Hulu?! - EVO 4G General

Ok, I know that Hulu blocked mobile browsers from viewing its videos, but that 2.2 users can get around this with "about:debug" in their browser window. The command, however, doesn't seem to be working on my Evo.
I tried disabling Sense, which was easy, but no luck on getting around the Hulu block...
Anyone have any suggestions or tricks they've gotten to work?

I think your best bet is to wait for Froyo on this device.

My soul cried.
Yet my determination remains!

Tried to change the user agent in dolphin browser hd to desktop, but still wont work

I thought that the reason users on froyo could get it working was because froyo supports flash 10.1 or whatever, not because they changed the browser settings.

The Evo also supports Flash!
The issue is Hulu blocked all mobile devices from accessing their vids. The player will load, but it won't actually put the video up for watching...
Froyo users where (I've been told they can't now and a new work around is needed?) able to trick their browser into thinking they where on a desktop and then watch Hulu as per normal. The menu settings for this, however, is not on the Evo

just an idea i have noticed. hulu does NOT block mobile devices. i know they say they do and all but its weird. using my devices ip from sprint and all the device info i can stream hulu on my laptop threw my phone. sooo if they block mobile devices they would be blocking the browser config (i.e.-opera mini, android.)
now with all that said, another reason i dont believe it is because i did get hulu to stream way back when the eris 2.1 leak with flash came out. i watched family guy on my phone threw hulu. it was slow and horribly nasty looking and small. but it worked.
so theres some thoughts on hulu.

i hope you all can get this working..
it would be great!

They are just checking the string agent of your browser dude.

I think it has to be deeper than the string. From what I understand, when the Incredible came out, people were able to get Hulu to work with a little finesse and user-agent strings. However no amount of finagling has gotten Hulu to work on my EVO.

i tried it with my pro2 on skyfire browser. the hulu site stated that the browser was using a proxy server and assumed i may have been from outside the US trying to stream... i got reallllllll close though.. i saw the slide animations on the home page...

you'll need froyo, and the workaround flash in the nexus forums, as well as changing user agest to desktop using about:debug
it should work then. does on my nexus

search. there is a modified flash apk that will allow use of hulu. you still have to do the ua string change, but otherwise it works.
and keep it on the down low, just here at xda please. last time it flew out to engadget that there was a workaround, hulu shut it down.

On my Nexus One hulu loads, runs videos for about 15 minutes (ok video quality, poor sound quality(skipping)) and then stops. Navigating their flash based controls is very difficult. So you won't be missing much with EVO .

But hulu was a no show for Google I/O 2010, and this was found
TECH.ICRONTIC.COM----Hulu is another big name at the top of everyone’s list when Flash is mentioned, but they’ve decided to sit this one out. Hulu has blocked Android 2.2’s Flash player citing copyright concerns; their content providers don’t want to be seen on any device but the desktop.

PC WORLD.COM---Missing from all of this Flash action, of course, is Hulu. I was really disappointed when I tried-and ultimately failed-to watch an episode of "30 Rock" on the Nexus One. According to Adobe, Hulu does not own distribution rights for their content on mobile devices and therefore cannot stream video to smartphones. With no Hulu on the iPad and no Hulu on your Android phone, isn't time for Hulu to develop an app? Let's hope so.

UPDATE: The news seems to be true, as I am awaiting an email from HULU. Will post ASAP
Update: Hulu is refusing to comment, however you cannot play hulu on android flash. BUT there is a trick...See here
Apparently Hulu doesn't have the rights to broadcast their content to any non-desktop devices. That's something they'll have to sort out with the networks.
They also go on to say that this could very well be a temporary lock as Flash hasn't hit the mobile market in full yet. Once it's out on the handsets (~Jun 17th) that lock will probably be lifted. Also, I wouldn't worry so much. If you have a rooted phone, you can always use a proxy and change your UserAgent to something that is supported.
Change your user agent to desktop (through about:debug) and it loads fine.
The videos play badly though. Audio comes in clear, but the framerate is terrible, more like a slideshow.

