so a while ago I accidentally dropped my phone down the carpetted stairs and it bounced all the way down from the top to tile floor at the bottom. that did not crack it. it was fine. so iwas impressed with the screen.
but this morning, just casually getting out of the car, I accidentally dropped it from no higher than 4 feet (less, I think) cause I'm not used to carrying around a larger device that is somehow also lighter, cause I moved to this phone from a samsung rant. but the samsung rant is super tough compared to this phone... I didn't drop the phone on an earthquake or something, I'm not sure how it proved to be so weak. definitely wouldn't name the glass after a gorilla. this was just one of those accidents that happen(I realize the stairs thing wasn't so much).
so I don't know if I have insurence on my device, but obviously it has been less than 30 days since I got it. so what should I do?
thanks!
Just because the phone has a Gorilla glass screen, it doesn't mean you can drop it where ever and it not shatter. You would think you would be a bit careful with a $500 device....
If insurance isn't already on your plan, adding insurance after the fact could be considered fraud, but you would have to pay the TEP $100 deductible for the replacement Epic.
Or there is currently a auction up for full parts set of a Epic on Ebay thats ending soon:
Epic Parts
it was an accident, and it's a phone. accidents happpen with everything.
not interested in fraud, but yeah I'll be getting a screen protector or at least a case soon. thanks for tthe ebay link.
It's been less than 30 days. There should be some type of exchange policy that covers stuff like this I think.
I'm not too sure, I'm pretty curious though.

Being a manager/ master tech of a service and repair center your pretty much out of luck..if you have insurance you only have to pay $100 deductible to get it replaced. the sprint store or 3rd party store where you got your phone wont take back a physically damaged phone as they wouldnt be able to return it. If you dont have insurance you can always go to a repair center and pay a $119 deductable there to get it replaced. GL and be careful w.your $500 toy

I also switched from a Rant! And I also...dropped my phone. I miscalculated how the phone would deal with my pockets and when I got startled walking on a trail it fell out. Scratched screen. :-( Not broken though.
Once you fix your phone or get a new one (as seems to be the consensus as your only legit option) if you want peace of mind I suggest getting a Squaretrade warranty. I did, and now I won't beat myself up for dropping it the next time. (I'm usually super careful...but...small hands and pockets?) You can usually find a 20% off or 30% off coupon code and mine turned out to be $115.20 for two years (less than $5/mo) and it covers accidents and water damage and stuff for a $50 deductible. Cheaper than Sprint also.
another option - go to http://www.globaldirectparts.com/ - they've got OEM replacement displays for the Vibrant for $72, suspect they'll be same price for the epic
changing it out isn't that difficult either - there are a couple of threads and videos on disassemblying the vibrant, i doubt it's much different on the epic, and in fact, probably easier cause you don't have to remove the circuit boards to get to the display on the epic
do a search on both youtube on dis-assemblying the epic
and the xda vibrant forum for "display screen"
at least one poster has already bought from them and confirmed they received an OEM sammy super amoled display
Just to throw this out there, I've had several smart phones and have messed with cases, screen shields, u name it. And what I use today (and what I've used for the last year) is, simply, this:

In the past, I've usually dropped my phone while pulling out of my pocket, or getting out of the car. Since using this, I've caught it a couple of times mid-air, but haven't had a ground impact since. ya.. they look a little homer, but u get used to it. It's a little bit tricky getting it into the epic, but it's got a designated spot (with case off) just above the volume buttons.
I don't like, manufacture these or have a "lanny" business, just fyi.
Sprint considers your phone insured after it makes a call on the line after the insurance plan is added. So if you can do that, you'd be golden, if it's covered.
You could possibly check the insurance contract to see if it covers or exempts preexisting damage. They only let you insure it within the first 30 days of activation, so I wouldn't see why they'd care. If they don't then technically it'd be fraud... though there's nothing on the phone saying the day/time it was dropped. Just sayin'.
If they will cover the preexisting damage, then it'd be $7 * 24 months (unless you can get the $4 EPRP) + $100 deductible.
This doesn't help you, sorry. But if you get the insurance from Best Buy, there is no deductible. They won't replace a phone that is lost or stolen, but as long as you have the broken bits of what is left of your phone they will replace it for free. I like that better than what Sprint offers.

