Screen protector or no? - Epic 4G General

I was just wondering what your guys thoughts were on screen protects for this phone. I've used them on my last 2 devices, but I've read this phone is susposed to have supper tuff screen. I have a protector on now, but it really messes with the colors on the screen and I wanna take it off.
Anyone scratched the screen yet?

I will never use screen protectors again. After countless frustrations with them, like getting dust under the film or sticky feeling textures, I'm done. I love the way a glass screen feels.
I'm a pretty careful person. I never put my keys in the same pocket or drop the phone. So for me, no protection is just fine.

My moment, evo and epic all had zepp screen protectors. So what it's got a tougher screen, wouldn't you feel better you're protecting your investment? This phone wasn't cheap.

I've gone to best buy and had them put it on. My epic, the first one was messed up so they got another one. They've been trained to put these on. They've put many on. If there's a problem or one is messed up, they'll get another one. Yeah you pay for installation, but if they don't do a good job, they'll redo it. Try that yourself...

I have literally taken my keys and dared my friends to TRY and scratch my screen... as hard as we tried... couldn't make even the smallest scratch... took some balls to try it the first time by myself tho haha... once you realize how amazing this gorilla glass is you will feel sooo much better about it.

And they have better tools at their disposal than thee primitive ones that come in the package.
Another alternative, take the package and the phone to a good window tinting place. They know how to get it perfect. After they stop laughing at you for bringing in a phone...
Since it's such a pita to put those things on, let the pros do it.

I just had one put on by bestbuy today. I had previously used a zagg and installed it myself when I was a crackberry user. This time I said hell no im paying to get it done. It seems to have a slight effect on the way the capacitive buttons work(not as sensitive as before) but I had read that is a potential problem. Personally id rather have an ugly screen protector then a potentially permanent scratch on the screen...

Wait, you people put a screen protector that CAN be damaged on a screen that CAN'T be damaged? <facepalm>

Get Zagg sheild protector for the epic....their protectors are amazing

I got a clarivue on mine, it was easy to install, no watery mess, it uses static, and it is super clear and not noticeable. It doesn't affect the capacitive buttons on the bottom and the screen doesn't feel weird like those other protectors do.

RE
I initially bought the Sprint screen protector at the store on release day and had it on for a few days. Unfortunately, I wasn't very happy with the way the screen looked (even giving it 4 days or so to clear out).
I took it off and was amazed to have the normal screen back. It's been a few days since then and not a single inkling of a scratch on it.

I've got a clairvue and a realook screen protector in the mail right now and I just peeled off the generic protector I was using. I am gonna go with a naked screen until I get near my 30 day limit and see how it looks.

I dropped mine getting out of my car last week, it fell maybe a foot and it now has tiny scratches on the top and bottom but thankfully not on the display itself. Bought a screen protector the next day.

Here is the flow chart and a video to help you make your choice:

I love that video, which is why I didn't get a screen protector.
Mine did not survive unscathed a drop that was a fraction of what his did.
I know it is my fault, I'm the idiot that let it get dropped. I just want to let people know the Epic 4g is not as scratch-proof as that video leaves you to believe.

I've seen a couple drop test that show the screen does scratch from a 1 foot. I just HATE the sprint protector. I've had sheilds from ZAGG before and really liked them. I guess I"ll get another for this phone.
FYI: do not get the sprint screen protector.
1. It does not protect the entire front face, only the screen itself. EVEN though the reps will tell you it covers the entire front of the phone.
2. It really screws up the colors of the screen, white seems to be a bit of green/blue/red not a real white.
3. It makes the screen harder to see in sun light.
4. It sucks.
5. ?????

If you are in the edge or unsure if you should get a protector, get one from stealthguards.com for just 2.85 shipping and they are exactly like the zagg material. I ordered one for my epic and haven't got it yet but the one I got for my iPod works great.

