Wanted: Instructions for enabling the recovery menu in gimped SGS. - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi,
I have a new SGS i9000, but the recovery menu is disabled. The 3 button press does not work. Does anyone know how to enable this. I would require a step-by-step stupid proof set of instructions. This is my first Android 'phone and a lot of the terminology is foreign to me, but any standard Linux/UNIX terms are not.
Please don't suggest using the one click lag fix to enable root access, because all this does is copy the update.zip onto the SD, and then instructs the user to boot into recovery mode.
Best wishes,
U.

look in the Development sub forum, there are several topic related to the 3 button SPL fix that Samsung Canada released.
just flash it to your phone, and you will get the funcionality back

I have been lurking around here for a while (Yes another noob) and have been thinking of rooting and flashing my phone to DJ05 from this page.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869990
However, before I do I hoped some of the more experience guy/gals maybe able to enlighten me a bit.
The Radio is basically what it sounds like right. Cell/data service, GPS, wifi, and ect?
The kernal is the os under the gui?
The rom is the GUI?
I looked at the stickes and the wikki and I am a bit confused.
First I need to root my phone with the one button flash instructions on the stickes.
Then what.
What do you use back up?
Can I back up games?
Is there a simple step by step instructions that start how to put phone in the right mode?
What do install on computer to flash?
Will this also get rid of all the bloatware?
Basically where to start step by step including what programs to use?
Like I said I'm a complete noob, and apprciate any and all help.
Thx
Scott
In the developement section there are stickies. They will get you from stock to rooted to romed.
There us an app called z4root which is a 1click rooting system and far better then the adb program imo.
After that you want to flash cwm.tar also coverd in the stickies.
Get familiar with odin. Remember pda button is your friend.
After you have rooted , make a back up through rom manager....
Sigh...... Its 4am my puppy woke me up. Someone else can take over lol. Pm me if you need assistance over the phone I can walk you through the whole process if need be.

This is your one-stop shop for all your questions
Is there a wiki project affiliated with xda? I would like to organize everything I know about bricking and fixing these things, organized with hyperlinks. A lot of times I don't know the most efficient solution, but that could be refined.
It would be nice if I could see a question here and simply point to section 12a.13 of a comprehensive guide, concisely written (not necessarily my strong-suit I admit) with brief jargon and a complete glossary.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.

The radio/modem/baseband is basically what you say, yes. It lives on it's own partition.
The kernel is the OS.
Afaik ROM is a general term, and can include any combination of kernel, ui changes, and system apps.
You mau root with a one button app like z4root. However manual roots don't take long, and ensure that you have working samsung drivers, and a working adb environment, and at least a basic knowledge of how your phone can be modified in a shell if everything goes FUBAR on you. It is just nice to be prepared, and to know how to at least root (and unroot) your phone if the one clicks hang or stop working.
Avoid even considering a voodoo install until you a) have installed a clean rom like super clean or blackhole and configured it with adw or launcher pro b) replaced the kernel if you found it too slow or replaced the modem. c) still notice lag (specifically during disk writes - ex you stream a ton of rss feeds and email constantly) that is intolerable to you. d) you have bricked and fixed your phone on at least two different ways already and are prepared to take full responsibility for whatever crashes happen and for data lost. Ie. You are a newcomer, you should probably just stay away, non voodoo kernels are quite smooth -i have always been satisfied.
Titanium backup pro does a wonderful job of restoring your most important apps. I recommend not backing up every item / system data. It is just easier for me to stay lightweight. It also gives you the ability to freeze/delete bloatware.
Rom manager and accompanying cwr gives you a way to backup almost everything. It is CRITICAL to do this backup before doing any odin flashes or installing any ROMs for the first time.
Yes you can backup games.
I am not 100% clear on modes.
* if your phone is working and you installed adb on your computer like you should have -simply type 'adb reboot download' or 'adb reboot recovery' EASY! (what I do)
* download - Hold volume down button while your phone is turning on until you see the yellow warning sign. (get it? Down for download). You use this mode for heimdall/odin
* recovery - hold volume up & down buttons while turning on phone. If you get a battery icon instead, unplug the phone or the battery. This is basic stock recovery, not CWR.
Heimdall or odin for flashing. Always use pda button. Put on android SDK and set your path variables too. And of course install samsung drivers for your phone!
Where to start? Read the first post of every sticky in this forum, particularly in development.
Don't post to development.

Thanks for all the help. I have read some of the stickes. I will read the rest. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Rooting my phone - Every step of the way.

