Weather Issue - Hero CDMA General

For some reason my weather location on my home screen is now showing "Brooking" instead of Kansas City. I have never even heard of Brooking. This won't change back to Kansas City no matter how many times I manually update it. It should read Kansas City, I live in Kansas City and it was working fine until a couple of hours ago. Anyone have any ideas on this?
Thanks

Brooking is just south east of KC in MO. I have the same issue with mine showing Salida, CO which is a tiny town just south west of Denver(where I live). Seems to be an issue with how the weather widget handles location. I am now using beautiful widgets with no problems. I made a post about this last week and no one seemed to know anything.

By chance are either of you using an Airave?
I used to live in Independence, MO, and my location was showing Overland Park before I moved to Denver. I was using an Airave, and that was the cause of the incorrect location. Sprint will tell you that the Airave can mess up location based services.
Anyway, I noticed this when 2.1 roms first came out (didn't happen on 1.5 roms for some reason) and this is the cause. If you shut off your airave, reboot your phone, it should be correct.
Hope this helps.

for what ever reason, if wifi is on this can happen also, as it will use wifi to detect location and this can and usually will point to a server base. disable wifi, and have the weather update through ev and it will also correct this issue, until wifi is enabled again.

My wifi wasn't on, and I don't use Airave...not sure what the issue was for me, I did manage to get it fixe by doing a NANdroid restore...I lost a couple of downloads from the market, but they were easy to get back.
Thanks for the responses though, it was very much appreciated

Does anyone know if there is a way to update google's wifi database manually... It seems to me that it should maybe do this for the first couple weeks, but if you allow them to collect location data, the database should fix itself. I did have the problem on the stock 1.5 ROM too. No AirRave.

I'm in Independence and mine went to brooking too. I just turned on gps, manually updated and it went back to the right location.

Telus HTC Hero Location

Does anyone else have trouble with their Telus HTC Hero getting the complete wrong location (or being completely unable to determine a location)? This is with GPS off using Google Location Services.
In Oshawa, it can't find my location, in Woodbridge is thinks I'm in Espoo, Finland, and in North York it thought I was in Georgetown, Guyana. Driving on the 407 it thought I was in Malaysia. Sometimes the phone gets the location correct in these areas, too, but most of the time the location is either unavailable or wrong. If GPS is on it all works perfectly.
Calling Telus results in them telling me they've never heard of this problem before (also that I'm their first call about the HTC Hero, lol). Calling HTC resulted in them telling me that this was expected as the Telus network was new and Google was still working on their location services database with the new networks here.
Therefore, I'm asking to see if anyone else has a similar issue (especially in the same general area) and if not, what could possibly me wrong on my end.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Yup, same problem here on the west coast. According to the phone I am a well traveled man, from Vancouver to some where in Croatia, to Finland, and last night Dublin. Maybe my phone want to go out and see the world?
Yeah same here. I was in some weird places apparently and actually right now I'm in Tanjong Karang. Last night my timezone changed as well, not sure why. It should have been syncing to the network, unchecking/checking the sync to network fixed it though.
OT: Do you guys ever have your browser give an apache error? Yet all other apps continue to work? I have this fairly often and I have to turn off the radio competely and turn it back on to fix it. Really annoying.
Yeah I get the apache error too. It seems to be the homepage of the browser.
Mine works fine usually on the Rogers network - but they've had the iPhone for a while which uses network locational services as well so I guess they've got most of the glitches out. The worst I've had is when it just says "current city" but the temperature reporting looks fine.
Mine (on Rogers) works fine in Alberta - never had a wrong location.
The Rogers network is already very well established so I can't say as though I'm surprised.

I'm not in OLDHAM!!!!!! (Weather tab question)

Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone knew why my Weather tab has suddenly started mis-reporting my location as Oldham. I'm actually a few miles away. Up until recently it always found and reported the location of my fairly small home town accurately, and worked great elsewhere too.
Now however, it keeps defaulting to Oldham. It also sometimes says Rochdale, or occasionally Manchester. These are inaccurate too. Just a couple of weeks ago it always got my location right, but now it hardly ever does. It seems to have suddenly lost its ability to pinpoint my location, so simply defaults to a nearby large town or city, despite the fact I'm miles away from them.
Incidentally, the four dots around the GPS logo (next to the name of My Location) no longer 'gyrate' while updating. They used to rotate in a 'wobbly' orbit around the globe logo in the centre, presumably to indicate GPS activity. Now they just spin in a fixed orbit around the central point (GPS still works fine in TomTom7 and Google Maps etc).
I have Location Service enabled, and allow it to gather data on my location at any time. The problem remains the same whether I'm connected via WiFi or HSDPA, or both.
Does My Location actually use GPS, or just cell towers? Like I said, it worked fine up until recently. I know people have had various problems with the Weather tab, but I can't find anyone with this exact problem on here. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Rob.
Mate, the GPS is the least of your worries. If Oldham is the nearest place of interest to you, you should move home!

