My disappointment with Sprint and with HTC - Hero CDMA General

I don't know if this is worthy of a new thread or not, if you guys find it not to be then you can delete it. I just wanted to post this so that i can vent my anger out on Sprint and no one besides you guys at XDA would probably care. I am very upset with Sprint and all of their products that i have so far. I got into the smartphone scene with a palm and i had that for quite a while, things worked great on it. Then i made the switch to the HTC Diamond. I was excited for the phone until i got it. It had a huge battery problem, i would probably get 5 hours most on the phone, and it lagged severely. To me, that is a huge problem so if i were with Sprint and HTC i would have fixed that right away. But, alas sprint is not that kind of company, so they left it. Thanks to the developers, they fixed Sprint and HTCs problem.
I then switched to the HTC Hero, again i was very excited for this phone and i saved for quite a while to purchase it. But again, when i got it i was disappointed. The phone lagged more than i expected and again, there was a battery issue. HTC get the hint already, fix your battery scripting. So i did the most sensible thing, i rooted my phone and upgraded with developer roms because it seems developers care more than Sprint.
Now i sit here waiting for Android 2.1 which sprint promises that they will release. I hear so many dates, first one said it was suppose to be released on March 23 and now i hear April 9th. And to make matters even worse, they are now releasing 2 new phones to their lineup. I am excited for these new phones, the nexus one and the EVO, but what the heck sprint, fix your current problems!
I am very interested in the EVO, from what i read, it is suppose to have quite a few cool things. But, i am not going to let the appearance fool me, this phone seems so powerful that sprint isnt gonna be able to handle it and they will release some great looking phone with a ton of problems, and instead of fixing these problems, they'll probably just try to push another phone on us. The Evo says it will have an 8 megapixel camera, seems impressive but the Hero has a 5 megapixel camera, that honestly, is **** without some tweeking to it. So i think an 8 megapixel camera will probably be the same with no fix from sprint or htc. Next, they promise a great processor, this sounds good but to me it sounds like another phone with 5 hours of battery life. I may be wrong but so far htc's previous products are all the same in this field.
I may just ranting but i really needed to get this out, i still don't know why i stick with sprint and htc, i guess i am loyal and i have faith that one day they will listen to their customers and fix their stuff. I don't know if anyone else feels this way too but this is what i have noticed since i got onboard with htc and sprint.

haha thats great, thanks i need that, haha. if crying gets things fixed with these companies then i am there.

I would imagine that all smartphone get terrible battery life. They are basically pocket-sized computers. It's not just HTC's. They improved the Hero a ton with the US version compared to the Euro one. Maybe switching to a non-smartphone might be your option? I don't know. I can tell you that with 2.1, our Heroes will have better battery life once we get the update. Because these leaked ROMs already do. Anyways, I don't really think Sprint is the problem with the phone. They are just the carrier minus the few apps they install. Do you live in a spot that has good coverage from Sprint? Because I will tell you this...If you have bad coverage, you won't get good battery life. Maybe switching carriers would help. Just my opinion.

if you're not satisfied..then go get yourself an iPhone.....end of thread..

well one reason i was upset is with the diamond i had about 4 hours to 5 hours with the phone, sleep or active. I then learned about rooting the phone and i installed a rom that fixed that problem. so my guess was it was some type of scripting error that the companies just never got around to fixing. And i live in AZ, sprint and verizon have the best coverage, the rest suck out here so i wouldnt consider any of them.

What kind of battery problem are you having with the hero? I can easily get through the day on a charge most of the time.
And even when I can't, keeping a second usb cable at my office so I can plug in there every now and then isn't a big deal. I consider it more than a fair trade-off for being able to carry that much computing power in my pocket.
It wasn't all that many years ago that I owned a desktop computer that had a slower processor, less ram, less storage, crappier screen and MUCH slower internet access than what my hero has.
I really don't understand why so many people ***** about "only" one day of battery life. What's so freakin' inconvenient about having your phone plugged in while you sleep?
Hell, when I carried a Treo 650 I had to have my phone plus two spare batteries fully charged when I left the house in the morning if I expected to get through just to the end of the workday. Didn't really bother me, it's just the trade-off I had to make to have the capabilities that it gave me.
It's just basic physics. More processing power uses more electricity. More functionality means that processing power is being utilized even when you're not using the phone. That also costs electricity. Larger screen, you guessed it, needs more electricity. And yet people still demand that their phones be slim and sexy.
You want a phone that does all this cool ****? Well, then be prepared to plug it in every once in awhile. If they made these things with the ability to go 17 days between charges they'd have to be the size of a phone book to accomodate the battery.

No reason to be short, I am glad to hear others opinions on Sprint and HTC in general.
On another note, I could never be more satisfied with my phone, rom, battery life, stability, coverage, and rate plan.
Except Im switching to Evo. Lol!