This is of Froyo, but it's an early non accelerated Flashplayer 10.1
I've read hulu blocks all non-desktop users because they can't control who see's it. Technically I think it is only legal for U.S. residents to watch the shows on hulu and if it is a mobile phone they can't detect where they are.

Sorry to kill your post, but you never see a hulu video working. This actually supports that HULU is not letting us view vids
Hulu is likely finishing their pay subscription licensing issues before rolling out full video support to mobile devices.
I'd be surprised if they werent working on both at the same time. Hopefully we will see the mobile audience addressed when the "new" Hulu is released.

He only had XX amount of time for the video and didn't want to waste it waiting for it to load, if you read the article he says it did load and play the video, he just had to move on during the filming since he wanted to show other stuff on the video.
Edit: Here is the quote:
"I then visited Hulu.com. All of the content on Hulu.com worked as intended by the designers of the web site. I was able to navigate and play various videos with few problems. Video playback worked just as it does on a desktop web browser. I did the same with MTVMusic.com, which is a great place to watch music videos for free. All the video played just fine."
I frequent that site a fair ammount, and their review videos follow the same format, they don't like waiting for stuff to happen, and they try and keep them inside a time limit... we asked about it once, and they said they like to keep their videos to 7 minutes or less.
I also asked in the "discuss" tab about it, for further clarification. They respond pretty quickly, but might not until tomorrow since it is late in the day.

Right, which was my point. They're not going to be blocking mobile users by IP addresses, which is their only method of blocking aside from user agents (which are easily spoofed).
I can also watch Hulu videos on the Desire ROM, with Dolphin Browser HD (which uses the Flash 10 Lite from the ROM) and by setting my user agent to 'Desktop'. Apparently they haven't made all the proper modifications to block us entirely.

Obnoxious browser issue "Problem with file"

I'm having only one serious problem with my Vibrant, and while it's a little problem, it's frequent enough that it is driving me nuts, and also doesn't allow me to use (at least) one of the apps I use every day.
The issue is, when I go to some web sites, whether in the stock browser, or in another browser, like Skyfire, or whether it's in the browser within an app (for example NewsRob articles) I get a psuedo-crash where it opens the stock browser and says:
In a pop up box: "Problem with file The requested file was not found. webkit/"
In the browser window itself: The Web page at file://android asset/webkit/ could not be loaded as: The requested file was not found. webkit/
In the address bar: the same url as above.
If I hit back a couple times, it will take me back to whatever content I am looking at. But this is incredibly annoying when it's half the articles I'm trying to go through on NewsRob, or when I click certain links and it comes up and I have to hit back a few times before I can look at the page.
I have noticed the following:
- it seems to happen on pages that use Flash, it might be javascript as well, but I'm not sure. HOWEVER, disable plug-ins and javascript in the browser setting does not change the error from happening.
- thinking that it has to do with Flash, I looked into it more on the device. I noticed in Applications, it shows Flash listed, as well as Pineone Flash lite" so I don't understand what level of flash the phone has.
- I also noticed that (coming from a Nexus One and myTouch Slide) I don't see thumbnails for a lot of flash video content like on those devices. If I got to sites with Flash content that is not a video, it's just not there.
Anyway, if anyone knows how to fix this, I'd be much obliged.
I searched google and found almost NOTHING, which is shocking and makes me think perhaps a hard reset would fix it, but I'd really rather not have to re-set up my phone if it's not going to help.
The only thing I found online was that apparently some Droid X owners are having the same issue.
Anyway, any help would be great.
I have the same issue and just assume that samsung modified the browser so it broke whatever plugin its trying to access. The problem is any articles in newsrob that have an embedded video.

Captivate too
My Captivate has same issue. Thought I had broken the phone rooting, enabling sideloading,or hiding the bloatware.
My guess is it's probably related to flash lite 3 which is a plugin preinstalled on the vibrant. I'm going to assume that this problem will disappear once froyo rolls out.

