I apologize with administrators of this site if this topic was
already discussed and if I am using the forum to address a
claim on this phone model. I hope someone form HTC would be
reading this forum so please let me also write this message to them.
Dear HTC,
mostl of us already know, HD2 screen is extremely fragile,
made of tiny glass, and we all have to keep care with it.
I did, I read what happened to other users before of me,
and I always was careful in handling it. Almost I thought it up to
few weeks ago.
Accidents are non predictable and it happened to me that HD2 has fallen from the bed down on the parquet and broke its screen in a hundreds of pieces. As for the other the phone was still working but unusable.
My first though was it is my fault, I had to be more careful, but after a while a really do not understand why a phone should be so fragile. It was really the first fall of the phone and the height was really short (about 30cm)
Why your phone should not have to pass at least a 30cm fall test.
Probably this should have been a condition to prevent selling phones to unacquainted customers. But this is not the case for HD2.
But the incredible thing had still to come, after checking the cost for replacement parts on the web (from 25 to 50 euros) I send the phone to HTC repair and now it is coming back with a bill of 220 Euro.
I have to say that this policy is regrettable, the cost for the repair is more than 1/3 of the cost of the whole device, and about 10 times the cost of
the replacement, event if the cause of rupture is not to be fully charged to the responsibility of the customer.
Unfortunately I had a responsibility on this phone against my company and I had to pay the repair at any cost, but for no reason I should have done it if I was the proprietary of the phone.
I had tenths of mobiles before, and really this is the only one who broke at its first fall.
I am writing this message not only to claim about this unfair repair policy that is demonstrated by the overcharge applied from the assistance, but also to warn all those users like me that use this phone as a means of work and choose their phones on the technical specifications and rely to the quality of the producer.
I am surprised from HTC since I already had three mode HTC devices before of this, and neither experienced this fragility in their previous models. But, this was not the case for HD2. Its robustness do not respect even a poor standard.
Finally I wish to warn other forum users about the cost actually applied for repair.
Best Regards
C.Alberto
I'm sorry that your screen broke and the repair was so expensive , but from first hand experience I can tell you the phone isn't as fragile as you describe it.A week back a friend of mine was playing ShootMe(game where you use accelerometer to simulate different guns) and the phone slipped off his hand(around 1m height) and slided for around half a meter on a parquet floor.I rushed to pick it up , ready to shed some manly tears for my 1 week old phone , but when I picked it up there was nothing except some dust(I had invisible shield so that probably saved it from scratching).Needless to say after that incident I got a pouch .Anyway , I'm not saying it is not fragile , it is ,just not to the extend you are describing or maybe I was lucky?
I can't imagine an HD2 suffering any damage falling 30cm onto a wood floor. I dropped mine recently over a meter onto the pavement, resulting in only small marks in the plastic.
Depends
I guess it strongly depends on the angle of impact with the floor, it it goes down with the back then could be ok, but if, such as in my case it impact from one edge, it does not match the height, the display will break.
I can clearly see on my display the the point of impact along the edge from where the break started, and I repeat in that case it was only 30 cm high.
I guess you have been really lucky in your episode, since mine was the first fall first break actually I experienced 100% fragility.
I had read alot of similar happenings before thinking I was alone and decide to write.
sending it back
... and actually I am seriuosly thinking to send it back, I have a work always on the go, and this is a risk too high in case of continuous travels.
Insurance
I bought mine unlocked, paid alot. Ins. was 85.00 for 2 yrs against water, screen, pretty much everything. I have dropped mine twice from 1m,no damage. I do have it in piel frama Imagnum case. Both times it landed on corner. Sorry for your lose,,,Quig
In Portugal I Payed Last week 167€ for Screen and Lcd repair...
Cumps,
Fiwi
Last night the same thing happened like it happened to OP, my hd2 felt from my bed into the wooden floor. I was ready to cry after it felt but for my surprise it wasn't even scratched at all. While taking it out of under bed it got some little scratches on the screen protector but no scratch on the phone itself or any other visible damage.
I will agree with OP here, it all depends on the angle of the fall.
Mine fallen from approx 1.5m onto concrete tiles. Case in the corner got scratched, but the display/touchscreen survived it. It was 30cms only indeed? Amazing

