My Nexus is crawling, can anyone help? - Nexus One General

When I first got my Nexus, it was blazing. I'd click an icon, and boom it was up. Butter. Now, it's laggy and glitchy. I get apps force closing all the time, when I go to write a text and click on a thread, it can take up to 5 seconds sometimes to open it, the phone will become unresponsive at times, it's just frustrating.
It's all stock firmware, and I really don't run that much. I have the following apps installed:
Amazon, Astrid, Barcode Scanner, Battery Widget, Compass, Discovery Channel, Google Earth, Engadget, Evernote, Finance, Foursquare, Gesture Search, Sky Map, Google Translate, Jewllust, Last.FM, Flixster, Open Table, Opera, NPR, Shazam, Shopper, Smart Keyboard Pro, Weather Channel, Touiteur, Visual Voicemail, Where and Yelp.
Any suggestions?

try to reboot

Less widgets, less shortcuts on Your screens, dump apps ya don't use, clear cache and history in browsers.
Make sure downloaded in file manager is deleted...
Reboot phone, try again...
Keeping memory at 70mb after ya did all that seems to run great... when memory gets under 50 I start seeing lagging...
Oh delete old texts also...

You should try using an app like advanced task manager and/or cache mate. These two are what I use to keep my phone running smooth as butter at all times.
I would also suggest rooting, as a second option, as all the custom ROMs support highmem and utilize the rest of the N1's memory capacity.

Well, while I agree that CyanogenMod is awesome, he could just wait until the next official update and hope that they sneak in highmem support via a kernel update

1) we don't know when the next update will be
2) hoping for something in there will only lead to disappointment
3) the updates are not done in a blanket form. Who knows how long you'll have to wait
4) CM will probably have it first

I honestly don't have many apps installed currently either, and I've noticed a slight slow down since I got my N1 a week ago. I may be going ahead and biting the bullet and rooting this weekend...

5) CM will have it first, probably months in advance
6) It will be tweaked and optimized constantly by all the awesome devs lurking here
7) The end result will always be faster, better, smarter, and probably more stable than the release
8) The release, if and when it comes, will be outdated before it gets sent OTA.

1. I know
2. Don't need a lesson
3. Not everyone wants to void the warranty.

Same is happening to me and im running Cyanogenmod. I thought it might of had somthing to due with apple suing htc and they took somthing out that made it work better, but i doubt it.

Just a thought

I don't think this FroYo release is what will be the mass OTA push they were talking about to come in the next couple weeks... while it is awesome on so many levels, there seem to be enough little bugs in need of a little extra polishing that this is more likely a final Beta than actual first release. Anyone else think so?
This is currently being released OTA to all Nexus Ones, you mean when they release it to other phones? I'm sure there will be some patches here and there as usual.

From my understanding, this has only been released OTA to Google employees and media review devices, and nobody else. I have yet to see any confirmation from Google they started OTA of FroYo, and a Google Android developer tweeted earlier a sarcastic sounding statement along the lines "Woke up, guess FroYo OTA started today?" and he is one of the top developers at Google.
So, I say just a thought, this isn't the OTA that will be released to the masses... of course could be totally wrong, but it doesn't feel nearly polished enough to be it.
I wouldn't be mad at all if what you are saying is true.. Cyanogen MOD for some reason just "feels" better than Froyo. Don't know why, this update is a little meh.. showing off Flash to friends will be fun of course.

Can you imagine Cyan, or Enom, or Modaco and FroYo! Oh I can't wait for that. There is a huge speed difference between this and stock 2.1 It is like putting a custom ROM on with a good kernel.
If you want to show off flash really well, youtube is great! There are some nice sites otherwise, of course, but I am really impressed with youtube... loads fast and is smooth.

