Can someone please tell me what this in settings does: Today timeout - 4 hours
Thanks
Not 100%- sure but I though it was the time that you phone will automatically flip back to the home screen (if you didn't play with the phone in the mean time.)
This was already in wm6.1 withou that manila...so I think this is not this what you explained...

Corrent. Say you are on opera, you let the phone go to sleep, turn back on 5 minutes later, still on opera. let go to sleep, turn on after the timeout (say 1 hour) and you will get the homescreen instead of opera.
Whether it actually works or not is a different matter. Shame it cannot be set to 5 minutes, it would make it easier to test.
I remember people discussing this on the old-aximsite now mobilitysite about my old ipaq and WM 6.0.
It shouldn't matter much what you set it to in a smartphone, because it's basically "always on", but on a simple pocketpc it meant that the device turned itself on at every given time (for example every 4hrs, or 4hrs after the last time you turned it on) to open the today screen and "update" its content, for example in case you have plugins like "todayagenda" that needed to modify the next appointments according to the current time/day. It was a useless battery drain on a plain pocketpc.
My settings say that my today's timeout is set to 4 hours, but I can tell for sure that device doesn't update the weather which is set to auto-update every 3 hours...it updates when I manually turn screen on...

My MDA Compact works beautifully with a BT GPS and TomTom 3....... except I have to keep touching the screen to keep it lit
Is there a way to stop this happening - actually is this normal or is mine broke !!??
You need to ensure the back light is not set to switch off after a certain amount of inactivity (yes, although tomtom is 'on' your pocket pc will not agree and will turn the back light off to save battery).
The solution really is to ensure your pocket pc is getting power.......
It's normal. I use Mbipocket (ebook reader), and even having the text scrolling up the screen won't stop the backlight turning off.
Dang !
How do you read your ebooks - by pressing the screen every few minutes ?
Something this obvious and they haven't fixed it !!
A simple tick box in the options menu isn't asking too much ??
So I guess the only way around it is to go into the backlight options and set it too stay on for 1 hour before turning off ...... wait, the maximum is only 5 minutes ..... I love Microsoft
????
very simple, watch under backlight, there you can adjust your settings...
the best is to buy a chargecable..and plug it in..
you mda will now charge , and navigate at the same time...

have fun

By tapping the screen every few minutes. Which as most of my ebook reading in dduring a 30 minute train journey to and from work, isn't much of a problem. And I've just realised that unticking the "turn off backlight" box means that it doesn't get turned off.
use TomTom4, the screen doesn't go off with that version
also BT is automaticly activated when starting TT4 when it was disabled in the systemtray.
TT4 r0x0r
Sweet !
TomTom 5 will be released in May - hopefully it will have those features included

Strange, TomTom upgrades from TT3 to TT5 (in may) and skipped 4...
You are really sure you have a TT4 ???

Hi,
I wondered if there is a program I could use to switch off my device, or alternatively could switch off a program after a specified amount of time.
My vision: to use my Wizard (or Universal) to get me off to sleep, as I would a clock radio. When using my clock radio, I set the sleep timer to an hour or whatever and it switches itself off when my hour's dozing is done.
So far I have got some decent radio station URLs for both WMP and Real player, which mean I have the radio part through WiFi to my device by my bed all sorted, but I don't seem to be able to find anything that will switch off the device after a pre-specified length of time.
If any coder has a spare half hour I assume (???) this is a simple task to write, and I will buy you a pint or three in return.
Basic spec would be:
input sleep timer time
countdown to zero
switch off device
Mort Saver is sooo close to it, but can only take 2 digits in the time field and they are seconds not minutes, so 3600 seconds for my hour's listening isn't saved, and it counts down from 36
I also heard how PHM Pocket Plus grinds down WM5 to an unuseable point, so I spose that one's out of the picture as well.
I reckon a lot of people would either benefit from this type of program, or alternatively already have found something which I haven't.
Tell you what, if anyone can do it, I will donate to the forum 10Euro.
Cheers,
Jo
Hello! I'm new but I have a big problem. In the enening when I go to bed I often turn off my Experia so I'm not interrupted at night and I can save my baterry. But the problem is that alarm in the morning doesn't want to ring and doesn't want to turn Xperia on back. I found recently the page on the web where somenoe said that it needs to be doen some hidden tweaks so that the WM doesn't try to look how full the baterry is before it sturts up. I can't find that page on the web again so can someone help me with this settings?
Than you.
use flight mode.
x1 cant wake up when off
I don't think any Windows Mobile phone is capable of waking itself up when it's powered down.
you probably use just as much power turning the phone on as you would have used leaving it in stand by..... just sayin'
OK, so I have tried flight mode and it works but anyway does anyone know the hidden settings to change verifiing battery from wm before it turns on again?
Oh, and another problem on my Xperia. I noticed that when I don't use it the screen (backlight) aproximetely every once in 2 minutes turns on again (my power settings are: turn backlight off after 30 sec, standby mode after 1 minute). I think that why battery last only 3 days. Can anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks.

