Hi guys
Ive had the G1 since very early on and for me its the first phone that i havent felt the urge to replace after a couple of months due to getting bored with it.
Now my contract runs out on 27th August so im due an upgrade from the 27th of this month.
Are there any really really good high spec android phones (ive seen the desire but its been out a while now so its a bit old) available in the UK or any that are upcoming that i havent heard about.
All I want is a 1ghz processor, 4 inch -ish screen, nice camera and ability to root and add custom roms.
Also what new android phones out in America are there that i can use over here as Ive noticed that in America theres a new android phones nearly week lol
Thanks
You really don't keep up on Android news, huh? Read a blog! Seriously!
At any rate, there are a lot of mid range and entry level android devices popping up, but no serious power device just yet. Lots of rumors about a heavy hitter coming in November, but that's not August.
agree. wait till android 3.0 gingerbread to see what to get. better to wait it out for a few more months than 18 months of regret
My contract also runs out on 26th August. I was thinking to go for the HTC Desire. Its a nice phone with more RAM than the Nexus One.
Patience is the way to go
Wait until September and November... T-Mobile USA will be getting the new high end standard of smart phones:
Dual core snapdragon
3.7-4.3 inch screens
HSPA+ (maximum speed of 21mbps)
Android 3 Gingerbread yummmm
Front Facing Camera
Qwerty
Just to be an asshole.. no locked boot loader like Motorola phones
Blackman how do u know this?
You better not be messing with my emotions Maan!
;^)

I'm curious where you read this as well.
Yeah, i heard a rumor about HTC Desire HD with 4.3" display. Shall I wait for this? Thinking...lets see what happens
Well.... It might just be real
Well I am going to post all my favorited links as of now...Here we go!
**Note**
HTC Vision is a different phone from Project Emerald.
This info may be false but, if T-Mobile pulls it off we have a few winners.

Sorry for the late post. Just got back on this wonderful site.
Ah.
Vision and Twist.
Twist will suck imho. Big internal memory, but sidekicks never were anything to get excited about. I don't know, though. It might actually be a nice phone.
HTC Vision is falling right with the Slide, Evo, and Incredible. Good phones, but I'll wait for the next one up.
Theres also some Samsung Galaxy S phones either out or coming out now.... each big US carrier has a slightly different version... 1Ghz CPU , 4" SUPER AMOLED screen.... I think a 5mp camera... not sure about RAM... 16GB internal memory....some have a front facing camera and flash also... sprints is going to have a qwerty keyboard...
op im in the same boat as you
i have a feeling that by September/ November a qwerty device with a faster then snap dragon processor will be released.
i just wish that there was more info about what was coming out in the future, it would help with what phone i would get now, my g1 is definitely dying a slow painful death lol.
Samsung Vibrant
Sounds like you need the Samsung Galaxy S aka Samsung Vibrant from T-Mobile.
ok what I thought was stupid is the LG optimus S has the 90% same specs of the hero how the hell can it get 2.2 and our hardware our htc hero is 1-2 years old(i think 1) not even been in for long enough and it cant get 2.2 when LG optimus can?! (offical 2.2 froyo not the roms) so stupid someone should just port the LG optimus S to the hero and then we can tell htc the 3rd finger

I think the primary issue is using Sense. Since the Hero is a Sense device, so on top of getting 2.2 perfectly functioning, they have to modify Sense to be compatible as well, and that is just something they don't want to invest in.

Lol Samsung support their top-tier Galaxy line is not a good comparison against HTC and their low-mid range Hero. Samsung was responsible for one of the worst debacles in Android support history, promising 2.1 for Behold II users and then all of a sudden abandoning support after releasing 1.6. HTC is much more consistent, not to mention their build quality is the best in the industry.

Yes, the MyTouch 3G is made by HTC. MyTouch is just T-Mobile's branding, it is originally the HTC Sapphire or Magic. The MyTouch 3G and Hero are very similar devices, actually.. same CPU, similar amounts of RAM, etc.

