime i try the update.zip method i get stuck in bootloops. if clockworkmod cant get into recovery then it cant do the update by its method (the easy method).
Ok, so I'm not sure what exactly is going on. Your stuck in a bootloop?
If so, then use the SBF to get back to factory stock. Follow the directions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770224
The link to the SBF there is broken i believe, but you can find it here:
hxxp://www.droid-life.com/2010/11/01/droid-2-sbf-released-for-2-3-20-update/ (replace xx with tt obviously)
Then reroot and instead of using ROM manager, just get Koush's bootstrap recovery to get to clockworkmod recovery. Once the apk is installed, hit bootstrap recovery, give su access, and then once it says successful, hit reboot recovery.
Be sure your ROM is on your sdcard.
Before you flash the ROM, you need to mount /data and /system. You also need to wipe data and cache (be sure you remount /data and /system after this)
Then go to install zip from sdcard. Then hit choose zip from sdcard. Find your ROM and flash away. Hope this helps
Forget what you know about the D1. The D2 is an entirely different device. Read the installs to roms don't just flash because you think you know how to do it. You can't use ROM manager without koush's bootstrap first. I've never had ROM manager ever because koush's bootstrap does everything you need to flash ROMs and what not on the D2 because moto locked it's bootloader.
Clockwork from the bootstrap won't take out stock recovery we can only access it after the phone boots a little then we can hijack the boot and get into clockwork.

Will the bootloader ever be unlocked? I like being able to access nandroid without booting the phone. It gives me a sense of security. Damn moto for doing this. Why dont they allow rom hacking? Do they fear security issues or hidden exploits? ITS FREAKIN CREATIVITY. and its spawns new developers...
Well someone commented on a Motorola YouTube video about the locked bootloader, and Motorola told them if they want to load roms and the like to buy a different brand phone. Then Moto came out with an official statement saying they were sorry for the comment and that they will be looking into more dev friendly bootloaders in the future. I doubt the D2 will ever see this though. I'll bet it will only effect new phones.
Oh thats what that whole scandal was about. I heard about that. And the motorola spokesperson answered something like "buy a different phone cuz rooting isnt for this one". Could motorola possibly change the bootloader OTA? I would like them to...

Why is that? I mean a bootloader can't be that difficult to create. Especially if the idea is to make it more simple. On the other hand, does anyone think devolopers will unlock the bootloader?
Sent from my DROID2
The bootloader will never be cracked. Period. And motorola may change it on future devices but its not gunna change on the x or 2. Like motorola said if you want to root and install roms get a different device.

Now are you just being pessimistic or realistic? Why would it never be cracked? People probably thought that about nand lock at first...

Well they got that part wrong. We can root and flash roms. Just can't do anything with kernels and the like.... truely sad to hold this device back like that...

So in response I will rephrase my question. If we have come this far. Would you say that the Droid 2 is a project in progress or that developers have gone as far as they can.

Well I'm not dev and have limited knowledge, but I would say there isn't too much more they can do besides refine their awesome ROMs. Hopefully in future devices, Motorola will give us a way to unlock the bootloader, or they could be loosing big business.
I think I might email fabulous or some other 2/X dev. I really would like to know if its just a software lock that hasn't been... well unlocked. Or something is actually virtually impossible to change. I really don't wanna switch services to get a nice slider android with a decent cpu.

Motorola has actually put a chip called the "efuse" inside the phones that locks down the bootloader. They may be able to disable it through a firmware update, but I'm not sure.
Thanks for pointing me to efuse. That seems really annoying... I don't really see the benefit in using a chip like that. Outside of intentionally preventing unauthorized roms. How unfortunate...
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
They probably do it to prevent idiots from attempting to mess with the phone's entrails (if you will) and then howling when they mess something up and demanding a free replacement phone.
true that. I would probably cry too if I didn't know how to sbf. I don't even see how its possible to "brick" a phone unless you're a dev that's actually creating something new. Its hard to hose your /system. This stupid locked bootloader does make it a bit more heartbreaking when you get a bootloop. I hate praying for the recovery after a battery pull... why can't I just hit "x"! :'(

I love the cm7 and wish someone would make a cm7 rom for the D2.
Its pretty much impossible with the locked bootloader. Cm7 needs a custom kernel that the locked bootloader doesn't allow, so were stuck with stock.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App
well that sucks.
Try liberty, it's about as good as it gets at the moment. I think keyjar is also working on a gummyJar GB version, which should be a solid rom as well. There is a working UD port for D2, but it's still on RC2 and hasn't been updated in a while, though I ran it for a few weeks and it was pretty solid. Liberty GB is also in the works, though not publicly available atm. CM7 isn't really necessary for the D2, since most of what you would get can be had in other roms currently available, just via some different means.
any way to get the lockscreen gestures currently?
Cm7 DOES NOT need a custom rom. It will run better if it does but it's not required. But we don't have aosp Rome such as cm7 because the locked bootloader makes it hard to make things work
Sent from my DROID2
Alright I wanna clear this up.
Cyanogenmod is a custom rom. We can install those on our Droid 2/X devices with Koush's Bootstrap tool. That said, we cannot install a custom kernel. Thus, cm-kernel for Droid 2/X is probably not going to happen anytime soon. However, that is not to say that Cyanogenmod 7 requires a specific kernel. I see no reason why Cyanogenmod 7 could not run on the stock Motorola kernel.
Moving on, cvpcs is working on a Cyanogenmod port for Droid X (and thus also Droid 2). When the rom will be stable, however, is unclear. As far as I understand, it's not really working.
-Zane
More importantly, this is the development section, not the request section. There is no request section for a good reason.

