So thanks to a fat tax check clearing my bank, I can afford sinking what I consider far too much money for a phone--specifically the N1(AT&T.)
But I can't sit back and see exactly how badly the next 3 versions of android phone AT&T will release. Service wise, it's a good company, but in terms of products offered, they're in too deep with contractual obligations to get a smartphone that does what most people want. Updates are virtually non-existent unless it's an iPhone. So the more I think of it, the more likely I'll be happier doing the N1 unsub'd.
I've read a few reports on battery life and it seems that it's about the same as the iphone in terms of a day's lifespan or less. (the wife has one--traitor. ) Radio, the mileage varies based on location--normal. Rooting kills the warranty, but not all that needed--yet. None of this stuff is sending up any red flags to not pour more money into the Chocolate Factory and their uber-phone.
Anyone pick up the desktop/nightstand cradle and what do you think of it? Heard there's a car version as well that snaps into maps when the N1 is docked. Is that available, think it's worth it, where do you get it?
Edit: Oh, yeah--engraved case for free (but forfeit money back refund) What to put on that - "Give me Android AND give me FREEDOM!" lol Prob just leave that well enough alone though. (Not all that narcissistic)

This is hands down the best phone I have ever owned. What's not to love about it?
Apps you want, features you want, and if it's missing anything you do want, root it and make it do whatever you want to. Google Navigation is awesome as well. It has completely replaced TomTom for me.

Battery life is on par with every other smart phone I've owned (3x HTC windows mobile handsets).
I rooted my T-Mo N1, but haven't rooted my AT&T N1. The benefits really didn't warrant voiding the warranty for me (especially as you can't get insurance on the device on AT&T - I had insurance with T-Mo). I've used PDANet with Windows mobile and had no problem purchasing the Android version (although there is a free version that doesn't do HTTPS) for use to tether when I need it (infrequently when traveling).
I do have the desktop dock and like it quite a bit. It's nice not to have to plug/unplug the USB constantly - the drop in is quite convenient. It works well as a nightstand also.
The car dock is not out yet from Google.
I am happier with this phone than any other phone I've owned. Not being stuck behind a manufacturer modification (MotoBLUR or Sense) will also mean that updates shouldn't get stalled the way they do for other devices.
Go for it...you will be in heaven!
Ok, so patience ran out. I clicked the button. For S&G's I picked up the cradle for the $45 extra after all I already use my current phone as an alarm clock so might as well.
As for the car dock, it's supposedly going to be released soon, but not currently out yet. Future purchase I suppose.
Anyone want to but a pair of Epix's? (my old one and the wifes and both just had the crappy touch screen replaced over the last couple of days.)

Sell it and that way the $529 is much easier to think about.
I sold my G1 so my N1 was effectively only $400
Oh, of course the sale of my old POS Epix will go towards the cost of one of these. But the real question is, do I offload now or wait a couple weeks (or months at this rate) for the official WM6.5 update? Wife's is stock standard while I already have Trashcan's 6.5 installed and both will most likely hit fleabay.

I called Google customer service and they told me that the N1 is searching for the strongest signal whereas the G1 is always searching for 3G,whatever....I just wanted a good phone,that's all.I was even losing signal in my bedroom,my bed is by the windows and the freaking phone was going from EDGE to 3G to no signal all the time.
I have seen a lot of comments and videos of people with the same issues.I am sure you will enjoy it the phone,it is beautiful and fast,but I did not have much luck.

No one wants a WM phone, and even fewer people will in a few months from now. It's a completely dead OS, with Microsoft already openly committed Windows Phone 7. You better sell as fast as you possibly can.

You live in a low T-Mobile coverage area. You were probably also wrapping your hand around the bottom of the phone, which would kill the signal completely in such a low coverage area.

Could be,but this is the first time I come across this regardless of the OS or brand,no signal in my bedroom and the signal fluctuation.
The way I grab and hold the phone....well like anybody does,it is a phone there is no much to explain on how to hold it,to me this phone has been a little bit of a Google's failure,a phone is a phone...communication first,then the cool features.
After the Nexus One I bought a HTC HD2,like you said WinMo is dead I totally agree,I had it for 2 days,there are certain things that Microsoft does not do very well yet,after so many years with their freaking windows mobile it is incredible,plus sometimes you (still) kinda need the stylus and the OS still has those windows 98 looking menus and windows.
So I returned it and got the new mytouch,which is not the best,but after my last experience I think I am going to wait a year and a half until I get a cool device,specially since anything we buy these days is a battery killer.