This shows the value and worth of the developer forum. If it had not have been for the developer forums I would have stopped getting smartphones a long time ago.

Find me one that says "would you like CHEESE with that WHINE?" Lol
Btah
Im sorry experience is so horrible. I dont reccomend an iphone, however, perhaps live with it until Evo or N1? Im quite sure whatever phone you chose will have as many bad reports as good. Keep your chin up kid, this is Android!

well with the hero i had alright battery life, i would get 8 hours to 10 hours until i rooted and switched to the roms which get me a days worth and that is more than enough for me. And i am glad opinions can be shot down with a "purchase the iphone," seems like anyones solution to anything is an iphone

My friend, opinions can only be shot down if you let them. Dont feed those trolls, theyll evwntually go away.
Like I said, im sorry to hear your experience has been so bad, but I doubt youll find better.
Besides, the Hero is the hottest topic at any dinner table, with just the name alone.
"what kind of phone do you have?"
"oh, this old thing? this is the HERO!"

iphone isn't a bad device, it's popular for a reason. It just wasn't for me. I've generally had good experiences with my hero. Mostly because of xda and a lot of my own work on roms. Android really is an excellent operating platform.

Well, to be fair, it is what everything seems to get compared to.
In all honesty after having carried one for two years, I have to say it's a great phone for its target audience. It's a reasonably capable smartphone that "just works". For non-geeks who want a phone that does all the "cool stuff", I think it's a good fit.
For people like me and the others who seek out forums like this one, it's just about the most frustrating damn phone in the world, though. It sucks having all that processing power in your fingertips but not being able to utilize it fully because Apple has the iPhone ecosystem locked down so tight. Not to mention that if I wanted to write my own software for it, I had to go out and buy a Mac! I had my first basic Android app loaded and running on my hero the same night I brought it home.
As far as your frustration with Sprint and HTC being slow with updates.... Just throw a 2.1 rom from this forum on it and stop worrying. I'm running DamageControl on mine, and I can honestly say I'm not the least bit interested in the official 2.1 update from sprint. There's nothing interesting even rumored to be in it that I don't already have.

Thanks, trust me, i love the hero. And i love XDA, i enjoy coming on this website to find what cool new roms are out and testing them. I think that the EVO may be an even better dinner table discussion, i can picture it now, "hey, is that an HDMI cable input?" "Oh this old thing, yea it is" haha

Well first I am sure Sprint is trying to work with HTC to fix all the bugs in 2.1. Other phones like Motorola Droid do not come with the sense UI, so HTC needs to have time to incorporate that. I am sure the original date may have been March 23, but like everyone knows some deadlines cant be met. We are not even supposed to know it was to be released that day or April 9. Someone leaks this information and that causes all the problems. Most of the time they dont even know a release date until all the beta testing is done. Stop paying attention to the dates people post. Plus if Sprint released this with bugs everyone would complain. i know one time with the HTC Touch Pro sprint released a ROM early and had to recall it. I dont think they want to do that sort of thing again.
For battery life, get an extended battery. The Sprint Hero uses the same has the HTC TP2 battery and they have a 2000mah battery that is the same size as stock for like $10 and its 500mah more.
As for technology, once you buy the Evo, it will be outdated just like the Hero. Thats part of technology life. be happy if you get 6 month out of your device before there is a better replacement.

6 months?
I've had my hero for just over 2 weeks now, and in that time it's been officially announced that the N1 and EVO are on their way to Sprint.
I couldn't wait any longer, though. My wife and I have been doing without cell phones for awhile since we moved to a new town. I now live a 5 mile drive from even the slightest hint of an AT&T signal, not a good deal for our iPhones. I've been holding out to see what got announced this spring, but nobody was saying anything and impatience finally got the better of me and I decided the Hero would be "just fine". (Which worked out, because none of the announced phones will be on the shelf soon enough that I could have waited anyway.)

Vodafone HTC HD2 get HTC Nexus as replacement

This phone has obviously got **** loads of issues, if it wasent for this forum then It would have been a piece of junk.
I have hopes that HTC will bring out firmware but now with this new Nexus kicking off im asking myself what support can we expect from HTC who is now fully in joint support with Googles Android.
From a business point of view it makes sense to realise that the HD2 was in fact a failure and to offer only the bare minimum support to enable a success of the nexus one.
Just like Vodafone decided to axe the HD2 and now a nice news flash comes through that Vodafone UK will be offering the Nexus one, which just further supports my theory.
Having said that I wonder if after enough complaining i would be able to get a Nexus one as like for like replacement for my HD2.
I was firm supporter of WM but with the current situation i cannot imagine HTC being arsed about a flawed product and development for WM7 either when they just done this Android deal.
Suppose the only real problem i have with android is unable to run TOMTOM.
Lets have a banter your views are welcome.
HTC will not lay its eggs in one basket
HD2 is a flawed product?
lmao. Get a grip man.
You do know most people who post on forums, post because they are unhappy with something.
There are plenty of people out there who think the HD2 is the best phone that they've ever owned, just because they dont clog up the forum with posts on how happy they are (or because they actually RTFM) doesnt make the device a piece of junk.
Thank you

conencting to my WIFI router i get oh waite ... 10% signal level. what does my laptop get thats in the same spot? ****ign 90% full speed.

