Hey guys,
I have kind of a unique situation...
I do a lot of International travel for work - as such I currently have a VzW TP2. About a week ago the screen "shattered" (beneath the surface - phone still works fine). Looking at VzWs International Phones, I am disgusted by my options...
They can get me a replacement TP2, but then I will be locked into 2 years (work policy) with an already out-dated hardware phone (love the phone - but even with the Overclock now...a 3mp camera w/o flash...etc...it is out-dated). Of course they offered me an Imagio and or the LG Fathom. None of these phones make me excited about having it for 2 more years.
I really want either an Incredible or an X (too bad they arent International)...I was sort of leaning toward the Incredible since I like HTC and from what I understand they use the same battery...so just assuming the Incredibles battery life is better? Plus the X doesnt have a flash does it?
Anyway... to my question.
What I was thinking about doing - was getting an Incredible or an X - using that Domestically and then before I travel, de-program it (*228 ???) and program my cracked up TP2 and use that overseas, and when I come back de-program the TP2 and re-program the Incredible/X.
I travel about 1-3 weeks per trip, and usually about 6-8 trips per year.
The crappy part is I use my TP2 to watch movies on the plane from time to time...so if I use the cracked TP2 when traveling...I will be watching movies on a busted up screen...which sounds crappy but I REALLY want an Incredible or an X.
So - those of you that have the Incredible - and hopefully some of you were former TP2 users - would the above scenario be worth it to you? Or would you just get a replacement TP2 (my current TP2 is OC'ed stable at 729mhz - runs very smooth, but was never happy with the camera. only way to get a "decent" picture is to take the cover off before you take the picture) ???
The other option I may have is switching to AT&T and getting the Captivate...but not a huge fan of going to AT&T.
Sorry for the long post - looking forward to hear what you all have to say.
Sounds like a pretty good plan, sorry about ur broke screen. couldn't u use incredible on the plane though? Airplane mode with WiFi on?
Is for activating and deactivating I couldn't tell u, sorry.

yeah i could - just dont really care to have to carry 2 phones around =)
i travel pretty light (one to the big things i loved about getting my tp2 - stopped taking a phone, camera, ipod and went to just the TP2).
VzWs International phone selection is horrible right now...(not that it was ever great).
I personally love the DInc. I came from the samsung intensity(lol) to lg dare, to droid eris, to the DInc.
such a great phone you wont be dissappointed
I came from a Touch Pro 2 same as you, I loved my TP2. As far as an International phone It's pretty hard to beat.
That being said, aside from the International aspect there is no comparison.
It did take me a while to get used to not having a keyboard but the benefits of the Incredible make it well worth it.
Get the Incredibe, you won't regret it.
Also, you might look into getting a replacement screen for your TP2.

The incredible is a definite upgrade. but if you have time to wait for a new phone........ wait
Samsung Galaxy S (Verizon will call it Samsung Fascinate)
will possibly be available next month for 200 with contract. Better GPU, Process, Screen Size, Screen Quailty, Battery life..

do you know if it will be a global phone ???
from what i have found looks like no (CDMA only) ???
You could also pick up a used storm or tp2 for a few bucks and get the dinc for day to day. Tp2 would probably be a better choice since the batteries are interchangable. Seen them all over cl for cheap.

CDMA actually has a pretty fair international penetration. The GSM folks would have you believe that you can barely travel outside the USA and still use CDMA. Nothing could be further from the truth, and GSM is no panacea either. It has the same differing frequency issues as CDMA does.
Here's an interactive map of CDMA areas worldwide so you can check if where you tend to travel has CDMA coverage. http://www.cdg.org/worldwide/index.asp
You can also check with Verizon to see what countries they have CDMA roaming capability in.
If there is CDMA in the area you travel, get the Incredible.
Update: VZW has a very inexpensive dual CDMA/GSM phone, the Escapade, that is well reviewed. It isn't fancy, but it will keep you in touch.

3.2MP camera, maybe it is better than the 3.2MP camera on the TP2 - but I dont want to bother. I'd like a GOOD camera and would prefer a flash if possible...

Convince me. The stainless Steele body is appealing to me. I don't really see a difference in the processor speeds, and the full keyboard is appealing. Battery life on my nexus s is unimpressive however and I've heard that the nexus s packs a bigger battery. Can anyone persuad me????

