[Q] Android camcorder 720p - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I have seen some discussions about this in other threads but as usual someone half answers a question and then a group of idiots argue about something pointless for a few pages and then the thread gets forgotten about.
Lets hope this one doesn't go the same way.
Where are we with 720p on android? - note I am not interested in whether you think it is necessary or how it compares to an SLR, other Phone or your kitchen sink, I am just interested to know whether anyone has got it working in 720p, how it is working and whether it is any good.

It's internal to the kernel, from what I understand, and they have to find the drivers. I believe the camera is capable. However writing that to the SD card as ur running Android off it might be a problem. That being said I seen the devs discussing it the other day on irc. Seems as though its low in the priority list after nand release. Maybe in the future maybe not..

That sums it up. It will probably come one day, but right now the devs have bigger fish to fry.

I really would like 720p even tho the lens is total crap. But hey . give the devs some time to finish the NAND release. After that they might look into 720p recording At least.. i hope

Darkstone is actually trying to work on this, just needs hd/z kernel source for the drivers. He was talking about it about an hour ago on irc with markinus.

I think 720P video recording would be the cats ass so to speak. Ive seen some sample video taken by an X10 on youtube with the 2.1 update that includes the HD recording (not yet released yet = lame). It was a hell of a lot better than the current video recording i can take with the phone. Whether or not it happens on the HD2 is up to the dev community that supports the device. Just wait a couple of years and phones are going to be f'ing amazing!
Sent from my X10a using XDAt App

cool, nice to know people are still working on it. Thanks
This is the kind of thing we should expect once it is working, if you ignore the wobbles the quality is very good in decent light.

Andriod for HD2 Almost there! (engadget)

I thought it would be good to post the link for people to see some progress on andriod. Apparently, the chefs that have been working with harret have just made a break through, alot quicker than expected, which means we can expect andriod soon!

Theres still a long way to go.
I hate to put a downer on things but I think those of you who want this will still be waiting quite a while. Certainly is a fantastic breakthrough though.

I can't speak for performance (my brother's MyTouch seems snappy), but it definitely has better apps. And it's, you know, not a soon to be dead operating system.
You could've just linked directly to the thread here on XDA and cut out the middle-man (Engadget). Unless you're excited that XDA Devs made it on Engadget...which is the awesome part.

You do realize that that article is about the linux project thread that is here on this site, right? If you watched it on this site you would have known this news a day earlier. The thread is stickied in the rom section.
Also, I wouldn't say that this breakthru was made quicker than expected... it was some segfault problems they solved that they didn't expect to have in the first place. It put the whole project on hold for a while, but now they're back in business, but things are not gonna happen any quicker than expected. It will still be a long time before we have a fully-functional port.
they still havea long way to go. it just took engadget long enough to realize that the devs have been working on this for quite a while. i don't think any of the drivers for bluetooth, wi fi, touch screen calibration, etc etc are even close to being finished yet.

HTC Desire getting 720p Video What about our Nexus Ones?

The desire is getting 720p video recording officially through its froyo update. Since the hardware is the same between the nexus and desire could we possibly get the same quality of video on our nexus one. IS there any chance that we will get a update that enables 720p video?
They currently have 720p recording in the Development section, but only if you root your phone (so I too hope we somehow can get 720p recording without voiding the warranty).
I'm hoping someone can pull out the iTunes Sync that HTC is throwing in there as well, as DoubleTwist just doesn't cut it for me.
Last but not least, I still hope for the FM radio. Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Yes, I don't like being limited to what I can do.
Wow, first page of the development section man.

I was thinking about on the bus, I SEVERELY doubt our XDA mod, and HTC's will be identical, so we can still take progress from HTC's and make XDA's even better, 25FPS maybe?

Seriously though, It's up to Google to do the appropriate software updates for us. However, since they've taken the stance of having "pure vanilla AOSP" we won't see extra features not in aosp. AOSP has no support for 720p.

Bingo.
Selling phones isn't Google's business. N1 wasn't supposed to build Google a line of customers that might buy N2/3/10, because there was no intent to make business selling phones. So Google doesn't care about customers that bought N1, since they're a minority compared to other Android phone users, and since they won't be returning customers anyway - nothing to return to.
Whom does it care about? Developers, those that were originally the target crowd for this device, and still are. Thus Google releases the latest operating system for those that hold this device, allowing them access to the latest OS first. But all the rest - things that are necessary for good phone operation and that can be applied as OS-wide fixes to other phones are taken care of, things that are enhancing user experience for this device only - are skipped. Like FM radio, like new graphic driver, like many other things. Because spending time on them is only going to please the Nexus crowd and won't contribute to the overall Android OS advancement - so they probably don't consider it important enough.
Am I happy about it? Of course not, I'd like them to make my Nexus do much more. Do I understand their business decision reasons and think their direction is the right thing for them? Absolutely.
You'd have to root your phone and applied the mod yourself. I don't think we'll ever see it from Google themselves.
720p video for n1 had been available for months. 2.1 roms and 2.2 both have it. The answer to his question is yes, but you'll need to flash a non stock rom
Thanks for all the answers. When the desire gets 720p video could we port its video drivers(not sure how to say it) for the camera to the nexus one? So the n1 would be useing the same software as the desire.