Epic Fail: Broken Screen on drop to carpet from waist
Less then a week old, and no previous drops, and my screen is broken on a drop to the carpet as I fumbled an attempt to place it into my waist case. This Samsung Epic is junk if it doesn't hold up under this type of use. There are no scratches or dents on my phone, except for the broken screen. Samsung had better replace or recall the phone.

the epic has gorilla glass? what?
It is gorilla glass..but glass is glass..it i tougher but if it falls at a certain angle it will break..its up to luck...
That said if your in 30 days you can get insurance on it via csr and then bring it in the next day...
Gorilla Glass, Sapphire Glass, it's all the same. These hardened glasses are nice, so your keys don't scratch the screen. But the truth in how they make the glass (Extreme Heat hardens and messes with it on a molecular level, actually restructuring and shaping the molecules) actually makes the glass more brittle - thus more susceptible to shattering into a million tiny pieces.
Recap: Good for keys, bad for drops.
you can still put insurance on it. If you take it to sprint, even the sprint employs will tell you to put insurance on it, and call it in after a 1-2 weeks. Thats what they told me when I deleted my 4g rsa keys.
Thanks for the thoughts
Thanks for your thoughts. We'll see if Samsung wants to stand by their warranty and Samsung Epic 4g, or defend a suit in small claims court.
The folks at Best Buy pulled off the screen protector and the glass is fine. It appears the AMOLED screen is what split. The phone is in mint condition externally, and it is available for Samsung to inspect to learn why their product failed.
The initial response from Samsung is that "there's been no recall" on the product, so they're not going to fix it. I'm awaiting Samsung's ECS response: 1-800-726-7894
Here's my demand letter as a sample for those of you who might benefit...although I don't know how effective it will be, yet.

To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is to demand a replacement or repair to the above referenced defective phone. After a conversation with your customer representative in an attempt to have the phone fixed under the applicable warranty, your agent refused to facilitate the warranty fix.
The phone is available for your inspection. There is no physical damage to the phone except the interior screen cracked during normal wear and tear. The phone was less than a week in the owner’s possession when the screen broke. The phone was handled responsibly and the broken screen is a manufacturing or design defect.
Insurance to fix the product is available, however a deductible of approximately $100 applies.
IT IS HEREBY DEMANDED that Samsung either replace or repair the phone at no cost to the owner. Samsung may choose to cover the deductable, or Samsung may choose to fix or replace the phone under Samsung’s supervision.
Failure to meet this demand on or before September 24, 2010 will result in further legal action.
Your response is anticipated on or before September 24, 2010 by 5:00 p.m. at the contact information provided below.

Good luck.
It doesn't really matter if the glass shattered. A fall can still damage internal hardware just as well.
But out of curiosity. When you were talking to that Samsung customer service rep, did you mention any combination of the words "drop" "carpet" or "fumbled"? Because those will definitely get a request for warranty repair refused. The warranty (both expressed and implied) does not cover those words or related words being used in answering 'why did the screen break?'.

Wow, what happened? Just a straight soft drop, or did you sort of wave your arm and it slipped out for an extended flight? Onto what surface?
I've dropped mine in the house a couple of times (mostly onto carpet, but at least once onto tile) with no damage, thankfully.
I have not heard of anyone doing screen replacements on the DVP yet.
I'd probably pay the $250. You certainly can't use it as is, and you're going to be hard pressed to buy another smartphone for that. Or, you could always check eBay I suppose.

I walked up to my car, went to take my coat off so i grabbed the dvp out of my pocket and as i did it slipped out of my hand hit the plastic body kit just below the door frame and then hit the ground. from the kit to the ground is 6 inches. I didn't throw it, or intentionally drop it, it literally just slipped out of my hand.
And looking in to this I've been doing a little research on gorilla glass. Check these out. Ohh and btw we should all note that Gorilla glass is made by Corning, not some two bit company.

