Apple should be scared - Hero CDMA General

http://www.businessweek.com/news/20...reviews-of-its-first-wimax-network-phone.html
I just read this and it made me laugh. Just thought I would share

why should apple be scared? they make cellphones, if its a problem to them (which i doubt because apple has dedicated fans who use thier ****ware anyway) then they will make a CDMA version of thier phone and be done with it. The only people who should be afraid is T-mobile and ATT. Apple is just a cell phone provider who is making money regardless of what 4g does.

Lets just say that things I have heard.....that might happen for sprint and likely for verizon.

apple should not make cellphones. keep on making em macs and make em better. don't bring your proprietary exclusiveness to cellphones to make them "unique"... as far as i know the ipad doesn't have flash and the iphone still has a 3mp camera... HTC all the way.open source! android babaaay! Down with apple unless we start getting viruses on our handsets...

i have a mac but i can never get an iphone because they suck
i am just amazed with android because of all the stuff you can do with it.
and sprint and htc have some nice phones coming out this summer so its gonna be awesome

Viruses? My friend we are running linux.
Now when someone finds a way to boot BackTrack distro on an android phone we might need to be a little concerned...

I think it's ironic that the same forces that compelled people to choose apple as an alternative, now compel people away from the iphone. Apple created this imbalance with it's GSM only approach, until market share forced it to change.
Jobs (40:15) "Behold now the behemoth, which I made with thee;"

The only drawback to this new super phone from Sprint is that it will still be stuck on the old, outdated CDMA network.
Which allows Apple to continue to punch away at the one soft spot in the armor, which is lack of "network multitasking".

what about "network multitasking"? Evo should be able to do 4g and voice at the same time.

Virus's are targeted for the mass of Morons, some Android owners fall into this catagory. Once they grow as large in numbers as Windows PC's, we will have viruses. Why waste your time writing a virus for 10 computers when you can write one for 100.

It will be years before we ever see CDMA go by the way side. Bad part about setting up an infrastructure, once it's dated you have to have the ability to roll out a new one.

Well actually, according to Engadget:
"Interestingly, it sounds like concurrent data and voice use might be possible for the first time on CDMA carrier in this way (killing AT&T's well-advertised differentiator)"
-link

Sprints 4G network (WiMax) can do voice and data simultaneously, and according to Clear(wire), the technology for WiMax can easily be upgraded to LTE with little to no effort. So in a way, Sprint can have their 4G speeds now, and upgrade to LTE in the future if necessary. They are just jumping to WiMax now in the hopes of getting people to switch now and get faster speeds rather than wait for Verizon and AT&T's LTE networks to get up and running in a year or 2. Of course the term 4G has not been completely finalized in regards to speeds and to all of the Carriers, the tern 4G means 4th generation of speeds, not the 4G certification of a speed that has been recognized and certified yet.

Ahhh, yea that will definitely shut down the Apple argument about concurrent voice and data then.

Never once found myself in those Apple style scenarios.
Now if I was downloading a huge file & a phone call interrupted it, ok that would be attractive but that's not often an occurrence. The ability is not a deal breaker or maker for me.

