So I looked down at my phone last night and instead of the usual E hanging out above my bars, there is a G. I am on AT&T...how is this possible???
Does the G mean something other than 3G? (2G? I thought that was Edge...hence the E).
Sadly, it means GPRS. Even slower than EDGE.

That is sad...what would 3G look like? I am guessing maybe a 3 and a G?
Thanks for the info!
you would be correct. 3G
AFAIK listed from slow to fast
G = GPRS (like gunnner mentioned)
E = EDGE ( think 2g)
3G = 3G ( 3rd generation)
H = HSDPA ( High Speed Downlink Packet Access)
I have only seen H on nexus one in pictures.

On a theme you can change the 3G icon to the H and make believe
I'm surprised he got G thought that was impossible to still get that after seeing all those A&TT commercials about coverage.
on cyan's rom I go from 3g to H alot during the day. Where i am at im mostly on H.

hey, G is still coverage!
HSDPA is actually still a part of 3G, the display icon when in use is not enabled by default likely because it would confuse the holy living CRAP out of the masses (and still confuses a great deal of XDA'ers). H is more like 3.5G. Rom's like CM5 have enabled it so that when HSDPA is in use, the 3G icon changes to H, and it goes back to 3G again when UMTS is in use.
CDMA networks have a technology (spectrum) limitation that requires them to move to 4G (WiMax or LTE) sooner than GSM providers. Right now I believe Verizon is building out LTE, and Sprint is building out WiMax.
Personally, I'll be happy when the carriers put in the backbone necessary everywhere to support the wireless speeds.

GPRS is still 2G, while EDGE is 2.5G, like how there is 3G and 3.5G(HSDPA)

I'm curious if.the custom ROM's enable the H icon only or if they actually enable HSDPA. Reason I ask is because I'm only getting UMTS- like speeds and I've heard others mention they're getting much faster speeds in my area.

when u see the H you are indeed using hspa. even if you dont have a custom rom you may still be using it, you just dont get an icon because it would confuse the average consumer as stated by someone else in this thread.

Hi,
Has anyone been able to confirm whether or not blackstone is truely 3g capable and it will just take some software effort to tweak/enable 3g support?
Thanks.
EDIT: sorry, I'm in the us and I always forget. let me clarify, does it support 850/1900 ? Essentially, is it possible by only modifying the software to make it work on ATT 3g network for the data?

erm... if you mean by video call, i dont know, if you mean by download speed, yes.

Not yet.....
I've had my Touch HD in the California Bay Area for about a week. Lately, the G icon has appeared way more often. In fact, today I watch as I walked out doors for 15 minutes to lunch with the G symbol displayed. Previously, I thought it was bad signal that randomly showed 3G while it was searching for a network. But I am seeing the G icon is areas of known good reception. I'm on the ATT network.
Maybe there's hope.
G stands for GPRS, which is actually worse than EDGE, but probably the phone did use EDGE, phone just doesnt have own icon for that one. Available icons are G, 3G, H, from lowest to fastest: GPRS/EDGE, 3G, HDSPA/HSUPA

That's incorrect. There is an E icon for EDGE (I see it right now). I guess there are 4 icons. G, E, 3G, and H.

Hey, guys i have tmousa HD2. And I love this ROM CleanEX UDT HQ 3.00 Without FSS.. It's the best rom for me. The only problem.. that H icon signal. I want a 3G speed icon signal. it just looks better. Could i change that with a Cap. file? Thanks guys.
if im not wrong, H means your getting a faster speed. you want that
i was told that it's just a H icon but i'm still getting 3G speed. i really would love to have the 3G speed.
i read
H is 3.5 pretty much 4g speeds, your fine dont worry about it i wish i had that, im jus getin 3g where are you ?? im in nj pretty good tmobile service in the metro nyc area