Next time I will better do to send it in Portugal for repair At least it is 50Euros less
Did you had also the LCD repaired for that price?
The price for reparation of mine was only the capacitive Glass cover
Well Guys the day has come where I have cracked my first phone. I was working and it fell a good 4ft onto a concrete floor face first. I have dropped my phone plenty of times but I guess this one finally did it. Thankfully it's not that bad as I just have a technicolor rainbow on the top of my screen. I can deal with it until I get a new screen. But just wanted to rant!
Damnnnnnnnnnn, sorrry to hear that bro!! Have you already ordered a new screen?
A couple of weeks ago I wanted to sell my Streak and took the pics, created the add( I know.. bad decision) but then it made a sudden unpredicted drop from around 50 cm (1.5 ft?) out of my pocket onto the tiles at home.
Nothing seemed to be wrong with it but after two hours or so the camera connection broke apparently as it wouldn't connect with the camera. Whenever I activated the camera app, the device would get very hot at the front and back cam region, the battery suddenly freaked out. If I made a phone call it would drop from 100 to 1% in less than a minute but if it was used as a mp3 player I could listen for at least a couple of hours. Charging went extremely fast, but discharging as well.
After a couple of days I sent it back to store as a RMA and just received the conformation today that it will be delivered tomorrow!
Anyways, my parents and friends laughed at me and said the Streak committed suiside ......The lesson I learned in my case: 1. Don't ever sell the Streak, 2. Don't drop it and you will be a happy man for a looooooong time.
That sucks man. I've been lucky enough to not have dropped mine yet.
However, I've received a line of faulty ones. Dell is shipping out my 5th replacement device!
I've given up on screen protectors. I keep having to ship them back to Dell. F it. I'll trust Gorilla Glass to be tough enough.

just use those from Xtreme guards, they really great and you can reapply them! There are also a couple of alternatives, they use the same material but I find Xtreme guards to be the cheapest with great quality.
I've never used Guards on any of my phones. I will not ever unless I like the way it looks. Anyway. I am going to go ahead and order a new LCD and possibly try repairing it myself but I am very iffy about that.
been there. Actually got Dell to replace my Streak when it happened, but it took over a month! But I've been careful since.
I broke my Phone on the front about a month ago ... it was in my Jeans back pocket and I bent to pick up my kid from floor and went on to squat posture ... and heard a feeble cracking sound! I knew instantly, it happened. When removed, to my bad, it was found the same. Ran to the Dell Service next day morning (I am in Hyderabad, India now) and bought my Dell Streak when I was in US. I had to pay around 250$ (including $60 US to India warranty transfer) and they instantly replaced the device (except my old battery).
Hello All,
Took my S3 out of my pocket today and noticed that the screen has a crack all the way from the bottom left corner to the home button (picture attached). I have had my S3 for about two weeks now and am really disappointed with the quality of the product. I always keep the screen facing inwards towards my leg so am really at a loss as to how I managed to crack it.
I bought the phone from Amazon UK and am wondering if I can get a replacement stating manufacturing defect or should I contact Samsung directly.
Any ideas?
TIA.
Ouch feel sorry for you mate. No insurance I take it?
If you can prove it was a defect you have a good leg to stand on. They might realize if they can't find and marks or impact points. Good Luck as you will need it..

You can always try to get it replaced but I think the chance will be small they will replace the phone as it is cracked, they will definitely blame it on force from outside. Are there more phones cracked this easily as you described it that you are aware of?
Sorry to hear you cracked the screen, imo the phone is quite strong, mine dropped by accident from three feet high without any damage. But that doesn't get you anywhere, I know that...
Now I look at the cracked screen it looks like something pressured the left side of the home button strongly.

Sometimes this just seems to happen. I've only seen one other person who had this happen with a Galaxy S3, but I've heard stories like this since the Nexus One came out.
I'm guessing some devices just happen to have structural integrity problems with their glass, I don't really know if much can be done because of how extremely rare it is.
You should have got insurance or been.more careful. It is **** when this happens buddy.
They (Samsung/amazon) will not exchange it for any reason as it will be seen as damaged caused in your possession and that when it was sold there were no cracks or anything.
I work for a phone retailer and deal with this kind of thing at least once a week.
Try protect your bubble or something like that , then make a claim.
Hope you get it sorted.

It looks like the glass underneath the home button is not very thick only a few mm, and looks to be the weakest point on the phone screen, see how it`s broken on the bottom left corner of the home button.
John.
Nope, no insurance unfortunately. Forgot to mention that the phone was protected by a gel tpu case...
Really bummed!
wow that sucks... feel your pain.. every time I read a post like this, the more afraid I am of getting this phone..
I've sent stuff back to Amazon within the 30 days they have for returns that were broken. Just stated return under poor quality, faulty and they just asked if I wanted another or a refund. Not £500, under a ton. But they are pretty good with returns.
Don't bother with Samsung.. they are a waste of time. Contact Amazon.
Funny thing is I`ve been not only reading, but also hearing lots of reports about the fragility of the S3. Bad thing is that I got mine last week. I am being extra careful with it.
I wonder if Samsung realizes they have delivered such a fragile product.
I've also heard that. But here's some sort of consolidation I have had 4 people come back into my shop with cracked screens on their HTC one x's, some claiming it just happened , others that they pressed hard on the screen etc. (Regardless how it happened the screen is still cracked)
Some had insurance (so only insurance excess to pay) and the others who didn't, HTC only charged them 79.99 for either a replacement phone or the screen fixed. ( which in my experience in a new £500 expensive smart phone is amazing)
So there you have it. **** happens. No phone is perfect and mistakes happen.

