[Q] gorilla screen on the epic...? - Epic 4G General

i read that all galaxy s phones come with gorilla screens. but now i'm beginning to doubt that the epic has it.
when i had the evo, i was able to scratch the screen with coins, silverware, etc and nothing would scratch it. of course i wasnt putting a lot of pressure on it, but enough to simulate everyday scratching.
i tried the same with the epic, and now i have a scratch (yeah, i know, dumb)
so my question : is it? or is it not?

Yes its gorilla glass, means its scratch resistant, not scratch proof, I have a clarivue on mine just to be safe.
Sent from my Epic 4G

It is, I've done similar tests with no scratch. That's strange that yours doesn't
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

the press release said that "Galaxy-S phones" have Gorilla Glass.
It did not specify the American models... but they have the same screens as the European model so it was just assumed.

well it's a minor minor scratch, but knowing that it's there, it bugs/saddens me.
now i can't return it... i was thinking of switching back to the evo....

you got bored, tried to perform a scratch test on your phone and it turned into a epic fail and now youre trying to hopefully revert to the slower evo because of this? Are you kidding me!

yes and no. i was being very careful with the epic in case i didnt like it so i could return it. and having done the coin test on my evo, i figured it'd have the same results as the evo.
i was really proud of the gorilla screen on the evo. (made some chump change proving my friends wrong, that it wouldnt get scratched) but you're right. after playing with the epic, i'm leaning more towards keeping it. i just hope that the dev's for the epic are just as good/quick/etc as the evo dev's
but the reason i was thinking of switching back to the evo had absolutely nothing to do with the scratch btw.

[Q] Screen Scratched?

So I just noticed a decent sized scratch on my fascinates screen.
It's in the middle of the screen, and I can feel it with a fingernail. The phone spends all day in my pocket, and I baby it, so I'm surprised. Never been dropped or anything.
Though I know it's morally ambigious, I was thinking about returning it to verizon under the guise of faulty GPS/not getting a lock so I could get a new one with a clean screen.
Anyone know of any reason this wouldn't work?
If I do this or not though, will def be getting a screen protector.
reasons it wouldn't work would be if the rep there knows the gps problem affects all fascinate units so they may only offer swapping to a different model. Also, the devilish giggling sounds you make as you try to scam them might give you away.
good luck!
Worth a shot. I'll have to return to stock and see. Nothing really to lose beyond having to re root if they say no.

On a related subject, whats the best screen protector? I would like one that covers the entire front. Also, I thought these screens were hard to scratch except with sand? I have no scratches yet.
I find this hard to believe....these phones have gorilla glass....same as iphone.....go google it and watch some youtube videos of people stabbing their phones. I will never use crappy screen protector again.....i swear they are a scam. Just my two cents.

umm teeharding... gorilla glass isn't indestructable :/ I'd like to see a youtube video of someone rubbing sand paper on a display and then we'll talk.
how are screen protectors a scam when they tend to the need for which you bought them? sure we can say they are costly, but thats just one of those inequalities in life we should learn to deal with in a capitalistic society. :/
I can assure you that it is possible to scratch Gorilla Glass, as I did it.
What exactly did it? Couldn't tell you, but I was careless and overconfident in the GG, and had it in my pocket with keys and my headphones, and it was scratched up in a few weeks, though only one scratch was deep enough to feel with a fingernail.
Since I've gotten the new phone I decided to order the realook screen protector from amazon, and it has its own pocket, free of anything else. besides my wallet (leather, no metal or edges).
Trust me, I don't need to google the greatness of GG, I've had my own real life test done, and it failed. Phone was never dropped or handled roughly.
Yikes. Glad I got an Invisible Shield installed. So how is the new GPS? I'm considering returning mine as I also have GPS issues. It scared me when I read that it may be a hardware issue on these forums today.

If its a known issue with the unit it specifically means they will NOT exchange the device. And def not for another one, given its the 1st one.
You will be told to wait for them to release an update that "fixes" the issue, and at which point, it doesn't, THEN the device is swapped out, for another identical model.
You can try returning the phone at that point, and depending who you get or what not, they may waive the restock fee, especially if you point out that you're returning a phone for an issue thats CLEARLY not your problem, and mention that the rep who sold you the phone didn't point it out.
@ [OP] How did the realooks do for you?
good day.

Just got my Epic :) Now what?

Ok, Just got my epic in the mail. It's charging as I type. I ordered a Realook screen protector immediately and I'll probably keep the one that ships with it on there until that one comes in.
So my question is...What should I do first? I want to customize it as much as possible to keep the battery life as long as possible. Should I root it? What roms do you guys recommend? I'm waiting on a case with a kickstand to come out...so i'll baby it for the first month I guess.
Definitely Root it!!! So many benfits with rooting (Free Wifi Tether,No ADS, Custom roms, Kernals, Get rid of crapware like sprint stuff and more.
Im running andromeda rom with andomeda kernal. I couldnt be happier.
This might be a silly question but if I root it before I activate it will that affect the activation process?
The reason I ask is because I don't have a screen protector yet so I was just going to continue using my other phone until it came in. I know its ridiculous, but I just want to make sure I don't give myself any opportunity to scratch the screen on this expensive phone.
So I'll just play with it until I can actually start making phone calls. Hilarious...adults with their toys.
Just realize the epic uses Gorilla glass.. Unless you continually drop stuff and try hard to scratch the screen your not going to be able to.

1st?? Why not make sure the phone works as advertised? My suggestion is to check how the well your GPS and other features actually work. Once you get a good feel for the phone, then the rooting should start...

I am so accustomed to rooting, modding, or putting a rom on every smart phone I have ever had that it only seems natural to start that way from the get go. Besides, I'm fairly confidant that stock performance is going to pale in comparison to what I'll see once I've customized it a bit.
But, you are right I'll give it a go stock for a little bit (a day ?) to get a feel for the device before I start slicing and dicing it.

So, I understand that Gorilla glass is supposed to make this thing nearly indestructible, but I've read around these very forums that people are still getting scratches on the screen. Might as well protect my expensive overpriced phone....Sometimes I think who the heck cares since I have insurance and why bother with a case either?

Getting this cheapo ebay case for the time being until they release a functional case with a kickstand that I like. I read a review on this site here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797833 that gave me some hope in buying the triangular shape case. *Crosses Thumbs* Hoping it will hold me over.
I scratched my screen within a week of getting the phone. I customarily leave my keys in the same pocket as my phone. I did this for 2 years w/ an iphone and didn't have a single scratch so i figured the epic would fare similarly. 1 week and there were little micro scratches all over the epics screen. I had other problems with that phone so sprint exchanged it for another one and i promptly got a screen protector. Hopefully i'm the exception and not the rule.

I do the exact same thing...I constantly put my phone in my pocket with my car keys. I notice every little scratch...they gnaw at my subconscious even when i'm not using the phone lol. I thought the Iphone and epic both had gorilla glass...odd that you would scratch one and not the other under similar circumstances.

Sorry man, it's the truth. I'm not flaming the phone or anything, and i'm pretty sure my experience is a rare one. But yes. I'm a fool who keeps his keys in the same pocket as his phone. Miraculously there were no scratches on the iphone3g after about 1.75 years. In case you think i'm somehow trolling the epic you need to realize i disliked everything else about the iphone and even paid the early termination fee to switch to the epic. BTW beside that one negative experience w/ the scratch and wobbly screen (the same unit) i love this phone.
So back on topic. I recommend a screen protector of some sort.

I'm probably going to root it today...I'll ask again does anyone know if rooting will hinder activating this phone?
Otherwise, I'm just using it as a PMP for now .
Rooting won't hinder activation, however using an aosp rom might. So if u just root and use noobs rom or just leave it stock rom u will be fine.

Thanks! I might just wait then to activate it first before rooting because the main reason I wanted to root is to install a custom kernal/rom.
Battery life sucks on stock so far by the way...I'm getting about 7 hours a day with light usuage before I have to recharge. Admittedly, I have not done much to tweak it, but its a shame that a stock offering from sprint can't hold a whole days charge. I mean what if I wasn't as inclined to rooting/tweaking...I would have to live with the phone like this? Definitely, unacceptable. If I don't see at least a days charge with some light usage on a custom rom/kernal I might consider waiting for another droid phone with a better battery life. I have read some positive results from people with custom roms achieving the battery life I'm looking for so I'm hopeful.

[Q] Strength of the Display?

Just how strong is the display on the MT4G? I used a screen protector on my MyTouch3G and swore I would always use one on my phones. I've had my MT4G now for just over two days, and I have not put one on my phone. The case I bought came with one, and while attempting to put it on the display I messed up and ruined it (got dirt particles on the sticky side that I couldn't remove).
So, I'm curious to know how strong the display is on these phones. I remember hearing that they are supposed to be much stronger than previous/existing phones, and wonder if a screen protector is really need on it.
Thoughts?

There are rumored reports that the screen on the MT4G is Gorilla Glass. But the actual materials used in the screen aren't officially listed. One would think, if this were true, it'd be advertised front and center.
Regardless, we do know that it is at least a glass screen. Personally, I've never used a screen protector on my devices for any extended period of time. I did shortly after I first got my Nexus One, but ended up getting rid of it. One of the design features of the MT4G is the chrome bezel around the screen, which means that even if you lay it fast down, the device is resting on that bezel instead of the screen itself.

Are you sure it's a glass display? I don't remember seeing it on T-Mo's site advertised as such.

So if it does have a glass display, I'm really curious to know just how durable it is. Will it scratch with light wear/tear? Will it be easier to crack/break if kept in a pocket? Just wondering what the pros/cons are with it having a glass display.
I am so tired of typing this in 65 different threads...
I see no diff in screen strength between the mt4g and n1, haven't ever had a screen cover for either of these devices... yet I destroyed the screen on my (first) g1 and needed protectors for that device...

No doubt it is likely the same material as the HTC HD2, and that one is strong. The T-Mobile sales clerk who sold me my HD2 took his own HD2 and a razor cutter and scraped the screen several times and not even a hint of a mark or angel hair scratch was there. I have aggressively used my HD2 for almost a year and have not had any scratches on it at all...that is until my cat tried to gain quick traction at one end of it laying on a bed trying to scram away. I swear a cat's claws become as hard as diamond when they want traction. It put a super fine scratch on the screen at the light sensor extending down about half an inch. Hard to see but I can see it in the correct light.
Nevertheless, normal, respectful handling of it won't be a problem.
The thread below this one contains an almost identical post by me... I give the same response every time anyone mentions gg on the mt... 65 is a gross exaggeration but still... dig a little...
The poster above me is the op in the thread I'm referring to...

Well, thanks for the info you provided, but I have to say that the mentioning you speak of is buried in a thread about someone being a new MT4G owner. The thread isn't specific to just the strength of the display, which is why I created it so it stands out as its own topic.

While you're certainly entitled to your belief in the strength of the screen as you indicated earlier in this thread, from what authority has it been bestowed upon you to preach "NO GG ON HTC", as you put it, roughly 65 times on these boards, while they're are others equally entrenched in the opposite camp?
ummmm because i asked corning and they told me.... i spoke to a recruiter, advertisement and marketing rep, and R&D rep this weekend in ABQ NM...
they (all 4) seperatly told me HTC is NOT a client, and they would love nothing more than to change that....
.
Seriously, let's just get this thread back on topic please. I only wanted to know how strong the damn screen is. Screen protector or not? Right now I'm not using one on there and probably won't put one on, unless someone believes it's truly necessary on this phone.

Well it's not that far fetched. To this day, I have no way of explaining what happened to a buddy's old laptop. I was with him one time when he closed it, then a couple hours later he opened it up and the screen was broken. Nothing happened to it inbetween. Then again, it was a Dell... Now gorilla glass should technically be better, so this may have just been a defective unit. It's not the first time I've heard of a defective screen on the A500, however it's the first I heard of the spontaneous breaking glass. There's a first for everything

I once had a windshield on a rental car crack.
I did not even drop it on the floor and it cracked!
Seriously, nothing hit the windshield, it just had a defect, a weak point or a pressure point that caused the crack.
So I suppose all rental cars must have defective windshields.

Siii screen dead on first drop from pocket

GUYS,
PLEASE BEWARE, the Galaxy S3 is no where as sturdy as the S1 which i previously owned or a S2.
Today it just fell off from my pocket and see what happened to the screen :-(
I had dropped my previous S1 a million times in the period of 2 years and not a single scratch
I am going to give it in on warranty, pathetic stuff from samsung
please everyone take care and use a casing.
Yikes
That's annoying. Hope you get it fixed mate.
I wonder if Samsung does that dirty trick of logging out the G sensor to detect whether it's been dropped or not and not accept warranty repairs based on it.
It was all fine after the drop. I used it for about 30 min. Then when i woke up in the morning, the screen was like this
it was a very subtle drop, this is pathetic quality and should be covered under manufacturer defect
Warranty don't cover clumsiness
G-sensor isn't a dirty trick to see if phone is dropped its proof
Sending back for warranty repairs saying you didn't drop it is a dirty trick
If you drop your phone a million times I strongly suggest phone insurance and a otter box case

To be fair, its pretty reasonable to expect that someone would at some point in a two year period drop a device that they will likely be carrying about with them ALL the time and removing it from and replacing it in their pocket frequently.
Just yesterday my s3, having only got it on monday, slid off the arm of my sofa because every surface of it is glassy smooth and bounced off the edge of a wooden table. Luckily it was unscathed but it is not unreasonable to expect a device of this nature to be able to withstand such an accident.
There is a certain amount of luck involved here though because obvioisly even the lightest tap at the right angle and position could shatter a screen.

If i am paying this amount of money for a phone i would expect it to survive a fall or 2.

In the 6 months that i had my S2 i dropped it twice and Thank GOD nothing happened to it.. i am careful with my phone but in the end i am just human and it is quite possible for the phone to fall.
Do you want a slim sexy phone that is fragile, or do you want a sturdy phone like this?

it was a very subtle drop, this is pathetic quality and should be covered under manufacturer defect

With today's technology and what it costs is the minimum that can withstand drops of at least 50 cm like my RAZR .........
If im not mistaken it seems as if all the white ones are the ones with the faulty issues... the cracked screens, the exploding phone, dead screen... dont you think that might be the reason they're releasing the white at a later time? to perfect it a lil more...i read something where that they had to redo the pebble blue because of some issues and maybe they're redo'ing the white version...hmmm makes sense....:good:
Unlucky mate, hope it gets fixed. I am fairly certain that my phone is going to get dropped sooner or later, simply because it's so big (even more so in a case) that I can't hold it securely in one hand and operate it properly at the same time.
Tbh I'm going to keep hold of it until the rumoured multiple Nexuses come out later in the year and then maybe sell it on to get something slightly smaller.

no. I think since the pebble blue was delayed due to Samsung's color issue, the bulk of what was immediately available were the white phones. Then when a few units had problems, they happened to be white.
My white one fell out of my hoody jacket as I was running for the bus, I was lucky that it landed on the cement, not the grass or I wouldn't have noticed it. Three corners have massive damage and there paint scraped off, it really did hit the ground hard. But the screen is perfect

...or how about something that does both like the Galaxy S2
I agree that if you drop your phone you only have yourself to blame if it breaks but having said that i also believe a device like this should be able to withstand some drops, they managed it with the S1 & the S2.
My advice would be to get it insured and get a case of any description, something is better than nothing, even if it's only a pouch!
