Hi, can anyone advise as to why I lose the all sounds on an Orange Branded M3100 phone, other that Microsoft voice command 1.6 no other software has been installed! The details of the ROM are as follows
Operator Version: 14.123.1.614
ROM Version: 1.23.61.4
ROM Date: 07/13/06
Radio Version: 1.06.00.00
Protocol Version: 32.37.7010.01H
Here what happens no sound on the phone, reset the phone sound is now back, after a while, don’t know how long but the sound disappears, you get no ringing sound, menu click sounds nothing, reset the phone again and all is back, so it would suggest that it’s not a hardware failure but a software failure, how can I stop the orange branding installing itself after a cold reset in case something there is causing the problem, has anyone else came across this problem?
This is a brand new phone only received it Friday, does it need to go back?
Kind Regards
Dogo
I've recently noticed on my 8525 too, after a while it seems to just go on silent but the setting isn't changed it still set to on and no sound comes out of the phone no matter what program is used.
Phew, I thought it was just me..
I have noticed it may be something to do with the Bluetooth ear piece, although it always seems to happen when I have left the phone a while. and never when I try to check for the problem
To isolate whether this is hard or software you could try doing a full backup. Do a hard reset and let the device run for as long as it would normally take to show the problem, without any additional software. But do run wifi and power intensive applications to warm up the device - as this can cause internal connector problems.
If the problem is gone, this will tend towards a software problem although not an absolute guarantee. There are some issues that are related to both soft and hardware!! For example the screen fading to white issue can be caused by running (power intense) software that makes the device warm and that in turn causes pressure to be put on the screen.
A final thought, the speaker connection block is next to the stylus tip. There have been cases of the inserting and removing of the stylus causing the connector to become loose. This can cause intermittent sound or no sound at all. The warranty voiding fix is easy. Remove back and check connection is tight. No further dismantling needed. Ensure camera toggle arm is engaged before putting screws back in. (Rear Speaker)
The front speaker can also have issues. has spring contacts that can become slack - poor contact with m/board. There is a thread on checking this.

No Sound, not a Stylus issue
8525, ms voice dial 1.6,
HTweakC 2.0,
SBP Mobile Shell 1.0.0 build 2632.
ROM 1.34.502.1
radio 1.16.00.00
This has been happening about a week, nothing new installed. On Saturday I missed 12 calls because it was "auto-muted" nothing was on mute, just no ring sounds or anything else. I thought it might be some setting, I suspected that it didn't come back after I had set on vibrate for a meeting, so I went through everything, looks good. had to soft reset for audio to come back. Happened again Yesterday morning after being on charger, had to soft reset, happened again this morning after being on charger, had to soft reset. I'm suspicious of the charge ciruits, the phone was placed on a night-stand and I checked to make sure sound was working AFTER i plugged the charger in (i am an on-call engineer for hospitals) when I got up this AM the first thing I checked was the sound, no sound. Had to do a soft reset and sound is fine.
THIS IS VERY, VERY, VERY troubling.
i cant say that my sound has been "loose"

yep, I agree. My keyboard slider might be loose, but never had problems with the sound.
No sound - possible solutions
I too have had the no sound problem, but I also have a solution (well it seems to work for me and a few other people I know)
I have found that if I have more than about 800 sms messages on the phone (combined count across inbox, sent items, deleted etc...) my phone will decide sometimes to stop making any sounds.
Other symptoms include thew screen not going back to the background when problems are "closed" (well press the X button), sometimes not changing from portrait to landscape.
Hitting the reset key temporarily fixes the problem, but it strike again at any time...
I have seen this on both the official UK orange firmwares
As a side note, more than about 1000 sms messages and 5 unread sms messages and the phone will lock up about 10 seconds after the phone boots up. You have to be quick when the phone boots to go in to the sms inbox and delete 1 message before the phone locks up. This can be a bit tricky but i have done it a few times
from readingmany related threads, it looks like there are several causes for this issue. for me, it was definitely microsoft voice command 1.5 and 1.6. I turned off any notifications from voice command and my problem went away. no calendar voice announcements, no callerid, no bluetooth routing announcements, etc. voice command simply doesn't give up control of the audio sometimes, and it appears to occur most when it wakes up and announces something.
All I use voice command for now is voicedial. try that a while and see if you are fixed.
1.5 was worse, but 1.6 does it too.
good luck!

saga continues
It did it again, twice in one day. Picked up the phone, (it had been resting on the table for several hours). No sound, I tested by placing a call and turning speaker on.. this works! So the speaker (rear) is fine as well as the front (ear).
After I heard the speaker on speaker phone I tried hearing the dial tones or other sounds, none. No incoming ring.
Device and phone volume on FULL
Turn volume off, vibrate, on, off on, and from phone screen turn to vibrate then back to sound
Vibrate still works for inbound calls
Turn voice command off and on
Go to phone (in settings and play the ring I've chosen) and suddenly it’s working again?
I'll try the turning all but phone options in voice command to no-notify. But to tell you straight, this is silly, one more day of this and it's probably (unfortuately) crackberry city for me. I simply can't have a phone that doesn't ring. I guess some ittertation of an O2 would do.. but I'm not too keen on plopping down another 5bills....
any ideas?