lol
But on a serious note, weather worked fine for me, until one day I did a hard reset.
Now I have not once had the correct location at home.
Weird ay?
I suspect that your weather location is tied to your local cell.
GF is on t-mob and I'm on O2, our HD2s regularly report our local weather location as being in different places even though we're both on the same sofa, my guess is that it depends on which cell signal is strongest, maybe your local one is temporarily down?

That's my point; Oldham ISN'T my nearest town, but the damn phone keeps sticking it on my Weather tab anyway. My phone has never even been to Oldham!
My Desk in work officially sits between Brockworth and Hucclecoat. I get different locations at each side of my desk. It does sound like its a cell tower problem to me.
Yup depending where i am in town i get either north lincolnshire or appleby its very annoying
it doesn't use gps...uses information from the cell tower your phone is currently using. If that cell tower is labelled Oldham, then that's what you'll get.
I get saddleworth most of the time. I got tameside once which would be better
if i am getting hsdpa signal it's correct if i get 3g signal it reports wrong location.
Same here. I often get Poplar when I'm travelling through Hackney.
I experienced the same problem. It's weird that when I use Wifi, the location is about 30 miles away from where I am. But using 3g, it points to a couple miles away which is acceptable
here is one for you.. lmao
If I am upstairs at my computer I get Richmond, if I am in the guest room dirrectly below my desk down stairs, im in Preston. now if I force it to update, im in Smithfield until I get back to my computer and wait 15 minutes were I am once again, back in Richmond...
at leasts yours works, my location hasnt worked in the 2 months i had the hd2 works fine on my hero lolol

Funny, it's the other way round for me - it's generally accurate if I'm getting a 3G connection, but when it's HSDPA (most of the time) it usually shows up wrong (I'm on T-Mobile).
Anyway, thanks all for the replies. Nice to know it isn't a fault on my handset at least. Doesn't sound like there's much we can do about it though.
Cheers,
Rob.

It'll depend on which cell it's connecting to then. It's probably connecting to an H-enabled tower which is in Glamorous Oldham, and the fallback cell is just 3G/GPRS and closer to home.
i have the same issue, somethings its ok and recognises my location as swindon but in my house it says im in wroughton which is a small village about 5 miles away.
I had a problem like this, but mine was 100 or so miles out.
I found out it was to do with where my time settings were.
I chose manchester (closest major city [and home city for me]) for my time.
So it made the weather show manchester as my location.
now i've changed the time to my location, its the same in weather.
dont know how much use that is to you, worked for me though.

HTC's Weather Using Bad Current Location

I have now rooted my Hero and updated to the Fresh 2.0d ROM and was hoping that my problem with the weather widget would be fixed. I used to live in Colorado Springs and now live in southern Denver and for both locations it shows my current location as some dinky town 15 miles from either location directly in between. I always assumed this is the location of the Sprint tower I was connecting to, but looking at the map, this is unlikely due to the terrain. I am now using Beautiful Widgets and they have at least a better resolution, if not perfect. Has anyone else noticed this issue? If so has anyone been in the weather widget code enough to try and fix it?
are you using an airave? if so it is a known problem with them, sprint will even tell you that it messes with location services
nope... 3G and wifi(at home).

Google Location Service unavailable (only with cell tower info, GPS working fine)

