Warranty - Acer Iconia A500

Unfortunately today on my display appeared a yellow vertical line from the battery icon up to the very top. This has to be a dead screen.
Since I have bought the device my GPS does not respond at all no-mater what I do...
Therefore I decided it is time to return it to ACER for a warranty repair. Of course I have unlocked my device and installed every possible tweak that exist here in the dev forum. So I want to ask if there is a way to return the device totally stock as it was out of the box or if the unlocking and rooting does void the warranty?
Thank you

Look in the development section you will find the AfterOTA tool that should help you do what you need.

A few months ago my A500 would not turn on no matter what I did, totally bricked, bad power switch. It was rooted with a custom ROM etc etc. I had no way to return to stock before getting warranty repair, so I returned it for warranty repair. Acer repaired it under warranty, no questions asked.

I somehow managed to write in the wrong forum...I have a100 so would afterota work for me?
thanks

i had to send in my tablet and i asked the chat guy about rooting it and downloading a custom rom and he told me rooting it or installing a custom rom does not void the warranty as long as it doesnt damage the hardware

Yeah, they pretty much have to cover it under warranty. They will probably argue a little about this, but they know they have to as long as the previous poster stated, the hardware wasn't damaged as a result.
The fact is, they installed the means to allow us to do these modifications.
Like OEM Bootloader unlock on the 51x and 71x. Of course they put some really small lettered warning which even I can't read, but in reality, they offered the means to do this. Like putting an update.zip on the SD card, and booting to the stock recovery. APX and NVFlash falls under the same thing.
So don't worry. Turn it in for repair. At the worst, they will charge you some money for fixing it

Rooted note 2 and custom ROM installed, Warranty help?

Hi All,
I rooted and installed the android revolution ROM last week and lastnight I stood on my note 2 which has messed up the screen. I can see about 1/10th of the screen. If it gets sent back for repair am I screwed? I was going to install a stock ROM and reset the counter using chainfires software but this will be near impossible.
Any advice?
One would think that they'll realise that a broken screen cannot be caused by a modified ROM.
However I doubt that standing on the screen is covered by warranty anyway so either way I think you'll have to pay for repair

I have the phone insured so they will either repair it or replace it. If it gets sent back for repair I'm hoping they don't check if the phone is rooted and send it back saying we will not repair as it has been rooted. I think i'll just have to take my chances.

[Q] Return to Stock for Warranty Replacement

Hey, I looked around for a little bit, and couldn't find a thread with quite the info I needed. Sorry if this has already been asked elsewhere.
I just bought my Razr M, used. The device is in great shape, except for some serious screen burn-in of I'm-not-sure-what-app. It was rooted and unlocked by the previous owner. I imagine that the burn-in is grounds for warranty repair, but I've read that unlocking burns a fuse on the phone. Also apparently there's a new OTA that blocks unlocking?
That said, I'd like to know:
1. Is the screen burn-in a common problem, and have people had success in getting warranty repair done by Motorola for this?
2. How can I safely restore the device to stock in preparation for warranty repair/replacement without arousing Motorola's suspicion?
I saw this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391641
But I'm not sure that it's the solution I need.
3. Is there any way to prevent Motorola from handing me back a device that's updated to the newest OTA and blocked from being unlocked?
Thanks XDA!
[EDIT]
I -think- a combination of options 1 and 2 (flash stock 4.1.2 rom/radios/kernel & recovery is what I need to do, using this utility here?

that's a tough spot since you bought the device used. motorola may still honor the warranty if the issue is hardware related. however, being unlocked does NOT cause burn-in (I think you misread the fuse part - it was a metaphor).
that being said, if motorola was to honor the warranty, they might just send you a refurb since it is cheaper than repairing the screen. and that refurb would probably have the latest OTA.
however, I doubt that they will since you bought it used - but it won't hurt to ask them. careful giving out your EIN to them, as they'll be able to tell if the device is rooted.
I would suggest reaching out to the seller (especially if bought on e-bay). if they did not report the issue with the burn-in, you might be entitled to your money back.
good luck.

Thanks for the advice. The sceen-burn in is annoying, but livable. That said, I did call Motorola, and they accepted me for RMA after asking for my ESN. I'm sure they have ways of telling if the fuse for unlocking was used - is there any way to cover it up that other people have used?

My restore will work for you.
Follow the steps but once you boot to cwmr do not flash the updateSU, flash stock recovery & choose no to protect root & no to protect recovery. Done.
(have the WARNINGSTOCKRECOVERY.zip on your sd beforehand & get it from goodies)

[Q] Rooting without voiding the warranty?

