Hulu Denies Android 2.2 Flash Player!?!? MUST SEE - Nexus One General

So reading up on this. It is not official that I know of at this moment.
But hulu was a no show for Google I/O 2010, and this was found
TECH.ICRONTIC.COM----Hulu is another big name at the top of everyone’s list when Flash is mentioned, but they’ve decided to sit this one out. Hulu has blocked Android 2.2’s Flash player citing copyright concerns; their content providers don’t want to be seen on any device but the desktop.

PC WORLD.COM---Missing from all of this Flash action, of course, is Hulu. I was really disappointed when I tried-and ultimately failed-to watch an episode of "30 Rock" on the Nexus One. According to Adobe, Hulu does not own distribution rights for their content on mobile devices and therefore cannot stream video to smartphones. With no Hulu on the iPad and no Hulu on your Android phone, isn't time for Hulu to develop an app? Let's hope so.

UPDATE: The news seems to be true, as I am awaiting an email from HULU. Will post ASAP
Update: Hulu is refusing to comment, however you cannot play hulu on android flash. BUT there is a trick...See here

Apparently Hulu doesn't have the rights to broadcast their content to any non-desktop devices. That's something they'll have to sort out with the networks.

They also go on to say that this could very well be a temporary lock as Flash hasn't hit the mobile market in full yet. Once it's out on the handsets (~Jun 17th) that lock will probably be lifted. Also, I wouldn't worry so much. If you have a rooted phone, you can always use a proxy and change your UserAgent to something that is supported.

Change your user agent to desktop (through about:debug) and it loads fine.
The videos play badly though. Audio comes in clear, but the framerate is terrible, more like a slideshow.

Stock Chrome browser. Type that in, hit enter, and go to settings. All the way at the bottom you have the option to change your user agent (among other things) to Android, Desktop (as OSX IIRC), and iPhone.

This is of Froyo, but it's an early non accelerated Flashplayer 10.1

I've read hulu blocks all non-desktop users because they can't control who see's it. Technically I think it is only legal for U.S. residents to watch the shows on hulu and if it is a mobile phone they can't detect where they are.

Sorry to kill your post, but you never see a hulu video working. This actually supports that HULU is not letting us view vids

Hulu is likely finishing their pay subscription licensing issues before rolling out full video support to mobile devices.
I'd be surprised if they werent working on both at the same time. Hopefully we will see the mobile audience addressed when the "new" Hulu is released.

He only had XX amount of time for the video and didn't want to waste it waiting for it to load, if you read the article he says it did load and play the video, he just had to move on during the filming since he wanted to show other stuff on the video.
Edit: Here is the quote:
"I then visited Hulu.com. All of the content on Hulu.com worked as intended by the designers of the web site. I was able to navigate and play various videos with few problems. Video playback worked just as it does on a desktop web browser. I did the same with MTVMusic.com, which is a great place to watch music videos for free. All the video played just fine."
I frequent that site a fair ammount, and their review videos follow the same format, they don't like waiting for stuff to happen, and they try and keep them inside a time limit... we asked about it once, and they said they like to keep their videos to 7 minutes or less.
I also asked in the "discuss" tab about it, for further clarification. They respond pretty quickly, but might not until tomorrow since it is late in the day.

Right, which was my point. They're not going to be blocking mobile users by IP addresses, which is their only method of blocking aside from user agents (which are easily spoofed).

I can also watch Hulu videos on the Desire ROM, with Dolphin Browser HD (which uses the Flash 10 Lite from the ROM) and by setting my user agent to 'Desktop'. Apparently they haven't made all the proper modifications to block us entirely.

Working Hulu On FroYo

I glanced over the forums here and haven't found this trick listed.
If you want Hulu working on the FroYo:
Open Browser And Type "about:debug" (Without Quotes) In The URL Bar
Press The Menu Button
Settings > UAString > Desktop
Enjoy Hulu On Android!

only worked for a couple minutes for me too. But it worked.. a little choppy still. Hope to see flash video get optimized soon.
works great thanks ! i was just cussing the crap out of hulu for not working with flash on android. lol
Apparently it is not hardware optimized yet so that is the reason for the choppy video. But flash games and sites work great.
Thanks man, works for me too
Doesn't work anymore =(
They're catching on to us
edit: never mind, it still works. the browser reseted its' settings. I had to set it back to desktop again.
not working for me. the load up bar stop half way or 3/4 of the way and just gets stuck. any help? im running froyo on the ATT nexus one
This doesn't seem to be working any more. At least not for me. I'm on Froyo with Flash, and it gets to the point of the "Loading" spinner on a video for about 5-10 seconds, then displays "Unfortunately Hulu is not supported on your platform. We apologize for any inconvenience."
I double-checked the UAString setting, set it back to Android, then back to Desktop again.
Think we might have to use another method to spoof Hulu.
HULU stopped working for me as well. Looks like they filtered our device info again
meh never worked for me. Got as far as the pre-loading commercials a few times but then the usual "not supported" error. (but supported enough to show me the commercials? LOL)
You guys can thank Engadget lol
Initially Hulu was using the User Agent to detect a mobile browser.
I am guessing that they are now checking the Flash version and platform, using the System.capabilities.version method.
If that is the case, there will not be a workaround unless someone hacks the version info of Flash itself - possible I suppose, but not very likely.

