I think I bricked my N1. Please help! - Nexus One General

So I realized this the moment after I hit the trackball to select my .zip. To make things simple: I had cyanogen 5.0.6 and I accidentally flashed 2.2 for custom bootloaders. My phone won't even turn on...AT ALL. Am I ****ed?

Can you not get in the recovery image by holding down trackball and power button?

No. I don't know what to do. I flashed the Stock image earlier and it took awhile for my phone to turn on, but it did start up after a few minutes. Also it had a Radio that it flashed. Could it have been for the Tmobile model? I am on the AT&T version. Nothing will turn on.

did you try removing the battery ?

I did. I called support and they want me to send it in. Hopefully I will be one of the lucky people that HTC takes even if there is some broken rules.

Good luck. They are currently denying my warranty - even though my last Nexus went in TWICE, and they even DOA replaced it with body damage and an unlocked bootloader. Both times they just reverted the software back to locked, no questions asked. This time, after sending in the refurbed phone they gave me last month due to a faulty headphone jack, they say my "illegal software" voids my warranty - even though software can't break a headphone jack.

That could also be their way of saying we have fixed two phones of yours with unlocked (voided) warranties, we aren't doing it a third time... aka, three strikes and you are out. To be honest, I would be singing the praises of a company that warrantied a phone twice, even though I knowingly voided my warranty and agreed to a contract saying as much during the process.
OP, good luck! As this person's history shows, they are willing to go above and beyond with in reason. If I were you, before sending it in, I would try tossing it on the charger to make sure the battery isn't dead... flashing uses up a lot of juice, and messes with battery stats to an extent that can cause the phone to think a low battery is actually a dead battery, thus it doesn't power on since it doesn't want to die mid boot, which is bad.

Yeah, plug it in and see if you get the charging led, if you do let it charge for a while. Then try booting to recovery. If you cant unplug it and pull the battery. Plug it back in and hold down the power button for 15 seconds, put the battery in while still holding the power button for another 15 seconds or so. You got nothing to lose if it is bricked so give it a go. Check back if it lights off. Just a hint but I only keep whatever I'm going to flash on the root of the sd with the rest of the zips in a file. Keeps you from being where you are now.

mind keepping the battery out for a little while. i got the same problem yesterday and this solved it : i kept the battery pulled for about 1 minute before i put it back in. then the phone powered on no problems.

I may be stupid, but that doesn't sound like you were doing anything wrong. I think that is how many people upgraded to FroYo.
What did you do when you thought you had done the wrong thing? You say you realized the moment you hit the trackball. Did you then try to stop it by pulling the battery? If so then you may have pulled it while the radio was flashing, which would brick it for sure.

Maybe they say it's illegal because Froyo is not released yet and they saw part of it installed on your N1.
This sucks big time, I wish you best of luck and I hope they end up fixing it for you.

what happens when you hold volume down and hit power...does the bootloader come up?
I flashed 2.2 over enomther's 1.9.2 on my att frequency n1 and it is working fine, I did the radio update too and it works fine.

Why would I sing the praises of a company that picks and chooses when it will void a warranty and when it will honor it? Furthermore, under the Manusson-Moss Warranty act of 1975, this behavior is illegal; warrantors of consumer goods cannot void a warranty due to modifications made by the consumer unless they can directly attribute the failure to the modification made. Which they have not done in my case.
Additionally, the first time it went in, was for dust under the screen - something an unlocked bootloader most definitely did not cause. The second time it went in was because they didn't fix it the first time - both times they relocked the phone. Also, the second time the phone went in, they DOA replaced it even though it had physical damage that I had previously been willing to pay for. And now, after they send me a damaged unit, they want to void my hardware warranty because the bootloader is unlocked? That just stinks of a money making scheme. I just called them, and they tell me that they cannot flash the motherboard due to the "illegal software", yet in the email they sent me it's all due to the warranty being void due to "illegal software". They're harping on a non-issue just to make money.
You can sing your praises to scheissty companies all you want - I'll stick to companies that are honest and up front in their dealings - or at least more so than HTFingC.