Square Trade's warranty is better and cheaper. If your new device is within 90 days of purchase, they'll cover it. They usually have 20-30% off coupon flowing around.
so much for the gorilla glass
I'd say that was a defective unit, gorilla glass wouldn't do that from such a short distance.
I've seen a video on youtube where a guy tests the gorilla glass on the Galaxy S and it took a drop from his shoulder ~6 feet to do that.
I'm fully aware the construction is different but the damage shouldn't have been that severe.

Gorilla glass is good at not being scratched too easily, but it isn't designed to withstand lots of sudden impact like dropping. This is why you see iPhones (which I'm sure has it) shattered to hell regularly.
This is the video I was trying to share and at 1:08 into the video they show gorilla glass bouncing (literally) though it does land flat and not on a corner, so not sure how much that makes a difference.
Corning - Gorilla Glass Werbespot
Plus today i was at work and had a few minutes to kill so with the plastic butt of a exacto blade i tapped a chunk of glass that wasn't broken and it shattered with a lot less force than some of the things they do in the video.
SO i'm not exactly 100% convinced it is gorilla glass on the DVP.

Actually the iPhone does not have Gorilla Glass. It's a reinforced and (supposedely) stronger material, but it is not the Corning product.

Doesn't really matter now does it. Slights phone is shattered. Mine too shattered from a fall from about mid thigh.
Dell would not replace it. TMO insurance would not cover it...well it would but only if I got a HD7 in return. So...broken is broken...regardless of what the video shows....

Do you still have pictures of the phone when it shattered? I've contacted Corning (ask for the gorilla glass group) and i've sent them the information and pictures of my phone and the story of what happened. If you want to contact them and do the same i'm asked them to investigate dell for falsely admitting to using a product that is possibly not what they say it is. I ordered my Dell in November, recieved it on Dec 21. It broke on Jan 4th. I ordered a new one on the 4th and recieved it at 8am on the 5th.
I then contacted Dell with pictures and stories by both phone and email. I recieved from them a screenshot of the post on the community site about replcing the Streak display...which basically said.....sorry... After 2 more phone calls...I gave up...it was a lost cause. Since I could afford the new phone, I didn't worry about it.
But...like it said...that was 4+ months ago. Any communication I do with either will be shut down because of time and the story will be lost. The value now is in hte historical evidence of the glass. Feel free to use the pic if it helps.
I'm so mad at DELL. This happened on the 7th and now almost a month later and they still can't figure out how to get a phone to me. It's so patherit it's almost laughable.
Before everyone hops on the "you dropped it" train. Let me first say that I've been a member here for a long time. If I drop a device its on me. I wouldn't even be posting here if that was the case.
Now let me explain.
I work in Datacenters where the temperature is somewhere between 60-70 fahrenheit. I bought my Xoom from Verizon around February. I've been using it every day. Never dropped, never abused. I even have that rubber back from Motorola and put it across the front when I put it in my backpack, in its own little sleeve.
Yesterday I was at the Datacenter doing some early morning emergency work. The tablet was on the floor, not over a vented tile, but just on the floor with its rubber back.
I then looked down and noticed a crack formed from about the middle left, to the upper right. I picked it up, ran my finger across it, and noticed its not all the way to the surface. I turned it on, the LCD works perfect, touch screen also works fine.
Set it down very carefully, and then I watched, and I mean watched a crack form from the bottom straight up to the top, and push through where the cracks meet. I even heard the glass cracking as it happened.
I can't imagine that a 65F temp would cause the screen to crack.
This morning I got on the horn with support, and this is the just of what motorola had to say.
Motorola's support response was as follows.
Physical damage voids the tablet’s warranty. You may opt to send the phone in for evaluation so the technician can determine if the issue can still be fixed. If it’s fixable, the repair cost of $199 plus applicable taxes will apply. However, if the tablet can’t anymore be fixed, it will be returned unrepaired and no charge will be made on your account.
The Lens Only Replacement covers damage to the display (such as a crack) and the LCD is not damaged. If there is damage to both the lens and the LCD the full Out-of-Warranty fee will apply. The out of warranty repair costs Out-of-Warranty $369 plus applicable taxes