Vodafone is getting the nexus via google not via htc..they drop the hd2 because of apple request..

Strange, but people who have not even heard of XDA-Developers, such as Chinese speakers in Taiwan who have the HD2 would strongly disagree with you.

I suggest you do a search on Peter Chou's recent interviews. He is HTC's CEO. Since he has a better idea of what HTC is up to, I am inclined to believe what he says, not what you conceive to be reality.
Just like Vodafone decided to axe the HD2 and now a nice news flash comes through that Vodafone UK will be offering the Nexus one, which just further supports my theory.

Well written, Steven Paul Jobs . Yes, its been confirmed by other member. So far ONE, and counting.
There are definately issues with this phone.....T-Mobile can't be bothered to release a Rom update they say that it is undergoing thorough testing....so we will probably get it when Windows mobile 90 comes out in the year 2090.
I agree with Rougue but I don't think that name calling and offensive language solve anything

Yea i am p'd off because i was going to get the Samsung Omnia 2 but then saw the HTC hd2 and i realy enjoyed my HTC touch cruise. So I waited a long time, read reviews and all that changed provider to Vodafone paying top dollar even though i get 40% discount on Orange contract just to be presented a sheep in wolves clothing after extensive use and being told oh no these faults are phantom and dont exist, yea right
Thanks for the feedback im looking forward to reading CEO Peter Chou's interviews which no doubt is filled with deceit of the 9th kind.
I have a temper excuse my outbursts
HTC have been quitely making phones for many companies behind the scenes for years. Over the last few years they have (quite rightly IMHO) "come out" as a top flight device designer and fabricator. They don't stick to one operating system and I don't think ever will. What your service provider decides to do is entirely outwith the control of HTC, who, i suspect, will continue to design and sell the highest quality products in all "open source" operating systems under their own name as well as proprietary OS's for other vendors.
Have Vodafone actually supported you as a customer to the same level that HTC has to us who bought unlocked phones? For me, Vodaphone have never supported Windows Mobile properly. My Omnia only ever had 1 update from them which is why I decided to buy unlocked this time. I still have a contract with Vodafone and will get a free upgrade from my Omnia when my contract allows but no matter what I choose i do not believe that it will be supported as well as an unlocked handset.
Most devices have issues, these are released very quickly into an aggressive market. For me it is how a company responds to these things that is important. Service providers, for me, just cannot provide that support. HTC are not perfect but I chose to "early adopt". In technology we used to always say never buy version 1 of anything, always wait for services packs to come out and be implemented ina new version release. Early adopters are known to be at the bleeding edge, and this can be messy, but fun at times.
Please note that this is my opinion, stated in a respectful manner. I make no claims to speak for every HD2 user, mobile phone maker or service provider in the wordls. I speak from my personal experience. I do not republish 3rd hand gossip from other sites and pretend I have inside knowledge. My HD2 is not perfect, it's the best phone I have ever had though.
Regards.
I have had issues posted... and I fixed all of them with stuff I found here... I consider it tweaking
My flash shots are fine, WiFi is good (you wont get a better signal with the Nexus... its all HTC hardware!), NO issues with radio, I use WM sms instead of HTC... I get all my sent notifications and it ALWAYS gets sent.... I love my phone! I am also faster with Swype on my keyboard than if you gave me a ISheep to txt with....
Now, having said all that, I MAY consider buying a Nexus in the next incarnation once they offer Multitouch, a screen the size of my HD2, the same thickness of my HD2 and when even more Android apps hit the market. I am really impressed by some of the stuff Android has been coming out with and the speed of the OS (On the Snapdragon chip of course)... Qualcomm is coming out with 1.5 mobile chips soon! I can't imagine what that would do for our WM and Android devices!
Even if I bought one, I would use it as an alternative to my WM phone (HD2 for today). Its only cause I love the WM platform so much cause of the ability to tweak and ek out more performance/customization.... if you don't like that kind of thing, NEVER buy a WM phone! I also have all the software I need already for my daily use! If my foray into the Android platform keeps me happy (with alternatives to apps I am using now and newer fun stuff), I MAY consider a move....
My final word... the Nexus 1 is a fine phone it seems... however, its lacking just a little IMHO to get me to even consider it at this point... its darned close though... WM needs to buck up and wow us with WM7 or they may even lose some hardened WM users like me... maybe

