Display is not even / plane with the case - HD2 General

Two days ago I noticed that the display of my HD2 is not plane with the surrounding case. When slidding the fingernail from left to right (portrait), there is like a 1 mm (or less) border when the case starts, the same is true for right to left.
As this border is not constant around the device, I am confused. Could you please check your device and tell me if your display is even with the device and looks like one piece?
I just cannot remember how it felt and looked when it was new ...
Any input is very much appreciated!

i am really lazy to search. but there was a thread about this

this has been posted about a few times. It seems most of us (myself included) have perfectly aligned screen and surround, , while some people have a small unevenness, perhaps high on one side, low on the other, or a slight lean towards one corner.
You could probably get it replaced if you are still in your first few weeks of use from your provider?

is this what you have?

frotzii, you are right, this is what I experience as well. So I am not the only one.
Thanks to all for the quick responses. Will try to get an replacement asap...

anyone else think the slide on their touch dual is getting loose?

Maybe its just mine, but I am very glad that i decided to opt for the 60.00 3 year squaretrade warranty with my ebay purchase. Mine has started to wiggle side to side, as in how the kaiser slides, but we all know the touch dual doesent slide that way. I was thinking that maybe the little rails that guide the top part of the phone up may be began to wear, but I havent had the phone for a month yet, and not a single drop just normal pocket wear. Is anyone else experiencing the little wiggle room like I am? Its not bad by any means yet, but if its started doing it already, i can only imagine it will get worse over the next couple months.
Agreed - a slight side-to-side wiggle but also the looseness makes using the power button to turn off the screen a little fiddlier
Totally agree, mine started to have some vertical play as well, in less than 14 days... so I have sent it back to HTC - awaiting advise if they will try and fix or replace?
hmm, seems to not be an isolated problem....and now that you mention it, it does make the power button a little tougher. Now i live in the US, and purchased mine off ebay, would i be able to send mine to htc as well? if not i can always fall back on my squaretrade warranty i took out on it as well.
mines getting a little bit wiggly.
i hope it doesnt get worse
And all this time I thought that little wiggle came from when I dropped it (on carpet) a couple of weeks ago...
I can vouch at least for mine, it has never been dropped or mishandled in the least bit. I've definatly got some side to side motion. Heres to hoping that it only gets so bad and then stops.....but somehow i dont see that happening
mine is 4 days old and has it too. i will watch it too...
This is actually my first slider phone, i've always had solid candy bar style phones, never even a clamshell type. I've just never liked the idea of having those kind of moving parts on my phone, seems like an easy break point. Now the touch dual has improved hardware specs from the touch right? or was it mainly just the slider keypad added to the dual? Im just curious because I love the interface on my dual, and honestly i dont use the keypad very much, i usually use onscreen keys. Maybe if i have to ditch my dual due to problems, i would just settle for a touch..... Actually i'd love to have an athena, I just dont know if the size would agree with my pocket heh.
it has umts. touch has only wlan. other than that it is the same i guess
got my replacement phone back and it is definitely more "solid" with little or no wiggle. The wifes is going pretty well after about almost 4 weeks.
mine is currently being checked out thru squaretrade, in the meantime I have since upgraded to an advantage!
Does anyone's Touch Dual slide loose vertically also horizontally??
...... my one does.....
yea, mine seems looser in both directions but still fully functional. the power button on top is now harder to use, which is somewhat annoying.
i, too, have the square trade warranty so may make use of it when the time is right.
i only have horizontal direction (the non sliding direction). the sliding direction keeps steady.
but it didn't increase since i got it. i will just watch it. maybe i use it to get a new device after a year
has anyone used the squaretrade warranty for this issue? how did they respond?

Touch has 200mHz processor 64mb of RAM, Touch dual has 400mHz and 128mb RAM. Don't downgrade.
So far mine still holds firm.. might be a problem on some models only.
mine wiggle too, doesn't line up perfectly. but having owned a stellar then orbit 2 (3 diff orbits) they all had build shortcomings. i voided the warranty on my touch dual by taking it apart to line it all up better. when i got to the slide screws, 2 weren't even tightened up properly, loose. so i relined it all up and it still off a little. i didnt venture into the screen case, and tbh, if im that bothered i could buy a new case with screen for about $80 USD and see if thats any better. but, i think it has it's own charm, and will stick... for now
mine wiggles, too, but since i have it under warranty, until it gets worse, I'm going to stick through it. hehe.

