Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone knew why my Weather tab has suddenly started mis-reporting my location as Oldham. I'm actually a few miles away. Up until recently it always found and reported the location of my fairly small home town accurately, and worked great elsewhere too.
Now however, it keeps defaulting to Oldham. It also sometimes says Rochdale, or occasionally Manchester. These are inaccurate too. Just a couple of weeks ago it always got my location right, but now it hardly ever does. It seems to have suddenly lost its ability to pinpoint my location, so simply defaults to a nearby large town or city, despite the fact I'm miles away from them.
Incidentally, the four dots around the GPS logo (next to the name of My Location) no longer 'gyrate' while updating. They used to rotate in a 'wobbly' orbit around the globe logo in the centre, presumably to indicate GPS activity. Now they just spin in a fixed orbit around the central point (GPS still works fine in TomTom7 and Google Maps etc).
I have Location Service enabled, and allow it to gather data on my location at any time. The problem remains the same whether I'm connected via WiFi or HSDPA, or both.
Does My Location actually use GPS, or just cell towers? Like I said, it worked fine up until recently. I know people have had various problems with the Weather tab, but I can't find anyone with this exact problem on here. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Rob.
Mate, the GPS is the least of your worries. If Oldham is the nearest place of interest to you, you should move home!

lol
But on a serious note, weather worked fine for me, until one day I did a hard reset.
Now I have not once had the correct location at home.
Weird ay?
I suspect that your weather location is tied to your local cell.
GF is on t-mob and I'm on O2, our HD2s regularly report our local weather location as being in different places even though we're both on the same sofa, my guess is that it depends on which cell signal is strongest, maybe your local one is temporarily down?

That's my point; Oldham ISN'T my nearest town, but the damn phone keeps sticking it on my Weather tab anyway. My phone has never even been to Oldham!
My Desk in work officially sits between Brockworth and Hucclecoat. I get different locations at each side of my desk. It does sound like its a cell tower problem to me.
Yup depending where i am in town i get either north lincolnshire or appleby its very annoying
it doesn't use gps...uses information from the cell tower your phone is currently using. If that cell tower is labelled Oldham, then that's what you'll get.
I get saddleworth most of the time. I got tameside once which would be better
if i am getting hsdpa signal it's correct if i get 3g signal it reports wrong location.
Same here. I often get Poplar when I'm travelling through Hackney.
I experienced the same problem. It's weird that when I use Wifi, the location is about 30 miles away from where I am. But using 3g, it points to a couple miles away which is acceptable
here is one for you.. lmao
If I am upstairs at my computer I get Richmond, if I am in the guest room dirrectly below my desk down stairs, im in Preston. now if I force it to update, im in Smithfield until I get back to my computer and wait 15 minutes were I am once again, back in Richmond...
at leasts yours works, my location hasnt worked in the 2 months i had the hd2 works fine on my hero lolol

Funny, it's the other way round for me - it's generally accurate if I'm getting a 3G connection, but when it's HSDPA (most of the time) it usually shows up wrong (I'm on T-Mobile).
Anyway, thanks all for the replies. Nice to know it isn't a fault on my handset at least. Doesn't sound like there's much we can do about it though.
Cheers,
Rob.

It'll depend on which cell it's connecting to then. It's probably connecting to an H-enabled tower which is in Glamorous Oldham, and the fallback cell is just 3G/GPRS and closer to home.
i have the same issue, somethings its ok and recognises my location as swindon but in my house it says im in wroughton which is a small village about 5 miles away.
I had a problem like this, but mine was 100 or so miles out.
I found out it was to do with where my time settings were.
I chose manchester (closest major city [and home city for me]) for my time.
So it made the weather show manchester as my location.
now i've changed the time to my location, its the same in weather.
dont know how much use that is to you, worked for me though.
I was just wondering because my weather app for some reason is worse than the first hd2 I got. This one will not update if you tell it to. It will only update when it wants to. It seems on this new hd2 if I have anything that needs updating it doesnt ( google maps, weather, and my reception ) or accurate location. My google maps couldnt point me around the corner if it tried.
Could be just another problem.
I do have 3g signal and wifi going on it right now. So in all theories it should update with the correct weather. Instead it keeps yesterdays weather forcast and that was updated at 6:04pm

The weather app will have issues updating whenever it can't find your location via aGPS. Since you're saying that gmaps is having issues too, it sounds like you're having GPS issues in general on the new unit.
I would start by running QuickGPS once, and then make sure your GPS settings both on the phone and in gmaps are set to "managed by windows"
you sure about agps? it's my understanding that my location gets its info from cell tower info,

