Touch-screen alignment problem
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Has anyone else experienced the following problem:
After using the k-Jam for a while (often after a lot of opening/closing the keyboard), my screen alignment gets out of whack. Basically the touch-screen alignment moves by about an icon's (e.g. the close application icon) width to the right.
If I do a soft reset, most of the time this fixes the alignment (though sometimes I need to run through a screen alignment Wizard again to correct it).
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what might be happening?
Thanks!

Happens to me but I don't do a soft reset. I have seen this many times before in the past with other devices from different companies. What is happening is that the flexi-lead from the display to the keyboard is moving as they normally add lubicant to the flexi-cable port. What I have found that works and is quicker than a soft rest or align the screen is to simply open and close the keyboard fully.
this seems to be happening to me now. I have the WIZA200. it's weird and to me it only affects the right part of the screen (like 25%).
i have the same problem on my cingular 8125. the open/close keyboard trick works, but is kinda annoying to have to do all the time.
seems like i only started to have this problem after i flashed my 8125 with the qtek (stock) 2.17 rom.
i have been looking for the dopod 2.2x wwe rom to re-flash (to see if it fixes the problem), but it is no longer on the ftp
if anyone that has the dopod rom could upload it to the ftp, i would appreciate it 8)
Same problem...
note i reflashed with the new aku2.2 cingular rom and the alignment problem is still there...
Hi guys!
I have the same problem with HTC Wizard Cingular 8125 (putting in all names in case someone else searches for this thread!)
It's a total pain in the butt. I created a shortcut to the screen alignment setting on my today page. Sometimes i have to fix it once a day, sometimes every ten minutes.
I plan to reflash the ROM to the new 2.25 (or whatever is next from Summiter).
I have a feeling it won't fix it.
I will send this back to Cingular.
I'll keep you posted. Share your stories!
Thanx!
M
I do have the same annoying problem. for now is the second 9100 I have. tomorrow I will speak with some expert in technical stuff to know why is happening. so i'll post something about it. i'm using the rom from cingular posted by summiter (i guess this is the one i'm using...). the problem persists so... will post more. this is funny because I just had this problem again when I changed my rom from o2 to cingular.
this was happening to me awhile back with my tmo mda. its not the rom that's causing it. I finally got a replacment and hbavent had a problem since
Guys, i think the source of the problems is the case that comes with the device.
Do you all use it?
The magnets that has make the screen behave that way.
Post your feedback!
Hi there,
I just wanted to let you know that his has happened across 2.17 and 2.3 ROMS, and I don't use the case.
I am 99.9% sure that indeed it is hardware related, but not the case.
I am still waiting for my seller to help me exchange the unit....
It would be great if there is a fix!

Possible explanation / solution
Hi folks, My wizard started doing this last night and i found the only way to actually use the "X" close icon was to gently squeeze my wizard from the sides.
Anyway, as I was trying to video a lightning storm, and it was 4am, I decided I would leave it for today.
I came to the conclusion that by squeezing the sides of the phone, I was gently, and ever so slightly raising the edges of the frame upward.
By doing this, any trapped dirt / grit, would not be pressing on the screen.
I have just tried this:
Take a small piece of paper, fold it tightly once and run the corner gently around the edge of the screen and under the frame.
Worked for me and could just be a simple if only temporary solution.
Try it,its free.
PS: Think about using the phone against a sweaty ear and all the crap that builds up.
I have this problem on my Prophet based Jamin - same generation, but no keyboard as you guys.
Here's a thought - if this is realted to the screen squeeze mentioned above, do you all keep yours in your front pockets or in a case or what? I wonder if the unit is getting squeezed?
I keep mine in my front pants pocket all day. Not only is it warm all day but getting squeezed when I'm sitting.
Gonna try keeping it in a case for a week to see what happens. Please chime in - this is making me HATE this f'in thing.
Me too
I have this problem, US T-Mobile MDA, no case, but I do use a protector. My theory is soft resets cause it. At least, when I have several, it seems more likely; I have to align the screen about every third day.
For me, everything is shoved over to the right relative to where it appears.
I put a link to "align screen" on the start menu; create a file (e.g. by copying an existing link with ActiveSync explorer to your pc desktop, renaming it and editing it, then dropping it back with the new name) named something like Screen.lnk in Windows/Start Menu/Programs with this content:
22#ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,7?\Windows\deviceinfo.exe,-103
and then select it for the Start menu (Settings/Menus).
Thanks preston - I like your ingenuity although it probably doesn't need to be said... this shouldn't be happening.
The rat bastages at HTC told me it's because I didn't install my extended ROM files. Could someone PLEASE explain how skipping Backgammon, Antivirus and PDF reader will fix this? (rhetorical).
later.
Which Extended Rom File
I only installed a small portion of my extended rom files, but it started when I had the full contingent from the original. But if there is a program that is supposed to be helpful, it would be nice to know it. Perhaps hidden in bubble breaker is the cure!

