PLEASE ONLY VOTE ONCE YOU'VE HAD YOUR DEVICE FOR A FEW WEEKS - As pointed out below, if you vote the day you receive it it most likely won't have any cracks... only to find them later (by which time you can't change your vote).
Hiya,
I'm thinking of getting an experia X1 to replace my TC...
...but I beleive there are build quiality issues as highlighted by the post above.
Can we have a poll to see the actual % of people suffering from this problem?
So:
Yes - I have, or I've had a cracked X1
or
No - My X1 is fine
That would help potential buyers make decisions a lot easier IMO.
Ta,
Oms.
No - My X1 is fine
on request added colors to poll.
hi,
I have a silver Xperia.
One crack on the phone after 2 days .
It was exchanged at the phone shop.
Nicolas
ive not had a problem yet..... since coming across this issue on the board, ive been keeping a close eye on how i handle the x1a silver. im sure it will crack sooner or later just because its seems so thin of a plastic in that area. i have not removed my stylus and am using the spare. it would have been better if sony used metal just like the battery cover.
Many thanks for the contributions...
...and many thanks to the mods for adding the colour options.
I'd be interested to see how this changes over the coming months...
PS O2 - do they have both colour options?
this thread will have many "false negatives". people buying the phone one day and click "no crack" the next. If the crack was to appear in the next few weeks, there would be no way to change the vote.

True... I've changed the original post to reflect this.
That said, there could be more 'false' reports by users who have had more than one device (ie - original faulty, and replacement fine).
It's good to see that there are people out there without faulty devices though..
well i haven't voted yet, but add me to the black-no-crack crowd for now. I've had it for little over 2 weeks. once a month passes, i'll vote in the pole, since most cracks have appeared around that time frame.
Any news from SE or HTC
Has anyone successfully challenged Sony Ericsson or HTC regarding this problem?
It's one thing to take the phone back to the shop, but you're just going to end up with a device that most likely will crack again.
My phone developed a crack very recently. I have had it about 6 weeks.
I think it may be due to the very poor battery cover design, which forces you to twist the device slightly when desperately trying to lever it off, or apply a lot of pressure when pushing it back on. As I have had a lot of problems with the battery cover and have also been taking it off A LOT (whilst swapping memory cards), I am sure this is the route of the problem.
these cracks look to be where the stylus goes into the case
maybe people are trying to put the stylus in at an angle and putting pressure on the case causing it to crack
ive had my xperia since uk launch and i havn't had any problems
No problems so far, mine fell already two times on a wooden floor from about 50 cm without any damage.

There's lots of discussion about the craked cases in the thread at the top...
...I only started this thread to gauge a percentage of faulty units.
It seems that 50% of the silver units are faulty (based on the info so far), with only about 5% of the black ones.
I know what colour I'll be getting!
Potentially bad news for some people:
I've contacted O2 and the chap I spoke to believes that the X1 is only available in silver...
...he can't tell me for sure because they don't have any stock.
I really hope it's not true, or else I'll have to defect to Voda.
Update:
Still no stock as of 20/12/08.
I noticed my black x1 is cracked at the bottom of the key pad and on the right hand side. The cracks are very hard to see on the black units which may explain why the percentage is lower.
You have to look real close to see the one at the bottom in the black plastic but the one on the right hand side in the silver strip is easy to see.
Im thinking of writing a letter of complaint, its not what I expect of a 500 squid phone!
well i haven't seen any cracks on my month old xperia.. but now i am facing a problem with the batter cover, it seems that the hinge where the covers supposedly clips on.. no longer clips on.. i had to put a tape on the cover just to keep if from popping out... i'm dis appointed with that.. the phone is great.. but the casing sucks
I ticked the "no crack" option a while ago - unfourtunatley i need to change it dam cracks
Why is the poll closed? Or did I just vote some time ago?
Well, my Xperia has slight cracks near the stylus hole. Damn it.
But if it is not getting worse I won't replace it. Takes far too
much time and stress.

I've had three X1s from O2 UK so far... each I've kept for a month plus.
None of them have suffered from cracks.
I've had an 08 W48, 08 W52 and an 09 W??.
Looks like the problem isn't with any of the O2 UK stock?

