Is there a morons guide - Atrix 4G General

Im embarrassed to say that as a first year programming student I am frightened by most of the guides.
So many steps and so many requirements it makes me wonder just how this community got to be the size it is.
I lack an sd card and only recently found how to move files onto my phone. And while the 21 or so step process for unlocking the phone is documented I don't understand what im doing more do I understand what some of the steps mean (such as the two different kind of caches im clearing).
Also the version text im given to reference methods from fails to make sense when my phone has 3 or 4 different version numbers all pertaining to different things.
I like the features offered in these roms and would love to explore more and even contribute.
And while im not asking for an iPhone cracking app (though that would be great) a for dummies guide that explains the steps as you go along with maybe some visual elements would be extremely welcome.
Since I lack the resource to buy multiple phones im going to study and decipher the guides that are available but it would be great if someone more knowledgeable than I took the initiative to help dumb this all down or atleast point me towards a wiki I could use as reference material

What exactly do you want to do? Unlock bootloader? Root? Both? What carrier and county are you using & in? What firmware are you currently running?

Unlock bootloader, root, perhaps a custom rom

Well when doing any modding there is a chance of messing things up and no one wants to do that. I am an engineer with programming experience and I still ask dumb questions ... so you are not alone.

So what you want to do is this... hopefully this will work for you.
1) Make sure you have the Motorola Drivers installed for your pc setup (i.e. x32 bit or x64 bit)
2) Download and install RSD Lite 5.31 (links in my N00B Guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600)
3) Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
4) Download the Unlocker SBF for AT&T users under UNLOCK in the OP (will be labeled pudding.rar)
5) Extract .sbf file to your C:\
6) Put phone in RSD Mode by powering off and upon powering back on hold the Power Button + Volume Up.... should say entering RSD Protocol Mode
7) Open RSD Lite on your PC and drag the .sbf file onto the file path bar (better than finding it with the "..." button)
8) Connect your phone to your PC with usb cable & select device by clicking/highlighting it in RSD Lite Program.
9) Select "Start"
10) It's a small .sbf file, so it shouldn't take long to flash... hopefully you get no errors here... this is the part where if something wrong is gonna happen, it's usually gonna happen here.
11) after sbf flash & reboot, download fastboot files (also available from the Pudding thread, where you got the sbf file from under ROOT)
12) unzip the fastboot files to a folder that you will not forget or delete... ever
13) Put phone in fastboot mode by powering off, then upon power on, hold power button + volume down. select fastboot by pressing volume up button... should enter fastboot protocol mode
14) Connect phone to PC if still not connected
15) Open a command prompt on your pc from the folder you saved the fastboot files (hold Shift + Right Click... Open Command Prompt from here)
16) Type this in command prompt: "fastboot oem unlock" Should see the same thing as the image at the bottom of the OP in the Pudding thread. Can type it again after the unlock process and it should say that you are unlocked.
17) if phone doesn't reboot after unlock, type this command: fastboot reboot and it should reboot phone then, and you will see unlocked signature at top left of screen.
To Root, I would just suggest that you pick a ROM and apply it... most of the well known ROMs will include Root for you. You will need a CWM Recovery to flash most of these ROMs, so that would be your next step: Go here and install this CWM Recovery via fastboot using the commands in the OP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500 Make sure to download the version on the left (non-zip version) for fastboot install.
After you have CWM installed you can flash a custom ROM. You can also flash most ROMs with fastboot as well, just check and see if the OPs of the ROM you want to flash has fastboot install instructions.
If you want to attempt Root first before installing CWM Recovery, you can try the 2nd post in this thread which uses fastboot & adb: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204 The sbf flash in the OP of this thread, which is supposed to include unlock bootloader & Root has been giving some people problems that have stock 2.3.4, that's why I gave you the old school way / directions above. But if you want to try it and ignore all the above directions, I guess you could just try that 600 mb sbf flash for 2.3.4.
Let me know if it works, or you need further explanation / help.... check my N00B guide too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
here's an automatic script for unlocking your bootloader, select what version your phone is and proceed.
if you've updated to Android 2.3.4 though, you're going to get a semi-hard brick, just boot into fastboot mode and proceed with the instructions and you'll get through it. don't panic

Try to follow one of the guides. They're all pretty inclusive, though they have many steps and prerequisites. If you get stuck at a specific step, ask the question. But, TRY! If you do, you might actually LEARN something.

