I've followed the guide to a T on both a Windows 7 (launched as Admin) and on a XP machine. In both cases the program sits at "Waiting for device...".
Driver installed, USB Debugging set to on. Nothing... Happens...
Never installed Sync on either OS, nor, as far as I know, is it on my phone.
WTF?!
Install Sync.
I'm having the same problem and I have sync installed. Not sure what to do.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Hmm ok I will try installing Sync. Where do I get that from? I can't seem to find it.....
are the hboot drivers installed (different from the motorola drivers)
I followed everything exactly as it said to install the bootloaders and it won't connect to the phone. When I first tried it would connect but I didn't properly install the drivers
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
I suggest a Switch to the Linux version...
Do yourself a favor...download a "live" linux distro (Ubuntu works fine on most all hardware) and use the Linux version of Unrevoked. I went that method after several hours of frustration under Win 7...
I was having this same exact issue! The solution (as someone else mentioned) was to install HTC Sync. Then make sure you close Unrevoked (if you already didn't) and launch it using right click > Run as Administrator.
If you installed the driver properly, it should work!
Btw, when I had the driver installed (the one that Unrevoked comes with) I was still seeing an unrecognized device under Device Manager when I connected my Aria with debugging enabled. Installing HTC Sync fixes that problem.
I couldn't find HTC Sync nor could I really even find out what it was. I'm assuming it's a Windows program?
Anyway, since I couldn't find that, I downloaded the newest Ubuntu distro, ran unrevoked as sudo, and STILL does not connect. STILL says "Waiting for device..." Ran as root, USB Debugging on. This sure is a huge pain in the ass for "Painless root and reflash".....
Is there a forum specifically for this program? I'd love to get some feedback from the developers here.
EDIT:
Ok so I finally got it to work by having the phone plugged in BEFORE running the program as sudo. It was quick and painless after that! Thanks for all the help, sorry about the sarcasm, I got flustered haha.
I had issues with my Aria connecting to PC due to multiple user being logged in at once via Fast User Switching. Me, my wife, and my son are sharing same PCs, and normally all three of us are logged in, and we just switch between our profiles using Windows-L key. And when there is someone else logged on besides me, my Aria simply won't connect -- neither to Unrevoked, nor even to HTC Sync itself.
Same thing was happening to my Nike+ wristwatch before, by the way.
Please try to avoid creating new threads for topics already being discussed. For you issue, please visit the Unrevoked thread. If you cannot find the solution posted there, feel free to create a new post in the existing thread.

Hello,
I've been googling around for a workaround but I cannot seem to find one that actually works. The problem is, when I try to connect my phone to the PC and, for example, want to flash it with an official rom - it simply cannot find it. It can find the SD card when I mount it.
When I put it in, Windows attempts to install a few drivers but fails at the ADB. According to several sites, I can just use the one from HTC Sync or from the Android SDK. It installs fine but it still doesn't seem to be able to contact my phone. I cannot sync it either.
Anyone got an idea? I seem to be on my last nerve.
I dont have any problems here. What windows beta release do you use?
Final version. Released today. It's Windows 7 Professional.
First, set the phone to debugg mode...
Ok here we go (at least it works for me)...
1.- Remove the drivers actuaslly installed (it might get tricky, as I don't know exactly how to remove the registry keys)
2.- Once you have cleaned windows from the drivers, connect the phone to the computer and let it recognize everything (Probably it would not recognize the ADB drviers, so far we are good)
3.- After the drivers are installed, go and check in control panel/Devices Administration (or something like that... I have Windows in spanish so I don't know exactly how is called on english... By the way, sorry if my english sound a little bit weird =P..)
4.- Here you should see probably a device as "not recognized" or what ever is called... Here is the part where you need to select the driver manually.
5.- Check the phone driver folder (you should have it, if you don't get them)
6.- When you see the different options, select the one called HTC Dream Composite ADB Interface
7.- You are done =D...
I hope I made it clear enough for you...
If you have any doubt, add me to MSN xnofrostx - hotmail.com (I don't put the @ because I hate spam xD so you should add only the xnofrostx =P...
Hope you can get it to work...
I couldn't, for the life of me, get it to work so I put Windows XP on a vmware and flashed it through there. Works wonders.
Sorry for not being able to help.
I run Windows 7 Evaluation copy. I have had no problems. In fact there was nothing for me to set up, it just saw it on first attempt.