I ordered a phantom skinz, I have a generic one on until it gets here. Rep told me it was a bad idea to cover the whole glass, because it could mess with the front facing camera. I covered as much as I could with it and it looks stupid only being partially covered. Hoping the skin gets here tomorrow.

got my ghost armor on order will have a review and pics up of it, had zagg on my hero and loved it. seems to be reports that ga is better so imma try them. dont use the front facing cam as i know one person who has qik and i dont talk to them much

I was stupid and had my phone in the same pocket as my keys. I did this for 2 years w/ my iphone 3g and it didn't have a single scratch on the screen. 1 week with this epic and there are micro scratches everywhere. Do not believe the hype about the screen durability, get a screen protector if u're going to put them in the same pocket w/ anything that might scratch it (keys, coins, etc).

Need Screen Help Badly!!! Please

PLEASE READ EVERYTHING
Okay, so here is what is going on. I just bought my new T-Mobile MDA about a week ago. I decided to get a screen protector for it. Well whoever made it didn't cut it right, so it wouldn't go in right. anyway, I had to lift it up. that made AIR BUBBLES ON MY SCREEN!!!
I had to put the screen protector back on to try to smooth them out (so i wouldn't scratch my screen). i think some a little bit of stuff got traped under the screen protector. but i left it on until today when i bought a bunch more (different brand) from best buy.
but when i took the screen protector off it left the air bubbles still, and then their are dust looking things that i can't wipe off, i have been trying really hard...
PLEASE HELP ME!!! anything you can recommend will help! ( I don't want anything wrong with my screen.)
here are some pics that will help you get an idea of what i am talking about.
this first pic is the white dust looking things I can't get off. (if you can't find them don't worry i circled them in the 2nd pic)

same as 1st pic, but red circles around the white things so you can see them better (they don't show up very well on the pics
yet another pic of the white things
finally the pic of some of the air bubbles (they were worse)
[/b]
Ok just to get the sequence of events correct, this is how it all happened?
1 You applied the screen protector and saw the dust and bubbles
2 You removed the screen protector but still see the bubbles and dust
If that is the case, go to TMobile or wherever you bought your phone and you should be able to get another brand new one since its within 30 days of purchasing it. I know that this is policy for Cingular.
yeah
1. bought MDA (no air bubbles or anything)
2. bought screen protector
3. tried to put it on, but it didn't line up right
4. pulled off screen protector but it caused air bubbles in screen
5. washed the screen protector, and put it back on
6. tried to smooth out air bubbles in screen (but it just added more with screen protector on (like whole screen with tiny air bubbles)
7. also noticed dust like things
8. took screen protector off to try to wipe screen clean for new screen protector
9. found out it wont come off and air bubbles still in screen
does anybody know anything i can do to fix the problem (has it happened to anybody before?)
i don't really want to return it to t-mobile because i don't think they will take it back and replace it for free.
Read the return policy. If its within 14 days they should replace it for you.
http://support.t-mobile.com/knowbase/root/public/tm21963.htm
lets see, i bought it on the 24th of july... it is the 7th.... ummm if you count the 24th, then today would be the 15th day.
wow, that really sucks. i will still try to take it in and say like half days make it 14 days.
maybe i am wrong, but to me it is look like you did not notice that the phone has already a screen protector, than you tried to put another screen
protector. and when you pulled it of, it actually made bubbles between the screen and the first screen protector. i say that because from the pictures you have posted the screen looks mat, but the screen (without any screen protector) should be shiny. also i can notice the edges of a screen protector. maybe you can post a better quality pictures so we can see more clearly.
I have to agree with the above comment that last picture looks to me like it has already got a screen protector on he bubbles stop a millimeter away from the plastic rim of the case, if there were bubbles under the real screen they wouldnt stop there but carry on under the plastic rim instead. if ya get me ?
Anyway bubles under a screen protector usually work themselfs out after a few days, well at least mine did.
sorry about the poor quality pics guys. i only had one camera that i could use and it is bad for pictures (good for video )
anyway, it took me a while to get the screen not shiny, that is why it isn't shiny... i had to angle it right.
about the original screen protector... i didn't know there was one, so maybe they are just under the screen protector, but they still do not thin out when you try to smooth them (you know).
can anybody confirm that it does come with a screen protector on it when you first buy the phone?
GTASouthPark said:

that is because there is dust inside the bubbles so you cant thin them out.
Yep the device will arrive with a slightly matt finished screen protector on it to stop any damage or marking to the screen, also the screen protectors you put onto it have them so you may need to be very careful and peel off everything to get back to the plain screen at which point you should lose the bubbles at the edges.
just call t-mobile
tell them " Something wrong with your screen , tell them you did not drop it and it's been only 15 days or even 5 month . They will send you new one but you have to send yours back to them in the same box or they will charge you full price.
yeah i had called T-mobile, so they are sending me a new one. and i just send it back. but it was really crazy. thanks for every body's help.
alright so i got my new phone...
so did you guys take off the small screen protector that came on it?... and then put another one on?... or what did you do.
because i have a lot of screen protectors. i am just wondering if it is worth taking it off and putting another one on.
like will it do the job of keeping it scratch free and protecting it? or should i go with the new ones?

[Q] Dust under the screen

Does anyone else have any issues with dust being trapped between the layers of glass on their screen?
I've actually been waiting for a replacement phone since day one (due to a scratch on the screen from the factory), but today I noticed a new problem that wasn't there before. There is now some dust that is trapped between the layers of glass.

Sorry about the crummy picture. I'm not sure if you can tell but if you're looking at the phone itself, it's obvious the dust is on some middle layer, due to the way the shadows fall. Since it's not on the outermost layer, I see no way of getting rid of this.
Has anyone else had this problem?
maybe try a burst or two of canned air at the edge of the screen?

That is a bad idea, I did that once on a Nexus one.
It had two spec of dust under the screen, i removed the battery and used canned air. When I turned the phone over the lower half of the screen was filled with dusts.
My suggestion is to get a replacement.
E
I woke up today and noticed dust under my screen as well. I have no idea how it got under there, or when, I just noticed it today.
Has anyone done any replacement due to this issue? I'm afraid I'm going to get a refurbished phone if it gets exchanged. For those who bought at the microsoft store, do you get your exchanges there or are they sent to you?
just noticed dust inside my screen today
This has me a bit nervous because I noticed a bit of lint under the screen today. The point of entry appears to be the speaker above the screen, which has tiny holes which may allow dust to get trapped (permanently?) underneath. With that in mind I certainly wouldn't recommend blowing air on it which probably would just push more dust through the holes.
noticed a large quantity of dust under the glass today. I have been loving this phone really, but this is disappointing-especially since if I send it back I will likely get a refurb.
I did attempt a fix myself, slid out the keyboard and turned over the phone to remove the 2 screw covers and screws. Popped off the top plastic cap and attempted to slide the glass up and off. Glass wouldn't budge.
i could be wrong but most of the replacement DVPs that have been sent out are brand new units. if the dust is really annoying I'd go for a replacement.
has anyone written to dell?
did they correct this issue in the production?
I asked about this a while ago.. I got a new one from Dell.
I THINK looking at the phone and screen, the lint is getting in via the speaker hole at the top.
Also it looks like fine denim pocket lint.. how many of you with the complaint, wear denim and stick the phone in your front pocket?
Both my initial DVP from the WP7 launch (11/8) and my current one have dust under the screen. I tried getting a replacement from Dell last week, but the replacement locked up frequently. For now I'm sticking with dust rather than lockups.
I'm interested to know if others who have had their's for a few months are experiencing the same.

Not sure, but it could also be getting in from the back. There is tons of dust/lint from my pocket underneath the battery cover and battery.
the evidence is compelling
dell should stick to computers, where they have excellent service
if they want to manufacture phones then research first
i dont think they forgot about sealing the screen
Has anybody tried casings etc? Do these help keeping dust away? I have heard of invisible shield and otter box.anybody tried them?

I think it's just a flaw in the design. It happened on my original MS Store DVP and the December replacement.
I've got a few specks of dust under my screen as well. Super frustrating because I don't even use the DVP daily, it just sits at home for testing usually. Now I keep it in a ziplock bag because I'm a freak.
My brother's first unit had a ton of dust under it, but for the moment his new one is fine. He actually uses his everyday and it spends tons of time in his pocket.
Definitely a design flaw/ quality control issue but I won't send it in just to get a refurb back, I don't trust Dell enough.

gorilla glass scratches ??? YES!

