Folks ~ On Aug 10, 2010 I purchased an unlocked HTC Legend (A6365 – HSPA 850/1900/2100 Mhz). The phone operated wonderfully until Sep 8, 2010. At that time, the Notification bar couldn’t be “pulled-down” anymore. Additionally, without rhyme or reason, when I touch the screen, the notification panel will open randomly. This renders the phone useless since every time I touch the screen, the notification panels opens. I tried a softboot and a factory reset. Neither action resolved the issue.
I contacted HTC USA support and they suggested clearing the calendar data and vigorously rubbing my hands together and then touch the screen whenever the issue occurred. No success. This issue occurs whether the SIM card is installed or not. I can safely say that no new applications were installed within 48 hours of the issue starting.
I search the available forums and found at least three other instances of this same issue. Regrettably, none of these threads have any answers to the issue.
HTC support then recommended for me to contact HTC Return Merchandise Authorization & Repair Center. This group (in the USA) cannot accept the phone for troubleshooting because this phone is not available in the USA.
Based on the behavior thus far, I suspect this is an issue with the firmware becoming unstable. The phone hasn’t been exposed to any drastic environmental changes (heat, cold, excessive dust, etc). Software info follows:
Firmware version: 2.1-update 1
Baseband version: 47.37.35.09U_7.09.35.05
Kernel version: 2.6.29-9e497c43
Build number: 2.02.666.3 CL1777708 release-keys
Software number: 2.02.666.3
Browser version: WebKit 3.1
By know, HTC should have received multiple complains of this issue and I hope they have a solution for it. The options of the phone are great, reception is wonderful and performance is superb (except for this issue).
Your assistance is greatly appreciated!
i had a similar behavior for just a wile and it was related to a screen protector i had on my legend.
after removing this and cleaning the screen very well it was gone
i suspect there was a conductible particle between the casing and the screen that mixed up the induction system of the touch screen.
sins then i have a little prog on my legend that shows the touch points he recognized : http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.batterypoweredgames.mtvistest
maby this is not related to your problem but you never know
Good luck
I have the exact same problem that occured after mounting screen protection.
I got the suggestion from support to do a factory reset.
I'll try that tonight.
I also saw this tip:
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4894244&postcount=36
(I got this message when trying to post the link: "To prevent spam to the forums, new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed."
I look like an internal link to me)
Sounds possible since you have to puch the air out when mounting screen protection.
So perhaps to much pressure to the screen causes this problem.
Nope that didn't work...none of the proposals.
Next step, send it in for service.
I had this exact same problem! It also started happening after I applied a Zagg screen protector. I thought maybe it was because water got inside the phone.
I removed the protector since there was a hair underneath it but the problem persisted. I was having the exact same symptoms as you (notification area acting wonky).
I got the phone from future shop and they have a return policy... for $10 a month you can return the device at any time during your contract and get a brand new one no questions asked. This is what I did and my new one works perfectly.
As a side note..I originally had a palm pre which started acting strange so I brought it back for replacement and since future shop no longer supports the pre I was given a choice of a different phone. I chose the legend and absolutely love it. I loved the pre but the legend is a much better phone.
sorry for bringing an old thread up... but i have the same problem...
is there a solution to this? ... except RMA, because the warranty has just ended...
the notification wont swipe down and opens randomly... the screen has been tested and is workin ok...
thx...
Have you tried wiping your screen? I get this occasionally. But just wipe helps remote dirt that messes up the heat sensors away.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
You can try pressing harder digitizer just abowe home and menu button but that may work just temporarely. Replacing digitizer you will fix this problem once and for all... Sorry

Ok so my Cingular 8525 is basically unusable due to the touchscreen thinking it's getting taps in the upper right corner (upper left in landscape mode). This has the nice effect of closing programs down to the today screen in portrait mode or constantly popping up the start menu in landscape mode (about three times a second). Any ideas?
I tried soft resetting and also removing the battery for several minutes. Haven't tried a hard reset as I don't want to go through that except for a last resort. Tried wiping the screen with a soft cloth. There are no weird programs on the device except what everyone here uses.
I still have 5 days before the end of my 30 days return period with Cingular. If I bring it back will they just give me another one?