I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate. Driver from AndroidSDK and HTC Sync works perfectly for me. I can access everything except cannot sync with HTC Sync.

CyanogenMod 4.1.9999
I cannot sync either, when installing the sync program it gives an error but continues installation, then my phone says it cannot detect htc sync on my computer, but im gonna try this link http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/08/24/workaround-for-htc-hero-sync-problem-in-windows-7/

LOL, Windows 7 is a damn nice release and a lot faster than both xp and vista compared to the hardware available at the moment off release.
i am also using windows 7 beta and final
no issues at all. and i also think, that win7 is really good piece of software. far superious to win xp
I've been trying to get anything to recognize my Hero on my PC for the past few days.
What I've tried:
Installing HTC Sync
Installing Android SDK
Installing the HTC HERO DIAG drivers
Doing ##DIAG# and not doing it.
...And all different combinations of those. The problem is I can't get QPST, CDMA Workshop, UniCDMA, or QXDM, etc to recognize it. The Hero synced to the HTC Sync a couple times, but nothing else. It won't even assign a COM port on the computer.
The phone is also rooted, which, I wouldn't think would make much difference, but I'm running out of ideas here.
Any help is really appreciated.
Did you install the regular HTC drivers ? Go to your device manager and see if it says android phone when its plugged in if its there tell it to update driver and point it to the folder called HTC drivers located in the HTC sync program directory.
I tried to do that but the driver wizard said that it could not find any drivers that were better than the ones already installed. (or something to that effect)
EDIT: Ah! I don't know what happened but it appeared on COM5 as "HTC Diagnostic Interface". That may be what I needed. We'll see.
I get the same thing, says "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."
"HTC Dream Composite ADB Interface" <--???
Exactly the same for me.
Device not recognized, Remove and reinstall HTC Sync and manually selecting drivers, Device wiping and trying again, using a different USB port, using a different cable, reinstalling windows!!!!!, using a different computer, Pulling out my hair!!!!!
Nothing works!!!
However, It did used to ask for mounting and unmounting the SD when plugged in but it has NEVER found HTC sync on my PC.
Now, all I get is Charging battery on the Hero and device not recognized on the PC.
Device manager politely tells me "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
My system is Windows 7 X64 and my Hero Has run both the shipped ROM and now a cooked 2.1.
Please help me!
I have never been able to sync my Hero on any of my Win7 machines. I have been able to sync sporadically with my work XP Pro SP3 machine though. However, since flashing the AOSP 1.6 rom, HTC sync isn't recognizing my phone anymore. I can however mount the SD card.
Problems connecting Evo to PC
Same problem, but on EVO... Anyone ever figure it out??
I should elaborate I suppose lol... Everything *worked* fine, and then suddenly, appearantly for no reason, it just stopped... Device manager now calls the HTC diag driver an unknown usb device and gives the same warning message as above. And when I try to update the driver, gives the same message about it being up to date...
I have not been able to get ADB to work on my phone since the first time I flashed 2.2, when plugged in it will do the "do you want to turn on usb storage" message and it works fine.
You all might want to try installing the android adb drivers. Its a well know issue with the htc drivers. If you click on my avatar and go to my post you can find my thread on how to install adb on windows 7 32/64 and xp. Adb works fine for me and sync as well. The adb drivers might help out. Well good luck.

