Just got a call from Best Buy that my white Evo is in at Best Buy. Taking back the black 002. woohooo! 5 days early i'll be posting pics as well as info on if it came with the OTA update soon.
edit: got it!!
no OTA update
hw 003
manuf date: 6/25/10
screen: epson (cannot believe how purple my 002 was, i had no idea until i compared them side by side)
also, no reason to un-root your phone. they didn't even look at mine, not even to inspect it for damage.
i still have the camera protector film on...

its a gloss white, so it will be no problem. it's not the rubber like the black one... it's just like the iphone white. i had a white iphone for 2 years and sold it 2 years later in mint condition. they stay white no problem.
attached pic of my 2 year old iphone in white.. for proof

no it wasn't "defective" per say, but it did have the common problems others reported.. poor battery (although i fixed that), battery door not flush, light leak, purple novatek screen. although i didn't mention any of that to best buy, they didn't care. just did a straight hardware swap, as it was within my 30 days. no restock fee either. much to my relief, the white is a glossy white, not a rubber white-- just like the iphone.

Just what I thought. I have the same battery door problem (and slight capacitative button leak) and it is driving me mad. I'm not sure if I should get a white exchange (easy) or try to get a black replacement (harder if BB doesn't think battery door is a problem).
How does the 50/50 black/white phone look? Is the back cover hard and glossy? Or soft and glossy? Did you just call BB and ask if they have the white version in stock 5 days before release?
Also does your white evo leak light at the bottom trim? At the bottom of the actual screen, between the capacitative buttons and screen?

-hard and glossy.. see above pics
-i pre-ordered the white one about 2 weeks ago
-no light leak around the bottom. there is some on the lower right side however (slight) i've yet to have a touch screen phone that didn't have some light leak though.
only thing is, the only way they could do the swap was refunding the original phone back to my CC, and then I had to pay for the new one. Since CC refunds aren't instant, i needed to have the cash to do the swap. it will all balance out in 48 hours though. they warned me this might happen when i pre-ordered.

As far as keeping it clean, really?? I have a white ipod thats been around for ages and still looks great, hint: 1. wash hands before picking up phone 2. try and keep phone out of dirt and mud 3. possibly do a serch here for the new thread I'll be starting in the dev forum, I'm going to title it "IDIOT PROOF method to keep your new whit Evo looking all nice and sparkly"

I sold my t-mobile nexus one and bought an AT&T nexus one. It arrived today and I noticed a dead pixel on the lower right side of the screen. What do you think: should I swap it? The biggest thing holding me back is that the swap is a refurb. I just paid for a new phone and would hate to be stuck with one that shows signs of use. I'm looking for opinions. The dead pixel is one of the green subpixels, so it looks like a red pixel on a white background. I probably wouldn't have noticed it but I just had to go looking for them since it's a brand new phone, and now that I found it I don't know if I'll be able to ignore it.
Also, how long do I have to do the swap? 14 days or 1 year?
14 Days here, 30 days in California. GET GOING!
Usually refurbs are done really well, and you won't notice a thing. If you do swap again haha.

Negative.
14 days (30 in California) is for a full refund
365 days for warranty repair
OP: I'd wait unless it's really bad.
Can you take a picture of your N1 with another camera?
My bad, I got it confused with refund, since I just did that. Haha thanks for catching it, I might have worried him.
If it had a dead pixel out of the box, it's DOA (dead on arrival). Call HTC and tell them it's a DOA and that you want a NEW phone. That's what I did and they sent me a brand new one. But you have to do it asap.

How do you know they gave you a new one? Is it possible it's a refurb that looks as good as new?
Here's some pics using a plain white screen. You'll have to ignore the artifacts. The water spot looking thing is a reflection of the lens aperture of the camera and I don't know what the green spots are. I marked the dead pixel with an arrow.

When you do a DOA, they send you a whole new phone in the new box with all new accessories... and you send everything you originally got back to them.
Doesn't a screen like this needs atleast 5 dead pixels to get a new screen/phone?
or was it with stuck pixels?

