Telstra 850 version working in USA on 3G - Touch HD General

Hi
I stuck my neck out and purchased a Touch HD telstra version from a company in australia. It just came in today and it appears to be working well on the 3G band of ATT. I have the H in the signal bar and DSL report speed test 934 kbs. More to follow.
see this: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NPV2LJDG

This is awesome news...please keep us updated and also tell us where you got it from?
Thanks.

WOW, thats compared to my E connection in Chicago that tested at 150K and WIFI at 1100K.

Ouch, I might shed a tear. I'm definitally jelous of 3g in US. Stuck on roughly 230kbps on E with tmobile. Though paying $10 for unlimited data and 200 msgs is nice compared to the move to At&t. Im =( nonetheless, but congrats to you

BTW, anyone know if its a change in hardware or software (like in diamond) that adds the frequency?

Just done the same thing here. Great to hear that you are having success!! thanks for letting us know.
Have you put a new ROM on the thing yet Dutty or something else?
Is the telstra customisation as bad as we have been hearing?
Cheers,

Awesome, please let us know where you got it from. Also, if you don't mind, how much was it with shipping and how long did it take to get.

But yes guys, I really want to know in what store you found it.
Thanks !

Took 4 days, should have been 3 but customs held it up--needed a form filled out that I was using it for "testing" (I guess because its not FCC approved). Seller was great.
So far so good, flashed it and testing out some new roms.
3G works fine.
Getting used to the big screen and few buttons(had a polaris).

Damn, this is some amazing news if true....
I just recently got an Xperia X1a, but the HTC Touch HD was definitely my first choice. But the 3G thing was a deal-breaker for me since I really wanted something that was speedy on the browsing.
I absolutely love my X1 but this is making me wonder if I should return it....
MAN, I hope this is just a myth, lol!

How sweet it is
$826 plus shipping is a considerable amount. It doesn't surprise me that the OP is able to get 3G. I wonder where the user is located. It might make a difference if everybody will get 3G in the United States. I wish there was some kind of map / key that would identify where the 850 / 1900 3G signals were at in North America. Congrats on having 3G with the HD in the United States. I am quite jealous I must say.

I am in north Florida.
BTW saw some posts about bluetooth skips.
Using Dutty 1.9 rom and pocket player, perfect sound with a 64 bitpool even with internet usage. Kept the stock radio.

Really? That doesn't surprise you? All the threads I've read in the past were talking about how disappointing it was to not get 3G in the U.S. with the HD. And how it was most likely a hardware issue (although that is still up for debate). Most people were even skeptical about the Aussie version.
I think if you were to hit up an AT&T wireless store, they could show you which areas have the 3G signals, they did for me. Although I'm not sure if they'd be able to specify if it's an 850 signal area.

Exactly. I know where all the 3G areas are in the US they just won't be able to tell me on what frequency.
The Xperia works on the 1900mhz signal only and gets 3G in some areas. That's why I was not surprised.

Ahh, I see I see.
I got a big fat H with a box around it on my Xperia (HSDPA I think), which I was told by another poster is actually a lil faster than 3G.
So does that mean my area has only 1900mhz signal? Or not necessarily...
I'm really considering returning my Xperia now hahahah

Anyone can tell what make the different from the T8285 and T8282, both of them have the same hardware.....how can the T8285 support 3G, i use my T8282 to flash the telstra rom but still cant get the 3G even the model name have changed to T8285. I still dont believe that is the hardware issue

Yet you still don't think it's hardware!?

Telstra T8285 fro EBAY AU Unlocked?
I have been tempted to order it on Ebay as well. It will be my first purchase on Ebay.... From what I can see the Telstra T8285 is the one I want and It says it's unlocked. I plan to pop my AT&T SIM card in and expect it to work on the 850 3g band. Am I missing anything else?? I'm pretty sure the folks who have already bought one have got it from the same source in AU. If I get the nerve to do this I will be selling my T8282.
Thanks

Thanks for the throwing your 3G test up on YouTube man! Nice work...thorough test/results and should help answer people's speed question.
You still switching to AT&T bro? I ordered my phones/plan today and will cutover in 10 days, can't wait. Even without the 3G love right now, the X1i is definitely living up to the hype for me.

Hi,
Can you please let me know your ROM version for the X1?
Rom version and date. If you can give us all details for the ROM/RADIO/DATE - would be greatly appreciate it.
Somehow we cannot get 3G in Canada, however, it is proven fact - Rogers running 1900Mhz 3G..
Thanking you in advance.
I think most of the major markets have both 850 and 1900, but some of the smaller markets may only have 850 especially if AT&T bought out other companies' cellsite towers instead of building their own.
You may want to try going outdoors to try to pick up a 3G signal, since 1900 isn't as strong as 850 for indoor signals.
Also, BuddyLee's speed test video did show the H indicator for the full HSPA connection.

