Hi guys
Ive had the G1 since very early on and for me its the first phone that i havent felt the urge to replace after a couple of months due to getting bored with it.
Now my contract runs out on 27th August so im due an upgrade from the 27th of this month.
Are there any really really good high spec android phones (ive seen the desire but its been out a while now so its a bit old) available in the UK or any that are upcoming that i havent heard about.
All I want is a 1ghz processor, 4 inch -ish screen, nice camera and ability to root and add custom roms.
Also what new android phones out in America are there that i can use over here as Ive noticed that in America theres a new android phones nearly week lol
Thanks
You really don't keep up on Android news, huh? Read a blog! Seriously!
At any rate, there are a lot of mid range and entry level android devices popping up, but no serious power device just yet. Lots of rumors about a heavy hitter coming in November, but that's not August.
agree. wait till android 3.0 gingerbread to see what to get. better to wait it out for a few more months than 18 months of regret
My contract also runs out on 26th August. I was thinking to go for the HTC Desire. Its a nice phone with more RAM than the Nexus One.
Patience is the way to go
Wait until September and November... T-Mobile USA will be getting the new high end standard of smart phones:
Dual core snapdragon
3.7-4.3 inch screens
HSPA+ (maximum speed of 21mbps)
Android 3 Gingerbread yummmm
Front Facing Camera
Qwerty
Just to be an asshole.. no locked boot loader like Motorola phones
Blackman how do u know this?
You better not be messing with my emotions Maan!

I'm curious where you read this as well.
Yeah, i heard a rumor about HTC Desire HD with 4.3" display. Shall I wait for this? Thinking...lets see what happens
Well.... It might just be real
Well I am going to post all my favorited links as of now...Here we go!
**Note**
HTC Vision is a different phone from Project Emerald.
This info may be false but, if T-Mobile pulls it off we have a few winners.

Sorry for the late post. Just got back on this wonderful site.
Ah.
Vision and Twist.
Twist will suck imho. Big internal memory, but sidekicks never were anything to get excited about. I don't know, though. It might actually be a nice phone.
HTC Vision is falling right with the Slide, Evo, and Incredible. Good phones, but I'll wait for the next one up.
Theres also some Samsung Galaxy S phones either out or coming out now.... each big US carrier has a slightly different version... 1Ghz CPU , 4" SUPER AMOLED screen.... I think a 5mp camera... not sure about RAM... 16GB internal memory....some have a front facing camera and flash also... sprints is going to have a qwerty keyboard...
op im in the same boat as you
i have a feeling that by September/ November a qwerty device with a faster then snap dragon processor will be released.
i just wish that there was more info about what was coming out in the future, it would help with what phone i would get now, my g1 is definitely dying a slow painful death lol.
Samsung Vibrant
Sounds like you need the Samsung Galaxy S aka Samsung Vibrant from T-Mobile.

I'm going to be changing providers soon to Sprint. I've been on T-Mobile for the longest time. Had a Nexus One but sold it due to financial woes.
Anyhoo... I'm looking at the Samsung Epic 4G and it seems to be the nicest phone I've seen yet on Sprint. I don't like the EVO, at all, and the EVO with a keyboard is too small for me.
Thoughts on Samsung? Thoughts on this phone overall? I have played with them a bit (a couple of co-workers have them) and, though I'm disappointed that they don't have the 2.2 Update yet... I'll live. I haven't had a smart phone at all for several months now.
I'll be getting it at the end of next week, if the Epic is what I decide on.
If you want a high end one, and you don't want the evo, get the epic. Otherwise, for sprint ID android, get the Optimus S.
Sent from The Chaotic Void.
Well, I have both the Evo and Epic, but I would sell my Evo before I sold my Epic. Just because when the source code drops for the Epic, CM6 +CM7 + overclocked- undervolted kernels etc... will make this phone shine like it should have been 5 months ago.
epic or evo
Id wait as long as possible because sprint will be dropping some new phones somtime this quarter. I know one of them being windows phone7. The Evo is outdated to me, the epic isn't well supported but still the best phone imo. Evo shift close 2nd.