What a load of bull! The HD2 is the BEST PHONE AT THE MOMENT! Vodafone could simply not meet the huge demands for the HD2, plus they had Apple biting their heads off cos the HD2 was going to crush Iphone sales at Voda. That is the reason why they pulled.
I have to say, I think the HD2 is the absolute best thing ever, i have had the iphone and various other htc`s and by far this is the best.
I admit i must be one of the lucky ones as i havent had a single problem so far and have customized it to my exact needs, so to me it is flawless !
I`m not geeky but i just love the way there is always something to learn and add and tweek, when i had the iphone all you had to do was wait until the next app to come out that kept you busy for the next 5 mins ? its a phone that is all colours and glitz to me, and it didnt work for what so ever and many friends have had so many problems with them its untrue. but we could be here forever battling over phones, it is totally personel preference.
but i just wanted to add my pennies worth by backing the hd2 and as stated previously most people do just post about problems they are having or had and not posting about how well things are going...
i wish you all the best with your new phone :

The Definitive Android 2.1 Upgrade Chart - Updated With User Interfaces

Alright, like everyone else, I have grown tired of all the complaining about the 2.1 update. Yes, I would love to get my hands on the official update as I feel our 2.1 leak was pretty buggy. The devs have done great with what they have to work with, and I love running 2.1 even with some of the quirks that are inherent to a hacked ROM.
What I don't get is how everyone can be so upset with Sprint. Personally, I am on Sprint because they are cheap, and offer good cell phone service where I live. That's it. If you are upset with your carrier (as I was with my extremely high bills on Verizon) then buy out your contract and go to another carrier. However, don't expect that you will get your magical 2.1 upgrade any sooner with any other carrier.
Do most people realize that there is not a single Android phone for sale in America that has ever been upgraded to 2.1 from 1.5 or 1.6? In fact, there are only three phones that have ever even received an Android OS upgrade at all. The T-Mobile G1 (1.0-1.6), the T-Mobile myTouch 3G (1.5-1.6), and the Motorola Droid (2.0-2.1). That's it people.
For all the people blaming Sprint, HTC, or even Sense for how long it's taking them, look around. The T-Mobile G1 and myTouch3G both came out before the Hero, both run vanilla Andoid, and neither of them have been upgraded to 2.1. Just look at all the phones that are still running 1.5 and 1.6.
Personally, I think it will be hilarious if Sprint is the first carrier in America to upgrade a phone from 1.5 to 2.1. If this upgrade happens soon, this will certainly be the case. I just don't get how people can be so upset that we don't have the official 2.1 yet when there are only three phones that have it (two of which launched with it, and one of which launched with 2.0).
I apologize for making a new thread, but I wanted the chart below to have it's own space, and I didn't want it to get buried in one of the many other 2.1 threads. I believe this chart contains every Android phone available on one of the 4 major carriers in America. I compiled this list using wikipedia, so I didn't verify that it is 100% valid. I listed only phones available in America, and cleaned up the formatting to make it useful. Enjoy.

I Gotta say that no one should be PO'D at Sprint,HTC or any other company for that matter, Sprint is the Best carrier I've been. Quit whining 2.1 will arrive before you all know it. Shut up root your hero while you still can flash a custom 2.1 rom and be happy. i Know im not gonna to upgrade to the official release. Ill wait to one my fav dev's puts out a 2.1 rom based off the otw upgrade with all fat trimmed off so it runs the way it should. So everybody behave your selves the upgrade from sprint will come no doubt, then you can go back to whining about how laggy and buggy your 2.1 hero is.
As for me Im gonna flash toast's new one fresh-toast 1.1, oh maybe something from damageless, oh hey darchstar's got a new one wow decision, decisions, lol
Thanks for doing this.
This definitively shows that the problem is not with Sprint and that manufacturers seem to have decided that there is no benefit to them whatsoever to supporting existing customers. Google is also failing to get the situation under control.

I agree that people should stop whining about 2.1, it's more annoying than the 2.1 posts.
I guess my personal aggravation is the fact that it seems if you don't have the latest and greatest phone through your carrier's catalog you seem to just be cast in the corner. Was it not just 5 months ago the Hero was the savior and pride and joy of sprint's network and now with the evo on its way it's as if were the red headed child sitting in the corner. I agree that when it comes it comes but I just don't like the feel a company gives when they do something like that. Yes market and pay attention to your new toy but don't forget your loyal followers and their needs when we're locked in to at least 12 months with a phone you just called the greatest thing since the last big hit.
Its always been the same with every OS and every carrier. I remember being wint Windows same thing, these company make the money in the hardware not software therefore it's no business sense to give a great deal of support for older hardware. The truth of the matter is that for companies like HTC, people will continue to purchase the latest, even after all the waiting on the Hero most people will still go out and get the Evo. The only company making great support is Apple.