Gingerbread and MT4G

MT4G is on its way, but I'm still hanging on to N1 - great phone with huge development support.
Hardware-wise MT4G is a superior phone to N1, but apart from that I'll be missing a lot from the development community. When will we see gingerbread, or soon to be unveiled honeycomb (Mar 2011?)... There is just so little going on with MT4G on the development side, I wonder why...

This thread belongs in the general section.

I can't wait for some love like the n1. I miss mine solely for the multiple choices of roms. Can't wait for something running 2.3 and putting the mt4g at its full potential. I'll be so happy.
we have 4 different roms (counting both DHD roms as 1) MIUI, CM, Iced, DHD and the phone hasn't been out that long, I think we are fine development wise. At least for now

I think I may actually take it easy on you so listen up. The phone has been out for what, maybe a month? The N1, well, Feb-Dec means 11 months. Yes, the N1 has a TON of development but it did not when it first dropped (I ordered one on release day). The N1 actually took a couple of months for true development. Hell, it was at least 4 months before we could even wake the stupid thing with the trackball. Anyways, just letting you know, development takes time. It's not like the developers have tons of money to waste on EVERY phone that comes out and tons of time to develop for them.
P.S. I still have my N1 that I mess with every day!
You're crazy if you think that development for this phone is "slow". It's been out less than 60 days and already has several viable roms. Honestly, take a chill pill and have some patience.
On the other hand, I know what it's like to be impatient I've been checking the forums compulsively to look for signs of gingerbread roms on the horizon. CM7 is shaping up quite nicely. They have everything worked out except that when you're recording a video it chops off the last few seconds. CANNOT WAIT!!!
In conclusion, Merry Christmas, and stick around the MT4G is a fantastic phone and has some super devs behind it.
I see no sense in these threads.
With eViL, Zink , grankin01, Gr8gorilla, teamsilence...think thats most of them, for the MT4G to be where its at in such a short time I say hats off to em.
Lets be like some of the other forums on XDA where they turn into demanding little pricks that act utterly ungrateful...or be thankful for what we get and shut it..
I think the development is moving at an awesome pace and will only get better over time. Hopefully some Devs got a MT4G today

Can't wait for enom.
I'm waiting for Enom as well. I typically donate to him, so I'm leaving my phone stock until he's ready with a stable Gingerbread ROM.
.... It takes developers haveing a phone to be able to work on roms.... They cant just POOF, heres your rom.
And since the devs just got these phones in the last 2 weeks, and we already have 4 fully functioning roms.... Id say have some damn patience.
Agreed, we have seen a lot of progress given the short time the phones been out. But I don't think there needs to be repeated posts saying "have some damn patience." OP probably got the message the first time. If you're not adding to the conversation its probably better to give your typing fingers a rest. Otherwise you're just contributing to the cancerous ignorance that turns us against each other.

Switch from HTC TMobile Hd2 to a verizon HTC ThunderBolt. My experience with my hd2

Typing on my ThunderBolt right now. But I want to pay homage to the beastly hd2. Thanks hd2 and the devs of course for allowing me to run all those damn oses very smoothly. My HTC hd2 still have newer stuff like sense 2.1 and gingerbread while my ThunderBolt does not. Am still keeping my HTC hd2 as a software test device but am using my ThunderBolt more because no matter how many devs work on it, i felt like there was always some lags and oh my gosh reboots because once i would put a sense rom on it, it would run great for awhile until after a few days all hell broke loose. Its still not as fast as my thunderbolt everything is much more cleaner and faster with ThunderBolt..(I know its a brand new phone). But compare to my evo their both the same speed wise if not faster than evo. that's why I sold my evo and kept my hd2 and my hd2 had updated sense. But now with my ThunderBolt at hand I feel like I've finally find a device I can use to put my hd2 to rest. But thanks to devs and the community in the hd2 thread its because of the hd2 that I now got the ThunderBolt because I was used to sense from my hd2. Thanks guys

Dude hats of to you for such a respectful post. It is good to see some one pay homage to the HTC HD2 as it is still, and will be for a long time, the king of the hill when it comes to smartphone devices in my opinion. It is also good to see some one give the proper thanks deserved of the devs that have made the HD2 legendary.
I was wondering though if you could give eeveryone here including me you honest thoughts and opinion on the Thunderbolt. Hint this may possible be my next device.
You mean to tell me a native android phone with the latest specs is somehow superior than an HD2 that wasn't made with android in mind?!
Enjoy your TB, OP. It's a great phone from the short amount of time that I've got to play with it.

