Now I think I may get a few people thinking I am wierd but hey!! I would like to know a bit more about HSPDA. I know it is a new speed access for data. But how do i activate my Ameo to use it and does anyone know where i can get a coverage map to see where i can use it??
HSDPA is activated on W'n'W Plus by default - not sure how you tell on the Ameo - some ROMS display H instead of U/3G but the Ameo doesn't appear to.
On my HTC Advantage on Cingular it dispalys 'H' when I am in a HSPDA coverage area.

I have been wondering the same thing (i.e how to tell when the Ameo is using HSDPA).
In the UK, I have never seen an "H" displayed with my Ameo on web'n'walk
Like I say, on other phones it depends on the ROM - I have never seen an H on my Ameo and have been getting far faster than 3G speeds!
On T-Mobile UK, wherever there is 3G, there is HSDPA. The T-Mobile ROM does not change between displaying 3G and H - no need becauise 3G = H on T-Mobile UK.
I forget the max T-Mobile speed at present - about 600k I think. If I remember correctly, they are aiming to double that in places by the end of the year.
No need to configure an English Ameo for HSDPA.

i don't think what you say is correct. There are lots of area where you can only get 3G instead of HSDPA with T-mobile. I have DOPOD U1000 but I am using T-mobile Sim Card. It's clear to me that most of the time in London, i will get H display on my phone, but once I moved out to other place, I start seeing 3G signal only. And yes there is a speed difference. And I have also run tests on the HSDPA speed, on average i am getting 1000k (1M), the top speed i ever got is 1200(1.2M).

Agreed. I too get an average of 1k but mine too tops out at about 1.1-1.2.

The info comes straight from several sources at T-mobile - all their 3G coverage is also HSDPA. However, I have an Ameo, which only ever shows 3G.

that is certainly wrong, i have seen 3G and HSDPA separately in different location. The speed difference is huge. BTW, you shouldn't listen to mobile operator, most of the time they don't know what are they talking about. Guess what, some of them don't even know there is a 3.5G (HSDPA). (I mention this to them, and they ask me to google it !)

Well, I have T-Mobile unlimited GPRS internet plan within the United States, so if I got this my internet would be insanely fast?
It only works if u r in a 3G coverage area. But yes, I'm using mine as a modem whilst out of the office, and it's not far off being connected to adsl. In my country I pay US$0.15/Mb which means u can hit a Gig without feeling any pain what-so-ever.

actually thats not true, Cingular is rolling out HSDPA very soon, and that very close to ADSL speeds and you can also do voice and data at the same time, try that with verizon's EvDO, you cant because verison ev-DO stands for Evolution Data Only, s

Tmo USA just unrolled Edge in many places, and will be expanding, and is shooting to have 3g in 4th quater 2007. Stop whining, USA is about 3 years or so behind the rest of the world in a lot of technology: cell phones being one of them. We can iether suck it up, or move to Europe......

EDGE won;t work on the JJ, nor will HSDPA I'm afraid.
HSDPA is sometimes called 4G - it's potentially magnitudes faster that 3G - easily 3Gig transfer rates - depending on MNO's allowed bandwidth.

I was under the impression that after AT&T merged with Cingular they then started rolling out UMTS this year. I think you can get 3G in limited places. Phone them and ask.

I've red it just now. That's why I was asking, now I know that new Nokias are both EDGE and UMTS(WCDMA) enabled.

O2 are piloting high speed 3G with the potential of 2MB download speeds soon and upto 20MB in the future. I know O2 have been slow to roll-out 3G but I have found the performance on their network better than on Vodafone and T-mobile.

They're diluting the message with i-mode.
I like 3G, even though I only get 180-220Kbps on their network in Belfast, on a theoretical limit of 384K.
And that's after fighting them via phone and email to get the 128K limit lifted on my XDA, a limit imposed purely because I wasn't on a business tariff. Fcuking idiots wasted about an hour of my life until they relented.
Definitely not as forward looking as I'd like. And I work for them.