That's it people.

sprint still sucks Di** in my opinion, 2.1 or not
I will tell you why I am upset with sprint over this. It's because sprint in conjunction with HTC and Samsung decided back late last year that instead of doing maintenance updates to fix the known issues with both phones they would upgrade the phones to 2.1 and include the fixes then. This certainly implied some urgency on their part. But apparently none of the companies involved put enough resources into the upgrade. Also this fantasy of doing both phones at the same time tells me they are not interested in getting the updates out as soon as they are available because someone might be upset if one gets done before the other.
I rooted back in Jan and my phone works great. But I also expect when I buy a premium phone that it is supported properly by Sprint and the phone manufactures. If they can't do that then they have failed. I don't care if no other phone has been upgraded to 2.1. Every other carrier in the US has a phone that runs 2.1 yet sprint can't even give us a date to have that option. They have really screwed this up.

Well since I don't go to salespersons who don't in some way look after my interests that would mean that I wouldn't go back to Sprint. I have no intention of doing that. Sprint provides a quality service at an affordable price. They just can't afford to continue to make mistakes like this or they will continue their decline until they are out of business and I don't want to see that happen.
it's the old "fire and forget" routine.

Completely off topic, but has anyone ever actually had to say "TouchWiz" out loud to someone?
Talk about the worst product name ever. I don't think I could buy a phone with that UI on it, simply because I would be too embarrassed to actually tell anyone that I was playing with my "TouchWiz".

What the hell? AT&Fee doesn't have a 2.1 device and neither does T-Mobile really. They have the Nexus One, but it is not sold in stores and with all the hardware and software issues, it's not worth mentioning. The only carrier with any 2.1 devices is Verizon and that is just as of now. The MT3G, EVO, and other devices are well on the way.
think of it this way... you're gonna want to run Froyo when it comes out anyway & NO WAY is Sprint or HTC gonna bother with an official upgrade for that. They'll be pushing the EVO/Next Big Thing. Thank goodness for the great developers working on stuff here.

Interesting thread about Bell Vibrant issues

I guess following thread is a very good example of how civilized people deal with issues. Samsung is in question.

May be we need to start campaign about Froyo/Gingerbread using same tactics?
That was promised and a lot of hardware were bought because of this. Time to hold promises!
It's a little bit to late (because some variants are already got/getting Froyo), but there is a chance consolidate across all variants.

That thread is because of real failures on the device, rendering them unusable. Sorry, but you're a fool if you purchased a device because it might get an update, it's not Samsung's fault.
I'm getting a bit frustrated waiting for this update because there are things popping up that require Froyo, but some of these comments/threads on a number of forums are just silly.
By all means, make yourself heard, but the lack of Froyo doesn't render the device unusable.
Verizon will give it to us when they are satisfied with the build. A 1960's hippie movement will not get it here any faster.
I am fine with 2.1 myself.
good day.

My phone USB failed few days ago. I have thread here, trying to get additional information if others have similar problems. That said VZ already send another one for free. I do not know yet if it is new or refarb.
What I think is that, promise is what it is. I didn't pushed them to promise anything. But, getting normal support for device is something I've assumed at the time of purchase phone + dock + other crap. Would I know that everything is so slow, I might got another phone. I think I'm not alone here.

They committed to releasing the update, they gave an estimated time frame for release, they didn't PROMISE anything. Froyo is coming, but the lack of it doesn't mean your phone doesn't work. Updates aren't normal support, they're updates. 2.2 is not required for the phone to function.
The funny thing is you're absolutely not alone (pretty sure I made that clear in my OP), it's just getting ridiculous some of the things people are demanding. It's not Samsung, nor Verizon's fault you purchased a device based on what it might be. That's your fault, period. I purchased this phone for what it was the day I got it, not for some dream land a few months down the road.
I feel about this a little bit differently, looking at the back of my phone dock. It has easy readable label saying that some functionality will be available when 2.2 update released. And it was promised SHORTLY. So shortly, that people found it OK to hold over 30 days grace period.
Overall I do not think it silly to expect something. I DO EXPECT that MS will patch Windows, Live etc. I DO EXPECT that HP, Dell and others update drivers. This practice exists for years now.
I do not know why it sounds funny when I expect that Samsung or VZ will fix GPS and other issues?
It is not that I'm screaming for update right now. But some clarity about situation will be greatly appreciated. Neither VZ nor Samsung didn't stepped down from their heights to inform us, mere mortals.

This is fair, but can you name companies that do this? Unfortunately it's very rare.
They can't give you a set ETA (software is such that you can't give out fixed dates until it's done), nor can they really tell you what they're working on/why it's delayed (would you really understand if they did tell you?). The best they could tell you is "we're working on it," and unless you live in a cave (or subscribe to one of the ridiculous conspiracy theories), you already know that.
And again, YOU deciding to hang onto the dock is your fault, not Samsung's. At 29 days, you could've strolled into the VZW store, and returned it. And again, they will release Froyo for the Verizon Samsung Fascinate. If they do not, they will be in real legal trouble because suddenly, you'd have a case for a class action lawsuit because of your dock.