I know you guys are probably sick of this, but I have an 02 XDA mini in the UK. My question is, has anyone managed to get a new handset under warranty for any of the following common issues?
Very loose stylus, flaking paint, flaking buttons and now the handsfree socket has gone funny too.
As a trainee solicitor, I know that the Sale Of Goods Act requires any goods to be:
1. Free from any minor defects.
2. This includes appearance and finish.
3. Products should be durable.
I would say that the Wizard fails on all these criteria. I've only had this thing since March, so its another 5 months before I can renew my contract and get a new handset. I really think that for the cost of these things you should expect a reasonable looking product. It's very nice that it has alot of features, but if it looks a mess when I get it out of my pocket at work it makes me look unprofessional. For the cost that is unacceptable. Also, the dodgy audio jack is making my tube journeys ever more unpleasent.
If you have any of these issues, please just make a post anyway, even if you've done it before. I managed to get a new BlueAngel once by proving the whistling screen was a warranty issue thanks to people posting on XDA-Dev. PPC GEEKS - STAND UP AND UNITE
iive had mine replaced in USA many times due to this..
Brilliant! Anyone else?
i havent had mine replaced.. but I do have the black paint flaking off of the device... I didnt know that it would be covered.
My O2 XDA Mini S (Wizard) had flaking black paint, a loose stylus (with a strip of selotape around it to stop it falling out) and also no logos on the email or internet buttons as they'd worn off.
I have just had a replacement through insurance as I dropped the phone, but if I hadn't of had that, I'd have been very interested in getting it replaced under warranty as I don't believe the finish is robust enough to stand up to normal daily use.
Good luck!
Cheers guys, keep 'em coming. The more peoplesay they have this problem, the better chance I have of getting a new one on warranty.
Myself and 3 of my close friends have XDA minis. Every single one (including the 2 extras we have had because of faults or insurance) have suffered the stylus and flaking issue. It usually happens after about 2 months. The stylus thing is most annoying because those things are expensive when they fall out!
Hello, im buying Touch HD and I saw people whining about paint getting damaged and dropping off. I have had 2 Diamonds, people said the same thing about these but I have never had paint problem myself.
So could you tell do you have this problem or not with paint. other threads are spoiled full with "it sucks" comments from same people 10 times which makes it hard to read is it major or just some people scratching phones with keys.
Maybe even tell when and where you bought your device from. This effects do I buy HD now or when invisible shield comes for HD.
Thanks!
If you dont have touch HD please press "View poll results"
Thanks
I can only vote once so I will add this: 2 of my friends have the HD and 4 colleagues have the dianond or the pro. NONE of them have paint chipping, only one has a single chip as a result of dropping it on a brick floor.
At this point, the only thing that really puts me off about this phone is the endless complainin and whining... it must be a certain type of person this phone attracts because e.g. the iphone 3g had similar and even worse problems: freezes, very poor call recepion, memory leaks, ****ty battery performance, super weak cracking and scratching plastic back cover and still it gets a religious following of people who believe and support it till the bitter end... ignorance? i doubt it, the iphone is an amazing phone, just like the HD.
I've been using HD for about three weeks now, and don't have any signs of paint coming off anywhere. I carry it in my pocket without any shield or case (although I don't carry keys or anything like that in the pocket).

