So I've just got a droid x and I'm pretty confused here, as I'm used to other phones where it's just root->flash new rom. How does it exactly work for the droid x and what are its limitations? I know there's some kind of lock(s) or whatever on it but I'm pretty uneducated here, Like, why is there no CyanogenMod support, but there are other ROMs available? Is there a different process of flashing for the droidx apart from other phones? Thank you

The only difference is the locked Bootloader. That means (for now) that you can't have custom kernels, which Cyanogen usually has. The locked bootloader also means that you need a bootstrapper (available in market) in order to get clockwork to boot. Other than that rooting and flashing roms is pretty much standard.

I just rooted my friends R2-D2 phone, and im wondering if their are any Roms for it. all that i have seen have been made for the regular droid 2
I don't really belong in the droid 2 forums, but last time i checked the r2-d2 is the same as the regular droid 2.
There are version differences, droid 2=2.2.0 and the r2d2=2.4.5 (I think), and I think (don't quote me) some bootloader changes they made. The sbf for the regular droid 2 won't work for the r2d2 and the roms are the same way (I think). It's best to wait for the r2d2 sbf to be released before anyone flashes roms or they could end up with a bricked r2d2 droid 2.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I've never seen a description of differences, it's possible there is no clear cut description anywhere yet of whats different between the D2 and the R2D2. However, on every ROM for the D2 it generally has a disclaimer stating that you will probably brick your R2D2 if you flash it, so I'd leave the ROMs alone for the time being, unless you are very brave
As I just then ordered my Milestone 2 I have some general questions:
1. Is there this thing called "eFuse" on my Milestone 2 and how does it affect my user experience? Is this "eFuse" already hacked so we can do whatever we want?
2. Milestone 2 = Droid2 ? Will there be differences in software updates? e.g. droid 2 gets gingerbread. Can I download this update on my Droid2?
3. Is there any way to inactivate moto blur?
I'm fairly new to this corner of the forum, coming from the xperia x1. Latter one was a fine device but I'm looking forward to some new experience! Tell me what you have learned =)
eFUSE is basically a lock on the bootloader. Until it is cracked, and it currently isn't, we're stuck with whatever Motorola puts in the bootloader. This means no custom kernels and no going back once you've updated to the latest bootloader.
Not quite. It appears that Droid 2 ROMs will not work with the Milestone 2.
Not at the moment. Fission for the Droid 2 has Blur removed but it won't work on the Milestone 2.

There are workarounds in place on the D2 and D2 Global and they can be applied to the Milestone 2 as far as I've seen mostly just a bootstrapped recovery and an exploit to root and Various ROMs.

Depends on the update I believe the D2 G and the Milestone 2 have newer software than the D2 original so updates will depend on a separate version being released for the different firmware and radios (D2 is CDMA, D2 G is CDMA/GSM, and Milestone is only GSM as far as I know) I believe some of the devs are trying to develop ROMs for the Milestone 2 and some have been for the D2 G already (but they have to be careful because the SBF isn't out yet.)

On the D2 and D2 G (and soon to be Milestone 2 from the sound of it) there is a specific ROM, Fission that has no blur unless you add some specific blur components (like camera and music application).

I would read through how things are done on the D2 and D2 G because these devices have a locked bootloader because of eFuse and Moto so we don't have new kernels (only kernel modules added) so highly modded ROMs like CM6 and things of that sort can't be ported straight over without heavy tweaking but i'm not a dev so that's better explained by someone who knows firsthand about that stuff.
Thank-you, Spitemare and newk8600
So there is a locked bootloader that only allows small modifications (or kernel-moduls) but the kernel itself can't be changed, right? That means f.e. if we have Android 2.2 on our Droid/Milestone 2 we can't have any Android 2.1 or 1.6 ROMs on our device, right? But modificated 2.2 ROMs that have the same kernel run on our devices... but I have to be careful to distinguish between Milestone and Droid updates/themes/tweaks...
Furthermore official updates have to be for Milestone instead for taking Droid 2 updates, right?
What is SBF?
edit_ puts phone back to stock mode, right? What does SBF stand for?
What are you using Droid 2 or Milestone 2?
Btw: there is this possible rooting. What possibilities do I have with a rooted device - like admin rights on a computer?

Yup. We're stuck with whatever kernel Motorola provides in their latest update. Once you apply such an update there is no going back.

System Boot File. A SBF basically returns your device to the stock deployment. It will be just as it was when you opened the box.

You can remove installed apps like the crappy Blockbuster app. You can also use third party apps to enable wireless tether. Rooted devices can also be overclocked and run apps that can require more permissions than would be available otherwise, like automatic switching from 2G to 3G.