Believe it or not, I'm in IT... And I tell you - there is always deadlines and dates are set in stone. Moreover, public beta will settle all worries. It is easy way to show to average public what company does and where it stays at the moment. That is how other companies handle same problems. MS with SP betas is good sample. Even secretive Apple does it!
I guess, we have a case for class action. I just wonder for how long we should wait before initiating it? As of now, we have a pretty good reason to believe that time for Froyo is gone, because Gingerbread is out and Samsung has it. Do you see my point?
As to return... Well, it not going to happen in the future. I'm going to stay away from Samsung products. Unfortunately I cannot leave VZ.

"IT" and software development are not the same thing.
Public beta works with basic software, and even some OSes, not with phones. You release a public beta that has a bug that can brick your phone, and you're screwed. It's MUCH more difficult to fix a bricked phone than it is to fix a desktop that won't boot properly.
You don't have a case, yet. If Samsung fails to deliver 2.2, then you will, not until then.

No need to explain what exactly I do. It is development.
Go to Apple site and figure out how they deploy public betas for iOS. Nobody complains about broken phones. I never heard about this.
Hell!!! Film the video for youtube if not anything else! Show prototypes in the stores! Even this will be better then noting! Release official statement. Just do not sit like cat in the sand!
They simply are not willing to do anything, because they got their money already.
And could you please define "fails to deliver"? As far as I'm concerned they pretty much failed. Froyo was released and pulled off several times on other SGS phones. And they have Froyo on tab, which essentially same hardware. What is this?
Though I might consider it as showing progress ;-) Problem is that at such pace phone will physically pass out sooner then we get update.
Believe it or not, I am actually trying to get them into admitting that Froyo will not be released.
I got one rep who replied to say it, however, she doesn't know wtf she is talking about. Depending on their next few replies if whether I crack the email open and send it to the major blog sites.
I am trying to get someone who actually knows something to admit that 2.2 is not coming. We shall see. Past that, you are right, there is not a damn thing we can do until its determined that its NOT coming out.

Tell that to the hundreds of thousands who bought a cradle with a sticker on it saying "2.2 required for this to function".
Is that their fault they received a product which doesn't work as advertised, just to open the box up to a "gotch'ya!" sticker?
Is that somehow not Samsung nor Verizon's fault, too?
Sometimes I wonder how often people on here ever take responsibility, seeing as they are so quick to make excuses and attack those wronged. You would all do well in politics or customer service; Neither party holds anyone accountable for their false promises.
The problem is, until they admit that its not being released, they have us all on a technicality, that coming soon has no defined time frame. Leaked internal documents are likely not admissible in a lawsuit.
Its ****ty, its unethical, but it is what it is.
I am just as angry as well.
According the news, Samsung is going to introduce Galaxy S ancestor in Barcelona in February. So, I guess first Galaxy S lifespan is even shorter than I've expected. Sure, it is because was VZ was late to the game. Churning out new models at such pace doesn't leave time to support old ones.
Galaxy s is like lexus to toyota. It's just a line of phones from samsung which are high end.
Adrynalyne is right when he says that there is nothing that we can do but make them admit that nothing is coming out...

Funny you mention apple, and then in the same breath you talk about making phones obsolete.
Apple and Samsung are apples and oranges (lol). Apple has ONE phone (3 if you want to count the og, 3g, and 3gs, but those are mostly obsolete), Samsung has at least 4 or 5 in the US alone. Each on different networks, and with differing software setups (bloatware). How again are they going to ensure they don't start ****ing **** up if they push a public beta? Trust me, I'd LOVE if they did that, but it's an unrealistic expectation.
And "fails to deliver" means it doesn't come, at all, ever, period. When they admit to freezing development and NOT releasing anything past 2.1, then everyone who purchased a dock has a case for a class action lawsuit.

Don't talk to me about accountability when you are so eager to blame someone else for your failure to return a product you weren't satisfied with. It's also your fault you decided to wait it out for Froyo.
You chose to wait, that's on you. So now it's a matter of you waiting for them to release 2.2+, or them to admit they won't release it.
I'm not defending anyone, I'm just tired of the stupid crap I'm seeing from people over this update. I didn't buy that dock because I think it's a piece of crap, regardless of the fact the 3.5mm jack doesn't work (which, BTW, sounds like it's the ONLY thing not working, it charges the phone, displays the dock program).

If adrynalyne is talking to somebody at Samsung, would be nice if he can share that person contact. I guess idea is to have one single point of force application.
Even if that person is brainless office droid, he will have to report up at some point, if number and intensity of complaints is over some threshold.
Could we here formulate some collective message and start pushing it from different emails?
I'd just like to use the 3.5mm audio out on my dock, have map rotation gesture working in maps and get chrome to phone back; new gmail client would be a nice upgrade... Hopefully it will happen someday...

