Dead Pixel: To Swap or Not To Swap... - Nexus One General

I sold my t-mobile nexus one and bought an AT&T nexus one. It arrived today and I noticed a dead pixel on the lower right side of the screen. What do you think: should I swap it? The biggest thing holding me back is that the swap is a refurb. I just paid for a new phone and would hate to be stuck with one that shows signs of use. I'm looking for opinions. The dead pixel is one of the green subpixels, so it looks like a red pixel on a white background. I probably wouldn't have noticed it but I just had to go looking for them since it's a brand new phone, and now that I found it I don't know if I'll be able to ignore it.
Also, how long do I have to do the swap? 14 days or 1 year?

Usually refurbs are done really well, and you won't notice a thing. If you do swap again haha.

My bad, I got it confused with refund, since I just did that. Haha thanks for catching it, I might have worried him.

If it had a dead pixel out of the box, it's DOA (dead on arrival). Call HTC and tell them it's a DOA and that you want a NEW phone. That's what I did and they sent me a brand new one. But you have to do it asap.

How do you know they gave you a new one? Is it possible it's a refurb that looks as good as new?

Here's some pics using a plain white screen. You'll have to ignore the artifacts. The water spot looking thing is a reflection of the lens aperture of the camera and I don't know what the green spots are. I marked the dead pixel with an arrow.

When you do a DOA, they send you a whole new phone in the new box with all new accessories... and you send everything you originally got back to them.

Doesn't a screen like this needs atleast 5 dead pixels to get a new screen/phone?
or was it with stuck pixels?

OMG, i would not have spotted it in a million years, .... although when you spot it, you will always keep looking at it and it will be so annoying ... what happened OP? you replaced yours?
I actually read somewhere that you can fix the dead pixels by giving them "massages" (Lol) while rendering blinking colors on the background

Not if it had a dead pixel right out of the box. As a general rule, if you're still within the time where you can get a refund on the item, you can typically exchange it as well.

on capacitive screens? I don't think so

I'm gonna swap it next week. CS told me the only way to get a new one instead of a refurb is to do a DOA return (for which they'll waive the $45 restocking fee; I have 14 days) and buy a new one.
I've been getting significantly worse battery life than I did with my T-mobile nexus and "display" seems to be using most of it. I can't help but wonder if there's a connection...

Not because the screen is capacitive, but because the surface of the screen is glass, not the screen itself. The "flashing" trick by itself does not work on OLED screens AFAIK, only LCD.

I would send it back for a new one, or at least try. I'm picky about that crap... well, I used to be, until I became poor and couldn't afford to worry about the little things *sigh*

I returned two nexus one's (nexi?) for dead pixel within the first month. I called HTC directly.
THe first one was painless. I had a new phone the next day. The 2nd replacement was a pain in the ass.
It takes anywhere from 2-3 weeks for your initial phone to show up as received in HTC's system.

Heh, no I don't wear glasses. It's actually a little more noticeable in person, but only when you know to look for it. The camera didn't pick it up that well and when I resized the pic (it was huge!) the visibility went down some more. Maybe I should've never looked for dead pixels; I just didn't want to find one a couple months down the line and end up disappointed.

its a gloss white, so it will be no problem. it's not the rubber like the black one... it's just like the iphone white. i had a white iphone for 2 years and sold it 2 years later in mint condition. they stay white no problem.

no it wasn't "defective" per say, but it did have the common problems others reported.. poor battery (although i fixed that), battery door not flush, light leak, purple novatek screen. although i didn't mention any of that to best buy, they didn't care. just did a straight hardware swap, as it was within my 30 days. no restock fee either. much to my relief, the white is a glossy white, not a rubber white-- just like the iphone.