Its my 5th days using the Vibrant and I am still within 14 days return window. Number of issues keep me thinking just return the device for full refund. I have been using my jailbreak/unlock iphone 3g for years and fine. Pros and Cons against using the iphone 3G.
Cons.
1. GPS/Compass does not work most the time regardless of the few fixes I tried. I need to use GPS often and iphone GPS never had single issue. I can live without compass.
2. No skype, I am a regular skype user and need to use the app. I know there is a skype app out there kinda sort of works. But I need something official.
3. Battery life seems only last less than a day and charge to full takes longer time compare to iphone.
4. I am not a gamer but iphone games seem much more better.
Pros.
1. I get nice 3G speed at home and no longer need to WiFi to home network.
2. I only paid $150 after rebate when I am only 16 months into the contact.
3. Its a lot faster than the iphone 3G, data faster, processor faster. No lags so far.
4. Barnacle WiFi on 3G is nice although iphone have MyWi but I never could get 3G speed. Just hope the MTU issue will fix soon rather than keep twisting the client MTU.
If I return this phone, then I can try T-Mobile's first HSPA+ Phone... whatever phone that is... hhmmm.... what should I do?

Edit: Nevermind, I didn't know it only works on Verizon phones.
I love mine. Do what you need. .. nothing beats this IMO. GPS work's great for me and its just awesome. Try nova for games, also asphalt 5, modern sandstorm, hero of Sparta. Etc.
Don't know what to tell ya, I love mine.

That's a total downgrade.
What area are you in that's giving you the GPS problems? Maybe you should try to find someone in your area with the Vibrant and see if they are having issues too...
The funny thing is, it's working just fine for a lot of us....
But dang really? 3G is like minor league compared to the Vibrant. Trust me I know, I've had the 2G since day one, 3G's (2 of them) and the 3GS (2 of them)...never again will I submit myself to communist apple phones. Only macbook pros
I was in the same boat as you and found out I had a defective device. I exchanged mine on the 13th day to give it one more try, the new phone is performs flawlessly, except for the gps would take a little longer to find a satellite until I performed the second fix now its fine. I don't use Gps that much so its not a big deal for me. The battery will be the same as all high end smartphones especially with that awesome screen. I usually unplug the phone at 7:30am and it last until 11pm at night, mind you I make a few calls mostly its games and streaming podcasts and heavy web usage. As for the games there are many out there but not available on the market for some reason. If you decide to keep the phone pm me and I will tell where to get them.
How much do you trust Samsung?
For me, the risk boils down to whether to trust Samsung to fix the GPS. At least there now has been quasi-official (is a tweet official?) acknowledgement from the manufacturer that there is problem and it is being worked on. The conventional wisdom is that there will be a firmware update, and that it will cure the problem. But there are no official promises of a complete solution.
I am not yet convinced that the GPS problem is entirely a firmware problem, and Samsung has not said so officially. If the underlying problem is unreliable output from the new combo GPS chip, then a firmware update may not fix the root cause, but only mitigate the symptoms.
It does not seem likely that we will know the answer to that before the 14 days run out for the OP (and for me.) One option is to return the phone for a refund, then buy another later if there is good news on a real GPS fix. I, too, got a pretty decent deal, in my case on a T-Mobile upgrade from a G1. I might not get such a good deal later on a repurchase, but the marginal upfront cost should not be the determining factor. This is a two-year commitment, and I would hate to be stuck with a defective GPS on this high-end device.

Well articulated and way of putting that across and I would have to agree. Samsung went fairly all out on all the specs on this phone (some argue they could have made the case metal a la iPhone but the lightness is amazing in my eyes, less weight equals less impact when I drop it) and it would be quite a shame to see the actual gps hardware to be defective. I doubt that it is truly, and would be very surprised if it is not addressed within the first ota firmware update. Truly the only way is up from here on this phone.