Spitemare is correct but you can't just think computer you have to think linux/unix specifically. In windows viruses and such can do lots of chaos even if they don't have admin rights but linux/unix(which android is based on) anyone trying to get into the sensitive files of the system need root access or those files are locked down and not accessible.
I love the cm7 and wish someone would make a cm7 rom for the D2.
Its pretty much impossible with the locked bootloader. Cm7 needs a custom kernel that the locked bootloader doesn't allow, so were stuck with stock.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App
well that sucks.
Try liberty, it's about as good as it gets at the moment. I think keyjar is also working on a gummyJar GB version, which should be a solid rom as well. There is a working UD port for D2, but it's still on RC2 and hasn't been updated in a while, though I ran it for a few weeks and it was pretty solid. Liberty GB is also in the works, though not publicly available atm. CM7 isn't really necessary for the D2, since most of what you would get can be had in other roms currently available, just via some different means.
any way to get the lockscreen gestures currently?
Cm7 DOES NOT need a custom rom. It will run better if it does but it's not required. But we don't have aosp Rome such as cm7 because the locked bootloader makes it hard to make things work

Alright I wanna clear this up.
Cyanogenmod is a custom rom. We can install those on our Droid 2/X devices with Koush's Bootstrap tool. That said, we cannot install a custom kernel. Thus, cm-kernel for Droid 2/X is probably not going to happen anytime soon. However, that is not to say that Cyanogenmod 7 requires a specific kernel. I see no reason why Cyanogenmod 7 could not run on the stock Motorola kernel.
Moving on, cvpcs is working on a Cyanogenmod port for Droid X (and thus also Droid 2). When the rom will be stable, however, is unclear. As far as I understand, it's not really working.

More importantly, this is the development section, not the request section. There is no request section for a good reason.

Ok, for those who aren't searching these days...
1 - Cyanogen won't come out officially with a D2 port until Moto unlocks the bootloader
2 - Cyanogen actually doesn't need a custom kernel to do what it does
2a - Go use Liberty..its effectively Cyanogen sans a 'custom kernel' and does all the same.
Me, I'm flashing back to stock for a while. Liberty 2.0 is causing me some headaches as of late and I can't download @#$ from the market it seems cause its like everything is fricken blocked now.

I thought Motorola stated that they would unlock the bootloader, but it was up to the carriers whether or not they would allow for it.
Jordan umts is the codename of the Defy... which is also locked.... and we are the 4th device in cyanogen 7 number of installs stats

Originally, yes, it was Motorola's policy to lock the bootloader, but they had announced recently that they would leave the bootloader unlocked, at least for phones on carriers that allowed it (so, I would at least guess that AT&T would be out of the picture, since they've even been controlling of the ability to sideload apps).
Working on it come help if you can:

Hello everyone, I'm somewhat of a novice still to rooting android phones. I had the Samsung Fascinate previously, and it was a really simple process..but I had returned it for a Droid 2 R2D2 edition a week or so afterwards. Ever since then I've had the desire to root it and install a custom rom (something vanilla gingerbread or equivalent) to it, but I've been so confused about the differences between the Droid 2 R2D2 edition from the regular Droid 2 that I've been too intimidated to venture into world of it. But tomorrow I'm getting the Droid X2 probably (unless someone here would like to suggest a different phone) and I'm willing to experiment
So my question is..can someone give me a general idea of the process I need to take for my Droid 2 R2D2 from rooting to the rom I should use? Thanks guys!
Use z4 root
It is the easiest way.
It may not work first time, just reboot the phone if it doesn't and it should work the second time.
Search for the latest z4root apk on google (I don't know if its in the market)
As for roms, I have no idea if d2 roms will work with the r2d2. Check out fission rom at teamdefuse.net
Contact one of the developers and ask them
Sent from my Fission Droid2 Global
Also remember before flashing any roms, you must install the droid 2 bootstrap application (because of the locked bootloader)
This can be found on the market

Honestly with a locked bootloader progress will be very slow. It's the one thing keeping me from trading in my s3 for one, I love the smaller size.

Looks like Hashcode may be working on CWM for the Razr HD and possible Razr M at some point. From his Twitter @Hashcode0f yesterday:
"sent me over everything I need to start working on a Safestrap for the RAZR-HD. I can probably do a build for RAZR-M as well."
If you don't know Hashcode he is an amazing dev that has Safetrap (which is a method to install CWM/TWRP on Motorolas with locked bootloaders) working on the Droid 3, 4, Bionic and OG Razr. Along with some help from others he has also got kexec working on these devices which allows you to bypass the locked bootloader and load a custom kernel.

Follow Hashcode0f on Twitter for updates. On the 24th he when someone asked his about safe strap for the Razr M he said: "Yes. Working on some bugs with the new splashscreen supporting softkeys." He recently switched to TWRP instead of CWM for Safestrap so it sounds like he is working on that for the Razr M and I imagine the HD eventually. Hashcodes working on a bunch of devices, Kindle Fire, Droid 3, Bionic, Razr, Droid 4, and sounds like he's starting on more. Droid 3 users were left on GB with a locked bootloader and he has been able to, with the help of others, use a kexec bootloader bypass to give us a 3.x custom kernel and CM9/CM10.
I've been watching the Razr M forums, because I'm thinking it will be my next phone. I can't stand all of these large phones, I want something pocketable, but with decent specs and build quality. I've been impressed with the build quality and radios on Motorola hardware, not so impressed with the lack of software updates, but I think with new management that is going to change. The Razr M is the only phone I've seen in a while on Verizon that fits my requirements.

He mentioned making his work available on the locked Ms someday. If they can get the kexec bootloader bypass working with safestrap then the locked Razr Ms will become a lot more dev friendly.
