Hi guys,
This evening something wring happened with my HD2. Suddenly without any visible reasons touch screen stopped working. Actualy screen itself is working but it doesn't react on any touches. I did hard reset - no luck, screen is working but touch surface isn't, so basically my phone is almost dead :-(
Have you seen this behaviour ? Is there any possible way to fix it ? The only thing that comes in my mind which could cause something like this is static electricity shock, but if it kills HD2 screen I want my money back.
I guess now I should use warranty and this is just after 1 month of usage....
Just a stupd question
Don't be offended by my question, I just want to rule out the obvious.
You're not wearing gloves due to the cold outside?
Greetings
chuelibrueder
No, I'm not using gloves with HD2 :-(
I have the same problem. I believe that the connectors under the screen became loose.
I have send an email to htc and they told me to contact the retailer to check if they can replace the device and if not to contact the service center in Cyprus.
There is another thread about this issue here
i`m sure that warranty will solve it.. just contact your retailer.. good luck
Hmmm,
Yet another one having to go back due to hardware problems....
WB
I loose the touch screen today and the hardware button exept Home i think, i had to remove the battery and i waited 30s put it back and everything went in place, the phone had called one contact when i had the bug.
The only thing that happened before screen doesn't work and buttons : i received an MMS strange, i'm not sure i can rely on my phone
I only installed the 1.48 rom and the 3 patches (audio, sms and sd card)

I contacted the service center in Cyprus and they offered to repair it but they don't have spare parts right now. I've also send an email to the retailer and wait for their answer.
Seems i have to wait after Christmas for a repair or exchange.
The good thing is that by pressing the screen with my palm or giving it a few solid taps it works for some time.
bBeware keyboard layout!
I had suffer bye used hadwritting layout sometime it cause screen doesn't responds
try change keyboard layout not hadwritting
Just had the same thing happen with mine, powers up but the screen wont respond anywhere i press. I have tried hard reset AND soft reset, nothing!
Have just restored factory ROM, and deleted hspdl and dropped off at vodaphone in town. Im gutted!!
really seems to be a production problem: i had to send my hd2 back to htc for screen replacement just 4 weeks ago... same fault as yours: the touchscreen wasn't responding to input anymore!
the last weeks i noticed that many people had this problem too...
wow.. keeping a close eye on this.. guess the same problem from the HD is creeping up to the HD2..
Well im hoping vodaphone dont turn around and say its not covered under warranty etc, I had to [like most ppl] sign up for two years to get this phone, i aint gonna be to happy if i have to spend the next 21 months of my contract without the handset i wanted!
Yikes , yesterday my screen didn't respond either (for the first time). Soft reset didn't work. After taking the battery out and leave it out for > minute it still didn't respond. I pressed the screen a little and then it worked again. Not sure if it was because of pressing the screen, but it did look that way. I hope this will be the last time this happens!
tnx!

Well, it's been a few weeks now and I've had this problem several times again and worse, even after a hard reset; and almost each time I could fix it by pressing the screen/hardware buttons, but that shouldn't be the way, because I don't think it's good for the hardware, so I searched the forum and I think I found the two culprits (maybe a combination of the two):
1. The problem occured exactly the same day I began using my 16 GB card, class 2. It once happened that when I had the locked screen problem I took out the card and it immediately unlocked. But every now and then the phone still froze, even when I took out the SD card if the problem occured.
2. Then I have put off the automatic light adjustment settings and guess what; no more freezes!
It looks like a combination of power settings and use of SD card. I'm not very technical, but even when it looked like it was a hardware fault at first, it now seems it's a software fault after all.
Touchscreen doesnt work
Well F4CK my screen will not respond to touch at all anymore seems that this is a problem that is not well addressed tmobile is sending out a new one but the question is when will the touchscreen stop working on that "new" one.NOT happy at all.
Well this has now happened to me....no touch response but hardware buttons working, screen still displays-- off to JB HIFI as soon as I can to replace.
OOOKK I had this problem when i just flashed my phone with a costum rom. As far i remember my phone fall down once or twice but not something bad. I have the silicone cover and screen protector. If it was a hardware problem i believe that it shouldn't work at all even if you had to use the hardbuttons. Which that was how i would have to use to unlock the screen. I will go back to the factory rom and settings to see if there is any difference. My current rom is AthineOS 3.14 and Radio 2.15.50.14.
If for any reason you want to access your cellphone and you don't have time go through troubleshooting. I Suggest you download mymobiler which connects the phone and you can use it through your pc. Make sure you take the sd card before you connect. Here is the website www.mymobiler.com
In my case, my phone was RIP. The touch screen stopped working after installing a custom ROM. I installed the latest official ROM from T-Mobile and my phone and came back to life
Just as i said - Argh! The screen is no longer responsive. What to do? I can no longer slide the lock across the screen. i have tried to flash the ROM with the 1.66 official but i cannot because it tells me to unlock the phone. I cant! argh! I've pushed the little red button by the battery a couple of times as well as removed the battery. Any suggestions? The hard buttons allow me to answer a call but that's it. i recently turned on the lock for the phone (today in fact) but I've unlocked it several times since doing so before this happened.
Sounds familiar...
Sounds like it is the same problem I had, as well as a few others on this forum. Even after a hard reset, it still didn't work. According to other people here, the solution is to have the screen swopped out for a new one. I've actually just sent mine in today to get it sorted out.
Just curious - I've got a suspicion that environmental conditions may have a role to play in causing the failure. What is the weather in your area like?
Very nice here today. Sunny, mid 50s(f).
I bought this off of ebay. Do i just send it in to HTC?
Try a hard reset, and if it doesn't help then make sure you have an official ROM and send it to HTC.
a hard reset is the little red button next to the battery, correct? ive done that.
and i cant very well change the ROMs at this point now, can i?