The Galaxy-S series is their flagship more "high-end" series of phones, not to mention way newer, not really a fair thing to compare (they are doing great with not rolling out 2.2 updates for their new phones, that's for sure ).
Also, why are you not blaming Sprint at least a little bit about this? They are the carrier, afterall. Hero could receive 2.2 if they wanted it to, I'm sure.

The Samsung Moment, on par with the Hero with a little better hardware, isn't getting 2.2 so your argument for Sammy being better is invalid, sir. Also, the Legend is getting updated, and when it does, the devs will be all over it like a hobo on a Ham sandwich. Then the Hero will have sense 2.2. If that's your thing. I'm quite happy with my AOSP rom, though.

Googling phone specs, the Hero and the Optimus S are very similar hardware-wise. Not sure about the MT3G, I didn't search for that one...
But as c00ller mentioned above, the Optimus S isn't running SenseUI, hence why it already has Android 2.2. Developing a fully-working 2.2 SenseUI release takes HTC longer to work out. And I'm sure HTC wouldn't let Sprint release plain regular stock Android 2.2 (without SenseUI) for a Sense-based device, which is why the Hero doesn't have it even though it's already available on other similar phones.
I like HTC too much to leave, and it's already official they're not releasing 2.2 for the hero

As a former moment owner, I agree the hardware is better, the processor is faster. but the radio lock-ups (total phone and data lock up only resolved by pulling the battery), poor gps, exceptionally bad batter life and other software/hardware integration failures were too much to handle. Stock or Custom Rom-- it didn't matter. 3D performance is abysmal on the Moment. You think angry birds is bad on the hero? Try 1 frame every 1-3 seconds on the Moment.
As bad as the problems with the phone were, when it worked it worked very nice. Working was interrupted by very significant bugs like the radio lock, which happened daily (heavy data user/exchange/streaming/etc).
I recently warranty swapped the moment over the hero and couldn't be happier

I have to agree with you, T-Mobile made the call in regards to their "No Phone Left Behind" policy. I assume that they must pay extra to get HTC to support "legacy" devices. Sprint on the other hand has decided to focus on their new phones. You'd think the support would last at least as long as the contract you sign with them. That would make most sense.
My wife upgraded from her MyTouch 3G (T-Mobile) to the Hero (Sprint), on which which I quickly rooted and installed CM6 Froyo. The Hero runs 2.2 beautifully, tethers with Barnacle (Hulu and Netflix on road trips!) but the fact is that it is noticeably slower in EVERYTHING compared to the LG Optimus S, especially games (comparisons done live in store).
They have similar CPUs on paper, but the Optimus S is definitely faster in practice. It's like comparing two laptops because they both have Intel CPUs. One is a Celeron, the other is a Core i5.
I'm getting mine on Black Friday at Best Buy for $1.00.
Optimus S has a dual core
The reason that the Optimus S performs better in practice is that it actually has a dual core processor 600 MHz application / 400 MHz modem processor. Look at LG's site. Click on the specifications tab.
http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/LG-LS670-Purple.jsp
Oh yeah, mine arrived at my house yesterday, and is waiting for me to activate it when I get home. I am still keeping my hero for development purposes though.
Being a former moment owner, I think I'll stick with the other manufacturers for quite some time. My hero runs every bit as smooth as my moment and with no data lockups. Had to do battery pull 1-2 times a day, without wifi running at all (which was claimed to be the issues). Now I get every text including all my picture mail not just one every once in a while. Crap radio. Had an LG years ago. It was the original Chocolate with Verizon. Went through four in a year. Circuit board fried and they couldn't figure out why. Little leery about LG now too. Point is, I like the way my HTC runs so think I'll stick with them a while. H
I'm going to be changing providers soon to Sprint. I've been on T-Mobile for the longest time. Had a Nexus One but sold it due to financial woes.
Anyhoo... I'm looking at the Samsung Epic 4G and it seems to be the nicest phone I've seen yet on Sprint. I don't like the EVO, at all, and the EVO with a keyboard is too small for me.
Thoughts on Samsung? Thoughts on this phone overall? I have played with them a bit (a couple of co-workers have them) and, though I'm disappointed that they don't have the 2.2 Update yet... I'll live. I haven't had a smart phone at all for several months now.
I'll be getting it at the end of next week, if the Epic is what I decide on.
If you want a high end one, and you don't want the evo, get the epic. Otherwise, for sprint ID android, get the Optimus S.
Sent from The Chaotic Void.
Well, I have both the Evo and Epic, but I would sell my Evo before I sold my Epic. Just because when the source code drops for the Epic, CM6 +CM7 + overclocked- undervolted kernels etc... will make this phone shine like it should have been 5 months ago.
epic or evo
Id wait as long as possible because sprint will be dropping some new phones somtime this quarter. I know one of them being windows phone7. The Evo is outdated to me, the epic isn't well supported but still the best phone imo. Evo shift close 2nd.