Google stepping up/fragmentation

I like my EVO very much, best device that I had and last me more then any other phone in the market(besides iPhone) and there is one thing the bugs the hell out of me tho and is fragmentation, specially this week, we got another EVO, epic and a shift 4G(all good phones btw) in our family but since I rooted mine and I was running cm7 and the stock Evo has sense so I forgot how different they are when you use them, trying to explain something was a pain in the butt so I have to flash a sense rom to give them the right direction(person the got the EVO came from blackberry and he was lost of what to do) , well after that I'm at work and someone had a mytouch (original) and still diference , the worse part is the moto, Sammy and HTC all use different layout in buttons! Why don't they have a set up one for all Google devices? ?? I mean the EVO makes more sense to me but for my friend thinks the epic does, this is something the Google should have control from the beggining, like I said I love Android but some stuff needs to changed
I have an iPhone3GS as well and if a iPhone 4 user asked me about settings or set ups is the same but if someone ask me how to use the mail app in HTC EVO with sense is different from the email app he aosp roms come with, I know how to do it no problem for me but a lot new comers are having problem with this kind of problems . I help that much the I can
And lets no talk about updates to new version cause that's another crazy topic, man the hero got 2.1 after almost 6 months and that was it, the epic (power phone) got official froyo 6 months later, and all those little android devices lmade by LG, Samsung, etc will probably never get froyo or gingerbread .
Anyways Gizmodo just published this article about Android fragmentation and it looks like finally Google will work on it

Man I hope so.
I have no problems with putting a "skin" over top of android, but, it HAS to be a limit. This is a prefect way for Google to slap back at the companies that are or are getting ready to lock their phones down (HTC! ><).
It is definitely getting out of hand and needs to be put in check for the sake of Android.

The skin is all good but like tethering it should be free for all froyo and all carriers block it, 4G tethering is nice when it works but I do t use it enough to pay so that's one of the reason I rooted
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I don't really see your argument. Yeah fragmentation sucks, but to the average Joe it doesn't mattter. The example you used of your rooted EVO was terrible. Your EVO, had it not been modified by you would look and be exactly the same as your friends brand new EVO.
The majority of people don't even know what version of Android their phone is running. They don't even know there is a new version available until their phone tells them its time to update.
Androids fragmentation has improved greatly with the release of froyo. It becomes a double edged sword when it comes to OEMs having the ability to modify Android. It gives us consumers choice, at the expense of receiving slower updates. The problem is people need to vote with their wallets if they want change. People are voting with their wallets because they are buying phones with motoblur, sense, and touchwiz.

People are buying phones with motoblur, sense and touchwiz because for the majority.. that's all there is.
Where are the phones with Vanilla Android? Not everyone has access to a Nexus S or even knows what the difference is. That is definitely why Google needs to step in and show what Android really is.
Skins/UI's are fine and choice is always great. It just needs to be done in a cleaner, less bloated way. I really hope google reins it in a little bit..

Anyways Gizmodo just published this article about Android fragmentation and it looks like finally Google will work on it

normally, I would agree with this statement, except this:
MOST people don't choose to go to a carrier because of a phone (or skin on said phone), they already have a carrier they have a relationship with, and get whatever phone the rep says is "the best thing right now", and "hey, it's an android!", without knowing what that really means.
then they often find that the phone they purchased has very little in common with their friends android, diminishing the inclusiveness a shared brand should have. (think iphone) among other things mentioned previously like support, updates, etc.

Yeah well is just diferrent stuff Guys be open minded on what people wants, I know most here like to work for our phone and I say this cause we flash, modify, and do all sort of crazy stuff and I like it but no everyone is like that some people want something the works for them, a smartphone should help you to make your life easier and replace multiple devices, books and sometimes aagendas and to get this experience right Google needs to step up and make it happen(gingerbread got the copy and paste updated and works better then froyo or eclair) , HTC is clearly the first one going the right direction with sense and then everybody thought they have something better like motoblur and touchwiz and just makes a lot difference for the user using it , Google needs to drive they experience and should make sure manufactures updates their devices the way everyone has the great experience that we (xda users do)