Agreed. Dual core phones are just around the corner and Nvidia is releasing its Tegra 3 Quad core chip this fall. Buying a single core phone right now is not in your best interest.

The device, dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S2 and internally codenamed "Seine," is said to have a 1GHz dual core processor, a 4.3 or 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, an 8 MP camera, NFC chip, and will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

I see no difference. All manufacturers do it. Sounds like a double standard. No device has 2.3. I can name a few devices that have 2.1 or lower with a promise to update, and they all are coming out with newer devices.

The difference is that when this phone launched it was launched under the guise that it would receive Froyo in a timely manner. Now 5 months later they haven't updated it yet. The more phones they release, the less incentive they have to update older devices. They gain nothing financially from updating devices to newer versions of Android. A small percentage of people, at most in the high single digits, actually care/know what version of Android the phone is running. Even if they wrote off this group of people and these people never bought Samsung again, they gain business by constantly introducing new shiny phones for the remaining 90+% to buy.
That is why I am concerned with them releasing new awesome phones while ours remain on Android 2.1.
Regardless how long they took they still kept their end of the bargain. Look st the mytouch slide. They are speculating someone after march for their 2.2 upgrade. So HTC should get the same flack. Yet I don't see it. Motorola did the same thing with the droid X. they brought out 2 devices with 2.2 while droid X users waited. See what I am talking about? People tend to promote another manufacturer without actually looking at times. They all do the same thing and sometimes it falls under the radar.
The best android phone for sprint is not the one I have (epic), but the one that has the best specs today. Don't believe anything sprint says about future software updates unless they put in writing with a specific release date. Sprint are the biggest gd liars when it comes to selling phones.

The epic is a much better phone but as you can tell with all the froyo post samsung and sprint cant seem to provide us with an actual update. That had never been a problem with any htc I have ever owned.
that's the only reason I say evo.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
If you can live without an official Froyo for an indeterminate period of time, or are willing to try custom ROMs, then go for it. The Epic is a great piece of hardware, I really like mine. Then again, there'll be some new hardware coming to Sprint in the near future I'm sure.. might be better to wait another month or two if you can stand it.
updates are nice...but if Google is really trying to push this gaming stuff, then thats when the Evo gets killed. They added a lot of things in Gingerbread for gaming but none of that is going to help the Evo out. The Evo with Gingerbread still can't play Dungeon Defenders while the Epic on 2.1 can...so really, Gingerbread is just an update that gives the Evo the Epic experience (because Gingerbread really does feel like 2.2.1 on the Epic).
And there are so many other things wrong with the Evo as well....main thing is 4G and battery life. The Evo doesnt even report the right battery percentages. You can be on 100% then go into recovery, come out of recovery and be at 96%...go back into recovery and come out of it and be at 98% -.-. The battery is also a slippery slope. Once the phone heats up, there's absolutely no way of cooling it down unless you stop EVERYTHING you're doing. And everything heats it up, and it only takes 20 mins of usage to go from 80 to +95 degrees. They do have the dev community and kernels, but the kernels only help with the sleeping (barely). They dont really help with actual usage because of the slippery slope.
Also the Epic is a true 4G phone. It treats 4G more like 3G than WiFi. With the Evo, once you connect to 4G, it runs nonstop, which is why people thought 4G was a guzzler and thats why I was afraid to use it on my Epic. but the Epic actually times it out when not in use and starts it back up once in use, saves a ton of battery.
So Hardware: Epic wins
Software: Evo wins
Overall: Epic
Now the Evo wins software because of the updates and dev community, but let me put it like this....I had the Evo since August and since August Ive tried literally all roms and kernels...damn near every different combination...I followed every tip provided that promised better performance and battery life...and at the end of the day my phone was basically the same as it was out of the box. I was happy because I've never seen any better and thought that the Evo was the best out there. After one day of using the Epic, I can't go back. I just flashed DK28 and that experience alone is way better than anything the Evo has had to offer. Performance = top notch. Battery life = top notch. Its just perfect. This phone is simply perfect and I honestly don't think that HTC should be allowed to make anymore Android phones.
Morning!
Not that I am one to dance on graves or imply than someone is 'gettingonabit'....but the inevitable truth is that our little Hero's have been overtaken by newer, faster and more powerful models with smaller chins.
So with upgrades, including mine, looming I'm asking... What handset will be next? Why that handset? Or will you be waiting for something even shiniererer to come out?
I for one am being drawn to the Desire Z although I'm not that keen ok it's looks. My ideal would be an Android version of HTC 7 Pro.
Ever since I was literally mugged of my T-mobile Vario, I've really missed a physical keyboard. I'm also hoping for something with a decent battery life, so the Desire HD has fallen like Naomi Campbell in high heels and is out it the running straight away.
Look forward to your replies, peeps!