No Data and Voice simultaneously

Is this a deal breaker for anyone?
http://androidcommunity.com/sprint-evo-4g-wont-do-simultaneous-voice-data-20100329/
I think it's only a big deal in Iphone commercials
Well I guess 4g data and 3g talk is a go not sure how to change the thread title. PM me if you know how.
if this holds up it is not cool. Ive been drooling over this phone for 2 weeks, but with this question in the back of my mind the whole time. ive been an AT&T customer for 5+ years and didnt even know this was an issue untill AT&T came out with the commercials a while back. I was like "what, not everyone can do this??"
I read online that this is not a hardware limitation and could be fixed with a future OTA update.
http://www.androidcentral.com/sprint-clarifies-voice-data-evo-4g
Voice + Wifi = Yes.
Voice + 3G = No.
Voice + 4G = TBD, testing.
I actually never realized I couldn't use data while talking until those commercials ... and I've been using Sprint pda-phones since 2001.
Sprint tweeted that it's still testing so it's possible by the time the phone is released we will be able to do both. But frankly 4g is in so few areas that I doubt it's going to make much of a diff to most ppl. It will be good for the hotspot feature.
can someone name a use for using data while on a call?
I've use Voice and Data at the same time all the time on my G1. I'm either talking to my wife and she needs directions or a phone number and I look it up using Google Maps. Really easy and fast.
Yea AT&T isn't the only one that can do it. I do it on T-Mobile all the time with my Nexus, used to do it with my G1. I'm on a phone call and I get a text. I'm on the phone and I can just launch my browser or Google Maps or Gmail right away and do whatever I want, pretty cool.
Actually Sprint and Verizon can do SMS and voice at the same time too. It's voice and data that they can't handle.
I guess it helps working in the tech industry, if I ever get a call I'm usually around a computer which is faster for looking stuff up anyways...

REALLY? many uses but here is one: my phone is tethered to my laptop. a phone call comes in i am in the middle of sending out emails to clients i can talk and do that at the same time but on sprint you cant. basically tons of reason when im on the phone with someone and a topic comes up i may Google it while we are talking. What do you use your phone for?
You must be a very busy person. Emailing while talking to people at the same time, also that the email must go out immediately during the call instead of after. Must be like a CEO of some company or something =P
I guess I must be getting old, I use my phone for talking on the phone, and when I'm not talking I'm doing the other stuff on it... I'm sorry if that was surprising to hear I was questioning what others are doing while they're talking.
I somewhat laughed at the att&t commercial when a person popped out and downloaded monopoly while talking to someone... are people so uninteresting that you must entertain yourself while you talk to them? And why didn't he just download it before... I don't know, it just seems like a gimmick to me, I can honestly say I've never wished I had that functionality. I guess that's why I asked.
its not a deal breaker for me but honestly if I'm in the car I tend to turn gps on just because I'm a nerd and like looking at new places or not having to find a way looking at traffic and such. and when I'm going to new places I tend to GPS it and not being able to make or take a call when I'm on the road with a chance of losing my barrings is well, bad.
I just realized, idk if other phones use data and voice for video calling but with it being a front facing camera for video calling, I would think they will def offer the data+voice.

yes i do run two companies and i am on the phone for an hour at a time during conference calls that can get boring.
Not even a bother for me and has never been in my 11 yrs on Sprint.
I have a Verizon Blackberry as my company phone and AT&T as a personal phone. The only time not being able to use data and voice at the same time is waiting for an email to send or recieve. It has never been a big issue for me. Annoying sometimes.

Anyone that likes to do 3 things at once, like myself, would really like this feature!!! I assume Sprint will realize that this is important to people and enable it on 4G only. Technically / theoretically no barrier exists and the hardware and software could be designed to support this feature going forward... I guess we need to wait to see what Sprint decides to do. Please don't be penny wise & pound foolish Sprint, yeah I know... wishful thinking!!!!
It's a big difference between GSM and CDMA, GSM can do voice + data, but CDMA can not

I thought I was the only geek doing this.
I don't need for my phone to be able to do both at the same time but, heck, I joined this forum to make my phone do things it wasn't originally supposed to be able to do.
Since it was mentioned that this is a software issue, it would only be a matter of time before someone could get it to work.