on your touchscreen problem.. i have seen this occur by someone improperly putting on a screen protector or maybe there is some dirt up there.. and if you take it back to the store they may give you a new one or make you call the warranty by mail line and get a replacement that way
..... or your OK button could be stuck down
I took a bottle of lens cleaner from my camera bag and thoroughly cleaned the screen. I ran my fingernails under the edge of the screen and really made sure no dirt was under there. Lo and behold, it seems to be working fine now. I browsed some RSS headlines for about 10 minutes with no problems.
Weird though, I have used an Ipaq 4705 WM5 pocket pc for two years now and really ran it through the ringer. It looks like it's been to war and back (which it has in a since) and never experienced errant screen taps. Oh well, still enjoying the 8525 (last phone was 2125).
Thanks so much!

Just a note of caution!!! This is related to the screen alignment issue i.e. the touch sensitive area of the screen continuing beneath the bezel and causing unwanted touches whether through dust or the sticky gasket in there.
May not return, or will be cured again by the "business card" fix / or as you did a firm clean to release the screen from touching the bezel.
But, it's a question for you, if you only have 5 days left under warranty. Most people with the SA problem find the first signs appear in the first couple of weeks. I would certainly put it through it's paces, open up a few applications leave wifi on so it heats up, surf web over wifi etc etc as the added bit of heat generated internally was a known factor in exacerbating the problem. If all stays well over next couple of days maybe it'll be OK.
Would be good to get urgent feedback from anyone with a newer Hermes who's had this issue and what happened.
Mike
Argh, it's back. OK, I'm certain it's a touchscreen problem and not a button sticking as holding down OK will not cause the start menu to pop up while an application is up and holding the windows key will not close an app. Also the problem is delayed if I hold the stylus down on the screen. It's just the upper right (portrait mode) of the screen that is getting the errant screen tap (about three or four times a second).
I've ran a business card through the edges and it doesn't help. I'm not going to take this thing apart. I did that several times with the 2125 to fix unresponsive keys and joystick but the problems always reappear. My one year old 2125 is barely functional now. My g/f would rather keep her crap LG flip phone then inhieret the 2125 after watching me battle it. That's pretty sad.
I'm going to try a hard reset (second one in three weeks) and if that doesn't help I'm returning it to Cingular and getting my money back. Then I'll either buy another one or a blackjack. I like the 3g and love this device. It's my third Windows Mobile 5.0 product. I don't like the sub-par build quality on my second HTC product now. I paid $599 plus tax for this phone at a local Cingular store (despite the web store saying $550).
My advice for what it's worth is take it back. This screen business has a habit of coming and going and it's entirely possible you hard reset and everything is fine and two weeks later it's back. Also would be better to return with the issue present (not that they wouldn't believe you -would they?)
On the whole though this problem is much more rare than it was, so if you do get the same device again hopefully you will be luckier. If you get directly from shop though check the firmness of the key board clicking into place that seems to still be fairly common problem.
Not the best start to the new year!!
Mike
Well I got desperate and hard reset... I could barely get past the screen alignment startup so needless to say that didn't fix things. Having gone this far and thoroughly pissed at having to reinstall everything I decided to loosen those screws on the back and run a card around the edges.
So far, it's working! I'm not content settling on this hack though so I'm bringing it back Tuesday and will update on my experience at the retail store (not looking forward to that).
Happy new year and thanks for all the super fast responses guys!
Alignment
I was browsing the www the other day and saw a korean/ japanese site showing the inside of these precious devices, and (as pointed out above) how the seal/ gasket underneath the bezel is the root cause of our anguish.
There were some detailed pics of how you can DIY, and remove the gasket, but it's no where near me basic level of competency.
Why would they design a touch-screen to big for the device I wonder???
there is also the business card trick about sliding it underneath the edges to loosen the gasket... there is a whole thread on this screen alignment issue
what site shows how to fix the gasket?
There is a post about someone seeing a site showing how to fix the gasket proplem on the touch screen. Could I please get the URL??