I have just read your last two posts. I am wondering whether you are saying you have a sound/ringer problem OR whether you mean the phone sometimes crashes and therefore does not ring (i.e. you then need a soft reset) and sometimes you discover you've missed a call but never heard it ring.
If the above is true then I think you need to look for the solutions for avoiding hangs/freezing. I can guide you to these or a search will show them. It certainly does not appear that you have any physical problem with the speaker/earpieces.

Hi, I never had a sound issue untill I started usin my HT820's, but have noticed a few times lately that my device sounds arent working, (I dont mean always through to the bluetooth headset) and I just power off/on the device, I dont get that many calls, so I havent missed any, and wasnt sure if it was rom or bluetooth related for sure, but I do usually leave my bluetooth on, just not always the headsets, it also doesnt happen a whole lot.
Loose connector
I'm not sure if this will help anyone, but i was losing sound on my 8525. I had dropped my phone twice and the rear speaker connection had gotten loose so i opened it up following the directions at http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1152710&page=1&pp=15
and now i have sound again.
Continued Issues
Mike, thanks, the issue isn't with the phone locking up at all, it's been very stable, I think I've soft-reset probably 3 times in two months.
The phone literally will stop emitting any sounds. I can still hear if I place a call and if I place that call on speaker phone it's fine. However if you call the phone, try to play an audio file, etc there is no sound that emits from the device.
It did it AGAIN today, I tested, was able to place a call and put it on speaker and called it with my other phone, the pop up screen announcing the inbound call came up and everything else on the phone worked as it should (except no ring). I then went to settings phone and hit ok (top right of screen). BAM.. sound was working on the device again, inbound calls ring, able to play audio etc.
I did note one other possible anomaly, I have my PTT mapped to initiate voice command, when trying to use this I was unable to initiate voice command. After going to phone and pressing OK, voice command started working again. W/O voice command I'm sunk, I have 500+ contacts.
I placed a call to AT&T and I'm back on the "chronic retention" list.. ughhh.. I went through 8 treo's last time. I don't want another basket of refurbs to deal with, I like WM so much better than previous interfaces.. any ideas are very, very, very welcome.

More information
This morning, the sound was gone again, but I went into settings and started playing to see what else might induce it to work again, I tried voice command again, disabled and re-enabled, that didn't work.
I then went into sounds and that didn't work, went into Today, and Buttons neither of those worked, but when I went into input (didn't do anything, just opened it and closed it) sound started working again.
Hopefully, none of you guys have a newer ROM with the loud startup animation and attempted to turn down that volume via the registry as outlined in the wiki. Unfortunately, doing that also lowers the speaker volume so I just disabled the animation instead. Phone and bluetooth sounds fine but mp3 and everything else were also lowered to a whatever level depending on the startupanimation volume you set.
update
It did it to me again yesterday, this time only going to settings phone and pressing OK would make sound come back.
Today, the phone refused to dial or emit any sound. Would not come back after soft reset (would not dial, no sound) had to do a hard-reset (removed battery). After first soft reset a windows came up to advise that mobile voice command couldn't start...
For a darn near $500.00 phone this is pretty sad. Love the phone but gee whiz...
Daily occurance
Well, it does it every single day at least once a day, and I've noticed the phone has slowed a lot, sometimes during SMS or email the cursor goes away or I have to wait 20-30 seconds for words to complete typing after I've finished. I guess I'll get my refurb next week. Perhaps go back to palm.. dunno...
possible fix?
I turned OFF the SMS message sounds and it seems to be working w/o losing sounds again! I'll let it run for a couple of days and see if this is the deal, but I now have no audio announcement for ActiveSync, POP email, SMS, or MMS. I do have audio/vib for missed calls. Anyway, it's been up and running fine all day. Good Grief.
no fix in sight
On hold with ATT right now for another phone. It did it again today at about 10AM. Strange, it may be time sequential, but it didn't do it at all yesterday.. it was great to have the phone ring.
Hey, I've been lurking these forums for a while but I thought I'd come on to ask a question. I tried asking on sprintmogul.net but they didn't really help.
I've had my mogul for a few months but lately it's been developing a really annoying problem. I'm really not sure where it started exactly so I can't blame any apps in particular. When I receive a call the caller ID / ring and vibrate go off perfectly - the problem happens when I try to answer the call. Generally one of three things happens:
1 - The call connects instantly and just works - this happens pretty rarely, I remember the last time it happened the person calling was also on Sprint, if that makes any difference.
2 - The phone will just sort of hang there for about 10 seconds, caller ID popup still there, the ring stops though. Eventually the popup disappears and I get a missed call notification, as if I never clicked the answer button. This is what usually happens.
3 - The phone hangs like in situation 2, but the call eventually connects. This only happens if I press answer almost immediately after the phone starts to ring.
I'm on winMo 6.1 with the latest radio and am not running any major mods or hacks, just a few reg edits. I'll probably try a hard reset soon but ideas on things to try would be appreciated!
I am seeing this also, on both my own xv6800 and my wife's. It's VERY annoying.
I've just realized that I keep missing calls because it seems to me that the Touch HD takes entirely too long to wake up on an incoming call.
Example:
I called my phone, it rang TWO times before the phone started to wake up, by the time I was able to answer it, it was too late.
Anyway to speed up the waking of this phone on incoming calls. I can't have all these delays. Or is there a way to make it ring LONGER (as a workaround) before going to voicemail?
Does having the phone locked increase the time it takes to wake it up?
Question 2:
It seems like just picking up my phone from my desk answers it. That's no good, sometimes I want to pick it up to look the the caller id but it auto answers upon picking up the phone off my desk. Can this be disabled?

