Umm, that would be illegal. And impossible
The only way to do that is to have a data plan already (or WiFi) so you can access the internet. Then you could use something like Google Voice, and from your web browser, send a SMS message through Google's website.
So, the only option is through the internet, or by getting a real SMS plan from your service provider. Got it?
well Iphone have a program that does that, so its not really illegal if you ask me. but thanks for your answer.

Ughh, I'mm 99% sure they wouldn't since:
1. AT&T would NEVER allow that. They don't even allow Google Voice, so they're definitely not gonna allow free SMS.
2. Apple wouldn't allow that, since (1) they listen to AT&T about everything, and (2), it's a "competing feature that already exists". They don't allow web browsers, and they wouldn't allow different SMS systems. If it does something that's already in the iPhone, then they usually don't allow it.
3. Isn't a SMS and Data plan REQUIRED on the iPhone? Soo, there would be no purpose at all for developing that app there.
Sooo, maybe it exists in the "jailbroken" world, but I really can't see it existing in the App Store. It just doesn't make sense there (#3) and it's probably against their monopolistic rules (#1).
lol.
well anyway my friend he paid $5 for that program and he can sent text when he goes wifi.

Ahh, I bet that's how they got around it. Because they have Internet Calling programs too, but I think they all have to work over WiFi, since otherwise, AT&T would be throwing a big fit, lol.
But their app store is loosening up over time, since the FCC is sniffing down their tracks!
So, the only way to make it possible would be to use an online service that gives you free SMS, and then access that system from your phone. You could do that from a browser, or you could suggest the idea to the Development & Hacking forums, and a developer might actually build an app that would do that. Who knows. I think the best option would be interacting with Google Voice, since the platform already exists.
Check out OneDialer - http://www.onedialer.com/
It already does voice calling through Google Voice, and I think he is working on SMS through Google. I forget if he was gonna make it all work through data, but there's potential there!

mms is not yet available on sprint. in the future, you can use the search button located on the top right of this page.
there is, but since you're lazy about it maybe you should try kngtut79's advice and try searching.
you can use dashwire. I am on Bell CDMA in Canada and it allows you to send a sms to your contacts as a link to the picture which is the closest I have come to so far. Hope that helps www.dashwire.com

Verizon MMS requires data usage to send or recieve pictures and video. I am specifically looking for a program to send and recieve MMS messages without using data. The program linked above, called sMMS, does it without using data.

This will not work for you then, it still uses data, and you need the Sprint Picture Messaging, which is of course not available for VZW users.
Verizon charges you for a MMS like it's a SMS. If not it's $0.20/msg, the package for, I believe, 250 SMS is $5/mo.

I`ve been trying for a couple weeks now to get MMS working on my Touch. I got a thread going but no luck in fixing it. I came across this today though http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35616. I called Alltel after I changed the setting, but the MMS network happened to be down at the time, so I don`t know if the setting work since nobody could send any at the time. The representative talked to the advance service tech and googled it as well, but neither could figure it out. I`m gonna call back tonight ( they said the network should be up by then) on a different phone to see if they can diagnose it. It kinda sounds like a problem with flashing roms. I know it worked for me before I started flashing, but it also happens even when you flash to an official alltel rom with a locked phone as in the case with my brother`s touch. When I upgraded his radio his stopped working. Perhaps its a network problem, hell I read that Sprint took it away from there users.

Doesn't Work yet.
I just tried calling T-Mo and asked to enable Visual Voicemail and they said it is not available. Rumors say might be able to convince them to enable it if you say that you have an android phone and would like the android data plan but I don't know what the implications of that are. Personally until people start reporting an efficient way to get it working or T-Mo officially releases it I'm going to stick with Phone Fusion for now.

All depends on what current data/messaging plan you have...
I had the $35 unlimited data/messaging 'Smartphone' plan, switched to the MyTouch Unlimited Data/Messaging plan for the same amount and was able to activate VVM no problem.
Love it.
I started seeing that as a trend over in the other thread so I have updated my phone on the tmobile site to a MyTouch and changed to the android data plan. T-Mobile Visual Voice Mail works great. Absolutely better then Phone Fusion.