Irony is asking for wireless tether access to my N1 to setup his iPhone4

Coworker just did this after unboxing his iPhone 4. He asked for access (with a straight face) to my Nexus One's wireless tether for internet.
Apparently needed it to setup and configure his iPhone.
Isn't that like the French soliciting the Germans for political advice?

he also tried to come in and boast about how superior his phone was, so we compared hd youtube feeds. Unfortunately his iPhone4 could not get a high quality feed over 3g (or he didn't know how to). I showed pity and let him tether again off the N1, but even then, the N1 was much brighter. (I failed to point out i maxed out my brightness via a widget, and he didn't max out his brightness, but all's fair in love and mobile war.)
A few more discussions about bandwith and tethering costs on iPhone 4 and he slumped away duly shamed. Now he's considering returning his phone, but I believe the iSheep is too strong.
Spoke with another iPhone 4 guy this weekend whose girlfriend just got an EVO. He says he's keeping the iPhone for two reasons.
Lot more games on iPhone 4. I can't argue with that for now.
He's stuck in a contract and had to replace his cracked iphone 3gs (he left it on top of his car. It had a sticky rubber case so didn't pop off until he was speeding down the road to predictable results. The picture is brutal. On the other hand, it was still able to sync to iTunes, so kudos to Apple for that.)

Android on hd2, just a bandaid?

Android is cool and all... But i still think it doesnt cover the problems of this phones terrible reception problem..
Even at best we dont get reception in lots of places.
Correct me if i'm wrong but it really seems like the only solution here is get out of my contract and switch providers...
3g does not work in 90% of my common locations, edge is useless, switching from edge to 3g kills whatever i had running.
The new darkstone froyo doesnt even have a way to force 3g..
Spending hours a week trying to make a phone i pay a lot of money for seems like a huge rip off and waiste of time.
ps: in places where i get zero reception , the evo has full bars. Have tested it with my friends hd2's and evo's... we all got ripped off sorry to say.
LOL, u are going to piss off a lot of people man... Why would you diss Darkstone!?!?!?! with ur "The new darkstone froyo doesnt even have a way to force 3g.." DUDE!!! Do you even know how much time and effort these guys put in??
Why would you complain about ur HD2 on this section! Take ur complains to HTC forum..
If you dont like ur HD2, sell it.. I have no reception errors, and most likely its ur provider not having enough 3G antenna's where ur from...
oh and just to let you know, the hd2 was NEVER designed to run Android. The fact that you even have it is amazing. stop complaining.

That would be a problem with 3, But chin up, Soon you will get better signal with the tmobile and orange merger as part of the deal being allowed is the 3 get to use there masts

I bet this guy has Orange, I have the same issue but would never trade my HD2 because of it
Out here I get H whenever I use data and then my rom throws it into 3G the rest of the time. I think it saves power? But yeah I got zero issues with my service. Hell I downloaded a 2 gig torrent just to watch some cartoons well I was in a car ride. So maybe your just holding the phone wrong, or need a bumper...I had to say it.
ok comparing the hd2's signal to the evo's is ridiculous. theyre on 2 completely DIFFERENT networks. sprints signal may be stronger than t-mobile's in your area, that is in NO way the phone's fault. for me its the opposite, when i had sprint i was lucky to get 2 bars, with t-mo i get full bars & H most of the time. dont diss the poor phone when the network is at fault, lol...
must....resist...urge..to..flame... lol yes because the hd 2 and darkstone are completely responsible for tmobiles epic network, you're right.

OP, it is clear that your issue is with your service in your area (T-Mobile I presume?). That has absolutely nothing to do with the HD2 or with Android. So what's the purpose of this thread?

You have to understand the context. Do you understand what forum you're posting in? This is the Android Development subforum of HD2 on XDA. Nothing in this forum has anything, in any way, to do with your reception from T-Mobile, or how it compares to Sprint. If you're deciding between Evo or HD2 as a purchase, then yes, it matters....but this forum has nothing to do with that. Questions or news about Android builds for the HD2 in no way relates to your reception issues....unless it is an Android build that is causing them. Which does not appear to be the case.
Hence, you are getting attacked for this post. In the context of this environment, it is a worthless thread. Very simple.