Well i stratched mine ... actually my wife did. She picked a few shells from the beatch thru them in the bag where my phone was. Next thing that damn screen had scratches on it
Next day went and bought creen protector. I hate that because even if the screen is unbreakable, you can scratch it.
I do think that in normal use, that won;t happen but you you have a wife that loves sand ... and shells ... take care and good luck. I believe that sand will scratch that screen.
I would kill my wife
Gorilla glass is not unscratchable or unbreakable. Its advertised as stronger and less likely to scratch, but how much more stronger and scratch durable? My dell streak's gorilla glass shattered from a 3 foot faceplant. Granted it has a bigger surface area, it still shouldn't have shattered.
I never remove the factory screen cover until I have a skinomi or other type of protector ready to install.

There's also been three reported screen fractures. Two from falls, one from sitting on it. So it's definitely not unbreakable. I've got a Zagg Invisible Shield full body suit on mine. As far as encasing your phone in vinyl goes, it looks pretty good. It's dead if I drop it but at least it will die pretty.
http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield...es-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php
I stopped using screen protectors when I got a DHD and never had any scratches on it, nor have I on my SGS2. That said, I treat the phone like it's my baby! I suppose accidents can happen to anyone though.
Regards.
Having a screen protector will actually reduce chances of a glass shatter tremendously cause of the fact that the adhesive quality of any screen protector keeps the glass together making it less prone of shattering.
As far as scratches go, gorilla glass is definitely more resistant to scratches, but it never hurts to put a scratchguard on it, does it!

Most light scratches are usually the coating on top of screen not the actual glass.

Well, reading the posts in the accessories thread was 15 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Bottom line is people are looking for different things. No protector is totally invisible. You can make up your own mind.

And if my finger is oily THEN i can see the scratch.

Broke my Screen Glass

Sonofa B. I just got a grippy case for my Nexus, since they're so slick and difficult to hold.
Installed it last night and managed to drop my phone on the floor this morning... Broke the damn glass. There is a crack from the upper left corner to the middle of the right side.
Phone is still functional, but I'm still quite pissed. I drop my phone very rarely and I just got this a month ago to replace my crapped-out Evo.
: (
That's no good. I did the same a few months back.. I bought a used digitizer/lcd/housing combo for a NS4G on eBay for $60 and swapped it. It was very easy.

Just a small crack. Perhaps it can be held together by a screen protector.
I'm happy with no case ^^
Ouch...how could you manage it? Im wearing it lose in my pocket and it hasent even got a scratch yet o0
Slipped out of my hand and hit the hard, tiled floor.
Sorry mate, that sucks. The very day after you got the grippy case...
Same happens to me only 3 months old. Can't deal with broken screen. Had to get a one from insurance. I feel your pain.

My nexus fell on tiled floor 3 times and nothing happened to it
Now that I think of it, the case I put on the phone was likely the true root cause of the cracking.
I had to squeeze the phone quite hard to get the case around the phone. That may have stressed the glass enough to cause it to crack after a gentle fall.
Effin cheap POS ebay case... Wish there was an Otterbox Commuter for this phone.
I'm in the same boat...Sprint NS4G...I have only had it for a month. Samsung wants 160.00 with a 3 week turnaround...Ugh...
I checked ebay, but I could not find any listings for the NS4G, only i9023.

Does anyone know if the i9023 screen will work on the NS4G?
Keep us posted joelee. I've been too lazy to look for a screen replacement.
I just put on the screen protector that came with the case, in order to keep the glass together. Working well so far, but this matte anti-glare protector is cheap, rough, and makes my display look like ****. The matte cover I had for my Evo was much nicer.
On a side note, I haven't had very good luck with phones this year. Bought the refurb eBay Evo 4G in early March and the display and cpu temp sensor crapped out by September. Got this eBay Nexus to replace it, then I broke the screen!
Have you looked into a cell phone repair place? We have a place called Dr. Cell Phone here in Dallas. They were about 33% less than HTC and no shipping for my wife's Nexus 1 screen. It was done on the same day too.
Look up the trident case its par with otterbox I think except I pulled the protective screen covr out. Been using it for a while.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Trident cases are so bulky and ugly. I'm usually not so rough with my phones that I need a heavy duty case (my suspicion is that my case was what actually broke my glass). I'd rather retain the sleek, slim feel of the phone than double its size with a suit of armor.
Too bad there's not an Otterbox Commuter for the nexus - that case was perfect for my Evo.
Non- gorilla glass ;/
I have somewhat the same issue... my screen is cracked but everything is functional. i want to replace the glass... but do i have to replace the digitizer as well? i saw some glass for sale on ebay for 25 dollars
anyone just change the glass or you have to change everything from glass and digitizer and lcd?