Trying to root - problems [SOLVED]

Hey guys.
I've been attempting this all morning and so far I've had no luck. I have a VodafoneAU Legend which I updated to the official 2.2 yesterday. But now I want to try root.
I've been trying to follow the HBOOT 1.01 guide but there's a few problems. First, I cannot connect to the phone with adb unless it's in htc sync mode. No other mode will work. So when it's time to copy testimage.zip to the card I have to change from sync mode to disk mode, whereby adb loses it's connection. What do I do about this? Is it a driver problem (in Win7 here) or something else?
Thanks,
Dave.
Ok, the first problem were drivers.
Now I can't finish the second guide. When I try using clockwork to install the firmware.zip, the phone just boots to the red triangle. What do I have to do?
Dave.
So I pressed the up button/power combo at the red triangle and get the Android system recovery. Selecting "apply update.zip" says it can't verify. What do I do? Is this guide for my phone or do I need to follow something else?
I don't understand this guys. Anyone help? I'm thinking since this is a step to root the phone, I'm not actually rooted yet so I can't use the clockworkmod? Then what is the guide for? The guides at unlockr don't mention what firmware/hboot they work for so I'm not keen to try them yet.
Read the guide on fake flash. You need the recovery file named "update.zip" in the root of your sd to proceed..

But isn't that what Rom Manager does? Download the update.zip then run it? Man this is getting even harder to understand.
Edit: And this is left out of the HBOOT 1.01 guide because.....????? When I work this out I'll write a PROPPER guide, lol.
Just checked and update.zip is on the card.
So which part of the guide am I getting wrong?
Decided to reinstall phone with the official froyo release and am now ready to try this again. Is there anyone that will walk me through the process? I will write a complete guide if the "gotchas" are still there.
i feel for you ... hope you get it fixed... thats one of the reason i havent dared messing with the phone because i've seen a few post like yours where something didnt go quite as described... for whatever reason... and im sure the answer is out there but just not within the guide instructions... i guess there is no way to gather all gotchas because there are so many environment variables...
good luck
and please share your technique
Just saw gobczak's thread in the developer forum having similar troubles with Vodafone UK phone, getting the red triangle at reboot. I'll keep an eye on his thread and see how he goes with it.

No because the guide didn't say to.
The thing is it seems I'm only stuck on the part where the firmware.zip file has to be flashed. The guide says to use clockworkmod for this. But when I try installing the clockworkmod recovery it gives some file verification error. Isn't there ways to do this via the pc, either through those batch files, adb etc? Or will that fake-flash update.zip file work?

As I just posted on the other forum, I think you need to skip that step in guide 2 and go straight onto guide 3 after you have flashed the LEGEIMG.zip, rebooted, and then removed LEGEIMG.zip from the SD card.
Guys I've got to the point of downgrading to 1.31. But when I run the first batch file it just hangs at the "Writing zip" part, with the htc logo on the screen. Is there any way to fix this?
Can someone please explain this part of the guide:
Phone will reboot and find LEGEIMG.zip on your sdcard, copy it into RAM and check it. If you get CID error at this point, then you don't have goldcard.

Ok, so I don't get an error. I get nothing. The phone just boots to the fastboot screen. If I press the power button it goes to the hboot screen and I can see the messages of loading LEGEIMG.zip. But the guide doesn't say to press anything.
So should I or shouldn't I press the power button? Also, if I try making the goldcard again, at which point in the guide do I start from again? The entire process or just copying LEGEIMG.zip to card then rebooting phone? I mean, will all the other things like flashing misc1-2.img still be there?
Guys I finally got this working.
The first problem was with the goldcards. For whatever reason formatting them with the win7 format tool just wouldn't work. I had to use the command-line format tool, setting the block size etc manually.
The second problem was the unnecessary steps in the guide. A few people helped me out with this (namely blackbart at the Aus Whirlpool forum), but basically in the second step you can stop after flashing the LEGEIMG.zip. The updating froyo part isn't needed - for my phone anyway.
Then when running the batch files in the third part, for whatever reason the first batch would keep hanging at 'writing zip...' and I needed to remove the battery to unfreeze the phone. flannigan, also from the Aus Whirlpool forums suggested to just go on to the second batch file. This worked!
So my Legend is now finally a true Legend
Anyway, thanks for the help everyone - couldn't have done this by myself.
Dave
Great news, I think we need a new guide focused on rooting for HBOOT 1.01 / Stock Froyo to clear up the inconsistencies in the existing one. It's a minefield for a noob (or a rite of passage!), a revised guide will certainly save a lot of time and frustration for those taking this road in the future.