Darkstone is not a cellphone, nor a service, nor a competitor. this builds are not for Newbies I have to say. in every single post related to "how to put AndrOS on the HD2," I always see a BIG, RED sign that read:
DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK - or something like that.
First of all, you have to respect the developers accomplishments. Because of them, you can go to the market and download a bunch of free apps and games, and God knows what else. Moreover, it's for free.
you know what I hope? that you other 9 comments on other threads had to do with sharing something, and not whining about a work in progress. Peace be with you.

Most people probably wont use this feature. Its just something ATT could gloat about for awhile, but really who needs to browse the net while talking that much where its a significant feature.
When I was on T-Mobile with the Nexus One, I actually did use voice and data a few times when the girlfriend was lost (shocker) and needed me to pull up Maps to help her out. It has been slightly frustrating on Verizon to have to hang up and call her back. It'll be nice to have that option again.

Thanks for the laugh! That was perfect
In all seriousness though, even if I don't upgrade (I probably won't), my brother will be getting one and I am quite jealous of the speed upgrade he'll be getting... No HDMI, pshh.
So who rly wants to use the hdmi on a phone? I leave the high def up to my ps3

Exactly, only purpose i could see (before DLNA was confirmed anyway) would have been the ability to share your videos via HDMI, so if you went to a friends/family members house and wanted to show your camcorder videos you could via HDMI, it would be as simply as a connection to the TV via the HDMI cable.
But now that mirroring has been unveiled by LG on there Optimus line of phones, Optimus 2X and Revolution, it might be a cool and all to see your games and UI on a big screen tv, but not really necessary since theres DLNA on board and most TV's anymore that are flatscreen or HD have it built in especially with the rise of internet capable tv's like my Samsung 52"
DLNA works great on the new sense and i love how its two way where you can control the content via the phone to the TV or from the PC to the phone and vice versa.
to the TV you can use the phone as the remote, control the playback, pause it turn the volume up and down and all that, just like a boxee minus the TV controls anyway lol
i can't wait till this phone launches, i love the new sense and its ability to have skins and the other features like Locations and Navigation by TomTom (it was confirmed after it launched on the Desire HD that TomTom was the maps/navigation provider)
if you look at all the options we have on this handset, it might not be a dual core phone but its definitely worth an upgrade from the Incredible, which reminds me
if Verizon does it the way i think they are, and launch after the 22nd, all the Original launch day Incredible owners would be eligible to upgrade to the ThunderBolt (assuming they got a 1 year contract, which i always get so i don't get burned when a new handset arrives the year after).
but it kinda makes sense,
launch the successor to a phone like the Incredible right after the time they become eligible to upgrade during there 1 year agreement, if i recall, they did this with the launch of the Droid X for the OGD owners, so timing really is everything.

Most people probably wont use this feature. Its just something ATT could gloat about for awhile, but really who needs to browse the net while talking that much where its a significant feature.

Let's not forget, ATT gloated about it as if it were an ATT feature and not a complete accident by way of the network technology they used. Back when I was on T-Mobile I met more than a few people who didn't believe they could do it too.

The six years I was on Cingular, AT&T and T-Mobile, I never used the data + voice feature. I have had to give my girlfriend directions the other day and I just said, let me call you right back, I pulled it up on maps and called right back.
lol... it's not that grand.
I for one honestly don't care about HDMI out. Like someone else stated above, I will leave HD to my PC and TV.

Agreed.
I have a special media player that plays my movies in WMV, MKV, basically anything I throw at it. Why would I want to use my phone?