Agreed. Dual core phones are just around the corner and Nvidia is releasing its Tegra 3 Quad core chip this fall. Buying a single core phone right now is not in your best interest.

The device, dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S2 and internally codenamed "Seine," is said to have a 1GHz dual core processor, a 4.3 or 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, an 8 MP camera, NFC chip, and will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

I see no difference. All manufacturers do it. Sounds like a double standard. No device has 2.3. I can name a few devices that have 2.1 or lower with a promise to update, and they all are coming out with newer devices.

The difference is that when this phone launched it was launched under the guise that it would receive Froyo in a timely manner. Now 5 months later they haven't updated it yet. The more phones they release, the less incentive they have to update older devices. They gain nothing financially from updating devices to newer versions of Android. A small percentage of people, at most in the high single digits, actually care/know what version of Android the phone is running. Even if they wrote off this group of people and these people never bought Samsung again, they gain business by constantly introducing new shiny phones for the remaining 90+% to buy.
That is why I am concerned with them releasing new awesome phones while ours remain on Android 2.1.
Regardless how long they took they still kept their end of the bargain. Look st the mytouch slide. They are speculating someone after march for their 2.2 upgrade. So HTC should get the same flack. Yet I don't see it. Motorola did the same thing with the droid X. they brought out 2 devices with 2.2 while droid X users waited. See what I am talking about? People tend to promote another manufacturer without actually looking at times. They all do the same thing and sometimes it falls under the radar.
The best android phone for sprint is not the one I have (epic), but the one that has the best specs today. Don't believe anything sprint says about future software updates unless they put in writing with a specific release date. Sprint are the biggest gd liars when it comes to selling phones.

The epic is a much better phone but as you can tell with all the froyo post samsung and sprint cant seem to provide us with an actual update. That had never been a problem with any htc I have ever owned.
that's the only reason I say evo.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
If you can live without an official Froyo for an indeterminate period of time, or are willing to try custom ROMs, then go for it. The Epic is a great piece of hardware, I really like mine. Then again, there'll be some new hardware coming to Sprint in the near future I'm sure.. might be better to wait another month or two if you can stand it.
updates are nice...but if Google is really trying to push this gaming stuff, then thats when the Evo gets killed. They added a lot of things in Gingerbread for gaming but none of that is going to help the Evo out. The Evo with Gingerbread still can't play Dungeon Defenders while the Epic on 2.1 can...so really, Gingerbread is just an update that gives the Evo the Epic experience (because Gingerbread really does feel like 2.2.1 on the Epic).
And there are so many other things wrong with the Evo as well....main thing is 4G and battery life. The Evo doesnt even report the right battery percentages. You can be on 100% then go into recovery, come out of recovery and be at 96%...go back into recovery and come out of it and be at 98% -.-. The battery is also a slippery slope. Once the phone heats up, there's absolutely no way of cooling it down unless you stop EVERYTHING you're doing. And everything heats it up, and it only takes 20 mins of usage to go from 80 to +95 degrees. They do have the dev community and kernels, but the kernels only help with the sleeping (barely). They dont really help with actual usage because of the slippery slope.
Also the Epic is a true 4G phone. It treats 4G more like 3G than WiFi. With the Evo, once you connect to 4G, it runs nonstop, which is why people thought 4G was a guzzler and thats why I was afraid to use it on my Epic. but the Epic actually times it out when not in use and starts it back up once in use, saves a ton of battery.
So Hardware: Epic wins
Software: Evo wins
Overall: Epic
Now the Evo wins software because of the updates and dev community, but let me put it like this....I had the Evo since August and since August Ive tried literally all roms and kernels...damn near every different combination...I followed every tip provided that promised better performance and battery life...and at the end of the day my phone was basically the same as it was out of the box. I was happy because I've never seen any better and thought that the Evo was the best out there. After one day of using the Epic, I can't go back. I just flashed DK28 and that experience alone is way better than anything the Evo has had to offer. Performance = top notch. Battery life = top notch. Its just perfect. This phone is simply perfect and I honestly don't think that HTC should be allowed to make anymore Android phones.
On engaged it shows what HTC has announced and they either have 2.2 2.3 or 2.4 all with sense, and their "Facebook" phones have the new sense with 2.3.3 and it definitely looks like the Evo could run it as the Facebook phone and wildfire s only have 600mhz, granted its the new process and such, but we should be about on par.
The new phones are a disappointment to me, with last year specs pretty much. Just the new 1ghz processors and 768mb RAM. Here's to hoping CTIA has something...