I'll write one if ya's want. I wanted to include little tidbits like downloading the apps required (visionary, rom manager etc) from the market then backing them up to the card with Astro so if it goes all wrong and you have to start again, you can just install them all from the card Also on using adb to push the files (roms, img's etc) when the guides say "copy this blah blah". Much quicker than changing to disk mode and back. Sound good?
Sounds good! Happy to help and add my 20c worth along the way. The existing guide has got the meaty bits, a new guide would cull the stuff not relevant, help fill in the gaps and alert to the pitfalls we've fallen into.

I agree... i've done my reading since june of last year but then didnt check for another 4 months... and so many how to's pop up with various ways of doing it depeding on the situation... a lot of those howtos were consolidated howtos which sometimes make intermediate steps unenecessary (may be in some cases causes more head aches since it didnt take into considerations on newer version of hboots...etc)... an updated how to will be much appreciated...
And you're right the most important pre requirement is to have a safety net ... so starting with how to create a back up in case you screw it up is a must!
but im glad it worked out for you!

Rooting my phone - Every step of the way.

I bought my Samsung Nexus S from a Koodo booth here in Canada two days ago and have been enjoying it quite a lot since. I've also been reading up on the wealth of information pertaining to rooting it and trying to sort out so many different factors. I notice I'll have to use the search feature to find one little triviality that comes along and the fix it.
Then I decided to just make my own thread where I'll post every step of the ways I find and how I figure out how to solve my issues involved with rooting my phone.
To start, I found out you can create a backup with NANdroid.
I couldn't find any information on where to download this elusive "NANdroid" and then heard from This thread that all I have to do is
kenvan19 said:
Now lets get started. First, how does one install mods on Android? Lets do a NANDroid backup to begin:
1) Turn your phone off.
2) While holding the Volume Up button press the power button until the screen turns on and you will see a black screen with an Android on it and a lot of numbers and words that will mean nothing to you. This is called the Bootloader. In both the bootloader and the recovery mod you will use the volume buttons to navigate between options and the power button to select one.
3) Navigate down to Recovery option and select it.
4) Navigate down to backup and restore
5) Navigate down to backup and select it and let it run.

This didn't seem to be the case when I followed these steps; coming first to the predicted screen,
(containing this information)
Code:
FASTBOOT MODE
HW VERSION - REV 16
BOOTLOADER VERSION - I9020XXKA3
BASEBAND VERSION - I9020UCKB2
CARRIER INFO - ATT (but im with Koodo?)
SERIAL NUMBER - Lots of digits.
LOCK STATE - LOCKED
Also giving me the option to select between
Reboot Bootloader
Reboot
Recovery
Power Off
When going into recovery mode I'm greeted with an animation of a box with an arrow coming out of it. This turns into a triangle with a exclamation in the middle of it.
From here I press power and volume up to come to a menu that is supposed to have a NANdroid option I've been told.
Instead; I get the options:
Reboot system now
Apply update from /sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
At this point I'm currently stumped, though I'll continue searching as I'd rather not be stuck without a backup before starting the rooting process.
UPDATE: Even though I'm weary of proceeding without backing up, I'm sure I'll be able to restore my phone back to factory somehow.
I spent the night downloading and installing the Android SDK, then started configuring my device for use on windows 7.
Currently I'm in the bootloader interface after installing my phone's device drivers while being in fastboot mode.
The drivers take a couple of minutes, but they install successfully!
On I go, I'll just point DOS to the directory I want it to. Now I'll run the program through dos. What's this?! AND ERROR!?
Psht, I WOULD be missing the "AdbWinApi.dll" Not a hard thing to fix. I'll just google for the file!
Oh! I don't even have to download the file, the directory has just changed!
That was an easy problem to solve with many solutions provided!
Time to try again!
Sweet, it works. WHOA! TEXT ON MY ANDROID WHAT ARE YOU DOING!
And I select Yes to come to a nice screen that says my phone is now unlocked!
Now I need to download an image file? Okay. I can do this.
Okay, flash recovery the flashboot. Looks like the image has updated since the thread's instructions. Hopefully it's still compatible.
Now I just need to root. Just need to install a nice zip file.
AAAND, I can't seem to push it onto my phone for some reason. Time to search.
Oh, I can just copy and paste this file by enabling USB storage and dragging it over.
I'll just follow the rest of the steps, to no errors! Whoo! I'm free to install any ROM I want!
You'll need a custom recovery for nandroid, but first you will need to root. There's guides in the nexus s general section on doing that.