First off, it never re-downloaded my apps like so many other people say it did... and yes, I wiped properly, and I even re-flashed from a fresh download. I even went back to a 2.1, and it had my list of downloads(I also have back up setting turned on), come back to 2.2, won't do it... must hate my gmail account or something.
As well, it doesn't wake properly... taking me a couple pushes sometimes, perfect other times. And never had this issue before... also doesn't exist when I went back to 2.1 for a moment to test if I was nuts or not.
thirdly, reboot your phone and tell me how your widgets are doing (although this could be the widgets more than the base OS).
Thirdly, maybe related to the second issue, have had a fair number of odd slow downs and freezes here and there while doing nothing major.
Next up, noticed it is taking multiple presses at times to open apps, beyond "normal" in quantity and consistency. Could be part of the odd slow down.
Finally, there is a list of other issues people are talking about as well...
Like I said, it just seems to have enough little bugs in need of polishing that this isn't it. Nothing major, just seems that there are some small things.
And this isn't to knock it or any of that... just saying it is a thought of mine that this isn't what the mass market OTA will be... very, very, very close, but it is the final Beta IMHO, sort of thing.
Also, to emphasis, I wiped properly, flashed two different versions, and compared to ere27 as well to make sure I wasn't smoking crack.

My point was that Google's definition of polished isn't a completely bug free type environment. Granted, alot of that comes from the fact that they're still building the OS, so there's always new enhancements coming and such. I just wouldn't mind the occasional bug fix that brought nothing new, if you get what I'm trying to say.

Funny story... I didn't even know Android re-installed Apps until Vic Gundrota mentioned it during the I/O Keynote Day 2. I had to re-wind, I was like "what? since when??"
Perhaps it's something that doesn't work on rooted phones, but I have never have Android reinstall any apps, ever, including from my G1 days, and from hopping around Nexus One ROMs. When I left Sense UI for 2.2 today, it didn't reinstall apps either, so again my theory is that it doesn't work for rooted users...?
Otherwise, I have no idea, it's never worked for me. Titanium Backup FTW.

Hmm, haven't had any of these issues. That sucks
I don't know, this seems VERY polished to me. Coming from the Sense UI, which was of course a hacked port from 2 months ago (Desire source code only released just a few days ago), the scrolling etc is like night and day! Everything just flies and feels like butter.
Aside from SORELY missing my HTC Widgets, I am LOVING FroYo!
First, Android DOES reinstall apps, but only for some reason not when you root and flash a custom ROM, or if you flash a stock ROM after having run a rooted custom ROM. My N1 is stock... I had my original N1 replaced due to dust. When I received my replacement, I logged in and all my apps automatically redownloaded, along with my bookmarks, and saved Wifi networks.
Second, some widgets may not work properly because the devs haven't updated the programs yet. For example, I use SMS Unread Count, and the Gmail widget no longer works, whereas the Dialer and Messaging widgets do. I'm sure it'll be fixed once the devs update their apps.

LOL... after constantly "chasing the dragon" with my G1, I decided to stay unrooted and stock with the N1. Unless something REALLY compelling was available for rooted phones, of course, which is certainly not the case thanks to built in tethering and upcoming Apps2SD.
Btw, I have to ask... and you can answer via PM if you prefer... how do you feel after having played with Froyo and Sense on the N1?

I love FroYo! Flash is amazing.
I can't wait to go into work and show my buds (iphone users) Hulu on my phone! Muwhahahahahahahahahah!!!
And wow, I can finally use Bluetooth now!
I will say though, the main reason I love Sense UI is because of the widgets. I find the whole icons-barfed-all-over-the-screen that Android (and iPhone OS) do *extremely* ugly. That and the stock/downloadable Android widgets are all different sizes, different colors, themes etc.... Disgusting!!!
The Sense UI widgets were elegant, consistent, all the same size, and best of all, extremely functional. I loved easily scrolling through the FriendStream/Twitter widgets; the beautiful weather widget with home screen animations; the stocks/agenda widgets... Just beautiful. A plethora of information at a glance, without even opening an app.
Now looking at the stock Android Twitter/Facebook widgets I'm forced to put on my home screens and seeing only 1 single update, having to press the left and right arrows, and both being different colors (and different colors than the black bar widgets)... Ugh...
After showing off FroYo for a few days, I will probably switch back.
Cyanogen 2.2 + HTC Sense Widgets would be my dream ROM
were we supposed to wipe even if our phone is not rooted? Because I did nit and everything works great but that would make me worry if I was supposed to have wiped.
As for 2.2 I had several bugs on 2.1 that made eclair seem not entirely stable I dont think google has quite the standard youre expecting, of course in my opinion you have every right to hold them to a high standard google themselves constantly takes aim at apple which is very solid software wise. Android to me though seems more capable if less polished, and i think that's better, plus android is young maybe after they get the major updates out of their system they will go back and polish it up. But flash and tether work great for me and ive had less if none of some of the bugs I had as of yesterday, im on top of the world so far!