After a full week with the Focus and an sd card no problems everything integrated and working to perfection. Speed is awesome and I love it, but I am having a little remorse. I have seen the specs on new phones coming out with the dual core tegras and front facing cameras am I wrong to doubt sigining a renewal with att for the focus? I am really on the edge because my TP2 was functioning fine and I was holding off for wp7 really but like I said I want my phone to have a fair amount of options front facing camera is probably coming soon, and I would like that for family and such, and really not missing the keyboard too much due to the awesome virtual keyboard (as good as the iphones). Anyone else feeling like this or have any suggestions or a roadmap of devices. I have until the 11 of december to return the device I have it armored up so it still looks new on return if the remorse grows. Thanks for your thoughts and ideas
I know how you feel, but, with this kind of mindset you would never buy any electronic equipment ever again because there is always something better just around the corner.
I love my focus - I am very impressed with the device, more so than I thought I would be.

I work for a company that is a direct partner with intel so we get roadmap stuff like 3-6yrs down the road kind of hampers my building for myself until I am able to test. I guess that is what hurts me in PC world I get my hands on new stuff and get an idea, I miss my cellular job so much now. Just that like I said just a couple of options I would like (basically two cameras and maybe a keyboard), I was told by a rep that copy/paste should be released this week as well (don't know how true that is). Trust me I love my focus as well and so do my kids and netflix I think I have a resource I haven't used at Samsung and will see if anything new he knows of.
I have no buyer's remorse whatsoever with this phone. As you can see from my sig, I have owned many of the top phones (at their release) and I can say that I am the least wary of this purchase. As previously said, it's pretty futile to keep worrying about what's coming up next because even if you buy that, it will be outdated by the time you get it to your house. There's always something better coming.
As for a front facing camera, if it's a big selling point for you, then yeah, you may want to look into an iPhone 4 or the Nexus S when it drops(assuming you're stuck on AT&T and that the Nexus S comes to AT&T in some form). Personally, I feel like the Focus has surpassed many of my expectations and I can comfortably call it my phone/OS of choice now. I originally bought it on a whim on release just to see what WP7 was all about and I love the OS now, despite it's flaws which I expect to be fixed.

With AT&T.. if you "want" to "cancel" service.. they will offer you options..an option..could be a new [email protected] new subscriber price...this is available every 8 months... this is a way to enjoy new hardware...which we all love...

I've never gotten such an offer, even when I attempted to break contract about a year in just to see what I could settle with them. 3 people on my family plan have iPhone 4s and love them, plus my company gives us a pretty decent discount on our monthly rates (although it's still sky high with 6 data plans). Every time I've been tempted to just pay out the rest of my contract and go to Verizon, who has fantastic service in my area, something nags me back from doing it like the ability to use SIMs in other countries since there seems to be more worldphone options on AT&T or a new phone comes out that I want to play with (iPhone4, and now the Focus...)
In short, damn you AT&T
a little bit of persuading and you can get ATT to give you what you want.
I got the focus for free. I was using the captivate before that and am now deciding which one I like better

Ditto! except for the deciding part, I already figured that one out quick. I still had to pay a $35 restocking fee when I returned the Captivate, though. Despite telling them the GPS was completely f'd and I need it functioning for how I use the phone, which was advertised as having...GPS...
Hi, I have a problem with the G2.
I have in my possession 2 of them, and they appear to be freaking out, the trackball is malfunctioning on both phone, at least that's my 1st impression.
I'd like to know if one of you faces the same issue and/or if there ways to get it fixed.
so to give you an example, when I use the phone it will push randomly all directions (up, down, right, left) and make it a pain in the ass to use the phone.
or when writing commands in the terminal emulator, the phone will randomly write: ^[[A^[[C^[[ ... etc etc and on and on.
do you guys think this is a hardware issue? cause it started 2 days ago, and I bought these 2 phones at the same time basically when the phone was released. (so I guess they are part of the 1st shipments and maybe faulty???)

Since they're optical, there was probably some sort of lighting that was interfering with it. Happens to me from time to time...

