Anyone ? currently on Tmobile with a HD2 getting 3G? or Edge? - HD2 General

I'm wondering if there is anyone that has an HD2 that is on Tmobile.
What data, EDGE or 3G, are you getting.
I understand Tmobile uses 1700 & 2100, and that there are other treads that have said the current version available are not suppost to work on Tmobile.
If there is someone!
If you would please, I would like to know what some of you registry keys contain for what ever service you get. Please specify.
These are the keys I'm asking about
HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\BandType
ItemName1
ItemName2
ItemName3
ItemName4

I'm currently using a HD2 test phone for Tmobile in the US (it has a splash screen when it boots up. You know... "Stick Together").
It does work with 3g and EDGE. I'm scared to flash a new ROM because I'm not sure I'll continue to get 3g. But in answer to your registry questions... Here is what is in my reg:
ItemName1 = Auto
ItemName2 = GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900)
ItemName3 = GSM(1900+850)
ItemName4 = UMTS(2100+900)
theisdept I'm curious if this helps you. please let me know.
And if anyone knows if I can keep 3g in the US on Tmo with a cooked ROM, let me know. Should I look for a ROM that won't change my Radio?

3G is hardware related. So if you change roms, it won't affect your 3g connectivity. I wasn't even aware any versions of the HD2 worked on T-Mobile's 3g network yet. You are one lucky man! I can't wait to get my hands on the hd2

I'm always confused about this.
Is the HD2 in Edge mode when you see the H in the bar?
Also. Is Edge faster or slower than 3G?

I do consider myself lucky. I just know someone who knows someone... I heard the Tmous version will have more ram when it is released (rumor = march 24th). It is a sweet device already.

normally you'll see edge when a phone is on edge and 3g when a phone is on 3g not sure about on the hD2 or other phones.
thats just my experience with the g1 and mytouch
and 3g > Edge

H > 3g > e > g

H = HSPA = 3.5G (fastest, this is a bolt-on to 3G. Your voice is '3G', your data is '3.5G')
3G = UMTS = 3G
E = EDGE = 2.5G (Bolt-on to G. Your voice is '2G', your data is '2.5G')
G = GPRS = 2G (slowest)

If you see H then it is in hsdpa - 7.2mbps. I have seen this.
If you see 3 then it is in 3G I presume - 384kbps. I have not seen this icon personally yet as 3G always turns to H when i try to get data.
E for edge - 128kbps or so. quite slow but ok for email. I have seen this.
Gsm - xxx??? dunno, but slow - I have seen this as G.
The phone stays in 3G mode until data is needed then it flicks into H mode.

Why is there no 1700 (aws) band listed in your registry as this is needed for Tmous. Not saying you are lying, but I'd like to see some speedtest results while you are on Tmo 3g.

Thank you mazzarin and chris_ah1,
All is clear to me now. When I use network access (exept wifi) it will alway go from 3G to H, and when done back to 3G

I don't know why there's no 1700. This isn't a european phone. It's a test phone for Tmobile USA. I know someone who works at HTC in America. They let me use it. It doesn't have the official release rom. I've even flashed a custom rom, and it still has 3g. The speedtest below is actually with my laptop tethered via USB cord to my HD2. If anyone wants 3g with their HD2, I'd suggest waiting until Tmobile USA releases it, as I gather that it is entirely hardware related. I also heard from Tmobile tech support that the US version will have more RAM. I don't know if the Tech was referring to the 576MB ram that we can all get right now with the latest Radio (2.08.50.08_2)
Here's the speed test results:
EDIT: I've seen a spec sheet on the web for the Tmous version. It is claiming 576MB of RAM, which is already available on most units (my test phone included). But according to the leaked spec sheet, the ROM is doubling to 1GB for the Tmobile versions. We'll have to wait and see if this is true.

HSPDA ???