Hello! If I root my Nexus 10 without unlocking the bootloader, will the warranty be voided or not? I think it will be voided only if the bootloader is unlocked, but it will be better if someone confirms it. Thank you!

IIRC the warranty on a Nexus device is more lenient because... well... it's a Nexus. Any warranty claims for physical hardware issues should still be accepted since it has nothing to do with the software. It's also extremely easy to return to stock and relock the bootloader so even if you do need to send it in for repair, they'll never know.

Your best bet is to always restore to stock before making a warranty claim. A while ago I remember reading about an Asus user who's headphone port was no longer working but Asus voided the warranty due to the device being rooted. I know that's a pretty different scenario but some warranty reps will find any reason to void your device so they don't have to pay. Always better to be safe than sorry I guess.
As was said before don't worry about rooting, it is extremely easy to get back to stock and since it is a Nexus device you have a ton of failsafe options in case something does happen to go wrong,

Root and insurance: my experience

This covers an issue that I've seen asked time and time again with no definitive answer given.
I suppose this isn't an answer but merely my experience
Last monday my note 2 fell out of my pocket and my screen subsequently was destroyed, not just cracked but full on chunks of glass missing. I am insured by Halifax who like most banks in the UK (Barclays, TSB, Nationwide, co-op etc) use Lifestyle Services Group Limited (LSG) to deal with their insurance.
My device was rooted with CM11 and I was using CWM recovery, after searching for an answer to would this affect my insurance, i found nothing that really helped me with LSG, in fact the only things I did find were 100s of general complaints about them trying to get around doing repairs, they didn't fill me with hope.
so biting the bullet I notified them of the damage, made a Nandroid, did a factory reset and sent my phone away on Tuesday :fingers-crossed: .
On Wednesday evening I received an email saying my phone was being returned to me and a tracking number but nothing else. Upon arrival I found a letter saying my "device has been repaired and updated" and a brand new Note 2
after installing CWM again and restoring my phone is perfect again. So if anyone out there has similar concerns to those that I had about root and insurance I hope this gives you a bit of peace of mind. :highfive:

Stock android on the note 2 does have KNOX yes, however obviously when I rooted and installed CM11 it no longer did.
the flash counter changed to 1
The phone I received back from them was back on stock android, and the flash counter read as 0 again

so aye they did repair it even with my flash counter having been tripped
I imagine that it was an easy decision for them to make because the screen breakage had nothing to do with whether the phone was rooted or not. If they'd refuse to repair it and you'd taken them on, it would have been very hard for them to defend themselves.
However, if your phone dies because of a software/hardware issue and it's rooted and/or has a custom ROM installed, they might argue that your actions (i.e. rooting, etc) led to the device failing. And they might then enforce their "warranty void" policy. So people just need to be careful in that situation, and not be too disappointed if their claim is rejected.
Glad you had good luck tho!

aye, the whole warranty void issue was where I believed they could turn me down.
in the past I've claimed on the warranty twice (still using stock) and both times have only at the last minute remembered to swap the back panel to the original as the one at the time had a palm stone wireless charging plate in it which I'm sure would have resulted in them sending it back untouched

[Q] Restore Broken Phone

Alright then!
The other day I dropped my phone, from rather high place, and completely ruined the phone screen. Only the top quater is visible (still touch responsive) but is very pixellated and not all that quater is working.
Anyhow, I've got insurance (thank god), and just processed the claim.
Now I know that insurance doesn't care if it's rooted or not. I'm from Australia, the phone carrier is Virgin mobile and the insurance company is "Risk Insure".
Anyhow, I have put GPE on the phone as it's better than Bloatwiz, with custom kernel/recovery.
What I would like to know, is, how do I get it back to stock? Odin? I don't want to completely ruin the phone (brick it) and risk having the claim denied.
Or, if you have knowledge in phone insurance, is it really worth it? As in, do they care if it's rooted or not? I know it's different from warranty, but still...
Thanks very much!
Hmm..really..no one?
I want to send my phone away, just want to know if I needed to bring it back to stock, and if so, how would I do it. Nothing illegal/fraudulent.
Find the stock firmware for your device and flash through odin. Maybe the insurance company doesn't care about your root status or the rom u installed but you better be avoiding the risks. Most probably they will just have the screen repaired and send it back, as it is what they did for me..

Thanks for your reply.
I managed to find the stock release for my carrier and flashed through odin.
Hopefully I did it right, as it's rather hard to see without a functioning Screen.
I've now sent it off, so we'll see how it goes!
Just let us know the result.. Good luck