N1 Warranty and device swap

my nexus ones headphone jack is faulty, it doesnt output to the left speaker anymore. ive done everything possible to fix it and nothing has worked permermantly.
unfortunatly ive rooted my device which has voided my warranty. im absolutly positive this had nothing to do with the headphone problem, as its a physical issue with the jack and not software
will they refuse to swap my device because ive rooted?
is it possible to relock the bootloader to factory default yet?
do you need to be the original owner to device swap? i bought mine new off craigslist so it wasnt bought in my name.
is there a water damage sticker in the headphone jack? (i tried cleaning it with a q tip moistened with alcohol to fix it and if there is one i may have tripped it)
i really like this phone and i use it as my ipod now but its so annoying only having audio in one earpeice, and when i plug it into my car the right plays fine but the left makes awful static noises due to the fm transmitter not getting a signal on the left channel.

Yep, just give it a try. Be prepared to tell them that rooting the device is likely not the cause of one audio channel to go out - What I mean is that you should be prepared to defend the fact the phone is rooted but your not sending it in because you bricked it but because a hardware related issue needs fixing and that this is in no way related to you rooting the phone.

the worst thing that can happen is i send it in and they refuse charging me 28 dollars and shipping charges. on the site it says i call them and they will ship me a new one with a box for the old one and i send the old one back.
ill call htc today and be completely honest with them, hopefully they will be understanding.

i called in and was honest with them and they immediately said too bad you have to pay 200 dollars to replace the mother board even though its their own [email protected] fault.
rooting it has no control over headphone jack hardware, but the man on the phone said regardless of that as stated in the tos it voids all warranties by rooting it.
even though people have been saying that they still honor hardware warranties after rooting this is not true.
so now ive given up on being honest and im going to find a way to kill my phone along with any rooting evidence without voiding my warranty.
if they didnt trap the consumer into voiding their warranty they would simply have to fix the headphone jack and they could resell the phone as refurbished, now they will have to replace the whole thing. assholes.
if you call in about warranty issues DO NOT give them your serial and imei number unless your sure they are going to replace it.
Call Google first, they may help you somehow. If not, sell it on ebay, people buy Nexus ones with minor faults (or any other electronics) for slightly less, but still better then having crap.

Bwahahaha... HTC didn't TRAP you into rooting. Did they force you to do it? Did they hold a gun to your head? Did they not WARN you in documentation AND on the phone's screen that unlocking the bootloader VOIDS the warranty?
I'm tired of people trying to blame HTC, as if somehow they made you do it. Here's an idea... if you want to keep your warranty... DON'T ROOT. The phone's amazing with the stock ROM anyway. I'm happy not having to update every few days when a Developer releases an incremental update, etc. And if you DO choose to root...man up and take responsibility.
But, clearly it's not software related, it's not related to him rooting his phone. It's the headphone jack, and that's hardware. So, No one can far seen hardware malfunction before hand, unless you have "super natural powers".

I don't work for HTC. I'm simply a law student who's taken Contracts...
Anyway, I agree with you. Rooting probably doesn't cause the headphone jack to malfunction. But the legal system holds the power of parties to enter into contracts very highly. So... if YOU agree to keep or void the warranty on your own and you're not forced into it, then the law recognizes that as a valid and binding agreement.

Lol... at least make me the Judge Joe Brown! Seriously though... I don't particularly like that you have to void the warranty to unlock the bootloader... but I do understand that since we are given the option to leave it locked to keep our warranty and that the phone "works fine without unlocking the bootloader", any court would laugh at a lawsuit against HTC by one of us regarding this..
I wonder if UK law is slightly different, as over here (using the car euphemism) if I were to modify my engine, and then had issues with my lets say brakes, they would still be under warranty.
it'd only be parts directly affected by my modifications with which warranty would be able to be made invalid (engine pretty much, unless my modifications caused extra power in which case maybe gearbox too)
but I am not a lawyer and I know nuffink!

U.S. law is like that too when it comes to cars. (American law is based on British law, you know ) But the car euphemism is a horrible example. I've had this same argument in another thread as well.
A better euphemism is to just think of the CD player in your car. If you remove it and disassemble it thinking you might be able to change the color of the LEDs inside it, and then it no longer works, will the manufacturer replace it for you? No...