I actually read somewhere that you can fix the dead pixels by giving them "massages" (Lol) while rendering blinking colors on the background

Not if it had a dead pixel right out of the box. As a general rule, if you're still within the time where you can get a refund on the item, you can typically exchange it as well.

on capacitive screens? I don't think so
I'm gonna swap it next week. CS told me the only way to get a new one instead of a refurb is to do a DOA return (for which they'll waive the $45 restocking fee; I have 14 days) and buy a new one.
I've been getting significantly worse battery life than I did with my T-mobile nexus and "display" seems to be using most of it. I can't help but wonder if there's a connection...

Not because the screen is capacitive, but because the surface of the screen is glass, not the screen itself. The "flashing" trick by itself does not work on OLED screens AFAIK, only LCD.

OP, do you wear glasses? If so, who is your eye doctor... I need to get the hookup on the specs that allowed you to spot that small of a detail! lol
I would send it back for a new one, or at least try. I'm picky about that crap... well, I used to be, until I became poor and couldn't afford to worry about the little things *sigh*
I returned two nexus one's (nexi?) for dead pixel within the first month. I called HTC directly.
THe first one was painless. I had a new phone the next day. The 2nd replacement was a pain in the ass.
It takes anywhere from 2-3 weeks for your initial phone to show up as received in HTC's system.

Heh, no I don't wear glasses. It's actually a little more noticeable in person, but only when you know to look for it. The camera didn't pick it up that well and when I resized the pic (it was huge!) the visibility went down some more. Maybe I should've never looked for dead pixels; I just didn't want to find one a couple months down the line and end up disappointed.

What's the deal with the two tone? Is it difficult to make the front white, too? And it's not only HTC that's guilty of this:
What is with the two tone? Is there actually some technical reason they can't use white on the front? I wouldn't mind a white phone at all if it weren't for this.
Eh. People just want different colors. The funny part is that these are the same people who will buy ****ty silicone cases and cover up their white back, so you can't even tell what color the stupid pos is.
Bottom line: People like options.

Exactly what I thought when I first saw the white one.
I also want the answer to this. I think its mainly regarding money saving during production.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
As I understand it, the white evo was originally a Best Buy exclusive. So, ultimately it was probably them who saw the two-tone and were like "well, I guess that's good enough. sold!"
As for why it's just the back and not the whole thing, I'd bet it's cost. This way they can keep all the expensive parts the same (including the screen bezel) and just repaint the back half of the phone. That part is just plastic, there's nothing really fancy like a screen attached to it.
I have one of the "two-tone" evos and actually like the look. Only thing I wish is that still had the rubberized coating on it like the black ones have.
F***ing. Hideous.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks so.
Not a matter of being difficult, but a matter of cost. Perhaps the pieces that are indeed different in color is sufficiently cheaper for manufactures to see it worthwhile to invest in.

It's interesting that they don't make a fully white one and just charge more for it, though, since people would most likely pay for it.
i have a white evo... i like to be different from the croud.. I also have a case for protection.
case for potection.
some of the white shows through... and looks good.
but if I want .. i do take it off. and it looks nice with the white.
why not the a white front?
1. it could be cost savings.
2. it might also be for the ladies and men that use makeup... it would make white face phone look dirty.
The screen would have to be "black" when off anyways, so I think it looks better to have the screen surround black (including the softkeys).
And to change the front bezel to white they would've had to make the power and volume buttons white, too. All comes down to money spent versus money made selling options.
White on the front bezel is annoying for viewing. (contrast vs. the screen, especially when viewing movies/etc)
-m
I have to say, I kinda like the feel of the white evo. My wife has one and it is completely smooth on the back. Unlike my older black evo that has a textured feel to it.
I have the white Evo, the reason for it was it's a best buy exclusive. Nothing about the phone is different from the black one. It's just different, and i don't use a case to cover it up. However, i wish i got the black one because of what it's made out of the white is smooth and i got cracks from taking the cover off already

It doesn't make much sense, I mean...they've had all white phones before.
But then again, I don't understand the concept of white on anything of this nature.
Whether it be a white phone or a white car etc.
It just gets too dirty and marked up and looks like **** over time.
Not a fan of the white, but my wife and I got our evos at the same time and she got white so we could tell the phones apart.

I got my white Evo at radio shack during the $99 dollar special. It was the last one in the store. They actually apologized for not having black. I didn't mind.