I'm starting to look around a bit right now too! My upgrade isn't due until about July, but figure unless some nice new phones come out in the next few months (which is highly likely, and they will probably have a price to boot), most of what I'll be looking at on contract is out now!
Desire HD - I like the power but not too keen on the size.
Desire Z - I like the size but it has an 800MHz CPU which is probably ample for my needs.
Galaxy S - I really like HTC Sense, infact it pains me I use a custom ROM on my Hero because Sense is just too slow for me.
I'm even considering a W7 phone - maybe, but I really love the customisability, and geekyness of the Android phones !
my next handset doesnt quite exist yet. I'll retire the hero when I see, dual core, notification light and either a slide out keyboard or a screen above 4.1 inches .. Im hoping htc will bring it.. think I will avoid moto almost regardless as I enjoy custom roms which have kept my hero fresh, to be honest Im upgrading because I cant type easily on the smallish screen/ with lack of physical keyboard.. love the phone otherwise
I decided to take the plunge to WP7 and bought a HTC HD 7 on O2 pay as you go ..as I had never used a Winmob phone before
I love the Big screen and gaming is good although pricey
The phone has problems with the sound and camera but otherwise is a lovely phone
Also being WP7 the apps are slowly trickling in so have to be patient.
My Hero is due for upgrade around 2 months time
so the options I am thinking about are
LG Optimus 2x - Dual core
Motorola Atrix - Dual Core
Nexus S - all for the love of google and front facing camera
Samsung galaxy S - front facing camera
Desire HD - or if Htc comes with any new phones
Nokia N9 - If its worth it
Nokia N8 - Was a nokia fan all along untill Htc came up
Iphone 4 - ZZZzzzzzzzz
I hope HTC seriously comes out with New phones or even Nokia love them hardwares
With MWC in a couple of weeks, you'd be crazy to make any decisions now
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc has also, today, just taken my interest too! Due for around March/April release, looks nice, has Android 2.3 and a descent camera by the looks of things!
I have no idea but defently a HTC. Easy rootable
I am waiting to see which phone takes Feeyo
My next handset doesnt exist yet
I want something the same size as the HTC Hero.
Bigger battery (1800amps+ would be great!)
1ghz ish (Not dualcore!)
dedicated gpu would be nice but dont care too much.
I dont care how fast it is (rooting can always get them faster ) but I want the battery to last well before I root. That way it will get even better!
Also with a good Dev community... In fact put that to the top of the list after the past 2 days clusterfuck.... >_>

Hi. Hero is my first android device. I am using it for more than a year and I have started to think about replacing it with something new. First of all I want to say that hero is a brilliant device and I am very happy that I have bought it in september '09. Secondly, I expect from my next cell to have a bigger screen with a bigger resolution, better CPU, more memory and ... a camera flash light.
The DHD is a very nice looking device but it is too big and the battery is weak.
Galaxy S is too shiny and plastic, but the gaming performance and speed is WOW! However it is a Samsung and I have bad memories with them.
So a perfect replacement for my Hero would be the Desire, but .... Motorola and LG are making a big performance leap forward with their dual-core devices. So buying now a Desire wouldn't be smart, cause in a year's time it will probably be like my current hero (quite good, but with many limitations).
So I am looking forward to MWC where there will be announced a replacement for the Desire and I think that will be my next android device.