That's not better! By your analogy the OP has tried to change something with the headphone jack and now it doesn't work.
Car warranties are far more complex and detailed anyway so you can't compare them. Sadly, the warranty on a phone is all or nothing and by unlocking the device, you invalidated the entire warranty. True, the headphone jack would have broken just the same without unlocking the device but that's irrelevant as far as HTC's legal commitment to you goes. Some manufacturers will still do warranty work in this kind of situation purely out of the desire to keep good customer relations (Samsung replaced my Omnia when I had done all kinds of hacking and custom rom installs) but if they don't, that's entirely their legal right.
Unfortunately, telling them you had unlocked probably did you no favours. If it was me, I'd have kept quiet unless they apecifically ask
im confident that the Manufacturer stands to protect themselves from warranty abuse by stating they wont cover modified devices. its unfortunate but not surprising at all

No. By my analogy, the OP has "gone into" his phone, thus voiding the warranty. It's just like taking your phone apart and removing those little "VOID" stickers on the screws. You're right... car warranties are far more complex because it's a variety of devices assembled into a vehicle, whereas our phone is a single unit.
HTC was covering the phones even with unlocked bootloaders for a while... I believe for the same reason you suggested. I tried telling people not to rely on that and they could start denying claims anytime. But few people listen...they just ***** afterwards.

i think it is a trap. do you know what type of people will buy a phone off the internet without ever holding it solely based on the technical specifications? the type of people that will root it, and more often than not root it successfully. if i decided hey lets overclock my processor and enable the flashlight at full brightness then stick it under my pillow overnight then yes, its my own damn fault. but if htc is refusing to fix a problem caused by their own inability to design a functional headphone jack that can withstand normal wear and tear, especially after 2 months, because i rooted it which has no control over the headphone jack, then yes, it is a trap.
they never put this lock on their other phones. my rooting this had nothing to do with the headphone jack whatsoever, its their fault they should fix it. i understood the risks and decided to root under the pretense that this was a quality piece of hardware and it wasn't gonna crap out on me unless i decided to play with the battery while flashing the radio or something. if i knew there was a high chance of hardware failure inherit in the device i never would have rooted.
so dont come to me *****ing and whining when anyone who is refused a refund for something that is htc's fault for a stupid reason is correct in blaming the company.
upon closer reading of the tos it voids your warranty to sell the device, technically you can only receive support if you are the original owner.
this is a slime ball way of htc voiding the warranty on a high percentage of their devices for actions that have no effect on the health of the device.
i will take responsibility for something i did wrong, but i wont fall prey to a large companies bull****.

Galaxy S II dead after a month of use

So, pretty much exactly a month after I received my SGSII, the phone is now dead.
As I was commuting to work this morning and listening to music, the phone restarted completely at random. I chalked it up to just being a part of the Android experience until, 15 minutes later, the phone boots up again in my pocket. After that the reboots came in thick and fast until the phone was in a constant cycle of rebooting, with no time in between to even type in my PIN before the phone shut down again.
I haven't dropped the phone and it hasn't gotten wet (unless standing in the rain under an umbrella with the phone in my pocket is enough to wreck it), so there shouldn't be any damage that I could've caused.
At this point I removed the battery and just let it sit for 5 minutes before trying to boot it up again. It started up fine but restarted again after around 10 minutes. I shut the phone down, removed the SD card and tried again, but the phone still shut down after a while. After that I yanked out the SIM but that didn't fix anything either. The battery had around 90% charge at this point, the battery contacts looked just fine and it wasn't overheating or anything so I was a little mystified as to what the hell had gone wrong overnight.
I called up Samsung's Customer Support and they told me to factory reset the phone through the OS. The reset goes through it's paces until it comes time to reboot and then.. nothing. The phone is now completely bricked and will not respond to any key presses nor will it react in any way when I plug in the charger. After I told Samsung's customer rep about this, the first thing the guy asked was if I had rooted the phone or installed a custom ROM, to which I answered - truthfully - that I hadn't. By the sound of his voice he didn't seem to believe me and referred me fairly reluctantly to their RMA service to get it repaired while underlining the fact that they wouldn't do **** for me if there were any proof of tampering with the ROM. After that he said goodbye in a fairly annoyed voice and hung up before I got a word in.
Has anyone had their SGSII just spontaneously combust on them? Right now I'm feeling extremely pissed that I have to go through the RMA process with basically a brand new phone. The repair time is floating around at 2 weeks to a month due to holidays and whatever during which time I'll have to make due with a ****ty Nokia backup phone. The electronics repairs firm Samsung uses here in Finland is notorious for their crappy level of service and they've scratched the hell out of my two previous HTC phones that were serviced by them.

A friend of mine had more or less the same problem with the HTC HD2. Random reboots at first, then not bootable/flashable and a couple of tries later it was completely dead. They had to exchange the mainboard. Seems like some chip got damaged somehow ...
try removing the battery a few more times........good luck

I'm somewhat surprised by this, given the fact that Sammy themselves have given a device to the team at CM7 Towers. I always thought they had a fairly relaxed attitude to custom ROMs, etc.