I had the same issue. My screen was cracked but everything was functional. So I just went to Samsung repairs and fixed it for free(it's because my friend works at Samsung). You would probably need to pay somewhat expensive price for it.

I dropped my GN once, from 2 feet off the ground while uh using the bathroom, and it cracked the screen. Probably just bad luck.

Case or Raw Dog?

Simple question. Do you rock a case on the Note 3, or are you running it raw dog style?
I've now tried two cases, the Spigen Neo Hybrid and the UAG. Didnt like the Spigen at all. Love the storm trooper look of the UAG but that thing is nearly impossible to remove and it doubles the thickness of the phone. Plus, as a huge fan of the appearance of the Note3, I'm not sure I'd really like any case at all.
Thinking of throwing a tempered glass protector on the screen and calling it good.
I run it naked.
I love the look too, but not the feel. The leather appearance of the back looks great but gives very little grip. I have an otterbox defender and that same old patterned belt clip/holster that Verizon has been selling for years with their smartphones. I almost bought that spigen s-view case until I saw pictures of how it cracked one user's screen. I don't really like cases on my phone either but i'm not brave enough to go without a case. Samsung phones have been known to be kinda fragile.

It slips over the top and bottom, rather than back/front. So it will not pop off when you drop it.
And it has a kickstand on the back!

Case. Don't remember who makes it, but it's sturdy.

That's a Platinum brand case... sold at Best Buy. They are expensive... The markup is over 90%...employees pay sub $5

Yeah, I think I paid $30-ish for it. Had one for my last phone, an S3. Dropped it 3 stories off a balcony onto a sidewalk. There was a decent dash on the case, but no phone damage. Definitely worth it.

I love running the Note 3 naked. The only issue is that the back gets slippery at times. I had my first drop today ?. I like my Spigen case, but it's difficult to plug headphones in sometimes.

I run it naked as well. I'm actually more worried about scratching the display since I haven't dropped a phone in many years (knock on wood!). I've been contemplating getting the S view cover since it doesn't add to the thickness at all, but I use the phone so much it would be such a hassle to keep having to open it (and hold it open while using it).
I'm insanely ocd about the display because it somehow got scratched on my last phone (gnex) like a month after I bought it, just by putting it display side down on a table. It bothered the hell out of me for the following 23 months straight. Scratch resistant my ass.
I've tried a few glass screen protectors but they eventually peel away at the edges and it looks horrible. Suffice to say I'll never put ANY phone display side down again, and I always have a death grip on it when I'm using it...so I'm good to go.
Poetic Borderline bumper case because it's just enough protection without getting in the way. And it fits the slightly thicker Samsung wireless charging cover.

Spigen Glas-Tr slim to protect the screen and depending on my mood either a TPU or metal bumper. The back is like $10 to replace if it ever gets scratched up so I don't bother putting anything on the back except for a FlyGrip to help me one-hand the phone. I did order a white back so I go back and forth between them - the white back looks cool w a metal bumper.

That phone is why I won't buy anything without gorilla glass again. It got scratched on something in my pocket. Except there wasn't anything in my pocket.

I always thought the gnex had gorilla glass...??? That's why I'm so paranoid about this phone. I know it's obviously a much newer technology as far as the glass, but I'm paranoid nonetheless.
I would love to see a legitimate scratch test done. I could only find one test done and it was with a knife, and wasn't really that clear. When the hell would I ever scratch the display with a knife?!?
They need to do some common sense, real world testing...i.e. putting the phone in and out of jean pockets with the metal rivets on them, and with keys and other objects in the pocket. Also placing it display side down on different surfaces and moving it around, etc.
