Need tips diagnosing my N1 problem. It took a nasty drop to marble floor, battery and door were thrown, but no body damage. After turning it on, there was no signal bars, trying to select carrier/automatically, it said SIM not allowed to register with carrier. Put the SIM in my Nokia, it worked. I put the SIM back in N1, it worked for a while, then lost all signal bars and had an X for no SIM card, but 3G works fine, just can't place calls. A reboot fixed that for about 30 minutes, then back to the same symptoms. 4th try is now working, it's been on for 1 hour 22 minutes with only 7% without signal (normal for my area).
Is there a way to pinpoint the source of the problem? SIM problem, N1 problem or carrier problem?

has anyone else had the problem of loosing reception for no reason...after a soft reset i have full reception...but that happend last nite and just now...the fones in standby mode :S
i've had a problem "losing" signal, but i think that's just because Cingular reception isn't the best where i work, but at home it's actually full bars all the time.
r u using wisbar advance? if u r, then its a known issue..they are workin on it to get it resolved..
im on tmobile usa. not only does my mda looses its signal but also when it does, it becomes a pain to get it back...it normally takes me a minute or two to get my reception back...
hmmmm mine seems fine now...i dont know why it was doing that :S :?
I've noticed that twice so far on mine...for no reason, it searches for signal in an area where i have never had problems with reception. Maybe Cingular was working on their network during those periods...who knows.
Today was the first time I lost signal since I got this phone (with the exception of a room that's been jammed) and the cause:
A couple of hours ago I had my phone on my desk inside one of my note books (yes my desk is messy ) and as I was lifting the note book, the phone slipped through and hit the floor and came to rest with the mini SD 1/2 way out.
Later my friend comes looking for me and said the phone doesn't ring. Turns out my SIM had become dislodged and was about 1/3 the way out  Put it back in properly and all is well.
Might want to check the sim.
I've had the same problem...at home I frequently have a full set of bars...the all of a sudden I have no bars...then its a pain to get it back; sometimes requiring a reset. It's a real pain. Anyone else have this problem and found a solution; I am running the test ROM
This kinda thing happens to me with my XDAIIi and its because i use a cheap (slow) SD card, it somehow interferes with the radio when inserted, so i have it popped out all the time.
It might be the same thing with the wizard, what kinda mini SD card do you all use?
Hi,
Okay so i'll admit firstly that I did drop the phone *oops*, but it landed on a carpet flooring.
Since then the phone will just drop the signal when in standby mode and then the screen appears asking for the pin code.
Even when trying to make a call there's just silence and then I hear a beep and again the signal drops and then enter the pin code screen appears.
I am using the sim card in my old Nokia 6310i and it works perfectly. I have tried hard resetting the phone and reflashing it, but that doesn't help.
Now comes the tricky part. I originally purchased the phone from Europe before it was launched in South Africa so obviously no warranty is covered and my insurance excess is only R250 ($36), so do I just claim from insurance instead of taking it to the local agents for HTC (Leaf)
Have a great week.
Ari
I've been experiencing a lot of radio issues lately. It'll work fine for a day or two, then show no signal and an 'x' in the data icon for a day or so, then suddenly start working. It's not affected by a reset.
i've flashed 4 different radios on it, and they all behave the same. i also have a Tilt and it maintains a connection while the 8525 does not.
could the antenna be loose inside? do you think the radio is going out?
Same problem here any progress? It do not have signal, then have signal...
same problem for me... please someone help us :-(
christmas is coming
Try flashing 1.48.00
Same problem here for about a month. Odd.
tighten sim card holder
I spent weeks reinstalling radios and roms and almost $100 trying to fix this problem. I finally tightened the sim card holder and it fixed all my "no GSM" and spotty coverage issues. The sim card is held in by two tin brackets. I bent them down a bit so the card was held in more secure and all my problems were gone! I really thought it was a software problem. It really still doesn't make sense because I had the problem with or without a sim card in it. But, who cares, now it works! God is good!
I saw this thread and its the same problem i was having, read through it and saw the post about bending the sim card holders down a bit and it actually worked, thanks for the idea
Hi I did the same thing. It worked for a while but started again. After opening the phone a hundred times, flashing a hundreds radios etc what i did and worked was clean the sim card with an eraser. Trust me, u will not get no gsn again and always give u a signal.
I have similar symptoms, although the major difference is that the device crashes and does a hard reset by itself.
Still, I'll try bending the SIM holders; there's nothing to loose at that stage...
Most of the time when I reboot my Vibrant, it is unable to find the network. Going into the settings and selecting Mobile networks results in an error message telling me to insert a SIM card.
Fixing the problem involves one of two methods, which I fear one day will fail indefinitely.
1) Rebooting multiple times until the phone sees the SIM card and registers on the network. This method failed more than ten times today until I gave up and tried method 2.
2) Turning on airplane mode. Then in an attempt to turn off airplane mode and get the phone to register on the network, it cannot be done. Airplane mode is greyed out in the popup menu that comes with a LP of the power button. Additionally, airplane mode is not indicated in the status area at the top of the screen. Next, reboot the phone. Upon reboot, airplane mode is indicated in the status area at the top of the screen with a small airplane. Switching off airplane mode is now possible from the popup menu that comes with a LP of the power button. The phone now immediately registers on the network. This method does not always work.
