i've been looking for an similar app to show the amount of sms/minutes i've used in the current month. But so far no luck. I've seen many data usage ones but i have unlimited data usage so its not use to me.
Would be a very useful app!

+1 for Meebo, although it quits unexpectedly for me sometimes. Much better than Nimbuzz.
SipDroid seems good for VOIP
hopefully yours comes on schedule, mine sure didnt.

Yes of course. WiFi or GPRS connections will enable you to use any instant messaging program that doesn't use text as a way to "IM."

I don't know of any good IRC client as I do not use any but this one has very good reviews on every site I see it on (And magazine reviews) http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=5713
but will i get double charged as this concerned customer wrote:

If you use Agile Messener, or the new Windows Live Mobile, you WILL NOT be charged using text messages. the AOL program (and the protocol, in my opinion) is retarded in it's method of message delivery. The two programs I have mentioned above, send IMs using your data tariff ONLY, unless you are connected to a WiFi access point, in which case, IMs will be sent over that network, rather than the mobile one.
Hope this has re-assured you...
are there any free IM's for yahoo messager that will alert you when you get an instant message?
mmmmm Instant massages.
Did you try Fring?
I am using Palringo. It's free and does some nice things, can quickly capture and send a picture (url to it), send voice files.
It also supports Google Talk, Hotmail (i think?).
goto beejive.com and try jivetalk. its a little buggy alpha but still pretty good.
the best one is Agile. it does all the messaging services, it has been around a LONG time, no bugs, very trimmed down but supports video, voice, and it's free...here's a link: http://www.agilemobile.com/

i must have downloaded an already regg'ed CAB file then, cause ive used mine for over 2 months.
#10, thanks for the info on Slick. I've been using it for a few days and I like it.
Best of all, for me at least, it supports custom status messages and "Idle" time on Yahoo.
Thanks again, I didn't come across it when I was searching for IM clients.
Id use slick but it has problems with away messages and does not play nice with clients such as trillian or pidgin. People dont receive your messages at all. IM+ seems to be the best solution. I tried jivetalk it crashed too much. Palringo was okay but did not support tabbed ims . My only gripe with IM+ is the screen flashes as you hit enter during typing. Almost like flickering. Slick or the others didnt do that.
But IM+ feature wise is very good, and has a today plugin for listing new received ims.
IM+ .Parlingo. Both very good programs.

my one gripe with IM+ is that when the person you are talking to is using the "official" AIM client it will randomly lock up when they send you a messege
i love that i can do voice chat over agile. it rocks. glad i downloaded a free version on accident, lol. works like a charm.

I've been using slick 0.38. I can explain to you how to uninstall .42 and install .38(it involves a reg edit). PM me if you want, or someone reply here if there's enough interest and I'll write up a quick doc for it.
On a more serious note. I am using Fring. But memory consumption is a problem.
Does anybody out there know if there is a way for you to be offline, and shown in your buddies contact list but in away mode, and then when they send you a message maybe it pops up a message on their contact list saying that you are currently away but if they would like to page you that the program would call your phone with an sms message to jump online and log into your IM program?
Confused yet? Me too.

I have uninstalled Fring and am now using Palringo. Much happier. The memory footprint is way smaller. I like the threaded messages and the ability to send recorded voice messages and photos thru IM. I dont use Skype so Fring is just more program than I need.
hey everyone; i was wondering if there is an app where you don't have to have a plan with your carrier to text(sms).

Umm, that would be illegal. And impossible
The only way to do that is to have a data plan already (or WiFi) so you can access the internet. Then you could use something like Google Voice, and from your web browser, send a SMS message through Google's website.
So, the only option is through the internet, or by getting a real SMS plan from your service provider. Got it?
well Iphone have a program that does that, so its not really illegal if you ask me. but thanks for your answer.

Ughh, I'mm 99% sure they wouldn't since:
1. AT&T would NEVER allow that. They don't even allow Google Voice, so they're definitely not gonna allow free SMS.
2. Apple wouldn't allow that, since (1) they listen to AT&T about everything, and (2), it's a "competing feature that already exists". They don't allow web browsers, and they wouldn't allow different SMS systems. If it does something that's already in the iPhone, then they usually don't allow it.
3. Isn't a SMS and Data plan REQUIRED on the iPhone? Soo, there would be no purpose at all for developing that app there.
Sooo, maybe it exists in the "jailbroken" world, but I really can't see it existing in the App Store. It just doesn't make sense there (#3) and it's probably against their monopolistic rules (#1).
lol.
well anyway my friend he paid $5 for that program and he can sent text when he goes wifi.