I think the reason people winge on here is because we are geeks. fact. we want it to be the very best technically and also to look at. The Iphone is aimed at a different market. maybe the more fashion concious? i.m happy with my HD and I've been using wm since the first spv. go and get yourself one. they are great, I wish the rom chefs would get on it though. hope dutty starts cooking soon!
Have been using it for the last 2 weeks and I have purchased from orange. I had no problem with the body /paint. I am quite a heavy user and don't use any case.
In addition, every day at least for 2 hours, I use it for listening to music over A2dp, using opera and rss hub as well as checking, replying email/sms, freezing issue people mention did not happen once.
what the heck - I'll vote on this one
phone is now 2 weeks old, direct from Orange.
I tend to be reasonably careful with it - buit no more so than I've been with any other phone really.
This means it usually (but not always) get's carried around in it's sock.
It doesn't get put in the same pocket as my keys.
I not at all careful though when putting the stylus in / out.
No paint issues at all, nothing, nada, zip. Looks exactly the same as it did when I got it out of the box
That said, from looking at the (few) posted pics on the other poll, I would say that there is definately a (small!) batch of phones out there where the paint hasn't been put on properly.
In my opinion (form what that's worth LOL), those owners should be sending them back for a replacement unit.
A chip of paint coming off - could be anything.
A chip of paint where it has left a spot of paint in the middle of the chip - that doesn't sound right to me.
ok I'll bite....
had device for just over two weeks. Overall very impressed, just found opera a little slow, but not unuseable.
Then the paint started coming off. I haven't dropped it, it's been well looked after. At the stylus slot, there is maybe a 2 mm strip where the paint has flaked off. I found the more i used the stylus, the more the paint came off.
Then I found it coming off near the home button. So it would only get worse.
IMHO this is not acceptable for a £500 handset. That is a LOT of money. I'd rather the handset finish was better than the trendy packaging.
So I mailed HTC and they told me to return it.
I will wait until this has been resolved before getting another.
I dont own one so I didnt vote, but yes I would say there is an actual issue with the paint.
Just look at these polls
xda-developers - 37,9% having problems
A swiss forum - 9,4% having problems
A german forum - 17,5% having problems
My paint go off. Less than one week of normal use (never fallen, never clashed or shocked). Scandalous, 600 euro paid.
My serial start with "HT843..."
Thank you for your replies. maybe there was some batch with problems, but it doesnt seem too big problem to make me not buy touch hd :>
less than 20% with problems - some user faults (not blaming anyone) - and some inaccuracy from poll, cant tell everyone who voted has HD.
Id say it isnt so big problem and since stores and HTC said to replace the device its fine for me. Sooon touch HD <3
I was fortunate enough to read about this before I started using mine, so I've been EXTRA CAREFUL, and haven't had any problems so far... >fingers crossed<
I've had no problems, but then I'm being quite cautious after seeing the paint chipping others have experienced before I got my HD.
ordered my HD yesterday, I hope it was just one faulty batch or something, getting invisible shield asap it comes to zagg.
for what its worth, i had my HD ordered on the 19th of Nov. and after using it for 3 days i noticed two extremely small paint peals on the top left corner. device has been cared for like a baby!
Time to buy invisible shield :> ordered mine 4 days ago, should be coming sooon to save my HD from scratches and stuff.
I got mine since 4 weeks now. Carry it without any cover in my jacket or my pants. Sometimes together with my keys "shame on me". It even made one hard contact with the floor from 5feet. Not one scratch. Got lucky.
But since I read here, maybe invisible shild isn't a bad idea at all.
are here already some closeups of HD with IS installed?
If i knew this i would happen, i would have never have bought mines.. completely amateurish
Yes my paint comes off too.
Have a spot on top, 1 on the left and one on the right side.
All three are non-scratches, but 'round-ish' spots were the paint fell off.
On the bottom side the paint around the USB connector flakes off very baddly.
Going over it softly with my nail, you can feel the paint chip off like mad.
I was one of the first to own an HD in the Netherlands.(reference to the possible batch problems)
I'll post photos and serial later.
Paint scratched but only by keys
I scratched my phone badly with a set of keys placed carelessly in a rucksack. In a few weeks of ordinary use no other parts of the phone (except the parts scratched by the keys) show any sign of damage - even around the USB port where I always try inserting the cable the wrong way around appears undamaged.
Hi guys,
I'm just a little curious. I've been lurking over the Xperia for a very long time now (ever since it was announced). I've read that people are having cracks all over the phone, even from people who have had the phones for as long as 3 months.
Why do people still purchase the phone knowing that the problem exists? Why blindly fork over so much money?
Oh, and by no means am I a trying to start a war or anything, I'm just curious. I've really been wanting to get this phone for such a long time now, and I'm really rather disappointed that Xperia's build quality is just crap.
What are your thoughts?
Cheers.
dude, there is a thread started by me.
In tat i say taht i threw my phone in a fit of rage, and it bounced off the floor, and hit two walls before falling down again. and alas, the slider is loose, but i can get it fixed. Other than that, no cracks, no broken lcd, no nothing.
And by the way, mine is a 08w44, this is the production batch everyone's having trouble with. So if my phone can come out with flying colours outta the torture i put it thro, i would say the build quality is good overall.
well it depends on what "crap" for you means, for your standards for a phone. But generally I would say people look these into a phone but not limited to:
1. Feature
2. Design
3. Advantages
4. Price
as for me I bought the phone not knowing the crack until 2 days that the phone is already with me and I'm looking at this forum for apps and custom stuff. You may consider things that Xperia can upset you but by far, its still the king of the hill.
with a few disappointments though, I still love the phone, and starting to hate the service.
The ones having problems with the phone are the ones that complain.
That's normal.
The ones without problems have no need not complain.
So don't think that a thread where all the cracks unite is representative for the whole series. Even a fraction of users have these cracks. Of course, that's still too many, but there is no need to be afraid of buying this phone because of this issue. The chance to get of a faulty one is very low.
Only a couple of production batches were affected with this issue
I've had 3 xperias sofar and none of them had cracks
What's more: IMHO, even a cracked xperia would be better than an Iphone or anything else out there