Thunderbolt is great phone but battery could be better. slcd is amazing dude very vibrant color. Wow also the second generation snapdragon is a beast you won't wait for anything to load everything from switching apps to watching movies its truly amazing no matter how many apps I open not a hiccup from the phone, also front facing camera is a plus thought it was a gimmick until i started video chatting a lot. Also one thing I think is weird is that htcsense.com is not included that's means not HTC hub, location, etc. Don't know what HTC did to the 8 mp camera but damn everything is so clear and let's say I try to take a fuzzy picture with the rear camera before the camera takes the pic it does something to make the pic come out the best quality possible. You won't be disappointed here. Damn almost forgot 4g faster than my broadband home connection it helps the thunderbolt feels so freaking fast because apps just downloads instantaneously, apps sync instantaneously but its at a price battery 4g will rape your battery so quick but don't listen to the rep that say you can't turn off 4g simple app in the market to keep it on 3g. Build quality what can I say its the best possible its the reason why we buy HTC products. But overall its great fast device. Once you get use to 4g you won't go back. Besides htcsense.com not included don't know why and battery drain quick you won't regret it.

Am not saying that in my opinion if I could update the specs in the hd2 that would be my phone forever. Not comes close to what the hd2 as done and is still doing. Am just saying it was time for me to try something new and that thanks to the dev and the hd2 I was able to pick the best device in the market now. I will never part from my hd2, will sell it. The hd2 runs Android close to or better than newer devices. I compare my HTC hd2 which come out year before my EVO and I was already running sense 2.1 and was running faster than my EVO that come out yrs after. I got to try that failed OS they called Windows phone 7 instead of spending 600+ on a phone that I was gonna regret hd2 saved me from that. The only that bugs is to think that if Microsoft was on top of their game they would dominate the phone market nobody could to these guys windows mobile was good to me but damn its sucks a time performance wise. They come out with a feature less OS 50yrs later like everybody would go crazy about it. To little to late Microsoft.

[Q] Porting Sense

Hey all,
I'm considering trying to go hard in the paint and make a port of sense from the HTC Droid DNA (Butterfly) to the Nexus 4. However, I'm not entirely sure it's possible. I believe the chipset is a match I'm just concerned with a few other hurdles.
I'm not very experienced in the world of Android development, so I ask those of you with much more knowledge. Aside from the sheer amount of work that would need to be done, is this even a reachable goal?
I mean, anything is possible. Ive seen older versions of sense be ported to the Nexus S, and there was a build of sense 4 on the Galaxy Nexus that never really got past just booting. It surely wouldnt be an easy task, or somebody would have done it by now. Good Luck dude.
I have a copy of a 4.2.2 Sense 5 leak that needs heavy development. I'm not concerned with the work needed, I just don't want to go through the trouble only to find that I'm limited by hardware. Which again, I don't believe will be a problem since they both run the same processor and chipset.
Reachable goal? Probably. Worth it? Probably not. Will anyone do it? Probably, but they'll stop halfway.
I would be interested, on my former Desire HD I liked to switch between aosp and sense, to everytime get the feeling I got a new phone when I changed roms

Anything is possible! Yes there are people who hates Sense but having different choices are always nice.
I think the hardest part is to resize all elements from your copy of Sense 5 rom because screen resolution between n4 and Droid DNA is different. I remembered back in the days when ppl were trying to port Sense 3.5 (qHD) to WVGA screen HTC Phone (Desire HD/Desire Z etc), they had lot of problems...
Nonetheless, good luck! (Well I should've be more positive....)

That and the Radio, Camera, and audio. The Radio will most likely be broken if you port from the HTC DNA due to the CDMA network, while the 4G side might work. The Camera will almost definitely be broken due to HTC's tweaks to it, as well as their Image Sense Chip in the phone. The Audio will most likely be broken due to there being TWO amplifiers in the HTC phone, and some hardware differences in these chipsets due to Beats Audio.
I will say however, that if you managed to get this working, I would definitely run it.
Best of luck,
Connor Baker

The reason most ports stop half way is that Sense needs HTC drivers, libs and framework. Without them things like data, camera and others will never work. Many of the greatest Devs here have tried getting it working but they can only get soo far.

This was an issue back when the MyTouch 4g was first getting ICS. There were camera drivers that had to be rewritten as well for that device. I'm fully aware of some driver rewrites that need to happen. I promise nothing other than to be persistent and determined.
I used to be a diehard HTC guy, made the jump to the nexus and love it but I miss having the option of Sense. I hope you have a decent amount of success in this endeavor.