Hi!
Now I think I may get a few people thinking I am wierd but hey!! I would like to know a bit more about HSPDA. I know it is a new speed access for data. But how do i activate my Ameo to use it and does anyone know where i can get a coverage map to see where i can use it??
HSDPA is activated on W'n'W Plus by default - not sure how you tell on the Ameo - some ROMS display H instead of U/3G but the Ameo doesn't appear to.
On my HTC Advantage on Cingular it dispalys 'H' when I am in a HSPDA coverage area.
yes mine displays H at times
I have been wondering the same thing (i.e how to tell when the Ameo is using HSDPA).
In the UK, I have never seen an "H" displayed with my Ameo on web'n'walk
Like I say, on other phones it depends on the ROM - I have never seen an H on my Ameo and have been getting far faster than 3G speeds!
On T-Mobile UK, wherever there is 3G, there is HSDPA. The T-Mobile ROM does not change between displaying 3G and H - no need becauise 3G = H on T-Mobile UK.
I forget the max T-Mobile speed at present - about 600k I think. If I remember correctly, they are aiming to double that in places by the end of the year.
No need to configure an English Ameo for HSDPA.

i don't think what you say is correct. There are lots of area where you can only get 3G instead of HSDPA with T-mobile. I have DOPOD U1000 but I am using T-mobile Sim Card. It's clear to me that most of the time in London, i will get H display on my phone, but once I moved out to other place, I start seeing 3G signal only. And yes there is a speed difference. And I have also run tests on the HSDPA speed, on average i am getting 1000k (1M), the top speed i ever got is 1200(1.2M).
Could do with your support buddy...

Hey wu. Haven't seen you in a while. Hope all's well. I would have thought the Athena project would be of interest to...plus with your contacts, your help would no doubt be invaluable to us all.
Anyway no sales pitch. Just hope you join in, as we now have 2 great developers on board and are soon to receive 2 devices. OK enough plugging for now.

The info comes straight from several sources at T-mobile - all their 3G coverage is also HSDPA. However, I have an Ameo, which only ever shows 3G.

that is certainly wrong, i have seen 3G and HSDPA separately in different location. The speed difference is huge. BTW, you shouldn't listen to mobile operator, most of the time they don't know what are they talking about. Guess what, some of them don't even know there is a 3.5G (HSDPA). (I mention this to them, and they ask me to google it !)

Hardware USA ATT 3g capable? (looking for confirmation?)

Hi,
Has anyone been able to confirm whether or not blackstone is truely 3g capable and it will just take some software effort to tweak/enable 3g support?
Thanks.
EDIT: sorry, I'm in the us and I always forget. let me clarify, does it support 850/1900 ? Essentially, is it possible by only modifying the software to make it work on ATT 3g network for the data?

I've had my Touch HD in the California Bay Area for about a week. Lately, the G icon has appeared way more often. In fact, today I watch as I walked out doors for 15 minutes to lunch with the G symbol displayed. Previously, I thought it was bad signal that randomly showed 3G while it was searching for a network. But I am seeing the G icon is areas of known good reception. I'm on the ATT network.
Maybe there's hope.
G stands for GPRS, which is actually worse than EDGE, but probably the phone did use EDGE, phone just doesnt have own icon for that one. Available icons are G, 3G, H, from lowest to fastest: GPRS/EDGE, 3G, HDSPA/HSUPA

The G is showing up..and I am on AT&T

So I looked down at my phone last night and instead of the usual E hanging out above my bars, there is a G. I am on AT&T...how is this possible???
Does the G mean something other than 3G? (2G? I thought that was Edge...hence the E).
Sadly, it means GPRS. Even slower than EDGE.

AFAIK listed from slow to fast
G = GPRS (like gunnner mentioned)
E = EDGE ( think 2g)
3G = 3G ( 3rd generation)
H = HSDPA ( High Speed Downlink Packet Access)
I have only seen H on nexus one in pictures.

I'm surprised he got G thought that was impossible to still get that after seeing all those A&TT commercials about coverage.

hey, G is still coverage!
HSDPA is actually still a part of 3G, the display icon when in use is not enabled by default likely because it would confuse the holy living CRAP out of the masses (and still confuses a great deal of XDA'ers). H is more like 3.5G. Rom's like CM5 have enabled it so that when HSDPA is in use, the 3G icon changes to H, and it goes back to 3G again when UMTS is in use.
CDMA networks have a technology (spectrum) limitation that requires them to move to 4G (WiMax or LTE) sooner than GSM providers. Right now I believe Verizon is building out LTE, and Sprint is building out WiMax.
Personally, I'll be happy when the carriers put in the backbone necessary everywhere to support the wireless speeds.

when u see the H you are indeed using hspa. even if you dont have a custom rom you may still be using it, you just dont get an icon because it would confuse the average consumer as stated by someone else in this thread.