HTC EVO 4G - The People's Smartphone

This is just a random banter, but I have to say that of all smartphones I've used or tinkered with, this one to me has had the most love. I can't help but notice how all the awesome and devoted devs here on XDA are still porting and creating ROMs for this amazing phone. The EVO is what got me into Android and modifying ROMs of my own. Now that the EVO has been discontinued, let us take a moment to reflect on its majestic legacy, and see it off the way it deserves. Some key moments I remember are:
-When I saw the commercial for the EVO and it blew my mind.
-Waiting three weeks for mine to come in stock.
-When I finally bought it: August 8, 2010.
-When I learned about rooting and nervously tried it for myself.
-When I found XDA, with a whole section devoted to the EVO.
-When I tried the unlocked hotspot for the first time.
-When I accepted an OTA and lost root, not knowing what I just did.
-Waiting impatiently for 4.24 to gain root.
-Learning 4.24 had finally gained root, and leaving work early so I could root my EVO.
These are just a few moments, but there are many more. I know this post probably sounds crazy, but I know there are other people who feel this way too. If so, please feel free to share your experiences with "The People's Smartphone".
I would agree, I've had mine for over a year. Sure I want a new phone but nothing out has made me want to get rid of my evo yet.
We're comin from a pure power source.
Ahhh, to reminisce..
The EVO was my very first smartphone. I came from a LG Rumor. My EVO is still my daily driver. I got mine on Aug. 3rd 2010, just a couple months after its release. I got into the root and mod scene a few months after that.
The EVO is definately a historical device. It was the first for so many things. Most notibly for me was it was the first iPhone killer. The first real offering for iDevice haters like myself.
I have a lot of good memories with my EVO. It'll remain my current device until my contract is fullfilled. Reason being so I can carrier unlock it and continue to use it for whatever I want thereafter. Even without service it still makes a great mini tablet on wifi lol. I'll keep my EVO and use it for as long as it runs. The day it dies will be a sad day; however I still wont get rid of it lol. It'll make a snazzy paperweight! Maybe I'll make a shrine for it haha -shrugs-
I've babied my EVO so much that it still looks like it did the day it came out of the box. Not a scratch or ding on it. Still looks and performs new!

+1 to all of that. +1000 for the EVO being the 1st iPhone killer!
Wife and I decided to fire AT&T, sold both of our iphone 3s, got our Evo 4Gs and never looked back. +1 to all the comments so far. Sent a lot of data through this bad boy via 3G, Wifi and sdcard.. now have 5 Roms loaded on it at once and switch with a single reboot.. simply amazing.
It will be a sad day when they hang on our Christmas tree though.
I both mine in September 2010 , from that time I burn two of them (sprint sponsored) . This is my the third one.

You know something else I love about this phone.. even tho it's EOL and no longer in production; it is still technologically superior to 95% of the current offerings available.
Yes it has a single-core processor, and has half the RAM and ROM space available compared to many top-notch phones today. Take for instance tho the screen size and resolution, and it's 8MP camera. Most current phones can't beat it.
The EVO is aging, but it can still hold it's own. And of the EVO family of devices, it's second to only the 3D when it comes to performance and features in my opinion.
There's just so much to rave about when it comes to our beloved classic EVOs. It really set the standard for top-of-the-line smartphones, and it set that standard very high. HTC forever has a fan in me.
So what is a 10 month old EVO actually worth today? Its an 8-9 on a scale of 1-10.
I gotta give props to the OG. I had mine for almost a year and gave it to my daughter when I got my 3D. She rocks it and absolutely loves it to death. It is still beast.

Unlocked they go for $300+ on eBay. $200+ otherwise. They're retaining their value nicely..

Yup, and that's about the extent of it too other than the higher DPI LCD. Here's a little screenshot I took directly from the HTC website.

And here's one I took from over at pdadb.net's comparer. 3D stats on left, 4G on right.
My Evo
I rather enjoy my Evo as well. Only reason i'm considering upgrading is to get dual core action. There are some good dev's making roms and stuff for this phone still too. I think this phone is going to get plenty of action for a long time
absolutely the "People's Smartphone"..for a long time during the Windows Mobile days I would switch phones endlessly. The Evo is the only phone to hold my attention for so long. For me, it's not just the device. It's the community. The tweaking. The endless hours of fun on the couch just goofing around with this thing. It's a cheap hobby. Major props to all the fantastic Devs that keep this thing alive and major props to the rest of us that keep this community one of the most active on XDA.
I agree... I had the Hero and I thought that HTC couldn't build a phone, then I got the Evo. It is a stable and powerful phone still. It will be interesting to see what comes up next. They will have to top the Evo, which will be pretty sweet phone.
All hail the legendary EVO LOL sure newer phones are better but none blew the phone world by storm like the EVO did when it first came out
I remember when one web site called it "knight in shining armor", and "iPhone killer"

+1 Have to agree. I also remember when they said we would get 4G Wimax and take all news releases and commercials from Sprint with a grain of salt.
Still best phone and service I have ever had.. bar none

I wouldn't say they failed, it's just a part of business. Consumers en masse want the "next best thing" you know how it goes. So you gotta fill business contracts, get people buying the new stuff, new stuff equals new accessories, new contracts etc etc.
It's a beast of a phone and can still hang with lots of devices today, it's just gotten a little long in the tooth. I honestly think after my daughter runs through my old Evo, my son will get it. I'm sure it will still be a winner in a year or two.Natural progression my man, it is what it is.