Happens to me, and I've never used the case it came with.
This happens to me also, but i have to say that i thought that it was the magnet in the case it came with that is causing the problem, it's been 6 weeks i stoped using the case and now i barely have this problem, i used to have it 2 or 3 times a day.
Hope someone will have a solution for this, if not can we get another phone instead?
An idea, but would need help
I spent some time reading about this. (Is there some way to search for phrases? What makes search painful is "search for all words" turns up too many unrelated items.) First thing, every HTC device seems to have this problem. Most threads believe it is a hardware problem created by either sliding the keyboard out or inserting the stylus.
One thread noted that
HKLM/HARDWARE/DEVICEMAP/TOUCH/
contains data on screen alignment. So I aligned my screen five times and observed the data:
2078,1898 3212,650 3195,3216 839,3234 805,640
1989,1944 3255,666 3233,3235 792,3228 793,621
1987,1944 3218,663 3233,3247 783,3241 777,635
2000,1940 3238,671 3209,3249 797,3237 790,661
1965,1932 3215,640 3198,3248 754,3228 759,637
I tried changing the values to the average of the middle three values (remove the outliers component by component then average) and it worked fine, in the sense that the screen aligned. These values are
1992,1939 3224,660 3213,3243 791,3233 787,637
I of course have not been able to get the screen misalignment to appear, so I don't know for sure that this key is changed when the screen is misaligned; I will of course check if it happens to me.
If so, my idea is to create a program that edits this registry key and inserts the desired values. This program would run automatically with a soft reset, and be available on the start menu as well. That way, we could simulate an alignment without actually going through the process.
I know some people know how to create a program that edits a registry key, but I don't personally know how to do this. What is the easiest way to edit one specific key?
add me to the list, my wizard is doing the same thing now.
just as someone else mentioned, it happens on the right side of the screen for me as well.
not sure why this is happening but I believe it has started ever since I've upgraded from 2.24 rom to 2.26 rom. either its the roms fault or maybe my wizard has wore down and its happening coincidently at the same time.
All ROMs
I've had it with all the ROMs, whatever the first (1.08?) that it came with, although not right away, but with 2.24 and 2.26. It is either less with 2.26 or the same.
Hi,
I have XV6700 phone and been using "cooked" ROMs for some time. Everything is working just fine, however just recently I noticed strange problem with my LCD.
It seems that the very bottom line of the picture is displayed all the way on top. It's like whole picture is rolled down by a pixel.
I was trying to find some solution on the internet, however I found nothing. I've just replaced the LCD screen (I broke previous one), however I had the same problem with my previous screen. I don't remember if I had this problem with original Apache ROM.
My current ROM is CE OS 5.2.20924 (Build 20924.1.5.0).
Does anybody notice similar problem and know how to adjust position on that LCD?
Thanks in advance,
Jacek
Hi All,
First, let me introduce myself. I'm a software developer (C#/ASP.NET primarily) from Melbourne, Australia. I've had my HP rw6828 for a few years now and have found xda-dev to be a fantastic wealth of information. I've flashed this phone countless times with many different ROMs, and poked around 'under the hood' with the registry etc and played around with getting TouchFLO working, etc.
Anyway, just bought a (barely) used (still had original screen protector etc on) G1 from eBay (from the US). Got it yesterday and while it's a great phone I'm not sure if the issue I'm having is hardware or software related.
Basically, sometimes (I can't yet determine whether it's just random or if something causes it... I'm still experimenting) when I push certain keys, it's like two keys are being pushed at the same time. For example, I push the [W] key and it types "6w". Makes typing "www." for web-browsing a royal PITA! The reverse also appears to be true, i.e. i push [6] and it also types "6w".
Several keys are messsed up like this, for example [1] or [y] results in "y1", [2] or [5] results in "52", or [n] results in "ns", etc.
I'm totally new to Android and the G1, and this is how I bought it, but Settings > About Phone shows the following:
Model Number: HTC_Dream
Firmware version: 1.1
Baseband version: 62.33.20.08H_1.22.14.11
Kernel version: 2.6.25-01845-g85d4f0d [email protected]#27
Build number: 1.51.0.1 PLAT-1.0 126986 test-keys
Can anyone shed some light on the topic?
Cheers,
Sam.
I would think it would be a software related issue. If you are familiar with rooting, flashing, etc, try flashing to RC29 then installing a JF modded firmware or a Haykuro build firmware.
It looks like hardware
Unfortunately it appears to be a hardware fault actually. I noticed that it was working correctly, then i opened and closed the screen and it was broken again. I then gave it a gentle twist, i.e. the whole housing, and it was okay. I'd say there's a bad connection inside. I was really hoping for a software bug so that i could easily fix it, but at least I now know the cause I might open it up and take a look.
Thanks for your suggestion anyway.
If its a bad connection (as you believe), then that is the easiest thing to fix. Just open it up and reconnect the various connections.
However, I wouldn't conclude that it is hardware just by what you've experienced. Opening, closing, or twisting shouldn't have any effect on the keyboard since it is just the DISPLAY that moves.
Where did you get your phone? I would think it is a hardware issue and would require either servicing or a replacement.