Completely agree. Browser lags -A LOT- while trying to scroll.
And there seems to be no button to disable flash from loading (flash seems to be what is slowing the browser down)
I did a factory reset + reformatted SD cards before installing JP6.
Browser is worse than Eclair indeed. Something must be done about this.
Back button is the same as before: simply use the standard back button on the phone.
To make Flash content load only after you click on it: go to settings, choose Enable plug-ins and select On demand.

Alright, thanks. That actually smoothened the scrolling experience a bit too, it's still worse than on 2.1 though.
Try this:
- close the browser
- open pocketnow.com
- after it loaded, scroll a bit
- now look in task manager
With plugins disabled the browser took only more than 130 mb for just one opened page.
Of course launcher, live wallpapers, etc were killed due insufficient ram.
Free available ram + browser = perfect combo. Gg google & samsung. Great relase

It's strange pocketnow in JM9 only used 29 Mb. The problem must be flash related.
There is a memory leak in the leaked version of 2.2 for the Captivate which is what was causing the browser lag. I'm hoping this is not the case for your I9000's as this was supposed to be fixed before release and does not bode well for the release version of the captivate. However, it may be something to look into.

How did you confirm it.. In my experience, most people who "confirm" memory leaks have "confirmed" it using VERY sketchy evidence. It reminds me of the time a bunch of people "confirmed" firefox was leaking, and showed "proof". Problem is, it was wrong (and every developer knew it). Unfortunately, the crowd these days seems to hear the word "memory leak"., and be instantly biased.
Firstly, people should set addons to load "on demand" (its in settings). Secondly, ensure you have wiped the caches and reset to factory settings (if you aren't using Kies to upgrade). Because it's certainly fine here.. After you have done both of these things, then return, and comment on how they went.
I find it impressive how effortless it is to set you guys off though on angry rants, without having all the facts.
Man.. I've already wiped right after update. Also I've tested with plugins off and on demand. with flash always on is worse.

Funny, sounds like you just went off on an angry rant and also didn't seem to have any facts showing that there isn't a memory leak.
If you read the stuff from the developers in the Captivate section, it is widely known that there is a browser leak with the new update. Granted, ours was a leaked version, but it's real none the less. I'm not saying that is definitely the problem here, but based on the facts of what we have with the captivate, it is certainly something to look at.
Yes, everyone has already tried setting addons to "on demand", even turned them off completely and wiped the caches and reset back to factory settings, all of that is old news. There is even a thread posted specifically trying to address this problem.

I have dk28 quantum 2.0 rom installed with launcher plus and 7 home screens. I've aded 130 apps total to my epic 4g and have moved 70 percent of my apps to my sd card. I'm. Also using widget locker for a custom lock screen. Could someone assist me in figuring out why my froyo epic 4g is running slower than my wifes stock 2.1 epic 4g? What can I do to make my phone faster. Specifically my phone stalls on switching home screens, opening up the web browser for searching(using skyfire browser), opening google maps, and doing other various task. Any assistance or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.
Ps. I've removed my task killer which made it a little faster but stll tings slow down.

You have 130 apps installed. 130! Thats like packing 20 people in a Geo Metro.
It's climbing Mt. Everest in your boxers.
Well, you installed a leaked BETA rom first of all. Second, you have 130 apps installed. Third, you have 7 homescreens probably filled with all sorts of nonsense. Fourth, you have widgetlocker running all the time, with probably a bunch more nonsense on the lock screen.
Why do YOU think your phone is lagging?