I'll trade you my g2 fo the nexus s ;].
In terms of screens most would probably like the nexus s screens more since its more vibrant <--- LOL.. colorful and all that smack. However the g2's screen would likely to be sharper than the nexus s. All depends on what you are using it for. Nexus s's screen would be better than g2 if you were doing multimedia, but g2 is probably better for reading text and etc.
EDIT: I would like to note that once you feel the g2's build you most likely won't want to let go of it. Just feels so solid. I took my cases off the g2 because I missed the feeling of the actual phone
The G2? Why not wait for a dualcore phone? hehe.

Finally gave up on ATT getting any decent Android devices. Well, the Fascinate seems OK, but lots of complaints on these forums (and elsewhere) about various things. Plus, the outlook for new devices in the first part of next year does not look very promising either. And I've always been a big HTC fan. I found out that Bell Canada released the HTC Desire Z about a month ago, with 3G bands compatible with ATT's network. I decided to take the plunge. Not an easy pill to swallow, as an unlocked, unsubsidized device like this goes for a premium (and obviously not for everyone). But what the heck, its a been a good year, and I decided to get myself a Christmas gift.
For those that may not know, and are interested in the Desire Z, the Bell-branded NAM version, model number A7275 is currently the only one that will work with ATT's 3G network. The European and T-Mobile (the G2) versions will only work on EDGE. So take care when shopping around.
Let me tell you guys, this device is amazing. The build quality is excellent, with most of the body being a gorgeous brushed aluminum, accented with some slightly grippy plastic (also nice looking, and does not cheapen the appearance). The keyboard is very good. The layout is slightly different from my trusty old Tilt2, with the keys slightly smaller (and one less row of keys). But after one week with the device, I'm already adjusting quite well.
I've played around with Project Android on my trusty old Tilt2, so Android is not completely new to me. I'm still getting accustomed to where some things are located, but that is true with switching to any new phone OS. Knocks on Android for not being as "smooth" as the iPhone seem largely unfounded to me. The Desire Z is super smooth, and of course has tons of customization and functionality that the iPhone will never have. And the HTC Sense modifications are all very nice.
TO get the phone up and running, I just had to slip my SIM into the device, and manually enter in the ATT data network APN settings (only had WiFi before I did this), and was good to go with 3G speed. I already keep my contacts, email, calendar on Google. So the Google implementation is awesome for me. I just entered my Google login and password, and it synched all that stuff in a couple minutes.
The vendor stated on their website that SIM unlocking voids the manufacturers warranty. So I decided to go ahead and root, the day after I received the phone (and now overclocked, as well). Also used a couple different tools (Titanium Backup and Absolute System Root Tool) to successfully remove the Bell bloatware. The Bell ROM is missing the HTC Locations app (I use Google Maps all the time anyway), and the Android car panel (which I don't really like), but otherwise, the Bell ROM is pretty close to stock. So I'll stick with the stock ROM for now.
Moral of the story, no regrets buying an unlocked Desire Z. Absolutely loving it!
....
I highlighted in red above the exact model you need to buy for it to work on AT&T 3g network and I remember reading somewhere else that it has to be this exact model number, I think it was in a thread here on xda developers and they gave a link on where to but it from, Ill try and find it for you, but in the mean time heres the link for the site I got the above thread from.

I find HTC's build quality to be much better that Samsung's. The heft and the feeling of the desire z, is what originally won me over when I was debating between it and the samsung vibrant.

I purchased mine from Ebay. I believe Negri Electronics also sells it online. It'll run you in the neighborhood of $500-600.
I'm selling my Nexus for a G2. I'm going to make at least $250, and the G2 seems at least equal to or better than the Nexus in every category except the screen. I can sacrifice the SAMOLED for a SLCD for $250 (plus the added benefits like a non-plastic body, 4G, a keyboard, and a notification LED).