Thank you all for your replies.
I contacted Amazon today and they were quite open to doing a refund/replacement. I went for a replacement as I am quite happy with the phone overall. Glad I bought the phone through Amazon.
Will most definitely get insurance on this puppy second time around!
Great news man. You are one lucky fella.

the screen is still working i take it... no reason why you couldnt still have taken insurance out and just claimed in a few weeks? but hey ho... good news amazon replacing for free i suppose:good:
I too would do an Amazon return/exchange. You can do it through their site and never even have to talk to someone. I think you'll be fine as it doesn't look like it was dropped.

I did not drop the phone thankfully. And it was not like I was wearing tight skinny jeans or sumthin, the phone had plenty of room to breathe in the pocket but somehow I still managed to crack the screen. I have had a Nexus One for 3 years and I was able to keep that crack free without a problem. I understand that it is one of those things but I am not feeling the quality love from Samsung on this one.
maybe it was a bump from human traffic etc etc that you might not have noticed?
since you already said your pocket has lots of breathing room, the only time that pocket is going to be tight is when you're sitting down. i don't think the pressure from that would be enough.
Gorilla glass or not it looks like the GS 3 has extremely fragile glass on the front. I have dropped both my nexus one and my sensational xl a couple of times without problem. Neither of those devices had gorilla glass! Also several users in my country even reported cracks on the plastic back cover. This comes as a shock considering the first 2 galaxy s devices are well known for their toughness. why this sudden regression in durability?
Just a postive side, i have nothing but great things to say about the make of the phone.
I, though it sucks to say....have dropped my sexy Gs3 6 times already(this is a first for anyone phone i have owned) the silver bumper is completely ate up, looks like i dragged the edges of the phone the concrete ALOT...lol
but the Glass after all six drops.....FLAWLESS, no scratches no cracks. and all six were from waist up. lucky or not, i am impressed to say the least.
Obvious, I know...
But this it the result of missing my jacket pocket and hitting the pavement. So sad - it was only one week old. Will be shipping to Samsung for repairs shortly. Everything works completely fine, it is just the glass that is shattered. Ho hum!
:crying:
If that is the result of missing your pocket and hitting the pavement, then I can surely say, go to hell Samsung.
Anyway, I feel sad for you.
Unlucky i guess

My sympathies mate. I did the same with mine. Ten days. You may want to talk to Samsung Services. I got my glass replaced for just over $100 (US), including shipping. It would normally have cost more than $300. They had an offer on the SIII, SIII and the old note. Somehow i managed to convince them.
Good luck

sorry. a beautiful jewel like this... reveals how drop test on youtube are even more irrelevant. its a matter of luckiness to me. mine fell from 73cm of the floor and nothing. had a silicon case when it fell it was like bouncing because I think it hit the floor vertically first.
next time get a flipcover i dont know if it protects screen when dropping or some kind of front protection. thats what i'd do.
I feel for you mate. Really do. Same happened with my galaxy s3, that made me move to the note 2.
I found a guy, who repaired the broken glass (i bought a new front glass, he peeled off the old broken one and replaced it with the new) and the phone looked OK, and worked fine, but it had touchscreen issues, missed inputs and it never was the same again. I put up with it for 2 months but I eventually had to change.
I hope you will have luck with samsung. They will make a full repair hopefully...

Gorilla Glass had some explaining to do.
That's pathetic. Make the screens out of plastic if that's the result of using glass.

Apple only replace for no cost if it's a manufacturing fault not an accident.
If it's an accident then yes they do replace but is with a refurbished phone.
Or if you pay a fee they replace but again with a refurbished one
Sent from my Samsung Note II.
This would happen with any phone. You dropped it on the corner and thats the weakest point due to it being the smallest are to spread the impact. Gorilla glass is scratch proof, not .... well ... this proof. Anyway try ringing Samsung and ask if there are any repair centres in your area. They can normally do it with-in a few days ( my Galaxy Nexus was done over night) just depends how fast they can get a screen.
I do feel for you :/

FYI. I got an ipad 2 replaced because of a dent which affected the volume button. I dropped it. The ipad 2 was free and I didn't have a receipt because of that. A Day or two after visiting the Apple store, I received a new one.
My brother also had his smashed iPhone replaced at no charge.
Now, depending on who you get at the genius bar, they may talk you into getting the Apple care plan before replacing your device. Sometimes they don't.
Apple covers accidental damage (twice) with their plus plan, which is$100, and it looks like now they charge $50 service fee. Well worth it for 2 years of assurance.