more than likely it is your usb cable has been damaged.
i had the same problem, i went to my provider and got a new usb cable for it. (they gave it to me for free, no questions) no more problems at all, works like a charm.
i still have the old cable too, it will not recognize the hero on the computer. in fact if i plug the cable in without the phone, the cable itself actually comes up and says unrecognized device. but it works great for charging.
An odd one....
I have one of the HD2 Android releases on my phone, and it's working fine EXCEPT....
USB tethering does not work.
Now here's the odd part.
1. I have two machines. Both running Win7/x64.
2. One loads the RNDIS driver and works fine. The other can't find the driver on Windows Update.
I have no clue what's going on, but the USB signature is VID_0bb4&PID_0FFe, which is valid for the HTC Sapphire.
And, like I said, the other machine -also running Win7 - finds it just fine.
Any ideas?
Answering my own question...
If you run into this, put this somewhere on your disk and point "Update Driver" at it.
It'll work.
Now why this was on the disk of ONE machine (which worked) and NOT the other (which did not), and why Windows Update wouldn't find it either (!!!) is unknown.
All I know is that this is the file that Windows 7 wanted, and didn't have on one of the computers - but did have on the other.
i'm running Windows 7 x64 and when i start usb tethering from android on HD2 there is Android Device driver missing in Device Manager, I've read that Windows 7 already have Remote NDIS support so no need for seperate driver download if you have Windows Mobile Device Center but it ain't working, the same problem as you had.
Luckely, your solution and this separate driver works, Windows 7 complains about unsigned driver but who cares, USB tethering is working
Thanks!
didn't work...
i attempted installing the driver OEM106.inf, but received an error once it was loaded on my pc:
"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"
i was having similar problems as Genesis trying to tether my Android phone via USB to my pc and receiving a Remote NDIS driver problem (same as above). I successfully tethered my phone to my PC once (and only once), but after I woke the computer from sleep mode, my pc began giving me errors on the "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device" stating that windows cannot load the drivers ("rndismpx.sys" & "usb8023x.sys"). I haven't been able to tether via USB since then.
Windows Update states the driver is up to date, and when I tried Genesis3's driver fix, it only gave me the same error.
Any ideas?
Running win7/x64 on a toshiba i3, and a HTC nexus 1 running android 2.2.2
The files referenced have somehow been damaged or destroyed. Find them from another machine and put them back, and the OEM file I posted will work.
Those two files have to be on your machine - the OEM file is the pointer to them, but the base-level drivers have to exist.
you may need the latest version of htc sync
i did all my flashing on an xp computer and when i got win7 i just could not get any drivers to work. i downloaded the latest version of htc sync and all the drivers loaded just fine. time to flash this thing again ive had the same rom for two weeks
This is what I was looking for, and it worked for me, thanks!
PISSA! Tried for a while to get usb tethering to work and this did it! Took a minute for windows to sort things out after the driver update but its working! THANK YOU!

Worked like a charm, thanks! I just had to update driver with provided file and it started working. Thank you very much again! Bump may not be a bad idea, maybe few more users will solve their problems with this. HD2 isn't a native Android device, so it wasn't that strange that it didn't worked out-of-the-box even with Win7 RDNIS (or sth like that) native support.

I would like to share my solution. I modified the oem.inf file in the oem.zip(above) ,by changing the manufacturer name and device id as given in the PC 's device manager(unknown device).
It should work for xp,seven,vista.
I keep encountering a problem when I try to connect using PC MODE. The driver never installs any which way that I try. Reinstalling drivers restarting computers... blah blah blah. I have tried different roms and they all have the same problem. It seems that only the stock rom works with the existing drivers. Does anyone else have this issue??? Any Help???
I recommend looking around for the drivers. They can be found all over the forums and the internet. I'll see if I can locate them and post a link.

this needs to be in general
btw: try taking of usb debugging before connecting it in pc mode
Tried that already and I still have the same issue. Come on.. I can't be the only one out there with this problem. Also why should this be in "general" when it pertains to running custom roms. It's not like I am asking about how something works.
I think this is a legitimate issue with running custom roms i which i am surprised no one has addressed. Its not like I have not searched the forums. So if this problem is resolved then show me the sticky please!!