Am I missing something, or do I have to root before having the privilege of backing up my phone's current ROM.

It's only once you've installed ClockWorkRecovery Mod that you'll be able to easily make backups.

All the tutorials presume unlocking of the bootloader. afaik, nobody has bothered to find a separate privilege escalation method of rooting for the N7.
fastboot is available from Google (SDK) for Linux. That means that fastboot methods are identical, irrespective of platform.
There is nothing that prevents you from re-locking the bootloader after you have rooted - with the penalty that unlocking it later will cause a full wipe of /data.
Technically though, it is the *act* of unlocking the bootloader that causes a voiding of the warranty. If they really wanted to do it, I have no doubt Asus could detect a re-locked bootloader (by examining low-level flash write counters).
cheers
Thanks but i was wondering if someone could explain it to me a little more clearly and pro give a link to a tutorial
Unlock the bootloader. There is zero reason not to, except for the factory reset it does.

I can understand where the guy's coming from. I've now Googled about six different 'tutorials' on how to root the Nexus 7.
They are all total ****. Horribly written with unclear, incomplete, and contradictory instructions.
Seriously--that one you linked is only good if you already know how to do it. For someone that doesn't...it's useless.
I rooted my 7 months ago (unlocked bootloader, etc.), but lost root with the 4.2.2 update. I can't find the instruction set I used last time, and the tutorials I've found so far actually have me wishing whoever wrote them was here now so that I could beat the **** out of them.
Seriously, whoever wrote them--especially the one you linked--sucks. Bad. A lot. Terrible writing.
A shortcut is to install Windows in Virtualbox and use Wug's utility to get the job done, an extra step but this will surely save you a lot of time to do it manually.

I dont understand what is so complicated about rooting a nexus device. it is literally the EASIEST device to root and flash. Not sure why people need walkthroughs or tutorials.
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
reboot into recovery
install supersu.zip
what part of that is complicated that requires someone to hold your hand and help you type out the commands??
@fre1102
Well, I suppose that poorly written tutorials and a flood of newbs looking to be spoon fed is good for generating ad revenue for XDA. Not really great for what made it a compelling site in it's early history, though.
On the other hand, the OP asked a help question - and failed to do so in the help and questions forum. That certainly appears like a lack of paying attention, does it not?
I suppose you might have a complaint if you had actually been paying someone to give you advice, but to complain about the quality of something that costs you nothing seems a bit like an entitlement problem - whether you are correct in your appraisal or not.
It's an internet bulletin board - there is no barrier to entry and the quality is going to vary widely. That makes it YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to decide what to believe. It's not as if people are coming in to your home and forcing you to do any of this stuff.
Nobody here owes you anything; this site has always encouraged folks to take responsibility for their own actions. If you have a rooted device that is borked - simply put, that is YOUR FAULT. Period.