Looks like something was dropped on it while it was on the floor. At those temperatures, normal glass may experience some shrinkage, but not enough to crack.
The temperatures mentioned are well within specs of Gorilla Glass BTW
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/sites/all/files/COR_GG_ProdSheet.pdf
To my extremely untrained eye, the damage does not look like what would happen if it fell or if something fell onto it. It looks like what would happen with a constant strain caused by a singular, slow-acting stress. I'd assume either REALLY cold temperatures on the floor or strain from objects inside your backpack using it as a lever.
I would start with researching Corning's Gorilla Glass. I think I read that it was developed in the 60s, and I always thought it a bit odd that it never found a marketable application until recently, especially given Corning's history of ups and downs as a business.
There are videos on the net demonstrating how unbelievably forgiving this glass is, but they were made to show it off for the smart phone application. I'm wondering what kind of crazy temper it must have, and if such a large size as a tablet lens just lends itself to a greater chance of getting an imperfection that might cause this.
Unfortunately, I also think you're screwed no matter what your research turns up. Your story (particularly about actually watching and even hearing the second crack form) reads like a complete nightmare. I really feel for ya!
In an effort to offer something more than just a condolence, my dad told me about some place in California that he sent his PDA to replace the capacitive touch screen. This was a couple years ago. I forget how much it was, but it was little more than half of what Blackberry (our whoever he bought it from) wanted to fix it. Point is, you may be able to get it fixed cheaper.

I sincerely wish you good luck. Keep us posted.
If gorilla glass is a Corning product you may also want to contact them. Get to a product engineer and tell them what happened. They may provide insight into the issue and help with your efforts to get Moto to replace it at no cost.

I'm a mechanical design engineer by training and by trade. I currently do mechanical designs for a medical company.
Let me just tell you what is wrong with the picture.
1. Given the material combination. The gorilla glass has the lowest coefficient of expansion in this device. If you dont understand what this means, it basically just means that damage due to a sudden change of temperature should never happen by design.
2. There are assembly mitigations to help the design even further. One common technique is simply doing the assembly at a stress-free temperature.
3. Common industry practice to qualify a device to production is temperature cycling exposure. Consumer test spec for this is 55C to -20C within 30min for up to 1000 cycles.
4. Looking at your picture, it looks like the crack began with a defect which is on the external side of the tablet. Furthermore, compression of the glass due to rapid temp change would yield the failure along the short side of the glass but not the length; once the glass fails on the short side it would not continue to crack on the long side because the stress is already relieved.

I disagree with point 4. It's entirely possible the defect was in the center. Even if it were not, the first crack (presumably from a defect) could cause the second one as both pieces are now effectively defective (didn't plan that wording, lol).
There are other variables/possibilities that haven't been discussed, such as the glass actually cracking from one side but splitting from the other, the actual crack not having been noticed until it split (which could have been only an instant later). The adhesive around the bezel probably holds the most potential for inconsistencies from product to product as well as how it's applied around each one.
As far as expansion, the coefficients are for materials with no detected defects. Toss a microscopic piece of debris (carbon, gas, slag...) into the part and that goes out the window, especially of anything crystalline in structure.
Regardless, as someone who treats his Xoom like a museum piece, if the OP says he didn't abuse it to the point of being downright dumbfounded about how this happened, I believe him.
I think most of us agree it is very unlikely to be a temperature variance problem. 65 is not even particularly cold. If 65 were a problem a lot of the early adopters in northern climes would have had issues due to late winter temperatures. I don't remember how cold it was but I know I was still wearing my winter jacket, so below 65.
It is possible the rapid cooling played a part but assuming no physical stress was involved there must have been some flaw in your xoom that made it inevitable.
I'm just saying thermal expansion cannot play a role in the long crack. That crack propagated from a sharp defect which I can see on the glass already.
It will be hard to convince the short crack is caused by thermal expansion either (as I mentioned first due to the TCE of the material combination) because again the initial defect is in the middle of the glass but a thermal expansion failure should fail first at the material interface.
Just saying, base on the picture it is hard to convince moto the crack did not began from an external defect. I'm not saying you caused the defect, it might have been your pet walking in the glass or whatever and you never notice it...
When my xoom was delivered the outside air temperature was less than 5 C.
No tempefature related problems here.