Man. I was considering selling my G2 and picking up a Nexus S, but this thread has pretty much gotten rid of that idea. What do you guys think about the MT4G, though? I am still considering picking up that one and dumping the G2. (Still haven't gotten accustomed to the keyboard.)
I'm baffled why anyone would want a myTouch over a G2.
Just saying that dumbass name pisses me off. myTouch. ugggggh
However, I wouldn't mind having a Nexus S to play with. I don't think I'd ever give up my G2 though. <3

Yeah, when I first decided to buy a new phone a couple of weeks ago, I just figured the myTouch was a ****ty phone based on its name and was going with the G2 for sure, but then I learned that it certainly competes hardware-wise...and coming from an iPhone 3G, I would very possibly be more comfortable with its form factor.
Lighter and smaller, too. I suppose if this "mirror" tool ends up working well so I can video chat with the G2, that will solve my last big problem. Anyone think that will pan out?
The I9250 just passed through the FCC as a pentaband phone with both T-Mo's AWS bands and ATT's bands.
http://phandroid.com/2011/10/08/samsung-nexus-prime-gt-i9250-passes-through-fcc-with-t-mobileatt-bands/
This is my next upgrade path if it comes to fruition; so here's to hoping.
What about the rest of you?
You didn't look at the FCC sheet did you.
IT IS MISSING the 2100 frequency band...aka...T-Mobile 3G/4G WILL NOT WORK. This phone is not a T-mobile-banded device. At best it is the international version...maybe AT&T's one as second best but not T-Mobile's. Sadly I don't think we're getting this awesomeness for some time still. Sucks.

You are mistaken. The FCC does not need / can't test the 2100 Mhz band as those frequencies are used for the downlink i.e. the tower is emitting and the phone is only receiving. The phone emits RF energy on the 1700 band since this frequency band is used for the uplink in the AWS-1 spec. The FCC is checking to make sure the RF emissions from the phone conform to regulations so they test 1700Mhz and don't care about 2100Mhz as far as the phone is concerned. mmmkay? This is not a phone spec-sheet, it is simply the FCC test results.
The phone shown on that FCC summary WILL MOST DEFINITELY support full t-mo 3G and ATT's as well. It's similar to many of the recent Nokia phones in that respect.
Wow hats off to you because I totally forgot about that. FCC really can't/doesn't need to test downlinks. Yay for new T-Mobile nexus then haha?
it wont be coming to tmobil for awhile guys! as its a v exclusive first, sorry

Thanks for the info.. After reading the other guy's post, It was like the end of the world, thanks for giving us hope! LOL..
this is how I was before the Galaxy s came out, I'm excited about something again! LoL
One thing has me worried about the Nexus Prime, the size!
It is nearly 4.7 inches. Maybe possible to still keep the phone small since the buttons are built into the OS/screen, untill I saw the leaked videous. If the phone in the leaked videos is really the next Nexus, it is HUGE and has a bunch of wasted Bezel space at the bottom. Size alone is a huge factor, I can't carry around a huge phone.
Look at the dimensions from the FCC.
124 by 68mm.
For comparison the vibrant is 122 by 64mm.
The nexus IS BARELY bigger than the Vibrant. I'd say the size is perfect. The lack of those physical buttons apparently really makes a difference.

Thanks, I guess that huge black area of the bezel on the bottom on the videos is misleading if those dimensions you stated are accurate.
Gosh I want this phone, release it already! It better come to T-Mobile and not months from now! How much do you think it will cost at full retail without a contract? I hope not more than 500.
On a side note, if it uses the same PowerVR SGX540 as our Vibrant, that goes to show that our Vibrant still has a lot of power, at least in the GPU area. Nexus should have used a better GPU, but it's ok!
For those who still don't know how Bands work:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
FCC tests only US bands for US market. So they always skip IMT Band (2100) even though it is present on the phone.

Does it really matter? can you see the difference?
It is a phone camera, don't expect real 8MP from an 8 MP phone camera. I mean even those compact cameras sensors are very small (little finger nail-size) and you can't compare their pictures quality with the ones from SLRs.
To me, 3MP is enough, more than that is a waste of storage space for a photo that is taken by a camera phone. My previous Vibrant camera had always been set to 4MP (Wide mode).

And no I cannot tell the difference between 5-8MP couldn't care less...point is android phones come out with the newest hardware..always...so it seemed strange to have a camera that uses 2 year old technology is all...