You can even cut that down by a step by installing the latest version of TWRP 2.4 which will autmatically detect an unrooted rom and root it for you.
I gotta admit though that getting some custom roms was a little confusing to me in the beginning after rooting and flashing a samsung phone using heimdall in Linux. It's the lack of a good guide that really didn't help. I was hoping that there would be a sticky in the Q&A or a wiki topic about it but those sections for the nexus 7 aren't that organized.
Maybe we should start using the wiki... It would be easier to keep up to date even if someone decides to abandon a thread since anyone else can go in and edit it, and if we get repeated questions we can just copy and paste a link for those who want to be spoon fed since they will always be a constant presence on this forum.
EDIT:
I had to use the cyanogenmod rom building wiki to get a good, well-written guide on unlocking the n7 and flashing a custom recovery. Good thing I had started building the rom before I got the device shipped to me since it helped to have a "good" version of cwm6 laying around.

Good deal. Some folks go to the trouble of customizing some udev configuration files (I think it's udev, but can't remember right now) so that unprivileged Linux users have permissions on individual USB devices.
To me that seems like quite a bit of trouble for stuff that I do infrequently (using fastboot); I just drop to a root shell
$ sudo /bin/bash
#
and save a couple keystrokes with the fastboot commands.
BTW, when using adb from Linux, it is only necessary to start up the adb server with root privileges - the server process is the only thing needing privileges on the USB bus, so
Code:
$ sudo `which adb` devices
gets the party started but
$ adb pull /sdcard/myzipfile.zip
won't result in files owned by root.
Not surprisingly, all this stuff is less cumbersome using a Mac OS/X flavor of Unix - by default the USB devices are reachable by unprivileged users without any udev/hotplug diddling or sudo invocations.
cheers

[Q] Before I install Kit Kat I would like to root my phone

Hello
My phone tells me that it is ready to update to Kit Kat.
Before I install Kit Kat I would like to learn how to go back to Jelly Bean if things go t1ts-up.
So, I would like to learn how to root my phone?
I would also like to learn how to backup everything including the Jelly Bean operating system, and I would like to know how to revert my phone back to Jelly Bean?
Please forgive my ignorance, but this whole process genuinely scares me. I have only ever rooted my Samsung Ace phone once and the experience left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I did manage to root my phone. I also thought that I had created a backup but when I tested the backup I discovered that my phone got wiped and I ended up with a brick. I eventually found an official Samsung ROM but it wasn't the one I wanted and it caused a few problems, especially with the Bluetooth feature.
I hope you can understand or appreciate my apprehension with even contemplating such a task on my expensive Nexus 4.
Cheers muchly

I would suggest that you study up and follow this guide here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
I was like you when I first got the nexus. Didn't know what to do and the steps seems to be so complicated. Hell..I even took couple of days to finally succeed in installing the drivers. And for me I think it is better to learn the basics of using adb before trying out the toolkits. If you start with toolkits and you will later on rely entirely on the toolkits. This is not good as some problems, the toolkits might not be able to solve it for you.
Btw, look into original android development for wug's toolkits. It is pinned there. Should be easy to find.

You seem to be taking interest in Rooting and stuffs. I would suggest you to get handy with a few ADB and FASTBOOT commands and you won't need any toolkit ever in Life !!!
Its very very very easy in Nexus Devices.
Here is my attempt to make you learn :-
1. Say Bye Bye to your phone OS version.
2. Open Command Prompt or Terminal.(Assuming, you have SDK & Drivers installed)
Code:
adb devices
It shall return you the device id.
3. Reboot to BootLoader
Code:
adb reboot-bootloader
4. Check for your device's recognition in FastBoot Mode.
Code:
fastboot devices
5. I assume you have all the files(Factory Image tar.gz extracted to a folder)
just type :-
Code:
flash-all.bat
BOOM...
You are now on stock KitKat !
Now, To get a Custom Recovery (IMHO go with TWRP),
1. Download latest recovery from the official website.
2. Type when in FastBoot Mode.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.4-mako.img
(Or whatever the name is)
3. Reboot your device.
Now, to get the ROOT ACCESS, after booting up the device,
1. Download the latest UPDATE-SuperSU zip from here.
2. Keep it somewhere in DEVICE STORAGE.
3. open TWRP RECOVERY
4. FLASH that ZIP
5. HIT THANKS !
Have Fun ...
Welcome to the Flashing Fraternity !!! LOL

Hello
Thank you for replying but I fear that I will not be following your advice at the moment.
I initially asked how to ROOT my phone so that I can learn how to do backups and recoveries. My phone is ready for the Over The Air official upgrade.
I want to take things one step at a time rather than causing problems by blindly following code.
Sorry