Recommended radio for ATT

I have a unlocked tmob hd2, using it on ATT.
I get Edge ( as expected ) but that seems to be very slow....( probably this is the speed of edge)
Is there any specific radio version for using with ATT.
Any user experience is appreciated
I am using the tmobile hd2 on ATT and the speed seems fine to me. I am usually on wifi and really dont take notice of it. then again, how can you test the speed to know that you are getting true EDGE network speeds?
Also, I am using a custom ROM [Manila version touch x-treme 2.30.6.30],
with radio version 2.08.50.08_2
Bytheway, is it even possible to change the radio version? I would think that whats on the tmobile phone is specifically for their network.

Funny thing is my unlocked HD2's radio reception and quality is much better running on ATT compared to when I had the T-Mo sim chip in. I must have some really crappy towers around me or ATT just saturates the area or the radio wasn't tested very well on the T-Mo network. Regardless, this puppy runs great on ATT. ATT Edge is better than T-Mo Edge as well. Go figure.
When i checked the speed 3g vs edge on att its huge
download speed 1574 vs 124
Upload speed 331 vs 19
Edge really feels so slow, especially after used to 3g speeds...
Probably get telstra then

Hmmm, my download speeds on Edge match or slightly exceed your downloads for 3g. My downloads for T-Mo averages less than 100kb. I do get better results not using the ATT proxy though.

Radios aren't assigned to carriers. What works on T-Mobile will work on ATT. If you are on ATT using an unlocked T-Mo HD2, no matter what radio you use, you will not get 3G - different bands.
Know that very well but was wondering which radio would give the best reception for edge

Do they really have a separate hardware for different bands? I doubt it, would be pretty expensive. If it's a software, I guess we can expect somebody to hack it and enable all HSDPA AT&T bands

It's actually for bands, so yes, there's separate hardware. Carriers do this to help instill customer loyalty and retention, among other things. There simply is no way to "hack it and enable all HSDPA AT&T bands"
SO If I have a TMO HD2 and have AT&T service - If I am a big internet user - I shouldn't bother with this phone? My Fuze will be faster? Or is it worth keeping the HD2 on At&T? I love the phone - the size, the screen, the features - ect... but If it is going to be a slower user experience for data I rather just sell it.

It just depends on 1) how available wifi is as an option for you, and 2) if the EDGE speeds (in your area) are acceptable for when you'd have to be on that (no wifi available). My guess is that they probably won't be, especially if by "internet use" you include a lot of webpages, and/or streaming of any kind.
HSDPA? I always have an H on my phone - can the TMO HD2 do HSDPA on AT&T? If so is that different? I know I am a noob when it comes to bands.

No, HSDPA is just a higher-speed 3G spec...it uses the same band ranges as regular 3G, so the same incompatibility still exists between AT&T and Tmo

Visit that site from your phone's browsers for a speed test. You'll probably get slightly different results using IE vs Opera, so try it several times to be confident in your results.
Avoid mobilespeedtest.com if you come across that site...their results are inconsistent and unreliable.

[Q] will APN change to fast.tmobile help with H speeds?

Alright here it is. stock rom, rooted 4.2.2. I dont have LTE in my area so this is not the purpose of this. My issue is my speeds suck. I haven't experienced more than 7 mb down ( this happened only once to date) even in an excellent areas per t mobile's coverage map. I tried selecting t mobile's network and not leaving it on automatic. No difference.It goes from H to E and I never get H back. even turning off data, or toggling airplane mode in said areas don't give me back H. I havent flashed any custom roms because simply, with every custom rom ive tried theres always some kind of bugs to live with ( no disrespect to our excellent devs out there :angel and stock is most stable.
Now im not looking for 20mb down. I just want actual H or H+ speeds. I considered trying a new sim. I got a new micro sim when I got my n4 from tmobile but i dunno maybe I got a wonky one? Any other rooted stock users try this? Also if I do tweak APN settings is flashing the older baseband necessary or no for H speeds? Thanks

I doubt it but it doesn't hurt to try.
i had a worse connection and worse speeds using that apn without lte.
your data speed would only be 20mb+ if, and only if, tmobile has hspa42+ in your area. most of tmobiles coverage is hspa21+. youll never see 2omb download speeds on hspa21+, maybe around 10-14mbps. the data speeds would also depend on how much of the network is being used at the moment, how busy it is. so, generally, youll get your highest speeds late at night/early morning.
just to confirm is "excellent" on the coverage map considered hspa42+?