Don't put up with any crap they give you. Considering that moron is meant to represent customer support, he should be more supportive of a customer who bought a £500 phone from the very company that pays him, and the last thing he should be doing is making you feel guilty when you're obviously innocent. The guy sounds like a complete prick.

Development want feedback etc from the community .

Why would the supporter care what's been done to the phone? Him having to ask questions for warranty purposes is obvious, but if a caller lies and the warranty is later rejected surely it wouldn't matter to him personally.

Put off the battery, sd card and sim card.
Then wait 10minutes.
When the 10m pass, put the battery in the phone and hold immediately power + home + vol down.
I think your will go in download mode.

You should always say something like "I have no idea what that is or means. All I know is my phone stopped working."
I would do as they said. Get into download mode, then flash the official ROM+Kernel for your device and see what happens. If you still have the same problem, then it is a hardware problem and you need to go through the repair process.
Random reboot, it's a well known issue caused by an app. Frequently the music player, or No lock, or something else...

yes its understandable to ask if its been rooted. but bad customer service is still bad customer service. even if the op was lying, that rep doesnt get paid to have his being annoyed get in the way of providing the customer a friendly experience.

Latest and greatest for atrix?

My phone has been half broken for the better part of 3 months because i partitioned the internal sd and lost half my touch screen and the buttons on the bottom of the phone. So i got it fixed thanks to kermit and bongd and now im on 4.1.5.7 and I didn't do the newer update yet. My question is now what's the latest and greatest for the atrix as far as roms go. I used gingerblur in the past but its been 3 months so im wondering what you guys are using now

4.1.83 is the last official build for att, has been out for awhile and is very stable, no reason not to go to that.
Soon the 2.3.4 update will be out officially, tell then we can just wait.
and the same players are pretty much the same, higher version numbers but gingerblur, grayblur, gladiatrix are still the favorites.
My thoughts on warranty are that unless its obvious that its been tampered with (specifically that it says unlocked when first powered on), then warranty would not be an issue. All reports ive seen say that when flashing back to a stock 1.8.3 sbf, that unlocked disappears, even though the bootloader may still be partially unlocked. On top of that, in most cases, if the phone is damaged beyond the ability to repair with a sbf flash, its probably not going to be functional enough for the unlocked status of the bootloader to be determined in the first place. there is always a chance, but imo its very minimal.
In regards to "whats best" 1.8.3 with gingerblur imo is the best option if you arent willing to do some tweaking and play with the unlocked bootloader and 2.3.4. If you are however, then unlocked, rooted, 2.3.4 is the shiznit.
Conversation is winding up on the Motorola forums, and one of the forum managers, Mark, has indicated a survey will go out very soon, (soon being in the next few days), for soak testing the 2.3 update.
Looks like they may aim for very early July, if not end of this week, to start pushing out soak test beta updates.

Unlock does disappear when you flash back, but where do you think all the refurb phones come from?
They go back to Moto, who run diagnostic software and tools to determine what, if anything, needs to be repaired before they send the phones back out as refurbs. They will see right away it is unlocked, and if it voids your warranty, expect a bill from them, or your carrier, after the fact. This happened to an ex of mine a couple of years ago where she was billed the full value of the replacement phone by AT&T after they found she had messed with the one she sent back. That was a Moto phone also.
Sure, if you run over your phone with your car you will be ok, but what if it's something simple like the screen goes out, power button stops working, etc.?

As i stated in my post, that was just my opinion, i never deemed it to be fact. Id also like to add, that i was referring to att tech support, and replacement being done under att insurance, NOT motorola direct.

Yup, and AT&T doesn't just junk them. They return them for evaluation/repair. Doesn't matter if your replacement is through insurance. They still repair and sell as refurbs if possible.

How so, I love my phone? I won't suffer in the least from whatever I'm not doing.. lol
I don't have to have the latest and greatest hack or mod that's going around so that I can impress people.. My phone does everything I've needed of it so far (with rooting) and saving whatever money I can if it breaks within the warranty period is a no brainer.. Yes maybe it could look cooler or run just a tiny bit faster (I also can wait for the official at&t update for some of that) but nothing looks cooler than a working phone and $400 in my pocket..