Try using 3rd party apps like 'Advanced Config', 'HD Tweak' and 'SKTools' to tweak to optimise your HD performance.
I know HD Tweak has the option to enable or disable ring delay for incoming calls
I have tweak HD now. So let me ask you, why would anyone want a ring delay in the first place?
I hate how long it takes to answer a call. Sometimes i answer on the first ring and the caller says "what took you so long?".
What's even worse is, if the phone is doing something and someone rings, i can press the answer button all i like but nothing happens...the phone seems to clogged up with other tasks. This may just be the ROM though, i'm about to flash the new Touch of HD rom so i'll see how it goes.
Gat, I'm pretty sure it's a power issue. Windows Mobile is slow and clunky especially on a 528Mhz processor. Can't wait for tegra or snapdragon. I don't think another rom will help you.

Try using Dutty's Xtreme V1.8 ROM, link below. I haven't experienced any delays since I started using this ROM. May be a coincidence, but worth a try!
With Dutty's V1.8 rom it takes half-a-ring before the screen wakes up, and then a whole ring on silent before it makes any sound. So 1 1/2 rings before I know some-one is calling.
Guys, don't. This is a issue and fixed by HTC, there's a official patch for this problem: htc.com/www/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=179&act=sd&cat=all
fixed my equal problems at once!
The delay is caused by the HTC dialer and all the stuff it needs to load on an incomming call.
If it is a serious problem for you, use HD tweak to change the phone dialer back to WM6. This will give you instant ring on incomming call, but you will lose some features provided by the HTC dialer such as volume control during call, bluetooth notification on top bar, video calling and possibly mute on face down.
If you don't want to use HD Tweak the reg key is
HKLM\security\phone\skin_enabled
Option is 0 (disabled) 1 (enabled)
Soft reset to make the changes.

Hi, I tried this from HDTweak but it did not seem to make a difference. The phone still takes about 1.5 rings before it starts to ring itself. I have lost the bluetooth icon.
Hmmm - I think I will just go back to the HTC dialer

bazzxdahtc, I can't find the patch for this issue under your link
This one should work: http://www.htc.com/europe/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=179&act=sd&cat=all
Look for:
- Hot fix for improving the on-screen slider feature for answering calls
and
- Hot fix to enhance response time for HTC Touch HD
These two made my HD work a lot better then before! I used to miss calls often due to the lag in answering incoming calls.