Ok,try changing your phone to my touch 3g and it surely will work.
I called in last night and had it activated on my phone. The employee had to have their supervisor put it on because according to their system TP2 does not support it and therefore I must have been using a 3rd party app which is unsupported, but working anyway!
T-mo VISUAL voicemail synchronization
Does the t-mo VISUAL voicemail automatically synchronizes and updates its list with a new VM or does one have to do it manually each time a new msg is received?
I have the 5.99 t-zones data plan. If change my phone to the my touch 3g, it is going to require a different data plan. Will my account get flagged in a negative way?
This would be a fun feature to have, but I am willing to not use it if it's going to require me to upgrade from t-zones.
Any help or feedback is appreciated!

So I'm talking with the reps and they are saying if they switch to MyTouch and Adriod plan that Internet on the Tpro wont work possibly, I assume that is BS and they are only saying that for support reasons yes?
I'm wondering if there's any apps for HD2 that works like "mobile defense" for android that can track the cellphone via a computer and activate the stolen device's GPS to track it.

F-Secure sms to finland?
I've had F-secure anti-theft in my phone for a while now. The txt location service works great, and last month I tried changing the sim, and guess what, got a sms on my backup phone with the new sim's phone number, which is exactly what it is supposed to do.
However, i checked my itemized bill today, and see the program sent an sms to Finland immediately after texting me. The number was 358400112368 . Googled this number and only got two vague references to f-secure on a nokia. Why in the world would they need to txt their mothership about my sim? Anyone else using f-secure anti-theft? Please check your bill and let us know if it sent a txt to finland.
As far as using other similar programs:
Mylookout : never worked for me, website says searching, and times out.
remotetracker : Stay away from this program!! its txt request uses no password, so anyone who knows you have the program installed can secretly monitor you via sms. An intentional oversight from the developer perhaps? And pretty malicious at that too! Edit: got it, see post below.
ms myphone : free version can only check the daily sync log. I cannot initiate a location search unless i pay, or am I doing it wrong?
so, anyone with f-secure got the txt to 358400112368? I guess this post will be the only 3rd google search result for this number?

my bad. thanks Samsamuel for the correction. i re-read the first whole page of that remoteTracker thread and the word "password" was never mentioned in his post or instructions.
as far as my original question regarding F-secure, anybody else see the outgoing text to finland when they change SIMs?
no worries.
i for one can't rate remotetracker highly enough. i cook my own rom, so its cooked in complete with settings, so its completely hard reset safe. only way to stop it working is by flashing.
that random text you mention sounds a little iffy, you tried emailing them? see what they have to say?
another vote for remotetracker.
It found my phone when left in a taxi
the F-Secure thing looks nice, i think im gonna try it this evening
lets see if it really sends a sms to finnland xD
I came across this thread, and just downloaded (didn't install yet) the f-secure app.
A couple things I don't understand.
I believe I have read posts here about needing a "backup mobile number", for the company to send SMS to, if something suspicious is happening with the phone.
But what if one only has one mobile number, no backup? Is the app then useless? (Couldn't there be an e-mail, or a call to the landline?)
Also, I see that besides giving this app away, F-Secure sells "mobile secuirty". (I guess that means anti-virus and such. Is that really necessary? I have never used an AV on my phone before, and never had a problem with that AFAIK.)
With the post about the SMS to Finland (probably company headquarters), it occurs to me, they may give away this anti-theft app, in order to get your phone #, and send you text messages advertising their AV app? I wouldn't want to get spammed with text messages. Has that happened to anyone using this?
remotetracker can send email
i've changed sim few time. fsecure only send sms to the assigned number (i know, i've itemized billing, and i can send sms internationally).
anyway, since it can never reply with correct location, and i've already figured out how to use remotetracker, i'm ditching it too. plus, fsecure will always pop up with it stupid checking for update while i'm using my phone. can't it check quietly?