I tried removing the flash files from /system/app and rebooting. It still happened. Disabling plugins in the browser doesn't help either. Irritating as hell, I sure hope CM6 or the official 2.2 release come out soon and fix this. And the GPS, compass, etc..
I had the same issue with Dolphin Browser HD, but I haven't had the issue yet with the stock Vibrant browser.
Does anybody have any insight on this? It's still plaguing my newsrob whenever there is an embedded video in the feed.
It's a problem with flash lite files. The vibrant has trouble with its implementation.
Not sent from my Vibrant using XDA App 'cause I returned it.
I hate to make froyo this holy messiah but will froyo fix that as well?
I'm actually hoping froyo literally cures cancer.
Btw, I'm on a Captivate, but this topic wasn't in that forum. I thought it would be relatively universal though.

Ok I tried Dolphin and flash works with it. Still not working in stock or opera

That doesn't make sense. Dolphin Mini/HD are not standalone browsers, they are UI and tweaks but use the stock webview browser (same as stock). So if it works in Dolphin, it should work in stock unless something is really screwed up.
Go into your Browser settings and make sure Plug Ins are set to On Demand or On.
In the stock browser, I'm able to load, say, Bejewled Blitz on Facebook. But when I went to hbo.com (I wanted to try HBOtoGo) it tells me that it's a flash site and I don't have flash installed.
I get the same message on HBO.com. Also, I am not able to watch videos on Hulu.com.
Try CNN. I think those sites block mobiles and tablets.

Flash doesn't work in third party browsers... It only works in the stock browser. Also, some sites like Hulu block mobile devices from accessing their content for what ever reason.. It has nothing to do with the actual device. Hulu is working on an App for Android that will be released in the next couple months. We will probably see a Netflixs app even sooner.

Grooveshark work around

Has anyone been able to find a way to use the Grooveshark desktop site without getting the "problem loading flash" error? I have read having flash 10.2 installed and using the Dolphin browser set to desktop user agent would work, but so far have had no luck on my Xoom or D1 without getting the error message. Also tried Skyfire and the stock browser with the about:debug trick, no dice. Anyone had any better luck, or other solutions that worked?
Have you tried TinyShark on the market?
Yeah that's what I have been using lately, but I would like to be able to load my playlists and everything from the grooveshark desktop site.

Oh ok, makes sense. I forgot i'm subscribed already.
Tinyshark lets you load your playlists too. The only benefit to the Grooveshark player is the offline cache ability. I tried it for a month and Tinyshark fit my needs just fine without paying $9 a month. When it was $3 a month it may have been worth it but triple the price and I'm out.
I think everyone that has replied has missed the point, I also am wondering if there has been a work around or if anyone is working on it, I think that with a tablet, we should be able to hit the real site and have flash work, why would we need to pay for an app or get an app that is made for small phones when we should be able to just go to the website.
I wish I was smarter with these dev things and I could work on it but I dont have the time to learn.
Hopefully someone that is reads this and wants the same thing, I love gooveshark but being that it is free from my desktop, I am not really wanting to pay for an app....
just my just my .02, thanks
Good luck man, I am hoping the update to the flash player will maybe work, but aside that I have had no luck in getting the desktop site to work on the Xoom and just started using the TinyShark app in the market. Not nearly as nice, but I will take what I can get until someone figures this out.
Flash also reports the client platform/OS, independent of the browser user agent, when connecting to a streaming server. I don't use Grooveshark, so I don't know if this is the reason you get the error, but it's a strong possibility.
Some people have had success with opening a file in Flash (first honeycomb release) in a hex editor and replacing the string "AND" (Android) with "WIN" (Windows). There were also some high jinks to get the change to persist, but a modified APK was made available that seemed to work for some users to access Hulu. I haven't followed it lately, but you could probably find more info searching for "flash for hulu".
EDIT: Here's the link: [MOD] Flash 10.2 Working HULU Updated: 4/29/11
Best case scenario is that someone has put out a modded APK for the current Flash release that also works with Grooveshark. If not, there might be another, less elegant solution.
I'm still debating on which tablet to buy xoom, asus or wait for newer models.
Does the GS app work on the honeycomb? Atrix users was complaining on their forums so that's why I'm asking

any solution to enable Hulu on the Iconia Tab A500?

Hi;
wondering if anyone was able to have Hulu work on A500?
I tried the post in XZoom section and it didnt work... although my A500 is rooted.
here is the OP for Xzoom (also it has many issues even on the Xzoom):

Then I installed the original flash and pushed the modified .so file into data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib and it didn't work... the browsers do not even detect the flash player at all.
any help will be highly appreciated.
thanks

You can also buy a lifetime subscription. It's now $79.99, but as an early supporter, I got it for $39.99 ! I use it to stream to my PS3 as well, so it's been worth it.
I have had no luck with the Xoom fix. It looks like they are needing to load a custom kernal to get their Hulu fix to work and I 'm not sure I want to try loading that on the A500. If the Xoom guys can figure out why they need that custom kernal then perhaps we'll get a better fix for Hulu.
I also have a g tablet and tried the Hulu fixed flash I use successfully on that tab on the A500 but not luck.

i will look at the above posts and compare it to what was similarly done on the evo and see what I can come up with. O, the evo it only appeared to work on 10.1
If I get a day off this week I will see what I can do
honestly it's really easy. I don't know why people seem to go through all the trouble of custom kernels and such. Is it a secret? are we trying to hide that we can access hulu so that they won't wise up? It's literally as easy as replacing one file using root explorer and changing the permissions to rxwr--xr--xr. I've used it on my captivate with froyo, then the captivate with gingerbread and now the acer iconia with honeycomb. If you search the forums you should find the file.
i am not sure why a custom kernal would be required other than hardware exceleration which the a500 would not need. It should just take the so file that has been modified to fool hulu into thinking you are on a windows desktop and all should work fine
I also have a modified hulu apk I use. If I have time tomorrow I will check it out
just replace libflashplayer.so!!
I replaced the libflashplayer.so with the one modified for hulu on the Thunderbird and it works just fine. Just do a search in the Forum you'll find it with instructions.
also aside from playon, splashtop is a cheap way to remote into a computer and be able to watch hulu, either way you will have to leave a computer on at home. But splashtop is one time charge of five dollars.
I love it will my htpc and be able to remote and update libraries or predownload a movie

I am a noob, who was frustrated to learn that Google is blacklisting users who have rooted devices, and I just wanted to have Hulu on my tablet, like I have on my phone. I have found that Splashtop remote from the market will successfully stream Hulu and Netflix for those who are interested.
It is a paid app, but for someone not wanting to root right now, it seems like a good option- so I thought I would put this out there in case anyone else is frustrated with their choices.
Again, No disrespect intended, I just wanted to offer this since the other option I read about on here “PlayOn” does not seem to work, and it is $79.99 verses $9.99.
I made the leap to try Splashtop. I dont mind rooting my machine but it a pain over time and generally just irritation follows. My purpose in thus post is to point out that unless I ended up with. a slow or broken machinr splashtop is far from an exceptable answer. Its slow and super choppy when streaming video, correct me if im wrong and youve seen acceptable connections but id like to save you the $10, the app is cool but not a good solution for this discussion. Additionally to note is its a comole take over of the remote machine, you can't use your tablet while someone else uses teh computer you are remoting to

On XDA search and download this file:
Fixed Flash 10.2 for Hulu
Then open your stock browser and do the following:
Type: about:debug and press enter. Head into Settings>Debug>UAString>Desktop.
After this Hulu will work, I have tested it and I now have it on my A500
Click to collapse
This dont work for me,hulu keeps saying,"this video is not available for your platform",then force closes, any suggestions?