If it was me they had better film that cause it be good enough for oscors. Whisper it will OK. Ups return shipping label is on its way. Just hang in there. Holding it close as time slowed down and stuff. Epic

After battling Motorla for the last week, I spoke to them on the 6th, my last reponse was "Fine, I'll pay for the stupid thing. I'll call tomorrow with a different credit card" (They don't take discover, and thats all I had on me at work). The 7th, when I wake up, I find that the device has been shipped.
So this morning I look out my door and there it is. Open it up, and guess what?
Your device can be repaired but with a repair fee. However because we could not reach you via phone, or email, we have sent the device back unrepaired.

Which I find even more frustrating since I had spoke to them nearly every day, and they even called me. My job requires me to answer the phone, and email. There is no way in they were not able to get a hold of me.
So now I sit here, wondering what to do next. I do know this was my first Motorola, and it will be my last.
BTW, thanks everyone for posting the tech responses. I can't imagine anything dropped on it. I was there by myself, sitting in an enclosed area, with everything bolted into racks. When I first noticed the crack, the rubber back that I bought from Moto was on the front, I could see the small crack in the upper left due to the camera opening in the rubber.
So it happened while the screen was covered.
Well I'm going to write a letter to Motorola, and then probably try Verizon, chances are I'll just buy an iPad (I know, the shame, but at least I can walk into an Apple store.)
Thanks
Apple defiantly has better repair services
Hi
So here I am, it just happened to me, the back cover of my Z2 self cracked ! I left it on a shelf, inside it's pouch (Adore June case), and when I took it a few minutes later, the back was all cracked.
The phone didn't fell, nio shock at all, nothing. Temperature was ambiant, about 20°c, without any big variations.
So I'd say, for a piece a of technology I bought exactly 555 € 2 month ago, it is just unbelievable, unacceptable !
It was my first Sony phone, and it will be the very last.
Other than that, I was really satisfied with it.....until it decides to harm itself !
Now the good part of the story is, when I contacted the seller, Purnima Digital, they oriented me to their warranty service, who reacted very well and fast. I was about to send them the phone, for free, for an expertise, but when I called them, they advised me to wait, because they already had hundreds of Z2 with the same issue, and for now Sony hadn't accepted to repair under warranty !!!!
They told me they were negotiating with Sony, with the help of a consumers association, to make Sony accept their production deffective issues.
So voilà my story with Sony. I will keep you informed about the outcome, hopefully Sony will take their responsibility.
As soon as I will have my Z2 repaired, first thing I will sell it. And never again I will hear about Xperia phones !
I have a Z2 Tablet, which for now is very well and doesn't seem to want to Crack it self,.....
I have a IPhone 5s for the work, and i will stick to it now. no matter what we think about Apple vs Android, at least I will not have these problems with the 5s.
Good luck with yours !

I'm perfectly happy with my Z2 that I bought right after it was released in my country in May. I have had no issues with it whatsoever and it's still without a scratch even without a case. That being said, if you have accidentally left your phone in direct sunlight it could cause the backplate to crack due to heat. If that is not the case then you've been really unlucky and for that I empathize with you. Good luck with your phone and whatever you choose to do with it if/when you get it back.
In that case here is the next question..what kind of glass is the back + the front one? It would be nice if they start making dragontrail glass for the back at least... :/ Ive heard that many Z Z1 Z2 users suffer that problem.Im quite affraid for mine too :/

Yep ; FYI, i had put on the back the NILKIN plastic film provided when you purchase the Tempered glass pack for the front panel....i was sure the back didn't need a tempered glass as well, and i was confident the plastic one would be OK, knowing the phone will be in a case...
Well now i know that it was not sufficent at all.
It was surely bad luck for me with this unit, even if there are many other users in the same position, but anyway i advise you all to put a tempered glass protection on the back as well.
The anti shatter film was better than any tempered glass protection.
Due to it's malleability impacts get softened.
Replacing the back is pretty cheap <$20 and easy though. Good thing it's not the front...Cost me 100 to buy a replacement LCD.
My screen self cracked yesterday.
After about 30 minutes I had an rma filed with a label on the way, hopefully the techs can see this wasn't an issue of "accidental damage " instead a fault in the design.
Hoping it's fixed and sent back!

My screen cracked itself, too - Sony Germany refused the warranty!
I hope they will get this sorted, soon! It's unacceptable!!
My Z2 has faulty back cover also. It's not cracked, but is not glued properly so the edge near the USB port kinda pops out. I can press and it sticks back but then it pops out again after a while. I doubt it's waterproof. The phone is less than one month old.

This is that kind of phone that needs a case 100% if you want it to be protected and safe for a longer period of time. ( I am from that kind of persons that are using the phone naked (its a damn Z series..u took the phone for its classy look too,but here i can't risk anymore :/ )) Screen protectors from both sides wont save it too.Ive read alot and..too much ppl complaining from cracked Z2s.Too sad that Sony didn't put a Dragontrail/Corning Gorilla..front and back glass.
The back glass on mine self-cracked. It has been in a case since an hour after I received the phone. It sits most of the day on my desk at work, or on the kitchen bench at home. Last week I discovered a single crack across the back panel.
I took it to the Telstra shop and they said Sony will not accept warranty claims for physical damage. I am going to follow up with Sony as this sounds ridiculous. The phone is not fit for purpose. None of the smartphones nor PDAs I have had (going back 14 years now) have ever suffered any damage or cracks.

it doesn't??? OMG that sucks!!! even an original Sony one?
Had my Z2 self crack also the other day... used it and it was fine, checked back half an hour later and the screen was shattered. The shatter pattern is very similar to the pics posted at the beginning of this thread except mine is on the digitizer. It's obviously not from an impact/drop (I know this because I didn't drop it and the chassis is unmarked) but more so because of the pattern of the crack, no bullseye or spiderweb. Even more so because the phone wasn't moved during the time when it cracked....
Needless to say I was extremely annoyed, luckily I had the in box screen protector on so it didn't leave shards of glass all over the place. Just need to decide what to get next, does seem like this is an issue with only a few Z2's, my gf and sister have z2's which theyve dropped god knows how many times and their glass is unmarked, mine on the other hand has never been dropped. Anyway not sure whether to just wait for the Z3 instead of getting another Z2 (don't think I could live without a waterproof phone so that eliminates pretty much everything apart from Sony)
I am from Croatia. My first Z2 was foulty too. It was heating quickly, back glass cracked, wather demaged microfon and wather was all around camera. At first after 5 days I sent it service repair refused to change the phone claiming that this was physical damage. Then I asked for explanation and yelled on them and then they called me after 3 weeks to tell me that they are going to give me new one after long consultation with Sony in Europe.
With this new Z2 I don't have any problems and no quick heating.

Assuming you purchased it with a credit card, check with your card company, first. Many have 90-day accidental damage coverage automatically applied to your purchases.
Thanks all for your replies. I bought the Moto Care and already put in a claim. They told me it should go through for full replacement, just needed to wait for the extended warranty to show in the warranty department's system. It didn't show as purchased in My Stuff for a few hours, but it does now so hope to get the approval soon.

Ok, now i understand.
There is no video of drop test or any other durability tests done on the Moto X Style on YouTube or anywhere.

Finally got the replacement last week (Monday 10/12) but Motorola really messed up/lost the original claim (won't go into the gory details) which killed ~10 days with no action whatever, but then after escalating to the stateside support tier was quickly given a code to order a brand new phone through Motomaker which I did on 9/30 with expected del'y on 10/16, so luckily it arrived a few days early but the whole thing was frustrating and took over 3 weeks. Returned the damaged unlocked rooted phone to TX with a prepaid label they emailed me, which I'd returned to stock with the tool provided here (many thanks, worked great!) plus replacing the unlocked logo, which was received back with no issues.
Had an Incipio Octane case on hand when the replacement came, which I think gives much better protection than the stock bumper does, and would also use a screen protector if they didn't all apparently suck so far, so am waiting for one that sounds decent. Incidentally, you can change the Motomaker configuration of the replacement when ordering with the code, even add wood/leather if you didn't have it originally (I didn't) and just pay the $25, but I just went with a different back color which you can't see anyway with the case. Was always careful with my phones and never had one break from minor falls, but maybe the larger size/weight makes this one more vulnerable, so now I'm paranoid of dropping it which will probably make me more likely to!
Having had Gorilla glass 3 and 4 on phones....I think Gorilla glass 3 (which we have on the Pure) breaks easier than 4 in drops, but doesn't scratch as easily as 4 does. I have dropped and cracked a 3 screen but never scratched one.
Whereas I have never broken a 4 screen but it sure did get a scratch within the first week of ownership on S6 Edge.
I wonder how "shatter proof" the new Droid Turbo 2 screen will really be??

That's good to know, thanks. I was a bit envy of the Nexus 6p having GG4 but since I'm more worried about scratches than me shattering it maybe it's a good thing the MXPE has GG3. It reminds me of the long-heated sapphire vs. mineral crystal debate regarding wristwatches: Scratch-proof vs. shatter-proof.
I bought the extended warranty for $19.99 but I don't think I'm gonna break my screen so I skipped Moto Care. I have an Octane case on it so it has pretty good grip. Perhaps I should keep my phone on a holster or in my pocket all the time and use an earpiece with all calls just to be on the safe side?
Same 2 ft drop - refrain if you can

I think they need to change the name to *****-Ass Glass.
I tell you, if the new Turbo 2 actually has glass that cannot be shattered (yah right) then I believe all phones will move in that direction. Unless they scratch easily! Of course the insurance companies that make a fortune on broken screens may object! Tough noogies Square Trade, and Assurion!
Today I bobbled my 12-day-old replacement for the first cracked-screen phone that began this thread, and it fell farther than the first time (maybe 3.5 vs 2.5 feet), hitting first on the top right corner then bouncing up while twisting mostly onto its front before landing fairly squarely face down on the concrete garage floor. Still has no screen protector yet, so I picked it up expecting the worst but can't find a mark or scratch anywhere on it after removing the Incipio Octane case. Whether just a lucky fall or it would've broken without the full protective case (was using stock bumper the 1st time), I can't say but think it likely made enough difference. It noticeably bounced a couple inches which didn't happen with the bumper although it was a lesser distance, but I believe the denser more-rubberized case material is designed to do that.
I do feel that this phone's size makes it more prone to dropping, not that I didn't occasionally drop my Nexus 4 (w/Diztronic case) but it was so much easier to grip or quickly tuck into any ole pocket such that there were fewer opportunities. Thus far I'm habitually handling the new phone like the smaller N4, but now must train myself to be more careful at least in certain situations.
This just reminded me of a major flaw in motos design. There is no frame around the screen to protect it. The glass is edge to edge, so the only protection would be a big bulky case; which is a no go for me.
This happened to my moto x 2014, broke the screen froma very small drop. Never had an issue with the original moto x, it's survived many drops without damage
Best of luck this go around
People complain if the bezels are too big or small it seems. The casemate bumper is not bulky and provides some protection.

Hey I'm thinking of getting this over the Nexus 5X mostly because of the JetCash deal till the 31st, but you mentioned that you had yours replaced even with the boot loader unlocked? They didn't care at all? That is my last contention. Coming from a Nexus, it was easy as heck to just restore the phone relock and send it back for RMA. As for insurance I think I might get SquareTrade though I'm considering Moto Care, but scared of the support headache in general that I've read all over reddit. I've also never ever cracked a phone screen or really any screen ever, and the this X made it seem like its more likely but still safe than sorry. As for Android updates I'm sure they won't be too quick to ditch this one as it has zero connections to carriers here.
btw I bought the phone right when BestBuy had it, I basically tested it for a week and returned it. I really liked it but it was only 16gb with 9gb left. I can away really happy. Also I like to use my phones without case, so I might put a skin on the sides for grip but that's it, the phone is quite large as is.
Hi,
Basically the camera lens cover of my XZ2P is getting scratched more and more (idk why). My question is that are the scratches on the glass/plastic cover or is it on a coating covering the glass/plastic. If the latter is true, that would mean, I could potentially remove the coating and the camera cover would be unscratched, right?
Going to a service center is not an option as in my country they do not offer assistance with the XZ2P.
Please help.
Thank you

Thanks for your reply! You helped me out a lot. Yes, it is the same thing only worse. What I do not understand is that even though the coating is getting messed up, the pictures are still coming out decent/normal. I am however concerned that if the coating gets totally ruined, the pictures will be messed up. I have seen some videos where people have taken their coatings off using spirits/alcohol but I am still unsure if I should do this since there will be no protection left!
Thanks again bro!

I'm having this exact same issue with my XZ2P. Delamination of the camera glass coating. My issue occurred within 3-4 months of purchase. I have been without the phone for 2-3 months now while I argue with Sony UK and SBE (the authorised repair centre) about the fact that it's a defective materials issue and not physical damage as they keep claiming to avoid a warranty repair. They continue to refuse their contractual warranty obligations. They are demanding I pay an inspection fee to have it returned to me without the issue even repaired.
So frustrating that Sony expect to charge so much for a flagship device like this but not stand by and repair it when it's defective within months of purchase.
I've always looked after the phone, it's been in a case since opening the box and never dropped or had anything near the camera glass to cause a scratch. There's not a scratch on the thing. Just this frustrating blemish on the camera glass from the defective and delaminating coating.
No wonder Sony had to retrench from the world market with poor quality from a flagship device like this followed up with no support what so ever.

Unbelievable but also not surprising, only had my XZ2 Premium back for a month post camera glass coating repair, and it’s already delaminating on the replacement housing. What a joke! How did Sony let such a bad design on an expensive flagship get through R&D? I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for the repair given this second materials failure in a short period of time. I’ll not be bothering with another warranty repair given the debacle last time. I’ll be stripping the coating off like others have done once it gets bad enough. So disappointed with Sony.
So the camera glass coating wore on my XZ2 Premium so badly in just a few months that the camera couldn't take a photo without being blurry with a white haze. I tried stripping the coating off with rubbing alcohol but it made the haze worse after completely removing the top layers. However I can confirm that polishing the camera glass with a fine cerium oxide compound removes all of the faulty coatings and binding layers from the glass so it's clear again. My XZ2 Premium can now thankfully take decent photos. It's a bit ridiculous that I had to go to such an extent to repair the phone myself to make the camera actually functional again. I certainly wasn't interested in fighting with Sony UK over a second warranty claim for such a poorly manufactured flagship device.
Hi,
This has happened to my XZ2 Premium and I'm not sure what to do. I have experienced Sony's/SBE's warranty repair process on a previous device and it was not a good experience so reluctant to send them my phone.
Can I ask how you used the cerium oxide? Does it need to be used with a small polishing wheel on something like a Dremel?
Many thanks in advance.
I guess you could contact the relevant Sony support email for your world region and explain the defect and the issues that other users have faced and see if they can guarantee a repair under warranty for you device and push the issue prior to sending it in for repair.
Failing that, I used the cerium oxide with a Drexel and felt polishing disk. I purchased carpro ceriglass as it’s a gentle formula you can use by hand on car windscreens. It did a good job, very minor surface swirls can be seen under the right light so I could go one step further with and ultra fine cerium oxide compound but the camera looks and works just fine. To protect the metal trim and glass back of the phone, I covered it with masking tape and used a clean sharp blade to cut out the hole around the camera glass before polishing. Makes clean up easier also. You need to keep working it a little bit at a time and keep the slurry wet and reapply as needed until you reach the result you’re after.
You can also up a replacement oem back housing from witrigs for a reasonable price. It’s a fairly straightforward swap out if you watch their repair videos, you just need to purchase the finger scanner sticker and lcd supporting frame sticker to put the phone back together properly with new adhesives.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I have submitted photos of the defect on my device to Sony UK support and awaiting their response.
Failing that I'll have to consider the cerium oxide option as replacement back covers in the uk are nearly £100!
Many thanks
This happened to mine, and it was accepted for repair under the warranty.