I couldnt find where anyone mentioned this method of watching hulu...i have the phonemypc application so i can just use it to remotely go to my laptop or desktop and it doesnt have sound yet but the devs say it will soon but its otherwise easy to watch hulu.
Before froyo when id be interacting with my pc remotely if there was video it was like 1 frame per minute but now flash is utilized and it looks pretty damn good, and im guessing other remote desktop apps may have sound so thats at least a step in the right direction if you dont want to have to keep implementing "workarounds"... just FYI...

Unless you can add a JS script string to do it, it doesn't look like it without a hack of some sort.
Really don't what is the big deal with them blocking it. I mean I know that they don't have "mobile licensing" or whatever but it's not like there are millions of Nexus One owners out there...
I'm pretty sure they realized what we were doing and did the smart thing. All they have to do is check your flash version and if you're on a 10.1 then they can block it. Nothing you can do to change that, that I know of.
its all the news websites fault..sometimes they should just keep things on the down low
Man this is sad news
To be honest, I am shocked that hulu didn't have adobe flag the android flash player with a unique id to fully prevent users from sidestepping with something as simple as user agent modification.
compile flash with client=android101 and have hulu check against client strings. Done and done.

There gotta be a way around this. Any identifying string can be changed. Unless they are blocking by Sprint's mobile IP range. Did anyone get to work over wifi?

Spoof the Flash
You need to spoof the Flash player version.
Test it here http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html
The nexus one
Flash player version is "AND 10,1,61,68"
Operating system is "Linux 26.32.9-27220-"
Work laptop
Flash player version is "WIN 10,0,32,18"
Operating system is "Windows XP"
If you can figure out how to spoof these setting, more than likely you will not have any issues reaching Hulu.
I for one, do not know how to do it. But this is a good start

Hulu?!

Ok, I know that Hulu blocked mobile browsers from viewing its videos, but that 2.2 users can get around this with "about:debug" in their browser window. The command, however, doesn't seem to be working on my Evo.
I tried disabling Sense, which was easy, but no luck on getting around the Hulu block...
Anyone have any suggestions or tricks they've gotten to work?
I think your best bet is to wait for Froyo on this device.

I thought that the reason users on froyo could get it working was because froyo supports flash 10.1 or whatever, not because they changed the browser settings.
The Evo also supports Flash!
The issue is Hulu blocked all mobile devices from accessing their vids. The player will load, but it won't actually put the video up for watching...
Froyo users where (I've been told they can't now and a new work around is needed?) able to trick their browser into thinking they where on a desktop and then watch Hulu as per normal. The menu settings for this, however, is not on the Evo
just an idea i have noticed. hulu does NOT block mobile devices. i know they say they do and all but its weird. using my devices ip from sprint and all the device info i can stream hulu on my laptop threw my phone. sooo if they block mobile devices they would be blocking the browser config (i.e.-opera mini, android.)
now with all that said, another reason i dont believe it is because i did get hulu to stream way back when the eris 2.1 leak with flash came out. i watched family guy on my phone threw hulu. it was slow and horribly nasty looking and small. but it worked.
so theres some thoughts on hulu.
i hope you all can get this working..
it would be great!

They are just checking the string agent of your browser dude.
I think it has to be deeper than the string. From what I understand, when the Incredible came out, people were able to get Hulu to work with a little finesse and user-agent strings. However no amount of finagling has gotten Hulu to work on my EVO.
i tried it with my pro2 on skyfire browser. the hulu site stated that the browser was using a proxy server and assumed i may have been from outside the US trying to stream... i got reallllllll close though.. i saw the slide animations on the home page...
you'll need froyo, and the workaround flash in the nexus forums, as well as changing user agest to desktop using about:debug
it should work then. does on my nexus

search. there is a modified flash apk that will allow use of hulu. you still have to do the ua string change, but otherwise it works.
and keep it on the down low, just here at xda please. last time it flew out to engadget that there was a workaround, hulu shut it down.
On my Nexus One hulu loads, runs videos for about 15 minutes (ok video quality, poor sound quality(skipping)) and then stops. Navigating their flash based controls is very difficult. So you won't be missing much with EVO .

And what (if any) differences there are between this and the stock Samsung FroYo browser?
Also, I believe Hulu enforces viewing policy based on information it receives from Flash itself, not based on the browser user agent. Hence, different browsers/UAs shouldn't matter.
I can confirm that the "about:useragent" trick works on Cognition Beta 2.2 v9. Only problem is it doesn't persist if the browser is restarted. Still very useful though.

The reason some sites come up mobile is because they match on the word Android instead of mobile. Websites are to blame, not google in this case.

Create a book mark to about:config on your home screen. All you do is click the shortcut then hit the go button in the URL bar.
I tried with my Nexus S and browse to Facebook.com (full site).
It worked for a while, but then went back to Touch.Facebook.com.
Because of this, I am using Dolphin Mini which has option to browse as desktop browser. Problem solved.