eBay, used. Since I gave it a bit of mechanical adjustment, it's been fine.
Out of interest though, can anyone tell me (from what I posted in the first post) what exactly I'm running on this phone? I.e. is it a form of the original OS, or is it a cooked version?
Cheers,
Sam.
Try googling the kernel version #. Bunch of hits on that. I only looked for a minute or two, but looks like it could be a german RC-9?
did it hold up
I noticed that this post was from awhile ago, and I was wondering if adjusting the inners fixed it and for how long. I just recently bought one on ebay and it too is having the same problem. Also how hard was it to get to the connector that needs to be adjusted?
I have this problem some time ago (2-3 weeks ago) when my phone come back from service. You can try to repair it by strongly shaking (but be careful to don't throw it on f.e. wall ). Several times this repairs phone for hour or two, but after two days the problem has gone permanently and my phone still works perfectly.
This problem is related to one of connectors in phone. I tried to root, flash another ROM but only strong shaking something helped.
Folks ~ On Aug 10, 2010 I purchased an unlocked HTC Legend (A6365 – HSPA 850/1900/2100 Mhz). The phone operated wonderfully until Sep 8, 2010. At that time, the Notification bar couldn’t be “pulled-down” anymore. Additionally, without rhyme or reason, when I touch the screen, the notification panel will open randomly. This renders the phone useless since every time I touch the screen, the notification panels opens. I tried a softboot and a factory reset. Neither action resolved the issue.
I contacted HTC USA support and they suggested clearing the calendar data and vigorously rubbing my hands together and then touch the screen whenever the issue occurred. No success. This issue occurs whether the SIM card is installed or not. I can safely say that no new applications were installed within 48 hours of the issue starting.
I search the available forums and found at least three other instances of this same issue. Regrettably, none of these threads have any answers to the issue.
HTC support then recommended for me to contact HTC Return Merchandise Authorization & Repair Center. This group (in the USA) cannot accept the phone for troubleshooting because this phone is not available in the USA.
Based on the behavior thus far, I suspect this is an issue with the firmware becoming unstable. The phone hasn’t been exposed to any drastic environmental changes (heat, cold, excessive dust, etc). Software info follows:
Firmware version: 2.1-update 1
Baseband version: 47.37.35.09U_7.09.35.05
Kernel version: 2.6.29-9e497c43
Build number: 2.02.666.3 CL1777708 release-keys
Software number: 2.02.666.3
Browser version: WebKit 3.1
By know, HTC should have received multiple complains of this issue and I hope they have a solution for it. The options of the phone are great, reception is wonderful and performance is superb (except for this issue).
Your assistance is greatly appreciated!
i had a similar behavior for just a wile and it was related to a screen protector i had on my legend.
after removing this and cleaning the screen very well it was gone
i suspect there was a conductible particle between the casing and the screen that mixed up the induction system of the touch screen.
sins then i have a little prog on my legend that shows the touch points he recognized : http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.batterypoweredgames.mtvistest
maby this is not related to your problem but you never know
Good luck
I have the exact same problem that occured after mounting screen protection.
I got the suggestion from support to do a factory reset.
I'll try that tonight.
I also saw this tip:
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4894244&postcount=36
(I got this message when trying to post the link: "To prevent spam to the forums, new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed."
I look like an internal link to me)
Sounds possible since you have to puch the air out when mounting screen protection.
So perhaps to much pressure to the screen causes this problem.
Nope that didn't work...none of the proposals.
Next step, send it in for service.
I had this exact same problem! It also started happening after I applied a Zagg screen protector. I thought maybe it was because water got inside the phone.
I removed the protector since there was a hair underneath it but the problem persisted. I was having the exact same symptoms as you (notification area acting wonky).
I got the phone from future shop and they have a return policy... for $10 a month you can return the device at any time during your contract and get a brand new one no questions asked. This is what I did and my new one works perfectly.
As a side note..I originally had a palm pre which started acting strange so I brought it back for replacement and since future shop no longer supports the pre I was given a choice of a different phone. I chose the legend and absolutely love it. I loved the pre but the legend is a much better phone.
sorry for bringing an old thread up... but i have the same problem...
is there a solution to this? ... except RMA, because the warranty has just ended...
the notification wont swipe down and opens randomly... the screen has been tested and is workin ok...
thx...
Have you tried wiping your screen? I get this occasionally. But just wipe helps remote dirt that messes up the heat sensors away.

You can try pressing harder digitizer just abowe home and menu button but that may work just temporarely. Replacing digitizer you will fix this problem once and for all... Sorry
Hi all,
Since we did it before for the Hermes and the Raphael it might be an idea to make a list of issues with HW/SW people have noticed vs the serial numbers of thier devices:
The serial Number can be found under the battery, generally the first 6 digits will do.
The serial # will be something like HT0AFRTxxxxx (mine....xxxxx being the bit I keep private).
Something like these wiki pages is what I was thinking:
Raphael - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Raphael_Problems
Hermes - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Hermes/Problems
Think this might be useful?
Would be useful to track if there are hardware revisions. On the G2 forums, they've reported what seems to be a slightly different model number on later phones.
Also, would be useful to know if there's anything about the model number which helps identify Euro/Asia vs NAM phones, etc, etc.
I have the NAM version.
Problems:
- loose hinge
- wifi signal lost when using qwerty
Serial #: HT0AMRVXXXXX
loose hinges on mine
NAM Version
S/N: HT0ALRVxxxxx
P/N: 99HLW020-00 XD
NAM Version, bought on Day 1 of the release at 0900.

Hinge is OK, but often several attempts to dial a number are needed to get through. Wife with same phone has same problem. Happens on 3 different SIMs in 3 different countries. Both our profiles have been reset but problems continue...
this important, i see a lot of video about hinge problem in htc desire z...
No issues so far NAM Bell version
slightly loose hinges
Serial #: HT0ARRVXXXXX

VF Branded - currently unrootable
No real hardware issues

This device is now rootable, no hardware issues
Hi,
French AZERTY ,unlocked, stock ROM not hinge worry so long(well fit)
HT0>BGRTxxxxx
edit: defective unit, exchanged with brand new one same serial HT0BGRTxxxxx
at the begining with a hinge more loose
PS: I Read too quickly and it's a B not an eight in the serial
Hi here,
HT0BGRT.....
Stock ROM, not branded, bought December 15th.
I don't really know how to judge wether hinges are loose or not, anyone with a video link or some tip? The keyboard part is not very firmly sticed to the screen part, it moves a little, but nothing annoying.
New problem here: after 2 weeks of use, my screen have a laggy behaviour. Appeared yesterday. It's best seen when playing Angry Birds for instance: you pull a bird and it often starts while the finger is still on the screen. Often also the touch lost if immediately followed by a tap (as an example, yellow birds start and get boost exactly in the same time, from the beginning). I can also note this behaviour in sliding anything, sometimes the slide stops and further finger move won't do anything until i remove my finger and put it again. Really looks like a hardware problem, but not sure.
hi,
i have a desire Z, S/N starts with HT0BGRT . French with azerty keyboard, was supposed to be blocked to virgin mobile/orange.
No problem as of now, had it for a week, rooted/s-off / un simlocked last saturday (rage method). Rom version 1.34.
I have heard about loose hinges but not felt it.
@Ninj I would recommend you clear caches... search market place.
