Soft back key goes nuts! - Epic 4G General

from day one of owning my Epic 4g, my soft back key starts going nuts at random times, i will be at a website and all of a sudden my back button goes bonkers and it backs me out to the home screen, i have made sure that im not pressing it excessively, to rule out operator error. I was hopping that after rooting the device and flashing customs roms that this problem would go away. well it hasn't and its driving me insane! is there any one else having this problem, or am I the only one?

i have the exact opposite problem, my back& home key require substantially more force to activate the command than any other epic i've used...

Argh! The screen is no longer responsive. What to do?

Just as i said - Argh! The screen is no longer responsive. What to do? I can no longer slide the lock across the screen. i have tried to flash the ROM with the 1.66 official but i cannot because it tells me to unlock the phone. I cant! argh! I've pushed the little red button by the battery a couple of times as well as removed the battery. Any suggestions? The hard buttons allow me to answer a call but that's it. i recently turned on the lock for the phone (today in fact) but I've unlocked it several times since doing so before this happened.
Sounds familiar...
Sounds like it is the same problem I had, as well as a few others on this forum. Even after a hard reset, it still didn't work. According to other people here, the solution is to have the screen swopped out for a new one. I've actually just sent mine in today to get it sorted out.
Just curious - I've got a suspicion that environmental conditions may have a role to play in causing the failure. What is the weather in your area like?
Very nice here today. Sunny, mid 50s(f).
I bought this off of ebay. Do i just send it in to HTC?
Try a hard reset, and if it doesn't help then make sure you have an official ROM and send it to HTC.
a hard reset is the little red button next to the battery, correct? ive done that.
and i cant very well change the ROMs at this point now, can i?

I would really like to wipe it before i sent it in. i dont want all my info, etc going into someones hands i dont know. anyway to do that?
No, that's a soft reset. Hard reset is pressing the red button while holding both volume keys until you get the "Restore factory settings?" prompt (when the device is on), then following the onsceeen instructions. This is what you're looking for to erase everything, including any possible software bug that could have caused the issue.
If the touchscreen still doesn't work then, send it in.

No! A hard reset is:
- Turn phone off
- Press vol up and down at the same time and then press power button (hold vol)
- follow the instructions on the screen
Be aware, that all you data on the phone will get lost. I recommend taking out the SD for that as well. After that u r done. By what you say i assume, that you didnt flash a custom ROM yet, right ?
Thanks! that didnt work either though.
I just want my money back now honestly. This thing, as pretty as it is, is just too much trouble.
Sorry double post...
A faulty device can happen to anybody, just bad luck... can't count how many times it has happened to me as well in the past.
I heard that there is a batch of phones that have a faulty screen, other problems are that without pressing anything the phone still registers clicks, phone doesn't always detect the correct place of where you pressed and the screen not responding.
I have got this on my phone and have arranged a pick up from HTC to pick up my phone for repair, hopefully in a week or two it will come back with a brand new screen that works
Ive had it a couple of months now. Im not sure if i can deal with the lack of apps that my iPhone has, pandora and the like, and the fact that teh HD2 would every so often change time and even date and i cant get weather in places my iPhone can.
In short, i love the HD2 for its specs but i no longer trust it at all.

[Q] Screen problem..anyone have an idea what is going on?

Ok, I have been waiting for this phone for a while now (Sero plan, had to wait to Oct 1st)
Finally get it and it is acting up, not a good first impression.
Phone seems to "freeze". The screen just becomes unresponsive. Nothing is reflected as being done but I think the phone is still operating because when I took out the battery and restarted the phone, my txt draft was different from when the screen locked up (I was randomly pressing buttons on the keyboard after the screen locked)
The screen does not black out, it just freezes randomly. I can't press any buttons to do anything, I can only power off the screen and power it back on in which case it comes back to the frozen screen. My only option is to then take out the battery. Anyone have this occur to them? I don't like the idea of having to go to a store for a replacement 2 days after I received the phone..

Sorry I don't have a solution to your problem, but...
I'd do a factory reset before you take it back, back everything up, do the reset, and then restore it. A factory reset can work wonders for some odd problems.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8448259#post8448259
Easiest way to restore is to use Clockwork Recovery on a rooted phone. 1 option to back everything up, wipe all the caches in Clockwork, factory reset the phone, restore the backup in Clockwork. Shouldn't take more than 15 mins. See the developers forum on instructions on how to root and install Clockwork.
I agree your first step should be a backup/reset. If that doesn't fix the problem then swap it with a new one. I had serious freezing issues with my first Epic and eventually had to return it for a new one. Second one has run perfectly since.

Agreed. Freezing is a hardware defect. Backup. Wipe. Check it out.
i've noticed this freeze always occurs on my phone when my it's idle. It seems to only occur when I leave the GPS on and it appears to be searching causing it to freeze.

[Q] Is your optical track pad working???

okay, so my optical trackpad is no longer working, or is super NOT sensitive at all.
During messaging, when I type a sentence "hi, how's it going, I'm doing..." or something like that, I used to be able to use the optical trackpad to scroll to any letter but now, I cannot. Even when I can, it's after 50 swipes of the trackpad... WTF.
In the homescreen, when I swipe the optical trackpad left/right, it does nothing.
(I'm not rooted, everything is stock; learned not to root and setup the phone after my first mt4g exchange)
I'm hoping I dont have to exchange this one, but is there any setting or something I could do?
Oh, and the button on the optical trackpad works cause I still use the trackpad wake to unlock phone.
thanks in advance.
Factory reset. If that doesn't help - call T-mobile and have send you a new one. My trackpad works perfectly, much better then the one in G2.
I exchanged my wife's phone a couple days ago due to the exact symptoms you described. I factory reset the unit twice and the problem persisted. The track pad crapped out while we were still in our first 14 days from purchase (starting to question the unit build quality although it had the sony screen... Taiwan made). TMO customer support stated "there's not any troubleshooting we can do for this matter. We'll send you a new phone".
yeah, I feared NOT doing a factory reset but I guess I have to.
This is like my 5th factory reset in 3 phones.. HTC QC is really starting to f$ck1n piss me off.. WTF
I guess I will factory reset and if it doesn't work, I will exchange... yet again...
I'm getting the EXACT same problem, did the factory reset help? Did T-Mobile send you a new phone?
Thanks in advance for any info. I hate to reset my phone after finally setting it up to my liking...
You could try flashing a diff ROM
EDIT: ermm well that could work but I meant to type kernel