I would really like to wipe it before i sent it in. i dont want all my info, etc going into someones hands i dont know. anyway to do that?
No, that's a soft reset. Hard reset is pressing the red button while holding both volume keys until you get the "Restore factory settings?" prompt (when the device is on), then following the onsceeen instructions. This is what you're looking for to erase everything, including any possible software bug that could have caused the issue.
If the touchscreen still doesn't work then, send it in.

No! A hard reset is:
- Turn phone off
- Press vol up and down at the same time and then press power button (hold vol)
- follow the instructions on the screen
Be aware, that all you data on the phone will get lost. I recommend taking out the SD for that as well. After that u r done. By what you say i assume, that you didnt flash a custom ROM yet, right ?
Thanks! that didnt work either though.
I just want my money back now honestly. This thing, as pretty as it is, is just too much trouble.
Sorry double post...
A faulty device can happen to anybody, just bad luck... can't count how many times it has happened to me as well in the past.
I heard that there is a batch of phones that have a faulty screen, other problems are that without pressing anything the phone still registers clicks, phone doesn't always detect the correct place of where you pressed and the screen not responding.
I have got this on my phone and have arranged a pick up from HTC to pick up my phone for repair, hopefully in a week or two it will come back with a brand new screen that works
Ive had it a couple of months now. Im not sure if i can deal with the lack of apps that my iPhone has, pandora and the like, and the fact that teh HD2 would every so often change time and even date and i cant get weather in places my iPhone can.
In short, i love the HD2 for its specs but i no longer trust it at all.
Hey my lovely XDA-ers, I'm really hoping for some magic here...
Yesterday my HD2 digitizer just stopped working... the Touchscreen will not respond to any inputs. It was bitterly cold outside so I was half hoping that an overnight stay in a warm room would help, but no avail...
The thing is, on one in every 5 restarts, I get a small amount of life from it. One one in 15 restarts, I get full use. So there's still life in there.
I could understand if it broke because I dropped the phone/squashed it, but at the time I was just playing Robo Defence, completely normal use, when all of a sudden it stopped responding.
I've uploaded a video, which shows how, occasionally, the bottom fifth of the screen works. However, as shown, when I'm using the top half of the screen, the digitizer appears to be receiving input from the bottom of the screen, as though I'm trying to perform a multi-touch action. For this reason I'm hoping there still be some way to rescue the phone without an expensive repair job. I bought it in March from XDA Marketplace, and it's served me faithfully since, but because of that I do not think I have the manufacturer's guarentee, or insurance
I've hard-reset, I've reflashed my ROM, I've tried in both WM and Android (my usual OS at the moment), I've reflashed over WM ROMs, and the problem stays the same... (also read all related threads!)
Sorry for inverted nature of vid!
So does anyone have any suggestions to try? Otherwise I might go through a £130 repair service on htcrepairs.co.uk - they do not show up on a forum search so I was wondering if anyone had used their service before?
Thanks all, appreciate any ideas.
Edd
Very odd indeed. I don't have a solution for your problem, but a suggestion. It is a long shot, but might help.
Whenever i had similar problems with my Wizard (i know, kind of old but one of the best older devices every made by HTC), i opened it and cleaned it from the inside and checked all the connections of keyboard, touchscreen, etc. to the mainboard. Sometimes it helped...
In the end, if you buy the replacement kit, you anyway have to open the HD2, so why not try this in prior to buying the kit...
A lot of people seem to have this problem. There's a lot of information on it here. Do a search. But the short answer is its a hardware problem. If your phone is still under warranty send it back. I think HTC will fix it for free if It's less than a year old. But try your carrier first.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
BAD NEWS...
i had EXACTLY this happen to me. eventually it totally stopped responding. Only option is to replace the digitizer.
GOOD NEWS..