Happened randomly to me too when I got this flawled phone and had to exchanged it(luckily was within first two weeks of tmobile phone trial). Now I'm dealing with flimsy structure, this craptastic Z slide feels like two magnets with same polarities facing each other it just won't shut anymore! I'm gonna send it in to htc and ebay this p.o.s.
No offense to htc and htc fan boys but I have learned my lesson, its sad tho because this is my first ever smart phone. I was previously on a samsung highlight with no internet or even email because I was a broke a$$ collage student freezing my fingers off with roommates in the winter saving money on utilities. Not even a month after I renew my contract the nexus s comes out which I wouldn't mind right now if only tmobile mandated their manufacters announce their phones so I can plan my purchase like i had been when I almost got a nexus one.
Carriers don't seam to care whose phone you have--but if it sucks you're options most certainly include leaving the carrier altogether to try something new...at least the iphone band wagon includes most if not all your friends or friends to-be whome you might like to game with. Now I'm ready to swing back the other way in the spectrum and go for iphone when it goes out on verizon. Who cares tho right? We're only the exclusive bunch that are stuck with g2 in a g2 only section of xda where no one will hear our plight? Wrong--we're a young generation with money in our hands. You're a fool if you think the iPhone has no flaws ir defective units. My wife's 3GS gets no GPS reception (turns out this is a fairly common issue), a friend had the radio crap out (was dropping all calls and data connections) and had to exchange, and another friend is having major battery issues (and of course the battery is not meant to be accessed on the iPhone). That's about a 30% failure rate in iPhone owners amongst my close friends.

I'm sorry you had a hard time with your iphone, I myself think at&t fail hard so I really don't know where you thought I was saying iphone is the best, but get with the program you're comparing iphone 3gs with my supposed iphone4 contender the g2... maybe if you said something about the iphone4 I would care.
As I stated before at least iphone has a huge customer base to be among other things, scared of. on the other hand we get pissed on by android os phone manufacturers in the horse races playing catchup with apple to try and get consumers using droid phones. So I get duped into buying this g2 and nobody gives a damn. Btw this phone went down in price very quickly which goes to say it sucks.

You misread, I don't own, and will never own an iPhone.
My friends iPhone radio issue has nothing to do with ATT coverage, which you are again completely misreading (and ATT is actually excellent in my market). Her iPhone worked fine for almost a year, then either the radio software or hardware failed. The issue was completely repeatable at the ATT store. The ATT rep then put her SIM in a different iPhone, and it worked fine. So it was obviously a issue with the phone, not the network.
If you think the iPhone 4 is so much more awesome than the 3GS, you must have slept though Apple's antenna design fail. You should also research the instances of cracks in the supposedly unbreakable (or at least very difficult to break) Gorilla Glass. And the iPhone 4 also has proximity sensor issues.

OP, have you called TMo customer service and asked about the problems your having? I've had nothing but excellent service from them with one small exception that was resolved very quickly. If your still in the buyers remorse (14 day) period they will send out new in the box units or allow you to exchange the phones for something different. If not, they still have a one year warranty, so you can get them replaced....
Hope you get things settled soon....

yeah I think when I get back home next week I will try that, the thing is I don't know how long it might take for them to repair the phones
if they do repair them I will try the milestone II instead.

If your out of the remorse period, they will send out replacement units, bare bones so to speak (no battery, SD card, back cover or charger)... In my case they sent them out priority and I had the replacement in three days. You don't return the defective units until the replacement arrives, so no down time.

T-Mobile will send you replacements before you send the defective units back. Basically they send you replacements, then you send the old ones back in the same box(es) they delivered them in.
Hope you get your issue resolved....

Since the battery is built into the phone and cannot be removed, I'd say that counts as a "hardware issue".
Which isn't really the point here.
The point is that faulty devices will always exist, and the more complex the device, the higher the number of faults.
Yes, the iPhone wouldn't have had the issues that you had.
Because the iPhone doesn't have a slide-out keyboard.

Fact is, smartphones are complex. Manufacturing faults are inevitable. You just got unlucky. Twice. How unlucky? Well, so unlucky that I've never heard of a single other case of this "inverse-polarity-like sliding mechanism".