People don't seem to realize that this is a $700 piece of equipment, I always take care of my laptop, camera, etc., you can't go dropping electronics and be surprised if they break.
It took me 4 days before I botched my pristine One. I dropped it head-first from my lap when I was sitting on ceramic floor. Hence the dent on chamfered edge of the top corner
The dent is small enough to be unnoticable unless under scrutiny. But it's still there, especially visible on certain angle.
I just realised aluminium is such a soft metal, it's quite ductile, well.. given the drop distance.
I think I'll just leave the dent as it is, dont want to risk getting more imperfection, what about you?
I had a case on (Capdase Karapace touch), but it's a minimalist case that doesn't cover the upper and lower part of the phone. I want to expose the shiny aluminium. Guess I kinda get what I want, duh
What about you folks? I'm sure there are a few of you that still has his/her One in perfect condition since day one.
0 scratches on sensation, and sensation had hard life i drop my sensation so many times, when I drop first and last time htc one i scratched everything what i can scratch, never again in my life aluminium NEVER.

You're VERY lucky that's typically the most vulnerable way to damage a glass. All my phones have been in perfect shape except for one. My girlfriend bought me the DNA for $740 cash for Valentines Day and when it was only three days old I cracked it. I'm talking nearly at launch, before it's repairable, and I was afraid of getting one back with a locked bootloader so I didn't insurance claim it.
Man was I scared to tell her. It was actually done when we were getting frisky in the bed and it and my Nexus 7 were under my pillow and I kind of fell down from a kneeling/standing position on top of it. When I finally told her she said "Whew, baby. Really? That's it, just the phone? I was so scared you got some kid pregnant or killed one of your exgirlfriends or something. You've really been freaking out I thought something terrible happened."
Of course I was like "HELLO! Something Terrible DID happen. I broke my DNA!!!"
Ended up trading an old device for another one because I was scared when they started RMA'ing devices with updated hboots that couldn't be unlocked and I'd rather not have a phone than have a stock one. Then I decided that was a defeatist attitude and got a riff box No lockin me out baby.

Regarding the drop, really it's less than 20 cm (~8 in) distance, the phone slipped from my laps when I was sitting on the ground level. All of my plastic phone survive without a scratch.
I kinda pissed off with myself for not Choosing a full body case, tsk
Well whats done is done.
Double post
It took me a couple months. My headphones hung on my car when I was getting out and took a fall face first into asphalt. All that happened was I got minor scuffs on two of the corners.
Day after I got it (about two weeks ago)
Was on my way to the mall specifically to get a case for it (Incipio something) and it slipped outta my pocket getting out of the cab.
Nothing too major, but pretty annoying that I did it so soon!
My wife shattered her One less than 10 days after we bought ours. Not sure how it happened, but it clearly took a trip to pound town by way of ceramic floor (indoor water park). Praise Jeebus for insurance. :good:
Get a case.

It took quite a while. I'm in the marching band for my university, and I needed to call my mom while I was out so I had it in our pocket we have in the uniform.
While we were stretching I bent down, came back up and my phone fell straight onto the concrete ( probably 4.5 feet)
It managed the hit the crease between 2 slabs right over the ir blaster. So I have a nice dent...
Screen is still flawless. Lol.

mines in mint condition no marks or scuffs i have the red version since september before that i had black one that didnt get scuffed or marked either
I have a pre-order HTC One. No scratches, dents, scuffs. It's caseless.
I never had problems with the Evo3d like others did though. Two years and mine was still 100% perfect.
I already had 2 cases before i even got the One. I used the Commuter for the first 3.5 months and kept the phone in prestine condition. Recently i got tired of hiding the design, but i didn't want to risk scuffing the aluminum, so i went with a transparent case. So mine is still in perfect condition, i only took it out to apreciate the design once in a while in controlled conditions (usually at home).
I think going with a transparent case is the perfect compromise between looks and protection, only disadvantage is slightly ticker and can't feel the metal construction in your hands.
This is standard with me and phones I have... I've got the One for six months now, and I'm really happy to have the screen unscratched but the phone has fell out of my paints already several times...
I don't know why and or whatm, but this happens with every phone I've got way too often...
if i would use a case ... i may have gone into ordinary galaxy series with a big stupid case !
i got the ONE for the Built quailty premuim aluminum ... too pretty to hide it in a case.
although i use a bumper (backless case)
I got one spot on the back where it went from black to silver and i did it on the first day. It arrived in the mail before work and i was like no case no protector, But was dying to use my new toy so i took it to work. Was careful the whole day. Then i put my phone down on the table didn't slide it or nothing picked it up and there it was a dot. I have no idea how it happened it wasn't there when i opened it from the box. There was no rough are on the table neither. That day on break i went out and bought a cheap case and a cheap protector until i could order better ones..
Ive dropped my phone couple times n still no sign of marks.I have thin transparent case which has been awesome which also provides grip to it