Any one that owns a white or black model can you give me some insight. Which one looks better overall? More prone to scratches? stuff like that.
The white one also seems more special for some reason but I absolutely hate how the frame around the screen is white, it looks like it doesn't match even the new white iphone4 is like that I wish it was more like the 3gs how the front was black.
I choose the white model, 2 main reasons, i believe that the white is more scratch proof (or at least less noticeable) and it will be probably a little more exclusive.
I had previously preordered the black one and when I went to the roadshow to collect it I saw the white version on display and found that it looks nicer.
Since I can't change the preordered colour there and then I'm using the black version now but if I had a chance to choose again I'll definitely take the white one.
The black version looks like any other black coloured phones but the white version gives me a feeling of higher quality and more premium looking. I think it's because the white coating is really very nicely done.
Though like all other white gadgets you'll have to be more careful in handling it as any scratches etc will be more obvious on the white surface.
Do you guys know if they sell the back covers separate some where?
If they had made the white model purely white (including screen borders), I might have considered it. I always find the contrast with the screen border vs the rest of the phone to be a bit strange.

I never buy white computer gadgets.
Old white PC's looked rubbish. (well, whitish)
White Xbox looked rubbish.
White iphone will look rubbish.
White Xperia Play looks rubbish.
Heck, white cars even look rubbish.
Just my opinion of course
Im not a big fan of white...
Black. White is too look at me'ish. IMO
White does look very nice though.
I do wish they used rubber coating on the back plate though, stupid SE. If any phone needed to have a non slip surface it's this one.
I hope a 3rd party releases rubbery back plates.
got the white it's perfect for cleaning and scratch proof / dust proof

I spoke to Nergi. They took some pics of a unit they had. The black on the front is there, not white. So the glass around the screen is black. This must have been a mock-up shot of the white.

Did they say for sure that they would not ge getting the white one? At first, I thought that the white was exclusive to O2 but you can now get an unlocked one with the USA AT&T 3G 850/1900 bands. Probably the Canadian version. Maybe Verizon will offer later down the road.
And there goes the question I just can't find an answer to for now.
First of all: I own a white N5 (and its' cover will be replaced by a black one soon enough because the nexus logo is partly peeled off)
Now I'm torn whether I should go with the white or the sand Nexus 9...
As far as the pictures go, I prefer the white one for its' more metallic look on the alumunium frame whereas the sand-colored one is way darker there. Same applies to the nexus logo.
But the sandy back has kind of a premium look which (imho) very slightly surpasses the white one as far as that goes...
Then again there are no legit pictures of the sand version yet...I don't quite trust those rendered pics which can be found in the playstore and the white one looked good in those hands-on videos.
Any advices or opinions that could help me make the decision ?
EDIT: Oh and btw I will get the keyboard folio aswell
EDIT2: Probably this is in the wrong subforum, if that is the case, just move it, ty
First, I ordered the white one, but then Artem from AndroidPolice told me about his negative experiences with the white N7 and N5, so I decided to cancel the white one and ordered the black, even if I like the look of the white one a little bit more.

Thx for your opinion
Could you elaborate a bit more what Artem told you about the white version?
I myself - as mentioned above - experienced some problems with the backcover as it changed its color at some spots (maybe my jeans?) and the logo is partly peeled off. Which is why I ordered a replacement backcover.
My choice has always been SAND, sadly I had to settle with white because I'm not willing to wait in lingering agony until they decide to have the Sand option available for shipping.
I ordered white. My galaxy tab pro LIVES in a folio case, which i figure will be the case with this one. Hopefully that will keep it primo for a good long while.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
I want sand, but who knows when that will be available, and I'm not keen on waiting since I'm still bumbling around on a 2012 N7.
I like the sand and plan on waiting to purchase so later release isn't a problem. My five other nexus devices have been 16 GB which has never been an issue so I'm not sure about needing 32gb. It occurred to me that I always keep my tablets in a case so what difference does it make to me what color it is. They're all black on the front.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Initially I wanted the Sand version, I wrote to HTC here in Denmark, and they said that it might not be available here at all.
So then I ordered the White through HTC, but after a lot of writting back and forth they finally admitted that they were gonna ship the tablet a month later than Google Play.
So I canceled the order and ordered it from Google Play, which only had the black version.. So, guess I'm getting it in black