It was my undersanding that dk28 is the offiial froyo for the epic 4g but was only released to devices with hardware versions .004 and not .005 ota. And are you saying any beta release is going to be slower than stock? 1 home screen has lp calendar with email shortcut to work and gmail. 2nd screen has facebook lp widget(1 hr update interval) 3rd screen has twitter lp widget with 1 hr update interval. 4th screen is digital clock, weather widget 1 hour update interval, photo frame deluxe(1hour interval to changepictures)... 5th screen is folders organizing 120 games and the rest of my apps. 6th screen is power control widgets. 7th screen only has sacker player widget. Lock screen has digital time, battery percent, missed calls and missed text wdget with a weather forecast widget. What should I remove to make the phone faster? Or would it be better to just run an overclock kernel?
Think of each widget you have running as an application that is running in the background, since they all take up memory and most run services. You basically have 10 applications constantly running in the background. Widgetlocker has to be destroying your system with how many widgets you are running on it. Ever check the memory usage of these widgets and applications? You an overclock your phone if you want, except I don't think you can do that yet on the beta froyo, but I cannot see you getting even acceptable battery life running all of that already, and overclocking isn't going to help.
The Froyo you installed is not the official froyo. It is a beta leak.

That's stretching it really REALLY far. Is it officially released? No. Is it beta software? That's not true either buddy. And it isn't a "leak" either. DK17 was a leak. DK28 was plain as day on Google's own servers. It was intended to be pushed to all phones after all. So stop harping on people for running it. It is far from a "beta leak". Just let it go man.

Actually; you're wrong.. it IS a beta. It was pushed to test phones only. TEST phones.. catch the hint? Testing means not complete. And there are bugs that shouldn't come with the final in this release.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Until it is pushed to phones and you don't have to ODIN it on, its a leak. Also, if this is final froyo, which sprint has publicly denied, then samsung and sprint are finished as companies, because its buggy as ****. This is a beta leak of froyo. Some have speculated that it may be a release candidate, but that would still make it a beta, just a final version of the beta.
I'm pretty sure this is a troll thread. Someone successfully rooted their phone, installed obviously unofficial custom firmware, and they still have no idea what a widget does? I call BS.

Believe me, when I first read it that is instantly what I thought too.

Thanks for the info this really helps, i will take a look at the memory widget locker is consuming. I'm ordering a extended battery so i'm not too worried on battery life plus i'm used to charging my phone whenever i'm not using it. I used to have a palm pre and that thing died instantly. I just might overclock it when I get my extra battery, I like all my widgets I use most of them too.I thought android was supposed to be awesome at multi-tasking hehe. Might have to go back to palm when they release a 4 inch touch display phone. WebOS rocks. especially when I overclocked my palm pre. Man that thing flew.
Android is awesome at multitasking. The fact that its even usable when you have 15 or so widgets running constantly in the background is evidence of this. Until we get dual core phones with at minimum 1gb of RAM, widget use has to be tempered to maintain complete fluidity of the UI.

I'm new to the android scene I only owned a samsung moment for 2 months prior to my epic 4g and before a palm pre so I haven't had time to completely read up on how the Android OS proccesses applications. I get have been able to understand how to root devices mainly so I can customize the look of my phone and rooting/applying roms or kernels seems basic so far. I didn't think I had to know how widgets work in order to root my phone? If you think I should then I will better educate my self on the OS. I appreciate your feedback. I mainly like to use widgets as shortcuts to apps I use a lot but from what you guys are saying I will definitly start to read up for on how everything works in android.

Flashed my 1st ROM today (Very Exciting:) Have a ?

Today I flashed my 1st ROM (MYN's Warm 2.2) very exciting and exhilirating. I also downloaded HTC Kernel #17. I used Unrevoked 3 to get superuser and used My Backup Pro to backup. I used this guys instructions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvWcIBcZvxw
Everything seem to go fine. I did what he said and wiped Dalvik and Cache after I installed Myn's ROM. Will that automatically install the HTC Kernel #17 after a reboot or do I have to manually do that like I installed the ROM in Recovery. Also what does the Kernel do? I follow you guys alot on XDA and you guys are VERY HELPFUL. Thanks for any help
Also, what are some other cool ROM's. I can see this becoming an addiction
Myn's ROM comes with the HTC #17 kernel already, so you don't have to flash it. If you'd like to install a kernel though, it would be flashed the same way as the ROM.
The kernel is the primary system components of the OS.
Thanks for your quick reply. After I installed Myn's ROM I wiped Cache and Dalvik again, will this hurt me and will I need to install MYN's ROM again. Everything seems to be working fine.