Just what I thought. I have the same battery door problem (and slight capacitative button leak) and it is driving me mad. I'm not sure if I should get a white exchange (easy) or try to get a black replacement (harder if BB doesn't think battery door is a problem).
How does the 50/50 black/white phone look? Is the back cover hard and glossy? Or soft and glossy? Did you just call BB and ask if they have the white version in stock 5 days before release?
Also does your white evo leak light at the bottom trim? At the bottom of the actual screen, between the capacitative buttons and screen?

only thing is, the only way they could do the swap was refunding the original phone back to my CC, and then I had to pay for the new one. Since CC refunds aren't instant, i needed to have the cash to do the swap. it will all balance out in 48 hours though. they warned me this might happen when i pre-ordered.

So I called T-Mobile on Monday to get a replacement phone since my current G2 already has some "dust" in the screen - this after a week or so of usage only.... Long story cut short I received my replacement phone today and here's what I got:

I got that exact same thing with my first phone and then got it replaced with a looser hinged one. My brother bought one too and he has a dead pixel too. Looks like bad luck is not the answer.
I'm on my third G2 unit, arriving Friday or Saturday. The previous two have had dead pixels. I swear, if I open up this package and find another phone with dead pixels I'm gonna scream.

3rd?! Damn I guess I'm not the only one around here that needed their G2 replaced... On another note, while I was away I turned on the replacement phone again for **** & giggles and I noticed an even worse issue...
The screen displayed white's in a yellowish color, I sat it next to my current G2 and it was a night & day difference ...
WTF is going on HTC/T-Mobile?! Do you really wanna send defected products to your customers?
I think its more t mobile than htc. Here is why. I had two vibrants both returned with in buyers remorse both with issues. Now I'm waiting on my second g2. Looks like tmobile qc sucks.

if your only problems are the dead pixels, I would download a strobe light app (one of the ones that flashes colors on your screen very rapidly) and turn it on its highest speed.
Sometimes the pixels might be stuck, not dead, and rapidly changing the colors on the screen can sometimes make pixels un-stuck.
Might want to give it a try.

Good idea, the only draw back is what I just posted... the screen is not displaying the colors accuretly, its showing white with a tint of yellow. Why is this problem? Because my 1st G2 actually displays white as whites not yellowish white.
Oh well, another waiting game for a new G2.

My second G2 has dead pixels. Lame.
I've gone through 4 G2's now. First had random reboots, second had an extremely loose wobbly screen, third had dead pixels, and now the fourth is working well, but of course I dropped it from 2 feet on the second day of having it and made a nick in the soft touch plastic.
I can't win with this phone so far...

Seriously, I was getting pissed. The T-Mobile store employees were getting pissed at me too. But if I'm paying off contract for this phone, there better be no issues. Now I'm just struggling with that chip in the plastic I made. It's pretty small but knowing it's there is killing me.

I got the Nexus 4 in first ever batch luckily and it had a Camera rattling issue stronger than most other people's (see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78EGLJcPuoA)
I got that phone replaced and my replacement has been in my hands for 19 days now. This one has a different set of problems though. The first is that the camera rattle still isn't fixed, but it isn't nearly as bad as my original one. The second problem is that I've noticed a pixel that is a few shades lighter than the rest, but it can only be noticed on angles - looking straight on to the device doesn't show anything.
So what do you think? Should I ask for another replacement and see if 3rd times the charm?