Is your Shift "solid" or not ?

Please, anyone else with a Shift that doesn't feel "solid" anymore after some weeksuse ?
Main issue being the screen that got loose hinges...when I touch the screen the display scrueeqs on it's hinges...
Also, I notice that the two rectangular screenholders on the bottom of the device have about 1mm "play" or "loosened up hinges, in it, after some weeks of use.
I'm really careful with my device, want to know if others have this issue too...
The screen on my shift is a bit too stiff, but it´s only two weeks old.
It also has a small movement on the two linear guides, half a millimeter or so.
What worries me is when putting it flat again, it makes a "clack" sound that makes me pity for the HDD.
I´ve attached a small black round sticker to the two magnets and it has improved a bit without affecting any movement.
Daniel
I've had mine since release day, it's had plenty of use, but the hinges still feel firm, no squeaks, no play in them... The slider mechanism is still smooth.
So no problems here.
Same for me. Still solid after 6 month.
Mine is little hard to turn the monitor from day one. When I contacted HTC, they said it is very common and it could be fixed once I start using it. I normally don't use keyboard, because I am more used to soft keyboard on Vista side, so I don't see much difference here.
Thanks

Poll: IS your xperia X1 case cracked? Please contribute.

PLEASE ONLY VOTE ONCE YOU'VE HAD YOUR DEVICE FOR A FEW WEEKS - As pointed out below, if you vote the day you receive it it most likely won't have any cracks... only to find them later (by which time you can't change your vote).
Hiya,
I'm thinking of getting an experia X1 to replace my TC...
...but I beleive there are build quiality issues as highlighted by the post above.
Can we have a poll to see the actual % of people suffering from this problem?
So:
Yes - I have, or I've had a cracked X1
or
No - My X1 is fine
That would help potential buyers make decisions a lot easier IMO.
Ta,
Oms.
No - My X1 is fine
on request added colors to poll.
hi,
I have a silver Xperia.
One crack on the phone after 2 days .
It was exchanged at the phone shop.
Nicolas
ive not had a problem yet..... since coming across this issue on the board, ive been keeping a close eye on how i handle the x1a silver. im sure it will crack sooner or later just because its seems so thin of a plastic in that area. i have not removed my stylus and am using the spare. it would have been better if sony used metal just like the battery cover.
Many thanks for the contributions...
...and many thanks to the mods for adding the colour options.
I'd be interested to see how this changes over the coming months...
PS O2 - do they have both colour options?
this thread will have many "false negatives". people buying the phone one day and click "no crack" the next. If the crack was to appear in the next few weeks, there would be no way to change the vote.

True... I've changed the original post to reflect this.
That said, there could be more 'false' reports by users who have had more than one device (ie - original faulty, and replacement fine).
It's good to see that there are people out there without faulty devices though..
well i haven't voted yet, but add me to the black-no-crack crowd for now. I've had it for little over 2 weeks. once a month passes, i'll vote in the pole, since most cracks have appeared around that time frame.
Any news from SE or HTC
Has anyone successfully challenged Sony Ericsson or HTC regarding this problem?
It's one thing to take the phone back to the shop, but you're just going to end up with a device that most likely will crack again.
My phone developed a crack very recently. I have had it about 6 weeks.
I think it may be due to the very poor battery cover design, which forces you to twist the device slightly when desperately trying to lever it off, or apply a lot of pressure when pushing it back on. As I have had a lot of problems with the battery cover and have also been taking it off A LOT (whilst swapping memory cards), I am sure this is the route of the problem.
these cracks look to be where the stylus goes into the case
maybe people are trying to put the stylus in at an angle and putting pressure on the case causing it to crack
ive had my xperia since uk launch and i havn't had any problems
No problems so far, mine fell already two times on a wooden floor from about 50 cm without any damage.