I've never sold a phone on ebay before so I have a few questions.
1. I got this phone on a subsidized price and it seems like I can sell it for more. I have a different line on the family plan that is eligible for an upgrade. If I were to transfer that upgrade to myself and get a new phone, Verizon shouldn't penalize me for deactivating and selling the phone, right?
2. When the phone sells, I suppose everything goes, including the SIM card?
3. What is a good popular replacement android that has the same or greater processing power and battery life comparable to using an extended battery on this phone. (Correct me if I am wrong but it seems that data is 30 bucks for either 3g or 4g phones, right?)

Why would you sell this phone, now that Gingerbread has just come out and its the only real option over a BlackBerry.
Anyways, I imported my Droid Pro and bought if off a private seller like you on Ebay. You will have the best chances to sell it if ...
1) Get the Unlock code of Verizon: Tell them you are travelling overseas for a long time and would like to use it with a foreign SIM. And make that a central point in your item description.
2) Make it available to foreign customers: Unlike as in the US, in Europe, people are crazy for this phone. Foreign customers may give you more headache, but for Europeans, a strong Euro means everything bought from the US is really cheap. That means you can get your premium return, while the buyer is still happy.
3) Take loads of pictures of the phone: Be honest with the customer, how long have u been using it, any scratches etc .
4) Be open to offers: The way I got my phone was get in touch with a seller who didn't have any other bids yet and was willing to do a buy-it-now.
I guess that should be the best way to get your phone sold, but really, think about it.. its an amazing phone and is getting a lot of love at the moment from Motorola and Verizon.

I was only thinking of getting another android phone for a few reasons.
I am not too pleased with how small the Droid Pro community is compared to many other more popular android phones. I don't really wish to mess around with Roms just yet but I would like the opportunity to have some different flavors available. That said, I have not yet tried the official gingerbread.
I am not too pleased with the small screen. I honestly thought that it was big enough when I bought it, but now I think I might be better off with something a little bigger especially seeing that certain apps aren't quite geared toward the resolution the phone is running in e.g. DialerOne.
Finally, I thought that I could just get on a cycle of selling my subsidized phones and essentially upgrading for free so that I could potentially always have a "next-gen" phone without paying anything. Of course, that would mean that I should find a phone as good or better than this.

As a Droid Incredible owner trolling in this forum, I have attempted to make people talk a lil more about the phone. This is a very good phone aimed more for business minded people (there are regular users of it too). Those people that have it were only waiting for Gingerbread to arrive, which it has. Don't be so down on the phone.
I have tried contacting a couple of the original Fission Rom guys to see what can be done for you guys as far as this new update goes. May not be promising but keep your fingers crossed.
Yeah I am also thinking of selling this Motorola phone for a few reasons.
1. The screen is too small, the resolution is too low and it has too much bezel / is recessed too much inside the phone.
2. There is no hardware camera button to take a picture on a phone with more keys than any of the other phones you produce. I mean come the **** on Motorola, you want to reach bankruptcy again I see.
3. Battery life is very poor if you're using the standard battery.

Battery life with the extended battery is pretty piss poor too. The gingerbread update did help a bit though...the gingerbread update did fix a bunch of bugs that killed the pro.
The lack of hardware buttons is a huge negative as well. As for the screen, imo you can't really tell until you set your phone next to a droid or something with much higher pixel density. Other than that, if you compare the screen with a blackberry, it's much bigger and more usable.
Not sure if anyone is interested but the nexus s for at&t, sprint, and t mobile is free today only on 2 year contract at best buy.

Also for upgrades, I was really tempted but I rather wait for Nexus 3 or what ever Nokia and MS brings to the table.

Problem I have, is that a new contract costs 20 bucks more a month for the same plan.over 2 years, that's 480 bucks.its only worth it if I can keep the same plan.

Heh, this is why I haven't signed a new contract in years. They'd force me to a plan that is $20-$25 a month more expensive (plus they don't even have unlimited data any more. I'm grandfathered in on unlimited). Over the course of a contract, it's cheaper to buy a phone out right then pay the high contract price and get even a completely "free" phone.

Tell you the truth I think the N1 was a flop for Google they wanted to move units like the Iphone and have their own Web store that idea went down the drain. they didn't know how to market the Nexus One to normal consumers after few months they wanted to sell it on mobile stores for people to see and test that never happen. finally it slowly faded away to just be a developer phone, I think this time Google wanted a company like best buy to do the whole process and have exclusivity if Goole would of thought of this we would still see the Nexus One being sold for free etc etc.