After a month of searching, I found a really good guy to do it. www.iexpertstudio.com . The owner is VINCE. you can email him on his site. He charged $110 including mailing it back to me. He replaced the LCD and digitizer and sent it back. All works perfectly now.
I see you are in the UK so dont know if it makes sense to send it to the US. Alternative is to go on ebay and buy the screen/digitizer and replace it yourself.
(BTW normally i would have chucked the device, but even after 1 year I still dont think there is as versatile a device as the HD2. Had the DHD been 3G useable in the US I would have bought one.)
Thanks for the feedback guys, I've been doing some investigation my end (and you're right, there are similar threads on here, but none which had a "half-screen working" problem.)
I've narrowed the culprit down to my "Back" button. It's somehow exerting pressure on the screen, leading to either a non-responsive digitizer or an input at the bottom of the screen.
I might add this to an entry in the "ANDROID KILLS YOUR BUTTONS" thread
My choice is to live manually with it, or get the company mentioned in the first post to give it a good clean, but whether it's worth £80 just yet is a question for me.
Anyway, thanks for your input, guess this thread will close, but to any readers in future, if your screen seems to die, see if it's pressure on the screen caused by the buttons!
I can totally support your reasoning.
I haven't had any problems whatsoever with the touchscreen in almost a year of honoured career of this phone, while this morning I was trying to unlock it with no success (nothing special happened, I even used it 10 minutes this morning already). At first I thought it was the usual "sleepy" behaviour of the screen right after waking up, butafter sliding down the hdmini style unlocker at least 10 times with no effect I really started freaking out :O
I have longpress endkey set on instant reboot, and after that it seemed working... just not for too long.
To cut to the chase, what in my opinion supports your idea of hardware buttons interfering is:
sometimes, as I have LMT installed, with the tap&hold option enabled, swiping with just one finger triggered double swype instead (as if the screen detected a second, firm press on the screen elsewhere even if I sure as heck was swyping with one finger)
using mymobiler didn't work as well; if it was a hardware touchscreen problem, mymobiler should work, as it simulates touches, so it will just do its job even if the touchscreen is totally dead... while, IF the hardware touchscreen detected a firm press somewhere, mymobiler wasn't able to actively simulate another press
repeatedly pressing on the end key (which seems to be the culprit in my case) apparently solves the problem, as I can use the touchscreen again; also, a prolonged cycle of hibernating with end key, waking with end key, swyping down the hdmini lock (repeat at libitum) seemed to work, as if I dislodged something by activating the button so often
What I don't understand anyway is: HOW can a button pressing on the digitizer be exerting a touch action? If this was a resistive screen, I'd understand, but it's capacitive, and not even capacitive pens are so good as fingers in activating the touch. The buttons are just plastic with a metal contact underneath, and this metal contact shoudl by no means be anywhere near the digitizer.
Bah.
I know I have 2 years warranty on this device, but being far from my phone during the warranty processing gives me the creeps, so I'll just go on using it and pray this to be the defaillance of one sunday morning not to be seen again... after several soft resets (and fantasizing about a new rom flash, which I need anyway for other reasons) the problem seems to have settled by delicately bashing on the end key. The unlock slider is responsive after every wake up now... FOR now.
Praying...
My screen also died. So the only thing I have to do is press on the end key for a couple of times to make it work again?
lol, that's ONE possibility.
Just saying, in my case it worked, and still does since it happened once more this evening, so it's definitely got something to do with the hardware keys messing around (and hopefully dislodging themself for good, or I'll have to send it back for servicing), anyway in your case it could also be a dead digitizer, so no go
let's put all this about touch screen in 1 sticky thread pls.
I've been living for the problem for about three weeks now. It's never got worse, but never got better. It's a livable situation so for the moment I'll deal with it. I might check with HT about warranty, but it's not yet bothersom enough to make me want to flash back to stock, send it off etc. etc.