General because i just hooked mine up perfectly on windows using pc mode running liberty 1.5 therefore it isnt the ROM's fault making ANDROID development the wrong forum choice
try here
and read this and the following comments
also restart your computer and keep pressing F8 until a menu comes up press arrow down and click the one about not requiring signatures for drivers

well i turned off debugging. and nothing turned it on and nothing. Tried the drivers from that link that you guys posted and same thing. Could it be that I am using Windows 7? It's a clean install of Liberty 1.5 and I uninstalled the newer 4.8 drivers and installed the 4.6 drivers from the link. Restarted and still nothing. What am I doing wrong? if I restore my ROM back to the original stock everything works fine and I can sync with windows media and all that. The other way is a nogo. Help?

The information below is what comes out of the event viewer. Maybe it is just a windows error. But after uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers why would it not work? Do I need to start deleting crap? I will try to install on another PC see if I have the same issue.
Edit--- Just tried it on another pc with a Fresh install if windows 7 x64. Installed drivers and same issue as below. What is so special about the stock ROM that allows the driver to function. is there an apk that the custom roms are missing? something must communicate with this driver and allow it to initialize. HELP!??

im not exactly sure whats wrong with just usb mode? you can move files on and off it fine and if anything is wrong it is probably some drive/code that is written in with blur/bloat that is removed, idk if it is just saying, maybe you can revert to stock delete moto drivers hook ur phone back up let it install and then root and maybe itll work then
I think you are on the right track. Considering that when I restore the stock rom from backup everything works fine. Drivers install and I can sync my music. Perhaps there is a part of blur that we can put back to fix this issue. I will experiment by taking the blur apks and installing one by one see how far I get. If anyone any better ideas please let me know.

Possible Solution - Help Needed
I think I may have stumbled onto something. While running the stock OS I disabled the StorageMonitorService.apk by renaming it and rebooting. Afterwards I get the same results. I think this apk controls/talks to the MTP Drivers. How do I get this apk from the stock rom to install on the liberty rom. How do I make sure it runs on startup. If this works I think we will be able to put it into all of the AOSP roms. I know it is one of the blur apps but for the extra functionality hardware wise I think it would be worth it. Has anyone even thought about doing this? If not then why?
Also another work around is to use Linux cuz it doesn't need any special drivers lol

I suspect you have the same problem as I do...there doesn't appear to be a 64 bit diag mode driver for the Droid X. If u try this on 32 bit Windows it will likely work.

I'm so confused here, what seems to be the issue again? LoL. OP- you want to hook up PC mode from your phone but your computer seems to not want to. At least that's what I have gathered from all the posts and no one has suggested the Moto drivers lol
Motorola Drivers; every computer needs them for their Droid X to communicate properly with their PC. I use Moto Connect and why? Because any Motoroa device you hook will be auto-updated once the program is opened up and it also keeps all the drivers up to date.
Download Motorola 4.9.0 Driver with MotoConnect, download it, run the middle option on the bottom left hand corner and you should be all done. Your phone should now sync with your PC. I have used this with 32 and 64 bit Windows 7 computers. All older Windows based OSs' should work fine.
If that does not work, without reflashing the maderstock .340 and starting with a clean slate, the problem might be easy or hard to diagnose both pc and phone side.
Same here!!!!
I'm definitely encountering the same issues. I have installed the latest Motorola 4.9.0 drivers and even doing cleans and reinstalls to no avail.
What's even more odd is that I had recently replaced my phone because of rebooting issues. When I first got it and ran stock... no problems, it would install MTP just fine on both my desktop and laptop both running Win7x64. Once I restored a nandroid to my customized Liberty v1.0... it goes sour.
I even recently reformatted my desktop on a fresh install of Win7x64 and the problem occurs right away after installing the 4.9.0 drivers.
I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with the version being .340 since it only appeared after that. And possibly with ROMs that are based on .340.
I'm going to try Liberty v1.5 to see if it fixes it.
Ok I have found out that there is something in the blur stuff that is part of the stock rom that needs to be running otherwise the drivers on the pc side will not initialize. I have tried liberty 1.5 and it does not work however apex rom seems to have it working. I guess apex may solve me problem. Also for those that keep suggesting that the drivers are the issue. I appreciate it but that is not the issue when using custom roms. The issue is the blur software on the phone. It seems that you need some parts of it to make sure the phone hardware works 100%
If you want to test for yourself take the stock rom and disable blurstoragemanager.apk I think its called the motorola storage manager.