There's lots of discussion about the craked cases in the thread at the top...
...I only started this thread to gauge a percentage of faulty units.
It seems that 50% of the silver units are faulty (based on the info so far), with only about 5% of the black ones.
I know what colour I'll be getting!
Potentially bad news for some people:
I've contacted O2 and the chap I spoke to believes that the X1 is only available in silver...
...he can't tell me for sure because they don't have any stock.
I really hope it's not true, or else I'll have to defect to Voda.
Update:
Still no stock as of 20/12/08.
I noticed my black x1 is cracked at the bottom of the key pad and on the right hand side. The cracks are very hard to see on the black units which may explain why the percentage is lower.
You have to look real close to see the one at the bottom in the black plastic but the one on the right hand side in the silver strip is easy to see.
Im thinking of writing a letter of complaint, its not what I expect of a 500 squid phone!
well i haven't seen any cracks on my month old xperia.. but now i am facing a problem with the batter cover, it seems that the hinge where the covers supposedly clips on.. no longer clips on.. i had to put a tape on the cover just to keep if from popping out... i'm dis appointed with that.. the phone is great.. but the casing sucks
I ticked the "no crack" option a while ago - unfourtunatley i need to change it dam cracks
Why is the poll closed? Or did I just vote some time ago?
Well, my Xperia has slight cracks near the stylus hole. Damn it.
But if it is not getting worse I won't replace it. Takes far too
much time and stress.

I've had three X1s from O2 UK so far... each I've kept for a month plus.
None of them have suffered from cracks.
I've had an 08 W48, 08 W52 and an 09 W??.
Looks like the problem isn't with any of the O2 UK stock?

adhesive loosening on HD2?

--
thats how mine is but in the bottom. not a big deal but i did feel it
several people reported the same thing before. screen not flush all the way around. there's no adhesive, the screen slides out of the outer sleeve if you remove the screws in back.
Oh...
--
mine does it on the bottom.
it feels like there is a slight gap in between the bottom bezel and the screen.
It's not a problem at all, but it sure is annoying at times.
On the left side of my HD2 the screen is easier to push in at the top and bottom, but it takes a lot of pressure to make it "squeak".
If I had a cosmetic issue, you can bet I would be on a waiting list to get a replacement. The looks on these phones are nearly as important as the performance, IMHO.
oh i deff agree, @op, if you only just got it id be trying to take it back.
Same on mine at the bottom - just barely - if you slightly press between the usb and headphone jack you hear a slight (guess it sounds like) a click and you feel it slightly move. When the usb jack is plugged in it stops Some play and I don't think its worth returning - also don't think it will get worse. Case materials should have been a little more rigid. Think if you get a hard shell case or aluminum skin - when they become available you won't notice it. Talking to other guys with the HTC branded Euro version their build quality is a bit better. Think its pretty much the same with all HTC stuff - their branded models (TYTN TYTN II etc.) were build better than the AT&T versions - they also cost a lot more because they aren't subsidized.
Personally feel the HD2 of all the MS phones with the exception of the HTC TYTN I is the most solid. The Fuze which I just got rid of was probably the worst. The case was ok but the front keypad was pure junk - out of the box the thing felt like it was going to break and it never sat "square" in its opening. The USB ports on all of them were really weak and were super loose out of the box. The slide out keyboards always loosened up and had too much play.

For me, the Touch Pro 2 has top honors when it comes to "feeling" solid. My sister dropped it the other day and cracked the bevel, with a large triangle missing near the volume rocker and three other cracks on the bottom, top and opposite side.
I am encouraging her to return it and claim the insurance, but since there is no change in the quality of the phone's operation, she wants to keep it.
Again, for me, the TP2 seems more solid than the HD2, but the HD2 is very well-built compared to other phones. I am so paranoid about even putting my phone down on a hard surface, due to the sharp edges of the camera mount and the light metal case.
I will be installing my new invisibleSHEILD as soon as sirphunkee and I can make the time to meet somewhere clean (I have a 2yo at home ). I imagine my paranoia will drop a bit then...
I dropped my phone while working out at the gym.
I was on the treadmill, and dropped the phone from my hand to the treadmill belt, then it flew out (i was running pretty fast at speed 7) and ended up hitting the wall behind me. Well, I freaked out and ran over to check on the phone.
Even though I had NO protection, the phone was perfectly fine. Only a tiny scratch that's barely visible on the top left bezel, and everything was fine.
I really was surprised at the sturdiness of the phone.