Actually, I don't like having paid good money for a defective phone, but being without HD2 for up to a couple of weeks to one month (maybe? have no idea how fast HTC servicing is) is troublesome. I may buy for a deal a blue angel as a spare, yet, no GPS...
The most problematic event is if you get the "stuck" screen during a call.
In my case, it's the end key that messes it up; if the screen's dead, pressing twice the end key, firmly enough (once for screen off, then again for screen back on) wakes up the screen, and apparently, during a ringing incoming call, you can press the hardware end key without rejecting it, so it's a viable option (not taking into consideration the fact that trying to wake up the screen takes time, and the caller may give up after a while if you're not fast enough).
But if for any reason the screen gets stuck while the call is connected, I am stuck too, as to wake it up I should press the end key thus hanging on the other party.
Sad story.
EDIT: forget what I wrote, pressing end key while phone is ringing WILL reject the call. I tried it before during a real incoming call and apparently it didn't do it, but now it just did.
I also have a HD with a dead screen....
Only thing here is I have sent it back twice already to TelSuck here in Australia only to have it returned after the tech has wiped it over and reflashed it for me... What helpful little imps they are!
Code:
http://www.youtube.com/v/T6ssqmpRIB0
Its drivin me nuts sending it away for 3 weeks at a time to have someone with just enough grey matter to be able to wield a screwdriver tell me nothing is wrong.
Happy to try any suggestions!
@insinr8
this thread is just for half-dead screens where the screen sometimes actually works. Unless you can resurrect it by firmly pressing on the hardware keys, but if it's dead on a regular basis, then it's not our same problem I'm afraid :-(
@OP
while having an "attack", did you try plugging out the microsd to see if it magically solved the problem?
I mean, if it did, it would still be a hardware problem related to the microsd slot, since there is no point for a faulty microsd to mess up the touchscreen, and let it work from time to time

I will try that - it seems to happen more frequently when plugged in and charging, and now more buttons seem to be the cause/fix (e.g. now the home-button, or when I am on home-screens the phone will swipe "left", whereas before it would swipe "right". I'll keep playing.
I may check out HTC as I reckon my warranty, if I have one, will run out soon... Will still wait til after Xmas as I need my toy for the boring bits of Xmas!
I'm having same trouble now whit my phone except problems started mouth ago. After some period I again power up my phone and suddenly everything worked perfectly. Unfortunately this last only for two days and then exactly same problems happened, partially function screen.
As far as I know only good solution is replacing digitizer... I already ordered one for me.
exactly the same problem for me.. I sent it back with warranty yesterday

Ditto.
Actually, my warranty lasts two years, which means until 2012, anyway I cannot stand risking to lose calls because the screen dies on me in the wrong moment, and the only way to wake it up is pressing the endkey (which by the way is the only "cure", and apparently never the cause).
I will be uploading a video on youtube regarding this, also to show it to the guys at the HTC support who will be asking me to hard reset and reflash until annoyed to death (as if that will solve anything)
Bump
This is the video that I just uploaded to youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3-PNYwpYeI
EDIT: One day after, the problem has become way more frequent, 1 out of three times I wake up the phone, diugitizer is dead and I need the " on the end key to make it work
Uploaded another video on youtube with problem showing on vanilla lockscreen so HTC support doesn't try and tell me it's CHT lockscreen's fault
Last bump.
Screen has ben promoted from "hardware key problem" to "permanent death".
Now I can use the phone with mymobiler, but I can't anymore with touch, I seem to not be able even to wake it up even by pressing on end key
Re-flashing last official rom upgrade now to see if anything changes... yeah, sure
Ouch - good luck, hope mine doesn't go that way...
I have been using Ultimate Droid 3.2.5 for a couple of months now and a few days ago i pick up my phone to make a call and the screen doesn't respond when I touch the screen. Only the bottom buttons and volume buttons work. At first, if i I play with the buttons at the bottom i can usually get the touch screen to repond. I tried to wipe data/dactory reset and reinstall rom but now I cant even get it to work like before. Only thing I can do now is answer calls and call back the last person that called me. Has anyone else had this problem?PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks!
Did you eventually find out what cause this issues?
I think my phone is behaving similar, I'm using different Android ROMS for quite a while now, and suddenly without any apparent reason the touchscreen isn't responding very often after waking up the screen. It won't happen if the screen is on and the touch screen is working, only after a wakeup..
Sometimes it's just impossible to get it working again, and I'm forced to wait a while until it decides to respond again. It kinda feels like the phone is forgetting to wake or initialize the touchscreen properly.
ROM and Kernel changes didn't solve this so far.
I think the issues originally started with Typhoons CM7 NIGHTLY 3.7.1 / tytung 12.4v3 for me.
Actually I never found out what the problem was. I just flashed it back to stock and had T-Mobile send me another one. That was in May and actually a few days ago it happened to my phone again. So this time they sent me an HD7. It really sicks that they dont have that phone anymore. Cant do sh*t with this HD7!
Same here the Power Button is the problem, you just have to train yourself not to use it. I use Button Savior and Button Remapper. On my second HD2, luckily T-Mobile sent me a HD2, but that was in like March, right before my one year was up.
Make sure you keep this one working cuz there will be no more HD2! I may find one on Craigslist or something. This HD7 and Windows 7.5 really sucks monkey nuts!!!