Im on my second phone and both of them has had that same problem in different areas, and drives me crazy so Im sending it back for a third. Is this common spread issue with other peoples? I think most all of them have it? I have very good vision so that doesn't help seeing these artifacts ether!
I have a feeling that these phones are just basically being transferred amongst you guys?
Most people are perfectly happy with their phone, a lot of people keep getting bad phones RMA after RMA , plus they don't even have enough phone to ship to people who already paid for it so... replacement phones must come from somewhere else, isn't it?
Will call them up today then.. what's also weird is that my money was returned for the replacement cost, but according to google wallet the transaction is still pending. Anyone know how long the RMA transaction takes to finally clear? I don't like the idea that they may take out $400 from an account that doesn't usually have $400 in it. #australian
EDIT: Done. Took 5 minutes on the phone and they said they'd get it sorted out straight away for me. Still waiting on the email with instructions but it sounds like it will be all sweet
I would've requested a replacement right away.
So it took 3 phone calls but I've finally got a second replacement on the way.
Hung up on them the first time
Called back and the rep said that they have to forward my information onto a specialist, they can't hand out free replacements anymore, then he never did.
Called back a day later and the lady helped me out in a few minutes, got my email with instructions from the specialist within half an hour
so is this an isolated issue? the last two have had this on mine? waiting for the 3rd and i have a feeling it will also have this defect.
My nexus 4 has the camera rattle. My first 1 also had the camera rattle (so I think it's just the design) My Galaxy S2 (ATT) also rattled with the camera some, just not as much. It's how the cameras are made.
Having a single pixel kind of sucks on a screen so small, but with so many pixels, even monitor and tv makers say you need so many dead pixels in a sized area to warrant a replacement. This is a 720p display and has as many pixels as some 40" televisions
A faulty pixel? C'mon, that's no reason to replace your phone. Almost every screen has at least one faulty pixel. And I believe almost everyone has the camera rattle, just like almost everyone has the speaker buzz (which you don't hear anyway unless you hug your phone with your ears).
My advice, just ignore it and learn to live with it. No device is perfect. No phone, no TV, no monitor. In a few weeks/months you will get scratches that are far worse than one faulty pixel, and you will have to live with that too.

As a previous poster mentioned, it is peculiar that some users are RMAing 3 or more times whereas most users have perfect devices.
I think it probably says more about the user than the way that device is built or how RMAs are processed.

so are you saying that we are picky? or we did that to the display? Im not new to technology I know nothing is perfect, I dont really care about the rattle. However I like to look at a nice screen on a small screen with stuck pixels it stands out and bugs the crap out of me because thats what my eyes go to. I have had smartphones from windows phones when they first came out to the first android G1, ipad, ipod touch, whatever I can live with most defects just not pixels ones. So I was trying to gauge whether most everyone has stuck pixels or just a few.

Don't know if it's a rare coincidence or all units are all having some form of defects.
Getting my 4th one soon and I'm already worried.
I reckon that T mobile got there hands on a beta batch that have defects
I seriously doubt it is dust, as the AMOLED technology doesn't allow dust to penetrate between the screen and the display as they are one. So it could be dead pixels.
It is possible that during manufacturing some dust penetrated under the digitizer before it got glued to the screen. Return it until you get a perfect unit.

Mine has a small black speck on the left in-between the aluminum frame and the glass. It's only visible if I'm looking at the screen straight on or tilt it. It kind of drives me crazy when I remember it's there, I don't know if I should send it back.
Well 4th time's the charm right? That actually looks like a dead pixel... if the 4th one screws up, what will be your options? Keep asking for one until they give you one that is finally good?

Doubt it. When placing the screen, as far as I know, they do it in dust-free environment so it isn't really possible any particles to go between the screen and the display.
Look at all the pictures - it doesn't look like dust, it looks like dead pixels. And having dead pixels is normal on every phone - yeah, could be annoying but that's about it. I think Samsung has a policy that they will return your phone if and only if you have a certain amount of dead pixels (at least it was like that during the time of the S4). Hence if you have a single dead pixel chances are that they are gonna tell you to f**k off
It's definitely not a dead pixel. I looked at the phone at a wide angle and is definitely a spec of black dust.

Because everything in the display + the outer glass is glued together in a dust-free environment.

But that dust-free environment is not 100% dust-proof. Just like everything in life.
I've got my 4th one today. The screen is clear of any particles. Although. Samsung yet has to answer for the pink hue issue on most of their displays on smartphone.

Shoddy QA needs to be dealt with at a corporate level and the only way to do that is if everyone sends their devices back when they have crap like that happening!

How the heck is a environment considered 100% dust-proof anyway? Having twenty thousand ionizers around the entrances to the room?
Dust exists everywhere, presumably they get the screens from the factory that makes them.. There is guaranteed to be dust in that factory.. They then open up the screen packaging to get access to them.. Sure enough that dust free room is now containing dust.
It's like a mysophobic nightmare.