see my previous post. it always say location not available.
I just tried lookout. I like it more than remotetracker because it's easier to use (the online "dashboard" makes it easy). The thing I hated the most about remotetracker (and other apps dealing with coded SMS) is that I would have to use an authorized phone and the proper codes to do whatever I need to do. At least with lookout, I can just go online and kill all my data and locate my phone.
I tested the "locate" feature. It found my phone in 2 minutes, but it was a little over one mile away from my phone!
The "scream" feature: It's a loud firetruck-type siren...it was a little bad because San Bruno, CA (one city away from me) had a horrible fireball accident a couple of days ago.
I guess it does its job. The locate feature is decent, but to think that it was off by 1-mile, it could make a difference in a big city.
Are there any apps for the HD2 where you can text over wifi?
I think your best option would be to download AIM for Windows Mobile (it's in the marketplace and it's free) or a IM client that supports AIM. Then go to aim.com to create an account, launch the AIM or IM client program, sign in, add your friend's/family's number (including area code), and talk away! Be sure to tell them who you are since the text message that they will be receive will show your screen name (unless you use your name as your screen name). Hope this helps

AIM let's you send SMS over wifi for free. When the other person receives the text, it will just say "Sent from AIM (Screen name)". Although one problem that comes to mind would be teh fact that the other person won't be able to send him a SMS unless he is logged in? Or it might show up later when he signs in. But it would definitely not notify him automatically that he has an incoming message unless he is logged in.

Yeah, I was just googling my question, and I came up with a website that told me to set a mail2web account and use microsoft's direct push to send SMS through wifi.
I feel your pain, I assume you want SMS via Wi-Fi due to no coverage where you are.
unfortunately its not possible in the traditional sense as SMS are transmitted via the network, not the internet. So for an SMS to be delivered (and sent) you need to be connected to your carriers network.
If the HD2 were UMA compliant we wouldn't have any issues, since its not the chances this will ever work are slim/none. Sorry
Use palringo for mobile, it's great!

With my provider (T-Mobile USA), I can send SMS from the web. I have to log into My.T-Mobile.com (faq here) which I can do with my phone from any wifi access point. So it's basically accessing the internet on the phone via wifi to send a SMS. On the phone I can make a link to this page which means one click to send a SMS from the web. I can also access this same feature from any computer.
Check with your cell provider and see if they offer something similar.

[email protected] or w/e, then you can have pictures sent there, and you can use the gmail widget basically as a text app, since you're e-mailing you're texts back you should be able to send mms right through the e-mail, then you really don't have to worry about having a voice app, and got a cool widget for your texts.
I might do that now that i think about it.
I am mad about the lack of Xoom support also, but where theirs a will, there is a way.
raddude, smart move but i dont think i have the stomach for another email addy. im so in tune with texting via computer off my google voice and how smooth it is from there to my nexus. i want to say i believe in google and see some how..some way..a jump over verizon's limitations on this but i dont know
Your world sure comes crashing down around you a lot. You should get some medication.

hahahahah i know i love going all bi polar when something doesnt go my way, helps gain views/responses...would be wierd if i was like google voice/whatever
haha
Ok, so I'm a little confused by this post. Is there some indication out that there there will NEVER be a google voice app for tablets/xoom? If so, where is the documentation supporting this?
I assume (and maybe incorrectly) that a google voice app on the xoom is just a matter of time (like flash and enabling the SD slot), not any direct statement made by google.
Does anyone have any concrete information of either scenario?

I don't believe so. I think people are just "OMG PANIC!" because not everything is exactly how they want it on a release day.
Patience truly is a virtue.
Just to add idle speculation into the fire, i am almost positive that we will get the iPad treatment vis a vis Google Voice. Meaning they need to get a version of the app going for android that does not integrate with a dialer.
I would love to have a voip option or something, but VZ and all US Carriers do not want us to use our devices as phones, they want us to have 2 lines with them! Galaxy Tab, which in the rest of the world is effectively a giant Galaxy S with dialer, etc, on all US carriers has had its calling disabled (of course since its froyo it was easy for at least the tmo ones to get the feature back).
This is not a Google issue, but rather one of the carriers not wanting us to not pay them for our minutes.
I think some folks might also be getting confused with the following Verizon statements quoting Verizon as saying the receiving or sending of SMS or MMS won't be supported by Verizon on this device.
I just interpret that as meaning that Verizon will not let the device natively receive and send SMS/MMS like a regular cell phone or provide phone apps to do this. Because GV does SMS/MMS via data and not through the normal SMS/MMS mechanism I would assume that Verizon's statement doesn't exclude the potential for GV on the device at all...