If you want official OTA update of KitKat you should update it, and after that unlock bootloader and root phone. That way nothing will go wrong.
If you unlock bootloader and root your phone OTA update will cause problems like stuck in bootloop(your phone will be stuck on nexus logo and it will never boot into android)
If you want to learn about rooting I suggest you this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2367406
this is excelent tutorial how to root your nexus 4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179
and if you are more comfortable to hear and see somebody do it you can check out this page it have video of full process and pictures for every step http://nexus4root.com/nexus-4-root/how-to-root-nexus-4-windowsmac-osxlinuxubuntu/
Good luck!:cyclops:

This process is an absolute nightmare.
All I want to do is back-up my Jelly Bean phone operating system and have it safe in case the OTA Kit Kat goes wrong. I thought that this was sensible and safe practice before doing any updates, especially something as serious as a system update?
I have now tried several Tutorials on how to root my phone and all I have succeeded in doing is wiping my phone clean and returning it to Factory Settings. The latest Tutorial was here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
I followed the following advice to this point
1) All of the files that are required, need to be in one (i.e., the same) directory. It does not matter what it is called, but all the files need to be in there, with NO subfolders. EVERYTHING needs to be extracted into this one directory;
2) Download the attachment from the end of this post and extract the contents to the directory created in step 1. (Latest version for Windows is here). Note: if all you want to do is unlock your bootloader, skip to step 7 in this section (C).
7) Reboot your device into bootloader mode (by turning it off, hold volume down, and press and hold power) and plug it into your computer;
8) Open a command prompt in the same directory (i.e., make sure you are in the same directory as your files are located). You can hold the shift key when you are in the folder in Windows explorer and right-click in a blank spot and it will open a command prompt.
I then get to the bit about rooting
E. Optional -- Root
If you want to get root access follow the steps below. (And no, this will not flash a custom recovery, and not, it will not make you "not stock".) Unlocked bootloader required. See steps above.
1) Download (to your computer) the latest version of CWM (from here) or TWRP (from here) for your device;
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/developers/mako?name=Google Nexus 4
And when I click the link I am blinded by options. This is a nightmare.
Could somebody please cut through all this hyperbole and just explain how I get ROOT?
I have been at this for 24 hours solid.

The point you are missing is that your fear is clouding your ability to simply read and comprehend the proper steps to take. My friend rooting your phone with a toolkit is a simple task but you ask what is Wugs toolkit instead of taking the time to search for it an read up. YOu do not want to root your phone but to have someone do it for you. I used to do this for people back in the days where I would log into their pc and root their phones from my home.
My friend its simple your bootloader is unlocked and now all you need to do is push a recovery over to your phone. Now go to the TWRP thread and download the image file and follow the instructions given to you to flash the recovery. I fear if following these simple directions are too much for you maybe you should simply leave your phone alone before the next step is you calling Google with an issue or having to buy another phone...
Sorry but thats my honest opinion....
Edit: Boot into bootloader and check to see if its says unlocked. If so then all thats left is flashing a recovery

Reading your posts, I understand your frustration. Here are my suggestions, 1) step away from your PC for a few minutes or an hour or get a cup of water, 2) put the phone aside, 3) read and re-read the information in Google Nexus 4 threads just to get the knowledge first and then start working on your phone. You will be doing fine. BTW, you should have a back up phone that you can use while working on your Nexus 4.

You got it man I know but sometimes the truth hurts... You have been given all the information laid out for you in the posts above. If this is still too difficult for you your only other task is to actually have somebody do it for you this is nothing more than simply reading and taking your time. I tell you this with all sincerity I would rather see you stop now than later see another thread created by you saying possibly bricked

I trust that you have read the entire guide from that link you post. To get you see this clearly. Rooting is very easy. You just have to:
1. Install driver, download platform-tools (if you don't wanna download the entire android sdk) and SuperSU I trust that all the links are given in that guide.
2. Make sure you device is detected in adb. Copy SuperSU.zip into your device.
3. Unlock your device.
4. Push recovery. fastboot flash recovery recovery name.img
5. Reboot into recovery and flash SuperSu.zip
6. Reboot. Done.
Really..this is all it takes to perform a simple rooting. But if you're not the one who likes to read..and try to understand the steps. I suggest you not to mess with your device. You are more likely to brick it than make it better. The truth hurts but it is for your own good. Unless you prove me wrong. Then you are awesome instead