Yea I played around with WP7 on the HD2 when it first became avaliable and wasn't really worth the time and trouble it took to get it on there. One month later I went back to NAND and haven't looked back.
Same here! Registering Zune was a problem at first.
Thanks for your quick response! Yeah, seems to be a problem with the end button / flex connector of digitizer
I found another helpful thread about this issue: The Infamous Unresponsive Digitizier Screen Possibly Solved!
Obviously you need to replace the digitizer to fix this problem.
I'm sticking to the solution of not touching the button at all, there are apps to turn off the screen and shutdown the phone. At least waking with any other buttons works most of the time for now, but it's not really a long-term solution.
Wish I would have saw that thread b4 i sent my phone back!!!
I was running an older Paramid version of dunphp's ROM, and right before swtching the ROM my touch screen start to not function. I could not pull the ring up to unlock the screen. I rebooted multiple times. Cleared Dalvik and fixed permissions. It finally worked after attemptiing to unlock it for what seem like abother 500 times.
I was going to change over to his latest Deisre HD ROM anyway. So I did a Task 29, and cleaned and reinstalled everything from scratch. It worked perfectly for about 5 days. Now I am getting the same issue with my touch screen. It just seems to go out. Is this typically what happens when it's about to die?
Never mind. I Task29, and flashed a Windows Mobile ROM just to see, and yeah...it's dead...

You have semi-dead digitizer. But it is nothing you can't temporarily fix every time it happens. Just push red (end call) button really hard for a while and it will get fixed for a while. I recommend you using button savior and lock screen with it and unlock with any other button than red one, it should be permanently fixed then. Please hit the thanks button if I helped you.

I hit the thanks button as you gave me hope. I am currently using my old TouchPro 2 with an old NRG Titanium Rom on it for the time being, but will try this today. I’ll install “button savior”, but what am I supposed to do with the app? What settings do I run? I think you are totally right about this, as I noticed when I was unlocking my phone, using the green call button worked most often, but now that’s not even working.

Yes, I have exactly the same problem as you have. My phone was working flawlessly for like a year and a half, but last week all of a sudden the touchscreen sometimes didn't work and sometimes it did. So I tried literally everything, I was fixing my permisions all the time, wiping dalvik, task29, remaking parrtitions, even bought a new sd card. But few days ago I found a solution, by pushing red button really hard (because the digitizer is right behind it) and not using it after. The Button Savior app is a simple app that makes a very little transparent icon on your screen and when you tap it, the menu of buttons will come up (with the same buttons as your hard buttons on your device) so every time you will want to lock the device you will do it on your screen, and won't have to push the hard button and come through all the hassle of pushing the digitizer. I really hope I helped you, as this very same problem was driving my crazy for the past few days.

How long do you hold the red button? Also, I am pushing down really hard. I didn't know you could get the digitizer replaced...I wonder who would do that (no way would I send it to HTC and wait a month), and how much that costs...?
HTC sends phones back crazy quick. Atleast that's how it was for me. They actually sent it back the day they got it from what I remember. It did take a while though for the phone to arrive to HTC (this depend who and from where you send it though) If your phone still has warranty I seriously recommended you send it yo HTC. Just remember to flash it 100% stock before sending it.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App
Well believe it or not, after pressing the Red phone off button for an eternity and applying a ton of pressure, it's working. I am sure it won't be for long. I have a shortcut to lock the phone on the screen. So basically your saying I should stay away from hitting the Red phone off button, or else that will kill it again? What about the other hard buttons?
I am in the UAE at present, so it might be better for me to just order a digitizer and do the repair myself. I see there are a lot of YouTube videos on the subject.
Thanks everyone for your help!