I've tried more than one SIM card to ensure that the problem isn't SIM specific. I have yet to try a SIM card from a different carrier to troubleshoot a carrier specific SIM problem.
Any knowledge on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks,
In an attempt to see if I could find a reliable way to get my phone back on network after a reboot, I made the dumb move of turning off my phone. I've now been rebooting my phone repeatedly for about 20 minutes trying to get it back to network.
In messing around with flight mode, I've now got the stupid airplane in the status area, and yet the damned phone says in the popup menu that flight mode is off.
I might be looking at a factory reset next.
Even a factory reset fails to get the phone to see a SIM.
Any ideas?
Unfortunately, it may be a hardware issue...You tried another tmo sim card?
Seems like a hardware issue to me too. No, I have only tried two different True Mobile SIMs here in Phuket.
The phone is pretty much cooked at this point unless somebody has some ideas. It won't register on network even after a factory reset. I've stuck it in a soft pouch and resumed the use of my 3yr old Nokia dumb-phone.
The next thing I face is trying to get a phone that isn't even sold in Thailand serviced at a local shop. Not fun.
Second alternative is to mail it back home for about $50, have it repaired, and then pay about $50 to have it shipped back. Then, when it arrives at the Thai post office, they will hold it for ransom until I pay taxes, duties, and tarriffs totaling another $50.
I'll probably end up just having a nice paper weight until I go back home in about a year.
Any other ideas would be great. Thanks a lot.
Unlock it and try a different carrier, the problem sounds like a hardware problem but it seems like you are out of luck and if you go back home in a year then the warranty probably won't be valid since warranty only lasts one year.
So yeah you can unlock and see if that works, if not at least you have a nice MP3 player
Thanks for your reply. It's already unlocked. That's the way I bought it on eBay in the US and brought it over here to Phuket and have been using it on the local True Mobile network.
Not getting the phone serviced in warranty is unfortunate, but it isn't really a problem. If I have to pay a couple hundred bucks to get the phone fixed by either sending it home now or getting it fixed when I'm back in town in a year, so be it. I'm used to these kinds of predicaments with the kind of traveling I do.
Any other ideas guys?
Flash an update file via Odin, a factory reset won't fix everything.
I think I've got it figured out. And it sucks.
The solution I have found that will consistently get the phone back on network is to power it off and let it completely cool down by either letting it sit for a long time, or by putting it in the fridge for about ten minutes.
So yes, it appears to be a hardware problem. And I'll likely end up having to spend a few hundred dollars out of warranty to get the mobo replaced. Because as I'm sure many of you have experienced with electronics, the way that manufacturers design these things, anytime something goes wrong that's as minor as a worn out headphone jack or some other prong on some component of the guts, the whole mobo has to be replaced, which in the case of a phone, is basically the whole phone.
Please excuse my irritation. This just sucks.
I'll be carrying a spare dumb-phone in my car for trips around Thailand that could end up getting me into some minor trouble if my car breaks down and I have no way to call for help. Yeesh...
When it happened to me I powered down , pulled the battery , removed and reinserted the sim .
Maybe run an under-voltage ROM, that could help but again that is just another random idea, I mean you don't lose anything.
Thanks for all the replies.
After upgrading to JI6 this evening, I have rebooted the phone at least 6 times without waiting for it to cool down. The phone has registered on network without failure every time.
I'll report back if it fails to register on network ever again.
My problem happened when I got a new sim . It's been working fine for a month now .
Hello,
I received my S7 Edge - happy at first until I made a call. A few seconds after I put the ear to the phone, call drops and "out of service area" appears. Signal drops then a few seconds later it regains it. This happens with every call unless I set it on "2G only". If I use the phone on speaker, the call can survive about 30-40 seconds until is dropped.
Tried two different SIMs, same issue. Factory reset (from the Android OS) does not solve the problem. Also tried factory reset from the Power Up + Power + Home button combination. No luck, problem still persists.
Anybody else having this issue ? Any ideas ?
Nevertheless, I am waiting for a replacement phone right now.
Thanks !
Probably is due to your phone. No problem with mine. I think you have a new sim card from your operator as old sims cards may have such problems (f.e. a 7 year old sim)
Yeah sounds dodgy mine is great signal no drops all day
No problems with mine either. Perhaps your mobile operator?
exynos model here, I have 1-2 stapels more on reception than I had with the S6 in low reception areas..try a diffrent SIM card or return the phone since there is clearly something wrong with it(or the carrier)
Wow, this is strange, I just inserted a SD card into the phone and no dropped calls ! The calls are only dropped if used without SD card ! Anyone else using his Exynos without SD card and having this issue ? Can anyone try ? Thanks !
Edit: nope, calls also get interrupted with SD card inside
I have found that Samsung has always had poor cell reception and wifi reception on their smartphones. Just look at all the pictures with reviews online. Look at reception signal or wifi signal up on top
i have the same issue now but I think it's relted to the carrier. Vodafone has some severe problems in Germany right now.
Probably sim isnt properly in the tray