I don't see why everyone is so down. First, new devices do not have to be announced at conferences. They can put together their own event any time they want. Second, there's a high probability that the Evo's successor will in fact be announced at CTIA. That's when the Evo was announced. And finally, it's not necessarily a bad thing that the new device isn't announced yet. It might mean we get a dual core processor or something else really cool that just isn't ready yet. The Incredible S has a second generation, single core, 1GHz Snapdragon. It's certainly better than what's in the Evo, but I'd gladly wait until the summer if it means I get dual core, and maybe even Ice Cream out of the box.

Darn, I was kind of hoping to hang on to my evo for more then just a couple years. It would be nice to see more long term support with these new devices, but at the speed that technology advances, it doesnt really suprise me.
I've got my fingers crossed for CTIA, really putting my faith in Sprint for that one.
As for 2.3...we already have roms for it and androidball ported a honeycomb rom to his Evo a few days ago (it's around here somewhere).
So, I think we'll be getting our upgrades. Not sure about non XDA, non rooted peoples...but we sure as hell will
I just hope Sprint announces something big at CTIA next month. Fingers crossed for EVO2 announcement, or at least a high end Galaxy-S-2 w/out keyboard, thank you.
And I would like one of these phones come this June, or I might jump ship to the iPhone5, with 4" screen, dual core, new AMOLED + Retina screen, and totally revised iOS5 adding Widgets and Notifications finally.

I've never seen people that get so bored of devices so damned quickly.
They really market technology well don't they?
"OMGZ EYE HAS 2 HAV DAT NU DEVIS TUDAY"
People really need to calm down about the whole Sprint and new phone thing.
It's going to happen.
-The fact that the lack of an "Evo 2" this summer would just be about the most retarded mistake Sprint could make.
-The practically confirmed, although still a "rumor", dual-core WM7 phone.
-The fact that there "is NO CDMA exclusivity" when it comes to the iphone. [Could sprint be waiting for the 4g capable iphone 5 this summer? I would if I were them, At&t and Verizon already has any person who wants the iPhone 4.]
-The likelihood of Sprint getting a WebOS device, or two
-The Blackberry Playbook
-Any Blackberry phones that will come out, that haven't even been talked about yet
And that's just NON-Android based devices!
You're silly if you think that Sprint won't be getting a plethora of Android devices over the next 6 - 12 months.
Android is the hot ticket.
Thus, Sprint, a company that is finally starting to gain customers and wants to continue to pull itself out of the hole its been in, HAS to be apart of that hot ticket.
There's just no way, no how that, coupled with everything I talked about up there, Sprint won't be getting multiple Android devices.
Relax.
Let's also keep in mind that, as sweet as the Atrix and other devices announced at CES are....NONE ARE EVEN OUT YET.
So, take a deep breath, and relax.
My hopes keep being put down after each big phone technology show First was CES in January, and not a thing for Sprint really ( meaning an upgrade to our beloved EVO ). Now it is MWC, and I was hoping for some announcement or rumors of the EVO 2 being in the shadows, with at least some spec's leaked out, but nothing, just some slightly updated HTC phones;
HTC refreshes Android lineup;