I might have not stated it too clearly but I found an article talking about how other articles are just digging up the rumors from the BGR article from forever ago.
Maybe that article was just optimistic and thinks the other ones were wrong, maybe it was right and the other ones were wrong. I am waiting until the phone is announced and Google (or the manufacturer) tells me what the specs are. I have no requirement to decide right now what I want to buy.
i'm pretty stoked, i thought about the Hercules, then was like hell i'll grab a gsm version of the sgsII HD then bam find out the Nexus Prime is a Boosted version of the SgsII HD, with stock android 4.0... can't beat that, straight ota updates from google, no twiddling my thumbs hoping my phone gets updates before my TV does. actually now that i think about it my samsung TV has gotten more Network updates then my Vibrant lol.

I hate to give away ideas...but you know list our t989s on craigslist unlocked and rooted for $400...its like an almost equal trade-in.
One of the main deal makers for this, is for those on contract who can get more money by terminating their contract for a cheaper plan and newer phone...
What's the catch why so cheap??

at first I was like OK good deal and I like the larger screen size. But then i said no point we have a faster processor. So its like downgrading. I think ill wait for quad core .

That and the fact that the phone is 5 months old, plus I feel GOOGLE od about to release something in a few months.

When did google start selling phones on market? But I prefer my 8MP camera over the 5 on gnex, processor speed isn't the deal breaker i'm sure it can handle all the apps we have well enough.. I'll wait for s3 tho just bcuz of the camera
Apples iPhone, There's a patent for that. Solving lifes dilemmas one lawsuit at a time.

if you put a tmobile sim in its only 3g right?
im surprised that so many people would trade 4g for 3g speeds pretty much just to get ICS
although coming from a g1 to the vibrant to the t989 having a 3 color LED would be awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
its been like 2 years since ive seen an LED light on a phone ive owned...man i miss the LED lights

You'd still get "4G" (since T-Mo classifies anything at 14mbps+ 4G) at 21mbps, half of what you can get from the t989 if it really matters that much.
Link doesn't work with me. It just sends me to the normal play store

ehh u sure about that? international version only get edge
Curious what people do not like about it.
I don't have it yet, but the constant focusing in video. I hate that. I hope there's a "lock focus in video" option like the s4 has or someone mods it.. i'm sure it's an easy software fix. but yeah that seems to be about it.

I dont like the shiny plastic back. I wish LG would have chosen to use the soft touch rubberized back, that was on the G2x. Other than that, no complaints here. September 25th cant come soon enough.
i agree, except the shiny plastic back, which makes it look like S4, maybe i would have loved a SD card slot, but guess i can live without it. One more thing is not sure why LG did not go with 4k recording option, when the chip can support it(Not a biggie though). Other then it's all cool.

Not sure what you're talking about. I saw a video where it has a focus slider....that's a bit odd.

Rubberized back on Optimus G? It has glass back What I would have wanted is the back of G Pad 8.3, just take a look at that brushed aluminium.
The shiny back, the UI, the button placement is hard to get used to... ( i have a test unit )
i keep going back and forth between this and the droid maxx for my upgrade. I'm not sure which I will end up with come Thursday. i wish this was offered with a stock ui.

I don't see an option to lock focus. It does keep focusing on objects while I pan around my desk.
From what I've gathered, I don't like:
No removable battery
No MicroSD card slot
No SVLTE (Simultaneous Voice and LTE)
Other than that, looks perfect.
The shiny back is about it. I would like a SD card slot but it s not a deal breaker.

Interesting. I was going off of the analysis here. Maybe only for the Sprint triband LTE model.

LG has nothing to with SVLTE, it's only your operator which is responsible for availability of this service. Phone can't bring you voice if it's not available on 4G network in your region. Can't blame G2
In fact it called VoLTE

SVLTE and VoLTE are totally different. VoLTE allows for much higher quality voice using the LTE network, basically VoIP using LTE. SVLTE allows you to use LTE data along with standard CDMA voice at the same time; in other words: browsing the web on LTE while on a call.
Wikipedia Article:
[SVLTE] is a solution solely based on the handset, which does not have special requirements on the network

well, you right, I'm wrong. But
The disadvantage of this solution is that the phone can become expensive with high power consumption.

I belive most LTE handsets can do this already...i can on my S4
I wouldnt worry to much about SVLTE till verizon abandons their CDMA network...
Thing I don't like about the phone locked BL lol... also no root yet since not many people have the phone yet... not gonna try the Korean root lol.