You took the words right out of my mouth!
Something I am looking for in my next phone is ANT+ compatibility. Sony Ericsson is the only one announced so far, but I am not keen about them. A samsung or a HTC would be nice. I'm on my 4th HTC at this stage.
Well following MWC nothing really grabbed me.
There are three phones around that I would consider but:
Desire Z: is just a bit crude design wise for me; two tone grey, patches of metal etc. Plus the spec will quickly get dated.
Pro 7: Nice tough looking phone but Windows OS. I would actually consider it but just can't see it having the flexibility and apps of android.
Nokia E7: LOVE the form of this handset. If the little green android was running it I would get it in a heartbeat. But sadly it's Symbian, although a new version, I'm really not sure I'd be happy.
So generally feeling at bit miffed- right handset with wrong OS or wrong handset with right OS.
Might have to consider giving up the keyboard

I'm thinking Nexus S or Galaxy S2...
One thing for sure is this time I'm not tying myself up in a 24 months contract...
In a lot of cases it can work cheaper taking a monthly rolling contract (costs vary between £10-£20 instead of your general £35) and then buying the phone separately. With this option I would however have to downgrade my ambitions...
I could always go for a Droid X HD10 lol...
im going to get a galaxy s 2, really wanted htc to bring out a new device to compete with samsung and lg's new phones
Still looking out for what my next handset it's going to be.
Hopefully, it will be lot's of fun (that is, not bored) like Hero, where there's lots of community forum support and plenty of ROMs available from developers every few weeks/months to flash
Looks like its finally getting a replacement:
Unconfirmed rumours obtained from Pocketnow and a DLNA certificate for the device indicate that the upcoming HTC Kingdom is likely to be sold by Sprint as the HTC Hero 4G. Apparently, there are also indications of the device appearing in the EXIF data on photo-sharing sites.
We came across the HTC Kingdom in early May when a ROM of the device was leaked by the Chinese blog 911sniper. At the time not much was known about the device save for its qHD (540x960px) screen. Later Pocketnow released some updated specs indicating that the HTC Kingdom had a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM7630 processor, 768MB RAM, a 5MP camera with 720p video recording, and the device would launch with Android 2.3.3.
The rumours suggest that the HTC Kingdom will be launched by Sprint as the HTC Hero 4G, the carrier to originally launch the 528MHz, 3.2-inch HTC Hero, running one of the earliest Android builds (1.5 Cupcake). The Hero 4G has already passed FCC certification so it is likely we will be seeing the device sooner rather than later.

I just texted my dad that if I fix my hero (digitizer in it is bad) then I will keep it until this phone comes out, if I can't fix it, I'm getting his evo.
Most sources are saying single-core... I hope it's all lies. But then again I wish it could be the 1st triple core phone and be a REAL Hero! I know... I dream too big.
single core is by no means a turn-off to me. Id say given where its likely to be priced, this could be a great replacement for the hero. Sure dual core sounds all well and good, but Im buying a phone for a phone/pda and not a computer replacement.
Sweet ... love the Hero
I love my HTC Hero as well. I'm on the fence about maybe switching to the photon 4g I can get my 2 year upgrade August 1st.
I just flashed/upgraded my Hero for the second time from Froyo to Gingerbread a few weeks ago and I finally think I got all the kinks out worked out. Plus I just told Sprint I would stay with them for another 2 years.
Seeing how the HTC Kingdom would be coming to Sprint as the Hero 4G, this is tempting but I think I will stick with my Hero for a bit longer. I love this phone. When I saw the HTC Legend awhile back I thought that would be my next phone but sadly it was not on Sprint.
I just love the idea of a track ball on a phone that is one of the main reasons why I bought the Hero cause it had a track ball and I didn't want a Blackberry.
Heres hoping Sprint does release more Hero phones in the future maybe with a trackball as well...I just hope the trackball smart phone isn't dead yet and companies make more with trackballs on them.

I love the trackball, too. Especially on smallish screens like my current Hero. I think it's dead though, and I doubt we'll see it again primarily because it takes up a lot of space and requires a much bigger bezel which reduces screen size.