I think you're exactly right. The experiment that was the N1 was, in essence, a failure. Google may be big, but they don't have the computing experience Apple has. Apple users were already wishing for an iPhone product; but no one was hoping Google would release a phone. But this is what makes the N1 such a gem: it's been a completely underground developer's dream. The NS found itself in an odd place and was really to the N1 as the iPhone 3GS was to the 3G.

I'll get asked what phone I have and tell them a Nexus One. The response is always, with out fail, "A Nexus what?"
I kind of like having a phone no one else really has though.

Difference between google and apple is google is web base company people don't think of them as a software company for the same reason people had trouble knowing about android until verizon put the Droid stamp on. Googles marketing is too geeky for normal consumers 1ghz what? 2 speakers for noise cancellation what? Apples marketing twice as fast as your 3gs, Better graphics for Gaming, our top of the line speaker for calls period.

Yup, the math never works out. If you can actually keep a phone for two years and buy it without a contract you usually break even before two years, at least I did with my N1 although I bought a pair of those off Craig's List for $350 each.

When I tell them that I have a Nexus One, they ask "Is that a droid phone?" I have to admit that most of the common folk associate the Motorola Droid commercials with Android phones. Those were pretty cool I must admit, but I'd never go with an NS over my N1. May be the TMo Hercules when it comes out, but nothing else has been enough of a jump in technology to make me move.

I am not sure I completely agree with this. To me, the NS was more of a sidestep than an actual upgrade over the N1. Sure, it had a bit faster processor and more flash, but there was no micro-sdcard slot and no notification led. I think they traded off some important features and put different ones in (and NFC implementation isn't widespread enough for me to consider it a feature just yet). Both phones are great, but I think I would still prefer my N1 over an NS.
And while the original thought behind the N1 and the webstore might've fallen short of what google expected, the N1 itself was considered a success by google (although the webstore was considered a failure). Why? Because they wanted to present to the world what phones could be capable of. 1GHz processors, 512MB of RAM... Essentially, they wanted to kickstart the "superphone" craze, which as you can now tell, was extremely successful. I mean, N1s are over 18 months old, but they still hold their own. Sure there are fancier and faster phones out there, but in a fast-paced enviornment like smartphones, it is pretty impressive that people are still considering buying an 18+ month old phone (and are extremely happy when they get it).
I do think the NS was an attempt at kickstarting the NFC (and to make the phone more retail/consumer friendly vs more of a niche/developer phone that the N1 was). I am hoping the N3 will be another push for new hardware and that it will be a true upgrade (in every sense - I am really hoping for another cardock and trackball) instead of a partial upgrade in some areas, but downgrades in others...

I own both the NS & N1 and I use the NS much more than the N1 for 2 reasons:
1) NS has a much brighter, larger, responsive screen
2) NS has more storage space (I'm aware of simple2ext)
As far as NFC is concerned, sure it's not widespread but that doesn't matter. You can very cheaply purchase your own NFC tags and use this app NFC Task Launcher developed by an XDA member to basically do any function (it has Tasker support). I have a tag setup on my work desk that turns the phones screen off when I set it down. People put them in their cars as well. Very, very handy.
Not having notification LED sucks terribly though and I hope the iPhone 5 has one so Android OEMs will start adding them again..
It all depends on the user. Depending on what you use the phone for they could either be very similar or it could be considered a huge improvement.
I totally agree. Each user is different. My thoughts were my personal opinion. For me, it is necessary to have an sdcard slot so I can have my 32GB micro-sdcard installed (since mine is consistently sitting at 2GB or less freespace). I just wish that the NS was a total upgrade over the N1 rather than a partial one. I am really hoping that the N3 will quench my thirst for a new Nexus device.
I didn't realize all the stuff you can do with the NFC tags, so I will definitely be looking forward to that in a future phone.

That is an AWESOME use of NFC. I always thought it was just a gimmick, but the ability to place tags in places like that is pretty cool. Place one in the bosses office so that tasker puts your phone on vibrate when you walk in!