Ok, for those who aren't searching these days...
1 - Cyanogen won't come out officially with a D2 port until Moto unlocks the bootloader
2 - Cyanogen actually doesn't need a custom kernel to do what it does
2a - Go use Liberty..its effectively Cyanogen sans a 'custom kernel' and does all the same.
Me, I'm flashing back to stock for a while. Liberty 2.0 is causing me some headaches as of late and I can't download @#$ from the market it seems cause its like everything is fricken blocked now.

I thought Motorola stated that they would unlock the bootloader, but it was up to the carriers whether or not they would allow for it.
Jordan umts is the codename of the Defy... which is also locked.... and we are the 4th device in cyanogen 7 number of installs stats

Originally, yes, it was Motorola's policy to lock the bootloader, but they had announced recently that they would leave the bootloader unlocked, at least for phones on carriers that allowed it (so, I would at least guess that AT&T would be out of the picture, since they've even been controlling of the ability to sideload apps).
Working on it come help if you can:

So I've just got a droid x and I'm pretty confused here, as I'm used to other phones where it's just root->flash new rom. How does it exactly work for the droid x and what are its limitations? I know there's some kind of lock(s) or whatever on it but I'm pretty uneducated here, Like, why is there no CyanogenMod support, but there are other ROMs available? Is there a different process of flashing for the droidx apart from other phones? Thank you

The only difference is the locked Bootloader. That means (for now) that you can't have custom kernels, which Cyanogen usually has. The locked bootloader also means that you need a bootstrapper (available in market) in order to get clockwork to boot. Other than that rooting and flashing roms is pretty much standard.
hi guys I have a HTC BOLT , familiar with that phone. Now my gf have a droid x which I'm not too familiar with. Its rooted and flashed to Cricket. I want to ask if I flash it to a custom Rom would i lose the Cricket flash also ? If not then how do I flash a custom Rom? If anyone is willing to help I'll paypal ya =) . I'm not really familiar with what android version Cricket currently has on the Droid X, but I just picked up one this week from C Spire. My best suggestion would be to just root and uninstall any preinstalled apps that you couldn't otherwise if you don't have to sbf for your carrier and android version readily available. I'll actually be returning my phone this morning because I made the mistake of trying to flash Liberty3, and it somehow has FUBAR'd the bootloader on my end (absolutely no luck with the sbf using rsd lite or sbf flash on ubuntu).
Coming from the HTC Hero, I can go ahead and tell you that the way these two companies do bootloaders are entirely different beasts. The Hero was an absolute breeze to root and flash roms on, but that may also have been because of its huge userbase at one point as well. Anyways, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by losing the Cricket flash, but the original rom will be completely replaced if you flash the rom correctly (wiping data, cache, and dalvik from the bootloader).
edit:
After Googling some terms for the Droid X on Cricket, I don't think you'll have nearly as much of an issue if you follow the guides available. Just read carefully and always do a nandroid backup if possible.

You will not lost the flash unless you SBF, or upgrade to gingerbread if your not currently on it. The worst part about flashing custom ROM's is getting everything working again. What I mean about everything working is MMS, and web. MMS is the hardest. Try my thread here http://www.cricketusers.com/verizon-motorola-droid-x/12264-working-apn-mms-apk.html#post21416 and see if you can get it working. Before doing anything make a backup so you can fall back onto a working rom.

Honestly with a locked bootloader progress will be very slow. It's the one thing keeping me from trading in my s3 for one, I love the smaller size.

Looks like Hashcode may be working on CWM for the Razr HD and possible Razr M at some point. From his Twitter @Hashcode0f yesterday:

If you don't know Hashcode he is an amazing dev that has Safetrap (which is a method to install CWM/TWRP on Motorolas with locked bootloaders) working on the Droid 3, 4, Bionic and OG Razr. Along with some help from others he has also got kexec working on these devices which allows you to bypass the locked bootloader and load a custom kernel.

Follow Hashcode0f on Twitter for updates. On the 24th he when someone asked his about safe strap for the Razr M he said: "Yes. Working on some bugs with the new splashscreen supporting softkeys." He recently switched to TWRP instead of CWM for Safestrap so it sounds like he is working on that for the Razr M and I imagine the HD eventually. Hashcodes working on a bunch of devices, Kindle Fire, Droid 3, Bionic, Razr, Droid 4, and sounds like he's starting on more. Droid 3 users were left on GB with a locked bootloader and he has been able to, with the help of others, use a kexec bootloader bypass to give us a 3.x custom kernel and CM9/CM10.
I've been watching the Razr M forums, because I'm thinking it will be my next phone. I can't stand all of these large phones, I want something pocketable, but with decent specs and build quality. I've been impressed with the build quality and radios on Motorola hardware, not so impressed with the lack of software updates, but I think with new management that is going to change. The Razr M is the only phone I've seen in a while on Verizon that fits my requirements.