I was just thinking what phone should I go for after my sweet HTC HD2.. I am proud owner of HD2 for 3 years now and I still love it for what it does even now.. But as you know the next gen phones are coming out every other day with front facing cam, near field communication etc which are hardware upgrades not possible to be implemented in our HD2, I was wondering what would be the next best phone to move on and which would have a good XDA support.. I too am (still) a proud HD2 owner. That phone rocks, and always will.
I upgraded in December though, to the SGS2 and am thrilled with it.
I swore I would leave it stock, for a really long time...and 4 days later began with the flashing/upgrading/modding again.
There aren't quite so many options for the S2, as the HD2 but only b/c on the HD2 I could flash winMo in various versions, and Android etc etc etc. You know the drill. Mine doesn't have NFC, but really I read an article last week that said that there are sth like 25 stores in America where you can pay with NFC. Bah, who needs it.
If you can afford it, and money's no thing, grab a Nexus. If you're on a budget (like me) and you want a phone that you'll still be stoked with (and absolutely thrilled about the price) check into the SGS2. I'm an Android lover, so I'm diggin' it.
Good luck!

But what are the chances of scoring one for < €350?
The SGS2 has a major price advantage over anything out now, or coming out in the next year.
Thanks guys for the replies.. I know SGS2 is good but I don't like Samsung's build quality.. I didnt know about HTC supreme.. Looks interesting.. and I always love the HTC's solid build quality..
Waiting for the Tegra 3 devices, for sure! I waited for 2 months for the HD2 to become available and get delivered. Looks to me a bit longer for these epic devices.
Was tempted by the Vivid/Raider/Velocity for about a day, until I saw the Edge/Supreme.
I will be sad to see the mighty HD2 go, but it will go on to a worthy user.
Hi Guys,
I used to have an HD2 and a SGS2. I now have a htc sensation XL and im really proud of it. The quality of HTC is always the best for me. It has a 1.5 gHz processor but a large screen. Its very fast and you have beats audio. If you were happy with your HD2 I think the Sensation XL is the best option for you. The galaxy s2 had so many random reboots. I tried every version on it but nothing works perfectly.
i moved to a galaxy note
I bought the sensation back in October and have been more than satisfied with it. It is a very solid phone and has enough power to hold you over for at least a couple years. Just barely have they started coming out with apps that really use the dual core processors, so I wouldn't worry about having more than what the sensation has. And to my understanding the processor chip is the EXACT one used in XE so overclocking from stock 1.2 to a blazing 1.5 ghz is no problem. Some kernels are available with up to a little over 1.7 ghz so speed is definitely not an issue.
been using HD2 for 4months now and this is a legendary phone...
I'm always looking for a 2nd hand phone because i'm still studying..
I think SGS2 will be my next choice when the price reduced like when i buy my HD2....

I think i am just stopping with my HD2 when it's broken.
And then move on to another HTC phone, but it HAS to be an android phone.
I just moved from my HD2 to a Sensation. It does not have quite the development that the HD2 has, but it has the same screen size with with better resolution. I have definitely become an HTC fan and I am pleased with the Sensation. Also, they can be found for a little over $200.

I like the Samsung Galaxy Note and its 5.3" screen but I'm waiting to see if HTC bring out an equivalent to the Note but with ICS pre-installed.

