Just bought a new Galaxy 4 and i'm only getting 3g in my house. As of yesterday with my 3D HTC, I was still getting 4g.......anyone know the answer to why i'm getting worse signals??
The evo 3D only did the slow old 4G called wimax the new S4 uses LTE a new type of 4G that is 5 to 10 times faster than the old 4G it is slowly rolling out so be patient you can only use the new 4G on the S4.

I knew the guy selling me the phone would lie about the service. He told me regardless of the LTE in Tampa I would still be able to use 4g wimax.

Ha.. not the first salesman to lie, probably won't be the last.
I am in Tampa as well and when the phone is in cdma /lte mode, I get the 4g icon quite often. The problem is that date is very slow or non existent while on 4g. So I keep it on cdma only now.

Thanks for the reply from someone in Tampa....do you know when we are getting full LTE coverage? the salesman told me I could at least still get the 4g winmax coverage. Also, I head the phone doesn't have the icon for LTE so there is not way of knowing if we are in LTE....is that correct?
I have the galaxy s4, so I do not connect to the old wimax 4g. When my phone is showing a 4g connection, its LTE. However, Like i said, it's not fully implemented, at least that is my guess. Because date speeds are VERY slow or nonexistent even when show full bars with a 4g icon. I have seen the 4g icon in many places around tampa, but, 3g is faster so I leave the LTE mode off. As for when LTE is scheduled to be fully on, I don't know. I've been getting the same answer for a long time. "by the end of the year", is what they told me most of last year.
The GS4 does not have a wimax radio, so you can not pick up a wimax signal, only LTE. If it displays 4g, then you are getting an LTE signal.
You can use sensorly app on your phone to get a map of LTE in your area thats done by users.
Here is information regarding Tampa LTE:

Will Verizon Lte network have any effect on the Fascinate?
Nope. You would have to have a different radio to be able to pick up the signal. Sadly we can't do this through a software update.

The effect it will have is sadness. That LTE is so fast and we are 3g!!!

As long as the LTE network isn't hooked up at the same places the current network is and they don't have to share any bandwidth between them, there won't be a difference. If one cable is carrying all the traffic from the current 3G system and the upcoming 4G network, there could be some slight slow down in data speeds, but that would be the only way it would affect you.
I live in the middle of nowhere, so LTE won't have an effect on any phone I buy for years to come.
If Verizon follows Sprint's lead, the fascinate may actually gain an advantage by not incurring the extra fees associated with LTE access (e.g. the EVO 4G)
I don't expect to see LTE penetration beyond the biggest urban markets for quite some time (remember how slow 3g spread?)
This is me just thinking, but the LTE rollout may actually help us a bit. My reasoning in this is that some of the load will be lifted off of 3g when people start moving to LTE, giving us more bandwidth. Thats just me thinking though.

Negative on that. Actually LTE is to cover 110 million people by the end of the year alone, and full penetration (97% of territory) by 2013. I see their efforts ramped up much more this time around
I'm the primary on my families plan so I just have to wait a year and I get to upgrade so hopefully by them 4G well be in my area and there still be some legit 4G phones to choose from.

This is true indeed...probably would take some time to lighten bw loads, but caps would be raised eventually and 3g speeds would increase some

Agreed, however this depends on how quickly they get phones rolling out, but I think by then we will also want to be on lte phones.

LTE phones will appear at earliest Feb or March of next year, and thats a best case scenario....
The new LTE network is ran on a seperate fiber from the current 3g network. 3g is T1 based, LTE is ethernet. One will not affect the other.

This is "somewhat" true. Yes, LTE is on the ethernet backhaul network (requirement for LTE). But a good portion of the country also has EVDO on ethernet as well.
Bummer... I was hoping that much like the Tmobile network it would help our phones... Thank you for the information.

Plus the fact it's not even close to my area of living
yeah cell providers called it that cause it sounded good, and for them was technincally the 4th generation of mobile internet - but it is not what 4G officially stands for.... there IS NO real 4g networks anywhere, as the standards are in their infancy.
Old news. ITU said this a while back. It's funny, I talked to Verizon at their Chicago LTE launch event and they laughed and said, it's all marketing anyway, so who cares.
ITU has no teeth, so no one really cares.
WiMax and LTE are 4G networks that aren't being used as that yet. All that's needed is a firmware upgrade to make it true 4G.
Tmobile on the other hand will never have 4G with their current network.

Mmm... No. If you want to equate it to something, LTE and 802.16e WiMax that Sprint and Verizon are pushing out is like 802.11b Wi-Fi. Real 4G (LTE-Advanced and 802.16m WiMax) would be more like 802.11n.
Basically, just ask yourself these questions to tell if it's 4G:
1) Do I see speeds of around 100mbps average?
2) Is all traffic being done via IPv6?
3) Are calls being made as VoIP?
Pretty sure that article is way off. I agree that it's not true 4g, but tmobile's hspa+ doesn't even get close to 12mb. Most of the time it barely reaches 4-5mbs.
yeah verizon and sprints networks are more like 3.5 g or 3.25 g. t mobiles is still 3g but since everyone else is slapping 4g stickers on their network they thought they would too, especially since the average consumer doesnt know what the f 4g is anyway. and meanwhile at&t is still trying to get 3g working lol.

