I got the t-mobile wifi calling app running but it only says Enabling. I wonder if this won't work on the N1. I am giving it a try though. So far it's not looking good.
From what I have been reading we may need a radio update for this to work.
Thx for the app, so far it seems like it can't connect to Tmobile's backbone.
Ditto. Download fails each time
Edit: downloaded but not connecting. Is there anything special to make it call through? Then again I am using a nexus on T-Mobile.

well maybe not but it would be nice!

Same here... Stuck on enabling.... I switched over from a bb9700 and loved the UMA on it. It was my only reason for being hesitant to switching over. If i can get wifi calling working on my vibrant that would be awesome. Tmo service is so sketchy at my house wi-fi calling is necessary!

Interesting...it appears to be working for me also...I'm running cm 6. Not showing any 3g or edge. Also not showing a continuous "enabling"...lets me straight into the app with no probs.
Edit...oh...now its cycling though the "enable"...sorry for the mis information
Are you guys on tmobile? I want to know if this is carried specific and if I can get this running on another network

I thought it was working...but I was getting hooked up to t mobiles network still...the phone was showing I was connected to wifi...but I still had network coverage. Guess it was still using the network for calls and text...so my case was a false alarm.

Just sits on "Enabling..." forever.
Sadly, it also got caught by WatchDog as 62% CPU usage...

I have a rooted NS4G. I'm running Cyanogen with Netarchy kernel.
However, I've been plagued with (although I suspect this is a feature of the phone) my 4G connection going to idle (The icon with the 3 dots, greyed out), and thus having no internet connection.
No internet connection = no push gmail notifications. No gtalk messages. etc etc etc
I took the phone to Sprint to have ti checked out, and the tech took one look at me and said 'unlocked bootloader. rooted we can't do anything for you'
which is fair enough. But he also said that it shouldnt happen, and that if i had a stock locked phone, he would be able to diagnose it.
Does anyone have a stock, locked, unrooted phone here ? Perhaps they could run some tests for me ?
What I've been doing is.
1. Turn 4G on.
2. Let it go idle.
3. Make sure it's idle for a minute.
4. Send yourself an email from a laptop/tablet etc
5. Check that you receive them email on the laptop, and that you dont on the phone.
6. if you can send yourself a gtalk message. on myphone it doesnt come in.
7. open the browser. go to a webpage. you'll notice that the 4G icon now connects, and you get the email and the gtalk message
repeat all these steps with just a 3G connection. On my phone, I get the email and the gtalk message almost at the same time as on the laptop.
My thoughts are this.
This is a feature of the phone, in that it idles the 4G connection to save battery consumption,. However, it does not fall down to 3G, hence no internet connection.
this is either a bug, or needs attention. I also have tried to open the advance data menu and you are unable to make any changes to the Wimax menus.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don't have 4g around me so I can't help you but why not just flash stock and lock it. If it still happens go back to sprint and have then troubleshoot.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
So spent the whole evening returning to stock.
Stupidly didn't back up the SD Card, so lost everything having forgotten stock ROM would wipe SD Card. <sigh>
Anyway, long story short. 4G sucks on this phone. And I mean the method, not the signal. Speeds are pretty good, but what I cannot abide is the fact that if I'mon 4G and it goes idle, I am not connected in any way shape or form to the internet, and I receive no emails or gtalk messages at all.
This is a huge shortfall in the design of this radio, and it'swhy I will be returning to the store on Monday and handing it back. I know for a fact that the Evo phones absolutely do not idle like this.
Such a shame, I really wanted to like this, but I'm not paying another 10 dollars a month to have something that hardly gets used, and when it does, not properly.
I think 3g carries that stuff when 4g is idle. Could be wrong but I don't recall not receiving notifications because 4g is idle

using your rom i just tested 3 emails with a picture attachment. the first 2 i sent while i could see it was idle and the second one i sent 1 minute after turning of the screen.
each arrived within 3 seconds to my ns4g
2-3 seconds later arrived to my archos 10.1
5-7 seconds later the gtalk notification popped up on my laptop
so for me it seems to be working fine, now if actual calls would come to my nexus id be happy
Yea. I've been in the hospital all night. Had 4g on because I get full bars here. Woke up and have emails, twitter notifications and gtalks. Obviously 4g would have been idle. Ive seen others with the same issue your having but it doesn't seem to be an issue for everyone. Try swapping for a new one unless your really just set on a different device.