A cracked xperia X1 is a far better option than a cracked iphone 3g... (every batch of them seems to crack, same as their mac books)
Guys,
Thank you for your replies so far. I apologize, I guess I was wrong to be quick about assuming that a lot of Xperias have these problems. I still wish to get this phone, and have been bidding my time, hoping that the quality control will get better over time (perhaps HTC will change the materials or something).
Right now, I was wondering, are the cracks specific to colors (Black vs Silver)? Or are there issues on both colors anyway?
Also, which product batches are affected by this issue?
The problem is, if I purchase a gray market phone, say, from Amazon or something, and there is no warranty on it, and I do get a crack, how can I go about repairing the chasis?
Cheers.
Looking at the crack thread, it would seem that cracks were more common in the silver models.
throw mine on the floor yesterday and some1 accidently stepped on it. looks as new as when i bought it. and no problem at all.
Well
Looking at the cracks and their positioning it seems to me that the cracks seems to be due to a weak point in the design and some people just manage to break them. The one near the stylus I'm guessing happens because people are pulling it out at an angle and putting stress on the body, instead of taking it easy.
The one inside, by battery seems to be that theyre getting a "bending" force applied to them, back pockets anyone? sitting on them? Anyway, had mine a week, seems ok, dropped it a few times,no problems, got a crystal case on it now too for Xtra protection.
Will see how it goes after a while, but to be honest, if it does crack etc, i'm sure the provider would have to replace it?
Guys,
Well, if I buy it from Amazon, it comes with no warranty and it is an unlocked phone.
I also disagree that the price of X1a is the same as X1i. The reduced video capabilities should have affected X1a's pricing (which is why I am not even considering SonyStyleUSA).
Cheers.

Whoa, I'd love to have one of your phone. Though without the crack in my case, I still liked my phone. By the way, since you got three phone I was wondering, when I borrowed my cousin's black Xperia, the arc slider seem just a little oo shaky compared to mine, hers rebounds a bit when sliding in and out. mine doesn't .Don't you notice any differences in your X1s?

I don't know the laws in your country, but as far as I know, when you buy a new phone you always have warranty from the manufacturer as long as you have an invoice (bill?) for it.
Of course, you will have no provider where you can go, but sonyericsson itself has to be responsible.
As you may have read before, I was really complaining because of the poor voicecall quality, screen alignment with the plastic cover and many other flaws. I have replaced my device twice and got each time a different problem. I decided not to give up...
Today, I got my 4th HD2 and the earpiece problem is GONE!!
The first thing I did was to have a look at the screen. It is perfectly flush/aligned with the cover. It used to be either deeper somewhere at the corners or higher.
The problem with the light sensor doesn't exist anymore and after more than 12 hours of extensive testing, I can say I don't have any problem with machine anymore. Finally a flawless HD2.
One thing I've noticed ( because I'm used to register all my devices the 1st day I buy it ) that the serial number is almost the same as the 1st device having too many problems, the difference is like 372 only and the 4th HD2 is even older than all the previous handsets ( Manufacture date: 2nd of Nov. 2009 )
I believe that this is not a problem with some specific affected batches. IMHO, it is random...
Hope that helped
I didn't follow your previous thread. Do you have a summary on the problems you encountered and may I ask how you proceeded with your reclamation? Was it directly with HTC or through your vendor?
I also notice that my screen isn't perfectly aligned with the cover, it's a bit of gap to the top right, whereas on the top left i don't feel any gap. This doesn't kill me but if there are handsets that are perfectly made, I want one when I'm paying this much money. I also encounter sparkling sounds when talking, specially when using the speaker.

