Really upset. Illegal software and your warranty. - HD2 General

Well, I sent in my HD2 after having it for about a month because the touchscreen no longer worked. However they want $317.43 to replace the main board as I installed 'illegal' software on it (i.e., another ROM). They state because I did that, it is out of warranty and they wont cover the screen, even though they are unrelated.
Any thoughts on how to re-coup some money here? I've already paid $700 or so for the damn phone.
Anyone want an HD2 in this condition for a couple of hundred? It has nary a scratch on it. I freaking carried it in tissue paper for the month.
Any suggests? Please?

get it returned to you, flash stock rom from sd to remove hspl, (no need for touchscreen to do that) return it under warranty. Total loss? one set of shipping.

The problem with that is that the phone has the software lock on it. I could not unlock it to do that.
Oh, and they charge you a triage fee of $38.oo to look at it.

you dont need to boot the phone. put an sd card in it with the leoimg.nbh stock rom file on it, turn on phone holding voldown till it gets to bootloader, phone should see the nbh image and flash the rom, and remove the hspl at the same time.

Ask them to send the phone back, unlock it, flash back to stock ROM with stock SPL and hard reset and send it again. Job done

well there is a little hole in the back of the device pretty close to the soft reset button...anyways that button says WARRANTY and if its void they will press that little "button" in and your warranty will be void.

That's a good point - anyone had their HD2 come back as void?

Damn, so if it comes back like that, this is a total loss, huh? Can i sell it for parts?

still worth getting it returned without paying for it fixing, i would think, because that sticker is a screw cover, theres gotta be a chance they simply plugged it into a , erm, master computer, which showed hspl and rejected it before anyone even took the battery cover up.
plus of course its only the screen thats dodgy, can get that fixed far cheaper than HTC want to charge.

Can u post a pic about that button please?

Is there a sticker on the right hand side that also says void? Its parallel with the SIM card, just below the battery if its the same as mine?

@corny2007 yes thats the one

Just to clarify, the voided sticker covers screws so if opened, the device warranty is voided.

correct, but the assumtion made by an earlier poster is that the tech would see that hspl was installed, and break the void sticker to mark the device as out of warranty. (Can't see it myself, but you never know, cunning devils!)

AFAIK
I thought that the supplier has the responsibility to show that you have damaged a device by opening it anyway.
IOW damage or removal of those stickers don't necessarily mean that your rights to a repair have been lost.
For them to deliberately damage the stickers to "void your warranty sir" sounds like bordering on fraudulent. I sincerely hope a company like HTC wouldn't do something like that.
I would reply with: "The phone crashed on me in total darkness and I was fumbling around with a biro attempting to poke the stupidly small and impossibly placed reset button, I must have stuck it in your sticker by mistake."
EDIT: Final killer comment would be: "Unless of course one of your service guys did it out of pure spite to void my warranty?" :O

The void sticker is normal. It's if it's broken (by inserting a screwdriver in the screw) that things will go bad.

Why do they put it in such a tempting form? Why cant they have like a tab that snaps once the phone is open(Sticker that is connected to both the case and the main board)? Thats a much simpler and less scary and tempting.

I think there is stuff stuck down the side of the phone, and its as if the case isnt on properly.. I need to open it.
You could always send it back saying it was like that when you got it.
They'll do it for you and make it all shiny for you too

Yeah looked into that. Was wondering if it is possible to take off the sticker and then place it back on?
It's not worth claiming my insurance on I don't think..

I think I bricked my N1. Please help!

So I realized this the moment after I hit the trackball to select my .zip. To make things simple: I had cyanogen 5.0.6 and I accidentally flashed 2.2 for custom bootloaders. My phone won't even turn on...AT ALL. Am I ****ed?
Can you not get in the recovery image by holding down trackball and power button?
No. I don't know what to do. I flashed the Stock image earlier and it took awhile for my phone to turn on, but it did start up after a few minutes. Also it had a Radio that it flashed. Could it have been for the Tmobile model? I am on the AT&T version. Nothing will turn on.
did you try removing the battery ?
I did. I called support and they want me to send it in. Hopefully I will be one of the lucky people that HTC takes even if there is some broken rules.