Looks like my girl had joined the club of broken optical pads on the mytouch. She blames me actually, saying me flashing ROMs on her phone did it. Is that possible? It works to select items
If you press really hard but u can't swipe with it. I found out the pressing really hard works to select while in recovery trying a differ ROM well that didn't work it still takes a hard press to work. Went from darkside sence to darksode MIUI. I can see the red light in the trackpad it stays on with the screen and goes off with the screen. Not sure what to do with it shes stuck with the phone for at lease 1 more year when our contract is up.

Nice job searching! A year old thread haha, and probably her fault... I bet she dropped it because unless it started happening when you flashed a ROM then it's probably hardware crappin out.

Return button not working/off

I just got my phone back from Samsung and they replaced the board due to bad internal SD....now..this new phone is working great....BUT
The return button (right of main physical button) turns off and doesnt want to work.
It seems like it gets stuck as pressing the main home button will take a screen shot.
Is this a known issue?
It stops working...then a few min. later it works again for a bit. Rebooting doesnt help it. You just have to wait it out.
Any way to calibrate it?
Send it back to samsung?
My currently dead i9000M did this. Usually only when you pressed Home and Return really quickly.

Really? WTF!
I thought it was just my phone...and this phone just came back from repair!
I just called samsung and told them about the issue. They told me to call the repair shop in Montreal tomorrow and tell them about it as they need to close off my old ticket so a new ticket can be reopened.
WTF..they dont do extensive testing of the phone before shipping it out to customers!
I get the same as well. When running the authorized Bell/Samsung ROM's (JK3, JK4 and JL4) I see it quite often.
Now that I am using a custom ROM based on JPY, it occurs less frequently. I can't seem to duplicate the steps it takes for the issue to arise.
As @rmanaudio mentioned, once this occurs and you press the "Home" button, a screenshot is taken.
I'd be interested to know if the new device that you receive has this issue fixed.
is this the problem that occurs for you in this thread?

Ok, goto your dialer and type the following:
*#*#2663#*#*
Then click Touch key FW update.
Let me know if this fixes the issue for you too,
I had the same issue and after doing this I haven't seen the problem in a number of days.
This may or may not work, I have found this menu on my own and don't know if it will solve anything

Touch screen not working?

My phone has been running perfectly since ive had it. Rooted and running Gingerbread shift deck 1.2.1 smoothly. Everything was fine, until today, my phone randomly shut it self off. It happens, so i just went to turn it back on, but it wouldnt turn back on. pulled battery, then it booted back up. Went to go put in my pattern unlock and it wouldnt respond to my touch so i slid it open and got it to work that way. With the keyboard out the touchscreen worked fine and i could navigate my phone with that and the keyboard, even though the lights on the keyboard wouldnt light up and the home menu back search lights wouldnt light up either, they still vibrated and worked fine. So i tried another quick reboot, same thing, i tried uninstalling the most recent app i installed which was LBE Security Service, didnt work, tried clearing the cache and the same thing, flashed a recovery, nothing, factory reset, nothing, flashed same recovery, nothing, tried booting up without the SD Card since that sometimes fixed some problems, but same thing. Now the touchscreen wont respond whether the keyboard is open or closed, and the keyboard lights arent lighting up, but the phone seems to be running just fine, i just cant get in since the touch screen wont respond lol..
any ideas on what went wrong? or what i could do to fix it? I tried to get into the IRC but it kept telling me the captcha was wrong even though it wasnt.
try restoring a backup?
Tried that, still nothing.
Happened to me soon touch screen will die, ruu and get a returns from Sprint for 30$

Damn for real? That sucks. Alright thanks
I would RUU back to factory original. Then run it that way for a bit, see if the issue persits. If it does then take the phone back for an exchange. If not then Root again, and try a different Rom.
alright ill do that. i cant get HTC Sync to detect my phone and im assuming its because my phone is set to disk drive and not HTC Sync. What should i do?
Nevermind, i got it. RUUed back to factory and the screen still doesnt work, taking it to sprint tomorrow morning.
Well glad you got it . Sorry it didn't fix it .

If you already RUU'd , and still have the issue take it in to Sprint.
I was having the exact same issue with my Shift, it started last week. Was running MikShifted-G 2.1, went back to stock, same issue -- phone only responds when the keyboard is slid about 1/4 of the way out.
I brought it to my local corporate Sprint store, they checked it out, and said it was a known issue; a ribbon cable and LCD need to be replaced. The tech said that Sprint has been getting inundated with this exact problem recently, and the parts are on backorder. Apparently the ribbon cable wears out over time, and everyone's are crapping out at the same time.
They hoped the parts would be at the store in about a week, my fingers are crossed.. I have ESRP so the fix will be free even though my phone is over a year old. The tech said the actual repair only takes a few minutes as long as they have the parts.
I went by Sprint yesterday and they ordered me a new (refurb I'm sure) Shift.
The screen also started back working after 36 hours