True. I had a BB Curve, and being on the phone trying to pull up the Browser/Google Maps to get directions or anything was slower than hell...much easier just to look up and call back, you are correct there!
I am 42 yrs so for me a bigger screen without the cumbersome height of a droid x is worth considering. New sense is truly awesome too (now that I have played on the Z/HD ports) and the extra features are welcome. However, currently the Incredible is a truly open platform to us and we have no idea what HTC will do or be forced to do on the thunderbolt's bootloader. What if they go the motorola way?
As you can see from my sig I am a rom slut/whore/whatever is the male equivalent. I worry that HTC will make it harder for us to root the thunderbolt and that alone will be enough for me to rule out that phone. So I will seriously consider it only if I find out that it can be nand unlocked. Until then, no point switching from the inc to a phone that cant be modded and to be locked down into whatever the carrier allows me to do. That would be a bad trade. Plus LTE towers will only slowly be percolating across the country. I do not believe LTE will be widely available everywhere we are immediately. Why not wait a bit before paying for LTE service? Believe me, it will cost you more.
I also did not like the small battery. What if the energy utilization efficiencies are only marginal? That would not be good. The included 32gb micro sdhc card is worth some $ but think about this - why did they think they had to throw a free 32gb card in?
Another thing that concerns me is that while this phone might have better specs than the inc, it is not dual core (seems six months on every phone will be dual core) so is this a significant upgrade to the inc? I dont know. Early adopters may have a better toy only for a short period of time. The initial tech curve is always very steep.
My 2 cents

Uh oh for all of us who root noooooooooooo

If true...
http://phandroid.com/2011/04/04/developer-troubled-times-ahead-for-anyone-who-roots/
Oh and where's the tags that the mods add in on My threads about my girl blowing everyone lol I'm still waiting haaaaa update there it is
Oh nooooooeeessss!!!
Sigh.
This really makes me want to just use a laptop for a phone now.
At least I can do what I want with my laptop's data connection.
WTF!??

OK, this is the kinda stuff where either Google needs to get its balls back and *****-slap the carriers, or the FCC needs to actually step in to protect customers.
Either way, it's bull****. Screw Verizon and every other carrier that does this.
this is me forgetting to thank you.

It will never happen. The backlash would just be too much to handle.
And if manufacturers were to begin implementing these types of lockdowns, you know for a fact that they'll just be hacked around sooner or later.
Hello? We are discussing this on XDA... Home to undoubtedly the best group of white hat device hackers I've seen.
We all assume risk when rooting our devices and given the more open nature of Android, there's always the concern that some application will start stealing your data. It's a risk I'm willing to take and I'm sure most everyone else here as well.

Here's the problem with what you stated, the percentage of users rooted compared to non rooted, well are not even close, if they did lock out every new phone with master keys that we would never be able to figure out, well it could happen. Even if they did lose every rooted users support financially, they would still have more than 95 percent of their profiT, that's my fear, it'll hurt but not if sprint, Verizon, etc pays the difference or that kind of sort of thing. For example to make it easy, say all rooted user cause 600,000 in lost profit for sprint that they could have potentially gained, well HTC goes hey well lock the device but we want the difference from the users like us who will not purchase the phone. Anyway that's my take on it, enlighten me with your guys thoughts
It may be time to dust off my Razr.
Carriers get smart, devs get smarter......lets not jump the gun and worry about this nonsense now. I will enjoy my rooted phone for now. If this does go down those of you saying you will go to "dumbphones" are full of it. Even if these phones are locked down tighter than a 17 year old girls tuna you will still use it. I see the future as phones will be so fast why would you need to root; I love to root, I've been rooting ALL my phones since g1 and the sole purpose was the speed my phone up. Dual core phone no root ehh who cares. I will NOT use a free phone just because these phones in the future will possibly be locked. One can only hope this security doesn't see light but if it does I'm sure we'll be ok.

I've heard the "rooted users are the extreme minority" comment countless times, and all logic says it really must be true.
However, when I go to the market, click apps, then all applications, then click top paid, 3 of the top 5 require root. As an honest question, are my market results tailored for my usage history or is that the same "top paid" list everyone sees? If it is indeed the same for everyone then it becomes much harder to quantify rooted users being in the minority.

Completely agree about the smartphone part but do not about the master key part, it would take years like 75 - 100 if the key is properly secure for many and I mean many super computers to solve that algorithm...look at the droids, the only reason on a side note the ps3 master key was released was because the people who secured it messed up in the formula, and that still took 5 years..
the consequence would never be the same.