Good luck. They are currently denying my warranty - even though my last Nexus went in TWICE, and they even DOA replaced it with body damage and an unlocked bootloader. Both times they just reverted the software back to locked, no questions asked. This time, after sending in the refurbed phone they gave me last month due to a faulty headphone jack, they say my "illegal software" voids my warranty - even though software can't break a headphone jack.

That could also be their way of saying we have fixed two phones of yours with unlocked (voided) warranties, we aren't doing it a third time... aka, three strikes and you are out. To be honest, I would be singing the praises of a company that warrantied a phone twice, even though I knowingly voided my warranty and agreed to a contract saying as much during the process.
OP, good luck! As this person's history shows, they are willing to go above and beyond with in reason. If I were you, before sending it in, I would try tossing it on the charger to make sure the battery isn't dead... flashing uses up a lot of juice, and messes with battery stats to an extent that can cause the phone to think a low battery is actually a dead battery, thus it doesn't power on since it doesn't want to die mid boot, which is bad.
Yeah, plug it in and see if you get the charging led, if you do let it charge for a while. Then try booting to recovery. If you cant unplug it and pull the battery. Plug it back in and hold down the power button for 15 seconds, put the battery in while still holding the power button for another 15 seconds or so. You got nothing to lose if it is bricked so give it a go. Check back if it lights off. Just a hint but I only keep whatever I'm going to flash on the root of the sd with the rest of the zips in a file. Keeps you from being where you are now.
mind keepping the battery out for a little while. i got the same problem yesterday and this solved it : i kept the battery pulled for about 1 minute before i put it back in. then the phone powered on no problems.

Rhetorical question:
What type of bad "luck" does somebody have to need a warranty replacement three times for a phone that's less than 4 months old?

I may be stupid, but that doesn't sound like you were doing anything wrong. I think that is how many people upgraded to FroYo.
What did you do when you thought you had done the wrong thing? You say you realized the moment you hit the trackball. Did you then try to stop it by pulling the battery? If so then you may have pulled it while the radio was flashing, which would brick it for sure.
Maybe they say it's illegal because Froyo is not released yet and they saw part of it installed on your N1.
This sucks big time, I wish you best of luck and I hope they end up fixing it for you.
what happens when you hold volume down and hit power...does the bootloader come up?
I flashed 2.2 over enomther's 1.9.2 on my att frequency n1 and it is working fine, I did the radio update too and it works fine.

Why would I sing the praises of a company that picks and chooses when it will void a warranty and when it will honor it? Furthermore, under the Manusson-Moss Warranty act of 1975, this behavior is illegal; warrantors of consumer goods cannot void a warranty due to modifications made by the consumer unless they can directly attribute the failure to the modification made. Which they have not done in my case.
Additionally, the first time it went in, was for dust under the screen - something an unlocked bootloader most definitely did not cause. The second time it went in was because they didn't fix it the first time - both times they relocked the phone. Also, the second time the phone went in, they DOA replaced it even though it had physical damage that I had previously been willing to pay for. And now, after they send me a damaged unit, they want to void my hardware warranty because the bootloader is unlocked? That just stinks of a money making scheme. I just called them, and they tell me that they cannot flash the motherboard due to the "illegal software", yet in the email they sent me it's all due to the warranty being void due to "illegal software". They're harping on a non-issue just to make money.
You can sing your praises to scheissty companies all you want - I'll stick to companies that are honest and up front in their dealings - or at least more so than HTFingC.

Well if there's no crud on your lens, and it dooesn't go away after a day or so, I'd say it's time to get a replacement.
Did it just start doing that out of the blue? i.e. has it worked properly before?
Looks like water or some liquid got in there, do you still have the 1 year warranty on the phone?
That looks like a ton of noise - more than likely the camera is shot or the connector is messed up. Doesn't look like the lens is cracked - definately looks like internal electronic damage or fault. If you don't have physical damage - get it covered under warranty or replaced if you have insurance.