Ok... first off im a noob to this forum but I know this is a legitimate issue not user error and ive spent the last 4 days scouring to get SOME information on this and the only thing ive found is remove battery and reset phone... HELLO!!!! thats step one on the list... sorry venting done...
Device: mytouch 4g
OS: Windows 7
When I got this phone i plugged it in and ran with no issues until i tried to root it without success... and when i tried the ADB method i found that the phone would no longer mount into windows 7 i have tried multiple computers and multiple cables so it's a device issue.
When I plug my phone into a computer it comes up with "searching for drivers" and fails... look in device manager and it says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
Tried manually finding drivers and can't...
Tried "repairing" the install of HTC drivers that came off the HTC website and didn't work...
Tried installing PDA net to get different drivers... didnt work
uninstalled devices and get the same issue...
deleted upper and lower filters from registry
Tried every combination of fastboot/USB debug
even tried desperatly deleting cookies/cache/web history(found on another forum)
AND NOTHING WORKS...
if you can think of anything I haven't tried it would be nice

usually I would assume a driver issue (thats what windows thinks it is) but I've reinstalled the drivers around 10 times desperately and restored my computer to no avail so i think when i tried to root it the first time it flashed the usb firmware... if thats complete bs then just let me know... new to android... not new to computers...

usually I would assume a driver issue (thats what windows thinks it is) but I've reinstalled the drivers around 10 times desperately and restored my computer to no avail so i think when i tried to root it the first time it flashed the usb firmware... if thats complete bs then just let me know... new to android... not new to computers...

For a Hard Drive
1lug your phone into the computer
2:On your phone, drag the top slider bar down to the bottom
3:There should be a notification that says charge only. Click on that and select Disk Drive, Mount as disk drive. Click that
Try that and let us know what happens.
Edit: If you are trying to use ADB you want to be on charge only and have USB debugging on . To get to debugging
Menu-settings-applications-development-USB debugging
yeah that was one of the first things I tried(i actually have that as default)... The problem is that my computer thinks its an unknown device when plugged in and I can't point it to the correct driver...
USB Debugging is enabled, correct?
Seems strange... have you even tried installing the driver on another computer?
I've tried debugging on and off...
And yes I've tried a different computer that was one of the second things I tried

Ok... first off im a noob to this forum but I know this is a legitimate issue not user error and ive spent the last 4 days scouring to get SOME information on this and the only thing ive found is remove battery and reset phone... HELLO!!!! thats step one on the list... sorry venting done...
Currently installed Apps that may be involved
Visionary
Super User
Terminal Emulator

sounds like a driver issue... i am not a 100% but thats what i sounds like.. download and install this program.. it uses the correct drivers.. just make sure u select "HTC" when prompted.. http://junefabrics.com/android/download.php goodluck report back
i tried that already and after trying again (just now) it failed again... i wish this was a simple driver issue...
I might be totally off but try changing your sd card and see whether your computer accepts it.
Also when installing drivers make sure your device is not connected to the computer.
Or try different USB port, or a factory reset.

nope... different sd card/different usb port/factory reset didn't do it...
sky2k, I had some driver issues with my mt4g too.
Try this:
Download USBDeview - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
Download the drivers for your phone from HTC - http://www.htc.com/us/support/t-mobile-mytouch-4g/downloads/
Run USBDeview AS ADMINISTRATOR. List all drivers in alphabetical order. Remove any and all associated with your mytouch 4g.
Reinstall drivers via HTC Sync software. Please let me know how this works for you.
Try to connect the phone with both the SD and SIM cards removed.
well guys im still having issues connecting via USB... but...
I found something to let me connect to ADB via WIFI so using it I got everything pushed and I am now S-off... so I am extremely pleased... that said i would "like" to be able to plug in and mount the sdcard/run adb but if I cant i can deal with my work arounds...