its your reception in your area and or availability.
and H is much faster than plain ol' 3G.
Look for Advanced connections there you can enable or disable HSDPA (H)
The HSDPA Icon can be disabled in the Advanced Config (link on post #4) program at:
Data Connections->HSDPA icon: Enabled (default)
Now for a lesson in speeds:
Code:
3g: (Third-Generation) 14Mbit/s downlink.
HSDPA: (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.0 Mbit/s.
HSDPA+: (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access: Plus) 42 Mbit/s downlink
and 84 Mbit/s with release 9.
4G: (Fourth Generation) 100MBits/s downlink for mobile, 1GBit/s downlink
for fixed lines.
I like to think for HSDPA as sort of like the HOV (or carpool) lane. You can't really legally go faster, but the traffic there is routed with much more precision and thus is likely to travel faster over a long period of time.
You can not (of course) disable HSDPA without also killing 3G, but that wasn't what you were asking anyway.
Hope that helps!
I get all three (H, 3G, and E) icons using kumars 1.6 rom... but when there's a H above my bars, it still says 3G T-Mobile in the top left hand corner so I dont know if thats actually 3G speed or H speed...

HSPA is faster 3G, so it's still 3G. I just like to think that the "H" is an indication that T-Mobile is testing HSPA in my area . All the coverage maps say we don't have HSPA in my area yet. I'm using EnergyROM and I've noticed when I see the H, that if I actually use the data connection the icon will quickly switch to 3G. But it's really faster than when I start a data connection with the icon earlier just showing 3G instead of H.

I've had read that T-mobile HSDPA is technically or can be faster than Sprints 4G, but your lesson says different
I think what he's saying is that in a lot of cooked roms when it shows the H it's not really H speed. It just shows the H when it should actually be showing 3G.
I did a little research and I found that alot of cooked roms are based off of euro roms and H is cooked into them even though you are not getting "H" speeds. you can also go to mobilespeedtest.net and check your speed to see if indeed you are getting those speeds. it will tell you if you have edge 3g or H speeds. pretty cool
I live in Central Florida.....Winter Haven area to be exact and I am in Edge at home but if I travel 5 miles north of home I'm in 3G and another 3 miles north I'm in "H" all over up there. So I believe at home I am right near the edge of the high speed service in my area...
Traveling around the state I am in either 3g or "H"
Kinda crazy around here. It jumps all over depending on where your at.

I agree that testing can help verify speed, but I thought a ROM based off the Euro HD2 would never work on a T-Mobile USA HD2?
just recently a guy posted about the *#*#4636#*#* code and changing network preference. well fooling around at work yesterday i tried it out and i picked "WCDMA only" and before this, i get prettu good 3g and H signals but very few edge spots (inside). after i selected that though my signal was still on H speeds so i didnt think much of it but its been 15 hours and ive been around and my phone hasnt even as much as dropped down to 3g. so maybe or maybe not this could help you guys out but i just wanted to give a heads up. try out for yourself
p.s. i also heard it helps with battery because your phone isnt always busy switching back and forth between network.

Well, according to T-Mobile's G2 Guide:
H = Connected to the fastest 3G networks (UMTS or HSDPA)
E = Connected to the second-fastest network (EDGE)
G = Connected to a 2G network (GPRS)
You will see an "H" while you are using 3G. This means the "H" is shared for UMTS or HSPA as well ("4G"). I don't agree that this is how it should be noted, but that is how it is noted on the G2 without any 3rd party widgets installed.
H and G only in West Texas
Out here we are still stuck on a 3G network. (No idea when HSDPA or + will be here), but NO EDGE, unless you roam... It is 3G/H or GPRS... It kinds sucks, thank goodness for WIFI..