im sure they do. My opinion is based on my experiences with insurance in the past, specifically a phone that was returned due to water damage, but the water sensors did not trip (clearly damage that voids warranty), and yet it was replaced and i never heard anything from HTC or att regarding the water damage. It was inspected by a low level tech support representative to determine it could be replaced under warranty, the inspection consisted of removing the back panel and checking the water markers and determining the phone wouldnt power on. a more thorough investigation by htc would have revealed water damage, so either they did not inspect it, but rather just junked it, or they did not pursue reimbursement for the phone once they determined it was not warrantable. two different comanies, two different problems, but same concept. Just because its not warrantable, doesnt mean it wont be replaced under warranty. I would never suggest someone rely on this happening of course, just pointing out that it DOES happen.
Warranty claims are handled by the carrier. If the phone is deemed to be abused/damaged/hacked during the replacement process, you will be billed for the replacement handset's cost. If they don't find the cause during this process, the phone is grouped according to the level of damage and sent off to be refurbished/parted out/recycled, and you are in the clear.
The insurance process is handled by a third party, and covers pretty much ANYTHING that you could do to your phone. They don't care what you've done to it, because by that time you've already paid for the refurbished replacement via your monthly fee & deductible.
That being said.. I'm not encouraging anyone to commit fraud, nor do I guarantee results, but I work in the industry and have a lot of experience with thes issues. IMO, if you're trying to get a warranty replacement for your bricked phone, you're abusing the system. You knew what you were getting into when you started flashing/hacking/modding, and therefore the problem is clearly not a 'manufacturer's defect', which is what warranties cover.
Insurance on the other hand, is there to cover anything. If you're allowed to plunge your phone into the toilet, or toss it out of a moving vehicle, and still get a replacement, then flashing & bricking are certainly deserving of coverage as well. I have a feeling with all these manufacturers releasing unlocked bootloaders we'll see some more fine print added to our policies in the near future.
Just my experience & 2 cents. Personally i'm waiting for the official GB att release, because at least then when I unlock my phone I'll be doing it with the blessing (and testing) of the manufacturer, and therefore much less likely to screw myself with an incompatible version of GB

Exactly!! I'm just beginning to learn about android development and definitely not ready for such an experimental build. It amazes me how many people are willing to mess with their ROMs without knowing what they're doing. I'm taking the time to read everything I can find on here before I start experimenting with adb/rsd/fastboot/etc.. Hopefully i'll be ready to go when the official build is released.

Rant: HTC's Awesome Repair Service

First off this is going to be a rant so if you guys do not want to read it then I suggest you leave now.
Also let me just clear things up, I am a 17 year old kid that needs his phone as much as possible. I am attached and I am not scared to admit it. I am very very tech savvy and know what I am doing with my phone in terms of flashing ROM's,kernels, recoveries, and rooting. I have been on androids side for over 5 years now and have been through almost every top end device. I have bricked one tablet in my past but noted to never do that again. I pay for all of my devices and work 2 jobs to counter my technology habit.
Story: One night I flashed a CM nightly as I am a pure stock android type of guy. Everything went through fine and I had a usable phone for the next few hours before I fell asleep. At about 4 in the morning I got a text and it woke me up. I went to check it and realized that my phone was incredibly hot so I figured that I would turn it off and turn it back on in about 10 minutes after it is all cooled off and then diagnose the problem. Before shutting off I also checked my battery stats with everything checking out just fine and the battery was sitting at about 65% charged. After the 10 minutes I went to turn on the phone and realized right off the bat that the charging LED was not on. Scared I tried every button combination to turn on the phone with no luck. I tried numerous chargers including my computer to even see if I could adb flash something onto it if it was software oriented with no avail. I officially had a paperweight of a phone and it wouldnt turn on nor charge.
So very frustrated and worried I contacted HTC support via online chat at about 6 my time which is 8 their time. The lady walked me through all the simple button combinations and even though I knew it would do me no good I tried them anyways. After several frustrating minutes we both gave up and the lady was starting to take about 5 minutes in between each response so after the 3 response or so I was even more frustrated. We decide to sign me up for a repair and about half way through the process she asks my age, given I am 17 she cannot finish the process which is understandable. However, this should be one of the very first starting questions rather than down the line when we are half way through the process. I digress, she tells me to call with an adult next time and also tells me about their other 2 repair options that she failed to even mention before, another very frustrating moment. Regardless we end the chat and I call back later.
A few hours later my mother calls HTC support to see what we can do and right off the bat this lady is so much more helpful and quick with her responses really knowing what she is talking about. She covers the other 2 options the person via chat failed to cover along with going very in depth as to how each process works. A $20 option seemed to suit me the best as they send you a phone immediately after receiving your phone sort of like a straight exchange. However, she tells us (My mother and I) that since HTC is running out on parts that this option isnt available at this time and to check back tomorrow as that's when the shipment of parts is coming in. So with our hands tied we hang up and I go about my day phoneless.
Fast forward to today, I go and get a loaner phone from tmobile along with a different sim. They charge me $50 dollars which will be refunded to me once I return the phone but mind you I don't have tons of money so this is an inconvenience. I call HTC again and ask them about their $20 swap option and the guy very enthusiastic gives me the description on how it works. After hearing all this I tell him that is indeed what I want to do and then that's when he tells me that bad news: HTC doesn't have enough inventory to do so leaving me with only one option, send in the phone and wait for the repair and shipping back (10-14 day process). Frustrated and running out of options (literally) I tell him to just do that. He goes over a ton of information in a short amount of time and then emphasizes that they have a very strict warranty and that if they find anything that they can conclude I did to cause the phone a shorter life span than I will be given a quote to fix my phone via email. I finally hang up but am on the edge at this point. If they cannot fix my phone for free I am going to be pissed. It will also mean that they will never receive my service again because I know for a fact that I did not cause this. A thread was made about this same exact problem so I know it wasnt a fault on my end. Regardless, I will keep you all updated.