WOW, thats compared to my E connection in Chicago that tested at 150K and WIFI at 1100K.
Ouch, I might shed a tear. I'm definitally jelous of 3g in US. Stuck on roughly 230kbps on E with tmobile. Though paying $10 for unlimited data and 200 msgs is nice compared to the move to At&t. Im =( nonetheless, but congrats to you
BTW, anyone know if its a change in hardware or software (like in diamond) that adds the frequency?

Took 4 days, should have been 3 but customs held it up--needed a form filled out that I was using it for "testing" (I guess because its not FCC approved). Seller was great.
So far so good, flashed it and testing out some new roms.
3G works fine.
Getting used to the big screen and few buttons(had a polaris).

I just recently got an Xperia X1a, but the HTC Touch HD was definitely my first choice. But the 3G thing was a deal-breaker for me since I really wanted something that was speedy on the browsing.
I absolutely love my X1 but this is making me wonder if I should return it....

It might make a difference if everybody will get 3G in the United States. I wish there was some kind of map / key that would identify where the 850 / 1900 3G signals were at in North America. Congrats on having 3G with the HD in the United States. I am quite jealous I must say.

Using Dutty 1.9 rom and pocket player, perfect sound with a 64 bitpool even with internet usage. Kept the stock radio.

Really? That doesn't surprise you? All the threads I've read in the past were talking about how disappointing it was to not get 3G in the U.S. with the HD. And how it was most likely a hardware issue (although that is still up for debate). Most people were even skeptical about the Aussie version.
I think if you were to hit up an AT&T wireless store, they could show you which areas have the 3G signals, they did for me. Although I'm not sure if they'd be able to specify if it's an 850 signal area.

Exactly. I know where all the 3G areas are in the US they just won't be able to tell me on what frequency.
The Xperia works on the 1900mhz signal only and gets 3G in some areas. That's why I was not surprised.

Ahh, I see I see.
I got a big fat H with a box around it on my Xperia (HSDPA I think), which I was told by another poster is actually a lil faster than 3G.
So does that mean my area has only 1900mhz signal? Or not necessarily...

You've put the Telstra software on a T8282, and don't get 3G.

Telstra T8285 fro EBAY AU Unlocked?
I have been tempted to order it on Ebay as well. It will be my first purchase on Ebay.... From what I can see the Telstra T8285 is the one I want and It says it's unlocked. I plan to pop my AT&T SIM card in and expect it to work on the 850 3g band. Am I missing anything else?? I'm pretty sure the folks who have already bought one have got it from the same source in AU. If I get the nerve to do this I will be selling my T8282.

The HD2 is a class 12 EDGE capable of 560kbps...twice as fast as the EDGE speed on diamond/tp/hd/d2/tp2. I was just wondering if someone can test it to see if it gets even around the 400-500kbps range.

Mine will be arriving tomorrow, i am in the states so I will only have EDGE. I have never benchmarked mobile connectivity so if you will:
1. post a link to the app that does it
or
2. Post the site i can use

I can tell you how to do it on a TP2: maybe the same will work on an HD2? Go onto the Settings screen in TouchFLO/Sense. Hit "Communications", then "Phone" (not the switch, the bit to the left); scroll down to the bottom and hit "Band"; then, in the top section ("Network Type") choose "GSM" rather than "Auto" and hit the "Done" soft button.