X1i vs X1a (need advice stat)

Ok, so the x1a got recalled and the x1i is being soled by addictedtophones.com. They currently have them in stock and have the black. Well I called them and the guy said that the x1i works with the 3g just as well as the x1a. If this is true than why would anyone want the x1a over the x1i due to the better video quality?
This website also comes with a 4gb memory card and a purchasable 1 or 2 year warranty. So, the question is, should I wait or purchase this phone, especially since I can get it now and with better stuff? What are the pros and cons?

Because if u are in an area with 850 and no 1900 u wouldnt get 3g. But for people like me in the city the X1i is a must without a doubt. Im on 1900 and get atleast 2 bars with HSDPA everywhere i go except into deep parts of buildings where I tend to use wifi or actual computers.

Ok, lets say half of the time I live in a big city (Birmingham, AL) where there is 3g (at 5bars) and the other half I live in a very rural area where it runs off of the edge network and you might get 3 bars and there is no chance possible of getting 3g. Will the phone still work and receive internet as well as my at&t tilt? This is the determining factor of which one I get... thanks for your response so far!
I found this: http://www.wireless.att.com/download/GPRS_coverage_leg.pdf which like I said half of the time I live in birmingham and the other half I live in a place in the middle of birmingham and atlanta. So would the x1i be good idea or a horrible idea. Sorry I don't exactly understand all of this.
And would sony cover the same warranty on the x1i as they would the x1a in the US?

It was only the x1a black that got recalled due to a crack in the screen i believe. Not 100% sure on that. But, seeing as you have the x1a silver, your's is perfectly fine to my knowledge.
Att 3g runs on either 850 or 1900 spectrum. First you have to identify which spectrum you have running in your area ... I am assuming that you got 850 but I may be wrong double check it) Ok so if you have 1900 spectrum with the 3g in the area then u get 3g with the X1i. If you have 850 spectrum with att 3g in your area you will only get edge speeds. If at home you only get edge, then ... actually im a bit tired its sunday evening ... ill simplify this so i wouldnt confuse myself
1. Birmingham, AL check the map to see if its the 1900 spectrum running if yes then u get 3g on the xperia.
2 Birmingham, AL only 850 spectrum you only get edge on xperia
3. Will the phone work and receive internet as your tilt ... yes only on edge depending on if you are using it at home. But if you are in the 3g area of Birmingham, AL and 1900 spectrum is running then u get 3g.
Mind you remember this ... att 3g runs on either 1900 or 850. The X1i only has 1900 so if you are in an area that has 1900, you are good to go. If you are in an area that only has 850 then u only get edge. But either way you will still get voice and internet no matter where you go and att has service there. 3g only comes into play where has the 1900 rollout. eg where i live in nyc we have both 1900 and 850, so maybe you have both in your area but check the map and see. I am too tired to do it.
Ok i was looking at the map, i see red in parts of alabama, red is good ... too tired to look for birmingham, but understand this, 3g for the x1i only runs on 1900 in the us. If you arent in that area you get edge speeds right across the board and everything else works normally.

You are awesome and I love you! Haha, no but seriously thank you so much! I believe that I might as well get the x1i from what I've heard.
Really there is only 2 questions left.
1. Will Sony honor the support/warranty as well as the x1a vs the x1i in the US?
2. Is there any difference in speeds with the x1a vs x1i on 3g if both of them are accessing the 1900?
Please do not feel obligated to answer these tonight. Go get some rest and thankyou so much for all of your help!

X1a vs X1i
I live in a "fringe" area outside of Atlanta. I had both phones and he X1a held 3G 95% of the time and the X1i was maybe 40%. I didn't take the phones into the city for better coverage testing as I work from home and needed the 3g where I am the most. If you are in a coverage area where 1900 is strong, jump on it ( x1i) Great phone, I am one of the few it seems like to have a perfernce of silver over black on this one......

Than why did Sony tell me the black was recalled and no one I've talked to have received the e-mail saying that the silver was? That's why Sony said yesterday that BestBuy still has not gotten it yet due to software issues. And your wrong about it being released in the united states, it was to the bestbuy shipping department, they just had never put it online until the release date of december 7th, until it was recalled and they had to ship it back. It was released in the United States but just not to the public. Or at least all of this is what I have been told.

Is there much diff btwn T8585 and T9193

I had the HD and now have the Nexus 1 but cannot resist coming back to my beloved Chefs and Winmo custimizations. I was wondering if anyone can give me insight on if its worth to pay the extra couple hundred dollars for the Telstra version with 3G and if it is a greatly noticeable difference of speed? I surf the web some and like to have 3G just to have it because I know its faster and better than edge but If theres no reason to shovel out the extra couple hundred dollars just to have a lil bit more speed I would go with the T8585. Hope someone can give me an idea if there would be a major difference between the 2 as I would be using it on ATT. Thanks
HTC HD2 T8585 vs. T9193
Thanks for posing the question regarding the differences in the two phones. I have a T9193 that I paid more to obtain due to its AT&T 3G capabilities. Unfortunately, I dont know the answer to that question but would be interested in knowing the opinion of others. The obvious answer is that 3G is faster than the edge technology. I flashed a different ROM to my device and it now displays under phone identity: Model No. HTC HD2 T8585. I am sure that this change in identity does not change the basic mechanics of the phone or its 3G capabilities (at least not that I have noticed). Anyone who has thoughts on this please advise. Thanks