Don't worry me I always keep my gadgets clean. Like to look after my gear.
Well yeah...I'm also curious in what way the material of the black and the brighter colors will differ...
Read an article some hours ago that was some kind of guide concerning the color question on the Nexus 5.
I'd say the safest one would be black but that's a bit too casual for my likings
And that keyboard folio should protect my tablet enough not to get dirty.
Right now I tend towards ordering a white one but those choices are killing me :crying:
I want to see how the Sand one looks like up front but it won't be available on launch, there's no time frame on it as well . So will be buying the White version. Black looks standard, doesn't have that fresh new appeal to it.
Well, I'm thinking that, if I really wanna get it in an other color, I should be able to buy a replacement back cover in eg. sand, and then I don't have to wait for sand to be released. Instead I can enjoy my Nexus 9 earlier and don't have to care about banging up the back cover

I just preordered the white 32gb version from amazon, should be getting it november 4th thanks to prime. black seems a little bit less premium/spectacular (IMHO!) and prone to fingerprints whereas sand is not available.
I think you can't go wrong with any color though, can't wait to get my hands on the device :victory:
I've gone with black as it hides a multitude of stains. I work on my car a lot and also like to cook which means I often have some sort of oil on my hands.
32gb, WiFi, currently listed as IN STOCK ...
I'm interested to see reports of the build quality on this one.

Oh, I didn't realize it was the sand color. I have been following that thread closely. Will go back. Originally, I thought I wanted the sand (32GB), but then the white appealed to me. I wasn't in a hurry. Then the reports--oh my. I played with a 16BG at two Best Buys and had to use my fingernail to push any of the buttons. I do not like the buttons on my N7 FHD, so was hoping for better. (I returned my first N7 from release date and repurchased about 4 months later getting a better tablet.) At this point, I'm not ready to buy. Even worse, I borrowed my son's ipad 3 (which I replaced with a Samsung Galaxy TabPro 12.2), jailbroke it and love the screen and form factor, but it's a little too big and even jailbroken, it doesn't give me what I want. (like, how many apps does it take to replicate Aldiko premium on ios?)
velocity90 - you have a sand, in hand, already?
Mine (still on its way) is HT4CVJT ...
Ow my bad, no black here.

Can't wait for your (and others') reports. I still like the white because of no black metal trim, but if sand pans out as a generally more dependable build, then it would not be an issue.

Well, it's here ... no lightbleed, no button issues, seems perfectly fine.
It's coded HT4CVJT ... for anyone that's interested, this is what the sand colored back looks like ...

You have pics of the boot screen? When the bleed is noticeable
Been trying to take one ... it's very very dark and the shots don't come out ...
There's a tiny bit of glow around all four edges during boot, with a very faint purple background ... both very typical of an edge lit LCD screen in full black ...
There is NONE of the splotchy glow seen in other pictures.
It would make sense that the sand versions, being brand new, have all the latest engineering improvements ...

If what you say is true, it might be finally time to pull the trigger on the Nexus 9... The sand doesn't look half bad either. Should I wait for MWC? Bah! I just don't know.
If you could take a picture of the front you would be doing us all a huge favor! :good:
Also, how is the texture of the back cover?
Try this ... Remember this is in a dead black room, with a super sensitive camera sensor which is going to bloom on ANY light source ...
To the eye, there is basically nothing noticeable outside of the purple back-glow of the LCD screen (which is normal for an edge-lit LCD screen showing black in a dark room).
This isn't a 1500 buck Samsung TV hanging on a wall.

My black 32g also is HT4C, I'm perfectly happy. Only bleed around the edges. Personally it doesn't bother me

Could anyone post a picture of the power and volume button?
Thanks in advance!
Does anyone know if the trim on the Sand version is chrome like the white model, or dark like the indigo black one?

I read a description somewhere that said dark which is why I switched to wanting the white. I'd like it verified, though, by someone with the tablet.

Trim (if by trim, you mean the edges) on the Sand color is dark.
It stands out very nicely against the gold/tan color of the back.

Thank you. Yes, I think we are referring to the band around the edge (like N7, 1st gen if you are familiar with it).
It also looks (Play Store pics) like the "nexus" shows through darker on the sand than on the white.