Everything is fine. The Dalvik cache is built upon first boot of a new system. You wipe it after installing a new rom to remove the remnants from the old one. You can wipe the dalvik as much as you want honestly, it's just going to make your next reboot take longer because of having to build the dalvik up again
Cool. Thanks. This whole flashing ROM's is pretty darn cool.
Welcome to the club!
Myn is a very popular ROM for good reason. Another popular ROM is CyanogenMod 6.1. It is missing 4G and HDMI at the moment, but the team is working on getting those included. A lot of people swear by it!
I have heard about CyanogenMod 6.1, but keep reading good things about MYN's Warm 2.2. So far so good
No need to change if you are happy with what ya' got!
I know a dude who has the Fresh ROM and when he turns his EVO to landscape and if he is ion Apps, they will turn landscape as well. That's really nice

Addicting indeed!!!
I just flashed my first last week, I think I flashed my 4th ROM this past w/e but I wound up going back to the 2nd one. I've tried the following ROM's if you're interested??:
- MIUI (12.3) Awesome ROM, imho, but it was somewhat buggy still related to MMS, receiving voicemails and 4G no worky. It DOES have some really cool features built into it that most other ROM's you'd have to download the app for it's features.
- Evo NonSense (3.3) I really like this ROM too, somewhat similar to the stock but has a cooler look and like the way it navigates via ADW.
- Myn (RLS4) I liked this ROM but, honestly, was a little let down by it's simple layout, I think the hype I've been reading about Myn ROM's got me a little over anxious........lol.
- CyanogenMod (6.1) I think I had this one up and running the shortest, it didnt really do much for me but I will admit that I think I was in too grumpy of a mood possibly so I might try it again. The biggest reason for it's short lived existence is the lack of 4G, like a few others above.
I wound up going back to Evo NonSense just cuz I like the way it navigates around, the slide lock screen and overall look/appeal of it. I'm about to upload it's latest version.....

Man, thanks for that explanation, I was unaware of it's importance since I didnt know what it really did.
Not to raid the O/P thread but I think the answer might benefit him as well. One thing that I've noticed jumping around different ROM's is that I lose important information cached in my Apps. Is there anyway to recover that information from the back up and reinstall on a freshly installed ROM?
For an ex. I use PasswordSafe Lite to store all my important pw's and account info......I just noticed when I sync'ed up to AppBrain the information is gonzo.......is there anyway to avoid this from happening or backing it up or actually getting into a backed up copy to copy n paste that data in???
TIA!

that's pretty normal. I don't think the early Sprint roms did that, but I think the later ones do. Also pretty much any other launcher you install will do the same thing.
I keep hearing about launchers (like launcher pro). What do they do and do you install them like a ROM? What is a good Launcher?

They allow you to use a different launcher other than sense, which means you can customize it to your hearts content also you can do landscape mode which is what you are after. Launcher pro and adw are the most popular I prefer launcher pro but try them both out for yourself also they are both found in the android market which means you dont have to flash them like roms or kernels GL man if you need anymore help pm me bro
Thanks bro. I just dl'ed Launcher Pro. Will try it out. I do LOVE that loop scrolling. That's really cool
Edit: Quick question. One of the main things I like about HTC Sense is the Flip Clock with My Location and Temp. I don't see a Clock Widget for Launcher Pro. Is there a clock like this for launcher pro? thx
You want fancy widget my friend. Sense style clicks for launcher pro. You can get it in the market.
Or even better go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853832 there and get a cool themed one from the third post care of stoney 666!