I bought my Samsung Nexus S from a Koodo booth here in Canada two days ago and have been enjoying it quite a lot since. I've also been reading up on the wealth of information pertaining to rooting it and trying to sort out so many different factors. I notice I'll have to use the search feature to find one little triviality that comes along and the fix it.
Then I decided to just make my own thread where I'll post every step of the ways I find and how I figure out how to solve my issues involved with rooting my phone.
To start, I found out you can create a backup with NANdroid.
I couldn't find any information on where to download this elusive "NANdroid" and then heard from This thread that all I have to do is
kenvan19 said:
Now lets get started. First, how does one install mods on Android? Lets do a NANDroid backup to begin:
1) Turn your phone off.
2) While holding the Volume Up button press the power button until the screen turns on and you will see a black screen with an Android on it and a lot of numbers and words that will mean nothing to you. This is called the Bootloader. In both the bootloader and the recovery mod you will use the volume buttons to navigate between options and the power button to select one.
3) Navigate down to Recovery option and select it.
4) Navigate down to backup and restore
5) Navigate down to backup and select it and let it run.

This didn't seem to be the case when I followed these steps; coming first to the predicted screen,
(containing this information)
Code:
FASTBOOT MODE
HW VERSION - REV 16
BOOTLOADER VERSION - I9020XXKA3
BASEBAND VERSION - I9020UCKB2
CARRIER INFO - ATT (but im with Koodo?)
SERIAL NUMBER - Lots of digits.
LOCK STATE - LOCKED
Also giving me the option to select between
Reboot Bootloader
Reboot
Recovery
Power Off
When going into recovery mode I'm greeted with an animation of a box with an arrow coming out of it. This turns into a triangle with a exclamation in the middle of it.
From here I press power and volume up to come to a menu that is supposed to have a NANdroid option I've been told.
Instead; I get the options:
Reboot system now
Apply update from /sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
At this point I'm currently stumped, though I'll continue searching as I'd rather not be stuck without a backup before starting the rooting process.
UPDATE: Even though I'm weary of proceeding without backing up, I'm sure I'll be able to restore my phone back to factory somehow.
I spent the night downloading and installing the Android SDK, then started configuring my device for use on windows 7.
Currently I'm in the bootloader interface after installing my phone's device drivers while being in fastboot mode.
The drivers take a couple of minutes, but they install successfully!
On I go, I'll just point DOS to the directory I want it to. Now I'll run the program through dos. What's this?! AND ERROR!?
Psht, I WOULD be missing the "AdbWinApi.dll" Not a hard thing to fix. I'll just google for the file!
Oh! I don't even have to download the file, the directory has just changed!
That was an easy problem to solve with many solutions provided!
Time to try again!
Sweet, it works. WHOA! TEXT ON MY ANDROID WHAT ARE YOU DOING!
And I select Yes to come to a nice screen that says my phone is now unlocked!
Now I need to download an image file? Okay. I can do this.
Okay, flash recovery the flashboot. Looks like the image has updated since the thread's instructions. Hopefully it's still compatible.
Now I just need to root. Just need to install a nice zip file.
AAAND, I can't seem to push it onto my phone for some reason. Time to search.
Oh, I can just copy and paste this file by enabling USB storage and dragging it over.
I'll just follow the rest of the steps, to no errors! Whoo! I'm free to install any ROM I want!
You'll need a custom recovery for nandroid, but first you will need to root. There's guides in the nexus s general section on doing that.
I kind of like this post.

I just read through Kursk's guide for rooting the i9020a and i9023 and noticed I have no ability to backup my android in the case something goes wrong.
Am I missing something, or do I have to root before having the privilege of backing up my phone's current ROM.
edit: Got sidetracked by a thread in the Chef's forum and learned that Java is the language for App development for Androids. Been reading about the Android OS and how it works for the past couple of hours. Brains bursting. xd

^ Has pretty much all you need to know for installing a custom recovery and rooting your phone.
It's only once you've installed ClockWorkRecovery Mod that you'll be able to easily make backups.

Is there a morons guide

Im embarrassed to say that as a first year programming student I am frightened by most of the guides.
So many steps and so many requirements it makes me wonder just how this community got to be the size it is.
I lack an sd card and only recently found how to move files onto my phone. And while the 21 or so step process for unlocking the phone is documented I don't understand what im doing more do I understand what some of the steps mean (such as the two different kind of caches im clearing).
Also the version text im given to reference methods from fails to make sense when my phone has 3 or 4 different version numbers all pertaining to different things.
I like the features offered in these roms and would love to explore more and even contribute.
And while im not asking for an iPhone cracking app (though that would be great) a for dummies guide that explains the steps as you go along with maybe some visual elements would be extremely welcome.
Since I lack the resource to buy multiple phones im going to study and decipher the guides that are available but it would be great if someone more knowledgeable than I took the initiative to help dumb this all down or atleast point me towards a wiki I could use as reference material