Well you have a 1 year warranty from HTC that covers things that go wrong with the phone itself, not dropping it/screen cracks...but if you have other ROMs installed that voids the warranty (someone correct me if I'm mistaken)

No idea if they can check if you've had previously installed ROMs or not, call up T-Mobile though and ask if the manufactuers warranty covers the camera, don't say anything about the ROM though.
Yes, the warranty covers every part of the phone including the camera, and yes you can return it to stock to meet warranty requirements...I believe it's simply a process of first flashing back to the stock rom, and the proper SPL. Directions for that are over in the ROM dev section here.

Yeah it looked like a software, not hardware issue, notice how the noise was overlaid on the date/time stamp. if it were a sensor issue that date/time stamp would have been on top of the noise. Definitely an odd issue, because it did look like hardware at 1st glance.

Warranty

Unfortunately today on my display appeared a yellow vertical line from the battery icon up to the very top. This has to be a dead screen.
Since I have bought the device my GPS does not respond at all no-mater what I do...
Therefore I decided it is time to return it to ACER for a warranty repair. Of course I have unlocked my device and installed every possible tweak that exist here in the dev forum. So I want to ask if there is a way to return the device totally stock as it was out of the box or if the unlocking and rooting does void the warranty?
Thank you
Look in the development section you will find the AfterOTA tool that should help you do what you need.

I somehow managed to write in the wrong forum...I have a100 so would afterota work for me?
thanks
i had to send in my tablet and i asked the chat guy about rooting it and downloading a custom rom and he told me rooting it or installing a custom rom does not void the warranty as long as it doesnt damage the hardware
Yeah, they pretty much have to cover it under warranty. They will probably argue a little about this, but they know they have to as long as the previous poster stated, the hardware wasn't damaged as a result.
The fact is, they installed the means to allow us to do these modifications.
Like OEM Bootloader unlock on the 51x and 71x. Of course they put some really small lettered warning which even I can't read, but in reality, they offered the means to do this. Like putting an update.zip on the SD card, and booting to the stock recovery. APX and NVFlash falls under the same thing.
So don't worry. Turn it in for repair. At the worst, they will charge you some money for fixing it

How exactly did you 'disconnect' the battery in a device with a non-removable battery?
Also holding down power button for 30+ Seconds is the universal "Kill switch" for situations like this, I'm thinking popping the battery was probably the worst thing you probably could have done (as you may have done something inside the unit).
Also the "other software" bit... that is not usually a problem if there is actual hardware fault with the unit... however popping the thing open to disconnect the battery most certainly would have voided the hardware portion of the warranty.

The only other thing I can think of just off the top of my head, is the possibility you didn't ground yourself before messing with the battery and shorted something. Also not sure bout the whining noise from the N7 (as I'm nearly deaf I usually don't hear high pitch stuff from my own stuff).

Depending on the company problems caused by hardware (if you can prove it), would be irrelevant if the bootloader was unlocked if the hardware fault would have occurred regardless. I've actually helped a friend (many years ago) get warranty on his HTC Sapphire (T-Mobile MyTouch3G Fender), even though it had been rooted and custom bootloader, because the fault was clearly hardware and unrelated to anything that was done via the software.

Are you sure? As far as I know unlocking the boot loader doesn't void the warranty. Only in case the unlocked boot loader is the reason for the fault (I.e. you flashed it with wrong software) the warranty us considered void.
A different thing is opening the case: this might be seen as a reason to declare the warranty void.

This is fundamentally true. It's part of the magnussen-moss warranty acct. But if you were denied (wrongly) are you going to legally challenge them over a $200 device?
The warranty act was put in place, partially, to keep Mfgs from requiring branded parts/consumables to get warranty protection. For instance requiring you to run Ford branded oil in your Ford truck. But a side benefit is that you cannot (should not) be denied warranty for a bad windshield washer motor because you put wider rims on your car.
Back to our devices. I think the whole warranty thing is blown out of proportion. There is no bounty for finding rooted device. I guarantee you the returns dept is short staffed and has a metric for how many devices they process a day. Is anyone seeing lots of reports of warranty denied? It's a $200 device, not a new engine for a Subaru WRX.
With all that said I'm not a fan of sending a device that was borked by a bad flash back for warranty replacement. (Bad hardware is a different case.