Actually I was forced to sell the devices because they refused to consider the problems as well known... I lost around 100 Euros but got a good device after all... you know we all like perfectionism
Some of the problems like I mentioned :
-The screen not correctly aligned with the plastic cover
-Crackling and noisy earpiece when making voicecalls
-Very loose hardware keys and buttons. They are not rock solid now but way better
-Light sensor behavior was somehow weird. Doesn't always work, dont ask me why
- Screen jitters like the ones posted on youtube.
you can also have a look here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=590425

It's a glass screen, no protector is required. Most HD2 screens are flush with the rubber/plastic sides - there isn't a recess, I would say the ones that aren't flush are manufacturing defects.
I've had 2 HD2s so far and both have the earpiece issue. The 2nd had what felt like poor fitting keys initially, but over the week I've had the phone they've bedded in nicely and now have perfect feel.
I'm just going to put up with the earpiece quality for now, it's not perfect but I'm sure future ROMs will reduce the volume which should be a good start.
Ah Im glad you finally got one that works for you
Hope you enjoy it
Im loving mine Im not as much as a noob as I was when I first posted a month or so ago, where I got flamed
I think I only have the two following problems:
-The screen not correctly aligned with the plastic cover
-Crackling and noisy earpiece when making voicecalls
The buttons are a bit loose but I didn't even notice that before someone else told me about it.
But I totally agree with you, I'm also a perfectionist, but I doubt I'll make any effort beyond contacting the support and see what happens. Specially the bad sound quality.
Oh well, I'm glad you finally found a nice piece. Take care of it now, don't drop it or scratch it
Ah you managed getting another one
Good luck with it! Treat it carefully

How did you get the information about the manufacture date of your device?
It would be really interessting for me to, when my device was builded.
Thank you in advance!
Xeon,
You seem to have gone through quite a few devices so, if you don't mind me asking, does your device have a rattle in the head of the device. I have got replies from quite a few people saying it is normal, but a few also don't have it. It's really starting to annoy me, I thought I'd live with it, but not sure I can now. Shaking the device hardly makes a sound, however, tapping it lightly near the camera gives me a big rattle.
Thanks in advance
My phone has a rattle toward the head area, and upon close examination, it appears to come from the camera at the top ofthe phone.
Since our phone doesn't havevs fixed focus lens, I'm assuming the rattle noise isthe autofocus mechanism. Therefore the noise is perfectly normal in my opinion.
Actually i think you are a bit too paranoic. That's fine, was same with me when I bought it and I think with everyone else. This feeling comes away after 1-2 months of actually using the phone rather than staring at it as at faberge egg from 2cm away everyday to find a scratch or a piece of dustd
p.s. - hardware keys are made that way for a reason and every hd2 has them the same way
NO actually mine doesnt ratltle but I discovered I got a faulty screen with the 4th device... shaking screen/cardio/untyped keys... the screen starts acting weird sometimes. IMO the last device is the worst as the noise problem during phone conversation wasn't solved and the distortion is so much annoying....
**** HTC, I am sorry to say it but nothing more to be expected from a device Made in Taiwan...
That's my last device, mark my words.

You know where the iPhone is made, do you? And besides the iPhone, pretty much every electronic device you're using...
[sarcastic] You're really lucky man! [/sarcastic]
My first HTC HD2 got broken and I've changed it, bought another HTC HD2.
Noticed that its build quality is really excellent compared to my old HD2 (that was one of the first produced), I've only had some weird problems with the touchscreen like yours, but I've solved it pressing it in the four HD2 angles: now the screen is more IN the device housing in the top right angle, but all of my digitizer problems are now solved.
Now my HTC HD2 is perfect.
Try with that.
Ouh, and remember that the noise in conversation can be a ROM problem!
Mine had too, but updating to the newer TMOUS radios I don't have it anymore!
Just software/network problems
And.. don't be paranoic, the PERFECT thing doesn't exist (talking of the rattle..)!