Ahh, I bet that's how they got around it. Because they have Internet Calling programs too, but I think they all have to work over WiFi, since otherwise, AT&T would be throwing a big fit, lol.
But their app store is loosening up over time, since the FCC is sniffing down their tracks!
So, the only way to make it possible would be to use an online service that gives you free SMS, and then access that system from your phone. You could do that from a browser, or you could suggest the idea to the Development & Hacking forums, and a developer might actually build an app that would do that. Who knows. I think the best option would be interacting with Google Voice, since the platform already exists.
Check out OneDialer - http://www.onedialer.com/
It already does voice calling through Google Voice, and I think he is working on SMS through Google. I forget if he was gonna make it all work through data, but there's potential there!

Hello all.The Windows Live messenger is not staying connected. This seems like an issue that has been around for years. I had it when I had an HTC Wizard ages ago. It seems to be happening alot on both of my HD2 phones. Also, messages are not consistently transmitting. I get the "try again" error.
Questions:
1.) I have even updated Live messenger from the Market and same problem. Is there a fix/better free IM app? I need Live & AIM.
2.) The OZ multi-protocol IM app is preloaded on the T-Mobile US HD2. Does this app use text? I have a feeling it does. The problem is that I do not have unlimited text because I kept our G1 data plans.
Thank You all in advance. )

Thank You kilrah. I tried nimbuzz, beejive, and palringo. Nimbuz had weird code holes that caused crashing because of missing functions. Beejive is no-longer supported on WinMo and it regularly crashes. Palringo is working good so far(knock on wood). Messages seem to always arive in time. And it has the nice Push to Talk feature.
I think everything will be ok for now. Thank You all for the help!

Strange....I'm using that in Singapore, our networks don't allow IM via text, and it works just fine over data.
Of course, I have no idea what T-mobile does to make it different, I can only say that it works on data only for me.

Lucky for you
After testing Palringo a bit, it looks like the first message does not always make it to the phone. Also the audio and vibrate notification is not happening on the first few messages.
I am going back to Live Messenger. I called T-Mobile and hopefully there is something wrong with the network in my area causing Live Messenger to disconnect. If that doesn't fix it I am out of ideas.
After disabling Sense UI it seems to at least vibrate on incoming messages now. This will have to do for now. I will file a bug with palringo. I am just glad the messages send and arrive and the app always reconnects after loosing signal.
Finally "Viber" is released on android.. All my mates with iphones use it and its a really cool cross-platform app.
"Viber is an application for iPhone® and Android™ phones that lets you make free phone calls and send text messages to anyone who also has the application installed.
You can call or text any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free. Viber integrates seamlessly with your existing address book, has great sound quality and once activated, does not require a PIN, username or any additional "in application" purchase. All Viber features are 100% FREE!"

1.Do I have to be connected to the internet, via wifi or 3G?Does it consume my 3G data when connected via 3G?
2.How much Megabytes does a typical call cost approximately?
Nice. I ll try it today.

Hi m8, you do need a data connection and according to the folks at viber it uses approximately 240 KB per minute up and down, 14 MB per hour up and down. I'd assume that is under ideal conditions (dont know what they are tho). i've heard it works way better on wifi than 3g..

Hi m8, not sure of the exact differences but heres some general ones..
1. Viber’s interface is very easy to use – it looks completely similar to the iPhone basic application, and this makes a huge difference for most users in the world. Simple elegance is what works.
2. Viber does not require login/password in order to log in, unlike the great majority of VoIP applications today, but instead it uses the user’s original cellular phone number. This makes the registration process very quick, and helps users find other friends who have Viber very easily. This way more and more friends recommend each other to install Viber, and have free calls.
3. Finally, Viber doesn’t have to be open when receiving a call, thanks to Viber’s support of Push Notifications feature. This means that Viber saves battery, and that users are always available to receive Viber’s free calls.
not working on my sg3
Not sure why but SMS works, I can hear but no one can hear me. Have used wifi. Now even linphone does not work (even echo calibration fails).
Am on JP4 with g3mod 1.3.2 performance. Am not able to find the issue here. Phone works but any voip app does not.
Is there anything I am missing here. Voice search works but voice dial does not hear me either.
UART and USB are both set to PDA (not sure if that had anything to do here) and dev mode is ON.
Hmm I'll try this with some friends

You should post this comment under the comments section of the viber app on the android market because the OP is not the developer for viber.
From what I've seen of this app, it works pretty well, but I'd recommend What's App. I wonder if they both connect to the IOS version of this, not many of my friends have Android phones
