T Mobile 4g rolling out? - HD2 General

456: Free T-Mobile msg: T-Mobile's new network, available in limited areas, has made your phone even faster! Visit http://www.t-mobile.com/hspa for info
Anyone else get this text message and are now getting 4g?
I am in Hampton Roads Virginia and I am not getting4g yet. Well, I don't think so. Is there settings that I have to change?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

This has been happening for months. And no, there is no setting you need to change in order to recieve 4G data speeds.

Just to let you know, it's not actual 4G either. Tmobile just markets it at 4G speeds because their HSPA+ is currently as fast/faster than Sprints wimax service. When Tmobile goes to LTE, then it will really be 4G

Sooo,I'm kinda confused...

I been seeing lately the the new Mytouch HD has also been dubbed the Mytouch 4G which kinda makes no sense to me. My Mytouch Slide picks up the HSPA± signal alost everywhere I go (except in my house of course :l ) and from what I've read that's the only, techicnally 4G network, that T-mo plans to put out. So the MTHD being called the MT4G seems silly. Unless there's something I don't know,in which one of the great members of XDA could fill me in on =D

While you can use the HSPA+ network and will see some boost, the Slide isn't made to handle the full bandwidth available to it. If you were to use it and the 4G side be side, I'm sure you'd see a considerable difference.
We can use towers that are rated 4G but will never reach the 21.1 Mbps. I thought hspa+ was their high end 4G, and standard 4G was just hspa. I only say that because UTMS is 3G, not hspa.
Except HSPA and HSPA+ are really expanded 3G services. 4G is LTE and Wimax. It's just that sprint's wimax is so slow.

Well if you want to be technical, as it stands neither LTE or WiMax are 4G compliant.
Remember, when the iPhone 4g (or was it 3g?) came out, it was ONLY a name, it did not mean it supported 4g (or 3g) speeds...

Agreed wholeheartedly! No service provider has 4g and out of them all Tmobile has the fastest data connection. If you are in a hspa + area.

My phone stay on this speed. After I flashed that new rom with 2.2.1 I've had this "H" for a long time. That's the only network I get unless I'm in my house then I get edge coverage lolz.
send from mytouch 3g bruh

[Q] 4G symbol instead of H for HSPA+ ?

Ok. I've pulled the images from the EVO dump of the 4G connection notification symbol...but how would I link them in a custom framework-res.apk to appear whenever I am connected to HSPA+? I would like to know when I have "4g Speeds" without going to About Phone, then Network.
This would be nice!

agreed ...
Has there been any developements on this subject. Would be really nice to know when I am in 3G or a 4G area. It really should have came that way new
I would also love to see this in somebodys rom!
They could replace the 3G with a 4G, but not both because t-mobiles network is the same tech, just upgraded.
There is no way for your phone to distinguish this in the actual rom. Sorry if this dashes hopes.

The phone's "about phone" section under settings can detect the difference between 3G (UMTS-HSPDA) and 4G (HSPA+), so why couldn't the same info be passed on to the ROM's data indicator?
Why would you want "4G" when the phone is not "4G"....
"H" is good enough for me. it is HSPA+

HSPA+ is 4G now according to the International Telecommunications Union, so it is a 4g phone and capable of 4g speeds

If you want to be "honest about it" Speed requirements for 4G are the peak download speeds are 100Mbits/S for mobile means of communications. HSPA+ is only capable of speeds around 56Mbits/S download.
Technically they (the ITU) have stated our current technology is "4G". but it all honesty, it's only like 3.8G.
Normally that would be true but now legally due to the recent FFC ruling HSPA+ is considered 4G as part of another marketing gimmick by wireless provider. As they all wanted to push for it so now HSPA+ 21 now divide that by half is actually capped on the phone now divide that by half again and thats your actual speed lol. This is why TMo got away with claiming to be the largest 4G network in USA lol hence no one revolted not Sprint or Verizon as TMo beat them at their own game. As delivering 4G in 2010 is just another inside joke you won't believe how many morons would pay or upgrade their dataplan thinking 4G is better without actually getting anything IRL. I had an idiot who argue with me he was getting 4G service on a device that was not even 4G capable. I had to explain to him he is benefiting from the network upgrade but its still HSPA.

I agree with you on the fact that HSPA+ isn't true "4g", i just wanted to point out that people calling it 4g are in the clear....technically lol

Yea i agree. I just cannot wait to see what is going to happen with true "4g" starts to roll out.
"Here at ____ have the first 4G system"
"wait i thought you said had 4G back in 2011"
"we did but that wasn't 4G, this IS 4G"
if we cant get the 4g to appear up at the top notification bar why cant we just create an application that polls the about phone for the HSPA+ or UMTS-HSPA and display an icon on the desktop that tells us which one it is? its not the best solution but at least when i'm on the home screen i can tell if i'm on 3G or 4G
THAT would be sooo cook. I hope someone figures out how to do it.

Okay but "H" isn't what T-Mobile calls 4G. "H" just means HSPA, not HSPA+. The Mytouch 3G was capable of "H" speeds.
I have seen screenshots from Inspire 4G where you get an "H+" icon in HSPA+ to differentiate it from just plain HSPA. Maybe someone can figure out how to port that distinction over to your phone?