Yeah you're right...it's the location service that it uses, not the aGPS, I goofed. However, sometimes I've had trouble getting my location to update after a hard-reset until I get the full aGPS/GPS connection working in something like gmaps. Not sure why, but that always seems to kick-start it in to behaving.
Now, I did just see the OP mention in another thread that they're having trouble with 3G general, so that's probably more the issue than anything else.
For some reason my weather location on my home screen is now showing "Brooking" instead of Kansas City. I have never even heard of Brooking. This won't change back to Kansas City no matter how many times I manually update it. It should read Kansas City, I live in Kansas City and it was working fine until a couple of hours ago. Anyone have any ideas on this?
Thanks
Brooking is just south east of KC in MO. I have the same issue with mine showing Salida, CO which is a tiny town just south west of Denver(where I live). Seems to be an issue with how the weather widget handles location. I am now using beautiful widgets with no problems. I made a post about this last week and no one seemed to know anything.
By chance are either of you using an Airave?
I used to live in Independence, MO, and my location was showing Overland Park before I moved to Denver. I was using an Airave, and that was the cause of the incorrect location. Sprint will tell you that the Airave can mess up location based services.
Anyway, I noticed this when 2.1 roms first came out (didn't happen on 1.5 roms for some reason) and this is the cause. If you shut off your airave, reboot your phone, it should be correct.
Hope this helps.
for what ever reason, if wifi is on this can happen also, as it will use wifi to detect location and this can and usually will point to a server base. disable wifi, and have the weather update through ev and it will also correct this issue, until wifi is enabled again.
My wifi wasn't on, and I don't use Airave...not sure what the issue was for me, I did manage to get it fixe by doing a NANdroid restore...I lost a couple of downloads from the market, but they were easy to get back.
Thanks for the responses though, it was very much appreciated
Does anyone know if there is a way to update google's wifi database manually... It seems to me that it should maybe do this for the first couple weeks, but if you allow them to collect location data, the database should fix itself. I did have the problem on the stock 1.5 ROM too. No AirRave.
I'm in Independence and mine went to brooking too. I just turned on gps, manually updated and it went back to the right location.

I guess its kind of network related, so I have found out that where I live it doesn't matter where I go My Location is not going to work the cell towers just don't have it turned on or support it, what I want to know is there anything I can do like moan at them request it or anything like that who would I contact, I'm on Virgin UK so would I contact Virgin them selves or would I go to T-mobile seen as apparently Virgin uses T-mobiles Cell Towers,
any advice would be great or if any one knows where t point me in the right direction will be much appreciated
...BUMP*
really no one??
Maybe try running QuickGPS and see if that helps.
no as my first post states, its doesn't work at all in the town where i live been confirmed by 4 network operators trying to find out who i can ***** at to try and get it working round here lol
Well the HD2 does GPS and aGPS so it doesnt matter if the cell towers do or dont support it aslong as you can connect to a satellite. And what program are you trying to use?
well quick gps has been updated, agps is turned on, i can get a lock on google maps and have full H signal, yet when i update my weather in the town i live
"Connection Error, there was a connection error while attempting to download weather data. retry?"
now if i go out of my town say 5 miles it will connect first time locate me and update the weather. strange hey, spoke to 15 people that have smart phones and not one of them in this town ever got the weather to update. we all have to use the Weather city editor to add our town
oh yeah i have tried with wifi on its own, H on its own, gprs on its own, gps, no gps, not one combo works around here,
I don't think it's a connection issue. I see that in some small towns in my area you can't get any weather updates for certain spots and it's not cuz of the connection it's because there are no weather dopplers or weather antenna's recording any weather data.

kinda of my point in the first post lol, just wondering if there is anyone i could contact to find out how there could be?
Maybe its the weather city editor? I know on my Tmo HD2 it added my town after the GPS located me.
at that point my friend I think you would have to contact a weather station and find out if they have anything or contact the advanced tech support to even find out if they have any data at all for weather in that area. other than that your up a creek without a weather report lol
it doesn't work with or without weather city editor so it isn't that, I no why it isn't working that's not what im posting for lol
So contacting T-mobile wouldn't really help, I'll get some info from a weather station or something, got a week off see what I can do lol, keep ya posted
my location seems to put me in washington dc but i live in michigan so the closest location to me for what i'm trying to do would be lansing, mi.
I'm using speedtest.net app and other apps too but my main concern is it keeps thinking i'm in washington dc. Anyone know how to resolve this? I've had this issue on every android build i've tried.
I also just checked my fiance's phone it's a stock mytouch3g 3.5mm jack and it does the same thing
i have the same problem too, even back then on winmo. my location shows place about 10-20 km from mine.
unless you are on GPS, it will never be 100% accurate, because it locates you depending on your "cell location", i.e what broadcasting tower your connecting to. which may be wrong due to google, or your carrier not updating records etc.
just live with it i'm afraid!
oh and the speedtest app bases it's location on IP Address, not cell tower location, thus it will never put you in the correct location, because mobile ip address's do not have a set location, so they simply associate with a random city, usually larger ones.
but i've turned on gps and use google maps...
has the gps got a lock?
my location still probably defaults to GSM location, because otherwise it would turn on gps everytime you update your location!
also google is not very good with this feature.
because today i was sitting in a room, and the location jumped from two loactions constantly! one was correct, while the other was quite far

I'm runnning darkstone HD2Froyo v1 on my phone (along with the UK o2 ROM 1.72, radio 2.15 and HSPL 2.08) but the location doesnt work at all.
Any suggestions as to how I can resolve this? If another 'droid build is needed, a link to the relevant page on XDA would be much appreciated.

Darkstone has updated his build to 1.5, just for your information. This consumes a lot less battery.
Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870518&page=151 and scroll back a few pages from there. There a atleast 3 solutions listed. Hope this helps.

The T-Mobile I.P. address is in Washington, so when you ping, it thinks you are there. If you check on help on "speed.net" there is a section/link for such a question and it points to the service they use for locating I.P addressed and how it updates.