Just got back in from my local Cingular store and actually had a pleasant, hassle-free experience exchanging my 8525 for a brand new one. I explained to the CSR the issue and she immediately understood the problem (must not be the first guy walking in there about this).
Unfortunately, she didn't have any in stock but merrily called around and found six others in stock at nearby stores. So off I went to the next store and had the old 8525 exchanged for a new one in less then ten minutes. The CSR didn't even bother to look at the old phone or check the accessories I returned with it.
The new 8525 is syncing up as I write this and immediately I notice some things are different. First of all, written on the side of the box is 12/26. So we know this phone is probably brand new. The keyboard does indeed click in and out more firmly then my old one. The USB cable plugs in tighter (a good thing, I was always getting USB connection problems), and lo and behold Windows Vista installed HTC sync drivers then Media Player automatically recognized the device (never did any of that on the old one).
I'm using the Windows Mobile Device Center Beta on Vista RTM and it just finished syncing without any problems. Moral of this story is if your 8525 is experiencing any problems at all and you are within 30 days, return it for a hassle free refund.
Good news and you're absolutely right about getting it back within warranty if there's a fault.
Great stuff!

Cingular 8525 touch screen no working
I am having a problem with the touch screen on my 8525. My phone was working fine then the then the screen stopped responding. I was able to navigate via keyboard but that was it. I did a soft reset and it did not help. I then did a hard reset and the screen went to the setup and wants to align the screen which obviously I cannot do.
The changes I have made the same day prior to it not working are as follows:
-Unlocked with Hermes SIM Unlock
-Installed latest Cingular ROM
-Installed fit4cat Hermes Tweaker v1.1a
The phone worked fine for about 12 hrs before the touch screen stopped working.
Any suggestions?
Hey there, I have had the problem before (about 3.5 weeks ago). I had to send it in for service (since I am not a Cingular customer anymore but use the 8525 with T-mobile).Good luck.

Hi, going through the emails on this list was indeed very useful. I bought an iMate JASJAM in January 2007 and it started giving me a weird problem with the screen.
The phone was working perfectly OK till Mid Feb when I started noticing that any application I opened (including phone or contacts) got closed automatically within a second. I observed carefully and saw that the 'X' on the top left corner of the screen was probably getting clicked on its own. I suspected it is most probably a screen problem and took it to the iMate service center. They promptly replaced the screen in 2 days.
It worked fine for 15 days before I am seeing the problem again. Could someone help me please. I am seriously dependent on email through my phone for my work. Would appreciate any sort of guidance, even if it seems obvious.
My JASJAM is 647XX s/n based
Thanks a ton,
Aditya Deshoande
If indeed the X is getting phantom taps, this is not a screen problem as such. In other words, you could replace the screen time and again and it would recur. The issue is that the screen gets pressre/pressed by the bezel around the screen. The screen is rather stupidly sensitive to touches even below the bezel. Pressure can arise from a slight twist in bezel, from heat expansion and from dust trapped between bezel and screen. You might try the "business card solution" - though it is not guaranteed.
I would also take a backup and do a hard reset. Try the problem apps without restoring the backup. This will identify whether it's software or the SA related problem.
f the problem is still there, I would demand a replacement not a fix, because if something is out of line it's not going to be fixed by swapping screens.
Mike
Thank you
Mike,
Thank you for posting a reply so quickly. I suspected it is not just a screen alignment issue the moment it appeared again. None of the fixes mentioned for the SA issue work. I just wanted to check if anyone has any suggestions to try something. There are no applications installed by me and I have tried hard reset. In fact the crosshair in the align screen application keeps moving without me touching the screen.
The problem is that this problem makes the phone useless because I cannot open the dialer. We need to be extremely careful of what iMate and HTC seem to be shipping out. This is a damn expensive phone to have such problems.
I will request for a replacement but would not be surprised if I am refused and told that it will be repaired since it is warranty.
Let us see if I need to drag them to consumer forum. I will, if the need arises.
Regards
Adi
Good luck Adi - I hope it works out. Yes that jumping around of the cross hairs does prove there is pressure being put on somewhere. Indeed HTC did appear to have largely resolved the SA and SA related problems - but I'm still seeing quite a few.
Cheers
Mike
Heats up during charging
Hi Mike,
Perhaps the problem is compounded by the fact that it really heats up if you charge the phone while it is still in the cover. The one with a belt clip that comes in the box
My screen does not respond to any taps anymore. Which in a way is good because I am at least able to call as well as send/receive emails.
Regards
Adi
Same problem here!
So my Hermes, which just got replaced by Cingular after the "red light..not charging problem" (Thanks for the pointers on that Mike!). But my new unit is also having phantom clicks on the x or in landscape the Start menu kept getting clicks. And I too got the moving crosshairs during screen alignment setup. Now the whole screen is whacked, not repsonding to any clicks.
Cingular are sending out another unit. I love my hermes, but seriously getting worried about the reliability of these units. I really can;t be without my unti working for too long, I'm stcuk having to go back to my SE P900 (with a flaky battery) or my SE S700 which sux.
It is a worry and very frustrating. However, when you get a good one it is well worth it. A hassle I know, but some folks here say they've been through 3/4 before being happy. This is the secret I think, put up with no physical defect and get an immediate replacement. Use a cheap mobile while you wait for the replacement. Most of the 'pain' comes from trying this and that and the other to get the device working and perhaps 6 out of ten times you fail. Use the warranty without hesitation. There ARE good ones out there!
My thought for today!!
Mike
Hi all,
I need help, suggestions, anything with an issue I've had for a while. Since the time I started loading WM6 the screen has been randomly fading to white. I have LSVW latest rom 22/4 SE and 1.40.10 radio and 1.40oli although it doesn't matter what rom you load. I tried going back to WM5 and its better but now still fades to white as well.
on advise from oli and legolas I purchased a new battery but still have the same issue.
I have dropped my phone once which resulted in a crack to the right of the DEL/CR keys so could it be a HW issue and if you think so is it one I could open up the phone and fix?
Any and all help appreciated
IN FACT IF SOMEONE CAN RESOLVE THE ISSUE I WILL DONATE SOME CASH TO THEM!
test
Im updating to
LVSW 4-23 Full, Radio 1.40.30.00, SPL 2.10.Oli, IPL 1.04
seeing if any difference comes out.
This is not the first time this issue has been reported:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-301003.html
The conclusion is that it's hardware related. It may be as simple as one of the internal ribbon connectors having a less than firm connection. It may be brought on my anything from physical movement or pressure to internal pressure if the device gats warm. However, it is possible that there is a failing component. IMHO, a case of take it for replacement/repair or first check connectors if your brave and not worried about a warranty.

HHmmm interesting thread .. the only issue i have out of that is the fade to white one.
Maybe Hardware .. i got the phone off ebay and now it has a crack in it .. so i dare say it isnt under warranty any more. (even though its a max of 6 months old).
It may also be software. I experienced the WSOD on my JASJAM when playing with the GPS-related DLL's. Once this problem appeared when switching on the camera. The screen would turn white and soft reset would not fix this, only power off/on would sort it out. Seems that the drivers do not reset (some of) the hardware to a known state on boot.
Had EXACTLY the same problem. Hoped it would be a software problem. Hard-reset a few times to no avail. Upgraded to a couple of the WM6 ROMs. No change. I did notice that when it was cool it tended not to happen, but after being on the phone a couple minutes or using the PDA for a while, it would do it AGAIN.
One weird thing I noticed was that if I did a Soft-reset and held down the Left Soft-key, I could "force" it to fade to white on start-up! VERY WEIRD.
I finally bit the bullet, and sent it back to Telstra to get it sorted. Didn't want to void warranty myself.
It has been just over 2 weeks since I sent it off, and They have sent this reply...

So, I guess it IS a hardware problem. But then again, that kind of reply, sounds a bit "dodgy" as it doesn't seem to "technical" does it?
Hope this helps.

Their reply was not very technical - does not surprise me however. The people who repair these devices are usually faced with some component/connection/screen or a m/board that needs replaced. They often fail to take account of something as basic as the case pressing on the screen or other components - particularly when device is warm. So they replace the component they think is faulty and then discover the problem is still there. With this issue in particular I think that there are no faulty components just the case is a fraction of a millimetre too tight for the internal components and hence swapping out parts can have no effect. With this fault I advise people to go for a replacement not a repair if possible.
NB: This issue should not be confused with white screen that may appear after installing particular software or when an application crashes, or when the flashing of a new ROM goes wrong! The hardware issue arises most commonly when the device gets warm or put another way goes white after maybe 10 minutes of use and will continue to go white even after hard reset.
Mike
I have this same problem! =(
My phone screen recently (4-5 days ago) started to go white. I never saw this happen with my own eyes but when i picked up my phone and its sleeping i push the power button to get to an all white screen. I can hear noises when i touch the screen but no image other than white. I can solve this by removing the battery and putting it back in, then my scren works fine....its not verry often just like 1-3 times a day.
I want to try a hard reset but have a question first: My phone is unlocked by the ebay guy i got it from, will a hard reset lock my phone back to Cingular?
Next i want to try upgrading my ROM and Radio and anything else...im looking in the wiki for instructions on how to do this. Any help? What else shouls i upgrade?
Ive only had my Hermes for around 2 months so im new to much of this.
THanks!
I recently purchased a Used Imate Jasjam (Ex Telstra Australia) with this issue.
I pulled the unit apart, and reseated and pressed the Power and LCD Display Data Cables... attempting to ensure they were firmly fastened.
I then upgraded to LVSW's Latest WM6 Release.
I have had the Phone go to White once in that timeframe since. I brought it back by pressing the power button of, then one again.
I don't feel that it's really a "100%" Faulty Part... Because it works fine othertimes. It almost seems as if connections or a Data Cable has an Issue.
I'm intending tonight and using the Phone over the weekend to see if the issue continues to occur.
BAD NEWS!!
Well, got my phone back after a bit over 3 weeks I think? I kept ringing the repair center and emailing. Finally they said it was ready, and was sent back to the shop I bought it from. Rang the shop "no it's not here yet, we will ring you"... now the repair centre to the shop is a 20 min drive... on the 3rd, I rang again at 1pm and "no it's not here yet, we will ring you when it arrives." At this point I was really getting p*ed off. So I went to the shop, and demanded, and guess what was AT the Shop?!?!?!
Anyway, after 1 friggin day, I have lost the Red & Green phone buttons! As of tonight the whole bottom section no longer work, and the screen has gone white again.
The repair report listed 3 things replaced...one was a "bezel" another was a "poly" something. I will get the report a list the replaced bits if anyone likes, but their descriptions are kind of strange if ya ask me.
Anyway, I have to send the phone back for repairs again, which could take another 3 weeks +, which I think is completely PATHETIC OF TELSTRA, especially for the fact they dont give the same phone or even similar to "loan" while I wait for my defective $1300 phone to get "repaired"... (more like 'fiddled with' & "yeah, she'll be right mate"...
GRRRRR!!!!
My girlfriends phone was having the same problem. Try popping out your SD card and putting the phone into/out of sleep and see if that brings back a visible screen. Thats how we determined her situation was a hardware problem and not a problem with the rom.

Yes, sadly this is kind of predictable as I said in an earlier post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1233420&postcount=7
This is why, as I said, get a replacement not a repair if possible. My view is that the individual components are fine but connectors come loose or the heat generated causes pressure to be put on the screen etc So it's a problem with some cases and how the innards in some cases get squeezed. So off course changing the top poly board, connectors, bezel gasket, may by pot luck make a difference but is just as likely to make no difference at all.

Status Report:
After having my phone playing Video's Through the Night (My Way of a "Stress Test" to Generate Heat) I woke up the find the screen to be "almost completely" White.
Usually its gone completely, however in this instance I was able to see the icons through the whitewash.
I put the phone into sleep and back out and the Display is fine again.
Being that these phones are much easier to pull apart and put back together than my old JasJar I might to do some further experimentation.
I think the issue will have something to do with either one of the following
- Heat
- Pressure on the LCD from Parts Around it
- Faulty Ribbon or Power Leads to the LCD
My suggestions
- In the Case of Heat... I'll run the Same Test, with the Phone Directly in front of a small airconditioning unit I have.
- In the Case of Pressure, I'm going to look and see if I can place some extra Insulation Tape or Similar on the Phone to relieve this
- I wish I could find somewhere to buy the Replacement Ribbon Cables but I don't know where I can get them in Australia... any ideas?

- In the Case of Pressure, I'm going to look and see if I can place some extra Insulation Tape or Similar on the Phone to relieve this
- I wish I could find somewhere to buy the Replacement Ribbon Cables but I don't know where I can get them in Australia... any ideas?

We wait to see. Mind you one guy on these boards found he could get half an hour from his device if he put it in the freezer for a while - so I'm not sure that air-con will be strong enough!!!
Mike
Well Results.....
After pulling apart the unit and reconnected, I think I found my cause to simply be excess pressure.
I've removed the "Black Plastic" Micro SD Card from its Blanking Plate.
Since I've done this... not one White Screen Whatsoever.
I don't use an SD Card, so the issue is resolved for me, however it is very interesting.
Could be Pressure or Heat (Small Hole Might Increase Airflow/Allow for Greater Dissapation or something)
Hi folks,
i've also small experience with this "white screen" issue and just wanted to inform you about it.
I got the device from my former boss who did already complain about this "white screen" issue on his O² XDA trion with original ROM. (honestly i did not really believe him due to my experience with couple of other devices so after i got the device i was just wondering - ok back to the facts).
I installed on Friday the Windows Mobile VI Pro - BLACK 2.5 Release and until today it was running (as far as i remember expect one time) nearly perfect w/o white screens. About 45min ago, i flashed the device with BLACK 3.0 Release and got until now about 5-10 times a white screen.
I assume this is not a hardware ONLY issue but indeed very strange.
I'll go back to 2.5 and will look forward if i get again the white screen or it'll be ok.
Cheers so far

You are right to ask the question "is it hardware or software".
1
We know a white screens can arise if folk duff up flashing a new ROM.
2
We know there is a hardware caused white screen that comes and goes often when device gets warm.
3
But there maybe white screens caused by some kinds of crashing software or a buggy ROM etc
Crucially in terms of finding a cure will be distiguishing between these.
2 for most people is easy - take it back and get a replacement.
1 is a matter for the ROM upgrading and fixing boards
3 is a case of trying different ROMs testing 3 party software by selective installation until the problem starts or stops.
In your case I am worried that this is a number 2 device as it did sometimes get the problem before you flashed the ROM and now it's worse. It may only be worse because this particular ROM is generating more heat and consequently more white screens. (see explanations elsewhere).
I suppose if it's an occasional problem you might live with it but otherwise it's replacement at best and repair as a rather dodgy alternative.
Mike
Hey Mike,
well, before flashing the device with a custom ROM, in my opinion it was really difficult to use it.
By flashing it with V 2.5, it was very good usable and with V 3.0 it returned to become more unusable. Nevertheless, i upgraded 10min ago with HARD-SPL-V7 and it's running fine now (i've been wating with downgrading to V 2.5. If it returns to become unstable, i will downgrade to V 2.5 again.
I'll keep you informed.
yes for this particular "white screen" issue it will be useful to hear how things go - thanks
Mike
White screen - in my case definitely a hardware issue
Hi folks,
i was testing and playing around with my Hermes and today i found the problem (very funny because now i can't reproduce it anymore but just read ahead).
Today i was playing around and after pressing by accident on the case of the Hermes, the screen appeared disappeared and changed into white.
Please download the video i recorded from the attached link - you'll see that it was able to reproduce it by tapping on the case:
http://asuka.descipe.de/dphome/test/HTC_Hermes_White_Screen_issue.mp4
Please use VLC or MPC (additional codecs required) to watch the movie.
Honestly i'm not sure if this can be reproduced by anyone but this makes the whole situation much more clear.
Any feedback is welcome.
Cheers
Hi All,
First, let me introduce myself. I'm a software developer (C#/ASP.NET primarily) from Melbourne, Australia. I've had my HP rw6828 for a few years now and have found xda-dev to be a fantastic wealth of information. I've flashed this phone countless times with many different ROMs, and poked around 'under the hood' with the registry etc and played around with getting TouchFLO working, etc.
Anyway, just bought a (barely) used (still had original screen protector etc on) G1 from eBay (from the US). Got it yesterday and while it's a great phone I'm not sure if the issue I'm having is hardware or software related.
Basically, sometimes (I can't yet determine whether it's just random or if something causes it... I'm still experimenting) when I push certain keys, it's like two keys are being pushed at the same time. For example, I push the [W] key and it types "6w". Makes typing "www." for web-browsing a royal PITA! The reverse also appears to be true, i.e. i push [6] and it also types "6w".
Several keys are messsed up like this, for example [1] or [y] results in "y1", [2] or [5] results in "52", or [n] results in "ns", etc.
I'm totally new to Android and the G1, and this is how I bought it, but Settings > About Phone shows the following:
Model Number: HTC_Dream
Firmware version: 1.1
Baseband version: 62.33.20.08H_1.22.14.11
Kernel version: 2.6.25-01845-g85d4f0d [email protected]#27
Build number: 1.51.0.1 PLAT-1.0 126986 test-keys
Can anyone shed some light on the topic?
Cheers,
Sam.
I would think it would be a software related issue. If you are familiar with rooting, flashing, etc, try flashing to RC29 then installing a JF modded firmware or a Haykuro build firmware.
It looks like hardware
Unfortunately it appears to be a hardware fault actually. I noticed that it was working correctly, then i opened and closed the screen and it was broken again. I then gave it a gentle twist, i.e. the whole housing, and it was okay. I'd say there's a bad connection inside. I was really hoping for a software bug so that i could easily fix it, but at least I now know the cause I might open it up and take a look.
Thanks for your suggestion anyway.
If its a bad connection (as you believe), then that is the easiest thing to fix. Just open it up and reconnect the various connections.
However, I wouldn't conclude that it is hardware just by what you've experienced. Opening, closing, or twisting shouldn't have any effect on the keyboard since it is just the DISPLAY that moves.
Where did you get your phone? I would think it is a hardware issue and would require either servicing or a replacement.

eBay, used. Since I gave it a bit of mechanical adjustment, it's been fine.
Out of interest though, can anyone tell me (from what I posted in the first post) what exactly I'm running on this phone? I.e. is it a form of the original OS, or is it a cooked version?
Cheers,
Sam.
Try googling the kernel version #. Bunch of hits on that. I only looked for a minute or two, but looks like it could be a german RC-9?
did it hold up
I noticed that this post was from awhile ago, and I was wondering if adjusting the inners fixed it and for how long. I just recently bought one on ebay and it too is having the same problem. Also how hard was it to get to the connector that needs to be adjusted?
I have this problem some time ago (2-3 weeks ago) when my phone come back from service. You can try to repair it by strongly shaking (but be careful to don't throw it on f.e. wall ). Several times this repairs phone for hour or two, but after two days the problem has gone permanently and my phone still works perfectly.
This problem is related to one of connectors in phone. I tried to root, flash another ROM but only strong shaking something helped.
Hi,
just recently I bought a used Legend when I was abroad. It seemed to work alright at the shop but I soon discovered that it had a few flaws.
First the symptoms:
The Notification panel rolls down when I touch the screen often rendering the touch screen useless.
Typing on the keyboard in upright position brings down the panel, but if i tilt it it typing the letter "P" will give me "Q"
Some times the screen will start flickering when I hold my finger 10mm above the screen.
The HTC weather app does not show the correct local weather - 3rd party works.
Then to the problem solving attempts:
Reboot - solves the problem for a short while
Resetting to factory defaults - same as above
Disassembled to check for lose components or particles - none found and warranty void I know...
OTA update - I got the 2.1-updat1 2 days ago and the phone worked fine for3-4hrs before it started acting up again. HTC Weather was working.
OTA upgrade - got 2.2 yesterday and had another 3-4hrs without symptoms. HTC Weather app was working.
And a couple of questions:
1) Is it hardware or software?
2) If software - how can it be solved? I`m ok with rooting etc. but would prefer a less time consuming solution. I`m in a Linux environment.
3) If it is hardware - I would probably be able to replace the digitizer (if that`s the problem) but how do i locate it for sure?
4) Would this problem be logged in the phone if so how do i access it?
Software info:
Android version
2.2
Baseband version
47.51.35.17u_7.13.35.05
Kernel version
2.6.32.17-g30929af
htc-kernel(at)and18-2 #1
Wed Dec 1 15:10:40 CST 2010
Build number
3.15.405.3 CL291292 release-keys
Software number
3.15.405.3
Browser version
webkit 3.1
I could send it in for repair but since the warranty is voided it would probably cost a small fortune and since I find it quite satisfactory to mend things I would really appreciate all the help I could get.
Cheers!

I do not Know how much time you spend with disassembling but it took me about one hour to root it and i was new to this
i think a lot of people can do it in less
i'm on linux too and it is not an problem ( look around for the linux method of creating the goldcard it is realy easy )
i had a similar problem when i tryed to use a screen protector
after removing this and aplying a new clean one it worked ok ( but not great )
after removing this new one it worked great
the legend screen is so scratch resistant that i prefer not to have anything on it
Good luck resolving the problem and please if you manage post how you did it
i'm curious !!
Well, took me about half an hour to disassemble and put the thing back together.
Thanks for the tip about screen protectors - have`nt used any but I thoroughly inspected and cleaned the screen just in case. So that one is ruled out
Any other with ideas of whats most likely, a hardware or a software/firmware error?
I will post if I get it resolved.
BTW: I`m in Oslo, Norway anyone that can recomend a good repair shop?
Hi gesax,
I just started having this very same problem a couple of days ago.
I was about to take my phone appart, but thanks to your post I at least know that it wont change anything (thank you for that)
Quite worried, cause I'm pretty much the only person in Argentina with an HTC Legend, so no chance of sending it to a repair shop
By any chance you found a solution to your problem? or did you have it fixed?
Thanks!
Noah
Have the exact same problem. Haven't found any solution. I'm gonna turn it in.
I have a theory, that usage in cold weather (well below zero) might have caused this...
Anyone who can confirm or dismiss my theory?
Sent from my HTC Legend.
I had the same
New screen for me after bring it to assistance
Yes, it happen to me. It's definitively an hardware problem.
Had this before. Well can't say exactly what the problem is. Might be HW or SW or maybe both. It happened twice to me. Once by software, more like rom actually. After a few days with CM, it stated acting weird. Reflash and everything is good. The other time is because water vapour got between my screen protector and screen. Thus resulting in such effects you're experiencing.

My Legend's in vigorous use in -20 C weather here in Canada. It's not that, trust me.