H is hspa for tmobile there is no difference between hdsa and hspa for the notification bar the only way to tell is to run speedtest

[Q] 4g speeds with MetroPcs(Is it Possible)

Is it possible? Cuz I bought an Epic frm craigslist but I dont know if I should go with boost for 3g speeds or just take the chance with metro...And I live in South Florida in 4g coverage area for metro
I highly doubt it, Sprint is the only company offering WiMax 4g is the US as far as I know.
Metro pcs has lte/wimax in a few cities. If they are usng the same spectrum then your chances are good that somebody can make a work around for that. Which I go to detroit mi once a week and they have their 4g there so I would use it if someone does this?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah but it's just to find the genius who could do it...A couple of stores are near tom me but I doubt they could...I'll just wait or search my good friend Google til something pops up
How is the Epic going to work on MetroPCS' 4g? Doesn't Metro's 4g network run on LTE 1700 / 1900mhz in the very few areas they have 4g?
Sprint's WiMax/4g runs on 2.5ghz (2500mhz), so how would the Epic pick up a Metro 4g signal?

MetroPCS does not have WiMax. They use LTE (1700/1900) for their 4g. Sprint/Clear (and partners like Comcast/Time Warner e.t.c) use WiMax.

This was the point I was making, but wasn't sure if maybe they hooked up with Sprint at some point in time recently. We don't have Metro available in Tennessee...at least not that I have seen.
Metro and sprint use 2 completely different technologies.
If they used wimax and sprint had no wimax in the area, you should be able to 4g roam, but since sprint is essentially the only major provider its kindaa hard to get on someone elses wimax network
What I wanna know is can a metro pcs lte phone roam off verizon/any form of lte on the same frequency?
EDIT: nevermind. Verizon uses 700mhz
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Well, you could always double down and get a Clear account!
Thanx for the replies people...Guess I'll just go with boost & satisfy with 3g speeds

Three network vs T-mobile (Pay monthly)

Hi guys, I have a pay monthly sim which is from T-mobile and it will end in 4 Months and i am waiting for Samsung s4 release. Basically which network provider is better? I want to swap to Three because they have cheap and good plan for the S4.. What is your experience with this network provider? Do they have fast internet? are they better than T-mobile?
Regards.
LTE has been deployed in a few cities already and the DC-HSPA speeds are pretty good. Not sure about Three though as I've never really heard of them. LTE speeds seem to be consistently 20Mbps down and around 30-50msec pings from the screenshots I've seen for KC and Vegas. And getting the $30 5GB plan is really good.
I assume you're talking about the UK? Three aren't rolling out 4g until q4 of this year, tmobile will never roll out 4g, you need to go to EE for that. Three's dchspa is great from my experience-

I have a Nexus 4 on Three currently, using their £12.90 plan with AYCE data, speeds seem to fluctuate alot for me, between 0.5Mbps and 12Mbps in the same room of my house, depending on the day. Ping times are lower than 100ms 80% of the time, so fast page loading. My Mum is on T-Mobile (using an iPhone 4 so no DC-HSDPA, not sure if T-Mobile support it anyway) and her speeds are never higher than 2Mbps down with 200ms ping, haven't tried her sim in my phone so can't comment on if it's phone related or network, but what I suggest is get a Three payg sim, top it up with a bit of credit and check the speeds in your area, also check their coverage map as they don't have a 2G backup everywhere (only rural places with little to no 3G)

[Q] 4g less then 3g

Just bought a new Galaxy 4 and i'm only getting 3g in my house. As of yesterday with my 3D HTC, I was still getting 4g.......anyone know the answer to why i'm getting worse signals??
The evo 3D only did the slow old 4G called wimax the new S4 uses LTE a new type of 4G that is 5 to 10 times faster than the old 4G it is slowly rolling out so be patient you can only use the new 4G on the S4.

I knew the guy selling me the phone would lie about the service. He told me regardless of the LTE in Tampa I would still be able to use 4g wimax.

Ha.. not the first salesman to lie, probably won't be the last.
I am in Tampa as well and when the phone is in cdma /lte mode, I get the 4g icon quite often. The problem is that date is very slow or non existent while on 4g. So I keep it on cdma only now.

Thanks for the reply from someone in Tampa....do you know when we are getting full LTE coverage? the salesman told me I could at least still get the 4g winmax coverage. Also, I head the phone doesn't have the icon for LTE so there is not way of knowing if we are in LTE....is that correct?
I have the galaxy s4, so I do not connect to the old wimax 4g. When my phone is showing a 4g connection, its LTE. However, Like i said, it's not fully implemented, at least that is my guess. Because date speeds are VERY slow or nonexistent even when show full bars with a 4g icon. I have seen the 4g icon in many places around tampa, but, 3g is faster so I leave the LTE mode off. As for when LTE is scheduled to be fully on, I don't know. I've been getting the same answer for a long time. "by the end of the year", is what they told me most of last year.
The GS4 does not have a wimax radio, so you can not pick up a wimax signal, only LTE. If it displays 4g, then you are getting an LTE signal.
You can use sensorly app on your phone to get a map of LTE in your area thats done by users.
Here is information regarding Tampa LTE:
