Samsung Galaxy Tab Teaser - EVO 4G General

Man that is is huge phone...I want it. The video is sweet, has a very dark feeling to it, lol.
http://theandroidblog.com/content/243-take-glimpse-samsung-galaxy-tab.html

Supposedly that's Samsung's "World leading design"... It looks like another iPad clone. Not saying it will perform like one, but it definitely looks like one.
I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of Archos' new line (8th generation) before I get another tablet.

Yeah it has a screen and a software keyboard....
iPad clone!

I think the 7in size might be nice. I had one of those Augen Gentouch78 and the only thing I liked about it was the size, it was also a 7in. I was able to hold it in both hands and thumb the keyboard comfortably. Wound up just returning it after a few weeks.

Way to spin what I said into something useless, and and nothing to the thread at the same time.
Anyway, back on topic.
I meant by the shape of it, the curves of the corners (from the preview page). It looks to be about the same shape and design layout. The only difference I see is instead of one bottom button, it has a set of keys.
Take a look at the Archos 8th generation, and notice how they look nothing like the iPad. Hence why I said this device does look like "another iPad clone".

Its not a phone.......

Nope, definitely just a tablet.
More than likely they'll offer a WiFi version, and a 3G+WiFi version. Of course the latter would cost more and would require a contract with a carrier.
But no, most certainly not a phone.

how is that anything "new". samsung has been trying to make a clone of iphone and itouch in the past few years. Each version fails like the next, and they ditch it without supporting it with updates at all, and move onto their next "big" idea.
Never again will i buy anything made from samsung again. Hope the company goes bankrupt.

Haha thats what I was thinking...

i dont know why so many people are refusing to get samsung because the past phones..all those phones were obviously crappy when they came out i.e instict, moment etc..these galaxy s phones/tablet are in a completely different league people..best screen and best processor on the market. Samsung is already preparing froyo and theres a leaked version out.
buuut although this tablet is going to be awesome, i want 10 inches..7 is to close to evo size..i want twice the size..but supposedly it has the best ebook app ever on it so i might just try it out

meh, you can get Aldiko or Kindle on any Android device. Aldiko is an amazing app that I've been using since I got my Archos 5 about a year ago. Together with importing with Calibre (a free program), you can get most anything.
Edit: lol just looked up what ereader the Galaxy S is using... It's Aldiko.

Samsung's touch wiz ui prices that they want to mimic apple.

Plus one to that. Although I don't want them to go bankrupt because they make pretty good TVs. But they really need to start doing things better - they have the resources/talent but without the vision/direction/focus.

I really hope you are right. The problem is people say that every time a new Samsung phone comes out, yet they haven't improved one bit. I still hope you are right though. More competition = better for us.

Anyone else notice that September 10th was circled on the Calendar app they showed on the Teaser. My video froze up at that exact moment when I was watching it, only way I noticed......just curious if it means anything or not....probably not considering the Samsung event Sept. 16th......but I can always hope!

No regrets buying 1st gen tab. Besides can always ebay it and put towards next model so no issues

did you guys even get the time when it will be launched? i would prefer the 2nd gen of course but if it takes a long time to mass produce it especially the S-amoled ones, then i better keep this one 1st

Update: Samsung's official note on the matter lists a WSVGA resolution (i.e. 1024 x 600 as on the current Tab) and some amateur geometry applied to the image does indeed show the prototype screen above has a smaller ratio than the requisite 2:1 for a 1200 x 600 pixel display. Ah well, we still want one.
So, the only difference is the super amoled display. Well, no regrets here either. I think it'll take them a few months anyway ^^
Scenario: you regret buying first gen so you wait until the second gen comes out. You buy second gen, then Samsung announce third gen, and you regret buying second gen. The circle repeats.
Sounds familiar.

We have no idea when it will be out. Remember the first gen is out in the states only... today ! And yes, 3rd, 4th, etc... gen will be even better
You can wait forever. the big disappointment would be if they launch it after 3 or 4 months but I doubt it
You can anyway always update later and give your first gen to your GF, or use as a nice remote for home automation or lots of other stuff
No regrets to have
I personally don't care, I'll be happy enough when my Tab arrives. Although I do think this is foolish on Samsung's part to be showing off the potential next model when they are busy trying to sell the first. As much as I dislike Apple, they do get a lot of things right and companies like Samsung would do well to follow their lead by keeping a tight lid on their internal developments.

my understanding is that the factory they need to mass produce these larger super amoled screens will not be ready until feb/march time. i remember them saying that in wont be until qtr 2 2011 before they will be available in large numbers.

That's the spirit, as if you wait for the new model you'll likely find them showing off the 3rd gen just as you place your order. Can't win, so rather than keep waiting you can just go ahead and enjoy what's out now.
resolution will be same. the initial news was wrong.

And see a massive drop in sales/revenue/profits?
Samsung aren't like Apple, they don't just stick their logo on a finished product and sell it on, they manufacture everything themselves from the individual components through to finished consumer products.
A large part of their business is based around selling those components to other companies, it's Samsung's AMOLED panels that were in the likes of the HTC Desire until supply issues forced the switch to Sony's S-LCD panels instead. So if they stop showing off new things like their 7" S-AMOLED panels, then they risk losing sales.
Anyway, the fact that they have demoed this new S-AMOLED panel in a Tab-like device doesn't necessarily mean they are already working on the Tab's successor. All we know is that they are developing a 7" S-AMOLED display (frankly not much of a surprise) and they are showing it off at a trade-show.
Given how difficult it is to make one slate-style device look different to any other one, is anyone shocked that their demo unit looks a lot like a Tab? There's only so many ways of designing an all-touchscreen device before it resembles something else that's already out there.
Plus it wouldn't be much of a surprise if they'd just stuck one into a Tab instead of building all-new custom hardware just for demo purposes, it would save money, which would make a lot of sense.
No regrets. Its in many ways better than Apple. I even downloaded a movie with it and unzipped it there and then.
But really curious about how very different it can be when compared to the AMOLED. I feel this is already very nice.

I enjoy using the Galaxy Tab mark-1 everyday, it is a very effective laptop companion (it has replaced many of my "desktop" applications), and of course it is also useful as a standalone portable device, on-the-go.
Sure, it'll be obsoleted faster than we can blink, but that's always the case with electronic gadgets...ask Apple fans
At any rate, if one is not in a rush to buy, there will be a lot more purchase options during Q1 2011, including devices powered by Tegra 2, with better displays, etc. Worth the wait for those who can, otherwise I say: buy now and enjoy the productivity boost (unless you play Angry Birds for too long of course ).
I believe I read that Samsung won't be selling these screens or devices using them until Summer 2011. Not interested in waiting that long.

Why did you buy now and not wait?

I'm just curious to get some opinions on why most of you bought the Galaxy S Tab now instead of waiting for better hardware, Honeycomb or any of the other fated reasons to wait?
Also if you choose to speak up as to why, can you also include whether or not you got it with a contract?
Thanks
Okay here's my answer . I know of nothing coming down the line that is worth waiting for...
The Tab seems to play videos fine, so I have no need of a faster CPU.
The screen is nice, and since AMOLED has failed (thus far atleast) to live up to the power consumption hype, and since I'm not a fan of unnatural "glowing" colors that's not a feature I'm particularly interested in either.
New versions of Android are coming out all the time, so that's never a good reason to wait (would be waiting forever in that case). Also Samsung has said Gingerbread is coming for the Tab. What makes honeycomb more wait-worthy than whatever comes after honeycomb again? I don't miss any tablet-features on the Tab, and the reviews that keep mentioning that Froyo is not tablet-optimized strangely never really mention in what way that is the case. It seems to fit perfectly on a 7" tablet as far as I can tell.
Battery life is very good, obviously pretty much completely dominated by the screen, and I see no reason to believe that's going to improve by a huge margin in the near future.
7" is the perfect size (since it fits in my pocket both in pants and jacket). The Tab is my only phone and does that job very well for my needs. Again can't think of anything coming down the line that's particularly revolutionary here either. The Tab is the perfect form-factor for me.
So I would actually rather be inclined to ask the opposite question. What is coming soon that should have made me wait?
Edit: And yes I got it with a 1-year contract (in Norway). About the same total price as at retail (~$950), except the contract includes 100 MB data per month for free.
Time is all you have in your life, the sooner you get it, the longer you can enjoy it . If you wait, when should you get one because there always will be better one and cheaper too in your future. Also, I predict when Android is optimized for Tablet, no tablet will have phone capability even though not many people like this big of a phone.
I had a galaxy S. Liked the phone but too many problems. The fact I sold my Galaxy S and only paid an extra £40 for my Tab that doesn't have the problems that plague the Galaxy S made it all worthwhile. Plus 7" screen doesn't hurt
Cause I cant stand the Ipad and its big brother attitude.
Because I'm very impatient
I am not an apple fan although I like the idea of the ipad I could never buy an apple. The ipad was to big for my needs, where as the tab is just the right size. I love the android os even though I have only used it for a month now
My need for a tab is to play movies and music, read emails, eboooks, surf the web and txt. This tab does all of this and much more.
I had the opportunity to do some overtime, the cash from which paid for my tab sim free.
And I love it.

My reasons
Ditto all of the above.
Had a tosh folio for a week, quite nice but screen poor and toshiba forgot to mention it wasn't finished! Waited for vega for too long and from what I have seen on the modaco thread today, I am glad I didn't.
Kept playing with the tab and my one concern, the price, got sorted when it dropped to £440.
It is great and i love it(but not in a sexual way!)
If I could pay $650 for a 7" phone/video/camera/music/web/eBook reader/navigation/tether and my two kids could enjoy it (playing zoodles) with me then I would do it Plus the fact that 7" is very comfortable in my hand vs a bigger size tablet.
I have the lightest, I believe, 13" laptop (2.9lbs) and the kids still want the tablet. Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Yes
I'm just a tech enthusiast and knew there was enough hype within the hacker community to expect that this thing would see some awesome howebrew ROMs and improvements in the near future. I like to mess around with my gadgets rather than settle for what features they came with. Waiting for honeycomb is no big deal for me either. This things works great as it is and cant wait until the first custom ROM gets released which I feel is just around the corner.

I got mine on Sprint. It was $400 if you signed a contract.
So far I love this thing. It's size is perfect for everything when you are at home.
I love anything tech related and I think the Tab has something really good going for it.
It was the right timing for me. I was looking into the HTC Desire HD while i was travelling in Taiwan. I found I love Android (compared to iPhone OS) when i had the HTC Desire. But i "desired" a larger screen. As well, i use the phone mainly for work. When I noticed the Tab had cellular capability, i decided to look for it instead of the Desire HD.
The 7" screen, portability, quick performance and great screen size (for my old eyes) was the payoff.
I dont have a contract as i bought it outright from a local taipei store.

This guy speaks the truth.
You never know when you are going to die (seriously). You can walk outside the door right now, get hit by a car (god forbid) and die. Lighting can hit you when you least expected. A tree can fall down on you. You can get sued by someone else. You can get framed for something you never did. You can get robed. So many things can happen when you least expect it.
So get your Galaxy Tab now before its too late.

Lets hear it for the early-adopter mantra!
And by the way, one reason Apple does so well is that there is a veritable ARMY of early-adopters who then sing the praises so that the wafflers and fence-sitters feel comfortable making a decision..or rather, having that decision made for them.
There's a certain comfort in that, and a certain amount of common sense, but if we were ruled by common sense, we'd still be banging rocks together as race.
man to me this is the best device out there right now,and this is coming from a dude that had every ihone/ipad that apple made.my last apple garbage was the iphone 4,i got tired of steve and apple telling me what i can and can't do with my device that i paid for,i was able to do more with my galaxy tab right out the box when i got did not even have to root/jailbreak it lol.i got the euro model unlock man i will never buy an other apple device ever again, and i hope some one here from sumsung is reading these comments on how not to **** with your customers on the next tab that they make.give us the full functions of the device or you will lose customers just like apple.
I'm going to be totally honest, I bought the Tab just for the hell of it. I wasn't in the market for a tablet, Ipad, Netbook or laptop I just happen to be at Best Buy and ran acrosss the Tab that they had on display. After doing that for about 2 mins I told the rep to get it for me. I also have the Evo and while I love my phone, the Tab is getting a little more love from me. Once Samsung comes out with the new Tab with better specs and the Amoled display im selling this one and get that. Until then I will continue to enjoy my purchase.

I got mine now because I waited long enough for it. I'm sure there will be other awesome tablets that will be cheeper with honeycomb and whatever else will come out but looking at how it is with every other device there will be a way to get those on here too.
I was sick and tired from my WM6.5 device. I had the Samsung Giorgio Armani.
I waited for a Samsung Galaxy with hardware keyboard. Then came the Galaxy Tab and I went to the shop and the moment I was using it I told the sales person I wanted to buy it. Still getting used to the Android environment but loving every moment.
Still looking for a way to get the left and right arrows on my keyboard and all would be perfect.

Xoom @ COSTCO

Anyone that is looking to get the XOOM, i just find out today that COSTCO will be carrying them at the cell phone booth. They had the samsung tab for $100 less then everyone else, so might want to check it out if you plan to get one. The email said live displays would start arriving in stores the 22nd, and display banners/signs would start arriving the 24th. It did not say when the units would go on sale or for how much.
No show today
Checked with Costco this am 22nd, and the fellow told me they will not have anything until Thurs.--he knew nothing about price etc.
I doubt it'll be cheaper than verizons on contract price of 600.
even then, people said the apple ipad was to expensive at 499, but the xoom with no flash support(i know yet, but it will, maybe, its motorola who locks there stuff down tight, ask anyone with a Moto X, so who knows. lol) is going for 800?!
I will wait for an HTC tablet with Honeycomb. It will be much better IMHO

Agreed - HTC seems to be pushing too much sense and not really promoting the android aspect of it. Yeah they update their phones relatively timely manner but they're doing with sense what apple did with unix - keeping it limited to only what they want and that's whats irritating.
I think the Flyer would have been nicer with vanilla honeycomb and not all the extra fluff of sense. Its the main reason why Moto, Samsung, AND LG are keeping with the vanilla version - they finally realize they'll get more people on board if they put out a standard tab the way apple did with the ipad
I might get the xoom after it is rooted, and bootloader unlocked, cm8 tab edition ftw
i am loving every aspect of it, but the only thing stopping me is there are no good apps and games for Android. I won't be playing games, but there will be time when i will want to and there are no good games. I can't justify myself spending $800 and not having a Complete product.

About the flyer truth HTC adds a lot stuff to their phones that not a lot people that are into deveplomet (like people at this forum) wants but to the regular consumer it does look really nice, is impresive what they did with android os (not honeycomb ) and is easy to use, plus 7 inch sounds like a good size I didn't get the sansumg tablet cause bad experience with sansumg in the past but anyone with open mind should read this article (link below), and most it to me sounds correct, android seems to be rushing to it just like gingerbread, they said in the past the gingerbread was going to have a better UI but it looks the same to me (just some new stuff here and there ) while HTC have been more advance to what google is doing, we can just put a simple example like facebook integration with HTC is better then google integration (after you download the app) so I have to give it up to HTC for taking a risky approach, and of course google for.bringing android

You obviously haven't played with the iPad enough. Well, lucky for you, I have (I have owned one since its launch). And I'll tell you that the lack of Flash support alone is reason not to get one. That, by itself, makes this tablet inferior to any Android-based one. Trust me on this! You'd be surprised how many sites that you visit rely on Flash.
Also, another thing that really limits the iPad is the fact that apps are not flexible in its code to accurately extrapolate the pixel density, leading you to have iPhone/iPod apps and iPad (HD) apps. Not the case in Android. All apps work in all devices. Regardless of its resolution. This means that all apps in the Android Market are also available to its tablet users. Not the case with the App Store. I'd say about half of the apps on my iPad are iPhone apps that are 2x scaled over, making it painfully pixelated.

Sorry for the crappy picture but here you go.
I am just going to wait for the $600 WiFi only version. I spoke with mobile guy at Costco and he said there is a WiFi only version in their system that will come out 30 days after the 3G Xoom is released (Feb 24). I have a Costco AMEX card and will just use that as Costco has a better return policy than BB. I also have a BB card that has nothing on it and interest free for 18 months sound good as well. I guess I will cross that bridge when the WiFi only model gets released.
The twitter about the unlocked bootloader totally changed me....now I waiting for the wifi only xoom...if it's available on Costco even the better.
ipad fans: hows that usb, flash, and camera support coming along? oh, my bad, you'll never have those...

Oh god don't let it be a collapsible 3screen android phone.
hopefully it will be the next flagship device announcement. android or not im curious to see what it is!
They'll probably have David Blaine and Chris Angel matching up in a "first one to blink, loses" contest. Sounds very exciting!
Probably a phone made by RCA or GPX, some BS off brand "industry first" again
Could be the Playbook, or the successor to the Evo.
This is the first year I'm not chomping at the bit for a new flagship. My Evo has continued to do everything I need and it's not really showing its age like my last few smart phones did after a year.
This summer I might save my $200 to put toward a tablet or something else. HTC has that cool looking tablet on the way with a pen for notes and drawing but I dunno if I would get one since it would probably lose all that cool stuff without a Sense ROM. I'll keep an eye out for the tablets from Asus, Vizio, Viewsonic, etc. with specs like a Xoom or iPad 2 but at a lower cost. If I can find a nice Android tab with Xoom-ish specs and no data plan closer to $400-500 I may finally pull the trigger on a tablet.
Hell, if someone ports Honeycomb to the G-Tablet, I might pick one up immediately. It's got similar specs to a Xoom (minus GPS I think) but only costs $400. Get Honeycomb on that thing and it's mine.
Yeah, I might skip this round too, as long as the cyanogen mod team keeps developing for the Evo, I'm good.
Even though I switched to the Atrix, I still got 3 sprint lines with one available for an upgrade. So I'm looking forward to see what Sprint has up their sleeves.
I read somewhere but I can't remember for sure where that the HTC Merge was supposedly going to all carriers...do anyone think that Sprint will be releasing that?
Uggh, I don't need to want another phone. The only way I would switch now is if sprint decided to leave my area out of 4G and do nothing about the terrible 3G signal. Then I would switch carriers.

Nah you think too much of Sprint. This announcement will be a phone from Coby.
Got a hunch it will be the BB Playbook and that it will run Android apps as the rumor supposedly states. That will be the innovation. Also being the first 4G tablet on the market. Since the Xoom won't have it's hardware update until after CTIA.

How do you like Atrix in comparison to the Evo?

Rule #1 NEVER buy a Samsung phone. Rule #2 NEVER buy a Motorola phone, and lastly RULE #3 if you buy and other phone for android besides HTC please check yourself into a psychiatric clinic of some sort.

Same here. I have never been completely satisfied by a phone before. I am truly nervous that they will release the next big thing and all of the devs will drop from the Evo.
How about a tablet with a slide-out keyboard?

pls! giv me some suggestion

samsung just announced that both of their tab will be released on early SUMMER n june 8 means i have to wait till june for buying anyone?
i m fed up of waiting, so i 'd like to ask xoom users, are xoom worth to buy? wat is it's bad?
If you have decided on buy an Android tablet, I don't see any reason why Galaxy tab's will be better than Xoom...
I can't see any negative to Xoom when you compare Galaxy tabs, but there are a few benefits,
Xoom comes with vanilla honeycomb which is million times better than any other 'skins'. Also you will get updates much faster and don't have to wait for Samsung to port it.
Look wise I like the Xoom..
I read an article yesterday that stated samsung is using a custom honeycomb UI so I lost interest immediately when I read that. I enjoy my xoom and I will stick with it at this point. I have also read that it feels like cheap plastic, which is another huge drawback in my opinion. To me a better screen isn't worth molested android, especially a version that is not only buggy and incomplete, but also total revamp of the whole UI, I foresee samsung screwing it up with a laggy interface as usual.

The thread should be merged with this one. Maybe you'll find more inspiration there.
btw, last time i watched a review and it said that "the marketplace need an update to view all apps". does the marketplace updated now n can view all of the apps?
I would go with the Google Experience device. Chances are you will receive updates more frequently on the Xoom than the Galaxy 10.1. Plus TouchWiz is on this thing according to Engadget. Not sure I would want that screwing up my Honeycomb greatness!
does xoom really very heavy? some user complained about it's weight in galaxy tab forum.. isit true?

It is quite heavy. different people have different tolerences though. It will be about .30lbs heavier than the 10.1 galaxy tab.

Well any tablet when held long enough will feel heavy. Depends on how comfortable you are holding the tablet and how strong your arms and wrists and fingers are haha..
Perhaps you can try holding a book of similar weight and see if you can stand it.
thx for everyone =)
but i just read about ppl said xoom will be sstop producing on june.
will this cause it lacks of accessories n software update in the future? is this true?
I read that the TouchWiz 4.0 is not deeply integrated into the Honeycomb (find the CNET article about this).
They are just bunch of apps and widgets. Even the 10.1 will be launched first as stock, which users can (or forced) to download the TouchWiz 4.0 via update.
I am not too worried with this TouchWiz thing, because XDA devs will root and we will be able to install custom ROM "anyway" Unless the bootloader is LOCKED and encrypted (like Motorola phones), history said Samsung has never done that.
So, I am now OK with this TouchWiz. From what I look in the hands-on video, it is still Honeycomb.
And also, living in Europe, Samsung gave updates to their phones here
So yeah, pretty much covered about the update.
I really like the hardware profile of this Samsung 8.9"
- Lighter at 470 gram versus 725 gram of Xoom.
- Thinner at 8.6"
- especially the PLS screen which is even better than the IPS of iPad2, no contest with Xoom in this area.
i heard that there's issue that xoom cant read sdcard? isit true? =(

just answered your other thread, yes, the SDcard doesn't work yet on the Xoom.
weight of xoom
im pretty sure that metal weighs more than plastic, so as far as how heavy it is....
i mean, c'mon..think outside the box people.
btw..my xoom is freakin awesome, and had a apple guy convert from ipad to xoom this past week. freakin sweet.
If you considering the Samsung, you obviously don't own a Galaxy phone. If you did you would not even think about it.

True...two companies I really REALLY dislike and that's samsung and Sony, over the years they have royally screwed me over, Samsung stop caring as soon as you hand over the cash and Sony screw you once they have your cash

I love my xoom, and don't think i'd get any other HC tablet right now. I will say, I do like 8.9" and my only hardward wish with the xoom is for it be lighter and thinner.

My thoughts exactly.
The history of Samsung updating their products is enough for me to say no thank you to any Android device they make. The only time I would consider is something like the Nexus S - stock Android with no Sense/Blur/Touchwiz and gets updates first.
Furthermore, am I the only one that cringes a little when you see/hear/read the word "Touchwiz"? Sounds like Touchjizz to me. Just sounds like a really cheesy name for a skin.
I honestly don't understand what everyone is up in arms about the weight of the Xoom is. Either get a dock or portfolio that can prop it up or lift some weights. Like 2 lb weights because the friggin Xoom weighs even less than that!
Sure, anything gets heavy after a while. But I have yet to run into a situation where I'm fatigued from messing with the Xoom. Honestly, the weight difference between any tablets shouldn't be an issue, unless it's half/double the weight of something (or something else extreme). I like the way the back feels. Sometimes it seems like people just want to find something else to criticize.