i had it and stopped and have it again and theres no difference. in fact i need it because i have a tmobile phone integrated as well and when my NS has no signal at least i still get the call or text. when i de integrated it i would drive to another area and get hammered with missed call alerts and texts.
that one ticket from the 12th is STILL OPEN. yesterday i went back to my evo and it had **** signal too. and like i was saying in those 2 other areas i was it i had full signals. my ex gf has an epic and shes just a few blocks away and shes been having **** reception for over a week also. lol and she moved out on the 12th
so far today ive been on 2 bars/ 3g and no 1x
i still want that prl tho
Ok hello everyone i got a huge problem in my hands. I bought a HTC HD2 for my girlfriend and proceeded to go through the awesome process of flashing all the recoveries and what not.
Its currently sitting with latest MAG/HARDSPL and latest MIUI rom working great.
The biggest issue i have encountered is the fact that the signal is horrible, wont go over 2 bars EVER, unless it drops all the way down and switches over to Edge then has full bars (witch i don't get) She gets a connection to H for maybe 15 seconds then drops to 3G then drops to nothing.
Funniest thing is once you pick it up you can see the bars just go way down, i have goggled like a madman, researched the most i can, tried different Radio and Rom combinations.
We both are under the Simple Mobile network and i have a G2x and the signal is perfect on my phone her struggles wherever we go
I've been reading this guide and i might decide to do this, unless someone with the same issue has found a different solution to the issue.

Hey everyone,
I just bought a refurbished Nexus S for $200. I thought it was a pretty good deal. Loving the phone so far. However, last night I lost data services. The signal bars which is normally green was "greyed" out. I tried the web browser, twitter and nothing was working. Eventually I got data back in about 30 mins or so. I didn't think anything of it. Well, it happened again today. Signal bars were greyed out again. I have less than 14 days to return/exchange my device. Should I exchange it? Is this a known issue with the Nexus S? Just an FYI, I have 2 lines and data is working fine on my BlackBerry.
I'm running stock OS, 2.3.6
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Hate to break it to you but one of the few bad things about this phone is its reception. Check what radio version. Your on. If it doesn't say ke1, go on peter alfonsos web site and download the ke1 radio and flash it through cwm. See if that helps.

I'm assuming that requires me to root the phone? So if I choose not to root my phone I'm going to have this ongoing issue?
rooting and installing this radio won't necessarily help. I have the I9020A with the newest radio and i do have this problem sometimes - I'm losing signal and it recovers in random time. the weirdest thing is that I can find my network when I'm searching manually for networks. You are on rogers (based on your avatar), so i can only guess we have the same model. My brother has the I9020A also, and he has similar yet different problem - when he lost signal due to no reception areas, he has to go into airplane mode and back to normal to recover the signal. he also has the newest radio (UCKF).
You should also notice that rooting your phone will make you lose your warranty, and i guess that also the the right to exchange it.
Yes the model I have is the same as your brother's. I know in general Samsung has bad radios. Is it because it's made by Samsung or is it particular to the Nexus S? I have been reading the same issues with the Galaxy Nexus, so I'm guessing it's Samsung.
I don't plan on rooting it because I know it will void the warranty and I won't be able to return/exchange it.
i have same case , which is , when i am back in my room ,away from streets and lots walls for signal to go through , 3G signal is **** , however, you can switch it to 2G signal in order to no to miss any phone calls and SMSs. but , you Internet speed will greatly reduced ... like max 8 kb/s

You should see if your phone is set to wcdma/gsm mode. My room is a inner room also and when it loses 3g signal, it jumps automatically to gsm mode (internet speed is not an issue, WI-FI FTW ).

What Radio do you currently have?
I usually had this problem and I had to go into mobile network settings, uncheck 'Data Enabled' and select 'Network Operators' until it found my carrier.
Have you tried checking the Airplane mode and disabling again?
If you dial *#*#4636#*#* when this happens and you go into phone information, do you see it connected?
Why does my phone show full signal yet all apps that use mobile data either run shockingly slow or not at all!! My steam app is constantly reconnecting yet signal is constant! Could be you only have full bars of 2G data speed. You are either being throttled for excessive use from your carrier or your carrier only has 2G speeds where you live. Where I work the entire county only has 2G Edge speeds from AT&T even though their coverage map shows 3G for the area. Check your data type and speeds with an app like Network Signal info.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.telnet&hl=en
Happens to me a lot as well. I show full 4g and yet everything times out and wont load because data is so slow. I'm also in a good coverage area where i get 12-14 Mbps speed with other phones and when this one is acting normal.