These 2 fixes have nothing to do with the famous 2 ring delay. The response time improvement was to solve the latency when using the keyboard - ie sometimes it would appear to freeze. The second fix is for the slider only.
Suggest you guys do a bit of searching as there are a lot of threads relating to this famous 2 ring delay with wm6. The first incomming call always seems to take a bit longer after the phone has been switched off or soft reset - did you try and see what the delay is several times? Appologies that using the wm6 dialer did not work for you - it certainly does for me and many others.
Just trying to help...
I run stock ROM(1.14.404.3(V2227)NLD)+regular updates/patches and this works on my device, you doubt my experiences?
Have you actually tried these yourself? Or are you just reasoning from your cooked ROM...
Suggest you stay nice to everyone.
No i dont doubt your experience apart from the fact that htc fixes are not specific to the 2 ring delay. It also has nothing to do with the fact im using non stock rom .i applied these tweeks to the standard rom before flashing my device. if you do a search for 2 ring deLay, you will see that this is a common problem. Also other sites such as www.pocketshield.netserver01.com/readme.aspx make reference to this exact problem
I'm only tryin to help, and ive spent a lot of my time investigating this issue.
Just a quick thought.. do you have an MP3 assigned as ringtone? I recently added an MP3 ringtone and suddenly it took a lot longer before the phone started ringing..
Changed it back to one of the standard tones and it was much faster.
I agree about the MP3 issue.
I often see my Touch HD waking up to handle the call 1-2 seconds before I hear the ringtone. As soon as the dialler skin is up (or S2U2 application) then I am able to answer the call without the MP3 ring kicking in.
Before I use S2U2, Pocketshiel and Inesoft programs in the same time..it takes at least 4 seconds to starts ring. but now only S2U2 its only 1 sec.
Guys I'm using 1.19.831 stock ROM, applied ONLY Slider hotfix from HTC, ringing with mp3 file (around 900kb size) and do these tweaks in HDtweak and Advanced Config 3.3:
Incoming ring delay = no;
Battery icon in phone menu = no;
Filesystem cache: enabled
Filesystem cache size: 8 mb;
File system filter chace: 131072 sectors;
Glyph cahce: 64 kb;
The delay is around 1.5 ring BEFORE it start ringing. 1 ring before display answer slider. I'm not 100% sure if all of above settings have any connection with the problem, but with these one --> a whole 1 ring delay is gone away...
Hey guys,
For some reason my hero is causing a lot of problems in terms of answering phone calls. If I stand 10 feet away from the phone, I have full connectivity and if I call my phone from another phone, I get the trackball lighting up on my hero when I've heard the 3rd ring on the phone I'm calling from. If I carry on listening, by about the 6th ring I get my first ring on my hero. This is a very big problem as people give me a call and I used to answer immediately and so no one waits more than 2-3 rings. Is there a fix for this?
Many Thanks
try menu > settings> sounds and display. Turn off the "quiet ring on pickup"
try Cronos rom, your hero will ring immediately as a call's coming
Hey guys,
Thanks so much for your help. I've tried it on chronos and disabled the option for a day and have been asking everyone of my caller about which ring it was (1st, 2nd or 3rd) and the good news is I get the trackball half way through 2nd ring and the ringtone on the 3rd which is a very significant improvement. If it is possible to improve it slightly more then it would be perfect. I dont need it straight on one maybe missing the first ring on the max.
Thanks again!
I've noticed my phone always starts to ring at where I set the volume to and then escalates to be very loud after a few seconds. I didnt see any settings to change this. Is this happening to anybody else?
Is it in your pocket when it does that?
I noticed in the HTC Sense demo video it says if it is in your pocket or purse it will ring loud so you can hear it. I think it has to do with proximity and light sources. If i have it sitting out, it will ring quietly, but it is always loud in my pocket.

Actually yeah. Thats usually when it gets loud. I dont really like that as it gets super loud sometimes. Why wouldnt they have a setting for this?
Any news on this? Because I also find it quite annoying that the ringer is so loud even when I'm sitting in the quiet office...

I have the same issue! It happens on ALL Sense ROM's. If I am running AOSP (CM6 or MIUI) it is not an issue. Are there any ways to disable this setting if it is supposed to do so? Mine is on my belt in a case and when I'm in the office it rings way too loud. If the phone is on my desk it rings as I have the volume set.
Actually I found you can disable the loud ringer in settings really easy
Settings --> Sound --> Pocket mode
There's no way to adjust the volume though,
Apparently the Shift has the same issue as my EVO or as Sprint would call it..."feature".