Change your configuration : Settings / system/ ilumination (check here the items you have enable or disable "enable ilumination".
Well basically, your device is off when you turn turn off the screen.
Not quite. You can always leave a lot of applications running with the screen off.
So what kind of setting to save as much as it can for battery or what kind of app du you recomend?
First, as someone already said, a WM device can not turn itself on when powered down.
To conserve battery... well just make sure no CPU intensive apps are running in the background, wifi, BT, data connection are off and use auto backlight setting.
Most smartphones don't turn themselves on for alarm (WM, UIQ Symbian, S60 Symbians), but i can't tell for all (iPhone does as i've heard, no idea about Android).
PDA is not Mobile Phone.
It has operation system etc.
To run PDA you need about 1 minute for loading all components of OS.
To run Mobile Phone Alarm needs no load components of OS, just display and sound.
In PDA sound can be played with help of driver and so on.
In Mobile Phone just tiny assembler program and clock-chip.
I know my alarm worked before with Touch-It rom. But since I flashed with WM6.5 and my alarm doesn't go off when the screen is off. There's no way around this?
I can't trust the alarm at all, it sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Same on stock rom and 6.5. G-alarm is much better though..
Are you talking about turning the phone off completely,or turning off to the standby stage ? If you use the standby stage, it works fine, and hardly uses any power in this mode.
Well it's been an eventful month
Lost old faithful (700wx), bought an 800w just returned it due to keyboard issues, got a treo pro this morning.
Got my pro activated this morning, which seems to be very nice.
But of course things were going too well... lol
I have an IM app that I keep running along with some email apps.
They maintain a connection and notify me about messages.
As soon as the screen turns off, the data cuts out and doesn't kick in again until I turn the phone back on.
I tried Wifi the same thing happens.
Does anyone know how to get around this?
________________________________
Another related topic. The programs in question normally run in the background. When I hit the "X" they should keep running in the background like they did on my other two treo's. On this guy when I hit that X on either app it completely exits.
Is this some kind of OS configuration I need to change?
Thanks,
Kenny
Well I figured out the "X"
Still can't get the data connection to stay on though
Well I found diamond tweak that always keeps the connection on so that'll work.
Can you share the reg change plz? I'd like to do the same while slinging wifi
There is a program called "advance configuration tool" that has a setting to keep wifi on while the screen turns off. Download it and give it a try, the setting is kind of hidden, once you install go to the bottom right softkey and seach for it there. I do not remember exactly where it is but you could google it and you will surely find it.
That works with Wifi connection, should works with dataconnection

^^ Awesome thanks for posting the individual reg changes!
I don't use Advance Config Tool because it messes with some of my reg changes I made so everytime I open/close ACT it changes some stuff and I have to go back and reset them in the reg...
I have the problem that the device does not check my email account. Do I understand it correctly, that no data sessions are active in sleep mode? No GPRS (or above)?!
What's that for a config? You buy a phone where you can set up your mail account to check every 10 minutes your email account but in 99% of the time the phone is in sleep mode and therefore does not check mails...?!
Please say that's not the reason for my problem...
Would these work to keep the GPS alive when I lock the keyboard. I want to turn on GPSTuner and toss the Treo Pro in my pocket. So far my choices are a) leave it unlocked and risk making an unintended call from the trail or b) locking the device using "keylock" and then the GPS shuts down so the GPS does not record my hike.
Is there a way to keep the GPS alive while Keylock is engaged?
The three registry changes did not keep the GPS active when Keyguard was engaged. Shucks. So again...
Is there any way to keep the GPS alive while Keylock is engaged? Thanks.

Is this a problem with all treo pro devices?! Also flexmail does not check mails regularly... The programm is also configured not to close while pushing X...
This is really a really big bug... This phone is almost not usable...
I noticed this article regardin setting up an email account:
http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/32429_en.html
Last sentence is:
IMPORTANT: The device power-off timer is reset each time you synchronize. If your sync interval is shorter than the power-off interval, your smartphone doesn't turn off.
If I do understand it correctly that means: power of = no email checking...
this works at any damn phone... such a "feature" is really inappropriate.

No. Let me give you an example. Let's say your phone is set to blank out in 5 minutes. You set your email sync time to 4 minutes. After 4 minutes, your phone polls for new mail. At the same time, the phone resets the power down timer for another 5 minutes. So, by the phone continually resetting the power off for one minute longer than the mail sync time, it never powers down. And, because of that, drains the battery quicker. They're not telling you this is a "feature". They're warning you that this setup is a battery drainer -- better to lose some automatic mail syncing than lose phone power before the end of the day.
Hello kraski,
I think you mistaken me a little.
Problem is in one sentence summarized: scheduled Mail receiving does not work with Palm Treo unless you make above written steps to prevent the phone from going to standby, (most) other WM phones receive mails while in standby...
-> Where is the point to make such a "feature"? In standby the phone also receives phone calls! And SMS... And such an internet phone has to check mails also in standby, w/o discussion or not?!
Hi,
I've searched for several hours now in these forums and on Google, with no success.
I need an app that leaves the device switched on, but powers off the screen.
In settings/power I can dim the screen, but there is no setting to dim it completely or just switch it off.
I've found screensavers that can show a blank screen, but the screen is still actually powered up, just showing a black image presumably.
I've found apps that can switch off the screen. But you have to manually click on them to switch off the screen.
Does anyone know of a screensaver that after a set interval will leave the device running, but power off the screen please?
Suspend is no good, the device must be up and running apps.
Thanks for your help.