The towers you are connecting to are probably overloaded. Thin of them as a wireless access point at your house with 1 internet line. If too many connect to and use that line, the connection gets slower. Would be nice if cell providers posted tower stats in your area. Would save a lot of angry calls

Glad im not the only one suffering.. I didnt really have the problem on stock so much.. just since unlocking and flashing new roms.
To the person who mentioned carrier throttling, its certainly not that as one minute i'll get full speed and the next (youtube for example) will just stop and start saying no signal retry and then if i turn the phone off and back on again it will work. How can a carrier throttle you when you only have a 2Gb usage limit and then they charge you afterwards that makes no sense.
Also its not a 2G problem as Signal checker shows 3G and also now EE all around my area. Besides my wife's S3 on the same network is getting full speeds where im not or anything even though im apparently at full strength H
I hope this gets sorted soon as its also affecting calls.. I'll have what looks like full signal while playing a game then suddenly a text to say someone tried ringing me like 3 minutes before!!
probably switching from HSDPA to HSPA+.
did you notice a H on top of your signal bar, that switches to H+ when the lag is over?
I have had this problem for a long time, since I got my Galaxy Nexus and now again on my Nexus 4, and finally got so fed up that I have been testing it all day and getting screenshots ready to make my own post about this so I am pretty relieved to see this post!
I live in Philadelphia and use T-Mobile. I have had T-Mobile here for years and never had this problem before. When they upgraded to 3G I had amazing speed boosts and when they did HSPA+ it got even better but that was on a G1/G2. On my Nexus phones the internet is damn near unusable in center city but what is so odd about it is that in my Google searches about the problem I can only seem to find posts raving about T-Mobile in the city and how Philly keeps getting improvements including the new improved 1900Mhz HSPA+42 but I have never even seen my Nexus 4 on the +42 network the best it goes to is +15 and even that makes no difference because the internet is so slow and unrelaible that unless I am on Wifi, my phone just sits in my pocket useless.
I'm really at my wits end about this and no one, Google or T-Mobile seems to take responsibility or have any advice on how to fix it except the pointless factory reset.
I've seen a brief mention on XDA about a fast.tmobile.com APN and I changed to that and I'd like to imagine that it showed some type of improvements but certainly not with data speeds/latency/integrity of connection. If anything, it may have improved signal 'strength' (used lightly because regardless of what my strength is listed as the connection sucks.
To be clear, I am connected to HSPA and HSPA+ when the connection is being used, like it should, but these are the best speeds I managed to get throughout the day today as I moved around campus trying different spots.
Please, someone have advice!!

I am using the stock kernel, stock radio although not the stock ROM. I am pretty sure I had this problem before I rooted (I say pretty sure to be conservative with my answer since I am not 100% sure but I am definitely 90%)
Is anyone confident about their knowledge regarding APN settings? I have seen like 15 different configurations for T-Mobile's APN and have no idea which one to try and would prefer not to just go through them one by one -- I've got things to do!

I'm on stock 4.2.1. Phone is rooted and boot loader unlocked. For about two days now I'm having signal drops from 4bars, then greyed out 4 bars and jumps between H to 3G. Settings for LTE revert to WCDMA every time I lose reception. Also dialer crashes/ force closes if I have an incoming call and sends all calls to voicemail. I can dial out but at the end of my calls when I go to hang up I see the popup that phone process crashed.
My carrier is Bell Canada and the phone worked fine for about 10 days before this started happening.
Any tips or advice to help me out is appreciated. Thanks.

I've been on several different ROMs and the issue seems to follow no matter what I'm on (CM10.1, PA, AOKP) etc..
Any ideas on what I can do?

Glad I'm not the only one, I posted last night about it. I thought the wireless was the issue too but I think that's the dodgey wireless router in this building. Maybe we need to change APN settings too? I'm on orange.
I tried manually selecting the network instead of automatic and seemed to work for about 10 mins solid but dropped again.

I've tried that too. Tried restarting, switching off all wireless connections, etc. Not working well. Now I can't get the h on my wireless icon either.

BTW I spoke to an orange customer service representative on the phone earlier. He said he'd pass on the information to the technical department since I mentioned that a lot of people were complaining online about connection issues recently. My data connection was back to normal late afternoon. How is yours?
I use mine on 3 Network and must admit it's the fasted thing ever. I thought HTC was good but this Nexus is best by far. I left Orange a short while ago as they're useless.
I'm getting the same issue. On T-Mobile UK(EE) I'm thinking it is a problem with the sim card. Had a galaxy nexus before this and data was great. Got a micro sim from the store for this phone. It appears like the connections on the sim are all to one side and touch the metal sim tray. Don't know if this may cause the issue?