How I Achieved Root on 4.4 Dev Edition

I know it seems like there's a lot of threads on Rooting already, but I was having the hardest time trying to find the correct thread for me because of the different variants of the Moto X. So I figured I'm not the only lost soul around here and wanted to take help someone else out. So here's I achieved Root after updating to Android 4.4. Keep in mind, Rooting Android 4.4 forced me to Reset my device and clear everything on it. I really didn't have a problem with it because I just got my device on 1/30/14.
1. Unlock the Bootloader
---- I made it easy on myself and followed QBKING77 on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sxgz7jxRMw
I have been following his tutorials since the days of the old htc EVO, great guy..
2. Install TWRP and SuperSU
---- I followed "" Guide for Unlocked Bootloaders "" by dray_jr http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2603358
There are a few problems here though.
At Step 2: After installing the SDK, to make things easy for me I have always created a folder name "" Android "" at the root of the C drive and copied the SDK contents: eclipse, sdk, SDK Manager.exe, to it. It just makes it easier for me. So it in turn sets my path for the fastboot to C:\android\sdk\platform-tools
At Step 3: Make sure to copy TWRP "" twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img "" along with "" mfastboot.exe "" into the directory that your fastboot.exe is located. In my case it would be the C:\android\sdk\platform-tools directory.
After flashing the Recovery, the command "fastboot reboot recovery" didn't work for me. It doesn't have that command available. Instead, go to your phone and use your Volume Down button to choose Recovery on the Fastboot Menu and use the Volume Up button to select. I repeat, use the Volume Up button to select Recovery. I am so used to using the Power button to select that it kept turning the phone off and rebooting since I still had the USB cable plug into the phone. So learn from my mistake and don't waste your time by pressing the Power button.
Other than that, the rest of the instructions from the above guides worked for me. So thanks to qbking77 and dray_jr for their tutorials.
I didn't know qbking77 did motox videos. He was great in the GS2 and GS4 forums.

Yeah I wish I'd seen this 24 hours ago. I had to figure much of this out myself. I swear it was easier to unlock and root my old GNex than it was to unlock and root my "unlockable" Verizon Developer Edition Moto X!

Well it should have been easier. That was a nexus....
Seriously though, how hard was this? Unlock bootloader given website key and flash TWRP and flash superSU zip. Took like 2 minutes. Of course it could be longer if you needed to figure out the Sdk.

Maybe I'm wrong....but with the boot loader unlocked....I'm pretty sure rooting this and my N7 was the exact same procedure.

It was just annoying to have to jump through hoops just to GET the Unlock code, which was several lines of gobbledygook that had to be transcribed carefully and then retyped. Some people (like me) aren't conversant with ADB and command windows and such. (Yes I know, maybe people like me shouldn't be rooting around under the hood of our phones.)
May end up ordering a GSM Developer Edition tomorrow. I believe it's the same procedure as outlined here. Can someone confirm this.

christ, you typed out the unlock data?

I also agree this was a royal pain in the ass. Took me forever to find this information as well. This is not my first rodeo, btw.
Are you guys downloading and flashing SuperSU separately? Because when I flashed TWRP it advised my phone was not rooted and fixed it when I rebooted. I didn't have to download or flash anything separately. It was incredibly simple...after going through the website for the unlock code of course.
And yes, just like the Nexus devices, unlocking the bootloader automatically does a factory reset and erases all data as a safety precaution.

right fastboot reboot recovery doesn't work.
You could do... fastboot reboot bootloader to get into bootloader instead of messing with holding buttons.

After i follow the above steps for my GSM Moto X Developer Edition with Android 4.4, will i still be able to get OTA updates as long as I keep the stock ROM ? I like the stock ROM anyways. Also any issues with the hands free "OK Google Now" voice feature after rooting and unlocking bootloader?
After doing this we should be able to retain unlocked and rooted right?