What exactly do you want to do? Unlock bootloader? Root? Both? What carrier and county are you using & in? What firmware are you currently running?
Unlock bootloader, root, perhaps a custom rom

Well when doing any modding there is a chance of messing things up and no one wants to do that. I am an engineer with programming experience and I still ask dumb questions ... so you are not alone.
So what you want to do is this... hopefully this will work for you.
1) Make sure you have the Motorola Drivers installed for your pc setup (i.e. x32 bit or x64 bit)
2) Download and install RSD Lite 5.31 (links in my N00B Guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600)
3) Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
4) Download the Unlocker SBF for AT&T users under UNLOCK in the OP (will be labeled pudding.rar)
5) Extract .sbf file to your C:\
6) Put phone in RSD Mode by powering off and upon powering back on hold the Power Button + Volume Up.... should say entering RSD Protocol Mode
7) Open RSD Lite on your PC and drag the .sbf file onto the file path bar (better than finding it with the "..." button)
8) Connect your phone to your PC with usb cable & select device by clicking/highlighting it in RSD Lite Program.
9) Select "Start"
10) It's a small .sbf file, so it shouldn't take long to flash... hopefully you get no errors here... this is the part where if something wrong is gonna happen, it's usually gonna happen here.
11) after sbf flash & reboot, download fastboot files (also available from the Pudding thread, where you got the sbf file from under ROOT)
12) unzip the fastboot files to a folder that you will not forget or delete... ever
13) Put phone in fastboot mode by powering off, then upon power on, hold power button + volume down. select fastboot by pressing volume up button... should enter fastboot protocol mode
14) Connect phone to PC if still not connected
15) Open a command prompt on your pc from the folder you saved the fastboot files (hold Shift + Right Click... Open Command Prompt from here)
16) Type this in command prompt: "fastboot oem unlock" Should see the same thing as the image at the bottom of the OP in the Pudding thread. Can type it again after the unlock process and it should say that you are unlocked.
17) if phone doesn't reboot after unlock, type this command: fastboot reboot and it should reboot phone then, and you will see unlocked signature at top left of screen.
To Root, I would just suggest that you pick a ROM and apply it... most of the well known ROMs will include Root for you. You will need a CWM Recovery to flash most of these ROMs, so that would be your next step: Go here and install this CWM Recovery via fastboot using the commands in the OP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500 Make sure to download the version on the left (non-zip version) for fastboot install.
After you have CWM installed you can flash a custom ROM. You can also flash most ROMs with fastboot as well, just check and see if the OPs of the ROM you want to flash has fastboot install instructions.
If you want to attempt Root first before installing CWM Recovery, you can try the 2nd post in this thread which uses fastboot & adb: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204 The sbf flash in the OP of this thread, which is supposed to include unlock bootloader & Root has been giving some people problems that have stock 2.3.4, that's why I gave you the old school way / directions above. But if you want to try it and ignore all the above directions, I guess you could just try that 600 mb sbf flash for 2.3.4.
Let me know if it works, or you need further explanation / help.... check my N00B guide too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
here's an automatic script for unlocking your bootloader, select what version your phone is and proceed.
if you've updated to Android 2.3.4 though, you're going to get a semi-hard brick, just boot into fastboot mode and proceed with the instructions and you'll get through it. don't panic

I weep for the future. Precious snowflake syndrome at its finest. Life is hard.
My recommendation:
Try to follow one of the guides. They're all pretty inclusive, though they have many steps and prerequisites. If you get stuck at a specific step, ask the question. But, TRY! If you do, you might actually LEARN something.

[Q] Sorry... but how to root?

Hi Everyone, first - I apologize if this is already covered somewhere in here, I promise you that I scrolled through dozens of posts and even bricked my xoom twice before I decided to write here... so here is my situation:
I have a MZ604 WIFI only US version xoom, currently restored back to original and updated to latest Google allows 4.1.2 JB, device is locked.
I want to get to 4.2.2 but I know Google don't support us anymore, so looking at how to root then ROM to 4.2.2
Again - I'm sorry if this is existing somewhere in here, the only posts I could find were out dated (from 2011 and 2012) and did not work, can someone please explain / guide / direct me to a clear instructions on how to first of all root the machine? then flash to any of the suggested ROMS? your favorite rom suggestion is also appreciated!
For example - I found this:

and this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026100
and they both look awesome! but no instructions, how to root first, then I guess I need CWM to install the actual rom? maybe this is for people who are already familiar with the steps and are comfi with just the link, but I need a little help...
Thanks again and sorry...