Sorry you are wrong. H = 3G or 4G (HSPA or HSPA+)
I have that widget too, but the OP never said that widget is what he was looking at. Presumably, he was looking at the stock notification on the phone, showing "H". My point is that he would see "H" while on 3G or 4G, so he'd only be able to tell the difference by speed tests or some other measurement (such as a 3rd party widget).
I wanna get more replies and see from more people, the problem with me is, at school in campus the signal is really spotty, where I can even have 3 or 4 bars and be still on edge.
Another thing is where when the signal goes haywire, it will drop from either utms or hspa into edge and the data connection will just stop and it won't work unless I get the H. Its been happening for a week now and I'm up to a week on my remorse period and want to handle this before its too late.

I think that they were saying for the OP to download that widget so that they will know when they are on HSPA+ or 3g. I'm pretty sure they didn't think the OP was already using the widget or they wouldn't have suggested downloading it.

3g = h.
h = 3g.
Only custom roms show H. But even if it "just" shows 3g, you're still connected to the same network.
It's like the difference between pancakes and flapjacks. Some people call em pancakes. Some people call em flapjacks.
In the end they're the same damn thing.
^ true, but sometimes in my area I will have 3G, sometiems H, and sometimes Edge... (on my Nexus One). Seems odd that the phone makes a distinction between 3G and H if there is no difference. I also prefer the H and wish it showed on my phone (Vibrant this time) instead.

The distinction sometimes refers to basic UMTS, but at least in the United States, every UMTS tower has HSPA upgrades. The reason the distinction even started was because in Europe, there were many towers that were UMTS-only without HS[D/U]PA upgrades. That's not the case here.
On the other hand, now ROMS sometimes show H for HSPA+ areas. That is all fine and dandy, except that your Vibrant doesn't go faster than 7.2mbps HSDPA, or 5.6mbps HSUPA. It's not like when your phone is showing "H", that you're magically going to get faster speeds than your phone was designed to achieve.
So when it comes back to the OPs question, of "connecting" to a faster network, it's irrelevant. Once you're on 3g, it's all the same network. HSPA+ and HSDPA and UMTS are all the same network - just different data upgrades. And your phone will ALWAYS try to access the fastest data upgrade that it can.

it's depend on the phone i think. Before i switch to the vibrant (3G display), I used HD2.
On the HD2, i got H notification all the time. And speedtests on both phones yielded same results.
^^ great read, and I understood all of it... I just never understood why sometimes I got 3G and sometimes I got H in the notification bar, makes sense I suppose. I realize the same speeds were usually achieved.

Since the HD2 isn't a 4G phone, "H" is the almost equivalent; I think it's 3.75 or something like that. So, when you see the H, highest "letter", you are getting faster than 3G speed.
T-MO doesn't even have a 4G network, strictly speaking. But even if it had, your HD2 wouldn't be able to support it.
The max you can get is indeed 3.75G or HSPA, with up to 14/6 mbps down/upload speeds respectively. This is shown by the 'H' icon.
The 3G icon should refer to a UMTS connection, which is considerably slower than H. Some builds however also use the 3G icon when actually you're on a HSPA connection. This is just the icon, the connection is always as fast as possible.
E stands for Edge, an elder (and less battery consuming) protocol with much slower transfer speeds.

If T-Mobile doesn't have 4G, then why do they sell two 4G phones and advertise 4G? Does Sprint not have 4G,either? They do have 4G, it's just that some areas are not utilizing it yet.
No, they don't have 4G. They claim they have, and the speeds are faster than a typical HSPA network, but it's not 4G.
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscent...doesnt_have_4g_and_theres_no_santa_claus.html
I'm not sure on Sprint, but at first they sure falsely advertised their network as 4G. They may have upgraded it to true 4G by now, again, I'm not sure.
Edit: nope, all carriers are still lying about their 4G network.
If its not 4G, they why are they all calling it 4g?
And if 4G is non existent since no carriers have it, then wouldn't HSPA really be 4G?
I don't get this. So Evo users don't get 4G?
Okay third time, no it's not 4g it's an upgraded kind of 3G. I have even included a link about it, click it and read some.
