Hello everyone, I'm somewhat of a novice still to rooting android phones. I had the Samsung Fascinate previously, and it was a really simple process..but I had returned it for a Droid 2 R2D2 edition a week or so afterwards. Ever since then I've had the desire to root it and install a custom rom (something vanilla gingerbread or equivalent) to it, but I've been so confused about the differences between the Droid 2 R2D2 edition from the regular Droid 2 that I've been too intimidated to venture into world of it. But tomorrow I'm getting the Droid X2 probably (unless someone here would like to suggest a different phone) and I'm willing to experiment
So my question is..can someone give me a general idea of the process I need to take for my Droid 2 R2D2 from rooting to the rom I should use? Thanks guys!
Use z4 root
It is the easiest way.
It may not work first time, just reboot the phone if it doesn't and it should work the second time.
Search for the latest z4root apk on google (I don't know if its in the market)
As for roms, I have no idea if d2 roms will work with the r2d2. Check out fission rom at teamdefuse.net

Also remember before flashing any roms, you must install the droid 2 bootstrap application (because of the locked bootloader)

Had my Droid 1 now for about 7 months, love it, but have always wondered about rooting. Finally did it last night with this great, easy method via Android Forums and Droid Forums - way to root FRG22D without downgrading first, using SDK, Motorola drivers, and rageagainstthecage. Long story short, unless I've missed something, what I have now is stock FRG22D rooted.
Question from this noob is - Are there themes for stock, rooted FRG22D or do I have to load something like Cyanogen or Bugless in order to get any other themes at all?
Apologies if I'm totally missing the boat here...
Load cm6 there are tons of themes, and the rom rules. I'm sure you'll love it as much as i do.

I just rooted my friends R2-D2 phone, and im wondering if their are any Roms for it. all that i have seen have been made for the regular droid 2
I don't really belong in the droid 2 forums, but last time i checked the r2-d2 is the same as the regular droid 2.
There are version differences, droid 2=2.2.0 and the r2d2=2.4.5 (I think), and I think (don't quote me) some bootloader changes they made. The sbf for the regular droid 2 won't work for the r2d2 and the roms are the same way (I think). It's best to wait for the r2d2 sbf to be released before anyone flashes roms or they could end up with a bricked r2d2 droid 2.

I've never seen a description of differences, it's possible there is no clear cut description anywhere yet of whats different between the D2 and the R2D2. However, on every ROM for the D2 it generally has a disclaimer stating that you will probably brick your R2D2 if you flash it, so I'd leave the ROMs alone for the time being, unless you are very brave

I agree, so far the original rooted GB leak is working great for me. I see no reason to update at all. Looking at the thread over at mydroidworld it sounds like lots of people are having problems and going back to Froyo or the original GB leak. In fact it sounds like there's more issues with .588 than there are wtih .573.

Exactly the same as you got the Droid x bootstrap. Download it and install.
For those asking why everyone is switching and why you should switch, all the devs are making roms for the new one and not the old one. So unless you're happy with stock and blur, you may want to switch

Ahh yes, very good point. For now though I'm satisfied with stock & blur. Just happy to have everything working and plan on leaving it alone for a bit.
I have some questions and comments on the rooted 2.3.3
First off, I'm still new both to android and the droid x, the community has been amazing at help and knowledge.
I was able to update to the new 2.3.3 rooted version after a bit of trial and error with sbf, droid 2 bootstrap and droid x bootstrap, and everything else too. The only thing I did right the first time was download the needed files.
I bootlooped many times.
I finally got it right by taking my current setup (2.2.1 rooted, running apex 1.4.1), sbf' ing to stock, rooting and replacing my droid x bootstrap backup, installing droid 2 bootstrap and making another backup, deleting and un installing droid x backup, making a titanium back up, then wiping data cache, flashing all 3 zips from tbh then restoring data and apps.

I think that's the right way, took me many tries to get it right. Like I said I'm new.
I do know older roms wouldn't work, like my apex 1.4.1 - it just put me in a boot loop. So did trying to restore a droid x bootstrap backup using droid 2 bootstrap. No good. Think phone hung up on extract in cwm recovery that time. It was a mess trying to get it right.
I learned a bit though.
What I'm wondering now is how long before a blur rom with no bloat but blur media functionality?
And why drop box and root explorer keep force closing, hell adw launcher has force closed too.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome, I could do without any judgments or criticisms though. Heh.

the only issueci had going from. 588 to. 588rooted was during the sbf. I had to run it 3 times after failures, was worried do the new bootloader. but the,3rd time was the charm. been running great.

That's one of the few problems I didn't have. I had put the new 2.3.3 on then the next day had to start over for the rooted one.

So I've just got a droid x and I'm pretty confused here, as I'm used to other phones where it's just root->flash new rom. How does it exactly work for the droid x and what are its limitations? I know there's some kind of lock(s) or whatever on it but I'm pretty uneducated here, Like, why is there no CyanogenMod support, but there are other ROMs available? Is there a different process of flashing for the droidx apart from other phones? Thank you

The only difference is the locked Bootloader. That means (for now) that you can't have custom kernels, which Cyanogen usually has. The locked bootloader also means that you need a bootstrapper (available in market) in order to get clockwork to boot. Other than that rooting and flashing roms is pretty much standard.
So for the last few days I have decided to root my phone but it is so confusing for me.

my friend told me to use clockwork reset or reformat... something like that and then use clock work root.
ive been googling and using this website forever and i need help.

Download Droid x bootstrapper or Droid 2 bootstrapper,,and u can root with z4 root or gingerbreak,,make a backup download a rom,download and install busybox and tittanium back up make a back up of all your apps and data with tittanium,,but also make a back up of your original rom,,,to get started rite now go to the android market and download (root and me Free) it will explain alot and help u out a bunch down load it now root and me free

Also, on the app store bootstrap says " YOU MUST BE ROOTED TO USE THIS APPLICATION. FOR DROID X ONLY."

If you dive into this before your really ready, it's likely that you'll end up with a brick and not know how to back out. The only solution is to search and read until you are comfortable with the entire process. Google tutorials on how to root gingerbread stock. It involves SBFing back to froyo, rooting with z4root, installing bootstrap, and flashing, but that is only the broadest of summaries. You really should understand the whole process BEFORE jumping in. That said, it's not really all that hard with a little research. Good luck!
i got my dx about a week ago. i am rooted running cm7 nightlies now. i came from the inc and ran new roms every week on that and kernels and new recoveries all the time. it took a day or so to understand how the dx works...
this is what i found
my dx came with 2.3 on it. i tried z4root and gingerbreak and neither worked. after reading alot i found sbf looked like the best route. I sbf'd back to 2.2 (Froyo) I then ran z4root and bang I had root. rebooted and i used dxgbrooted stock image. i downloaded both dx bootstrapper and d2 bootstrapper. d2 is for gb based roms, dx is for 2.2 based. i had a bunch of trouble with the bootstrappers and it was annoying. i continued to run the dxgbrooted rom and i hated it, it so freaking slow and crappy. i then flashed a nightly of cm7 and i bootlooped, so i had to sbf and root the thing again and reinstall cm7 nightly, i havent been happier since. these stock based roms and cool UI features motoblur and sense, they suck IMO and i like vanilla or cm7.