I don't know about the rest of you all, but I live in the central valley, CA and 4G is widely available throughout the region. I average from 6-10mbs down when I do a speedtest. But I only enable 4G when I really need it, otherwise my battery dies rather quickly.

Technically LTE and 801.16 in their current implications are called Pre-4G, however, the networks are being built as 4G networks. They are just not being utilized as such and the standards for both types of 4G aren't even finalized yet. They are fully packet switched networks with support for IPv6. The only place where the networks fall short is bandwidth, true 4G requires 100MB nominal speeds with at least 1GB peak. That can't happen until the standards are finalized.
T-Mo's HSPA+ is 3.5G and will never be 4G. There was a wired (I think) article just today saying they were thinking about chipping in on WiMAXs spectrum for their next generation network, aka 4G.
Edit: From the article:
One network representative, who asked not to be identified, claimed that ITU's 4G line-in-the-sand is being misconstrued. The organization previously approved the use of the term "4G" for Sprint's WiMAX and Verizon's LTE networks, he said -- though not for T-Mobile's HSPA+ network.

Huh... Clear map says you have coverage... take the 4g issue up with them. Call Sprint with your 3g issues, you might get a credit. ALso, if you jump ship remember SPrint own 3times as much spectrum then Verizon or Att. Eventually when their networks are congested, Sprint will have plenty more to play with.
i agree..3g here has been horrible since november of last year and verizons service here is awesome..on top of that verizon lte will be in my area in a few months...even more of a reason to jump ship..
Hey, 4g is in philly, not south jersey, we get the ****ty outcast signal , i want 4g all over south jersey! Were now in quarter 1 of 2011 when this phone has been out for almost a year! Poll: Do u think the Sprint Galaxy Nexus will be LTE or Wimax Ready?
Thought this was discussed before but seeing that lte was such a big thing about the GN, i'm willing to put money on it being lte. Especially since sprint will be doing their upgrade to lte, why have such a top of the line, cutting edge phone on a network that's going bye bye?

Well i hope it is LTE. However i hope it doesn't make sprint release it late when lte finally rolls out.
If it doesn't come LTE ready then its probably a sales tactic. If it doesn't get rolled out til mid 2012 (LTE) then it wouldn't surprise me ifthey didn't have it.

Also i think the could maybe release it earlier if it didn't have any 4g and just 3g.
is it possible for a phone to be both LTE and WiMax? because if not, and Sprint's actually getting this thing next month, there's no way it'll be an LTE device. Sprint won't have LTE ready for the better part of a year at the earliest.
My gut feel, for the timing of it, is that it won't have any 4g. 6 months ago that would have been crazy, but it wouldn't look as bad now sitting on the shelf next to an iPhone.

Ya i forgot the 3g only option in the poll
Sammy hax the wimax antennas and they got to get rd of them. Wimax has to stay around for a year or better for the people with phones and hotspot cards for home and laptops. Unless there is only one version of the prime, I think they will get there own flavor with wimax.
Got to justify the $10 extra right?
Specs for Galaxy Nexus Prime say LTE and Hspa, no WiMax. Unless they are going to build a special one for sprint 4G will be out of the equation for awhile. Here:
http://www.google.com/nexus/#utm_campaign=us&utm_source=ha-bk&utm_medium=sem&utm_term=+nexus +prime
at first i thought no wimax but it would be stupid to put a lte radio when its going to costs sprint extra money. i am positive they have an inventory of wimax radios they need to get rid of.
It's going to have an LTE radio.
There's no way that they're going to make a special device with Wimax just for Sprint [Now that Sprint has declared Wimax dead] and there's no way that it's not going to have a 4g option [Considering being LTE/HSPA+ capable was part of the presentation]
Being as LTE is right around the corner for Sprint, it's a good selling point too.
I will eat my own head if Sprint releases an LTE phone with functioning LTE network anywhere by Spring 2012.

That's cool. Sprint never said "Spring 2012"
They said "midyear 2012"
Also, couple of replies to this:
1) If you fully understood Network Vision you would understand why it is going to be very easy for Sprint to reach it's goal of 120 million LTE covered by the end of next year.
2) And really more importantly, if you completely understood Network Vision you would realize that LTE really isn't that important.
The speeds delivered by their 3g coverage, with the roll out of Network Vision, will be more than sufficient enough to not validate wasting the significant battery LTE takes.
I can't see Sprint releasing a phone with a 4g radio that cannot be used on its network now - just does not look good from the marketing standpoint. Therefore, I think Nexus Prime Sprint will have a WiMax radio.

Wouldn't be the first time Sprint releases a phone with features that are planned for future deployment. The EVO 3D comes with their CDMA push to talk technology that's replacing iden. Wouldn't be surprising at all if the Galaxy Nexus included an LTE radio on Sprint's band. I'd really love Sprint's version to be a world phone. Hopefully they can include GSM and HSPA+.

I agree, and even though they say Turkcell has one of the fastest networks available worldwide, and Steve Wozniak's thoughts about the network, I can't really say that its that fast because I used the same network for 4 years. Maybe it was the phones I used, who knows?