OK Apple is robbing people and HTC is following.. thank you.
And no.. Nokia is made in Finland and some other European countries including Germany. You can guess that by looking at the serial number that's why you get what you pay for...
Sony low end laptops are made in china but high end ones are made in Japan like the S/Z/T series... You see, you pay for a top notch device that much of money expecting it to be almost fault free. With HTC you never know, it's all about luck.
It makes me laugh reading how many people here got a faulty handset. When someone states a problem experienced with his heaset, the first answer is " seems you got a faulty device"
For god's sake a fault should not affect more than 0.5% of the devices.. but with HTC, it's like a feature; each client gets a different problem with the hardware. I can't tolerate the polls results.. Like the one with Weird touch screen behavior and issues. More than 55% have a buggy screen.. I know that it's not a case study nor a realistic accurate interpretation but it gives you a clear idea about what's going on.
I swear on my mother's life that this device( including all the previous 3 ) has the worst call quality a handset could produce. Believe me everytime I make/get a call I start blaspheming. I burned more than 1000$ on this device but thanks I took the lesson.
I still have my HD which is almost flawless compared to this product but slow as hell.
Don't mention iphone and apple things as I'm not apple fan-boy
Well, reasoning is obviously no strength of yours. Sad.

Alright, so right off the bat I just want to say that this isn't a doom and gloom thread (I hope), but it's an issue I wanted to ask you guys about since I'm on my 2nd phone now and I've had cosmetic issues with both. I want to love my phone, I just want one that won't give me problems first! I will post pictures soon, to show you guys what I'm about to describe below.
Both phones have had minor (but very annoying) imperfections involving the casing. My first phone was the most problematic. First off, the battery cover did not sit flush. I did not realize how much of a difference this made in terms of build quality until I got my second phone. My 1rst phone would creak and click when pressure was applied to the back and it just did not seem like a very sturdy device. This was not the case with the second phone (which had a back cover that fit perfectly) as there was no creaking or clicking, it felt rock solid just like its supposed to. Also, there was a small chip and discolouration of the teflon coating on the bottom left front face of the first phone. Again, nothing major but still not something that I was not pleased about given the price of the phone.
Unrelated but my first phone also had the purple tint issue which is the main reason I returned it and bought a new one (I couldn't outright swap because I don't live in the US). My second phone came in and luckily it did not have the tint issue. All I can say is WOW, what a difference it makes having a proper screen!! The black colours actually look crisp and dark, and there is absolutely no tint at low brightness.
So the screen was good. I checked the bottom left hand to see for any issues with the teflon, and there were none. I checked the backplate and like I mentioned earlier, it was perfectly flush. So far so good BUT.. again there were some cosmetic issues! Along the left side of the phone there was a tiny chip and some of the grey finish was off. Also, on the back, the bottom teflon piece did not sit flush with the rest of the device.
Once again, these are minor yet annoying things (but who knows, maybe I just have OCD!). The big issue from the first phone was the screen and the creaking, both of which are resolved with the second device, but I'm i'm contemplating whether I should return this one as well to go for one that is "perfectly built".. I mean, if this phone was store bought I would have no hesitation. I would just go there and make them open the boxes until I found a device that had no imperfections.. But it's just a real hassle having to continually ship my old device back, purchase a new one (while waiting two weeks to get credited back my $600 for the first device), and waiting for it to arrive. I also don't want to risk getting another phone with the purple tint issue..
Sorry for the long winded post, but basically what I wanted to ask was do you guys have any manufacturing imperfections with your phones??. I'm not talking about faulty screens or weak antennas, but actually design or cosmetic flaws. Do you guys have any and have you learned to just accept them or have you returned your devices and successfully gotten the "perfect" device.
Thanks, and hopefully I can get some pics up soon. Feel free to post your own so we can compare!
I got mine for free at this year's Barcelona MWC and luckyly i've had no issues whatsoever regarding hardware or aesthetics. An I say luckyly because obviously if I haven't bought it and I don't live in the US I would most definitely not get it replaced.