What's the absurdity? You understood the risks when you unlocked the bootloader; and in fact long before that since you're experienced with modding phones. And if HTC doesn't have inventory for the $20 swap, than there isn't anything they can do about that. Its not like they can make stock magically appear out of nowhere.
Did you try to leave the phone on the wall charger overnight, and see if the charging LED returned or you can power on, or get into bootloader?

I just think that if it is purely a hardware issue and they deny me warranty over a software unlock then its bogus. Also I think its sad that a phone company does not have enough inventory.
I did and no power whats so ever. No charging LED and phone just sit off, I would love to even get into the bootloader at this point or to even see any signs of life.

Running completely different software on your phone can cause hardware problems. There are so many different variables that could have gone wrong, leading your phone to overheat. Especially considering it was a Nightly.

Overclocking at all will reduce the life span. Which I'm not saying you have, but it's pretty much common practice around here. (I certainly have)
Maybe you should take the warning it gives you about unlocking your phone more seriously. And not blame HTC for wanting to fix a problem you caused.

I guess so. I just figured that many other HTC phones have had this problem in the past (Including the M8) so it was just something on their end.
Also I have never OC'ed but have UC'ed.

Ideologically I agree that they should not deny you warranty for a hardware issue. But its the terms of their warranty and the terms of the bootloader unlock (both of which are spelled out clearly) that you have voided the warranty.
Keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.
Mhm, stuff like this is a large part of why they try to lock phones down in the first place.

Phone Not Booting HELP

This morning I had to force reboot my phone because it froze. But it never rebooted. Here I am 11 hours later, and it still won't boot up. I've tried everything; charging it, and trying to boot into recovery mode. No luck. Can someone please help me out?! The carrier will not send it to essential due to the fact that I did a sim card swap, and that voided the warranty. (BTW that's the stupidest thing I've in my life) HELP!!

Latest stock firmware. Has been sent to essential for repair/ replacement. Would still be nice to know what else I could have done.
You held the power button down until the phone completely powered off? I'm assuming you did but just checking. If Essential is taking the phone for repair presumably they made sure you did all the obvious things first.

Yes I did everything the the girl on customer service told me to do. I'm wondering if maybe cause of it freezing had something to do with the ram?

First, where are you? Country that is? In the US that is not a valid reason to void a warranty if you have the receipt.
Also how long are you holding the power button?
In some cases you might have to attach the charger and hold the button for 30-45 seconds.
Does the charging light come on?
Hold all three buttons for about 30 seconds, this forces a hard reboot

It could be caused by bad memory or a bad CPU. It's hard to say but if Essential customer support had you try different things they must think it's hardware failure. If you are in the US they aren't going to fix your phone and send it back to you. They're going to replace it with a refurbished phone. Hopefully they aren't like Google who more often than not sends customers refurbished phones that are defective when someone does an RMA. I haven't heard any similar horror stories about Essential so far. Essential also makes its own phones while Google uses an outside manufacturer so their situations are a bit different but owning two Google phones (Nexus 6P & Pixel XL) has made me wary where refurbished replacements are concerned. But Essential probably couldn't get away with what Google does without getting slammed in the tech press so you are likely pretty safe. Good luck.

We'll see what they end up sending back next week, I'm I get a different phone, so I won't end up having the same issues. But then again I hope they can fix the issue on my phone