My TP2 fell out of my hand in a parking lot, the thing didn't hit hard, but it left a small scratch on the screen (it was visible, but wasn't too obvious) and then some nicks at the corners of the device. It did look used. I returned it to T-Mo (I was still within 14-day remorse period) and used the money I got back to get an HD2 instead (for some reason I didn't qualify for either the full or the 11 month upgrade price, only 50 bucks discount... now that I think about it, I should have gotten it at full price, also, the day after it arrived (ordered online) T-Mo came out with the 2 for 1 smartphone, but alas, a new line was needed and I had no use for it).
I've dropped my HD2 at least 4 times since and there's not a nick on it. I figure the glass screen helps (as opposed to the TP2's plastic), even if it's a finger print magnet. I also have no problems with the screen or bezel being uneven, even after dropping it, nor have I had any single of the problems people complain about, so, go figure, I got the perfect production HD2.
Whew.... OK. Soooo glad to hear this isnt only my device. Mines is on the bottom. I also dont see it getting any worst and its so minor right now its probably not worth the hassle of returning. I tend to keep the gel case on it anyway..

I had an issue with mine creaking, on the bottom. Mainly when I was pressing the start key, or back. Got a replacement and it seems better. For a phone seriously delayed I don't get how the quality is so terrible.

Was it the camera lens or the casing around the camera?
After watching the tear-down video I could see how the camera casing could be improperly installed and loosen after a bit of handling, but I thought the lens was pretty solid...

I disagree. Not sure if I got lucky or not, but my phone is in perfect condition despite being a month old and spending most of that time in my back pocket.
I've sat on it countless times, dropped it from my hand to the floor twice and dropped it from the car holder to the console in my vehicle so many times I can't count.
The only problem I have is with the SMS freeze, and I've solved 90% of that by keeping my inbox clean. If I have the money for a class 6 microSD card, I'd bet on having solved the other 10% of my problems.
Since upgrading my radio, I don't have any problems with dropped calls, missing texts, loss of 3G or any of the other popular issues that seem to be plaguing the new owners.
Since bad news always travels faster and wider than good news, one simply can't infer from the issues being discussed here that they are the norm. I would suspect a very small percentage of the HD2 owners frequent the forums here, and of those another small percentage are having hardware issues.
I've been through a few of these new phone releases here in the past and from my experience I would say that this is pretty normal for the first few months of a phone's release. In another month or so there will be a firmware upgrade to fix the freezing and icon switching, then a lot of the issues will switch from hardware to software. Soon after that, I expect everyone will be clamoring for the release of a Windows Phone 7 ROM, followed a few months later by a newer, faster phone that everyone will be switching to. A cycle, vicious but almost predictable.

Offset Sliding Mechanism?

I've had my DVP for about 4-6 weeks now, and the phone is great. No major problems or complaints.
I'm just wondering if this issue was unique to my model though. When the phone is closed, the top edge of the screen seems like it's offset from the body by a few millimeters down. It seems like it is properly aligned when I close the phone and set it on a hard flat surface in a perfectly vertical position.
Is this the way the phone is supposed to be? Or is this slight defect unique to my particular handset?

THANK GOD YOU RECOGNIZE IT!
because no one else seems to pay attention to this kind of detail. Or at lease they dont know any better.
i mean how hard can it be? its OBvious!
I've gone through 6 hand set and they've all had some weird offset like you've spoken above.
I even created a thread about it and everyone was like ... "nope, mines fine"
what are the odds that 5 out of 6 handsets came misaligned?
Another thing too, if you look at the device from the side, you'd notice that the gap spacing is different when it's opened and closed from all sides because the sliding mechanism is stupid.
I would say return your device or make up some excuse to have it replace by dell.
don't worry you automatically have a 1 year warranty in case anything defective happens.
Or, just make up some stupid excuse. They'll send you a new device, and you send the old one back.
Dell is retarded like that.
if i were you, i'd TOOL them.
It's probably due to the magnet that is used for the slider action, which pulls it to one side.
I think it is just the design of the phone, I have had 3 DVP's now and all were slightly "misaligned"
THANK YOU. This has bugged me from day one, even though it's a terribly minor issue. One thing I've noticed is that there is no "gap" at the bottom of the phone, but on the top, the screen half of the slider is a few milometers further down.
And there was me thinking I was being picky!!
Also, I noticed when it is slid up the screen goes wonky by perhaps 1 degree.
I was considering returning but as it seems some people have been few a number of misaligned handsets it seems unlikely there'll be a truly perfect one... shame.
my top front is slightly misaligned by half a millimeter or so - I can notice it if I am looking hard. Glad its only a little bit as it seems the problem can be much worse judging by this thread.
The slider action however is awesome - especially when coming from a pre
Ya mine has the same thing. Literally millimeters off. I wonder if getting a case fixes this.
Luckily everyone I show the phone off too never notices