The next big phone show is CITA in March, and I believe that is where our EVO made it's first debut. Lets keep fingers and toes crossed for the EVO2 there.

yeah and the specs of those newer phones still dont meet up to the Evo really. as i said in the other thread, the next show is our last hope i guess. Hopefully it will be something along the lines of using the newer snapdragon chips with DRM and well get netflix. anything less would be a disappointment really.
What in the crap. All these other companies are making superphones and HTC just barely upgrades all these phones? There's gotta be something going on here.......
Rumor has it....

Also if I'm not mistaken, HTC sources all their chips from qualcomm and qualcomm just doesn't have a dualcore chip yet so that's what they're waiting on. Can anyone confirm this?

The full next generation HTC phone is codenamed "Pyramid" it will have 1.2ghz dual core...double the RAM...double the memory...better screen technology...
It sounds like the perfect device to be the new EVO2...but the strange thing is that T-Mobile is getting this "Pyramid" for a May launch. At least according to the rumors I read.
Samsung flat out kicked HTC's ass at MWC. No ifs ands or buts about it.
htc's next phone needs to keep hiding, the longer it takes to come out, the better it will be and the evo isn't unbearable yet
No wonder Sprint had a big event for the Echo. There isn't crap out there that will serve as the next flagship phone for Sprint. One last mobile event to go so hopefully I'll have egg on my face.
Check out HTC's page on facebook. Getting ripped to shreds.

Dont meet up to the EVO? What the hell are you talking about? These phones aren't great compared to the new dual core super phones but they are definitely better than the aged EVO.

Let put it all in perspective here. LG, Samsung, and Motorola showed off their v10 and v12 engine cars. HTC add 50 hp to their v8 beast. God help me. Yet, either way anything Samsung comes out with no matter how great the hardware is will be crap. Hence the moment and current galaxy S models that still don't have official Froyo. ;p Sorry I had to take my frustration out on someone.
I have hopes the EVO2 will be announced in March / April. Because Sprint would be silly to keep it too quiet for long otherwise buyers will start looking elsewhere. This Summer some bad ass phones coming out. The HTC Pyramid on T-mobile, and hate to say this but the iPhone5 with 4" screen, dual cote, and a rumored major redesign of iOS adding notifications and widgets. If Sprint doesn't at least announce an EVO2 by June, I will seriously think about that new iPhone5.
It looks like at&t and tmobile will get the nice phones... My mt4g was fast but I prefer my evo.

I do LOVE my EVO, with Myn's RL5 ROM, this phone is a beast, and much better on battery life. But seeing these new devices announced, makes me wonder what we could be playing with soon, I am addicted to cool technology.
I don't want much in an EVO2, mainly a thinner and less bulky device, and hopefully improved battery life, and for sure want GPU acceleration, and a better screen to match something like the Super AMOLED.
But if Sprint keeps quiet on a EVO successor, I will seriously look elsewhere this June. Because come this Summer, the EVO1 will be outdated compared to the other high end devices from Apple, Samsung, Motorola...

Actually the best phone for 2011 will most likely be the Nexus-3.0 due out at the end of the year, it will ship with the newest Android OS, and have some amazing technology from what I hear. But if it is for T-Mobile only, screw that, their service sucks by me, and really blows inside buildings.
I hope the Nexus-3.0 is as future proof as the Nexus-One was, it came out with hardware that was like 6 months ahead of it's time. And I have heard that Motorola wants to get in on the Nexus game.
I am still thinking the top phones for 2011 will be;
- EVO2
- iPhone5
- Nexus-3.0