Alright everyone, you knew it was coming sooner or later so here it is.
There are a lot of people looking for the next upgrade and still unsure of which way to go. With the recent announcement of the Galaxy S Blaze for T-Mobile we all have yet another upgrade choice. So let's all have fun with and put in your input on this new device or simply say which path you are going to go for upgrade.
Quick rundown of what the known and rumored stats are.
1.5Ghz Dual Core Snapdragon S3
42Mbps capable radio
SAMOLED+ screen (rumored to be 720p)
1GB of Ram
SD Card capable (up to 32GB)
Android 2.3.7 (rumored)
At this point I still really want a Nexus but at this rate the GSM US version won't come out to any Carrier before 2nd half of the year at the earliest and if the Blaze has the same screen size it will be a faster Nexus and will be a good competition, aside form having to wait for T-mob for Software updates.
For me the HTC Amaze is not even considerable because of the display and bootloader locking on it. I also don't want the qHD resolution when I can easily get a full 720p display.
I have been debating the Galaxy SII. The two things on this phone that put me off are the low screen res and the display quality issues many have had issues with.
After the Global Mobile Device Conference the Blaze's full specs are supposed to be out and I will wait for that to make a final decision. With preliminary specs this will be my device of choice, unless the GSM GNex comes out for the US with warranty.
This is more of "when do I qualify for an upgrade" so it kind of pertains to the Galaxy S Blaze. Just some information for those who picked up the Vibrant on launch day (July 15th, 2010), signed a two year contract, and hasn't use their upgrade since.
Source: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1681
Early Upgrade:
12 - 17 months since last upgrade (July 2011 - December 2011)
Early Upgrade Plus:
18 - 21 months since last upgrade (January 2012 - April 2012)
Same as New:
22 - 24 months since last upgrade (May 2012 - July 2012)
After July 15th, you're free to leave T-Mobile.
The tiered discounts are percentage based (I think) so discounts vary from phone to phone. The best way to find out is to log into your T-Mobile account online. I'm going to wait until May to use my upgrade to get a full discount. Unless I decide to leave T-Mobile, but I do have 5 lines and no one can come close to T-Mobile's prices.
I forgot to Mention, I will be using the upgrade for my Wife's phone as hers has been up for a few months now. Since she does not care about getting the latest greatest and the Vibe will be a major upgrade for her, I get to upgrade phones more often if desired than the regular 2 year.
Wished I was that fortunate, but my wife claims she needs a good camera phone for her blog and Facebook updates (she has the MyTouch 4G Slide).
I am hoping to pick up SG2 for $0 when i am eligible for upgrade in June.
I got my Vibrant launch week (upgrading from a G1 I got on launch day in 2008). I'll wait and see what the specs are for the Blaze (screen size, etc). I can't see going back to Gingerbread after running ICS on the Vibrant though, so the Blaze would have to be running ICS before I would even consider it.
I had thought I would be in a rush to upgrade as soon as I was eligible for a full upgrade, but as well as ICS is running on my phone now, I don't feel as much need to do it. I'll wait for something really good. Whether that's the Blaze, the SGS III, or something else, I don't know yet.
I have my upgrade right now and I'm still considering whether to get the SGS 2 or wait for the Blaze
The Vibrant will last me just fine until the SGSIII.

Of course T-Mobile will get the GS3. They will get it about 1 full year after Euro Release and at least 3 months after the rest of the US carriers. At least if the GS2 and now GNex are any indication of how things are going for T-Mobile phones nowadays.
I can't go back to Gingerbread either. ICS is way too awesome. Battery life is a day and a half, and ICS Passion is smooth as butter.
This phone has awesome hardware, but I am NEVER buying a carrier locked phone or going into a contract ever, ever again.
TMobile will not support our phones with upgrades past a few months. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...
Couldn't agree more.

Well, Blaze details are out now. Gingerbread and a 4" Super AMOLED screen means its a no-go for me. This is looking like a mid-range phone in today's market.

Not necessarily. It's basically an SGSII with a smaller screen and faster processor, which means it's going to be a speed demon of a phone, with a high res screen. I think it seems like a pretty great option, and I am not going to rule it out yet. Regardless, definitely upper-end.
Any word on y/n for a camera flash? I need one of those on my next phone.

...you...you can't get fooled again! (?)
Im gonna be staying away from this one too disimilar to the international versions and so likely not as strong of a dev community as we see here.
I thought the g2x would be a speed demon too with a dual core processor and vanilla gb. And it sucked.
I'll be on vibrant until something really legit comes out with jelly bean or something.

JB will be a Tablet release like Honeycomb was.
Also the Blaze does not have an HD screen it will have a duplicate screen to the Vibrant. 800x480 with same dpi and everything, except it will be a touch smaller, by .1 inch
I really hope the T999 comes out soon and will have a 4.3+ inch screen. So far so stats look better on that little diddy.

No Trolling,
There was a quite a bit of scuttlebutt on the internet about the SGH-T999. Many thought it was going to the Galaxy S Blaze but now it is obviously not.
Here is one of the many links referring to the UA profile found somewhere on Samsung's site. Here is a link to the news story. http://www.tmonews.com/2012/01/what...-t999/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook
Here is a bit of news about the FAA wi-fi certification for the same.