I've been looking through google to find posts related to the google location service, but can't really find an exact match to my problem. All the N1 users post complain that the GPS is not working fine, which is not at all my issue.
About a week ago my location service using cell tower info stopped working. I used the Desire r21 rom and switched back to Kang-o-rama 0.6 and it stopped working around the same timeframe, however I don't think it is at all related to the rom switch.
I tried wipping all the data again, in hopes it was just a messed up setting with no avail. Also turned off the cell phone radio and back on (airplane mode). Tried to switch from 3G to 2G and back.
Anyone have an idea what could be wrong. Also, I read that google's service sometimes goes down and that could be a cause, however I would have imagined that some else would have complained by now.
Thanks guys!!
There are a whole bunch of reasons this could happen, in my experience, they're usually network related. New towers, repairing towers, etc..
My "My location" service went down for approximately 3 weeks recently. Wouldn't work on any of my phones, Android or WinMo. One day it just started working again.
Currently, when I am at the office, "my location" thinks I'm somewhere hundreds of miles from where I am. I suspect someone at AT&T entered the Lat/Lon of the main tower I'm on incorrectly. When I'm elsewhere in my city (closer to another tower) "my location" places me correctly.
Edit: That reminds me.. when I'm at the office and the phone is on WiFi "my location" knows where I am and it has very good accuracy (like within a block).. I always wondered if that was a result of Google Maps mapping Mac addresses, or if they can do that with IP..
So sure enough, I checked it out in San Jose, CA today at work and it found my location within a quarter of a mile. When I got home (Hollister), the google map ticker still shows me in San Jose and when I click on "My Location" in the menu it just stays in SJ.
But here is the even odder thing. My finance has an iphone and her location service is spot on in Hollister without the GPS.
I have seen posts saying it may be an old sim card, but this one just got replaced when I upgraded to the TILT 2 a few months ago.
I guess we will just have to keep waiting until the service comes back for us.
My N1 has been doing the same thing lately. I will leave work and about 1/2 hour later when I look at Google maps, the locator service still shows me at work. I wonder if the location service has a certain polling interval.

if ur on the rom that came with the device ur the problem but if u moded the rom sayin u downloaded a rom from xda or members then u need to go back to the rom thread u downloaded ur rom from and let them in that rom help u and always remember to do a search before startin a new thread
Did my research, im on stock rom location services enabled. No reception problems
But thanx anyway...
Are you connected to a PC? If so try this
On the Windows Mobile Device Center window under Settings click Connection Settings. Then uncheck Allow data connections on device when connected to PC and select The Internet for This computer is connected to. I don't recall much about activesync, but I think it has something similar.
I ran into a similar issue and this solved it.

It doesn’t work for me either. Actually, doesn’t work in Orlando area, but if I go to other cities here in Florida it does (on 3g or not)
The only way that I can make it to work here is turning on the wifi without connecting to any wifi, then turn it off and tap “ Uptade Now” or tap "update now" while the wifi is searching for connection.
ya i called t-mobile about this yesterday there sending me a replacement phone mybe its a hardware problem

Mmmm, I don't think it's a hardware problem, at least for me. It does work in other areas.
@ nardone, etc....are you all able to open google maps and get any localization there (either with or without satellites)?
On the few occassions I've had problems getting "my location" to update, it was cleared up as soon as I opened gmaps and got a full lock...so you can try that, at least make sure that it's not a hardware issue.
Hey, a fellow Orlando-an! I have the exact same problem with the My Location service here. I have Orlando put in as a manual location, and it updates every couple of hours as its supposed to. But for the My Location, it hasn't updated in 3 days.
Nothing more annoying than going outside in the blinding heat and sun to look down on your phone that says you are in the middle of a thunderstorm.
It doesn't seem to be a problem with the GPS or location system, as it updates my location fine(currently in Maitland, not Orlando, which is correct). But it doesn't download the weather for this location properly. Very troubling...

Go Magic!...
I'm not sure what's the problem. As I said it works on wifi and even when wifi is on and not connected to any network. It does work fine on Edge here in Orlando and also worked in 3G in Miami and Las Vegas.
I've been playing with it all afternoon at work(aren't they happy about that), and can't get it to update for the life of me. Tried turning on wifi, off and on HTC location service, disabling 3G, whatever I do it won't pull current weather data.
Maybe there just isn't anything to pull for Maitland, which is where I am at the moment, because the manual Orlando entry downloads fine. I wish there were a way to choose the location for my Cookie's hometab so it didn't show an incorrect thunderstorm.

Try Oviedo! lol j/k
There's actually an app around xda somewhere that lets you add cities that aren't in manila's database by default. I don't remember the exact location or name, but it works on multiple devices so it might just be in the general section. I'll try to look for it more when I get home later but you might find someone who remembers the name before I do, or just find it through searching.
It works!
For same reason that I don't know, my location is working fine today in Orlando, on 3G, H, and wifi...
Have you tried QuickGPS?? Works beautifully!!!!!
Make sure you have a data connection turned on... If you don't, it will not update automatically to your city or weather...