The TMobile phone is not the T9193, there is only one difference between the T8585 & T9193 and that's the WCDMA/HSPA bands.
Be sure to check if your area has 850MHz coverage prior to making the purchase. I have the T9193 here in arizona, but all we have is 1900mhz 3G access here. Thankfully, the AT&T reps have gotten word that they will be rolling out 850mhz towers within the next 4 months, but still...it hasn't happened yet.
The 9193 sprinkles fairy dust and has the ability to call upon unicorns, clearly making it superior, in addition to its superior ATT and NextG capabilities.
Edge is a lot slower than HSPA.
Edge only
I live in Idaho, Small town too. We don't have 3g.I've had several nice phones, including htc hd, now hd2. I do all the things with edge, but I realize it's just slower, but I have no complaints. It seems pretty fast because of the processor. Don't know about you guys, but I like the tmo's hd2 keypad (the green and red call and power on/end call buttons) more than the eu version. I wonder why they did that one with a different backlight..

It's probably not a different backlight, it's probably just a different key cover that has a green/red translucent filter on it...

There's a map for that
http://www.cellularmaps.com/att_850_1900.shtml
Delicious 850mhz 3G/HDSPA in both Provo, Utah and North Brunswick, New Jersey
Any new towers will be 850mhz and supposedly they are working to convert some 1900 towers to 850. Not sure how true the last bit is, but the first bit is true.
As for my t9193, it is just as good as a t8585 just with ATT 3G. No difference mate, no worries on roms or SPL.
(Although, the current release of hardspl did not program the Telstra MID into the list, so it wont let you flash it yet, but it should work!)

Telstra HD2 and Telus

I currently have an old HTC Diamond and am ready for an upgrade.
Telus' new 3.5G network runs HSDPA / WCDMA 1900/850. It just so happens I'm going to be in Australia next month and I'm interested in the Telstra HD2.
So, from my understanding, I can flash a radio on the HD2 that will make it work with the Telus 1900/850 network? It has to be 850+1900, not just one or the other.

That thread implies it works out of the box. Are you sure Telus has that crap dual-band structure like TMoUS? If so, that guy wouldn't have been able to get HSDPA... but he clearly did Telstra HD2 is 850/2100 BTW.
i think it has to be 1900/850 for full coverage, something like some towers are 850 some are 1900 :/
Oh OK, it's not structured dual-band then, it just happens to be a coverage issue.
I would PM Spike15 and see what his 3G coverage is like. In the states, we are split 850/1900 as well, but I get full HSDPA coverage pretty much everywhere - and the jump to Edge (if necessary) is seamless.
The new belus network *only* has 3.5g. So if you don't get on WCDMA/HSDPA you dont get on anything.
Ah I see that now. Crazy canuck carriers
Yeah, I would definitely tread cautiously then. Like I said in my last post, get in touch with Spike15 or get your hands on an older Telstra Touch HD (or any other phone compatible with their Next G network) to see how it works.

Hahaha, damn, counter-owned. You've won this round! So your thoughts on the phone then?

Moto X (Carrier Unlocked Version)

Greetings All,
I purchased a carrier unlocked version of the Moto X from a retailer on ebay. Here's the item number:290976476988 (I would provide the link, but I am not allowed to since I'm a new user). It had a pretty significant markdown from what Motorola is selling them for, so I decided to take a shot in the dark hoping it will work with my carrier, T-mobile, which I'm pretty confident it will. I should be receiving mine at the top of next week, so I'll check back with my results once I get everything squared away.
In the mean time, can anybody confirm if there is one universal carrier unlocked version that will work with T-mobiles bands? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

It will but is missing the AWS 1700 HSPA frequency. If you go to or live in an area that is not refarmed you will be stuck on EDGE.

Well I think I may have lucked up, as I did a couple of quick searches and it looks like I'm in an area with 1900 MHz HSPA coverage. Does 1900 MHz constitute "refarmed" HSPA?

Yes but what I try telling people on here just like I did with the HTC One (and later if you look on those forums many people started getting rid of their developer edition for a tmobile one) is that just because your area is refarmed doesn't mean every inch of it is. I would had to drive to the mall and realize i'm only on EDGE after spending $500+ on a phone. If you area has LTE that will help though. Also if you ever travel anywhere you run into the chance of not having 3G.

No doubt, and I appreciate the concern as well as the explanation. I live about 10 minutes away from the Loop in Chicago, and I had my Nexus 4 working off of the LTE hack for quite some time until I upgraded to 4.3. I had LTE coverage about 90% of the time, but when I travel to see my Ma in the suburbs I remained on HSPA+ (not sure if its refarmed out that way).
We'll see how I do for the first week. If anything I'll just return this one and just get the T-mobile variant. Hopefully T-mobile continues to expand their LTE coverage in the surrounding areas around the prime metro areas. I've kinda accepted that I won't have mobile data in the boonies, but hopefully T-mobile fixes that soon as well.