I used My Backup Pro and it backs up Apps and Data as well. It will backup to your SD Card OR their Servers
This ROM is eating battery quickly I have the 3500mah battery and as soon as I take it off of AC Charge it drops 5% in a matter of a couple of minutes and drops 10% in about 10 minutes. On stock it would take about an hour to drop 10% (this is all without doing anything). I am doing the same as before, nothing has changed other than I put on this ROM. Anyone have any suggestions?

The love of this phone

I love this damn phone. I dont know about yall, but I could give a **** about stock 2.2 our any of the other newer phones out.. This puppy is a beast running team whiskey, master, and eugenes roms...
These do so much, phone, browser with full flash, gps (yes mine works great), alarm, games, camera, video camera, movie player, mp3 player etc. phones do so damn much, its fun as **** trying out all these fun mods that these great developers make for our bad ass phone....
What else yall use these bad ass toys for? I love mine and had it on day 1 release
I've had mine for 2 weeks and I'm still trying to figure out everything. (I still need to get the balls to root it so I can enjoy those sweet roms)

You can love it all you want, but unless you heavily MOD this phone up (Root + Lagfix and more often than not a Custom ROM), the out of box experience is similar to these.
All of these lag/free/blackscreen issues still exist on JI6 for the Vibrant. I may put a video on YouTube with a demonstration soon, cause it's a myth, apparently.

This is kind of ironic...
I was just going to post how my stock JI6 vibrant is running pretty well; I opened and closed a bunch of stuff in a short period of time, but then tried to open the gallery and bam, my phone froze. No response from the keys, then I went to lock the phone, but it never turned back on.
Just did a battery pull
I've had mine freeze up and require a battery pull just swiping to another home screen.
im running stock ji6, no problems ever, with gps, gallery, lags.
Both of the youtube vids are with the i9000.
Maybe the vibrant just works great in Oregon! =)
I think if it's going to "just work" anywhere it should be either Mountain View, CA or Cupertino, CA.

When mine behaves like that I unload some apps. Even though it has 16 gigs, it seems you really can't just add apps until it's full.
I also suspect there is some kind of multitasking pre-emption problem too. For example, when you install an app, the phone virtually freezes when it's actually writing the app to disk. Maybe it's just a disk format or sd driver problem.

Why do lag fixes exist, if not?

No. these phones have terrible I/O performance. Notice in thr video when she runs twicca it freezes while loading data (most likely from cache). It's due to the RFS filesystem Samsung uses.
The fact that those are i9k's doesn't change anything. All the stock Galaxy S phones have this issue, save for the Nexus.

This is a problem on JI6. Nothing short of a different firmware version will fix the pause when installing apps. Not a "lag fix" either.
I have no problems with my Vibrant. Trolls will Troll because that's what they do, but the 0.001% of owners here don't give a good idea of what regular owners really think. The ones that consistently complain about how horrible the phone is and continues to use it, even after claiming to have sold it or will be, should just be ignored. There is an ulterior motive here.
I have stock JL5, and it runs great. JI6 has a problem with the Gallery, well known and I posted a solution for it already. But JL5 is running so good there really isn't much reason to be running JI6 over it.

Geez, my phone sure has never behaved like that (thankfully!); and I'm "out of the box." I can see how it would drive you nuts, lead you to "lag-fixes," etc.! Just want to point out that the problem sure ain't universal, for whatever reason. (I don't have a ton of apps installed; I wonder if that makes a difference.)
Occasionally, there will be a slight pause when opening an app or something, but it doesn't ruin my day...

I keep getting nervous about rooting, because I see people who write stuff in these and phandroid's forums about peoples phones starting to act weird right after they do it. I'm also worried about how to do updates to newer versions of android, and how make sure I have my contacts backed up because my buddy did his EVO and told me he lost all hiscontacts and wasn't able to sync them with google. First time owning a smartphone and first time owning an Android phone, I rooted the phone on day one, nothing bad happened. All I gained are benefits, adblock, costume roms (froyo 2.2), root explorer, voodoo, etc
Yeah, I've had it for two weeks and love it! I can only imagine how much better it'll be when I do root it. Should I just follow the tutorial on here? And then what roms does everyone suggest?