If you want to install a custom 4.2.2 ROM, you don't have to root. All you have to do is unlock your bootloader. Make sure you have adb and fastboot set up (there are tons of tutorials around on how to do this), then boot your Xoom into bootloader mode. To do this, turn it on, wait for the Motorola logo, count to 3 at a reasonable speed, then hit volume down. Keep hitting volume down until the screen reads "fastboot mode" and then press volume up. Plug the Xoom into USB, go to a command prompt, and type:
fastboot oem unlock
Follow the on-screen instructions to unlock your bootloader. It will wipe all your data. Once that's done, boot up your Xoom and download whatever custom ROM you want. Put it on the Xoom's internal storage somewhere. Next, download ClockworkMod recovery for the Xoom WiFi. Put this on your PC somewhere and rename it to cwm.img (easier to type that way).
Reboot back into bootloader fastboot mode (instructions above). Go to a command prompt and change directories to whatever folder you saved ClockworkMod into. Type this:
fastboot flash recovery cwm.img
fastboot reboot
Wait for the Motorola logo. Count to 3 at a reasonable speed, press volume down. This time, press volume down until you see "Recovery Mode". Press volume up. This will boot you into ClockworkMod recovery.
Use the volume keys to navigate the menus and the power button to select. Scroll down to "Install ZIP from sdcard", then navigate to find wherever you put the custom ROM file on your Xoom's internal storage. Flash it, then do a wipe data and cache (also inside clockworkmod), then reboot your Xoom.
At this point, your custom ROM should boot and you should be in business.

[ROOT\RECOVERY\ROMS][NX008HD8G] Nextbook 8" Resources

WARNING: These files are reported as not working on Next8HD8G tablets manufactured after August 2013. Check your serial number. If it begins YFG1013... YFG1113... or higher, do not use these files. You may try to root using Cydia Impactor instead. If you do root one of the newer tablets, please dump the ROM for the rest of us!
Nextbook 8"
The Nextbook 8 is an afordable 99USD tablet from walmart. Widelly adapted but not with any serious unofficial development going on. I purchased one for a friend and couldn't resist to tweak it. I tried to find some ROMs to no avail. Also rooting was a long journey. So I decided to create this resource thread to help out people to this device and even present my own ROM. So without further to do I begin :
Rooting & Recovery the Easy way
Rooting was my first concern so I could de-bloat the tablet itself since it came with various unused software. The most efficient method I came across was the one presented by shaunmt at the freaktab forums here. So let me show you how it's done.
1. Download the modified stock recovery from shaunmt
2. Extract the archive and place the image in the root of your external SD card! NOT THE INTERNAL ONE!
3. Download and copy the root package by Kyser to your external SD card!
4. Power off the tablet and then hold down both volume keys while holding the power button. The tablet should show the first splash screen and then a black one followed by the recovery screen.
5. Use the Volume keys to navigate in the menu and the power button to confirm your selection. Select flash from EXT (or something like that), then select your SD card and then select the root package to install. The root package will be installed. Navigate back to the root mneu and select "reboot system"
6. Rooting should have finished and your tablet once powered on should be permanently rooted. But in the case that you don't see a root management application go to the Play Store and download either SuperSU or Super User.
7. Finished!
ROMs
1. Stock ROM - Packed by shaunmt at freaktab - here
2. nextGen 8" - By CedArctic - Comming soon
Always perform a full wipe when installing ROMs. Neither of these ROMs has been personally tested by me. Shaunmt from freaktab owns all the work on the thread (except my ROM).
Reserved for future needs
Keep an eye on my threads at FreakTab... there is lots more coming soon...

i did every step and installation was aborted... any tips?
You don't have the custom recovery file in your EXTERNAL sd card. The stock recovery aborts the installation due to not recognising the google installation keys.
How would I go about dumping the ROM so we can make recovery and a custom ROM. Mine is the newer one. Rooted and debloated

sir shaunmt can you examine my dump files if it is usable in porting any custom recovery in my device? here's my dump file..

thanks for the help in advance..
Same here
I picked one up for either modding or dismantling it to see if I could build it. So the root thing is new to me, I have been spending a few days reading over you guys tuts and suggestions. I came across this one and it seemed fairly simple, take the downloads, extract to SD and recovery reboot? However it has not worked. If I push both volumes I get small yellow script at top saying DNX Fastboot mode, if I do the volume up button with power, I get the options of REBOOT, RECOVERY,POWER OFF, and I believe one other one. Either way I seem to hit a wall. I'm have no doubt it's me, but I would a appreciate a lil advice.
Thank you
NX008HD8G, Firmware? Root?
Hey Guys! I was wondering if maybe there was another link to the files? Has anyone figured out how to update the firmware on the NX008HD8G? I’m having trouble trying to root and I’m unable to find anything on how to at least update the firmware to 4.4.2. I’ve been having trouble with google play services, and could use either the stock rom or maybe a custom. Please help! Hopefully someone sees this!