Hi cyberfox, the Tilt2 (or TP2) has a class 10 EDGE capable of up to 236kbps. The HD2 has a class 12 EDGE of up to 560kbps. No need to do your EDGE test because the older qualcomm MSM7xxxx on your tilt2 and my diamond has a max of 236kbps...though real world it's around 100+kbps (i have very good EDGE reception and have done many tests and they range from 90-140kbps).
For that reason, I'm curious as how fast the HD2 EDGE really is, and if it can average above 400kbps...that would be night and day! Hopefully mallman or someone here in the States can verify
I'm insulted! To think I wouldn't know how to do it if the option was actually there in Comm Manager or in the Phone settings!
I guess the stock ATT Rom (I plan on selling this guy soon so I don't want to put a cooked rom in) removes that option. I remember my old Tilt loaded with EnergyROM had a "3G on/off" right in the HTC's communication screen, this one doesn't have it there or in the phone settings (there is no "Band", and you can't even pick the network you want, it just has a "Find Network" button which puts me in ATT's network automatically, no settings).
But anyhow, as lude219 noted the real thing we all (well, at least I) want to know is the EDGE on the HD2 and how it compares with 3G, as he said if the HD2 edge can really reach 500 and averages at 400 then well 400-500 vs 600 isn't that bad at all

i agree because i got 230 once and upper 190's to 220's other times. Sorry for the delay, had to find time to get to a place wher ei actually had good ervice lol. I really hope they release this on verizon so i can sell it and get one on verizon lol. I am so jealous of my wife's imagio connection stability.
Here is a screen shot I got while inside a building over 1mi (as the crow flies) from the tower and 3 bars displayed on ATT edge. I will have to try it with better signal soon..

I've done the whole diagnosis tweaking (release 6) and pretty much all of the other tweaks I've found in these very helpful threads.
But my download and upload speeds are atrocious. 80-150 kbs mostly. I ALWAYS have a 3g signal. I'm located in Boston and before this I had a Tilt2, which data speeds avg. 2000 - 3500 kbs.
Could it be my sim card? it is like 3-4 years old. Just a thought, because really i have no idea.
I am a novice when it comes to this type of tweaking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The specs indicate that the Focus is only capable of HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA), not HSPA+.

But your Focus should still be able to match the speed of your Tilt2 which is HSPA as well (but with HSUPA disabled). The real world experience really depends where you are and how many AT&T customers are on the same tower as you. I routinely get about 100kbps speed (download) on my various 3G smart phones as well here in nation's capital.
On the other hand, a lot of ppl who bought the new '4G' HSPA+ AT&T phones (Inspire 4G and Atrix 4G) are also rarely ever get HSPA+ speed at all. Those so called 4G phones also comes with HSUPA disabled.
So, in the end, it is the same crappy AT&T network that limits your connection speed, really doesn't matter what phone you have. I'll be happy if I can reach the full 3G speed (2 to 3 mbps down, 1mbps up) in next few years. And refuse to play the AT&T '4G' game.
You should get a new sim card considering it is 3-4 years old that will affect connectivity to 3g and hspa network..
Boston network shouldn't be a problem.

I had the same problem when I had an old SIM card in my att fuze when trying to connect to 3g and hspa speed networks...rule of thumb is buy a new SIM when switching to a new phone....it also depends on what network your on...are you at&t?

Yes, I am currently on Att network. Which I must say was really reliable and fast, up until the last few months...

Samsung Focus unlocked I get 3G+ in EU, if that helps. Seemed pretty fast, but I haven't done a speed test, though.
Usually I unlock my phone as soon as I get it home. With a bunch of unknowns with the Focus, I'm waiting it out right now before I do anything
So My phone is still locked 8)

I got 3G+ icoon with Rogers ROM, but not with AT&T ROM. And there's tool which can enable 3G+ icon, so I think it's just a registry issue.

I also get 3G+ with a Rogers sim card in my Focus, same card in the BB only 3G.
Is it possible to check whether this is just graphic, or there is a real difference in d/u speeds? I am using AT&T Focus in Europe.
You can check real speed with speediest.net to differentiate whether its gfx only or real network.

I'd love to hear what results you get if you test out the download/upload speeds. Like others have said you can use speedtest.net or there's a pretty good app called Bandwidth that I use.

You can basically change it into anything (3 chars max.). And I prefer "H", instead of "3G+".