So which are you really looking for? Manufacturing defects or design flaws?
Are you looking for functional defects or cosmetic only defects?
Are you look for process-gone-completely-wrong defects or are you looking for minor imperfections resultant of process variation?
It is certainly possible to have a bad screen or a bad antenna as a manufacturing defect. There is also minor variation in any manufacturing process - this is normal. The trick is to keep the variation controlled well enough that the process consistently produces acceptable quality product. Note: No manufacturing process produces perfect parts, and minor imperfections are not necessarily defects. Normally, a design flaw impacts manufacturing quality only if the design requirements are too stringent for manufacturing capability.
I know you started out saying you did not want yet another thread bagging on the N1, but without clearer objectives, you've left it wide open for just that.
Mmm I love the build quality, it's very rigid and solid.
There is one imperfection that I noticed like 3 weeks of constant use.. The bottom piece, the one with "htc" on it, is a little bit more raised on one side (in comparison to the silver band on the back) than the other side. I'm talking 0.5mm difference that you can't see, only feel when comparing.
I'm writing that off as absolutely negligible and too tiny to even think about.

Same here. I thought about popping it off (it's just retained by a couple of clips) and attempting to re-seat it, but I see no problem with it. It's not like the 2nd batch of the iPhone 3G, where there was 1mm gaps between the plastic back and chrome bezel. I'm shocked no news blog picked up on that, it was fairly widespread.

Well it's the almighty apple, they don't wanna disappoint their readers that the calculator that they paid $500 for is also cheaply built.
I have a question that (um..) kinda relates to this. I'm having a hard timing saying this so bare with me. You know when technology is first released that is has alot of problems and bugs but overtime it seems that the problems die down because the companies that produce the phones (xboxs, iphones, ps3, etcs) get smarter and make things differently or better...
Well my contract with t-mobile is up in 46 days and I was planning on getting a nexus one. I don't plan on getting it engraved. My question is that do you think my phone will be made when I order it or do you believe its been sitting in a warehouse since March 26th (guess) just waiting for somebody to place a call? I've seen those cool "making of nexus one" videos on youtube and figured i'd ask you guys. Thanks to whoever answers.
yup, i have similar issues. i initially thought they actually shipped a refurb unit to me. turns out i'm not the only one. now i'm not that worried

attn1, I could have been more clear in my last statement, 'design flaw' was a vague term. I meant cosmetic only defects and minor imperfections as a result of process variation. I know that with any product that is mass produced on an assembly line you will get variation from device to device. This thread wasn't meant to bash this variation but just to compare what other people have experienced with their phones.
Like I said, my first phone was awful, it had both functional and aesthetic problems. My second phone seems to be fully functional but still has a few (albeit minor) aesthetic imperfections. I must say though, I got my Brando Gel case in today and it looks great on the phone! It covers up the unevenness on the bottom teflon piece as well as the blemish on the left side of the phone very nicely.
My nexus came with a scratch or bubble on the inside of the screens glass. They told me i'd get a refurb in exchange(even though it's about a week old), I told them i'd think about it. Think i'll be calling back and demanding a brand new device.

That kinda scares me because I'm picking up a nexus one in 46 days (contract with t-mobile will be up then) and I dont want something like that to happen to me. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I would demand a new one too
Have had no issues with mine until yesterday when the trackball stopped scrolling left. Refurb sans engraving rolling in tomorrow. All told still much better quality then my G1 or Blackberry.

No tint nothing amiss as far as build quality that I can notice. This is the best built (visually and as far as any creakiness or such) phone I have ever owned and the first one I have had without any perceptible flaws out of the gate.
OK! So to all of you who has a Nexus One with cosmetic imperfections on the BOTTOM plastic piece on the BACK, with the labeled HTC, i may have a cure for you.
So, with me I HAD a slight imperfection on the right side, about a 1mm gap. It was annoying and I have some slight OCD (used to be worse). One day last week or so, that part of my phone became VERY hot, probably 101-105℉. While that plastic was hot, it was a little bit bendable. I used a rather large amount of force, and over about three times of doing this, the plastic is flush with the metal, and the rest of the phone.
So try that if you're super partial to your device like me. Or if you dont wanna deal with HTC, like me.

"refurbished" sounds bad but really its a more taken care of device isn't it? It's been tested to a further degree so its more likely to come without flaws perhaps or am I reaching?

no. you're reaching high... its been refunded and fixed.. haha
so you are using someone else's phone who now owns probably a new device. brand new is the way to go, especially if your device is a week old...