You would think there was an app out there to override this.

that setting dont apply to shift
Did a complete wipe 2x using Amon Ra Recovery 2.3 and then flashed a stock image file from HBOOT and updated WiMAX, PRI & NV Radio. The issue was not present on the stock ROM. Wiped the stock ROM and flashed Myn's RLS5.....no more issues. Something was corrupt and enabled the sensor to trigger ring loud (when covered or senses low light) as it is designed to do on the Shift. The EVO does not have Pocket Mode in settings. Whatever the cause.....it is now resolved!
I sent a tweet in the direction of @htc about this yesterday, but they haven't answered. Hopefully we get an update that gives us a 2.x release of sense, not this weird "you have some of the features of new sense but not the whole package." The other feature that I know is there is the one where you can flip the phone over to silence the ring, and in fact, BOTH features are undocumented - the user manual for the shift doesn't mention declining a call by flipping the phone OR the word pocket except in warnings about where not to keep it.
I don't have any hope of a satisfactory answer, though, because in an earlier answer to someone about bugs, they said to submit something at htc.com/support and make sure to mark it a bug report - you can't do that anywhere on the email form and the other two options for support aren't things you "submit." The two times I've contacted them by email were also tremendous disappointments, so... there you go.
Tried to second your post on HTC's support forum but their forum software is misconfigured and my email server is rejecting their mail because it is not a fully-qualified hostname. Meh. Like you, I don't hold out enough hope of a fix to bother with the registration process.
You mentioned flip to silence, but there is actually a setting on the Evo Shift 4G to silence the ringtone when the phone is moved. It's under settings - sounds, and it is "quiet ring on pickup". Since the action of flipping the phone involves moving it, I wonder if you are seeing that setting working when you flip your phone over. My phone stops ringing (if it's not in a pocket) when I pick it up off the table. It doesn't decline the call, it just stops the ringer.
Edit: eh, I made an allowance on my mail server so HTC's misconfigured SMTP server could send my activation message and let me register.
By the way, I posted a workaround on Android Central that works for the way I use the phone. I created a silent ringtone. Then I set the phone to vibrate as well. So in my pocket I feel/hear the vibration but I don't get the ridiculously-loud rings. But I can hear my notifications at normal volume. When the phone is on my desk, the vibration and screen lighting up are enough of an alert for me. Obviously this won't work if you ever keep the phone in a bag or somewhere that you can't hear or feel the vibration, but it works for me as a pocket user.
Three ticks up from silenced on the volume rocker:
Picking the phone up off my desk quiets the ring, flipping it silences the ring. I wonder if turning off quiet ring on pickup will turn off flip to silence... might as well try it.
aaand no it doesn't. Pickup didn't quiet (per the setting now being off) but flip still did silence the ring.
Interesting note: flip-to-silence is actually a silencer; it doesn't decline the call immediately.
http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/112/t/9935.aspx
For anyone else that wants to weigh in on the issue on the official HTC support forum. Maybe they won't ignore us too hard.

Ok, makes sense - since I use a silent ringtone, the "quiet" and "silent" are the same to me, LOL. But yes, it doesn't decline the call.
I actually liked the Touch Pro2 where flipping during a call would turn on the speakerphone. Why can't they keep good features like that instead of forcing this new stuff down our throats with no option to turn it off.
Bump/Update: After two tweets on the issue and an entire week of the post I made sitting on the HTC forums, I have had enough of being ignored and went to the email support option.
I'm not resetting my phone again, so I instead borrowed the New Issue text from Google Code project pages and sent steps to duplicate.
Anybody else that might have this problem is welcome to weigh in; I gave links to this thread and the one over on Android Central in my forum post on HTC, which is linked in the support message I sent.
Another update: Today I received my response; I don't have to reset my phone (yet) and my concern is being escalated to whatever the next level of CS is called.
They say escalated department is first-come, first-served, so it may be a while before I know more.
The problem is that HTC sees this as a feature, not a bug. They market this as a way to hear your phone when it's in a bag. While it makes perfect sense to us end-users to have an option to turn this off, from a lab testing standpoint it's not a priority because the function works as designed. If HTC had really thought this through, they should realize that there are some things phones should never do, and ringing at maximum volume unless specifically directed by the user is one of them.
The funny thing is that I'd like almost the exact opposite behavior. I'd prefer the phone to ring (quietly) on my desk, and automatically switch to vibrate when it's in my pocket (as determined by the prox sensor). But people who carry their phones in bags or purses wouldn't benefit from this option. Everybody's needs are different; HTC just determined what they think is the most common scenario and coded Sense that way. I have to give them credit for thinking up the idea, but since it doesn't work for everyone it should be more flexible.
Thanks for taking the time to bring this to their attention. It may well be that a couple of generations of phones from now we'll start seeing more options in these settings, which would be fantastic.
Update: HTC has been calling me at work, once yesterday once today. I have not been at work this week but will be in tomorrow; they gave me a number to call if I wanted to get in touch with them sooner. I will be calling them back as soon as I'm done with my planned tasks tomorrow (assuming they haven't called me first).
Here's hoping news about when we get an update that stops this nonsense comes swiftly!