Mine has a spec right in the middle of the screen, definitely not a dead pixel, I'm probably going to call and get a replacement
Guys, Just received my Samsung Galaxy s6 black 32gb sim free today from Amazon UK.
Noticed a large spec of dust under screen too getting a replacement unit tomorrow.
The quality control on this phone is just as bad as Apple iPhone 6 hope I don't get banned on Amazon for returning too many phone's due to Samsung shoddy quality control team.

long version of the problem
Just got my phone after screen replacement and I have noticed a spec of dust under the glass and the samsung logo is not straight. The spacing around the the logo is to the left. That is not all, you can see the glue under the glass there are waves of discoloration from the glue used. I have told the official service the problem of the new screen they just put on my phone and they told me the screen is send from samsung as it is. WE can not change it again ! WHAT ?! They wanna tell me that if they change the screen once because of manufacturing fault (the original screen was not responding to touch and it was yellow-ish) they cant change it again ?! Please someone explain the laws of warranty
You can see everything on the images except the waves that are very difficult to photograph.
The good old dyson helped me in the past sucking out dust on my iphone

The person mentioning about impossible presence of dust in a so called "dust-free" environment (they are actually called clean rooms) is either an idiot or uninformed. Contamination is not impossible. And many factories across the globe have rather questionable clean rooms, you should start doing some research.

Faint blue dot on my screen.

I was holding my phone and just messing around with it while watching a movie earlier, and I pushed on the screen a bit (Stupid, I know). I don't know if that was the cause but there is now a faint blue dot probably ~1/2 cm in diameter in the middle of my screen. There's also a much smaller and more faint red dot a ways below that and to the left. It's definitely an issue with the LCD. It's not extremely noticeable, but when that area of the screen is black/grey it's enough to bug me. If I let it sit overnight will this just go away, or did I just screw myself? Will I have to get a replacement? I should still have a few days of warranty left so hopefully this is covered if that is the case.
Stuck pixel? Download the LCD test app and you'll be able to see clearly when it changes colors. I'd return it.

I don't think it's dead pixels. I downloaded the app and it only appears on black/dark grey and it stays the same regardless of brightness. I might have to return it and that sucks I can't be without a phone for even just a few days.

From what I hear, if you give your phone to motorola for warrenty, they will let you use your current phone until your new one arrives.
Hardly a warranty issue here according to the OP's own statement. It's like saying I jabbed a pencil into a light bulb and it broke now I want a warranty replacement? Another reason prices keep rising.

What was the resolution as my phone has the same issue and still within 14 days and I don't have a backup phone.
This issue just showed up on my wife's MXPE. She is notoriously gentle on her phone and claims that it is not possible to be related to damage. A quick web search found several others with the same claim. Has anyone heard of a resolution?

My son's phone has the same thing. I just got off the phone with Motorola, and they are going to replace it. You have two options, the first is to send in the phone and they will send you a new one. The other option is called Advance Exchange. They will send you the new one, and when you receive it, you send back the old one. If you do the advance exchange they will place a $500 hold on your credit card, to insure you send the old one back, and there is a $24.99 fee.

Something is possibly distressing the back of the LCD screen (sorta like when one presses on a laptop screen). I have read other threads claiming too tight of phone cases warping the LCD to over tightened internal hardware component screws twisting the frame thus warping the LCD (i.e. after a repair job). The best one I read and most believable is...say your battery goes defective, bad charging practices, wrong voltage or the battery just getting old. Lithium batteries have a tendency to puff up and start bulging. Now lets say there is an internal component or a screw head under the LCD right where the blue dot is (small objects producing small dot, blunter components producing larger muted discolorations). I suspect different pressures might cause different colors (red, yellow, green etc.) too due to greater pressures as battery gets older and inflates more? So maybe it's not a defective LCD, but defective engineering and bad design practices.