What apps are you trying to "keep running"? The only thing that might be an issue when the screen goes into it's normal sleep mode is that audio will stop outputting, and wifi connections will suspend, but there's cabs available here to easily get around both of those (and keep them going even when the screen shuts off).
Well, it's actually to solve another long-running problem that has made me almost lose the will to live....
Alarms don't go off reliably on my TP2.
Sometimes, randomly, the alarm doesn't go off until I press the power button to wake it up. The the alarm instantly goes off. So, if I set an alarm for 6am, sometimes the phone wakes up and the alarm sounds, sometimes not. And if I switch the phone on manually sometime later, at 6:15 say, the 6am alarm sounds then.
It will work fine for a few days, then fail.
It happened on WM6.1 and still continues after upgrading to WM6.5.
I have spent countless hours googling and searching XDA-Dev. I have tried probably ten different alarm apps, with no luck. I have hard-reset various times. I have tried various recommended registry tweaks. I've tried checking the notification queue regularly for any errors. I've tried so many different suggestions, for example, never pressing the power button to turn the phone off, only ever let it hibernate automatically. Warm-resetting it each day. And the list goes on.
So, I'm experimenting with just leaving the phone on forever. But turning the screen off at night to save power / not shorten the life of the screen hardware.
Which leads me to the question about screensavers which actually power off the screen automatically after a set delay. Just like a normal screensaver on a PC.
It's hard to easily convey the frustration I have for the TP2. An excellent phone. But a phone which I can't trust to do the simplest thing: to wake me up in the morning?
It'll end up in the bin at some point very soon now.....
A suggestion
Hi,
In my opinion there must be an application, change or customisation that is leading you to those problems. My suggestion is, to perform a sync towards any computer or server to keep your contacts, then, hard reset and keep the phone with the factory defaults for a while. Then, test the phone's alarms and if all is okay, add one by one your applications and changes, testing the alarms in between. Please do that on the official ROM (whatever 6.5 or 6.1) but official one. You will flash if needed later on.
I know it will be a pain, but you will find the problem.
I am using a TP2 with stock WM6.5 ROM. I have not had yet any issue with the alarms. However, I remember to have had those kind of problems before with WM 5.0 and 6.1. There were always related to freeware applications, customisations, no official ROMs, registry hacks and restored backups done from older builds upon upgrade. The alarm bug in old WM version was also known, but I have not experienced it on newer versions.
There can be some issues with the notification database by times, but as said above, it is almost every time due to customisations.
I am not saying that we should keep our phones without applications, third party software, cooked ROMs, customisation etc. But the goal is to find out what is the reason, and believe me. It is the best if not only way.
If you post the list of applications and hacks that you have in your phone, I can try to see if there is any I could identify like guilty one, based on my own experience.
Complementary, I recommend you to install and use these two applications in attachment. They have worked for me on WM5, 6, 6.1 and 6.5 so far. They are freeware and therefore you can use them without problems.
Good luck!
Thanks for taking the time to reply. All very good advice. I'll have a go when I've got some free time again. In the meantime, has anyone come across a screensaver that actually powers off the screen please?
Thanks again.

do you turn your ringer to silent or vibrate when you go to bed? if so,
go to start/settings/clocks&alarms/more and make sure that the "sound alarms box" is checked. this will make sure that even if your phone ringers/alerts are off, your alarm will ring. also, if you charge your phone while you sleep, go to the backlight settings and uncheck the "turn screen off on ac power" box. if you cant sleep with the phone light on, set it to max dim on ac power and flip it over. i always had this issue when i had the tmobile wing.

S2U2 on this forum.
try g alarm.it worked perfect for me with tilt
I have similar Issues with my TP2;
I notice that it is more to do with HIBERNATING than screen off.
My TP2 has go to the point where allowing it to go to hibernation means Screen of Death.
Overnight I charge it and do not let the screen go off and it seems ok (so far).
Guess I will have to Hard reset and test my freeware.
Cheers

I had the exact same problem. When the phone goes to sleep, it is ASLEEP. I didn't use the alarm too much but the phone would never notify me when SMS arrived. I'd hit the power switch to check, and bam, three messages arrive at once, some from hours ago. Immensely frustrating, but the problem went away when I installed Energy rom.
